notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org Guilderland, NY - As November approached, our early dose of winter weather served as a reminder to exercise caution when driving in inclement weather, and the importance of maintaining a safe distance from snowplow trucks. Town Highway employees perform a vital public safety purpose in clearing and maintaining roads, and you can help by not interfering with their job performance. Please also slow down and stay clear of police vehicles, emergency personnel, tow truck operators, and other responders to traffic stops or other activity. This time of year, with its shorter daylight hours and limited visibility, poses increased risks to officers and emergency personnel who are focused on their jobs. November is usually full of significant events, and this month is no different. On Monday, November 7th at 7pm, at Albany City Hall, the Common Council of the City of Albany will hold a public hearing on a proposed rezoning of properties on Sandidge Way (formerly Loughlin Street) from single family residential to multi-family residential. Because the proposed area is adjacent to homes in McKownville, the Albany County Planning Board, which is authorized by the State to provide a recommendation on projects that span the municipal boundary, required that the Town and its residents be provided with notice of the application. In its determination dated July 26, 2016, the County Planning Board recommended disapproval of the project due to its significant negative impacts on the surrounding residential neighborhoods, the limited ability of Fuller Road to handle the increased traffic from the rezoned properties and proposed development at SUNY Poly, the presence of adjacent cemeteries on both sides of Fuller Road, and the negative impacts of impervious surfaces on the groundwater table and handling capacity of the stormwater management system. Residents are urged to provide comments on the proposed law at the Common Council’s November 7th public hearing. A copy of the notice is available under the “News” section on the Town’s website (www.townofguilderland.org).

Peter G. Barber - Town Supervisor Transportation, Capital District Regional Planning Commission, and CDTA, with the assistance of consultants from the IBI Group of Albany. The draft study incorporates comments received at two public meetings at the Westmere Fire Department. The Westmere Corridor Study is the neighborhood plan for the area along Western Avenue between Church Street on the east and Route 155 on the west, and is the latest neighborhood study under the Comprehensive Plan adopted in 2000. The study includes detailed recommendations on a various topics including access management, traffic calming, connecting neighborhoods, pedestrian and bicycle facilities, landscaping, managing open space, vacant and underutilized lots and buildings, and gateway treatments. The draft study is accessible under the “News” section of the Town’s website. As the park system starts its quieter season, its extensive hiking trails, playgrounds, and picnic areas remain open. When snow arrives, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails will open at the Western Turnpike Golf Course and extend into the adjacent Tawasentha Park for the 2017 season, and sledding will take place at the Winter Recreation Area, a short distance south of the Tawasentha Park entrance.

On Tuesday, November 8, 2016, polls will be open from 6:00am to 9:00pm for voting in elections for various public offices. Please contact the Albany County Board of Elections, 32 North Russell Road, phone 487-5060, if you have any questions about polling places, obtaining an absentee ballot, or any other questions about voting. On Wednesday, November 9th, at 6pm, the Western Turnpike Golf Course is holding a“Member Appreciation Night”with complimentary hors d’oeuvres and cash bar at its clubhouse at Western Turnpike. The Western Turnpike Golf Course is also offering discounts for a paid 2017 membership, including free play for the rest of the 2016 season and specials for resident and non-resident members. You can obtain more information about the benefits of membership by calling the pro-shop at 456-0786, the Parks & Recreation Department at 4563150, or on the Town’s website under the “News” heading. On Thursday, November 10th at 7:00pm, the Town Board will hold a public hearing on the 2017 final budget. The adoption of the final budget is scheduled for Tuesday, November 15. Information about the proposed budget is available on the Town’s website. On Friday, November 11th, Town offices will be closed in observance of Veterans’ Day. Please take the time to remember and thank the women and men who served their country and their fellow citizens. On Tuesday, November 15th at 7:30pm, the Town Board will hold a public meeting on the draft Westmere Corridor Study which was prepared by representatives from the Town, Capital District Transportation Committee, Albany County, NYS Department of 4

While at Tawasentha Park, you may notice construction has begun on renovating the “Chalet,” an open-ended pavilion which, at about a 60 persons capacity, falls between the largest (200 persons) and smallest (40 persons) pavilions. All of the pavilions are available for rent. The Chalet is an indoor/outdoor pavilion, with a small woodstove, and will provide additional covered space for summer recreational programs. The renovation was made possible by grants obtained by Assemblymember Patricia Fahy and provided by the Hudson Mohawk Road Runners Club. I close by wishing you an enjoyable Thanksgiving, and thank you for taking the time to read these notes. Peter G. Barber, Town Supervisor

