Guilderland, NY -With winter in the rear view mirror (we hope), your Town Parks are open and are being readied for another season. First, I offer a quick reminder that families with children in school should have received by “backpack mail” the brochure for the Town’s Summer Day Camp and Activity Camp programs. You can also register for the program in the 2016 Summer Recreation brochure at www.guilderlandrec.com or at the Town’s Parks and Recreation Department’s office across from Tawasentha Park. The Town’s Western Turnpike Golf Course is nearly ready for its 2016 opening. Residents receive a discount on green fees. Please call the Pro Shop at 456-0786 to inquire about specials or to book a tee time. In last month’s notes, I announced that the Town Board would soon award contracts for the construction of the new Tawasentha Park pool house. Those contracts were awarded and the construction is well under way, with the foundation placed. We anticipate the new pool house’s opening in June. Please remember to pick up a free vehicle sticker for the use of Town parks and pool at the Parks and Recreation Department’s office, the Transfer Station, and Town Hall.

Please help our Water Department’s employees provide superior services by following these requirements.
As with prior monthly notes, I would like to share some information that may be of interest to residents. A SPRING WITHOUT SNEEZES By: Dr. Amanda Boccio Guilderland, NY - Spring is upon on us. The days are getting longer, the birds are singing, and the leaves and flowers will soon begin to bud. We open our windows to welcome fresh air and warm breezes; but for many, a choir of coughing, sneezing and sniffling caused by environmental allergies accompanies the much-anticipated change in weather. Others may struggle with allergy symptoms year-round. Consider these natural solutions to ease your allergies so they do not stop you from celebrating the season! Allergic responses include, but are not limited to, nasal and sinus congestion, coughing, sneezing, runny nose, itching, watery eyes, headaches, fatigue, and skin rashes. Pollen, dust, mold, animal dander, food additives and chemicals are all common allergens. An allergy is the body’s inappropriate response to a non-toxic substance that is found naturally in the environment. Our immune system is our first line of defense against foreign invaders that cause infection and illness. In allergy sufferers, the immune system inaccurately identifies harmless substances (like pollen) as a foreign invader, which stimulates white blood cells. In attempt to fight off the foreign substance, white blood cells release chemicals, such as histamine. The excessive release of histamine causes symptoms of an allergic reaction. Making some simple changes to your diet may have a significant impact on the severity of your allergy symptoms. A diet that is high in red meat or unhealthy omega-6 fats increases the amount of arachidonic acid in your system. This acid is necessary in small amounts to ensure proper function of the immune system, but the body can produce the amount it needs naturally. When there is increased amounts of arachidonic acid, there is an increase in chemicals that produce allergic inflammation, worsening your allergic response to the environment. Eat lean sources of protein, preferably grass fed and wild caught to keep omega-6 intake in check. Dairy products, sugar, wheat, and food additives are also very mucous producing, so limiting or avoiding these foods will help keep coughing, sneezing and sniffling under control. You can replace these aggravating foods with
foods with anti-allergic properties such as: whole grains, dark leafy vegetables, cold pressed flax oil, and proteins high in the anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, such as salmon and cod. Pineapple, papaya, and turmeric contain antiinflammatory components which not only help ease the body’s inflammatory response to allergen, but are great for overall health. Remember, a majority of the immune system is housed in the GI tract, so balancing the beneficial bacteria in the gut can help improve immune function and prevent the body’s “over-reaction” to environmental allergens. Consider adding a probiotic supplement to your daily routine for a healthy immune system and optimal wellness. If prescription or over the counter allergy medications are not giving you complete relief of your symptoms, try adding these all natural remedies: •
Saline Nasal Rinse with a Neti Pot
•
Steam Inhalation (add essential oils of eucalyptus, rosemary, and tea tree)
•
Cool Mist Humidifier
•
Air Purifier with a HEPA filter
•
Eat Local Honey
•
Some house plants help remove pollutants from indoor air: Areca Palm, Bamboo Palm, Boston Fern, English Ivy, and Peace Lily are some examples.
Finally, it is important to avoid the accumulation of allergens as much as possible. Frequently clean dust collectors such as rugs, drapes and furniture. Bathe and rinse your hair after being outdoors. Change your pillowcase daily. Avoid fragranced products, secondhand smoke, and have your home tested for the presence of mold if necessary. As always, if you have questions about this article please feel free to contact us at the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center at 51-869-3415. Please visit our website for more information at www.sportsandspinalwellness.com. We would be happy to be a part of your healthcare team.

