notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org Guilderland, NY - One year after a fire destroyed the pool house at Tawasentha Park, I am pleased to report that the new beautifully designed and highly functional pool house, with private lockers and showers, is on the verge of opening. This remarkable achievement would not have been possible without the devoted and tireless efforts of Recreation Programs Director Linda Cure, Parks Supervisor Greg Wier, Parks Foreman Colin Gallup, and Recreation Administrative Assistant Amy Boyt who teamed with Delaware Engineering on the design of the pool house and monitoring of its construction, traveled far and wide for concessionaire equipment and other needed items, and worked closely with lead contractor M.A. Schaeffer Construction on the pool house construction. Upon behalf of the Town and its residents, I would like to thank everyone involved and especially thank State Senator George Amedore and Assembly member Patricia Fahy for providing needed additional funding for construction and enabling enhancements to the pool house. This collective effort has led to a modern pool house that will be enjoyed for generations of Town residents. While enjoying the pool, please explore other opportunities at Tawasentha Park including over five miles of mapped hiking trails, picnic facilities, playgrounds, pavilions, newly resurfaced tennis courts, basketball courts, and the beautifully maintained Ruth Lawlor Memorial Garden which leads to the Guilderland Performing Arts Center. Information about your Town parks and the free Thursday night concerts at GPAC is available at www.townofguilderland.org/Pages/ GuilderlandNY_Recreation/index or by calling the Parks and Recreation Office at 456-3150. And while the summer camp program at Tawasentha Park has started, it is not too late to register for programs and activities. Please visit www. guilderlandrec.com for a comprehensive list of all summer camps offered by the Town. In addition to the extensive Town park system, the Albany Pine Bush Preserve offers a wide range of summer recreational opportunities, many of which take place within our Town. With 18 miles of marked trails for hikers and mountain bikers, and programs at its Discovery Center, the Preserve has programs and activities of interest to Town residents. More information about the Preserve, and about hours of operation and programs at the Discovery Center, can be found at www.albanypinebush.org. I am also pleased to report that the Capital District Transportation Committee awarded funding to the Town in the amount of $297,000.00 to construct a new sidewalk on the south side of West Old State Road from Garden View Drive to Regina Drive, and from an existing walkway on Victoria Drive to the Lynnwood Elementary School. The design work will start in 2017, and construction will take place in 2018. This new sidewalk will complete the
Peter G. Barber - Town Supervisor pedestrian connection from Carman Road to Lynnwood Elementary School that was recommended in the Fort Hunter/Carman Road Neighborhood Transportation Plan. With over ten miles of recently installed sidewalks and the Town’s continuing acquisition of open space for future hiking and biking trails, the Town is making substantial progress in creating a network of pedestrian connections that link residential neighborhoods to businesses, schools, library, and parks. With the summer season’s heavy demand on our water resources, I again urge Town residents and businesses to follow the Town’s lawn sprinkling regulations which help maintain adequate pressure in our water system. The lack of water pressure at fire hydrants imposes an avoidable risk of harm to our firefighters, residents, and property. The required pressure, and the need to maintain the quantity and quality of water, can be met by following the Town’s lawn sprinkling regulations which limit the use of automatic sprinklers between 1 a.m. and 4 a.m. on the odd or even day in common with the address of the property. The use of manual lawn sprinklers is limited between 6:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on the odd or even day shared with the odd or even address of the property. The lawn sprinkling regulations are available at www.townofguilderland.org/ Pages/GuilderlandNY_Water/index. If you have questions or have knowledge of violations of the sprinkler regulations, please call the Water Department at 456-6474. In last month’s notes, I mentioned that the Animal Shelter has pets ready for adoption. I thank Town residents for making inquiries about adopting pets. If you’re interested in adopting a pet, please call the Animal Shelter at 861-6855 for an appointment or visit its website (www.townofguilderland.org/Pages/ GuilderlandNY_Animal/index). Starting with the Town Board’s July 12th meeting, the Animal Shelter will present a “Pets on Parade” showing pets that are currently available for adoption. We hope to continue this pet parade at future Town Board meetings and other public events. Thank you for taking the time to read these notes and I hope that you are enjoying the summer season and taking full advantage of your Town parklands. Peter G. Barber, Town Supervisor

