Charting Your Course by Douglas Bauer Guilderland, NY - Chinese philosopher Laozi noted that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Well-seasoned travelers will hasten to add that having the final destination and route in mind also contribute to a journey’s success. Individuals and couples would be well-advised to take the first step on their financial journey - enter the Financial Plan! A financial plan in its most basic form typically tries to answer the question, “Can I retire?” More specifically, a plan will try to project what level of income can be available at a given retirement age, based on several assumptions such as savings rate, investment returns, inflation, etc. However, a financial plan can and should go well beyond retirement planning to address several important questions, such as: •

Are we paying unnecessary income taxes or capital gains taxes?

How will I pay for the costs associated with higher learning?

How should our investment portfolio be designed to best align with our goals and objectives?

What do we want to happen to our assets if we pass away, and what’s the best way to accomplish this?

How can I best gift assets to charitable organizations that are important to me?

Should we be concerned about estate taxes even though we’re not worth millions of dollars?

Am I taking full advantage of any benefits available from my employer?

Are we properly using debt to leverage our personal balance sheet?

Are there any opportunities to reduce our fixed expenses?

Do we have proper insurance coverage in place to protect our lives, health, income, assets, etc.?

A well-designed financial plan will address each of the above issues, and provide an action plan for any adjustments that should be made to your current situation. A comprehensive financial planner will not only prescribe solutions, but will also work with you to implement any required courses of action. Being well-informed is not sufficient – e.g. knowing that diet and exercise are the keys to physical health is not enough without actually eating healthy and starting an exercise regimen. Likewise, knowing the proper financial steps to take is not enough without actually making positive changes! Our experience has shown us that many individuals and couples can benefit from a second opinion on their financial health. Seeking advice from a qualified financial planner can help expose any areas that should be addressed in order to best guide you on your financial journey.

YOUR MOTHER-IN-LAW IS COMING!!!

Deciding on New Decisions in December and the New Year Guilderland, NY - The holidays and 2020 are right around the corner as well as deciding what your New Year’s Resolution’s will be. You may be thinking that it is going to be the year to shed those stingy 10 pounds, by eating healthy and joining a gym, or you are going to finally donate or throw out the items in your house that never get used. You may also be thinking that I will stay on top of my dental checkups and cleanings. Dental checkups and cleanings are important so that minor issues do not end of becoming major ones. So, as the year flies by and we reflect on what New Year’s Resolutions we fulfilled or did not get to, let 2020 be the year of fulfillment no matter what! Set reasonable goals, with maybe a challenge or two about how we can better ourselves for the new year. As 2020 nears, I reflect about all of the decisions I have made this year and review the goals I set for myself in 2019 to continue to better myself as a dentist. I set a goal to attend and graduate from the University of North Carolina’s Residency Program for Dental Sleep Medicine, which I successfully accomplished. This program enabled me to help my patients in my own dental practice that have a sleep breathing disorder by creating an oral sleep appliance to open their airway, and help them to get a healthy, restful night’s sleep. By furthering my education in Dental Sleep medicine, I know I am adding years onto my patients’ lives since there is a correlation between a sleep breathing disorder and many other systemic diseases, including heart disease. I also set out to help my patients that would like to straighten their teeth and smile without hesitation, by offering my Invisalign and Advanced Whitening Services. I’m always keeping up to date with the new techniques, technology and beneficial ways I can be the best at my dentistry by attending monthly dental conferences and webinars, so I can keep my patients well informed about their health and dental Refer a friend or wellness. I have an amazing, friendly dental family member to Oshins team to support my visions and educate our of Smiles and be entered in patients which makes my practice stand a raffle to win a Free Sonicare out as having exceptional qualities. I’m Toothbrush. thinking about my new goals and decisions Mention code: 2020 for December and the New Year and staying dedicated to the overall health and wellness of all of my dental patients. I cannot wait to share these with you in December and the year 2020. I thank you for continuing to read my monthly articles and spreading the word to your family and friends about my practice and all that I do. I wish for all of you to have an amazing and safe Holiday Season and a very Happy New Year! With Oshins of Smiles, Dr. Steven Oshins DDS