Dream Big ~ Dream Often By Master Rice Guilderland, NY - When I was a teen I remember thinking, as I signed yearbooks for friends, that they should save it because someday it will be worth a lot. Now I sign belt testing applications, blackbelt certificates and broken boards for young children who overcame a challenge, hold them dear and gain inspiration from the experience. I also remember dreaming of being a college professor. My path did not lead me to a university, but I did become a high school teacher. When I moved to this area with my family I remember dreaming that I would work in the Guilderland School District. Not only did that happen, but in order to teach one class I had to be accepted by SCCC as an adjunct professor. Dream big, but recognize when dreams come true, even if they are not exactly in the form you once thought they would be. As we grow our path changes along a timeline that is linear and offers no chance to go back and check the other possible paths. As a result there are no bad choices, only just choices(my mother taught me that). You can never know if the other choice would have ended worse. I have played the game and have been successful imagining a worse situation for any choice anyone has presented me with. Dreaming or wishing or hoping or however you want to think of it, is important to us because it keeps us moving, choosing and acting. Desires we had when younger often manifest themselves in other ways when we are older. The trick is to recognize them and become satisfied that you have achieved them, all the while enjoying the journey all of your dreams sent you on. As I watched the olympics when I was young I often dreamed of being on a USA National Team. Every time I hear our National Anthem, I stand straight, hand on heart, and some times tear up. It is the result of my respect for our country, the sacrifices service personal make and my dream of success as an athlete. I continue to dream of this, but I do not kid myself at all. I am not really a candidate for the national Taekwondo team, but now I am at least a worthy competitor in my division. The person that beats me to gain that spot on the USA National Team will demonstrate techniques that I will feel close to, even if not there yet. This will give me a feeling of belonging, even if not winning. Dream big, and be in the game, that’s my motto, because maybe a dream will come true again, even if not in the form I once thought. Lesson of the month: Dream big, dream often but most importantly recognize the many forms a dream-come-true can present itself. Don’t question choices after they are made, just make them and keep moving forward. If you are stuck in the past and want to change something please let me convince you that even if you could go back, you should not change anything because the probability that the other choice will be better is less than you think; life is funny that way.

What Does it Mean to be the Executor of an Estate? by Robert G. Randall, Jr. and Denise M. Randall
When you consult an attorney to prepare your Will, one of the basic questions you will be asked is whom you wish to appoint as Executor. Our experience is that many people have only a vague notion of what it means to be the Executor of an estate. The following is intended to give you some basic information on what is expected. Q. Who can be the Executor of an estate? A. Anyone 18 years or older can be the Executor of an estate. The Executor is named in the Will. If you are named as the Executor, you do not have to accept the position. Most Wills provide for a successor Executor in the event the primary Executor is unwilling or unable to serve.
Q. While waiting to be appointed Executor, what should I do? A. You will need to “marshall the assets” of the deceased. This means documenting the deceased’s belongings, gathering information on bank accounts and investments, and making arrangements for the ongoing maintenance of any real property the deceased owned.
Q. Does the Executor need to have any special skills? A. There are no specific requirements for serving as Executor. However, an Executor is considered a fiduciary position, so all tasks must be carried out in accordance with the law, the Will, and for the benefit of the beneficiaries. Failure to faithfully perform the duties of an Executor may result in personal liability with respect to the beneficiaries.
Q. Once appointed, what do I do? A. Although the Executor is not personally liable for paying any of the deceased’s debts, your attorney will open a checking account for the estate and you will need to pay the valid claims of all creditors from that estate account. These include any debts owed before the deceased passed away as well as the funeral expenses. Depending on the terms of the Will, land taxes may have to be paid. You are absolutely forbidden from commingling estate moneys with your own moneys. Q. How long will I serve if I am appointed an Executor? An estate bank account must be completely separate from your own accounts. A. It is hard to predict how long the administration of any particular estate will You may never spend estate moneys on any of your own personal expenses. take. Sometimes small estates have more complex issues than larger ones because of an absence of prior estate planning. However, in New York State an estate must Q. Being an Executor is a serious responsibility with many opportunities for costly errors. If the deceased is a loved one, you will be called upon to act responsibly during a time of grief. To assist you in fulfilling your job efficiently and effectively, consult an attorney experienced in Estate Planning and Estate Probate.