School’s Out For Summer By Master Rice
Guilderland, NY - We heard a huge sigh of relief from children everywhere as school concluded, and now, for a brief time, we get a respite from the daily grind of school. But I have always felt that children need direction and they crave structure. Don’t get me wrong, I also feel that in this day and age children are over scheduled and directed too much. Kids need time to be kids by having free time to be creative. In our afterschool program students get free outside and inside time to do just that: be kids. You would be amazed by the games they invent on the playground. They remind me of the games we used to come up with during all of our free time in my neighborhood when I was a kid. We are proud to provide the proper framework within which this is possible and productive. We are also very happy to provide this service to our families and community in an age where reaching for an electronic device is second nature and we lack the motivation to just get out and play. Summer provides the chance for all kids to relax without the pressures of homework and tests but also gives opportunity for some structure. Family activities are at the top on the list. At Guilderland Martial Arts and everywhere family is always the priority; the more time children can spend with their families the better. That’s why our family training program is so strong. During these warmer months there are also so many other activities close by that you don’t even need a “vacation”: hiking, fishing, picnicking, or even short road trips. Make sure to get out with your family and enjoy! At Guilderland Martial Arts, we slip right into our summer program. Our camp is a great example of children having an excellent framework and direction with the freedom
to be creative. Each week in our summer camp includes the inherent discipline of martial arts with the creativity and flexibility of stunt fighting skit routines and outdoor play time. Students can demonstrate leadership in group planning and creativity in designing and performing stunt fighting scenes and board breaking routines. Students have so much fun being physical actors and performing and the positive impact on self-esteem and character are astounding. If you want your children to get this kind of experience, check it out, there may be a spot available in one or more of our summer camp weeks. If you want to train with your children or just experience the martial arts yourself, there is always room in our ongoing class schedule for you throughout the summer and into next school year. Next month I will present a tribute to our National Championship Competition Team. We will be competing in Richmond, Virginia the first week of July for our chance to be invited to Team Trials for Team USA!

More often than not, this type of pain is caused by a sudden change or increase in physical activities that cause repeated stress on the knees: such as jogging, squatting, kneeling, and climbing stairs (or mountains!) With PFJS, the kneecap is often not tracking properly within the groove created for it between the thigh and shin bones. In order to identify the cause of this change in knee mechanics, we have to investigate problems that may be occurring in the joints above and below the knees. Muscular imbalances or weaknesses in the hips, ankles and feet coupled with repeated physical activity can manifest as pain in the knees. Having weak hip and gluteal muscles, weak quadriceps
be originating from your hips or feet. Treatments typically include strengthening the lateral hip muscles to prevent the knees from falling into a “knock-kneed” position, foot and arch strengthening exercises, manual or instrument assisted myofascial release of the lateral quadriceps and IT Band to prevent the kneecap from being pulled to the outside, mobilization or adjustment of the involved joints, cold laser or ultrasound therapy to decrease inflammation as well as taping techniques. 5 IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE TYING THE KNOT by Leyla A. Kiosse
Guilderland NY - Wedding season is upon us. So instead of discussing issues that arise when there is marital discord, I thought I would take a moment to talk about issues that should be considered before you get married.
those obligations paid timely? If there are support obligations, you must be comfortable with the fact that part of your marital resources may used to satisfy those obligations.
Marriage is a social and financial contract for which the law provides certain benefits and burdens. Before you make such a serious commitment to another person, you should (minimally) have the following 5 pieces of information about your future spouse.
5. Future Support Obligations – What future obligations does she have to her children? Children become more expensive the older they get (e.g. extracurricular activities and college expenses). If your future spouse has an obligation to pay for her child’s college expenses, will there be enough marital resources for the two of you to have (and support) children of your own?
1. Income – Do you know how much she makes? Once you are married, any money that is earned is presumed to be marital property. It is no longer “my paycheck” but “our paycheck.” If you are going to build a life together, then you will need to know how much money there is. 2. Taxes – Have you seen her income tax returns? Income tax returns reveal a lot of information, such as the existence of children, spousal support obligations, investments or retirement accounts, and if taxes are owed. Unpaid taxes can be a significant financial headache. 3. Debts –Before you exchange rings, you should exchange credit reports. If your future spouse has significant debts, are you prepared to help pay those debts off or suffer the consequences if the debts are not satisfied? 4. Support Obligations – Does she have any support obligations to children or a former spouse? If so, are
While the importance of discussing these topics may seem like a nobrainer to many of you, you would be surprised at the number of couples who do not talk about these issues. I have represented many clients that do not know (and never knew) basic financial information about the other spouse. Those clients are often the recipient of an unhappy surprise, such as discovering that there is a lien on their marital home because the other spouse owed back taxes, or that the other spouse had so much debt that she liquidated retirement accounts to pay off the debts. I cannot think of a topic less romantic than taxes and debts. However, you must remember that if a marriage is “for better, for worse, for richer, for poorer,” it will be necessary to have open and honest conversations about finances. His score placed him in the top 3 finishers in the country in his age group, and he will next compete in Major League Baseball’s National Pitch, Hit & Run Competition Finals at the MLB All-Star Game celebration in San Diego on Monday, July 11th. There are just 24 youngsters who have achieved this level of success across the country. This year’s Scott’s MLB Pitch, Hit and Run Competition Finals will take place at Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, in advance of the T-Mobile Home Run Derby. Tyler will attend many of the All-Star festivities and get to be on the field to shag fly balls during the T-Mobile Home Run Derby. Kids are divided into four age divisions: 7/8, 9/10, 11/12, 13/14, and have the chance to advance through four levels of competition, including Team Championships at Major League ballparks and the National Finals at the 2016 MLB All-Star Game.
Witazek. “I want to make my teammates proud and do my best to show all of the skills our coaches have worked on with us at the Guilderland Little League”, he said. His advice for other Little Leaguers, “Make sure you practice hard. Every day. I love it. I can’t get enough baseball.”
The individual Pitching, Hitting and Running Champions, along with the All-Around Champion in each division age group at the Local Competition will be awarded and advance to the sectional Level of Competition. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the official MLB skills competition, and this year more than 625,000 participants competed in more 4,600 local competitions to reach the Finals in San Diego.
Tyler’s mother, Maria Witazek, said her son was ready to compete from the start. “When we heard the Guilderland Little League was hosting MLB’s Pitch, Hit and Run Competition, Tyler said, ‘I am going to San Diego’.” She explained the support the family has received has been tremendous. “The Guilderland Little League has been like a family. Tyler had the biggest fan club at Yankee Stadium. Jon Phillips (GLL Board President) and a bunch of Tyler’s teammates travelled to cheer him on. They have been so great”.
The journey began for Tyler with a local competition hosted by the Guilderland Little League on May 1st at Keenholts Park in Guilderland, NY. Having beautiful facilities to learn the game is not lost on the youth of the Guilderland Little League. “Being able to play on the fields for Guilderland Little League makes you feel like you are in the major leagues” according to Guilderland Little Leaguer Tyler

