notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org
T
he seasons are changing, the holiday season is approaching, and all of us have all sorts of things on our minds. It’s easy to become distracted, which is why I want to start this month with a request for everyone to try to put a little extra emphasis on safety as you drive or walk around Guilderland. It’s a really good way to keep this time of year special for all of our residents. The holiday season is full of special events of all types, throughout the region in general, and in Guilderland in particular. There are too many to mention here, but notices about a number of them can be found on the Guilderland website, www.townofguilderland.org, while notices about others can be found in various local media outlets, including Our Towne. As you plan your holiday season, I would suggest that you make yourselves aware of the events taking place right here in Guilderland, and to partake of them as your schedule allows. The holiday season is also a time to think of others. We have seen improvement in the economy at the national, state, and regional levels in the past year, but we are still in an economic climate where the holiday season is not as bright for some as it is for others. Guilderland has shown itself time and time again over the years to be a caring community, one that abounds with opportunities to share some measure of seasonal joy with others. I encourage you to be aware of these opportunities for sharing, and to participate in whatever manner is appropriate for your own individual situation. One of the places where some of you may find appropriate gift ideas for the holiday season is Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course. Course memberships for 2014 are now available, and for those who register and pay the membership fee by December 31, 2013, an “early-bird” rate special is being offered. This rate represents a discount of nearly 20% off standard membership rates, and is a wonderful gift for anyone who plays golf on a regular basis. Please go to the Western Turnpike page on the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org, for more information and a downloadable application form. You should also remember that Guilderland’s parks offer recreational opportunities year-round, not just in the warmer weather. The trail system in Tawasentha Park is available for hiking on dry terrain, and for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing (ungroomed trails) when there’s snow on the ground. When the weather is cooperative, we will offer cross-country skiing on groomed trails at Western Turnpike Golf Course. Please contact our Parks and Recreation Office at 456-3150 for current information on available activities. The gradual improvement of the national and regional economy, combined with the careful financial management practices we have long had in place at the Town, have helped Guilderland to maintain its status as a fiscally sound and secure community. I am pleased to report that the Town Board approved a balanced 2014 budget at its November 7 meeting, and that the 2014 budget includes a 4% decrease in the Town’s general tax rate. Guilderland is a community that is home to people from many different places and many different traditions. However you celebrate the holiday season in your household, I would like to take this opportunity to express to you, on behalf of all of the Town’s elected officials and employees, my sincere wishes to all of Guilderland’s families for a safe and enjoyable holiday season, as well as for a 2014 New Year that will offer health and happiness to all. Ken Runion, Supervisor

hanges have been happening all over the business community in Guilderland the last month and I am excited to say that I get to now serve our members as Interim President at the Chamber. The last four years have certainly been fun, challenging, and full of change, and I want our members to know I will continue to be committed to make the chamber work for them and their business.
Janicee M M.. Delehan Delehanty, nty ty, D D.D.S. Quality ~ Care ~ Service
I also want to introduce our new Member Associate Kevin Box. Kevin has extensive experience in marketing and customer service. Welcome Kevin! Even though there has been change, it does not mean things have slowed down! We have members celebrating milestone years including the Albany Pine Bush Preserve Commission at 25 years, Schenectady Physical Therapy Associates on Carman Rd. at 20 years and Buffalo Hotel Supply at 70 years. The last month has also marked some grand openings for Peelz on Wheelz on Western Ave., along with Tractor Supply, and Crate and Barrel who has a temporary location at Crossgates Mall for the Holiday Season. Make sure to stop in to see what each place has to offer, and I would like to encourage you all to take the challenge to SHOP LOCAL this year. Shopping local is key to a healthy economy. So before you search the internet for good deals, ask yourself if this is something you can get right here in Guilderland? Our Holiday Angel Adopt a Family Program is also in Full Swing. This program benefits families in the Guilderland School district who are in need or have fallen on hard times. This year especially we seem to have an abundance of families asking for warm clothes and shoes. To purchase a gift stop by the chamber to pick up an angel, or call us at 456-6611. Wrapped, labeled, gifts or gift cards can be dropped off to the chamber up until Tuesday December 17th. And don’t forget our Annual Holiday Party at Dave and Busters in Crossgates Mall on Wednesday December 4th! It is open to anyone, business or not, cost is $10 with game cards given to the first 100 paid people.