TAWASENTHA POOL BUILDING GROUNDBREAKING
Spring Cleaning your Teeth Spring is here! The longer daylight hours and warmer weather mean spring cleaning for a lot of us. This year, take time from your dusting and organizing to treat yourself to a little spring cleaning of your teeth. One of the best ways to keep your smile bright and shiny is to have them professionally cleaned at least every six months. Just like your home, regular maintenance and cleaning does not reach all the nooks and crannies. You do some extensive cleaning and organizing a couple of times a year to keep those hard to reach areas clean. The same goes for your teeth! Regular brushing and flossing is great, but to keep teeth really clean and healthy, a professional cleaning is the only way to remove certain types of plaque and tarter build up. Your mouth is full of bacteria. Over 300 strains of it, in fact. Many of those strains are able to metabolize sugars into acid that softens and wears away enamel, causing cavities to form. That same bacteria is also responsible for getting beneath your gums and causing gum disease. Has your mouth ever felt slimy at the end of the day? That’s plaque bacteria that’s been building up all day. You brush and floss to keep its spread in check, but that won’t stop it from causing serious problems in the meantime!
On Thursday, March 24th, the Town of Guilderland held a groundbreaking ceremony for the new pool building at Tawasentha Park. Mark Schafer of M.A. Schafer Construction has begun the foundation work with an estimated completion of mid-June 2016. NYS State Senator George Amedore and Assemblymember Pat Fahy were joined by John Decatur of Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., Town Board member Rosemary Centi, Supervisor Peter G. Barber, Parks Supervisor Greg Wier, Ken Johnson of Delaware Engineering, Town Board Member Lee Carman and Linda Cure and Amy Boyt of the Parks & Recreation Department.
Without professional dental care, plaque is able to build up in the most vulnerable spots in your mouth. Those spots are usually ones that you can’t reach with normal cleaning habits, which is why they’re so dangerous. Not only will they remain full of bacteria, but it’s impossible for you to notice once a cavity has begun. We see plenty of patients who have been away from the dentist, only to return with multiple cavities in spots that they could never have seen or kept clean. The same goes for gum disease-when it’s able to sneak below your gumline it starts to spread like wildfire, causing an infection that your body responds to with inflammation. Inflamed gum tissues start to recede, bleed, swell and become sensitive. Many times those hard-to-clean spots are the first to become infected, and gum disease is only noticed once it is already spreading and becoming serious. Studies suggest that around 90 percent of us will end up with a cavity at some point in our lives. That means that a great many people, even if they see the dentist regularly, will develop tooth decay. The trick to treating a cavity when it’s just a pinhole versus a serious problem is regular cleanings and exams. We use X-rays, digital scans and other imaging techniques to detect cavities when they’re barely forming. When we see even the smallest problem we’re able to address it right then and there with fluoride treatments, sealants, and fillings that can stop the spread of bacteria further and further into your teeth. Cleanings and exams also involve probing the size of your gingival pockets, which can give us an indicator of any gum disease. Even a few millimeters of variation is enough to allow us to identify, treat, and reverse the damage caused by gum disease.

EXPANDING OUR SERVICES WITH MEDIATION
by Leyla A. Kiosse
Guilderland NY - Mediation. Many of you have heard of it. Some of you may have experienced it. In this article, I will discuss what mediation is, what it is not, and the positives and negatives of mediation in the context of a matrimonial or family law matter. What is mediation? Mediation is an alternative method to resolving disputes between two parties. The parties meet with a neutral third party known as a “mediator.” The role of the mediator is to help parties communicate effectively and work together to reach an agreement. While the parties control the terms of the agreement, the mediator can help prepare the written agreement that encompasses the terms agreed upon. The written agreement, if properly signed, is binding on both parties. What mediation is not: mediation is not litigation and it is designed to be non-adversarial. The mediator does not “represent” the interests of either party. Mediators do not give advice to, or advocate for, either party. Since parties are not put in the position of adversaries, mediation can engender cooperation towards a common goal. Our clients have increasingly come to us asking about mediation services, and whether mediation would be the best option for his/her circumstances. Mediation can be beneficial for the right people. Mediation works best when both people are cooperative, can communicate effectively, and are willing to engage in open, honest, and fair negotiations. As a result, it can be less expensive and less time consuming. However, mediation is not a “one size fits all” process. Mediation is not appropriate in several situations. For example, mediation is never appropriate when there is a history of domestic violence between the parties. It is also not appropriate when there is a history of financial abuse by one party against the other, or when one party uses the “bully pulpit” to manipulate the other party.