The View from Here... by Cheryl Lasher, President, Guilderland Chamber of Commerce

Our business community is generous beyond any public knowledge. It funds sports teams, 5K races, academic scholarships, Boy/Girl Scouts, donations to every medical issue, and so much more. Speaking to the business community (and individual donors), I have some thoughts for you: • Treat your charitable giving as any investment or operating expense. Plan now for your memberships, donations and sponsorships. • Look at the donations you made last year. Do you find overlapping causes or organizations? Would one larger gift make more of an impact? Would that larger gift offer an opportunity for good publicity? • Do you note your sponsorships on your Social Media or press releases? You should embrace instances to share good news. • Don’t want to exclude spur of the moment contributions? Then have a small designated fund. However, planned giving is a help for your cash flow projections. • Be sure to keep detailed records. You will save time and money with your accountant. • Finally, consider participation with your charity as part of your budget planning. There are terrific opportunities for team building such a company day at Habitat for Humanity or helping out at a food pantry around the holidays. The benefits are a stronger pride in your company for your staff, an opportunity for them to get to know each other better, and a positive impact in our communities. Not only is it budget season, it will soon be the season of giving. My advice to businesses – give and do yourselves a favor by giving wisely. Thank you to all our generous businesses who contribute in so many different ways!

DO’S AND DON’TS FOR ARTHRITIS PAIN By: Dr. Amanda Boccio Guilderland, NY - If you are one of the millions of Americans suffering from arthritis- listen up! Degenerative joint disease, (also known as osteoarthritis) is characterized by the deterioration of the cartilage that protects the ends of bones. This slow breakdown of cartilage over time puts abnormal stress on the surrounding tissues of the joints, resulting in stiffness and pain. Osteoarthritis is commonly the result of the normal wear and tear of aging- but did you know that diet and lifestyle play a tremendous role in our joint health? Protect your joints from accelerated damage, relieve pain and stiffness and improve your overall function by considering these nutrition and lifestyle changes: Do keep your weight in check. Due to the effect of gravity, being overweight or obese will place increased pressure on weight bearing joints, particularly the knees, hips and back. Don’t rely on heavily processed, fried or fast foods. These foods tend to be high in saturated fats, trans-fats and sodium, and cause an inflammatory state in our bodies. Additionally, processed foods often contain refined omega-6 oils, such as corn oil, which also contribute to an inflammatory state. Chronic inflammation promotes disease, and can aggravate or worsen pain associated with arthritic conditions. Do ensure you are getting essential fatty acids from anti-inflammatory omega-3’s to reduce inflammation, support normal body function and control pain and any inflammation associated with arthritis. Fatty fish such as salmon, walnuts and olive oil are great foods to add to your diet. Don’t eat bagels, muffins, white bread or pasta every day. To your body, these foods are very similar to eating sugar by the spoonful. Simple carbohydrates and sugar heighten your inflammatory response, causing the release of fibrin. Fibrin is a natural protein that is released during tissue injury. Remember, normal wear and tear in the joint cartilage is low grade tissue damage. When our bodies are inflamed from eating a poor diet, coupled with cartilage deterioration associated with arthritis, fibrin is continuously released, begins to build up, harden, and contributes to more stiffness and pain. Do satisfy your sweet tooth with fresh pineapple, because it contains the proteolytic enzyme bromelain. Bromelain is great for reducing an inflamed state, which can decrease pain associated with arthritis. Don’t be caught eating white potatoes and tomato sauce as your go-to vegetable. White potatoes, tomatoes, eggplant and peppers are known as “nightshade vegetables”. People with arthritis have been found to be sensitive to these foods, often noticing an association of their consumption with increased joint pain. Do fill your plate with sulfur containing foods such as broccoli, asparagus, eggs, onions and garlic as sulfur is helpful for protecting and healing bone, cartilage and connective tissue. Seasoning and flavoring your foods with garlic, ginger, turmeric and other herbs and spices reduce inflammation, and make it less likely for you to use excess salt. Don’t forget to exercise: Remember, motion is lotion. Walking, and water based aerobics classes are great for arthritis sufferers. Exercising in the water decreases stress on the weight bearing joints, but also allows for muscle strengthening as you move against the water’s resistance. Do consider topical gels and creams such as arnica, boswellia, castor oil, or capsaicin to soothe joint and muscle aches associated with exercise. Treating yourself to an Epsom salt soak or warm bath may also help pain and stiffness associated with arthritis. THANKFUL, GRATEFUL, BLESSED....... Guilderland, NY - It’s amazing to think it’s November already and that the holidays are just around the corner! We had such a busy and exciting year at our office, both professionally and personally. I graduated from the renowned Kois Center; Linda became a grandmother; Danielle moved into a beautiful new place; and we welcomed our new assistant, Sarah, to our team. We also launched our new website, www.oshinsofsmiles.com, and we are so very pleased with the positive comments and reviews we have been getting from our patients. I am thankful for having such a wonderful team who have exceptional ability and compassion. Their commitment to excellence and patient care is second to none. No matter how busy our days have been, happily we ran on time and our patients were provided with the highest level of care always. We are especially appreciative of the patients who we had to place on waiting lists and patiently waited for an appointment -no pun intended! I am grateful to have patients who have allowed me to take care of them. They have chosen us and placed trust in us as they know dental health is not a commodity. They appreciate the level of service and care we provide, the quality of products we use and the time we spend with each one to ensure the best overall experience. I feel blessed because every day I get to do what I love best, with a wonderful team and great patients! As the saying goes, “choose a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.” At Oshins of Smiles, our patients tell us we are like an extension of their own family. We believe that building a lifelong relationship with someone you trust is at the center of the patient experience. We welcome you all to visit our website and/or our office for a tour. We have some great specials going on now through December that make great holiday gifts for that special someone that will be sure to make them smile! This is also the time of year when many patients have flex money or insurance benefits they still need to use before the year is over, so call for your appointment and we will do our best to schedule a convenient time for you to come in. We wish you safe travels and a Thanksgiving holiday that keeps you smiling! With Oshins of Smiles, Dr. Steven Oshins

