notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org

I

’ve been hearing a lot of rumors lately that spring is finally here with us. After the winter season we’ve experienced over the past few months, I’m inclined to want to see a few solid weeks without snow and/or freezing temperatures, but I’m always hopeful. Guilderland has certainly had a tough enough winter to be deserving of an especially mild and beautiful spring, a sentiment I’m sure most of our residents would agree with. The Town workforce will be out and busy dealing with the residue of winter and getting ready for spring in our parks and on our streets in the weeks ahead. They will be working hard to catch up on things so our residents can enjoy our parks and golf course, and that winter yard debris is removed in a timely manner. Please be patient as we work to get our facilities in shape for the enjoyment of all our residents. The snow may barely be gone, but it’s not too soon for families with children to be thinking about the opportunities available to them through the Guilderland Summer Recreation Program, which offers day camp, sports, and activity programs for Guilderland’s children during the summer months. The variety of offerings is broad, and the pricing is reasonable. Brochures for the 2014 season have been distributed, and families should take the time to look them over. Registration forms can be turned in at the Guilderland Parks and Recreation Office on Route 146, across from Tawasentha Park. For those who prefer, on-line registration is available at www. guilderlandrec.com. Please call the Guilderland Parks and Recreation Office at 456-3150 if you have any questions about any of these summer programs. The Town of Guilderland’s Spring Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day program will take place at the Town Highway Garage on French’s Mill Road on Saturday, May 10, from 8:00 A.M. until 2:00 P.M. As you go through your spring cleaning/summer preparation routine, separate out materials eligible for this program (which include a wide range of cleaners, chemicals,

34 th Annual

paints, and other household items) and pack them up and bring them to the Highway Garage on May 10, where they will be removed from your vehicle for you and processed in a safe, environmentally appropriate manner. You will need a pass to participate in this program. Passes can be obtained free of charge at either the Town Clerk’s Office in Town Hall or at the Guilderland Transfer Station on French’s Mill Road during regular business hours. A full list of materials eligible for recycling is available on the Transfer Station page on the Guilderland website, www.townofguilderland.org. If you have any questions, please call the Transfer Station at 456-6776. The Household Hazardous Waste Day program is funded in part through a grant from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Our Town parks will be in full swing before you know it, with a wide variety of sports activities taking place at Nott Road, DiCaprio, Keenholts, and Tawasentha Parks, and the trails at Tawasentha Park filling up with walkers and runners. Meanwhile, Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course will likely be open by the time you receive this issue of Our Towne. We’ll be running some attractive specials over there to get the Town’s golfers feeling that first blush of spring. Call the Pro Shop at 456-0786 for information on special rates or to book a tee time. We’ve waited a long time for spring to arrive this year, and we all deserve to enjoy it. Just be sure to drive/walk/bicycle safely as you do so. Ken Runion, Supervisor

any times we get asked the question, what exactly does a Chamber of Commerce do? Well, while every chamber offers ribbon cuttings, networking events, referral services, and education seminars, and most offer health insurance to their members, each chamber also has a local flair. We are a 501(c)6 organization which means we are a not for profit business organization funded almost solely through dues from our members and through our programs with events and sponsorships. Being a smaller suburban chamber we are able to help bridge the community and the businesses in our area through community events such as Souped Up on Guilderland that takes place in the Fall, Ladies Night out Health and Wellness Night, our 3Chairs for Guilderland Program we did a couple years back, and a Shop-Hop shop local program we are bringing back this summer. Speaking of Shop Local- we know how cliché that sounds. However, the reason why so many different chambers advocate for shop local is because it really truly does keep people in our community employed and in business, and those businesses and tax dollars that stay local help enhance and fund the many town services we have and utilize every day.

These are just part of the reason why we stress the importance of not only supporting old and new businesses in and around Guilderland. As a chamber, we are also looking for new and innovative ways to support our businesses. In this day and age it is getting harder and harder to keep up with the times. So that is why we have rolled out a Google “indoors maps” program for our members. This new program enables businesses to have an indoor view of their business through google, very similar to their street view program, except the camera takes pictures of, you guessed it, Indoors! So you will be able to get a virtual tour of your local businesses. We are also about to launch a new mobile app for members so that they will be able to take us with them and keep up on all of our community news and events while they are on the go. The Guilderland Chamber is working hard for our members and our community this spring! If you have any questions, comments, or ideas for us, feel free to give me a call at 456-6611! And I hope you enjoy the first weeks of “spring”! Sincerely, Erika Gauthier, Interim President Register for chamber events at www.guilderlandchamber.com/calendar.html