While it is not necessary for a “mediator” to have any specialized legal training, selecting a mediator with expertise in matrimonial and family law is important. In order for the mediator to discuss each party’s legal rights and remedies the mediator must understand what the law is in New York concerning marriage, divorce, children, and support. Without that expertise, the mediator could be blindly leading people into agreements that do not reflect the law in this state, or, even worse, help to create agreements that violate the law and making them unenforceable. In order to satisfy the increasing demand for mediation, and enhance our services for our clients, we are pleased to now offer mediation. While New York does not require a “mediator” to attend mediation training, Attorney Margaret Tabak has recently completed a thirty-hour mediation training course approved by the New York Office of Court Administration. We believe that the combination of our legal expertise and Attorney Tabak’s mediation training allows us to offer the best mediation services available in the Capital District. To learn more about mediation and our other services, contact us!

TRASH TALK by Vince Coppola
owner of Scrapster LLC, Scrap & Junk Removal Service
HAPPY SPRING EVERYONE!!! Earth Day is coming up on April 22nd, and in the spirit of the season Scrapster is announcing our Spring Recycling Super Event regarding refrigerant (“Freon”) recovery. This stuff is essen al to our way of life (it keeps things cold), but it is absolutely terrible for the environment and we are kind of stuck with it. The main problem is with older refrigerants that damage the ozone layer, such as R-12 (worst stuff ever invented-see below) which was inside fridges, freezers and dehumidifiers, and R-22 which was used in air condi oners. It was a dark and stormy night…Freon was discovered in 1928 by Thomas Midgley. It worked fantas cally and was a huge hit, but…Freon is a CFC which stands for Chloro-Fluoro-Carbon. It’s stable at low al tude (nose height), but when it gets to the upper atmosphere, sunlight degrades it and the carbon atom detaches. Ozone is O3: three molecules of oxygen. The carbon atom grabs an oxygen molecule from ozone, crea ng carbon monoxide (bad) and turns the ozone into oxygen (O2). Then because it is s ll unstable, the carbon atom splits off again…and it goes in search of some more ozone to destroy. And this cycle goes on and on for 50-100 years by some es mates. Yikes. Side note: know what else Mr. Midgley blessed us with? LEADED GASOLINE. Yep. Want to know how he died? From inhaling too much Freon? No. Inhaling too much leaded gasoline? Nope. He got polio and designed a system of strings and pulleys to help him to be li ed from his bed. He accidentally became entangled in it and strangled to death. TRUE STORY. Too bad, he never finished his tractor beam project that was going to be used to draw us closer to the sun so the ocean water would always be warm wherever people went on vaca on. Rats! THE GOOD NEWS: We are fully EPA 608 cer fied for refrigerant recovery. This month we are running are offering FREE REMOVAL OF ANY APPLIANCE THAT CONTAINS FREON. The major household items that use Freon are refrigerators, freezers, wine coolers, dehumidifiers and air condi oners. So how do we recycle Freon? We use state of the art equipment to safely and effec vely vacuum the refrigerant out of its exis ng system into special tanks. It can then be properly recondi oned and kept out of the atmosphere. FACT: countless appliances are thrown away every single day that are not recycled properly. They get smashed apart or just sit in the woods bleeding refrigerant. If we all work together we can eliminate this major problem. Let’s do this! Scrapster is family owned local business which provides a NO/ LOW COST scrap metal and appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk, furniture and TV removal and clean outs. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. We are convenient, reliable, insured, and we do all the work. Please call us today for more details about our programs at (518) 505-5055 or visit our website to set up an appointment online at www.Scrapster.com. 20

French’s Hollow Fairways
Q. Describe your business and when did you start?. A. French’s Hollow Fairways is a 9-hole, par 36, family owned and operated golf course that opened in 1971. Q. Where are you located? A. Our address is 4681 Hurst Rd., Guilderland Center, NY. We are a half mile past the entrance to Keenholts Park and the Guilderland Transfer Station just off Route 146. Q. What is your phone number and website? A. 861-8837 - www.frenchshollowgolf.com Q. How and why did you get into business?
Q. What other amenities or services do you offer?
A. My father, Dr. Z John Betlejeski, wanted to keep the natural setting and open space of the family dairy farm in tact, while changing to a more viable business enterprise. A golf course was the “Natural” solution.