FEES AND COMMISSIONS IN THE FINANCIAL SERVICES INDUSTRY BY

DANIEL BAUER

Guilderland, NY - The retail financial services industry offers products and services through two very broad arms

but typically include cash flow analysis, retirement income planning, income tax analysis, portfolio management, estate

– broker-dealers and registered investment advisors. It is important for consumers of financial services to understand

distribution planning, etc. RIA firms are generally viewed as having fewer conflicts of interest with their customers

how their advisor is being compensated.

due to the non-transactional nature of the relationship.

The Broker-Dealer world consists of well-known firms such as Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley Smith Barney, and

The financial services industry has seen a large shift during the past 10 years away from the broker-dealer channel and

Wells Fargo, along with many independent firms such as LPL Financial, Commonwealth Financial, and VOYA Financial Advisors. Broker-dealers are regulated by both

the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA) and their revenue is generally a result of commissions generated by securities transactions. A securities transaction may be the purchase or sale of a stock, bond, mutual fund, real estate investment trust, variable annuity, variable life insurance, etc. An advisor with such a firm is considered a ‘registered representative’ of the firm, and his/her income is generally based on transactions processed on behalf of clients. Commissions are typically built into the price that a consumer pays for a securities product, which means that the consumer is not making a direct payment to the brokerdealer firm.

average annual rate of 8% from 2004 to 2012, while brokerdealer channels actually saw an overall decline in business during this same period. We attribute this trend to the notion that RIA firms owe their clients a fiduciary duty, which is a much stronger duty of care than the suitability standard required by broker-dealer firms. In other words, an RIA firm is required to sit on the same side of the table as its client, while a broker-dealer firm is not. AllSquare Wealth is a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA), and our primary business is to provide fee-only advice and guidance to our customers.

The Registered Investment Advisor (RIA) world is regulated by the SEC and/or the states in which it serves clients.

