Guilderland, NY- The full force of midsummer weather has been on us quite a bit of late. Not everybody loves it, but I suspect that most of us can find ways to deal with it more readily than what we were putting up with here in Guilderland about six months ago. With all the hot weather we’ve been having, I think it’s a good time to remind folks to exercise the kinds of precautions that help to keep us safe in this kind of weather. Drink plenty of water. Use sunscreen if you’re going to be exposed to sunlight. Make sure your pets have plenty of fresh water available at all times. If you have friends, neighbors, or family members who are elderly or who have physical limitations, please check in with them periodically to make sure they are all right. Never, ever leave children, animals, or the elderly locked in the car while you’re in the store shopping. If you see a child or a pet locked in a car with the engine turned off in this weather, please don’t hesitate. Call 911. This is an emergency situation that Guilderland’s first responders will take immediate action on. As our residents look for things to do in the warmest part of the summer, I encourage everyone to partake of some of the recreational opportunities that are available right here in Guilderland. Our Town parks offer opportunities ranging from children’s play areas to team sports fields, and from hiking to tennis. Our own Western Turnpike Golf Course always has seasonal specials being offered, in addition to the discounted greens fees that are always available for Guilderland residents. Despite the fire we experienced at the Tawasentha Park pool house in June, we have arranged for temporary facilities and managed to keep the pool open and available to Guilderland residents throughout the summer season.

Construction work continues on the sidewalk installation project on the south side of Western Avenue between Route 155 and the Albany city line. This is the second phase of the project that provides for a network of connected sidewalks along Guilderland’s busiest traffic corridor, providing for major increases in both pedestrian safety and neighborhood connectivity. Your patience with the intermittent lane closures needed to complete this work safely is very much appreciated. Lane closure schedules are updated weekly, and listed for your convenience on the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org. August is generally one of the quietest times of the year in terms of community events, so I will just sign off now with good wishes to all of our residents that the remainder of the summer season is safe and enjoyable for all. AMEDORE SECURES SPECIAL FUNDING FOR LIBRARY REPAIR Guilderland, NY - Senator George A. Amedore, Jr., (R, 46th District) has announced that he has secured $100,000 in this year’s state budget for the Guilderland Public Library to replace its roof, originally installed when the library was built in 1992. “Libraries are the cornerstones of our communities, and we need to make sure theyy have the proper resources they need to continue to provide important services to ourr SERVICE residents,” said TREE Senator Amedore. “Guilderland Public Library is an invaluable asset,, not only to Guilderland, but to many surrounding communities as well. And while theirr programs and services are first-rate, their roof is aging and in need of repair so I’m gladd I was able to help secure these funds in this year’s state budget.” INC.
Owner
Now well over two decades old, the library building is showing its age. Recently thee library has had to make extensive repairs to several mechanical systems, notably thee HVAC system. Recognizing the need to address the problems inherent in an aging physical plant, thee library’s Board of Trustees two years ago started setting aside dedicated repair funds.. The allocation from Senator Amedore will augment monies already devoted to the roof, judged by the Trustees and library administration to be the most pressing repair issue. “We are extremely grateful that Senator Amedore was able to obtain this allocation,” said GPL director Tim Wiles. “The library is a thriving center of information and cultural events, but, as many in our community know, the building itself is aging. This aid, along with going a long way to ensuring this community asset will be safe for decades to come, will also enable us to install a long-lasting and energy-efficient roof.”

