The Capital Region is a great place to live because of all the wonderful things it has to offer. As the New Year has settled in, tumultuous weather has as well, which can be a downside to living in this gorgeous area. Drive safe! Luckily, we have a lot of exciting things coming up at the GCC for you to look forward to! In 2009, we hope to deliver feelings of optimism to Guilderland residents and Chamber members to help better not only your business, but also your life. We are very much looking forward to our Verizon Business Expo and vendor fair on January 22 at AVILA. This will give people a chance to network and businesses a chance to gain exposure. It is an invaluable event to participate in given the current economic situation. These times also encourage us to think of others that are in more need than we are. The GCC is proud to host its annual blood drive on January 28 from 1-6 pm at the Guilderland Public Library. Not only can you save lives by participating, but you will also receive a free bag of Dunkin Donuts coffee to help keep you warm this winter. February brings small business group meetings and women in business group meetings, as well as other entertaining Chamber events. Sportime Schenectady will host a networking event on Feb 11 at 5:30 with instruction, demos, prizes and tours! To get involved or learn more, check out our website or give us a call. We can’t wait to hear from you and see you at all of our exciting events. Stay warm! Regards, Kathy Burbank Executive Director

COMMUNITY RESOURCE’S EMPLOYEES TIP THEIR HATS TO COMMUNITY GARDENS (Troy) For the fifth consecutive year, employees of Community Resource Federal Credit Union have bowled in Capital District Community Gardens’ Garden Bowl. This year’s event was held on Saturday, January 24 at Uncle Sam’s Lanes in Troy. Employees contributed $1,118 of the total $8,007 that was raised to support Community Gardens. “Employees have a great time at this event because they can have fun together while helping an important cause. This year we called our team “The Madhatters” and we wore all types of ridiculous hats,” said Elizabeth Kindlon, CEO of Community Resource Federal Credit Union. “Community Resource also sponsored the event to help CDCG raise money for its community gardens, street planting, urban landscaping, squash hunger, veggie mobile, and garden education center programs,” added Ms. Kindlon. Community Resource Federal Credit Union is the tenth largest credit union in the capital district with 5,700 members and $61 million in assets. Community Resource is a community credit union serving those that live, work, worship, or attend school in Albany County and their families.

GUILDERLAND CHILD, WILL HAVILAND, 9, GOES TO WASHINGTON, D.C. AS NEW YORK DELEGATE FOR CHILDREN’S CONGRESS 2009 Child Delegates to Testify at Congressional Hearing on Type 1 (Juvenile) Diabetes and Urge Legislators to “Promise to Remember Me” East Greenbush, NY (Jan. 26, 2009) –Will Haviland, age 9, is one of 150 children throughout the U.S. selected to represent his state on Capitol Hill this summer to remind Congress and the Administration of the critical need to find a cure for a disease they live with every day— type 1 (juvenile) diabetes. These children—ages 4 to 17, representing all 50 states and the District of Columbia and all diagnosed with type 1 diabetes— will converge on Washington, D.C., to tell their stories and urge lawmakers to help find a cure during the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation’s Children’s Congress 2009, from June 22 to 24, 2009. Will, a student at The Doane Stuart School who lives in Guilderland, has been named a delegate representing New York State in the Children’s Congress. JDRF is the world’s largest charitable funder of type 1 diabetes research. Led by JDRF International Chairman Mary Tyler Moore, JDRF’s Children’s Congress 2009 will include Congressional visits by the child delegates and a Congressional hearing where Ms. Moore, select delegates, researchers, and business and community leaders will testify on the need for continued funding for research on diabetes and related complications. Ms. Moore and the child delegates, under the theme of “Promise to Remember Me,” will ask Members of Congress to support an increase in federal funding for diabetes research. “The day that you or your child is diagnosed with type 1 diabetes is a day you will never forget,” said Ms. Moore, who has had type 1 diabetes for almost 40 years. “Members of Congress will now have the chance to give these children and their parents another day they will never forget. Instead, this time will be a day of hope instead of a day of fear”. Will, who was selected to Children’s Congress through JDRF’s Northeastern New York Chapter, in East Greenbush, was diagnosed with diabetes when he was four years old. The day-to-day fight to stay alive is a struggle for him and his family. When asked about his participation in the 2009 Children’s Congress, Will said, “I remember when I didn’t have diabetes, but now I have to wear an insulin pump 24/7. I hope that someday I won’t have to wear my pump anymore. I can’t wait to explain to Congress what it is like to live with type 1 diabetes and why it is so important to me and other people with this disease for the government to spend money on research to find a cure.” Cynthia Ford, of Grosse Point Farms, Michigan is Chair of Children’s Congress 2009. Ms. Ford, her husband Edsel and son Albert, who has type 1 diabetes, serve as the designated Chair Family. “Our entire family understands what a vital role this event plays in the furthering of our mission to cure diabetes. We are honored and excited to be leading such an extraordinary group of delegates who truly will have all the Washington leaders knowing they need to 'Promise to Remember' all of us who crave a true cure for diabetes and its complications." 12