A. We keep it simple; no swimming pool or tennis courts; just golf, carts, snack shop and golf supplies.
Q. When did you start at the course? A. I helped my Dad as far back as I can remember. As a prerequisite to getting my learners permit I had to learn how to drive a tractor. I started cutting fairways with a 7 gang mower when I was 16. My sister Mary started at a young age as well. Her first job was whipping the greens. We have run the course together for the last 20 years.
Q. What do you love about your business? A. Preserving the natural setting and open space. The trees and wildlife on the course are awesome. Q. What is your biggest challenge? A. The declining number of golfers and the time commitment it takes to play; especially 18 holes. Q. How have you responded to that challenge?
Q. Do you have many regular customers? A. Most of our business is from repeat customers including several weekly leagues. We have one league that has been with us since we first opened; 45 years ago. We have openings in existing leagues and tee times available for new leagues - my General Manager; Tom is very accomodating. Q. Are you known for anything special? A. We believe we are in the entertainment business competing for our customer’s time and hard earned dollars. We do our best to provide a friendly, laid back atmosphere so golfers of any skill level can have fun and an enjoyable experience. We promote our course as the best golf value in the Capital Region with very reasonable rates. We are also one of the few or only women-owned courses in the area. While we offer golf carts, our course is very walkable.
A. By providing a good product at a fair price. You can play our 9 hole course in less than 2.5 hours for $14 (weekdays and weekends after 1:00 pm). That’s less than $6 per hour. Q. Do you offer any specials? A. Absolutely! Our Free Rewards Club lets you play for free on your birthday, a special member discounted rate for the entire 2016 golf season and the chance to earn a free round of golf after 7 paid rounds. You can enroll on our website: www.frenchshollowgolf.com Also, every Tuesday is Ladies Day - $12 for 9 holes.

Look Outside, It’s Spring! Spring Home Maintenance Tips From Michael VanKleeck, Licensed Real Estate Salesperson, RealtyUSA
deck to check for protruding nails and also to see if everything feels solid – sometimes a simple walk will point up loose supports or areas that need additional bracing. You’ll also want to pay attention to deck rails, looking for loose boards, missing nails, separated joints and support posts that feel wobbly. Finally, check the condition of the deck’s finish and determine if a fresh coat is due this summer.
Spring is here and home maintenance thoughts start turning from inside to outside. Maybe you’re considering getting your home ready to sell and need to check out its “curb appeal, or maybe you’re just getting things ready for the upcoming outdoor season – either way, the following checklist should help your plans to spruce things up and also give you a head start on warding off future maintenance problems.
SIDING Carefully examine the siding to see what winter has wrought. Look at the paint, especially on the main weather-exposure sides of the house. Check the caulking around windows, trim boards and siding penetrations such as lights and faucets. Look for cracked or sagging boards or nails that are working loose.
TREES In the wet and well-treed Northeast, you need to keep an eye on potential problems caused by the trees on your property. As you tour, look for limbs that have cracked or are sagging or trees that may have more of a lean than you remember. Check for overhanging limbs that may be shading the roof and causing mildew problems or that may be deposing leaves or pine needles that can clog gutters and create a fire hazard.
HOUSE NUMBERS While you’re looking at the siding, take a moment to check your house numbers. Are they firmly attached and clearly visible from the street?
FENCES A good place to start is with the perimeter of your property. Winter plays havoc with fences, so check them out carefully. Wiggle the posts to see that they’re still firmly set and look for loose fence boards and loose or rotted stringers. Check also to see if the fence is due for a fresh coat of paint or other finish. FOUNDATION Check the foundation for signs of cracks or other leakage problems. Small cracks can be a source for seepage into the crawl space and you especially want to take notice of larger cracks that may indicate movement in the ground under or around the home. If you’ve noticed water in your basement, keep that in mind as you analyze both the foundation and the surrounding drainage patterns. DRAINAGE While walking the property, be sure and think about drainage around your home as well. Winter storms can cause shifts in local topography that may change drainage patterns, allowing water to move or pool around the foundation or come into contact with your siding. Look for areas of water staining on the concrete or dirt or water stain patterns on siding.