t’s hard to believe that nearly three month ago my dental office was destroyed by a fire. However, I am excited to report that the design for my new office is underway. Stay tuned for more details to come in the future! From now until the time I reopen my new office, I will be seeing patients at a local dental office located at 3734 Carman Road. To schedule an appointment, or obtain details about the new office please call 356-5635. Turning to the subject of fluoride, keep in mind that April showers bring May flowers, as the saying goes. Interestingly, all sources of water, to include oceans, lakes, rivers and those “April showers” provide the natural mineral fluoride. Fluoride has been shown to prevent cavities in both children and adults. There are two ways fluoride accomplishes the goal of making teeth more resistant to the acid attacks that cause cavities. One is by topical application such as that applied by your dentist to the surface of your teeth, or the use of toothpaste or mouth rinses containing fluoride.

z

The other way you can benefit from fluoride is by systemic use. By this term we mean that we can absorb fluoride through a source such as our water supply. Fluoride strengthens teeth enamel making it stronger and more resistant to cavities, as well as helping to rebuild the enamel itself. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention sites fluoridation as “one of the ten great public health achievements.”

Remember to brush regularly with a toothpaste containing fluoride and smile often. It’s contagious in a good way! If you have any questions please call our receptionist Barbara at 356-5635. With Oshins of Smiles, Dr. Steven Oshins

When we invited Stephen to be the speaker, his immediate question was, “What would be nurturing for your volunteers?” He recognizes that caregiving at whatever level is demanding and stressful.. Stephen proposed a program that would include “super gentle” chair yoga, some guided meditation, journaling, small and large group discussion, a “brief ” talk on compassion and closing with centering. Some tools for the volunteers going forward. Community Caregivers volunteers are your neighbors. They provide transportation, assurance calls, shopping, visiting, light housekeeping and other non-medical assistance to neighbors in Guilderland, Bethlehem, Berne, Knox, New Scotland and now Albany. Go to www.communitycaregivers.org to find out more about Caregivers and what becoming a volunteer involves. Neighbors helping neighbors keep their independence and remain in their homes and communities is Community Caregivers’ mission. Consider giving some of your time. What is a CDFA? A CDFA is a professional, either with legal or financial expertise that works with individuals to help them understand the financial reality of a divorce. A divorce involves a myriad of issues beyond the dissolution of the marriage, such as spousal support, child support, and a division of the assets and debts. A CDFA evaluates a client’s current financial picture and helps identify the short-term and long-term effects of dividing property and debts.

However, the Wife’s settlement offer may not be the best option for her. The house is not a liquid asset, which means that while it is worth $100,000 she cannot access its value unless she sells it. If selling the house is not part of the Wife’s plan, then this presents a problem for her. If the house is to be sold, there may also be tax ramifications to the Wife as a result of the sale, which means she may be receiving less money from the house than she initially thought. Further, while the house may be an asset, it is also a burden and will require upkeep. So it may not make sense for the Wife to keep the house if it is costly to maintain and she cannot afford to maintain it.

As discussed in past articles, New York is an “equitable distribution state. This means that, during a divorce, property and debt is divided between spouses “equitably, which is another way of saying “fairly. Many people believe that equitable distribution means an automatic 50-50 division of marital property and debt. This is not the case.

Depending on the type of retirement asset, the Wife may be restricted as to how and when she can access the money in that account. There may also be tax consequences to her if she makes any withdrawals from the account. In our example, a CDFA can help to identify and educate the Wife about these issues so that she can thoroughly evaluate a settlement proposal.

Many people also believe that adding up the value of marital property, subtracting out the debt, and then dividing by two is the fairest way to divide assets. While this may sound fair in concept, it may not always be fair in practice, especially if the marital property consists of many different assets. For example, let’s say a married couple owns a home and each spouse has one retirement account. The net value of the house is $100,000. The husband’s retirement account is worth $150,000 and the Wife’s retirement account is worth $50,000. So the total value of the marital estate is $300,000. The Wife’s settlement offer is that she keeps the house and her retirement account and the Husband keeps his retirement account. The Wife views this proposal as fair because

T

ea is the second most widely consumed beverage in the world, second only to water. In addition to its obvious hydrating properties and the simple pleasure found in drinking a cup of tea, tea has many health benefits. These include reduction of heart attack and stroke risk, prevention of certain cancers, strengthened cardio-vascular system, improved digestion, reduced tooth decay, enhanced immune system, and reduced bacterial infections.