When Holidays are Hard Tips for coping with a food-centric season

D

FAMILY FEATURES

uring the holidays, no matter where you turn, you find food, food and more food. From vendor treats filling the office breakroom to celebratory dinners with family and friends, virtually everything and everyone seems to be focused on food. For someone working to overcome an eating disorder, it makes the season anything but festive. Eating disorders affect 20 million females and 10 million males in the United States and can be diagnosed in boys and girls 7 years old and sometimes even younger. Eating disorders are not a lifestyle choice; they are mental health disorders similar to depression, bipolar disease or schizophrenia. It is not an individual choice to develop an eating disorder, but rather severe underlying pathological factors which drive individuals to take part in self-destructive behaviors associated with eating disorders. Genetic, environmental and social factors all play a role in the development of an eating disorder. Interpersonal issues, past trauma, low selfesteem, abuse, co-occurring mental health disorders, substance abuse disorders and unhealthy family and personal relationships can all contribute to the environmental and social factors associated with eating disorders. Even for someone who is well into a successful recovery program, the holidays can trigger unwanted thoughts and comments surrounding food. Whether you are actively treating your eating disorder or suspect you may have one, you can take steps to make this holiday season more comfortable with these tips from eating disorder expert and licensed therapist Dawn Delgado, director of clinical development at Center for Discovery.

1. Always have a safe plan. If you plan on attending a holiday party or gathering, you may want to consult with your dietitian to have a plan beforehand, especially if you feel you may be inclined to binge. If you feel triggered to binge, or if you feel pressured by another individual, create an escape plan, which may mean having a friend accompany you to the party or even come pick you up. Your plan may also involve finding a safe place at the party where you can be alone to gather your thoughts until you feel comfortable re-engaging with others. 2. Be prepared to say “no.” Many individuals, with good intentions, will push food your way. They will want you to try their favorite dessert or their new recipe without understanding your struggle. Know that it is OK to say “no” and to take care of yourself in these situations. You can choose to clarify why you are saying “no,” but do not feel obligated to do so. Also give yourself permission to decline joining holiday office parties, family parties or other holiday-themed get-togethers if your recovery could be compromised, or plan to bring a supportive friend. 3. Know your triggers before you engage in social situations. Understanding your triggers and learning how to use coping skills to control them at holiday functions can help keep negative thoughts and self-sabotaging at bay. If there are certain topics of conversation that trigger you then avoid those topics or change the conversation when those topics arise. Be honest with yourself, be honest with others, recognize your emotions and learn to take control of your scenarios. Learn more and find options for treatment at centerfordiscovery.com.

Supporting a Loved One

Watching someone you care for battle an eating disorder can be emotionally challenging, but your love and support can make a big difference during the stressful holiday season with these tips from the experts at Center for Discovery: n If you’re uncertain how you can help, just ask then be prepared to listen without judgment. n Make it clear you are willing to be a sounding board or assist your loved one in getting to a safe place if he or she is triggered during an event. n Voice concerns privately. Public comments about weight, body shape or food choices can only exacerbate the angst your loved one is feeling, and when you put him or her on the defensive, he or she is less likely to be receptive to your genuine concern.

