notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org Guilderland, NY - It’s been a strange weather start to the summer season but, if you’ve lived here for awhile, you know that our weather is fickle and changes by the minute. Rain or shine, your Town parks and recreational facilities are ready for your enjoyment.
be held at Orsini Park in the heart of the Village of Altamont. This summer concert series is jointly sponsored by the Altamont Free Library and Village. For both venues, just bring a blanket or chair and come out and enjoy the show.
If you are looking for a convenient local hike or outdoor activities, here are a few suggestions. At Tawasentha Park, there are over five miles of marked hiking trails in a wooded setting along and across the Normanskill by a pedestrian bridge. While at Tawasentha Park, you can enjoy picnic facilities, a newly installed playground, pavilions, tennis courts, basketball courts, and an award winning pool facility. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve also has extensive hiking and biking trails with easily accessible trailheads in the Town. Colorful descriptive trial brochures are available at Town Hall, Parks’ Office, Guilderland Library, and downloaded online at www.albanypinebush.org.
If you are looking for a local sporting event, please consider a visit to Keenholts Park in Guilderland Center which hosts the Guilderland Little League, Guilderland Travel Baseball, Guilderland Babe Ruth, and Guilderland Softball. The Park has arguably the best fields and facilities to enjoy baseball in the area. There are eight fields for Guilderland Little League and Guilderland Softball. Dutchmen Field, the home of Guilderland Babe Ruth and 13+ Travel Baseball, is a well-maintained field with lights, stadium-style seating, concession stand, picnic area, and ample parking. Please take the time to support our youngsters by catching an evening or weekend game. Information about games and facilities is available at www. guilderlandbaseball.com.

Detailed information about these and other events are available on the Preserve’s website where you can also sign-up for email updates.
House a $5,000 grant to perform interior work at the John L. Schoolcraft House, a historic home owned by the Town. The funded work includes painting and staining base and crown moldings, and installing historically accurate hardware for doors and windows. The award was sponsored by County Legislator Dennis A. Feeney.
Park, visitors will find a large panel containing a detailed map of the Village and the 26 locations where lecterns will provide historical information and items of interest about each location. Residents and visitors can traverse Village streets and visit local businesses while they learn about the Village’s past.
If you are interested in free local outdoor entertainment, please take a look at two local venues with beautiful settings. On Thursday evenings at 7:30 pm through August 10th, concerts will be held at Tawasentha Park’s Guilderland Performing Arts Center which can be reached by a pathway through the beautiful Ruth Lawlor Memorial Garden and a new rest area recently constructed as a Boy Scout Eagle project. Information about the performers for each Thursday night concert is available on the Park’s Department page on the Town website (www. townofguilderland.org) or by calling the Parks Office at 456-3150. On Tuesday evenings at 7 pm from July 11th through August 15th, concerts will
The Albany County Soil and Water District also awarded the Town with 10 pet waste disposal stations which will installed in Town parks to help with the environmentally responsible removal of pet waste. Please remember that the Town parks have a dog leash policy and that Nott Road Park has a dog park with new activities installed as a Boy Scout Eagle project.
Summer months are also a good time to consider adopting a household dog. If you have interest in adoption or have questions about wildlife and the care of animals, please call the professional employees at the Town’s Animal Shelter at 8616855.
Peter G. Barber - Town Supervisor also involved exploring potential public access points to the Reservoir for fishing and potential hiking trails around the Reservoir’s perimeter. As shown in the attached photograph, the Reservoir is a wonderful asset. Any future recreational use must be consistent with the Reservoir’s primary role as a source of drinking water for the Town and City.
On Wednesday, July 26th, at 4 pm at Orsini Park, the Village of Altamont will unveil Museum in the Streets, an innovative program that promotes The Preserve also conducts evening and weekend events, many of which take place in I am pleased to announce that Albany County walking and biking tours of the Village’s rich At Orsini the Town. DON’T MAKE IT GARAGE SALE SEASON AT YOUR HOUSE by Margaret C. Tabak
1.
Go through your home, room by room, and write down what you want.
2.
Go through your list - are these items that you want because you can continue to use them, or because they have sentiment to you (or worse) to the other person? Be reasonable. If you’ve never used the chainsaw or bread maker, why do you want it now? Once you have narrowed down your list you are ready to:
3.
Exchange lists. There are items that one person may want and not the other, so they can simply go to the person who wants them.
4.
What if both of you want the same thing?
Guilderland, NY - A few weeks ago my neighborhood had its annual garage sale. After hours of work, I was $40 richer and exponentially happier. My kid’s blow up pool? To a family with young children! Our 20 year old health rider? To someone else who will never use it. While I was thrilled to spend so much time for so little money on the home front, in my professional life no two words strike more fear in my heart: Personal property. Why? Because unless you have items of significant worth (i.e., art, high end furniture or jewelry), most property is garage sale value. That couch you bought 10 years ago at a big box commercial store? $100 on Craigslist (if you are lucky). And while the couch may have little financial worth, it’s still better to sit on at the end of the day than the floor. The distribution of personal property often involves more than worth or intrinsic value, there is sentiment, and the sense of a “win.” However, if you spend thousands of dollars fighting for garage sale value, how far ahead are you? If you are in a relationship and will be separating from your partner or spouse, the distribution of your furniture, knick knacks, pots and pans, etc. does not have to be an expensive nightmare. Here are some tips to make the process easier:
a. b. c.
Flip a coin; Sell it; Tradeoff for something else.
While these seem like easy answers, when negative emotions rule it is difficult to make sound financial decisions. You are probably noticing that I did not put an obvious choice on the list: go to Court! Like your lawyer, unless you have evidence as to the financial value, the judge has very few options. The judge can: 1.
Distribute items in kind (you get the toaster, you get the coffee maker);
2.
Ask both parties for a list. A local urban legend is that one judge took the husband’s list and gave the wife everything on it and vice versa. This shamed the couple into each giving the other what s/he asked for to start;
3.
Order it sold.
If you end up with a court ordered garage sale, you may be a lot less happy with your $40 payday than I was. It is always best to control your own destiny then end up with the Hummel figurines you never liked!

