We thought it would be fun to ask our computer system what the top ten most popular circulating items were in 2018 here at the library. Here’s the list, in order: WiFi hotspots, folding tables, chromebooks, Poirot DVD, The Post DVD, The Great Alone, a novel by Kristin Hannah, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri DVD, Darkest Hour DVD, Wonder DVD, and The Greatest Showman DVD. It is interesting to note that just one of the top ten items is a book. When we think of libraries, for most of us, books are what comes to mind first. Libraries will always be about books, but today they are about so much more! Food for thought. The WiFi hotspots and the chromebooks are about accessing information electronically. The folding tables are one of our great success stories. A Guilderland Public Library innovation, they are so handy for garage sales, birthday parties, graduations, Thanksgiving dinners and more. We are so pleased to provide this innovative service that has been enthusiastically embraced by Guilderland library users. Sometimes you need a bunch of tables, but you don’t really want to own and store them all year long—so libraries are part of the sharing economy. The 6 DVDs on the top ten list also tell a story. While there are several streaming options available today, many patrons find the concept prohibitively expensive. Others live in parts of our town where reliable high speed internet connections are still not widely available. Still others are slow to adapt new technologies. Your library director likes old movies, and often finds that what he wants to watch is not available on Netflix or Amazon Prime—but is right on the shelf here at the library. For the more traditionally minded readers, here are the top ten books of the year, as determined by Guilderland patron checkouts: The Great Alone by Kristin Hannah; A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles; Dog Man and Cat Kid 4 by Dav Pilkey; Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan; The Woman in the Window by A.J. Finn; Little Fires Everywhere by Celeste Ng; The President is Missing by Bill Clinton and James Patterson; Bob Books by Bobby Lynn Maslen; Curious About Phonics by Margret Rey; and The Thank You Book by Mo Willems. Your library is Guilderland’s gathering place, located in the heart of the Town. There are lots of good things going on here at GPL in February and early March. Since movies are so popular, we have two movie series going to help beat the cabin-fever blues. Leading up to the Oscars, we are showing an Oscar contender every Thursday evening at 6:30 p.m. February 7th is Black Panther; On Valentine’s Day, February 14th, treat yourself and your date to First Man. February 21st is Bohemian Rhapsody; and the 28th is A Star is Born. Our popular Disney Movie series screens a different movie each month, on a Sunday. On February 24th we are showing Robin Hood at 2 p.m. Movies are always free and we even provide popcorn! Our Sunday Concert Series continues on at 2 p.m. February 10th and you’re in for a fantastic, participatory treat when local favorite Jim Gaudet and the Railroad Boys return to the Library! Blending masterful songwriting with top-notch musicianship, the group specializes in a “progressively flavored bluegrass sound, with wickedly funny, all-original lyrics.” As with all of our concerts, admission is free, but come early to get a good seat! Enjoy our acoustically perfect large meeting room!

Profiles will be accepted from 1/31 - 2/12. Your book will be waiting for you on the hold shelf from 2/14 - 2/21.Who knows? This book could be “The One!”
Rebel Bloom Art Exhibit Lovers of art, flowers, and color will love “Rebel Bloom” an exhibition of original paintings by local artist Josalyn Wilder, who also happens to be one of our librarians! The exhibit opens on February 4th and runs until March 15th.
Jewish Genealogy Data Jewish Genealogy Data: On February 17th at 2 p.m., Avraham Laber, the local developer of the rich and ever-expanding database known as Jewish Data, will give a demonstration of its facts and features. The Butt Stops Here We’re not just looking out for your figurative heart, but also for your literal one, so we are offering The Butt Stops Here, an award-winning program by St. Peter’s Health Partners that has helped thousands to stop smoking! The program begins Tuesday, February 12th at 6:30 p.m., and continues on successive Tuesdays. The program fee is $45 and the Medicaid fee is $20 per person. Our 2019 program consists of seven one-hour sessions and includes a workbook, two weeks of NRT (patches or gum), group support and other materials. The program will be led by trained facilitator Anne Marsolais. Participants should make checks payable to St. Peter’s Health Partners. Checks or cash will be collected on the first night of the program. Please Register in person, online, or by phone.