Do they even exist? GUTTERS Bad gutters can cause a variety of moisture problems and also detract from the appearance of your home. Check that gutters are firmly attached and that downspouts are well secured and draining properly away from the house. Check the paint for deterioration, especially around joints where you may find indications of leaks in the seams. ROOFING Let your eyes keep wandering upward and take a critical look at the condition of your roofing – you may even find that a pair of binoculars comes in handy. Check to see if shingles have blown off or worked loose if they’re starting to curl. For asphalt shingles, look at the overall condition of the mineral granules that coat the shingles. Look at the ridge shingles – especially wood ridge – to see if any are cracked or missing. Check the condition of flashings and skylights as well. DOES YOUR PORTFOLIO MATCH YOUR RISK TOLERANCE?
BY DANIEL BAUER
Guilderland, NY - How much risk are you comfortable taking with your investments? This key question in portfolio construction is very difficult to answer, given a world of high volatility in stock returns, constantly-changing economic conditions, and the fact that none of us can say with certainty how any financial asset will perform in the future! Financial experts often break down an investor’s risk tolerance into three categories: need to take risk, ability to take risk, and willingness to take risk. The “need” and “ability” factors are a function of one’s financial situation – for example, a retiree with a multi-million dollar investment portfolio and no need for portfolio income has a very high ability to take risk (his/her life isn’t negatively impacted if the portfolio drops in value by a lot), and a very low need to take risk (earning high returns won’t help his/her situation). In fact, we find that for many investors, the “need” and “ability” factors merely offset one another. As such, we turn to the critical third factor, one’s “willingness” to take risk. Another way to think about willingness to take risk is how various levels of declines in your portfolio impact your ability to sleep at night. Do you shutter with fear if you hear that the market is down 3% today? Or, do you welcome these downward movements, believing that what goes down will soon go back up?
We encourage investors to try to quantify their willingness to take risk by thinking about the maximum portfolio value that they could emotionally tolerate to lose in a down-market. When considering this, try not only to think about your reaction, but how such a drop would impact your financial life, if at all. For example, a 30-year old investor with stable employment may have a difficult time stomaching a 20% loss on her retirement portfolio, however such a loss will likely have little impact on her financial future, as she still has a lot of time prior to needing the money. Once you settle on a maximum tolerable loss, we suggest that you consider an investment portfolio that has at most two times that maximum loss invested in risky assets, such as stocks, real estate, high-yield bonds, commodities, etc. In other words, if you believe you can tolerate a loss of 20%, we recommend that you hold no more than 40% in risky assets. This follows from the notion that you should be prepared for risky assets to drop in value by 50% from time to time. We’ve seen broad stock market indices suffer losses of this approximate magnitude 3 times in the past 40 years (2007-2009, 2000-2002, and 1973-1974), and it will likely happen again. We suggest that the remainder of portfolio assets should be invested in relatively safer alternatives, such as cash equivalents or investment-grade bonds. Please review your portfolio or consult your financial advisor to determine if your current mix of investments aligns with your tolerance for risk.

from the
GUILDERLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY
2228 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 456-2400 • www.guilpl.org
From the Director... As you know, I like to find innovative ways to “think out of the box” when it comes to attracting attention to the Library. Every now and then, it doesn’t work out the way I thought it would. For example … well, read the item below. In this case, I should not have thought “out of the batter’s box.”
Wait ‘til next year! In the midst of last season’s National League Championship Series, Guilderland Public Library director Tim Wiles – a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan – unwisely made a bet with Albany Public Library’s director Scott Jarzombek – a life-long, long-suffering, oft-disappointed Mets fan – as to which of their baseball teams would take top honors in their face-off in the NLCS. The bet was simplicity itself: the loser would shelve books at the winner’s library. They even picked a day when the bet would be “paid off:” Monday, April 4, Opening Day of the 2016 Baseball Season. As events turned out, the Mets took the league pennant (but then lost the World Series to the Kansas City Royals). The sting APL’s Scott felt at the Mets’ defeat in the series was salved no little bit by knowledge that GPL’s Tim was going to spend a day helping shelve books at APL’s Washington Avenue Branch, all thanks to the Cubs’ consistent, 107-year history of not winning a World Series.
Last fall, Tim Wiles (l.) bet Scott Jarzombek (r.) that the Cubs would beat the Mets. They did not. So to settle the bet, Tim shelved books at APL’s Washington Avenue branch on April 4.