Good Dentistry Should Last a Lifetime
Guilderland, NY- Last month we talked about the advantages of a small independent neighborhood dentist‌This month we go further and explain the components of good dentistry and its benefits to the patient. Question: Have you had fillings fall out or crowns fail after a few years? I’ve seen new patients come in with crowns with underlying decay, fractured, even carrying the crown in their hand. Well, that should not happen. With quality dentistry procedures should last. But what constitutes quality dentistry? Quality dentistry begins with the proper education of staff including the dentist taking advanced courses on a regular basis. The foundation of quality dental procedures begins with a comprehensive exam, which includes taking a thorough detailed medical and dental history, including contacting the patient’s physician where necessary. Then the findings are presented and reviewed with the patient. A comprehensive treatment plan is then developed and discussed in detail with the patient. Good dental protocol continues with the dentist spending all the time necessary to insure quality results. That includes having state of the art hi-tech equipment, low dose detailed digital x-rays, powerful microscope with adequate magnification, proper high quality cements and other materials (nothing expired or out of date), using reputable quality labs to fabricate crowns, bridges, etc. Quality dentistry means making sure all decay is removed, and ensuring the patient’s bite is balanced, a critical step. We spend the time to make sure the most attractive color shades are custom mixed for maximum patient satisfaction and cosmetic results - all time consuming details. Educating and spending time with patients is an important component of the process, as well as quality regular cleanings. Crowns, fillings, and other procedures should last more than a few years. Good dentistry, following all important protocols, helps insure that happens. We assure our patients that our commitment to follow the highest standards is our promise to them. SUPPORT OUR LOCAL HEROES By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling
Guilderland, NY - During this past spring break we took a few days to take our kids to Washington D.C. for some classic American history. We typically invite my in-laws along on our li le adventures so why would this trip be any different. My husband’s parents live in Arkansas and like us, don’t mind a li le road trip. We had such an amazing me. I had carefully planned out our trip based on the forecast so that we could make to most of the sights. We visited the museums on the cold or rainy days and the monuments on the nice days. I was surprised how much the kids enjoyed learning about our countries history. I thought for sure they would get bored and want to go back to the hotel pool. We were able to tour the White House, which was interes ng to me. A er the tour I asked my daughter what she thought about seeing the White House. She said “That was the worst thing we did! They didn’t even let us sit in the chairs!” I said I’ll men on that to President Obama next me I see himJ. The highlight of the trip was on Easter Sunday. We walked from Jefferson Memorial, around the Tidal Basin with cherry blossoms beginning to bloom and ended up by the Vietnam Memorial. My father-in-law lost his brother, Arthur, in the Vietnam War. We were able to find Arthur’s name on the wall and needless to say, there was a flood of emo on for us all. We spend the next hour walking back to the train sta on learning about Arthur and his life. It was a memorable day. My staff and I are planning for our upcoming Community Service Apprecia on Day in which we recognize our local heroes: Military, Veterans, Police, Firefighters and First Responders. As part of our event this year, we would like to honor some local heroes by dona ng some Patriot Flights to the Capital District Patriot Flight Organiza on. A Patriot Flight is full day trip, including flight, provided to a war veteran to travel to Washington D.C. and visit the war memorials. It is an amazing experience for them. You can help us do that by spreading the word about our event. Here are the details:

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
2050 Western Ave, Suite 201, Guilderland, NY 12084 (518) 456-6611 • www.guilderlandchamber.com Guilderland, NY - As I was wondering about what to write for this month, I was thinking about summer and everything that Guilderland has to offer. Being a smaller suburban community I feel that places like Guilderland often get passed over as ‘pass through’ community where people see us as the quickest route to get someplace else whether it be a day trip to the city, to a meeting or event in Albany, or to a close day trip get away to the country. I feel that is unfair seeing that we have so many resources, events, and activities going on almost constantly during the year here. From our summer camps, concert series, and all of our parks and trails, there are endless possibilities to keep everyone happy. The Guilderland Town Parks and Rec department works tirelessly to keep things going and to keep quality programming as on ongoing effort. Their website has a lot of information on their website. Since 1991
from GUILDERLAND MARTIAL ARTS 2563 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 690-1269 www.guilderlandmartialarts.com
TWO VERY IMPORTANT LESSONS Guilderland, NY - A while ago my wife, Zeynep as some of you may know her, came home with a movie that was loaned by and recommended by colleagues. Many times we watch movies that have a foundation in science, science fiction or some intrigue. Consider what I do for a living: teach math, entertain children and teach and practice martial arts. To me a great movie night involves Dr. Evil, Ace Ventura, The Matrix and Jackie Chan. I looked at the movie Zeynep handed me and said something like Stewie from Family Guy such as “What the deuce?” I mean, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is a movie that I had never even heard of. I didn’t mean anything bad, I just had never heard of it. Then as I was reading about it, my impression kept getting worse. I was very quiet about it and said we should watch it and see. It is slow and it is dramatic, but it tells the story of such awesome character that I loved it so much. It is full of lessons about life and death and dreams and achievements. It has lessons about cultures and differences and coming together. It flew by and entertained me thoroughly. I don’t remember anything blowing up, I don’t remember any fight scenes and certainly there was no sign of Mini-me, and yet I was locked in; gripped until the end. I wanted to tell you this little story because the lessons I learned are quite important. They are nothing really new, just my way of helping us see it anew. There are two. 1) Do not judge a book by its cover. Give things a try no matter what they look like. I watched an attractive looking martial arts movie the other day that I just could not finish it because it was so bad. The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel didn’t look good on the outside, but was thoroughly fantastic. Follow this rule when meeting new people, reading about other cultures, checking out a new destination or really, in everything we do. Never judge too soon, give everything and everyone a chance. Life is too short to miss out on something, or someone, because we judged too soon. 2) One of the quotes in this movie goes something like: “Everything will be okay in the end. If it is not okay, then it is not yet the end.” It is a very eastern, sort of self-fulfilling, cannever-be-wrong philosophy, but I love it! It is so fantastically
heartening and hopeful. It changed the way I think about so many things for my self and my family and is at the heart of my character teaching paradigm. That night, that movie and that quote changed me and made my life better. By this point I am sure that some of you are realizing that it is a quote by John Lennon. When I saw the movie, I did not know this, but later found out. I am pleased to know he is the source and it shows how people can impact the lives of others, even beyond their lives, and never really know the great things they did. These lessons came to me, courtesy of the wonderful Zeynep. I needed the lessons badly, and they came at just the right time. Was there a disturbance in some sort of force that brought it all together for me to see? Sometimes I like to believe in such things, other times I just like to soak it all in, regardless of from whence or from whom it came. For these lessons I am grateful.