The Serious Side of Food: A Reading and Discussion Series This six-part reading and discussion series, funded by Humanities New York, will explore an aspect of our culture that often gets taken for granted: food. Food provides both nourishment and pleasure, of course, but under the surface of each meal lies a series of complex interactions and entanglements. Working with histories, novels, and journalism, this series exposes some of the issues that lie on our plates. The texts, selected by noted restaurant critic Mimi Sheraton, include historical accounts, novels, and narrative nonfiction. The series is led by Steve Barnes, Senior Writer and Arts Editor at the Times Union and Adjunct Professor of Journalism at University at Albany. Books will be provided to each participant. Space is limited. The first meeting, on March 6 at 6:30, will be a quick 1/2-hour-long session where books and the syllabus will be distributed. Subsequent meetings will be on March 20 and 27; April 3, 17, 24; May 1. Please plan to attend all. 4

notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org
Peter G. Barber - Town Supervisor
Guilderland, NY - As I write these notes, we are awaiting another snow storm. I’d like to thank our Highway Department crews for keeping our roads clear under the most demanding weather conditions. Please continue helping the Highway Department with its snow clearing efforts by following the ban on overnight parking on Town roads and by keeping a safe distance from the Highway Department’s snowplow trucks. You should also be mindful of the Parks and Recreation Department’s sidewalk plows which are not easily visible when clearing huge mounds of plowed snowfall along Western Avenue. The accompanying is a rare photo of what these machines look like when idle and not buried in snow. This winter’s weather has allowed the Parks and Recreation Department to provide winter recreation activities, including groomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails at the Western Turnpike Golf Course, sledding at the Winter Recreation Area, just south of Tawasentha Park on Route 146, and snowshoeing on the Vosburgh Trails. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve also offers miles of hiking trails suitable for snowshoeing, with trail heads in the Town. The Parks and Recreation Department’s webpage and office ((518) 456-3150) has information about winter activities and has cross-country skis and snowshoes available for rent on weekdays at the Parks’ Office on Route 146, opposite Tawasentha Park. Parks Department and Golf Course employees are busily trimming trees, painting structures, working on historic properties, and doing other work that is necessary to make Town facilities ready for use. This is also the time for planning the expansion of hiking trails in the growing Town-owned open spaces and adding amenities to Town parks. The Town’s recently announced a project with UAlbany Planning Department to create a multiuse trail system using the Town’s open space, parks, and sidewalks to connect neighborhoods, parks, schools, businesses, and other destinations. The project has been scheduled for the fall semester. Later this month, the Assessor will mail tentative assessment letters (“impact notices”) to property owners. Unlike most assessments, the Assessor will also provide each property owner with the five comparable property sales which were used to determine a property’s tentative value. The Assessor’s staff and 6

the Town’s revaluation consultant will offer each property owner an opportunity for an informal review about their assessment. These informal meetings are part of the Town’s goal for the most informative and transparent assessment possible and will supplement a property owner’s statutory rights for more formal hearings. The Assessor and Town consultant have scheduled the last informational seminar about the 2019 revaluation process for Thursday, February 7th at 7pm at Town Hall. In the spring, the Assessor will hold seminars on how to challenge an assessment. The Assessor’s webpage has 2019 reassessment information, timelines, and PowerPoint presentations. Several senior citizen and multi-family housing developments are at various stages of review. We continue to receive letters, emails, and phone calls from residents concerned about growth impacts as well as from residents interested in downsizing and moving to the new residential developments. Details regarding each pending proposal are available on the Planning Department’s website where you can also view the Town Planner’s recent PowerPoint presentation on pending residential developments and the role of the neighborhood studies. The Capital District Transportation Committee just issued its Trails Plan which promotes diverse transportation options for area residents, including multi-use trails which complement local roadway infrastructure and public transit systems. Here’s the link: www.cdtcmpo.org/trails The Trails Plan includes dozens of existing and planned multi-
use trails including many accessible in or near the Town. The Town recently received a generous grant from Assemblyperson Patricia Fahy for the future construction of safe bicycle routes in and near Guilderland Center and the Watervliet Reservoir. Town officials recently met with NYS DOT officials about planned improvements to the Carman Road/Lydius Street intersection. Later this year, DOT will hold a public outreach meeting, with details of the planned work, including turning lanes and sidewalk construction near the intersection. DOT expects to award the construction contract in December, with construction in late spring 2020. At roughly the same time, with a grant secured by Assemblyperson Fahy, the Town will install sidewalks to extend safe pedestrian connections to the Pine Bush Elementary School. This summer DOT will also repave the entire length of Carman Road except for the part near the Lydius Street intersection. At its last meeting, the Town Board issued a request for proposals for the construction of the new pumping station for the water interconnection with the Town of Rotterdam. The new pumping station is designed to allow water flow in both directions between the communities. We anticipate that the interconnection will be active this fall. This municipal interconnection is the latest in the Town’s long-term efforts to diversify available water sources to meet an ever-increasing demand for our growing Town.
