notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org Guilderland, NY - While our summer weather has been consistently inconsistent, there are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy in your Town parks. Here’s a quick summary of things to do at Tawasentha Park, including checking out the new pool house which was awarded “Best New Construction” by the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce, with private showers and changing rooms, lockers, upgraded concession stand, and a “Little Free Library” provided by the Guilderland Public Library and Altamont Free Library. The park has other new amenities including a new playground, and new restored hiking trails with more than five miles of marked and mapped looping trails, including the beautiful 137 foot long hiking bridge over the Normanskill Creek which links Tawasentha Park to hiking trails in the Winter Recreation Area. Summer months are also the active, if not the only, time in this area for road repair and maintenance. That’s no different in our Town, which unlike many other municipalities, performs this work with its own employees and equipment. It takes very talented Highway Department mechanics to keep this heavily-used equipment in excellent working order and to extend its future usefulness. This maintenance work often involves renovation of used equipment, like the conversion of a halfsized school bus as a backup senior services van and the modification of sidewalk snowplows so that they can tackle large snow piles on sidewalks on Western Avenue. Proper maintenance often requires the rebuilding of engines, the in-house fabrication of steel replacement parts, and other intensive and involved work, including, as shown in the accompanying photo, a complete breakdown of a 10 yard dump truck down to its chassis to allow the replacement of two rusted frame rails with in-house modification of new rails.
roads by authorizing the purchase of a used 1055 Caterpillar paver and a used 10-ton asphalt roller. These acquisitions have allowed the Highway Department to save substantial costs in lieu of paying private contractors and, equally important, to undertake more paving projects and complete them on its own schedule. Here are photos (including an aerial photo taken from a drone operated by Foreman Bob Haver) of the Highway Department’s recent repaving of Hawes Road. This project required employees to carefully monitor the paver’s specialized equipment, check the depth, pitch and consistent quality of the laid asphalt, ensure the prompt and careful rolling of the new asphalt, and coordinate the timely arrival
Peter G. Barber - Town Supervisor to the Guilderland Library, with a crosswalk to Guilderland Elementary School and access to the YMCA. With an accepted design anticipated in the Fall, we expect this sidewalk project to be completed by next Spring. Later this Fall, the Town will seek proposals for engineering services for the new sidewalk on West Old State Road which will link nearby residential neighborhoods with Lynnwood Elementary School and local businesses. This design work should be completed early next year, with construction occurring in the Fall of 2018.
of highway trucks from asphalt plants to keep the paver and roller working at a consistent pace. The end result was the professional re-pavement of 2.6 miles (back and forth) of Hawes Road. Soon after this work was done, mechanics took the paver apart to clean and recalibrate its moving parts to maintain the paver’s performance and long-term usefulness. In the next few weeks, the Highway Department will undertake the paving of five miles of rolling hills of Settles Hill Road. In addition to highway projects, we will soon see progress on other infrastructure projects, including the construction of new sidewalks which will further the Town’s goal of providing safe pedestrian connections among residences, places of interest, and local businesses. Later this month, part of the new sidewalk on Western Avenue which links the Town’s new Senior Center to Town Hall will be installed by a developer with the remainder completed next year.