We have developed a white paper entitled ‘An Overview of the Financial Services Industry’ that provides much more detail on this topic. If you would like to receive a copy

Thank you to all who continue to support us and our Fund Raising events. To make a Donation Mail to: Guilderhaven inc. 6655 Route 158 Altamont, NY 12009

www.guilderhaven.org FOR ADOPTION Batman is a super friendly, easygoing, active and playful one year old neutered male kitty. He is a smallsized cat weighing in at 9 pounds. He is an all-black kitty with stunning green eyes who loves to give you eye contact. He is extremely affectionate and loves to cuddle your lap and be carried around in your arms. Batman makes sweet chirping noises to communicate with you and will meet you at the door when you come in. He enjoys human interaction and will want to be where you are in the house enjoying a family activity. Batman likes to sleep with his foster Dad every night along with the other kitties. He is loving, high-energy, yet easy-going and affectionate all in one! Poor Batman! We found him living under a porch of an abandoned house with nothing to eat. It seems his owner had moved and simply left him behind. He would come up to anyone walking by as if to ask for food. Batman is so happy to be inside and has no interest in going back outdoors. The best home for Batman would be one with at least one young cat that wishes to play with him. He seems to flourish in a multi-cat home. He has tested negative for FIV/Felv and is up-to-date on his vaccines. If you would like more info, contact 461-0251 or brightsky@nycap.rr.com

“TANNER” is a neutered male cat, who was found in a back yard in January looking for food. When we took him in to be neutered, he tested positive for Feline Leukemia, therefore cannot be released back outside with other cats. He needs a home without other cats or with other cats who are Feline Leukemia positive. He is very friendly: likes to be brushed, loves to play w/toys, sat in my lap while sewing at the machine. I pick him up all the time. He had his Rabies Vaccine and Distemper Vaccine. He doesn’t seem to trust the foster dog that is downstairs w/ him so wants to atttack the dog (they are separated by a doggie gate and Tanner gets to come out when the foster dog is out for a walk. As soon as he hears us coming, he darts back to his room. If interested in this sweet cat, please call Deb at 518-765-5007.

URGENT NEED FOR BARN HOMES Six cats who have been living in an abandoned garage in Schenectady have lost their forever home as the building is being torn down. We are in need of forever barn homes to relocate the kitties. The cats are fully vetted including spay/ neuter and vaccines. They are feral but very “human-aware” as they are tended to daily. They are feral, young and get along well with each other (most are related). We have many years of success relocating feral cats. Our hope is to transfer the cats in pairs. If you have any opportunities for a possible barn situation for these kitties - even if for just one pair - please call 518-461-0251 or brightsky@nycap.rr.com

Ivy is a very tiny energetic playful female looking for her forever home. She weighs in at seven pounds and is just now one year old. She enjoys people and will meet you at the door when you come home. Ivy is social and will be wherever you are in the house. She enjoys other kitties in her foster home. Ivy was found literally starving in an abandoned garage in the inner-city while struggling to feed her five kittens. She was being a great mom at the detriment of her personal health. The neighbors would watch her and the kittens but no one stepped up to feed them. Ivy is our hero! Ivy is spayed, up-todate on her vaccines, and negative for FIV/ Felv. Feel free to contact 518-461-0251 or brightsky@nycap.rr.com for more info.

TRASH TALK

by Vince Coppola, Owner of Scrapster, LLC Guilderland, NY - AT LONG LAST, Fall has arrived! So what does that mean exactly? I looked up the origin (etymology) of the phrase “at long last”. It first appeared as “at the long last” in a 1523 poem by John Skelton. The Oxford dictionary suggests “last” is used here as a noun, meaning a continuance. I wonder if John Skelton was alive today and detailing his car, would he wax poetic? But I digress. Next I considered “Autumn”. While I could bore you with the details, because hey, it’s fun to be annoying sometimes, the short version is that it’s history is kind of known, but not really. It basically means “end of summer”. From etymonline.com: “Unlike the other three seasons, its names across the Indo-European languages leave no evidence that there ever was a common word for it.” So it’s like the pyramids in a way, right? Work with me on this one: Humans were just hanging around, catching some rays and eating grapes by the pool. Suddenly a cold breeze, some hi-tech meddling aliens land and they build several impossibly giant and perfect structures. When they finished , sometime around harvest time, they said: “See you guys later…hey, by the way, start calling this season Autumn.” Then they took off into space and made us wait for George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and J.J. Abrams to be born to tell us more about these crazy aliens! At long last, I looked up “Fall”. I was drawn to the 13th century definition meaning “to pass casually (into some condition)”. Perfect description. Like everyone else around here, I love summer, but have been waiting for the heat and humidity to go away already. Every Indian summer day meant one less day of decent cool weather. Now that we have finally passed casually into Fall itself, I am taking advantage by getting some long overdue projects out of the way. With 10,000 square feet of warehouse to organize I really have my hands full. I am building shelves, organizing everything that goes together, cleaning out about 200 bins of who knows what, throwing out all the junk, etc.