from the
GUILDERLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY
2228 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 456-2400 • www.guilpl.org
It was a “Win-Win-Win!” Guilderland, NY - By design, the late afternoon of Thursday, June 30, was a delightfully busy time at the Guilderland Public Library. Not only did hundreds of young readers come to GPL to sign up for the Super Summer Reading Olympics, but several local dignitaries and community leaders arrived for a ceremonial Ribbon Cutting to mark the official “opening” of several key library improvements. Thanks to a grant received through Senator George A. Amedore, Jr., the library has a new roof and new loading dock. Assemblyperson Patricia Fahy’s recent efforts led to funding a comprehensive overhaul of the library’s interior and exterior lighting with energy-efficient LEDs. Support from the Alfred Z. Solomon Trust and the Guilderland Library Foundation granted a long-wanted feature for the front of the library: a digital sign to advise the public of forthcoming events. And through the construction-management efforts of the Guilderland Central School District – who leveraged their construction projects
with the library’s – the roof and loading dock were completed at a cost significantly less than if the library handled and paid for those projects on its own. “Projects that invest in infrastructure improvements are so important, and this is a prime example of what needs to be done,” said Senator Amedore. “I’m very glad I was able to get this aid to improve one of Guilderland’s key cultural centers.” Assemblyperson Fahy was excited to see the effect the brighter lighting had on the library, notably in the children’s area: “I am thrilled that we can use capital funds to make improvements such as this lighting project that makes it easier for children to read. The idea with these grants is to improve our infrastructure; hopefully we’ll get a ripple effect.” Guilderland Supervisor Peter Barber noted “New roof, new lighting, and a new loading dock. It’s a win-win-win!”

“Not only have these improvements made our community’s library a better place for our patrons to read, research, and relax, but they’ve also gone a long way to extending the life of this decades-old building,” stated Library Director Tim Wiles. “The new lighting is an enormous, money-saving improvement, and the new roof ensures that our collection and customers and staff are safe from the elements. The digital sign seems to be bringing more people into our events, and, as far as the loading dock, well, that’s just one of those behind-the-scenes things that had to be done.”