In the past year, the Town has secured grants in a very competitive process for several sidewalk projects. As required by guidelines involving Federal funding, the Town has issued a request Over the past year, the Town Board has adopted for engineering services for the design of the Highway Superintendent Steven Oliver’s plan new Western Avenue sidewalk which will for the Town to take over paving of its own connect Regency Park and Hamilton Square
The safety improvement project consisting of turning lanes at the intersection of Carman Road and Lydius Street is listed for design work in Federal Fiscal Year 2018-2019 and construction in Federal Fiscal Year 2019-2020. The initial scope of this project also includes crosswalks and sidewalks on both sides of Carman Road. The exact location will not be known until design and projected costs are determined. The Town has worked with NYS DOT on securing the funds for this necessary improvement and will play an active role in determining the scope of the project. As they become available, we will provide details on the scope and timing of the improvements. The Altamont Fair is running from Tuesday, August 15th to Sunday, August 20th. Please take to the time to enjoy the rides, amusements, exhibits and shows at your hometown fair. In the near future, you will be able to access video playbacks of Town, Planning, and Zoning Board meetings on the Town website. These videos will be indexed so that you can quickly play segments of interest and will be available online for five years. Thank you again for taking the time to read these notes and, upon behalf of the Town and its employees, we hope you continue to enjoy the summer season. Peter G. THE INITIAL CONSULTATION by Margaret C. Tabak
Guilderland, NY - Meeting with an attorney for the first time is like a trip to the emergency room- you’ve filled out some paperwork but most of the work is on the spot analysis by the expert. This is generally the most intense time I will ever spend with a client- they are a blank slate with a host of issues for me to determine; decipher and advise. The following are some suggestions to make this meeting as productive as possible: 1) Fees- Most matrimonial attorneys will charge a fee for the initial consultation. Make sure you know what it is up front and what time period it covers. If an attorney offers a free 15 minutes or half hour, find out what the cost is beyond that time. Minimally the attorney should set aside at least an hour for you. 2) Financial- Bring the following that apply: • List of the assets and liabilities that you and your spouse have, individually, together, or with someone else. It is common that someone may own property with a family member or friend, or have taken out a debt due to a business. • Most recent tax return, 2 years if you have it. Include W-2s and 1099s. • Recent paystub for yourself and your spouse. A lot of information is contained on the paystub including costs for insurance, how much is set aside for a retirement account, and if they are paying back any loans from their paycheck. 3) Prior Legal Action- Bring a complete set of applicable legal papers (orders, agreements) 4) Questions- Write down any questions that you have. It is common to be nervous and forget to ask things that you wanted to know. 5) Be honest- Don’t tell me what you think I want to hear, tell me how it really is. My advice may be much different if I know all of the facts.
6) Don’t be embarrassed- After 30 years, I think I have heard everything, but am still surprised from time to time. While I may be caught off guard now and then, my poker face will always be on. 7) Office decorum- How do you feel when you walk into the office? Are they prepared for you? Are you treated courteously? Does the attorney keep you waiting without an explanation? During the few minutes you may be filling out paperwork or waiting for your appointment says a lot. 8) Friend-For many people, another set of ears is helpful. 9) Bedside manner- How do you feel talking to this person? Go with your gut. If you and the attorney don’t mesh, s/he may not want to be who you work with. 10) Where do we go from here- Many people come in for informational purposes and are not ready to take action at that time. Don’t feel pushed into making any decisions at that moment, including signing a retainer agreement. You will get the most “bang for your buck” by being prepared and ready to talk and listen.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR MONEY WENT? BY
DOUGLAS BAUER
Guilderland, NY - One of the key components of personal financial planning is an understanding of where your money goes each day, week, month, and year. Developing a personal cash flow analysis can be a very enlightening exercise, and potentially the starting point on the road to good financial health. There are several ways to begin creating a personal cash flow analysis. The “old-fashioned” way involves manually tracking every dollar and cent which you (and your family) spend on any item – ranging from a bagel and coffee purchase, mortgage/rent payment to your utility bills. Although requiring the most effort, this method often provides the most accurate and useful results.

Dentistry for Total Body Wellness Part 4: Oral Cancer
Today 40% of oral cancers are being found in patients that do not display social or lifestyle risk factors! Guilderland, NY -In less than an hour someone will die from oral cancer. Early detection and management can prevent this. Historically the death rate associated with this cancer is particularly high but not because it is hard to discover or diagnose, but due to cancer being routinely discovered late in its development. We use a light assisted diagnostic Velscope instrument and we also provide saliva testing for exposure to 72 strains of the HPV virus. What would concern us: • Tissue that is a different color than the tissue around the discolored area (white, red, black) • A sore or ulcer that does not heal within fourteen days

What is your phone number and website address? A. You can contact me anytime on my cell phone, at 518-961-5156. You can also reach me on my business Facebook page at “Pristine Mobile Detailing and Pressure Washing”. Here you can view a variety of my work, as well as a more detailed description of the services that I provide. Q. What hours are you open? A. I am available 8am until 10pm, seven days a week!
Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. I became interested in the business of vehicle reconditioning and pressure washing because of my father. He established his own company many years ago and it was exciting to see him become a success doing what he loves. Working with him for the past ten years has allowed me to learn from who I consider to be one of the best in the business. I take great pride in the work I perform. Q. What do you love most about the business? A. I love satisfying my customers and seeing their reactions to my work. It is very rewarding for me. Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. Most importantly, I care about my customers. I want each and every customer to be 100% satisfied with the work I perform for them. Each job, no matter how small or large, is equally important to me. I pay attention to the detail and I believe my work speaks for itself. Just check out the reviews on my Facebook website! In addition, I care about the community at large. In 2015, we tragically lost my sister, Summer Smith to the disease of addiction. Summer also grew up in Guilderland and graduated from GHS. In her honor, my family has established the Summer Smith 5K Addiction Awareness Memorial Run that is held at GHS each May. Our goal is to stop the stigma surrounding addiction and raise funds to help prevent and educate the local community regarding this disease.

TEACHING AND PARENTING ARE SKILLS Guilderland, NY - Many years ago someone said to me: Those that can, do. Those that can’t, teach. I had heard it before and knew the saying, but I did not look it up for years a er. The actual quote is “He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches.” It is a maxim from The RevoluƟonist’s Handbook and Pocket Companion which is an appendix to a 1903 play en tled Man and Superman by George Bernard Shaw. I believe that it came to my ears and into pop culture of the late 70’s because of
“He who can, does. He who cannot, teaches.”
Woody Allen’s use and modifica on of it in Annie Hall. Addi onally, I
George Bernard Shaw
believe the 70’s, being pre y tough mes for public educators, did not help. I know a lot about this maxim because no single idea or saying has been the source of so much anguish and internal conflict for me over the years, and so, by wri ng, I may experience some level of catharsis, and appreciate your pa ence as my readers.
To many people, perhaps even some reading this, this maxim makes sense. You ended up teaching because you could not succeed at applying a skill set to a task to make a career or financial gain. In fact, some look at parents and teachers as babysi ers. I know for sure there are mar al ar sts around that look at me in this way, for I have heard and seen evidence of it. I write this month to tell them all they are wrong and why. First of all, this quote is just a maxim made up by someone as part of an appendix that by its very tle seems designed to s r people up. Secondly, and central to my logical argument, the maxim is based on the premise that teaching is not a skill, but is rather just a thing to do because you failed at your ini al skill. That is like saying “well you couldn’t be successful with your skill so you had kids and started a family.” That’s completely ridiculous and false. This premise is flawed because teaching and paren ng are definitely skills, just like mathema cs, accoun ng, baseball, mar al arts or engineering for example. People don’t see it in the same category because it is a skill that doesn’t produce something that we can buy, ride, fly or type on. Teaching and paren ng are definitely skills, and it ma ers very much for the produc on of the things we buy, ride, fly or type on. Most people cannot make this connec on that would promote teachers and parents higher on the various hierarchies of society. Think about it this way. Many people pay thousands for a brilliant new 4K smart TV to watch some sort of programming that costs millions to create, but when the same person’s school tax rises a hundred or two for the year, they are all up in arms. Likewise a business owner may get s ngy when parents need me off to have a child or par cipate in raising the child. These statements alone indicate how we think, how we consume, and what we value. It is unfortunate because the connec on is always missed: you would never have that nice piece of technology if it weren’t for the parents and teachers that developed the skills and the character of the person that made it. The success of this planet is actually and quite literally dependent on parents and teachers. Teaching is not just a skill, it is a skill that most people cannot master. Understanding how to explain a skill and developing strategies to help people understand it is much harder than just implemen ng the skill. If you really want to try something difficult, try to teach someone how to be a teacher. It is difficult but can be really rewarding. Clearly teaching and paren ng are skills as important as any in our society, so I encourage all to stop looking at it as an ancillary thing next to the other skills and instead group it together with them.

CRANIOSACRAL THERAPY
By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling
used among physical therapists, occupational therapists, massage therapists and chiropractors. A certification is required to become a CranioSacral Therapist. In our office, we have 4 certified therapists including Dr. Boccio, Eileen Hebert, Jenifer Besse and myself.
What Conditions Can CranialSacral Therapy Help? Guilderland, NY - Do you suffer from migraines or headaches? If so, then you are among a large percent of the population. Chronic headaches and migraines can be debilitating, costly and have a major impact on one’s social life. This is one of the most common conditions that we treat at the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center. One of the best methods of treating and managing headaches that we utilize is called CranioSacral Therapy.
What is CranioSacral Therapy? Craniosacral Therapy is a light touch technique that focuses on calming the central nervous system by balancing the fluid that protects your brain and spinal cord. This fluid flows from your brain to your sacrum or tailbone and has pulse similar to your heart rate, but much slower. During the treatment, the patient remains fully clothed while resting on a chiropractic or massage table. The therapist holds certain places around the head, neck and sacrum while using a gentle pressure to balance the fluid flow and relieve cranial pressure. To the patient, it may not feel like much is happening but to the hands of the trained therapist, it is like discovering a symphony of movement.
Who can perform CranialSacral Therapy? CranioSacral Therapy was pioneered by Dr. John Upledger, a professor of Biomechanics at the College of Osteopathic Medicine at Michigan State in the early 1980’s. Today, it is a commonly used technique

If you have been living with chronic pain and feel that you have tried every available therapy or your current treatment is giving minimal results, consider CranioSacral Therapy. It is a great technique for anyone, especially individuals who may not feel comfortable with chiropractic care or with massage therapy. It is very relaxing and calming to the nervous system. As always, if you have question about this article or a health condition feel free to call the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center for a free consultation at 518-869-3415. Please visit our website for more information at www.sportsandspinalwellness.com. We would be happy to be a part of your health care team.

DIY TIPS TO GET YOUR HOME READY TO SELL If you’re looking to put your home on the market, make sure it’s ready to sell. Host of HGTV’s “Rehab Addict”, Nicole Curtis, gives four inexpensive insider tricks to help market your home and get the best price.
Also store away memorabilia collections, personal keepsakes and tone down any themed bedrooms, which can be distracting if they are not the potential buyer’s taste. “Themed bedrooms are not a good selling point,” Curtis says.
SELLING SECRET #1 – THE FIRST IMPRESSION IS THE ONLY IMPRESSION In today’s digital age, people are checking out your home online before even driving by. Maximize your digital presence by asking your realtor to post as many photos as the listing website will allow, and adding photos of decorative accents throughout the home, such as flowers or updated hardware. With your home’s exterior being the first photo potential buyers will see, take an afternoon to spruce it up before snapping photos. Add vibrant flowers, inexpensive shrubs and get that lawn freshly mowed. “Twenty dollars of fresh flowers makes a huge difference,” Curtis says.
SELLING SECRET #3 – THE KITCHEN COMES FIRST Kitchens will make or break a sale, so consider updating yours before putting the home on the market. Curtis says that with Kitchen upgrades, you will most likely get 85 percent of your money back, and renovations eliminate a buyer’s negotiating points (they may ask you to knock $10,000 off the price because the Kitchen needs updating). To make the Kitchen look fresh without draining the bank account, consider adding a fresh coat of neutral colored paint and new hardware to dated cabinets. If you do have a little bit of cash to spend in this area, Curtis recommends adding at least one stainless steel appliance to give the kitchen a high-end look.
SELLING SECRET #2 – TAKE THE HOME OUT OF YOUR HOUSE Those photo frames lined up in your living room featuring your family’s smiling faces? Take some of them down. “You want people to focus on your home, not your pictures,” Curtis says. “If you have family photos up, they will stare at your photos all day long and not pay attention to anything else.”
SELLING SECRET #4 – HALF EMPTY THE CLOSETS Storage sells, but packed closets make it look like your home doesn’t have much room for a buyers’ things. Showcase your closets by taking half of your belongings out of the closets, then neatly organizing what remains. Another nice touch is to swap out cheap plastic hangers for wood ones, as they give a high-end look to closets. “The key to selling your home is about 32 Rubbermaid containers,” Curtis says. “The time to pack is before you list your home.” For information on this article, or if you have any real estate questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me today.