The Town and the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce have partnered for a second year on the Hometown Heroes Banner Program which honors residents of Guilderland, Berne, Knox and Westerlo who are veterans or are serving in our Nation’s Armed Forces. The planned banners will honor a service member by including his or her name, branch of service and photo and will be affixed to light poles at Tawasentha Park and the Guilderland Public Library. The banners will be flown from May to November when the retired banners will be presented to the honored service member’s family or sponsor. If you are interested in sponsoring a banner at a cost of $150, you can download a sponsorship form on the Town’s website or the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce’s website (www.guilderlandchamber.com). For more information, please contact the Chamber at (518) 456-6611 or Parks & Recreation at (518) 456-3150. Thank you again for taking the time to read these Notes and please do not hesitate to contact Town offices if you have any questions or suggestions. Peter G. Barber Town Supervisor

Wing It for Game Day (Family Features) When bringing your friends and family together to watch the game, you’ll likely want to avoid any fumbles in the kitchen. Fret not and opt for a big batch of easy-to-make wings while incorporating these stress-free tips into your game plan to help ensure a resounding success: ·
Delegate responsibilities. The best gatherings are a team sport. Tackle this recipe for Crispy Baked Wings and let your friends help with snacks, dips and drinks.
·
Prep what you can the day before. Reduce the time needed to make these wings on game day by prepping some steps in advance. The seasoning blend and sauces can be prepped up to two days in advance and chicken wings can be separated into drums and flats the day before.
·
Veggies are underrated. It’s usually a good plan to have a snack that can be easily replenished for grazers attending your party. Stock up on vegetables that are easy to slice such as carrots and celery. Place some of the cut vegetables out with dips like blue cheese dressing or ranch, both of which can double as classic pairings for your wings.
·
Redefine “homemade.” The Crispy Baked Wings can serve as a versatile base for just about any sauce you might be craving. Instead of making a sauce entirely from scratch, consider making some quick alterations to premade ones. For example, add an ingredient like Tabasco Chipotle Sauce to store-bought barbecue sauce to impart a smoky flavor and lime juice for added brightness. Small changes can add that special, homemade quality without all the work. Recipes like Chipotle Barbecue Sauce or Nashville-Style Sauce can complement wings for true crowd-pleasers – pick your favorite or try both.
Find more flavorful recipes and game day tips at Tabasco.com/wings. Prep time: 10 minutes

“Six Degrees of Separation” from Family Court by Leyla A. Kiosse
Guilderland, NY - We have written countless articles about legal issues that are common to marriage, divorce, and children – such as the custody of children, the division of assets, spousal support, and child support. But there are many more issues that children and families encounter, and those issues, by and large, are adjudicated in Family Courts. Over the next several months, we will take a closer look at the powers of Family Court and discuss why that Court is (at least in this writer’s view) the most important Court in the community in which we live. While many people may never find themselves in Family Court, I guarantee that those same people know someone, or know someone who knows someone else, who has had some experience in Family Court. A review of Family Court’s power (i.e. jurisdiction) is demonstrative of why this is true. The jurisdiction of Family Court is set forth Section 155 of Article 1 of the Family Court Act. There are some matters that only Family Court has the power to hear and determine; those matters are as follows: (i)
abuse and neglect proceedings;
(ii) support proceedings (both pertaining to children and spouses)1; (iii) proceedings to determine paternity and for the support of children born out-of-wedlock; (iv) proceedings to permanently terminate parental rights to guardianship and custody of a child by, for example, reason of permanent neglect, mental illness, intellectual disability and severe or repeated child abuse, and by reason of death of one or both parents, where no guardian of the person of the child has been lawfully appointed, or by reason of abandonment of the child for a period of six months immediately prior to the filing of the petition, where a child is under the jurisdiction of the Family Court as a result of a placement in foster care by that Court; (v) proceedings concerning whether a person is in need of supervision (commonly known as “PINS”); and (vi) proceedings concerning juvenile delinquency. The term “Juvenile delinquent” is defined by statute and, in general, means a person over seven and less than seventeen years of age, who, having committed an act that would constitute a crime, or a violation, is not criminally responsible for such conduct by reason of his/her infancy2. There are also some matters that Family Court has “concurrent jurisdiction” over with other Courts, which means that the matter can be brought in Family Court or another Court. For example, Family Court has concurrent jurisdiction with criminal Court over all family offenses (which are specific crimes that also constitute “family offenses” as defined in the Family Court Act). When there is no divorce action pending in Supreme Court. Juvenile delinquency proceedings have undergone significant changes as a result of Raise the Age legislation; stay tuned for more on this topic in our future column.

Barron is an extremely gentle two-year old male cat looking for his forever home. He loves to cuddle, purr, and put his arms around your neck. His owner moved and put him and seven other cats outside with no means of food or shelter. He was so glad to be rescued Barron is shy at first but once he knows he is safe he will hang out with you wherever you are in the house. He will want to sleep with you at night cuddled right next to you. Barron loves to interact and hang out with other cats and would be a great companion for another cat or two. He currently lives with 8 other cats in his foster home. If you give this shy guy a chance he will reward you with unconditional love and companionship. Barron is neutered, up-to-date on his vaccines and has tested negative for Felv/Fiv. If you would like to know more about Barron contact brightsky@nycap.rr.com or 518-461-0251.