Tea is also high in antioxidants. Antioxidants are touted for neutralizing free radicals that damage cells. There are many antioxidants and tea has a particularly powerful one. It is called epigallocatechin 3-gallate or EGCG. EGCG is more present in green and white tea and less so in black tea. It is also found in chocolate, grapes and berries, but in lesser amounts.

Tea and its associated health benefits originated around 5,000 years ago. Modern medicine has been around 100 years, which is only 2% of tea history. It relaxes the bronchial tubes and helps decrease swelling in the lungs as well as increasing heart health with its antiinflammatory properties. Theobromine is a vasodilator which opens up the blood vessels, aiding circulation, and may be responsible for lowered blood pressure.

Robert MacNeil’s visit to Guilderland by Natalie McDonough

2228 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 456-2400 • www.guilpl.org

W

e are very much looking forward to our next Notable Author event on Friday, May 9 at 7:30pm featuring esteemed journalist and author, Robert MacNeil. Mr. MacNeil is coming to the Capital District just for this event which we are able to offer to our patrons thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, Bouchey and Clarke and the Guilderland Library Foundation. Free tickets to the event will be available on Monday, April 7 at 10am when the library opens. The Library Foundation is hosting a wine and cheese fundraiser at 6:30 and tickets for this event, which are $25, will also be available on Monday, April 7. Checks can be mailed to the library or brought to the Reference Desk and should be made out to the Guilderland Library Foundation. For more information about this event, please call the library at 456-2400 and speak to Natalie McDonough, Department Head for Programming and Public Services (ext. 122) or Mark Curiale, Public Information Officer (ext. 112). Burden of Desire (1992, FICT MAC) The novel begins with the 1917 explosion in Halifax Harbour when a munitions ship collides with another ship and a fire on the munitions ship results in the leveling of buildings in the downtown Halifax. The story focuses on a free-spirit, Julia Montgomery Robinson and two men who have fallen for her. Portrait of Julia (2013, FICT MAC) In this sequel to Mr. MacNeil’s 1992 novel, we return to the life of Julia and her suitors in a post-WW1 and a world beyond Halifax in London and Paris. Mr. MacNeil will be talking about this book at his program, and copies will be available for sale at the event from The Open Door Bookstore in Schenectady. Robert MacNeil Reports: Autism Now (2011, DVD 618.928 ROB) This documentary explores the development disorder of autism. It is a subject that is very close to Mr. MacNeil’s own family, as his grandson Nick has autism and appears on the DVD. The six-part PBS special is a comprehensive look at autism, a development disorder that manifests itself during the first three years of life. Breaking News (1998, FICT MAC) Go behind the scenes in the cutthroat world of television journalism by a man who has been witness to the business for over 50 years. Grant Munro has covered presidents and world events in his years as a television anchorman, but even he is not immune to change of journalism from hard news to pretty faces, with someone waiting, not quietly, in the wings to take his job. Other works by Mr. MacNeil include: Looking for My Country: Finding Myself in America, Wordstruck: A Memoir, The Voyage and The Story of English (with William Cran and Robert McCrum) and Do You Speak American?: companion to the PBS television series (with William Cran).

REAL ESTATE EXPERTS REVEALS HOW TO GUARANTEE HOME SELLS Guilderland NY- Your biggest dilemma when buying another home is deciding whether to buy first or sell first. Either way is risky because you could wind up owning two homes or none at all. Well, our guaranteed sale program solves this. You see, before you even list with us, we prepare a total market analysis of your home, including a computerized printout of all comparable home sales, absorption rates, and current listings in the area. Using this information, together with you we determine a market value for your home. You then receive our upfront guarantee in writing before we even begin to market your home. This is better than RISK FREE because it gives you the security of knowing that your home is guaranteed to sell. This is a really important guarantee for you as a home seller, because you win no matter what happens. Let me explain: We will aggressively market your home for 120 days. In the unlikely event that your home does not sell within the 120 day period, we will buy your home ourselves for the upfront guaranteed sale price that we set together. You’re doubly protected, because if during this 120 day timeframe you receive an offer from an outside buyer that is over the guaranteed price, you get the higher offer, not us. You see, we’re taking all the risk so you don’t have to. With our program you know your home will sell, and that you will always get the highest offer (whether it’s our agreed guaranteed sale price, or a higher offer from an outside buyer). When you access our guaranteed sale program, you can look forward to finding your next home with much greater peace of mind. Now when you see a home you like, you can immediately place a firm cash offer because you’ll know how much money your home will sell for. The best part about our guaranteed sale program is that it eliminates the usual stress and worry that most home sellers experience. No emotional roller coaster ride about getting stuck with