Mindful Eating Tips

These simple steps can help you rediscover your natural intuition about food and hunger. These tips can be used all in one meal or you can choose one tip at a time to focus on. When you feel you have mastered one, try a new one. Over time, eating mindfully can become second nature. 1. Practice mindfulness: Start by eating one meal a day in a slower, more aware manner. 2. Hunger check: Before eating, check in with yourself to determine how hungry you are. Are you hungry enough for a meal or just a snack? 3. Emotional check: What are you feeling? Are you happy, content, stressed, bored or something different? 4. Senses check: What type of food are you hungry for? Do you want savory, sweet or salty? Do you want something hot or cold? 5. Time check: Do you have time to sit and savor? Or are you crunched for time? 6. Time crunch: Planning to nourish your body is an act of mindfulness. Taking the time to grab some food or packing food to eat on the go is being mindful that your body needs fuel. 7. Focus: Concentrate on the meal in front of you. Avoid doing other activities while you eat such as working, talking on the phone, watching TV, driving or reading. 8. Savor: While eating, notice the colors, smells, flavors and textures of the food. 9. Food awareness: Notice your reaction to the food you are eating. What do you like, what don’t you like? If you are enjoying your food, savor it. If you don’t like your food, choose something more appealing. 10. Patience and grace: Mindful eating is a practice that takes time to learn and develop. Since there is no judgment in mindful eating, give yourself grace and patience as you learn.

ANNUAL HOLIDAY MESSAGE by Margaret C. Tabak

Here is my annual holiday article. While repetitive from past years, since I see the same problems year after year, these are words of wisdom that never go out of style.

HOW TO HAVE HAPPY HOLIDAYS- APART Guilderland, NY - Whether you and your child’s parent have been apart for a month or 10 years, there are issues that continually rear their ugly heads, fighting over time, presents, Santa, etc. To help you manage and thrive for the holidays: 1. Plan Ahead- December 23rd is not the time to start planning Christmas. If you do not have a schedule in place, start talking about it now. If you cannot engage in a civil conversation (and I mean, actually talk), seek the help of a third party or polite, to the point, electronic communication. 2. What really matters to you? – Does your family have a big Christmas Eve celebration? If the other parent is more of a Christmas Day person, shouldn’t this be easy to work out? If you both like the same time, alternate (odd/ even years). This way, you are only unhappy half of the time, and can figure out new traditions when you have your less preferred time. 3. “Yes, Virginia, [is] there a Santa Claus"? To paraphrase the iconic New York Sun article, is it the holy grail to see your child open up presents first thing Christmas morning? If they are 13, probably not, 3, maybe. If that is the case, can you actually share an hour as a family (how long does it actually take to rip open presents?) to be with your child during those precious years?

4. Church- I use to be able to resolve holiday disputes by when families attended church. Then people stopped attending church but were embarrassed. Now many people do not attend church and are not embarrassed, so I’ve lost my leverage, but why not celebrate a religious holiday by attending a religious service? It may teach your child why you are going through all of this hoopla, and it is lovely way to share the holiday. And- a family can attend together, even if there are new significant others (open to all!) 5.

Volunteer- What better way to mark “good will to all [wo]men?

6. “Bad Talk”- Do not spend your holiday time bad mouthing the other parent or letting your friends or family do it? Your child deserves happy memories, not ones clouded by bickering and gossip. 7. Presents- Despite our consumer driven culture, less can still be more. What about investing in an activity or weekend away rather than competing for how much cardboard you can use? If you are behind on support, make yourself current. Feeding your child is an obligation, gifts are an extra. 8. Think about your child- We only have one chance in our lifetime to raise our children. The gifts of temperance, forgiveness, mercy, and kindness are priceless and enduring.

Best wishes for all the best in the New Year!

A FEW OF MY FAVORITE THINGS By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling

Looking for a few last-minute gift ideas for the holidays? Here is a quick list of a few of my favorite useful products for taking care of your body. 1. Gift Certificates to your favorite chiropractor and massage therapist should be #1 on the list! 2. Foam Rollers – these come in all shapes, colors, densities and sizes. They are used to release muscle and fascial tightness for pre and post exercise. Also useful for chronic pain reduction. 3. Stretch Out Straps – this is a stretching tool that helps to make stretching a little easier by aiding to lift arms and legs. It usually comes with a booklet to show various stretches and exercises. 4. Theracane – this handy little gadget is great for those who don’t have someone at home to rub their shoulders for them. It is basically a hook that you can use to apply pressure into trigger points and knots in your back, especially those hard to reach areas. 5. Paraffin Hand Bath – a great gift for anyone with hand arthritis or those who work with their hands daily. It is a small crock pot filled with melted wax. Dip your hand in 3-5 times to form a warm coat of wax around your hand. Wrap the hand in a towel for 10 minutes. AHHH! Feels so good. When you are done, peel the wax off and toss it back into the pot to reuse. 6. Cryoderm or Biofreeze – these are great muscle balms used to alleviate sore and achy muscles. 7. Home back massagers – these come in all varieties. Stores such as Brookstone, Bed Bath and Beyond, and Kohls carry many types based on your needs. 8. Weighted Blankets – these are great for those who have a hard time with sleep. Like a thunder jacket for your pet, it can calm and soothe the nervous system by the gentle hug you feel on your body while sleeping. 9. Good quality ice and hot packs – my favorite brand is by Core Products Dual Comfort. These can be used for both hot and cold and has a soft cover so can be applied directly to the skin when cold. We always recommend using a thin towel as a skin barrier when using as a hot pack. They come in various shapes and sizes. There you have it ….a few of my favorite things…for the holidays. If you have question about any of these products, please feel free to call and ask questions at 518-869-3415 or email me directly at contactus@sportsandspinalwellnesscenter.com. Have a Blessed Holiday and Happy New Year!

Festive Popcorn Trees

Yield: 10 trees 10 cups air-popped popcorn 1 bag (10 ounces) miniature marshmallows 2 tablespoons butter 1 teaspoon vanilla extract nonstick cooking spray green decorating sugar blue decorating sugar 1 tube white frosting small, colorful candies such as sprinkles and miniature silver dragees Place popcorn in large bowl. In medium saucepan over medium-low heat, stir marshmallows and butter until marshmallows are melted and mixture is smooth. Remove from heat. Stir in vanilla extract. Pour mixture over popcorn in bowl. Toss well to coat popcorn evenly. Line baking sheet with foil. Spray hands with nonstick cooking spray then scoop about 1 cup popcorn mixture. Shape mixture into cone, keeping base flat to form tree. Sprinkle tree with decorating sugars; place tree on baking sheet. Make nine additional trees. Using decorating tip, pipe frosting on trees to make garland then decorate with sprinkles and silver dragees, as desired. Serving suggestion: Place each tree on sugar cookie and decorate serving tray with shredded coconut to resemble snow. Notes: For best flavor and color, start recipe with unflavored white popcorn. You can make colored sugar by adding food coloring to sugar then stirring in bowl or shaking vigorously in sealed container. Add additional food coloring for more intense tones. www.OurTowneGuilderland.com | Mid-December 2019

Happy Holidays!

This holiday season I have found myself reflecting on what brought my clients to me this year. I recently went to a wake of a client’s mother and a friend’s grandmother. The home they purchased allowed this inspiring 96 year old woman 2 years of one floor living. I have represented buyers and sellers going through very stressful divorces. I have also helped people buy and sell who were merging families. I watched a 15 year old child cry because she was scared to switch school districts. I hugged and smiled with more than one pair of first time homebuyers at the closing table. I sold quite a few homes of clients that are now sending postcards from warmer weather states. I have worked to sell the home of a beloved mother of 3 heartbroken children who passed. I had clients who made a move to accommodate their dogs. If the dogs were happy, they were happy. The list goes on, but the theme is a constant. Our road in life is up and down, bumpy and smooth, joyful and heartbreaking. I have been honored to be a part of so many lives and so many situations as a real estate agent, advisor, and consultant. I am lucky to have met so many people who have become my friends. One of my real joys is to be able to say thank you to my clients and the community for your confidence, loyalty and trust with your real estate needs. Here is to sweet memories of times past and bright hopes for all that is yet to be. Best wishes for a happy, healthy and peaceful holiday season. 1881 WESTERN AVE, GUILDERLAND, NY 28 DIVISION ST., SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY
