Message from the Chamber...
Dear Readers-Well, it is finally Spring; one of my favorite times of the year here because we all get to get out of the house and see our friends and neighbors again! If any of you wish to get a Guilderland town map or Chamber directory of member businesses, stop by our new office at 2050 Western Ave (Star Plaza) and say hello. We are here with information for the community as well as for businesses.
While you are out, look around at some of the businesses that opened up over the winter or recently; there has been quite a lot of activity in our area! Tesoro’s Italian Restaurant is now where Nicole’s used to be in the 20 Mall, Hint of Paris Salon took over Carolyn’s here in Star Plaza, Little Caesars has $5.00 pizzas at Cosimos Plaza, CM Fox’s New Design Center officially opened up on Western ave by the Golf Course, Our Lady of Grace Gift Shop moved to Carmen Rd, Sauté’s To Go is in Carpenter Village Plaza……and more!! Within the chamber, spring has sprung with a push to educate all small business owners, independent contractors, and sole proprietors that we offer low cost health insurance to them, as well as other benefits that far outweigh the cost of the annual dues! Spread the word!! We are having a member sign up special thru May 31; with a discount of two months off membership. This is keeping us busy, busy, busyWe are also gearing up for a fun filled spring and summer of big events: May 6-Spring Social and Silent Auction to benefit the Girl Scouts of Northeastern NY June 11-The Chamber Annual Dinner and Business Award ceremony July-Everyone’s favorite-“Restaurant Week!” August 10-Annual Golf Outing at Pinehaven Country Club
For more information on any of these events or what we do, go to our website-www.guilderlandchamber.com or call us at 456-6611. You are all part of this community and are welcome to any event the chamber has! You might just see your neighbor there too!! Happy Spring! NEW Over 50 Softball League! "Softball is in the blood. We play for the love of the game" That's the premise for the Capital District Over 50 Softball League, which will start its first season May 30th. Formed by nine local residents, CDOFSL is a notfor-profit 501(c)(7) organization composed of players (male or female) fifty years and older. "Many of us have played for years and want to continue in an organized league and we have some players signed up who haven't played in several years, so we're a very diverse group", says Mike Connelly, President of the new League. We expect to play this year at a Guilderland location, on Saturday morning and one weekday evening game. We hope to have enough players for four teams. We tried to get a league going last year, but not enough players signed up, so we took those that did and played credibly in a local league against the younger set. That group is now the core of our membership. The objective is to have a fun atmosphere, with a little competition. For the more competitive among the group, we'll try to organize a team to play against others in the area. It will be a modified pitch league, with no fast pitching or high arc allowed. Registration is taking place now. See our ad in the April issue and use it for an Early Bird discount. We are looking for players from the surrounding area (Albany, Colonie, Bethlehem, Slingerlands, Altamont) and our charter does allow a limited number of players under 50, so if you love the game, sign up. The league is also looking for team and league sponsors, so let us know if your business is interested. For more information, contact Mike Connelly at 518-356-3745 or over50softball@ verizon.net for a registration form.

Q. What makes your preschool unique? A. The Altamont Cooperative Preschooll provides the perfect learning environmentt where parent, teacher and child workk together. This ensures that a child’s first exposure to education and socialization is a positive one. At the preschool, we focus on the academic and social process for the individual child as compared to the final product. Children are treated as individuals. They are taught in an environment that focuses on literature, art, music, math, science and social awareness.