owning two homes or no home at all. Our guaranteed home sale program makes househunting fun. To find out about how our program can benefit you, please leave your address after the tone to receive your FREE industry report entitled, “How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes”. If you are planning to put your home on the market within the next six months or less, you’ll need to organize yourself quickly. Simply call us at 1-800-448-7016 Ext 1001 So if you plan to make your move within six months or less, please ask for Report #1. If you think it will be longer than six months before you list your home, the choices that you face are a little broader. So if you plan to list your home in longer than six months, please ask for Report #2. Again, to receive your free report, please leave us your mailing address, email address, and the specific address of the property you are interested in selling. As always if you want to get an idea of the value of your home instantly, simply visit us at www.Albanynyhomevalues.com and enter your property address for a free instant property evaluation.

TRASH TALK by Vince Coppola

E

arth Day is celebrated on April 22nd, internationally designated in 2009 by the United Nations. It began in 1970 as an “environmental teach-in” to promote ecology and respect for life on our lovely blue and green planet, as well as to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water, and soil pollution. Now celebrated in 190+countries worldwide, it represents the outstanding year long efforts of many millions of people to make the world a better place to live. There are many ways to celebrate Earth Day. Plant a tree, clean up a park or playground, pick up roadside trash, clean your own property or participate in a local recycling event. You should find several events to choose from and all offer responsible recycling to help make sure our landfills are not filled with hazardous materials or items that can be reused or repurposed.

Scrapster will co-host a major recycling event on Saturday May 10th from 9am – 12pm at Shank & Falvey Insurance on Route 50 in Burnt Hills. Even if you have to travel a little, it is a great excuse to visit Saratoga County and make a day out of it. Please call for more information or check our website for more details on what we will be accepting that day AT NO COST TO YOU! The list of items is huge and includes Air Conditioners, Dehumidifies, Computers, Televisions, any type or size of household appliance, car batteries, any type of scrap metal, wire, and much, much more. We hope to see you there. Can’t make it? Call us to schedule an appointment for us to come to you!

For us at Scrapster, every day is Earth Day. With our scrap metal recycling, all appliances and other metal items we pick up are taken apart and separated into basic components (wire, circuit boards, motors, etc.) for more effective re-use. We operate our junk removal service the same way…donating items like clothing and good quality furniture and separating cardboard boxes, metal, magazines, etc. so they are all recycled properly. Scrapster is local family owned business which provides a NO COST scrap metal and appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk removal and clean outs. We are convenient, reliable, insured, and (bonus!) we do all the work. Please give us a call today at (518) 505-5055 or visit our website at www.scrapster.com. CERTIFIED

Upcoming Events and Animals for Adoption:

IT’S A DOG, IT’S A BUTTERFLY, IT’S SUPER DOG! This handsome young gentleman is Alvin, a 1 yr old neutered male, up-to-date on all shots. Walks well on a leash, knows sit, crate trained, potty trained. Alvin has learned so much and has come so far so fast. He is truly a mixed breed; he has markings of so many different breeds and it truly makes him one unique dog. Alvin is in need of a permanent home ASAP!!! Alvin is extremely GENTLE and loves to CUDDLE! He was found wandering the streets. He LOVES everyone. He is timid because everything is still very new to him, but he warms up quickly and he learns fast. Alvin is brave enough to do new things with you, but he will be sitting on your foot, making sure it is okay. He is a total love bug who sleeps under the covers. He enjoys playing ball and going for long walks. He enjoys being around other dogs and seems to take comfort being with them. Alvin does not do well at the shelter. He is unable to come out of his shell and cannot function in the kennel. He is a super easy boy and fits right into a home. He definitely thinks he is a lap dog and he can’t wait to have a place to call his own. Please call for more information 331-5790. SAVE THE DATE!: 1. April 26, 2014 11am-4pm - ROCKS Adopts!