OUR TOWNE GUILDERLAND

: Winter 2009 - - -

Over 1,500 children from all 50 states between the ages of 4 and 17 applied to take part in Children’s Congress 2009. Children were selected by committee based on the need for focus in their Congressional district and in a way that divided the group evenly by ages. “Choosing the 150 delegates from the pool of over 1,500 applicants this Children’s Congress was a difficult process and a challenge,” said Ford. “Truly, all 1,500 who applied would have served this role well.” Children’s Congress has been held every other year since 1999; it has become the largest media and grassroots event held in support of finding a cure for type 1 diabetes. For this once-in-alifetime experience, the newly-selected delegates will follow in the footsteps of their predecessors in raising national awareness about type 1 diabetes and participating in personal advocacy at the highest levels of the United States government. In type 1 diabetes – the most serious and complicated form of the disease that accounts for some $174 billion in annual health care costs in the U.S. alone – a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin, the hormone that enables people to get energy from food. To survive, people with type 1 diabetes must test their blood sugar levels up to four or more times a day by pricking their fingers to draw blood, and then administering insulin through multiple, daily injections, or the use of a continuous infusion insulin pump. While trying to balance insulin with the amount of food eaten (which raises blood sugar) and exercise (which lowers blood sugar), people with type 1 diabetes must constantly be prepared for potential life-threatening hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) and hyperglycemic (high blood sugar) reactions. The long-term complications of diabetes include blindness, heart attack, kidney failure, stroke, nerve damage and amputations. While usually diagnosed in childhood, type 1 diabetes can also be diagnosed in adults. About JDRF JDRF is the leader in research leading to a cure for type 1 diabetes in the world. It sets the global agenda for diabetes research, and is the largest charitable funder and advocate of diabetes science worldwide. The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes children and adults suddenly, and can be fatal. Until a cure is found, people with type 1 diabetes have to test their blood sugar and give themselves insulin injections multiple times or use a pump – each day, every day of their lives. And even with that intensive care, insulin is not a cure for diabetes, nor does it prevent its eventual and devastating complications, which may include kidney failure, blindness, heart disease, stroke, and amputation.

Has the Winter Weather made a mess of your yard? Call Us Today to schedule your Clean-up!

Since its founding in 1970 by parents of children with type 1 diabetes, JDRF has awarded more than $1.3 billion to diabetes research, including more than $156 million in FY2008. In FY2008, the Foundation funded more than 1,000 centers, grants in laboratories, hospitals, and industry, and fellowships in 22 countries. For more information, visit the JDRF web site at www.jdrf.org or call 800-533-CURE.

Q A ď Ť

With Rit

Cascini Coldwell Banker Prime Properties

Q. What year did your business start? A. I began selling real estate in 1978 when the average price of a home was in the $40,000 range.

Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. When I started in real estate, I was teaching Social Studies at Guilderland High School. Teaching salaries in the 1970’s and 1980’s were somewhat low so I needed to earn additional income. I felt that working nights, weekends and during the summer would be beneficial. I retired from teaching in 2002 and now work full time in the real estate industry.

Q. What advice would you give people looking to buy a home now? A. Choose an experienced realtor who is knowledgeable, has integrity and has the skills to help you find the best value in a home. Also, buyers should have a number of inspections on the house (structural, termite, radon,). Finally, shop around for the best mortgage rate and terms.

Q. What advice would you give people looking to sell their home now? A. Sellers should price the house just above market value. Sellers will net more money for their home by not overpricing it. Also when selling your home the condition of the property will help dictate selling price. Be sure that your home shows well and that there is easy access to the property.

Q. What do you love most about the business? A. The real estate business allows you to work with a variety of personalities, wants and needs. I thoroughly enjoy working with people and either finding a home that they love or selling their house so that they can relocate.

Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business? A. The biggest challenge today is educating buyers and sellers with the current market conditions. Some sellers are unrealistic with what they think their house is worth while some purchasers believe that they can get basement bargains in this area.

Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. I want the community to know that I work for Coldwell Banker Prime Properties which is one of the leading real estate companies in the area. I have lived in Guilderland for the past 29 years. And I am experienced, have knowledge of the market, have integrity and I am willing to work extremely hard to get the job done. If you are buying or selling a home I would like to interview for the job. Thanks, Rit Cascini. I can be contacted at 640-4703 or rcascini@cbpp.com

Status Report

Full Day Kindergarten Conversion Updated January 22. 2009

The Early Childhood Advisory Committee reconvened on January 14 to review the status of the proposal made to convert to full-day K beginning in 2009-2010. In light of current economic concerns, including a projected 2.7 million dollar reduction in state aid revenue, the members of the committee agreed with district administration that inclusion of this proposal in the 2009-2010 superintendent’s budget would not be prudent at this time. The Guilderland Central School District remains committed to conversion to a full-day kindergarten model at a time when economic conditions are more suitable. The recommendations made by the Early Childhood Advisory Committee remain as a foundation upon which we can continue to strengthen program and support the development of our youngest learners. We thank all members of this committee for their dedication and hard work. Source: Guilderland Central School District Website