This year, the four year old class was able to take a field trip to the local food w bank. Children were able to make their own b personal contribution with the donation of a p ccanned item. In addition, the children were aable to learn about the service that the food b bank offers to llocal families. A ffavorite field trip iis our annual vvisit to VanEtten’s TTree Farm. On tthis field trip, the cchildren are able tto choose and cut down a Christmas d ttree for their classroom. The field trip concludes with a bon fire in which hot dogs, marshmallows and hot chocolate h aare shared by all.
Q. What changes/options will you implement for the 2009-2010 school year? A. For the 2009-2010 school year, the preschool will restructure our program to better meet the needs of working families. The first change will involve lengthening the three year old program to 2.5 hours as compared to the 2 hours that it is currently. In addition, we will offer some families the option of joining the preschool without the responsibility of helping in the classroom. We realize that sometimes families are not able to help in the classroom for a variety of reasons. Offering this option, will allow all families an equal opportunity to participate in the Altamont Cooperative Preschool.
Q. What hours are you open? A. The preschool provides programs for both three and four year olds. The three year olds currently meet on Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 until 11:00 and four year olds meet on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9:00 until 11:30. Interested families are encouraged to stop in during class hours for a first hand view of our program. In addition, families can feel free to call 895-8522 Q. “Lincoln In Song, A special concert event “Abraham Lincoln in Song is the title and spirit of an extraordinary concert to be held at the Library on Sunday, April 26, at 2 pm. The songs and tunes that our 16th President heard, inspired and enjoyed will be performed by the 77th New York Balladeers. As president, Mr. Lincoln had musicians perform regularly at the Executive Mansion. He was well versed in the old patriotic tunes and the new songs of the Civil War. The songs to be performed at this extraordinary concert include: We Are Coming Father Abr’am, Lincoln & Liberty, Battle Hymn of the Republic, When Johnny Comes arching Home, Marching Through Georgia, Battle Cry of Freedom, Down By The Riverside, Nearer My God To Thee, and Auld Lang Syne. If in the proper mood, the Balladeers may play one of Mr. Lincoln’s favorite tunes, Dixie. The program will feature slide images and the stories behind the songs. Audience members will be encouraged to join in.
What’s it Worth? Consider, for a moment, how many times over the past few months you’ve visited the Guilderland Public Library. During one of those months, how many books, DVDs, CDs, or audiobooks have you borrowed? How many times have you browsed a magazine, attended one of our free concerts, or bright a child to enjoy Storytime? And how many times have you or someone in your family used our online research or genealogical databases?

OUR TOWNE GUILDERLAND communicated, and that the site does what it is supposed to do. That may be to sell a product, deliver a message, get customers to visit a store, join an organization, or to do whatever has been determined during the development process. • What is your latest Web Design? A few days ago we launched www.ultrabod.com, a Web site for Linda King, a person fitness trainer. This is actually a fairly small Web site. But size is not important as long as visitors decide to contact Linda and setup an appointment. In fact, this is the third site I have constructed for Linda. • Does this mean you have repeat clients? Definitely! Magic Touch Entertainment will be celebrating their 10th anniversary with me in a couple of months. I have built sites for three of their domain names, and each one of those has gone through several complete renovations. A few months after that we will be celebrating 10 years with Carol Anne Dunn Realty as clients. Right now I am working on the updates of other two clients, but you will have to wait for the launches to discover who they belong to. We like surprises. • Do you have a favorite Web site? I am afraid that I like them all. Each poses a unique challenge, and I particularly enjoy working on them. • Has the recent economic situation affected the Web business? Right now people realize that the World Wide Web is an excellent medium for communicating a message. The reach is nearly unlimited, and is extremely cost effective as a marketing tool. Some of my clients, such as The Vermont Inn, use it to reach out world-wide for additional business.

The Guilderland Public Library Wants Your Yearbook! Guilderland, NY, – The Guilderland Public Library needs your help organizing a class reunion – yours! Our current collection of school yearbooks provides snapshots in time, allowing you to reconnect with your youth any time you like – kind of like having a class reunion of the mind. But the true worth of this yearbook library is as a primary source of local history and genealogical data. Sure, these yearbooks are full of fun bits such as pictures of your great aunt playing JV field hockey, or the fact that you went on your senior class trip to Colonial Williamsburg. But one of the key values is providing portraits linked to names. Imagine the value a century or more from now of portraits and other primary data available from today’s yearbooks. The problem is, though, that our collection is incomplete. That’s why we need your help. With your donation of old school yearbooks, we can improve our local history collection so that future generations will have access to this information. Our goal is to encompass yearbooks from every school throughout the region. We want your school yearbooks, your parents’ school yearbooks – the older the yearbook, the better.

Right now you can view yearbooks dating back to 1949 in our Local History Collection in the library’s Guilderland Room. We hope to make this collection available online. Through a digitization partnership with Ancestry.com – one of many genealogy databases that the Guilderland Public Library gives library users access to – we’ll be able to scan our yearbook collection and add it to their online library of thousands of high school, junior high and elementary school yearbooks. This online collection spans the country, and has a combined total of over six million searchable names! In addition to yearbooks, this database allows library users to search census records dating back to 1790, military and immigration records, and many other types of historical material vital for tracing your family’s history. Please contact the Adult Services Department at (518) 456-2400 x 7 if you would like to donate your yearbooks. Yearbooks can also be dropped off at the library any time we are open. You are encouraged to e-mail your questions about this program to info@ guilpl.org.