Oliver Oliver is a handsome mellow two-year old short hair orange male. He is ever so gentle and enjoys playing and hanging out with the other cats in his foster home. Oliver loves his treats, likes to be brushed and will want to share your bed at night. Oliver will meet you at the door when you come home. He seeks out and wants to be with humans - a great companion. He is playful and very active. He enjoys his toys and loves to play with the other cats in the house. In terms of playfulness, he is very kitten-like. Sadly, his owner moved and left him behind. A kind neighbor was feeding him. He cried to come inside their house for two winters but they declined. Oliver is now safe and healthy waiting for his forever home to come along. Oliver is neutered, tested negative for FIV/Felv, and up-to-date on his vaccines. The best home for him is a home with a cat who will welcome a playful buddy. Feel free to contact 518461-0251 or brightsky@nycap.rr.com for more information.

How old should my child be before I make their first dental appointment? Guilderland, NY - We get asked this question all the time. The answer is you should take them in by the time they celebrate their first birthday. First visits are mostly about getting kids used to the dentist's chair and educating parents about how to care for baby's teeth. If your child has transitioned from the bottle to cup and doesn't snack or drink in the middle of the night, you get a one-year pass, until age 2. That's when Dr. Oshins' every-six-month dental visit recommendation kicks into gear. When your child is between ages 4 and 6, expect the first set of X-rays to be taken to check for cavities lurking between the teeth Prevention is the name of the game between ages 6 and 12, when baby teeth give way to permanent teeth. Dr. Oshins will probably suggest a sealant, a plastic resin that bonds to teeth's chewing surfaces, between ages 5 and 7. Cavity-prone molars are the most likely site for treatment. The resin keeps cavity-causing bacteria from getting into the grooves and valleys of teeth. Also, when your child is around age 7, Dr. Oshins will likely suggest an orthodontic evaluation. Most kids will wait until their early teens for braces, but orthodontics is about modifying jaw growth, so identifying skeletal causes of narrow jaws and crooked teeth early helps ensure a beautiful smile later on and promotes healthy sleep and development by preventing sleep-disordered breathing. If you begin taking your child to the dentist around the time the first tooth erupts, then they are probably too young to be nervous. But if you’ve waited until your child is older (for example, 2 years), then he or she may have some anxiety at the time of the first visit. In celebration of National Children's Dental Health Month, Oshins of Smiles would like to help your children understand what to expect at a dental office. During the month of February we will be having Open Houses on each Thursday -open to all children, not just the children of our current patients, in hopes of alleviating any anxiety they may be feeling. Dental Open House Event Date: Thursday February 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th 9:00am - 4:00pm Location: Oshins of Smiles 3905 Carman Road Schenectady, NY 12303 Please call 518-356-5635 or email us at info@oshinsofsmiles.com for more information. *Please note that no dental examinations will take place during this event.* It is our goal that your child will see going to the dentist is fun, safe, and a positive experience. We really do have fun every day at work thanks to our awesome team and thanks to all the fun and energetic children that we get to see. We look forward to your visit!

Interview with Sue Hennessy Q. What year did your organization start? A. 2 years ago several people from the community met once a month and brainstormed ways that we could help Guilderland become a more caring community. We visualized a community where residents looked out for one another and helped each other when a member was experiencing difficulties. We also envisioned a town that people interacted socially with each other a bit more. Q. Where are you located? A. We operate out of the Guilderland Food Pantry and the Chamber of Commerce. Q. What is your phone number and website address? A. 518-320-8903 Guilderlandcares@gmail.com Facebook.com/GuilderlandCares Q. What hours are you open? A. We will answer calls at 518-320-8903 between 8-6 every day. Calls range from looking for an organization that can help you when you are in need, socially, legally economically or health wise. In the future we would like to answer calls about events happening in Guilderland. Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. People kept talking to me about their vision of Guilderland agencies or business working together as a community. So I invited clergy, businessmen and woman, town officials to the table to talk about what that would look like.

We will be holding these free meals every 3rd Wed of the month at the Guilderland Food Pantry located at 4 Charles Park, Guilderland, inside Christ Church. A “Village” community is a model that exist in many areas of NY State. The main characteristic of a village is members looking out for one another, young and elderly and disabled included. There would be many social event for members of that community also. Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. We are an organization that has ongoing projects. If anyone in the community is interested in joining us they can call Sue Hennessy at 518-573-0453 or email her at guildfoodpantry79@gmail.com.