KEEPING YOUR BACK SAFE THIS SEASON By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling
I
t seems every season has reasons that bring people walking into chiropractic offices with back pain. In the spring and summer, it is usually gardening and landscaping projects and in the fall, it is all the raking and bagging leaves. It never fails that after Thanksgiving, we always have patients who injury their backs and necks putting up lights, decorations and shoveling snow. So here are some tips to prevent injuries this holiday season and basic back care should you become injured.
ice for 15 minutes every 2 hours. NEVER apply heat on an acute injury. Most patients who injure their backs come into the office and say “I slept on a heating pad all night and the pain was worse the next day. Heat will make the swelling worse and cause more pain. Compress the area with a low back brace or use kinesio tape to help reduce swelling. If pain persists it is always best to follow up with your chiropractor. If you do not have a chiropractor, we would be happy to help you. Chiropractic care consists of various techniques and modalities to facilitate the healing process. Some of the procedures that we use in our office are traction, myofascial release, cold laser, Arthrostim adjusting, manual joint mobilization, electric muscle stimulation, heat and cold therapies, taping and rehabilitation.
Take your time and take breaks. Putting up holiday decorations and shoveling snow can take some time. Most people are not used to bending, reaching, twisting and lifting for a few hours straight. Your back muscle will fatigue quickly and when they do, it puts more stress on the joints, ligaments and discs. The result could be an acute back/neck strain or disc injury. So take your time and take breaks to admire your As always, you can call the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center for work. a free consultation at 518-869-3415. If you do injure your back, follow the RICE principle. This is most often used to treat sports injuries, but the same applies to your back. Rest by sitting in a supported chair or lay down on your back on the floor with your knees bent. Get up and move frequently. One of the worst things you can do is lay in bed all day. Apply

Does Your Website Work for your Business? By Levi Steier When small businesses are setting up or redesigning their web presence they often focus on the wrong things. They place a high priority on latest and greatest components without giving much thought to business critical aspects of their web presence like search engine optimization, measurable outcomes, or return on investment (ROI). Unfortunately, this is sometimes encouraged by the designer for various reasons that may include inflated project cost or unchecked creative license.
4. Your website should evolve and grow with your business Markets and ideal customers change. The same should be true for your website. This means that analysis of relevant data is important and should be used to improve site design and effectiveness. Keep in mind that what currently works might be ineffective next quarter. Just like most other aspects of your business you should be capable of adapting to changes in your business environment. Levi Steier wants to help you establish a brand in your area of expertise and help you become more visible and interesting to your ideal customers, clients, or audience. This includes, but is not limited to, website design and maintenance, search engine optimization (SEO), conversion rate optimization (CRO), Internet marketing, social media integration, and consulting on various business related technologies.
The problem is that while a web design should be up to date and attractive, the primary focus should be on factors relevant to business strategy. Can your potential clients or customers find your site, navigate it successfully, and respond easily to your call to action? If flashy components help your business improve ROI and conversion rates then certainly use them. If they do not, then consider their use carefully and be sure to assess their value. Sometimes less is TekCeptional.com | Levi.Steier@ more. TekCeptional.com | 518.203.3497 In order to help ensure your web presence is working for your business, consider the following as you set out to begin your next web design project.
NEW WESTERN AVENUE LOCATION!
1. It’s a team effort Trust is integral to any design project. Take the time to fully discuss your project with your designer. During the initial stages, your designer should be working with you to get an understanding of your business and how your website can help your business reach its goals. If this isn’t part of the process, you might want to consider a new designer.
TCH E MATEE! C I R P AN GUAR
2. Content is king Your content is a critical aspect of your web design. Always keep in mind that people go to websites in order to accomplish specific tasks related to your business. In most cases they want to learn something about the goods or services you provide or get information on how to solve a problem. Your website should do this efficiently and effectively. 3. Designs always go out of style Avoid putting too much emphasis on current design trends. It will drive you crazy and will often lead to many, many revisions to your website. Instead, focus on working with your designer to come up with a design that matches your style and is representative of your business. Focus on making sure your web presence is attractive and extremely useful to your visitors.

Year-End Tax Strategies
E
arlier this year, we discussed the importance of making income tax planning a year-round activity. This month, we offer reminders of some strategies that have year-end deadlines as it relates to the 2013 personal income tax year. •

Generosity
N
ow that we have completed the season of thanks, we move on to the season of selflessness and generosity. Many different people celebrate this time of year in many different ways. Even people who celebrate the same holiday celebrate it in different ways and for different reasons. The most important thing is to use this opportunity to be selfless and kind to others. Since I have moved to this area, I have been so fortunate to have surrounded myself with the most generous people I have ever met. The kinds of things that I see people do for others is astounding. I am in awe and quite humbled by the level of generosity of some people I know. I am so lucky to be in the company of such selfless people.

At Guilderland Martial Arts we adopt a family for Christmas presents and I am always so impressed by the level of selflessness demonstrated by our students and families. It is just one small way we try to give to the community we live in, but it is significant because it has an impact on the lives of people. The universe is vast, and at times we feel insignificant, but if an act affects the life of a person it is, I assure you quite significant. Do whatever you can this year to help someone else have a better life. What you do may be the turning point for them. Be kind to others and spread the good cheer, as they say. Helping a deserving person improve their life when they are down is the best present for them and for yourself. I cannot say why I know it, but somehow I know that the true meaning of life is to help others and to leave your mark in them to make them better. This all starts of course with our own children; our most important contribution. Make them great and we are successful. After we ensure the happiness and success of those closest to us, then we turn our efforts out to other deserving people. I am not always in the best mood for living up to my own expectations, but I do try. Writing these things helps to refocus my energy back to the path of selflessness and kindness that those around me deserve. Happy Holidays and Happy New Year and may 2014 be the best year ever for all of us.

At the Library Just in Time for the Holidays: Gluten/Allergen-Free Baking for Busy People Just in time for the holidays, when so many people are so careful about what they eat and serve to their guests, comes “Gluten/Allergen-Free Baking for Busy People,” on Saturday, December 14, at 2 pm. Cookbook author and food blogger Colette Martin had to re-invent the way her family ate because her son developed multiple food allergies. That included finding other ways to make baked goods, a mainstay in so many kitchen repertoires. The result: great recipes that she gathered in her book, Learning to Bake Allergen-Free: A Crash Course for Busy Parents on Baking without Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Soy or Nuts (Workman, 2012). As part of our continuing series, Tastes Good/Get Healthy @ the Guilderland Library, Colette will be here to share her strategies for baking allergen- and gluten-free, and she’ll demonstrate some wonderful holiday baking methods. Copies of her book will be available to purchase, and there will be samples to try, as well!

Pageant of Winter Carols Returns for 39th Season Old Songs’ annual presentation of Nowell Sing We Clear: A Pageant of Mid-Winter Carols will be presented on Saturday, December 14 at 3:00 pm at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 140 Maple Ave. in Altamont, NY. Tickets for the concert are $20 for adults and $5 for children ages 12 and under and may be purchased online at nowell.ticketderby.com or by calling Old Songs at (518) 765-2815. This will be the 39th touring season of Nowell Sing We Clear with its unusual songs, carols, stories and customs. Drawn mostly from English language folk traditions from both sides of the Atlantic, the songs tell both a version of the events and characters involved in the Christmas story and detail the customs that make up the twelve magical days following the return of the light at the Winter Solstice. Many of these ancient customs are the basis of today’s holiday traditions. A special and unusual treat is the enactment of a Mummer’s play from Kentucky, a madcap tale of death and rebirth done in street theater style and featuring characters such as Pickled Herring, Father Christmas and a hobby horse-riding doctor of questionable expertise.
While much of the singing is done in unaccompanied style, the pageant is also stamped with the energetic dance band sound of fiddle, button accordion, electric piano, drums and concertina. The audience, supplied with song sheets, is encouraged to sing along on many of the carols and, indeed, this annual performance for Old Songs is especially noted for the robust participation of its audience. Performers are John Roberts and Tony Barrand, widely known for their lively presentations of English folk songs, and Fred Breunig and Andy Davis, well known in New England as dance callers and musicians.

Seasons Greetings from the Schoolcraft House We would first like to thank all those who made our fundraising campaign such a success by donating the money needed to buy paint so the town can begin the process of completing painting the house…this coming spring. We want to also thank Robinson’s Ace Hardware for their help in making the house painting a reality. The Friends of the Schoolcraft House would like to invite you to a Holiday celebration. Please join us on Sunday, December 15th between 2:00 and 5:00 PM for a Holiday Open House and refreshments. If you have been curious about what is going on in the big brown house on the corner of Schoolcraft Street and Western Avenue and would like a glimpse of the restoration taking place in the Early Gothic treasure, stop by and see, first hand, its history and its future. Learn what a wonderful community asset it will become. We hope to see you there. All of us at the Schoolcraft House wish you a Happy Holiday Season. Friends of the Schoolcraft Cultural Center

LOCAL REAL ESTATE EXPERT OFFERS TO SELL YOUR HOME FOR FREE!
I
t is hard to believe the holiday season is upon us and 2013 is almost in the books. I hope you had a fantastic Thanksgiving and are looking forward to sharing the upcoming holidays with family and friends. Despite all the media hype on how bad the real estate market is, homes are still be bought and sold in the Capital Region. As I look back on the 150+- homes sales I will be involved with by year end 2013, I realized how blessed we have been. 2013 has turned out to be our best year ever, and I just wanted to take a moment to say Thank You Guilderland. However, as I reviewed our completed transactions during the past year one thing struck me. Many, many, many of our clients that we sold homes for sold because they had to, not because they wanted to. Often the reasons included divorce, job loss, illness, or job relocation. These were clients that would have kept their homes if possible but had to sell due to circumstances beyond their control. In retrospect, I realized we often benefited from the misfortune of others that felt the pain of the economy in 2013, which is not the reason we are in business. So here is my proposal. If you find yourself in a situation where you are selling a home, because you have to, not because you want to, call us. We will sell the home of one person (randomly chosen if we receive more than one request by 1/30/14) for free. That’s right absolutely no charge! Here is the fine print, we must legitimately determine, at our sole discretion that you are selling due to a situation beyond your control such as job loss, illness,
etc. If we determine this to be the case, we will sell your home for free! This is not a gimmick where we dump you in the Multiple Listing Service and forget about you. You will receive the exact same 89 point marketing plan that our paying clients receive including our proprietary Internet system, professional photography, and home staging that has made us one of the top residential real estate firms in the Capital Region. It is simply our way of saying thank you and doing the right thing in a tough economy, during a season that is focused on giving. So if you have to sell your home call us at 1-800-4487016 Ext 5555 for a confidential 24 hour recorded description of what you need to do. Have an absolutely fabulous Holiday Season!

Today I have several employees, 4 trucks and 6000 square feet of warehouse recycling opera ons. In early 2013 we passed the one million pound mark in recycled scrap metal (600,000+ total pounds this year alone) and our newly expanded junk removal and clean out services have quadrupled in size and are growing every day. A compe tor once asked was I “…s ll going down into basements?” The answer is and always will be: YES! “Don’t Worry, We Can Take It!” isn’t just our company slogan, it is the back bone of what we do. Large or small, easy or difficult…we go where others won’t, to take out the things they can’t, any me we have to, to get the job done right… safely, correctly and on me.