While Tim, who’s a fully qualified librarian, is fully conversant with the ins and outs of shelving – “it has to be on the shelf for people to borrow it,” he’s said to his own GPL staff – what he finds particularly galling is the uniform he’s to wear while working. A Mets jersey. And Mets hat. This is anathema to a Cubs fan. “Oh, I don’t think Tim will need much supervision,” observed APL director Jarzombek, “but I WILL be there to watch. And take pictures.” Will they repeat the bet this year? That depends upon each team rising to the top of their respective leagues. And the way things are looking in the pre-season, it’s a safe bet that if you ever want to see a library director shelving books, you’d better get to the Albany Public Library’s Washington Avenue branch on April 4.

Editor’s note: As this edition went to press, we received reports that Tim did reasonably well at APL; though Scott is unsure about making the bet again. Unfortunately, we could not get pictures from “Cub-Fan in the Stacks: The Great Wiles Shelving Expedition of 2016.”

GPL Staffer Captures State-Wide Award Guilderland, NY - A Guilderland Public Library employee who is studying to get her Masters in Library Science at SUNY Albany was recently awarded a NYLA-Dewey Scholarship, sponsored by the Lake Placid Education Foundation and the New York Library Association. This scholarship provides financial assistance to enable an interested and deserving student to pursue an MLS degree e at an ALA-accredited d library school in New w York State. “I was so excited when I heard I’d won,” said Jodyy Shlomo, who is currentlyy a clerk at GPL. “I wentt back to school because I want to be a part of the e ways that libraries change people’s lives, and how public libraries are changing as an institution.” GPL director Tim Wiles was effusive in his praise of Jody’s efforts and role at the library. “In my 25 years in the library profession, I have rarely been as excited about a potential librarian as I am about Jody,” he wrote in his recommendation letter. “She is intelligent, personable, and hardworking in both her work and her studies. She contributes to the library not just as a clerk but also as a member of our staff development committee.

“Jody can be counted upon on an almost daily basis to contribute ideas which enhance the library’s services, presentation, and efficiency. She is a team player, dedicated to making the library a better place. And she clearly loves libraries: I enjoy hearing from her after a vacation trip, as she shares, with excitement, photos of the collections, buildings, signage, and layouts of the libraries she has visited along the way.” While presenting the award to Jody at GPL in early March, Professor Phil Eppard, Chair of the Information Studies Department at SUNY Albany, stated “What set Jody apart was her drive. Cleary she wants to succeed at this, and is committed to the profession.” Daphne Jorgensen, Adjunct Professor of Library Science, SUNY Albany, noted that academic excellence played a key role in selecting Jody for the scholarship. “A 4.0 average will do that.” What does the future hold for Jody? “I would like to create programs that help people address medical issues, safety in their homes, and caring for a partner with dementia. I enjoy helping patrons of all ages learn how to use new audio and visual media and devices so that they can continue to read and listen to books. “Exciting library projects are happening everywhere” Jody explained. “Our public libraries are meeting modern challenges, and I am proud to be a library student and a library professional in this exciting time. The library fills my life.” [Note to Editor: Attached photo associated with this item. No rights issues. Caption:] Jody Shlomo, center, receiving a NYLA-Dewey Scholarship at GPL. FOR ADOPTION ZENA
is a three year old spayed black with some white female Lurcher (Greyhound Mix) approx. 60 lbs. She is up to date on her shots and house trained. Zena would benefit from an owner that would take her places as she loves car rides and to be included in your daily activities. She loves to play and the water. Zena is a high energy dog and needs a home with a fenced yard and no cats. She is very fast and runs like the wind and soars like an eagle. She is a one of a kind beautiful girl. For more information please call Deb Lucas at 518-765-5007.
BARN HOMES NEEDED! Several area cats are about to be without shelter, as the buildings they’ve called home are slated to be torn down by the city. They are “feral,” but human aware, and have been vaccinated and spayed/neutered. If you have or know of a barn or farm willing to take in any of these cats, please contact Laurie at 518-461-0251.
“TANNER”, is a neutered male cat, who was found in a back yard in January looking for food. When we took him in to be neutered, he tested positive for Feline Leukemia, therefore cannot be released back outside with other cats. He needs a home without other cats or with other cats who are Feline Leukemia positive. He is very friendly: likes to be brushed, loves to play w/toys, sat in my lap while sewing at the machine. I pick him up all the time. He had his Rabies Vaccine and Distemper Vaccine. He doesn’t seem to trust the foster dog that is downstairs w/him so wants to atttack the dog (they are separated by a doggie gate and Tanner gets to come out when the foster dog is out for a walk. As soon as he hears us coming, he darts back to his room. If interested in this sweet cat, please call Deb at 518-7655007.