Aiding Aging Parents
Relive Memories Encourage older relatives to write (or dictate) their thoughts on financial tips, military service, business success, valued life lessons and, of course, the stories of how they met their spouses. Make a family tree together and try creating a photobook with old and new pictures. Share news about family members’ relationships and accomplishments, which might bring back personal memories.
4 tips to help overcome new challenges
(Family Features) It’s not easy getting old, as the saying goes, and it can be even harder to watch your parents age. Helping parents transition into the later years of their lives can be a delicate matter, but there are ways to help them ease into an elderly stage and cope better with challenges. Carol Lavin Bernick, former executive chairman of Alberto Culver, navigated this type of life transition with her parents. In her book, “Gather As You Go: Lessons Learned Along the Way,” Bernick offers tips to give and get joy while preserving your parents’ dignity in addition to wisdoms on business and leadership, philanthropy, dealing with tough times and being a working mom. For example, consider these tips and ways to aid aging parents:
Consider the Little Things Surprise your parents with a few new pieces of clothing for a thoughtful gift. Laminate a list of their medications and their doctors to keep with you in case of emergency and provide a copy to your parents and any other caregivers. Create a contact list on your parents’ mobile phone to help them easily reach family and friends without needing to search. If there are young children in the family, try bringing them by for a visit – their energy and smiles may help brighten the room.
Provide Entertainment Music can be a helpful gift – try loading a music player with a playlist of your parents’ favorite songs. Old movies can also spark conversation. Host a luncheon for some of their best friends and make their favorite treats. They may be housebound, but there are still ways for them to interact. Adjust to Physical Changes Reading materials could require larger-than-normal print, and a magnifying clip-on screen for a computer can be helpful as well. Serving foods that are easier to cut can make eating a simpler process. Keep an eye on weight and nutrition and try to find someone who will make a house call for haircuts.

PROBIOTIC BREAKDOWN By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling
Guilderland, NY - What do you know about probiotics…other than they are in your yogurt? Maybe you have seen Jamie Lee Curtis on the commercials promoting Activia yogurt for intestinal regularity. Here is the scoop: probiotics are microorganisms that live in our gut (small and large intestine) and other areas of our bodies. These little guys are a major component of your immune system. Science has referred to our guts as a “second brain” because these organisms send signals to our brains to let it know what is going on below. This system is called the Brain-Gut-Microbiome Axis. Scientists are discovering more specifications as to their effects on the human body. Recent research suggests that by having a strong intestinal immune system it has a synergistic effect on the integrity of the brain. This communication through the endocrine system (hormones) and the immune system can result in reduced stress, anxiety, depression and appetite control to name a few benefits. In years to come, you will start to see more information relating specific bacteria (or lack of it in our gut-biome) and causing illness in our bodies. Here is a list of some of the most common probiotic microorganisms that you may see on supplement labels: Lactobacillus acidophilus: One of the main probiotics found in mouth, intestines and vagina. It aids in digestion and also treats diarrhea, Candida, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), UTI’s, leaky gut syndrome, reduces lactose intolerance, increases our absorption of calcium, B vitamins and can even improve appetite control. Helps balance pH of the upper intestinal track which may help with heartburn. It also facilitates the digestion of lactose. Bifidobacterium lactis: Main probiotic to break down body waste & aid in the absorption of various vitamins & minerals. Decreases lactose intolerance, IBS, constipation and diarrhea. It decreases cavity causing bacteria in the mouth, fights cancer tumors, reduces colds, flu and strengthens the immune system. Lactobacillus plantarum: This probiotic produces antibiotics and lysine, an essential amino acid. It can help fight topical burn infections while accelerating burn healing. Fights fungal infection and postoperative infections. It decreases frequency of colds, flu and strengthens your immune system specifically in nasal and sinus passages.