what that means: Sweltering temperatures with no breeze in sight, seemingly endless stretches of 99% humidity followed by random thunderstorms with 1” hail right in the middle of your family barbeque, the AC in your car suddenly stops working the one day you wear a suit to work, etc. Welcome to August my friends! Let’s focus on the posiƟve: it’s usually sunny out (and hey, it’s not winter!) and your appliances are actually working great. BUT, if something stops working, you’ll want to replace it and have the broken one taken out ASAP. That’s where we come in, in this case, literally. Don’t let just anyone take these away for you, here’s why…older air condiƟoners, central air condensers, dehumidifiers, refrigerators, freezers and water fountains/coolers all contain refrigerants (think Freon) like R-12, R-22 and R-500. It is commonly believed that these substances are major contributors towards the depleƟon of the ozone layer and other problems in the environment. Even modern refrigerants like R-134a and R-410a are not the greatest, but they are vast improvements over the older technology.

HOW TO BE HAPPIER Guilderland, NY - Everyone wants to be happy, right? What are you doing to make you and your family as happy as possible? While everyone finds happiness in different ways, there are several surefire ways that pretty much anyone can implement to make their lives happier. Here are a few. 1) Exercise! Not surprising, sure. Exercising helps us relax, boosts brain activity, and makes us feel better about ourselves in general. So not only is exercise making you physically healthier in your bones and muscles, but your brain and emotions see benefits from the physical activity. 2) Get more sleep! Have you ever heard someone say, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead” to avoid admitting they are going through life like an undead zombie? A good night’s rest helps your body restore and recover, and helps you feel wide awake in the morning. Not only that, but sleep deprivation actually leads us to process and remember more negative memories than positive ones. So get some rest and stay positive! 3) Reduce your commute . We all know how this feels. You wake up, everything is going fine. You get into your car and head out for work, to find more traffic than usual - and your day is shot. Even the most even-keeled of us can get frustrated with our daily commute sometimes. If there’s any feasible way to shorten your commute to and from work, your happiness may benefit big time. Many companies are allowing employees to work remotely nowadays, as it often saves employers costly overhead. Ask your boss if working remotely a day or two per week is an option. Or, perhaps try carpooling and help save your mood and the environment! 4) Spend more time with friends and family. Spending time with the ones we care about makes us happier both in the present and the future. Studies in England have even shown that while an increase in income seems to have no effect on life satisfaction, an increase in social involvement counts for a lot. This tip may go hand-in-hand with tip #3 above if you’re able to carpool to work with a good friend regularly! 5) Get outside!! We all know how good it feels to get some outside time into our day – so do it on a regular basis! Walk during your lunch hour, or find a buddy and walk around the neighborhood! This time of year is perfect for hiking swimming and other fun-inthe-sun activities. Studies have shown that just 20 minutes spent outside can do wonders for our mood and overall outlook. Next time time you’re down in the dumps for whatever reason, try tweaking one of the lifestyle variables above to improve your happiness! If you’re interested in more information, visit www.crossfitaevitas.com, email us at info@crossfitaevitas.com or visit us at our facility in Charles Park just off of 155.

message from VAUGHN VISION Carman Plaza, 3770 Carman Rd , Guilderland • (518) 982-0123 www.vaughnvision.com
Computer Vision Syndrome and the Classroom Guilderland, NY - Classrooms around the country are becoming increasingly high-tech, and teachers are incorpora ng 3D imaging, digital devices and the latest computer applica ons into their daily curriculum. While these devices can greatly enhance learning, they also enhance the demands of the visual system and increase the importance of proper eye and vision care. Prolonged use of these technologies can cause eye strain, headaches, fa gue, burning or red eyes, loss of focus, blurred vision, double vision or head and neck pain. This condi on has been called by the American Optometric Associa on, computer vision syndrome (CVS). CVS occurs when eye or vision problems related to near work are experienced during or related to using digital devices. Students can help avoid CVS by prac cing the 20-20-20 rule. At least every 20 minutes, take a 20-second break and view something 20 feet away. Studies show that people need to rest their eyes to keep them moist, and comfortable. Plus, staring off into the distance helps the eyes from locking into a close-up posi on, which causes blur or fluctua on in vision far away. The AOA further recommends that students take a 15-minute break for every two hours spent on computers or other digital devices.
Many of these issues can be further held in check with good ergonomics and yearly, comprehensive eye exams by an optometrist who not only checks nearsightedness and farsightedness but also checks binocular vision, and the focusing abili es of the pa ent. As is true with most things, the earlier a vision problem is detected and treated, the more likely treatment will be successful. It is important to keep in mind, a school vision screening, while helpful, is not a subs tute for a comprehensive eye examina on. Screenings vary in scope and are not designed to detect many visual problems that can significantly impact tasks like reading where more than clarity of vision is needed. This is especially true in today’s increasingly high-tech classrooms, where the use of laptops, tablets and other digital devices are used throughout the day. So as the first day of school is quickly approaching, and most parents are busily making their way through a list of “to-dos”: shopping for school clothes, making appointments for immuniza ons and physicals, and trips to the store for pencils, pens, paper and all the other “must-haves” for the classroom. Is a visit to the optometrist on your list?
Dr. Chad A. Vaughn, Optometrist, completed his undergraduate studies at Holy Cross College and his doctorate studies at The New England College of Optometry in Boston, Massachusetts. He currently is a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa International Optometric honor society. Dr. Vaughn received his extensive clinical experience through externships including work at The New England Eye Institute, Veterans Administration Clinic in Lowell, MA, and Lahey Clinic Medical Center. Dr. Vaughn has also worked with a glaucoma specialist at the Ophthalmic Consultants of Boston. His specialties include family practice, specialty contact lens fittings including bifocal contacts, ocular disease diagnosis and management, laser surgery consultations, and postoperative care. 18

from the
GUILDERLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY 2228 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 456-2400 • www.guilpl.org
It’s been a fun, busy July. But there is so much more coming in August and the fall. Here’s a quick overview …. Get your SporƟng Licenses at GPL On Monday, August 10, GPL will provide a service no other library in the state – and possibly the na on – offers: the sale of spor ng licenses.
The goal was $850, but we surpassed it! This was accomplished with a steady stream of contribu ons of $1 or $5. Thanks to the community’s collec ve generosity, one child is going to discover a world created specifically for them, and meet many other kids sharing the same needs and experiences. MDA campers dream about summer camp all year; some even say it’s changed their lives. Almost all campers agree that it’s “the best week of the year.”
That’s right: Now you can purchase your New York State hun ng and fishing licenses at GPL. Just come to the Circula on Desk, and we’ll be glad to help you.
Thank you, again, for your contribu ons.
One benefit of being able to get your spor ng licenses at GPL is that we’re open un l 9 pm Monday through Thursday, so you can drop in a er work. We’re open 10 am to 5 pm on Saturdays, and in September we’re also open Sundays from 1 pm to 5 pm. One other benefit is that there is always someone at the Circula on Desk to help you. And there’s plenty of close-in parking.
Later this month, you’ll receive your GPL Newsle er, and you may not recognize it at first. Sure, it’s full of the program informa on you’re accustomed to, but the first three pages of it look like … well, a comic book!
Get full details on spor ng licenses by visi ng www.dec.ny.gov. Have you voted yet? Vo ng to select GPL’s Kids Card opened on July 31, and the ballots have been coming in hot and heavy! And me to get your vote in at www.guilpl.org/kidscard grows short.
“The Art of Being Super”
This design highlights a super-amazing-colossal series called “The Art of Being Super,” a quartet of classes celebra ng popular comic culture. GPL is playing host to some of the people who create the latest and greatest in graphic novels and comics. Think Charles Barne III (Captain America, and Star Trek), Todd Dezago (Sensa onal Spiderman), Greg Capullo (Batman), and Mark McKenna (Hulk, and Star Wars). You’ll get full details in the newsle er.
In case you had not heard, we asked youngsters throughout the community to submit designs for a GPL Card to be used exclusively by our youngest customers. We received more than 40 submissions – THANK YOU! -- so selec ng the Finalists and SemiFinalists was a bit of a challenge. But, we narrowed it down to six Finalists; they, like the rest of the field, were all deligh ully crea ve illustra ons of a love of libraries. Everyone can chime in; all you need to do is go to www.guilpl.org/ kidscard and vote! Please vote soon; vo ng closes on Sunday, August 16. We plan to have the cards ready for September’s Library Card Sign-Up Month. Your Generosity is Sending a Kid to Camp Thank you! In what has truly been a community effort, between your contribu ons and those made by GPL’s staff, we have collected enough money to send a child who suffers from Muscular Dystrophy to an MDA camp where he or she can enjoy many of the ac vi es children enjoy, but which, because of their afflic on, they cannot.

FOR ADOPTION Quill is a very gentle, easygoing and active young male cat. He is almost one year old. His owner moved and left him behind. He is currently living in a foster home hoping for a forever home. Quill has medium hair w/ a long plume tail, multiple toes and the biggest feet to match his big heart. His favorite things to do are to cuddle in your lap while having his head rubbed, sleep on your bed, and PLAY, PLAY, PLAY. He loves his toys and loves to play/interact with the other cats in his foster home. He likes to look out the windows and will meet you at the door when you come home. Quill is neutered, up-to-date on his vaccines, and has tested negative for FIV/Felv. The best home for him would be one that has a younger cat for him to play with. If you would like to know more, call Laurie at 461-0251 or brightsky@nycap.rr.com. 24

IS A BAD AGREEMENT BETTER THAN A LOOSEY GOOSEY ONE? Guilderland, NY- With the onslaught of alternatives to litigation, clients often come in with agreements that they have reached through alternative processes, such as mediation. Unfortunately, in New York State mediation is an unlicensed vocation, and anyone can hang up her shingle and call herself a mediator. There are mediators that have training from intense seminars and classes conducted by experienced professionals, with certifications that require ongoing professional education, to online or short term instruction with little or no guidance. Further, someone needs no background in law, finance, accounting, or tax to be a divorce mediator. Sometimes even with a seasoned attorney, there are problems with mediation depending on that person’s particular philosophy. There are mediators who try to bring parties to a reasonable and fair agreement, and those who believe that anything that two people can agree upon is fine, not taking into account the dynamics that one spouse may be a bully or that one person is so desperate to be out of the situation he will agree to any terms. What often brings people to our door are agreements that are incomprehensible, unenforceable, or don’t provide for reasonable changes that may occur in a family as children mature, such as educational expenses. While no one wants a “bad” agreement, that may be better than one which is unclear or unenforceable. Therefore, there are things to look for in reaching an agreement that you negotiate yourself: 1. Be clear about your goals - These include property and debt responsibilities, and custody and support issues including basic support for children, health insurance, medical expenses, child care expenses, extracurricular activity expenses, and educational expenses. 2. Do the right thing - Don’t enter into an agreement with the hope that the other person will “do the right thing,” even if it’s not required in your agreement. Maybe they will, maybe they won’t. If someone has been dishonest with you about money, nickeled and dimed you, or been a bad business partner during the time of your relationship, things are probably not getting better when you are apart. 3. Understand what you are signing – If you have questions about the terms of the agreement and they are not plain on its face that is problematic. Make sure the mediator has brought you to a place that the language in the agreement is clear, concise, and understandable. 4. Don’t sign anything! – The agreement that you are entering into is the most important document you will sign in your life. It is worth the investment for a consultation with a lawyer before finalizing any terms. I cannot tell you the number of people who would have saved a lot of time, energy, and money if they had paid for a few hours of my time to review the agreement, explain it to them, and make appropriate and often necessary changes, rather than fight about it after.