ARE YOUR TEETH READY FOR SUMMER? Guilderland, NY - Summer is all about sandy beaches, family and vacations times. With lots happening this season, chances are that you smile a lot. And to show off what you’ve got, it’s essential you take good care of your pearly whites. Summer especially is one season when we indulge in different kinds of beverages. Good or bad for teeth is hardly a thought that crosses our mind while we quench our thirst. But some of these refreshing beverages are the main cause of Tooth wear. The PH of various beverages- carbonated drinks, teas, wines, sport drinks and energy drinks can be harmful to your tooth structure. Tooth wear (also termed non-carious tooth substance loss) is the term used to describe the progressive loss of a tooth’s surface due to actions other than those which cause tooth decay or dental trauma. Tooth wear can typically be categorized as pathological or physiologic. As people age there is a certain amount of wear and tear that occurs and is considered normal. Pathological tooth wear is wear that occurs beyond the scope of what is considered typical. This can have impacts on a person’s function and chewing ability, esthetic concerns, and can become painful if tooth wear exposes the nerve.
Abrasion and Erosion are caused by environmental factors. Abrasion is caused by physical wear by extraneous objects, toothpaste, toothbrush, tongue, and cheeks. It’s an abnormal wearing away of the tooth substance by causes other than mastication. Erosion is the progressive loss of tooth substance by chemical processes that do not involve bacterial action. These lesions can appear crater-like, cupped out areas on the biting surfaces or at the base of the tooth near the gumline. The frequency and inappropriate use of various beverages, sports drinks and energy drinks can be harmful due to the high pH and will cause tooth structure loss. Erosion is often seen in patients that have GERD( gastrooesophageal reflux disease). It is important to distinguish between these various types of tooth wear, provide an insight into diagnosis, risk factors, and causative factors, in order to implement appropriate interventions. Feel free to call our office to learn more or stop in with your brand of toothpaste to find out where it falls on the abrasiveness index of common toothpastes to prevent tooth wear. We will help you brighten your smile during this summer! With Oshins of love...
Tooth structure loss can be caused by three things: Occlusion (how your teeth come together) and is called Attrition and Abfraction. Secondly, The Brain , which is abnormal Attrition- called Bruxism and thirdly, the Environment which can cause Abrasion and Erosion. Attrition is the normal mechanical wear from mastication. A shared risk factor can be if your tooth is opposing a porcelain crown. Wear patterns are based on your chewing patterns and can be considered pathological when it occurs to a greater extent than would normally be expected given a patient’s age. So by age 100 you should only lose 1mm of tooth structure, thats 1 micron per year! Abfraction is caused by biomechanical loading forces. This pathological loss of hard tooth substance is caused by biomechanical loading forces. Such loss is thought to be due to flexure and ultimate fatigue of enamel and/or dentin at some point distant from the actual point of loading. These lesions can often look wedge-shaped and are at the base of the tooth near the gumline. Abnormal Attrition called Bruxism is Brain mediated. It’s usually caused by clenching or bruxing one tooth surface against another. The typical pattern is horizontal(lateral) and linear.

www.guilderhaven.org FOR ADOPTION “TANNER” is a neutered male cat, who was found in a back yard in January looking for food. When we took him in to be neutered, he tested positive for Feline Leukemia, therefore cannot be released back outside with other cats. He needs a home without other cats or with other cats who are Feline Leukemia positive. He is very friendly: likes to be brushed, loves to play w/toys, sat in my lap while sewing at the machine. I pick him up all the time. He had his Rabies Vaccine and Distemper Vaccine. He doesn’t seem to trust the foster dog that is downstairs w/him so wants to atttack the dog (they are separated by a doggie gate and Tanner gets to come out when the foster dog is out for a walk. As soon as he hears us coming, he darts back to his room. If interested in this sweet cat, please call Deb at 518-765-5007. “TILLMAN” is an extremely gentle laid-back 5yr old kitty who has had a very tough life prior to being rescued. He is an extremely handsome shorthair grey tiger w/ a white chest and feet. His green eyes will melt your heart when he rolls over to give you his belly to be rubbed. Tillman was found living outside in the winter in the inner-city. He was scrounging for food trying to stay warm and alive. When he was rescued it was initially thought he had lost his one ear due to frostbite. However, the vet feels he was born with only a partial ear. Tillman lives w/ his foster Dad and 5 other kitties who he gets along with very well. He is shy at first and will need to go slowly. Once he gets to know you he is a HUGE lover. He will wait for you in the morning along with the other kitties for his “wet food snack” and sleep in the chair beside your bed. And, lately, he has been joining his Dad to sleep right in the bed. He loves to hang out and will look to you for words of encouragement. Although he has no interest in going back outside he enjoys watching the birds and squirrels from the windows. The best home for Tillman would be a quieter home where he can continue to feel safe and blossom. In return Tillman will reward you with lots of gentle snuggles. Tillman is neutered and has tested negative for FIV/Felv. He is up-to-date on his vaccines. For more info call 518-461-0251 or brightsky@nycap.rr.com.

The “old-fashioned” way involves manually tracking every dollar and cent which you (and your family) spend on any item – ranging from a bagel and coffee purchase, mortgage/rent payment to your utility bills. Although requiring the most effort, this method often provides the most accurate and useful results. You are not only tracking checks and credit card purchases, but also those small cash purchases that can add up over time.