Lactobacillus casei: Good for digestion, allergies, immune system. Helps to maintain remission of diverticular disease, resists ulcers by inhibiting H. pylori. It prevents colorectal tumor growth and inhibits tumor growth of carcinomatous peritonitis/stomach cancer. Lactobacillus rhamnosus: Helps maintain a healthy vaginal microbiota by increasing beneficial bacteria making this a great treatment for chronic vaginosis. Supports urogenital health. Boosts immune system to reduce colds and flu, respiratory infections and ear infections. Bifodobacterium bifidum: This probiotic directly competes with Candida & yeast overgrowth, fights E. coli infections, decreases allergies, reduces ulcers and inflammation. Lactobacillus salivarius: Fast growing hardy probiotic that crowds out bad bacteria quickly. It produces antibiotics that target invading pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella. It aids in protein digestion, reduces cavities, gingivitis and strep throat. It can also reduces mastitis, ulcerative colitis and IBS. Supports intestinal epithelial tight junctions to reduce leaky gut or intestinal permeability. Streptococcus thermophiles: Produces antibiotics that prevent infections like pneumonia, C. difficile and ulcers caused by H. pylori. Decreases ulcerative colitis, IBS, and acute diarrhea. Reduces symptomatic dermatitis, chance of kidney stones and has anti-tumor activity. Improves immunity. If you would like to learn more about how probiotics can improve your health, we are here to answer your questions and help you boost your immune system. If you want to do your own research, GO TO GOOGLE SCHOLAR, not regular Google! This will give you research articles about whatever health topic you wish to learn about. The LEGO Americana Roadshow, presented by MVP Health Care, is a free traveling roadshow stopping at Crossgates in just over a week, starting on February 9th, marking its first Upstate New York appearance for the 17-day interactive exhibit. The all-ages event will be open to the public, taking place throughout the upper level and lower level of the mall, with a LEGO Play Area, from 10:00 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. on Monday through Saturday and 11:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. on Sundays. Anchoring the festivities are ten large-scale replicas of iconic American buildings, including The White House, U.S. Capitol, The Statue of Liberty, The Liberty Bell, and The Lincoln Memorial. Additional show activities include: •
LEGO Brickscapes will be placed throughout Crossgates and will feature an intricate level of detail and creativity in these six themed landscapes, such as Mount Rushmore and Duplo Castle. A Brickscape will also be placed in the lobby of the Tru & Homewood Suites by Hilton at Crossgates. Stop by to check it out and receive a Statue of Liberty kit (*while supplies last).
•
A LEGO Play Area, presented by MVP Health Care, where people of all ages can build whatever their heart desires located on the lower level near Lord & Taylor.
•
An activity that guests can follow along with to visit each landmark, answer questions about the exhibits and receive a free LEGO Americana collective card pack when turned into the LEGO Store (*while supplies last), lower level across from H&M.
“We are bringing a piece of Americana to Crossgates – except these are built by LEGO Master Creators over thousands of hours using over half a million standard LEGO bricks,” says Michael Gately, General Manager of Crossgates. “The show is a fun way for families to learn about and admire our country’s landmarks, while also getting to roll up their sleeves and make their own creations.” “MVP Health Care is proud to sponsor The LEGO Americana Roadshow as it makes its first visit to the Capital Region. MVP will be at Crossgates each day of the roadshow with contests, giveaways, and much more. We’re happy to be a part of this fun experience for families,” said Ted Herman, MVP’s senior leader of marketing and communications. In addition, families with special needs can experience the LEGO Americana Roadshow, on the lower level by Lord & Taylor both Wednesdays before it opens to the public from 9am-10am. This compassionate, sensory-friendly event allows families and their children with all spectrums of special needs to experience this LEGO event in a comforting environment prior to mall hours. 5 Tips to Successfully Bring a New Pet into Your Home (Family Features) Bringing home a puppy or kitten can lead to a lot of excitement. However, discussing issues that may arise and preparing in advance for a new pet’s arrival can help make for a smooth transition. Consider these tips from the pet experts at PetSmart Charities to help make your new pet’s adjustment to its forever home a resounding success. Know that pet parenting is a lifetime commitment. That oh-so-sweet puppy or kitten stage only lasts so long, so be sure that you’re prepared to give a lifetime of loving care. Nurturing the bond you create during the early months can create a foundation for lifelong companionship. Consider adoption first. There are literally thousands of animals of all breeds and ages looking for loving homes. Consider adopting a pet that needs a home from a local shelter or adoption event. “When you consider an option like adoption, you can make sure one less dog or cat is living in a shelter while also providing the gift of unconditional love to a furry friend in need,” said David Haworth, DVM, Ph.D., president of PetSmart Charities, which helps find forever homes and families for more than 500,000 shelter pets each year. “As a way to make adoption more accessible, we work with local adoption partners to bring adoptable pets into PetSmart stores each and every day, and especially during our National Adoption Weekends, which take place in stores nationwide.” Select an appropriate pet. Integrating a pet into your household, especially for a first-time pet owner, can take some work. It’s important to consider factors like how often you travel, whether your work schedule will allow a visit home during the day for a potty-training puppy and if you’re willing to provide necessary care, such as daily brushing for a long-haired animal. Also consider whether you truly want a puppy or a kitten; an adult pet offers numerous benefits, such as potentially being house-trained already and more resilient for play with small kids. Provide structure for your pet. In a new family, a pet will often look for where he or she fits in and try to understand the rules of the house. Dogs, especially, crave routine, boundaries and rules. Cats like to know what to expect, too. When pets don’t understand, they can feel uncertain and some pets might hide until they feel more comfortable. Sensible rules can help pets feel secure in their new environments. Being consistent with training, helping pets understand what behavior you want and providing a solid routine can help them feel comfortable and confident. Prepare for pet parenting. The sweet kisses and cuddles are fun, but a new pet requires some preparation. Stock up on items like ageappropriate food and toys. Look into training classes and find a veterinarian you trust for regular checkups. Also take time to pet-proof your home, removing items that may pose a health threat or create temptations for undesirable behaviors. Find more advice on introducing a new pet to your home and locate a local adoption event near you at petsmartcharities.org. Photo courtesy of Getty Images 22

Always Expect the Unexpected by Master Rice
Guilderland, NY - Growing up I used to watch Monty Python’s Flying Circus on PBS late night TV. The humor of the show is, in my opinion, truly outstanding, though at times a little dark. And to be frank, I don’t like everything they did. Along with many of the lines of Star Wars and The Matrix, I find myself inserting “Monty Python’s” lines in my daily speak. This isn’t an article about favorite movies and shows, but I was reminded of Monty Python when the snow squalls hit yesterday (1/30) and I first said: “Wow, unexpected cool storm”, followed by “No one expects the Spanish Inquisition”, a line form a renown Monty Python sketch. In the martial arts, we are trained to always expect the unexpected. Quick storms are reminders that we must always expect everything and anything. From a self-defense perspective this is not only wise, it is essential as a tool of preservation. It can be overwhelming, since awareness and expecting the unexpected can occupy your mind. Once you are able to manage it, however, it is a most valuable tool. That’s because unlike an unpreventable surprise storm, selfdefense awareness actually prevents incident. The more aware of your surroundings you are, the more self-defense situations can be avoided. Driving a vehicle is a good everyday example. The more aware and focused you are while driving, the more incidents can be simply avoided. This is especially true during storms and adverse road conditions, where we should be familiar with how the car will behave while turning and braking. Expecting the unexpected means awareness; awareness leads to avoidance. Avoidance means no conflict, no need for action. That’s because awareness is the action, the preemptive strike, so a physical strike is unnecessary. I know the storms were predicted and I know technology allows us to be prepared and aware. But still, when it hit, I was filled with awe and surprise. Even when something expected comes, it can contain unexpected elements that perhaps, even given the text contained in a warning, are surprising when directly experienced. Always expect the unexpected, a sentiment spoken by many throughout history; the origins of which are contested. Some say, and many have said to me in the past, that expecting things to go wrong represents pessimism and the lack of positive attitude. I disagree, thinking that I can maintain a positive attitude for great things and work toward them, while being aware of my surroundings and expecting something to happen, good or bad.

Guilderland, NY - Chinese philosopher Laozi noted that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Well-seasoned travelers will hasten to add that having the final destination and route in mind also contribute to a journey’s success. Individuals and couples would be welladvised to take the first step on their financial journey - enter the Financial Plan! A financial plan in its most basic form typically tries to answer the question, “Can I retire?” More specifically, a plan will try to project what level of income can be available at a given retirement age, based on several assumptions such as savings rate, investment returns, inflation, etc. However, a financial plan can and should go well beyond retirement planning to address several important questions, such as: • • • • • • • • • •
Are we paying unnecessary income taxes or capital gains taxes? How will I pay for the costs associated with higher learning? How should our investment portfolio be designed to best align with our goals and objectives? What do we want to happen to our assets if we pass away, and what’s the best way to accomplish this? How can I best gift assets to charitable organizations that are important to me? Should we be concerned about estate taxes even though we’re not worth millions of dollars? Am I taking full advantage of any benefits available from my employer? Are we properly using debt to leverage our personal balance sheet? Are there any opportunities to reduce our fixed expenses? Do we have proper insurance coverage in place to protect our lives, health, income, assets, etc.?
A well-designed financial plan will address each of the above issues, and provide an action plan for any adjustments that should be made to your current situation. A comprehensive financial planner will not only prescribe solutions, but will also work with you to implement any required courses of action. Being well-informed is not sufficient – e.g. knowing that diet and exercise are the keys to physical health is not enough without actually eating healthy and starting an exercise regimen. Likewise, knowing the proper financial steps to take is not enough without actually making positive changes! Our experience has shown us that many individuals and couples can benefit from a second opinion on their financial health. Seeking advice from a qualified financial planner can help expose any areas that should be addressed in order to best guide you on your financial journey.

5 Ways to Raise a Confident, Adventurous Child (Family Features) From taking steps toward the stairs to learning that bubbles don’t taste good, exploration is a part of development for babies and young children. While it’s an exciting time, it also can be coupled with anxiety and hesitation as parents find themselves saying “no” or jumping in when baby discovers a new space. An Open for Adventure survey from Babyganics found a majority of parents (69 percent) believe a child can learn to be more confident if he or she is allowed to explore freely as a baby. However, letting go doesn’t always come naturally for parents. Clinical health psychologist Dr. Bobbi Wegner encourages parents to be explorer parents, which focuses on raising resilient, confident and adventurous humans through challenge and discovery. She offers these tips for parents: Aid in discovery. Encourage and applaud baby’s healthy risk-taking, such as mastering a challenging stair climb or pushing through moments of frustration and failure. Additionally, create teachable moments that introduce your child to necessary limits. For example, if you have hot coffee in the morning and your little one wants to touch the mug, let him or her gently touch a warm area of the mug with a fingertip and repeat that the mug is “hot” to help encourage exploration and flex baby’s senses. Let baby be free. While you may think baby gadgets are necessary for playtime, consider rethinking those toys. Instead of searching for stimulation through lights and sounds from a toy, allow your baby to explore the natural environment. Look for opportunities that allow him or her to make a manageable mess and even get wet or dirty. This could be as simple as playing with a container filled with water or letting your baby pull up grass in the backyard. These small unstructured play adventures can help develop independence and confidence. Engage the senses. Exposing your baby to new flavors and smells helps engage him or her on a multi-sensory level. For example, allowing your baby (at an appropriate age, typically between 4-7 months) to try new foods can provide a feeling of accomplishment while also exposing him or her to different textures and flavors. Encourage even more sensory exploration by allowing your baby to smell the food and even play with it using his or her fingers. Provide early exposure to new places. Bringing baby along to restaurants and other public spaces allows for positive exposure to new places, people and sounds, which can help build the immune system, encourage social interaction and support development. While letting a child explore in a public setting like an airport or train station can make many parents anxious, carrying products such as Babyganics Alcohol-Free Hand Sanitizing Wipes can help ease parents’ apprehension and keep little hands germ-free while on the go. Wait a moment. It’s common for parents to intervene the moment baby awakes from a nap or starts moving toward the stairs. Try pausing, allowing your little one to naturally find his or her limits while managing your own fears and worries. This tactic can allow your young explorer an opportunity for cognitive and social-emotional development with you as a safety net nearby. “Parents often look to their own internal response to guide parenting: ‘If I am worried then it must be dangerous, and I should not allow my baby to do it,’” Wegner said. “When in fact, parents should prioritize their baby’s exploration and needs to provide learning opportunities rather than allowing their own anxieties to impede their children.” For more information, visit babyganics.com. 26

5 DIY Winter Home Repair Hacks (Family Features) Even if you’re not terribly handy, there are many simple household repairs that you can easily do yourself to avoid unnecessary time and expense. This is especially true in the winter, when little improvements can make a big difference in your comfort and energy consumption. If you’re like most people, your home is your single largest investment, so it’s common to be apprehensive about tackling home repairs if you have little experience. However, learning to do some basic home maintenance is a smart way to protect and maintain your home’s value without having to locate, schedule and supervise a contractor. These common household fixes to winter-proof your home are easy enough for a novice, but might just give you a boost of confidence to tackle bigger projects in the future. Painting There’s no time like the dull, dark days of winter to realize how dim a room may be. When you’re spending more time indoors anyway, it might as well be for a productive purpose, like adding some life to a dreary room. Whether you update the entire space or simply add an accent wall, painting is a lowcost, entry-level way to enhance your home’s aesthetic appeal. Seal air leaks According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the average home has a halfmile of gaps and cracks where air and moisture can enter, and these air leaks account for 25-40 percent of the energy used for heating and cooling a typical home. Filling gaps and cracks brings immediate savings while making the home more comfortable and environmentally friendly. It actually takes little time or skill to fix air leaks, which are especially common around doors and windows. The key is using a quality product, such as the GREAT STUFF™ Insulating Foam Sealant, which is specially formulated to seal gaps and cracks to help block air, moisture and pests. To make repairs even easier, the sealant is available with the GREAT STUFF™ SMART DISPENSER™, which offers more precision, less mess and product reusability. Add insulation Another energy-saving idea you can tackle by yourself is improving your home’s insulation. A great deal of the home’s heat escapes through the attic, but adding more insulation can help trap warmth, making your home more energy efficient. Insulation also helps resist moisture infiltration and condensation, which is particularly concerning during the winter months. Tile accents If you’re overwhelmed by the idea of laying your own tile floor, starting with some accent tile is a simple way to practice. A bathroom or kitchen backsplash is a small space that requires a relatively small amount of material and a welldefined work space. When selecting your tile, be conscious of how much trimming you’ll need to do to accommodate features like electrical outlets; choosing a smaller tile or using sheets of tile may make that step easier. Add storage Spending extra time indoors is likely to remind you just how cluttered some areas have become. Take advantage of the time to organize and add storage elements to help keep your space neat and clean. Organizer shelves and closet systems are typically easy to assemble and can serve as functional additions to your home.