TAX PLANNING VS. TAX PREPARATION BY
DOUGLAS BAUER
Guilderland, NY - Many people focus their attention on income tax preparation at the beginning of each year, prior to the annual April 15th income tax filing deadline. While filing income tax returns in a timely manner is certainly a prudent strategy, it is often too late to engage in any effective income tax planning, as the year for which you are filing your tax return has already passed! Income tax planning should be a year-round activity. Here are some items you may wish to consider for tax year 2017: •
•
•
•
Ensure that you are on pace to make your desired level of employer-sponsored retirement plan contributions. For 2017, the maximum employee contribution amount to such plans is generally $18,000 per employee, plus an additional $6,000 for those who are age 50 or older. Additionally, many plans now offer the option to make contributions to a Roth account.
up to $3,000 per year in capital losses, in addition to washing out any realized gains, as a direct reduction in adjusted gross income. For a taxpayer in the 25% marginal federal tax bracket, a realized capital loss of $3,000 can reduce her federal tax bill by as much as $750.
Verify whether you are eligible to make a tax-deductible contribution to a Traditional IRA or a contribution to a Roth IRA. You can contribute as much as $5,500 to such an account in 2017, plus an additional $1,000 if you are at least 50 years old as of 12/31/2017.
•
Taxpayers in the 15% or lower federal marginal income tax bracket (taxable income of $37,950 or less for a single filer, or $75,900 or less for joint filers) may wish to take advantage of the 0% federal long-term capital gains rate. For example, a married couple with taxable income of $50,000 could realize up to $25,900 of long-term capital gains with no federal capital gains tax bill! However, please be aware that realizing capital gains may impact the amount of your social security which is taxable, and may impact eligibility for certain income-tested programs.
Please consult your tax preparer and/or financial advisor to determine if any of the above strategies are appropriate for your overall financial situation.
On the other hand, capital loss harvesting can be an effective income tax reduction strategy. Taxpayers are allowed to claim
Consider “bunching” or “prepaying” future charitable donations through the use of a donor-advised fund. Such a fund potentially allows a taxpayer to take an immediate income tax deduction this year for planned giving which may not occur until many years down the road.
With taxes, as in many other areas of life, a little bit of planning can go a long way. We encourage you to make tax planning a yearround activity, and not just the one hour per year you scramble to assemble your records for your tax preparer!

What Customers are Saying... Guilderland, NY - Happy 4th of July and time to celebrate!! Most of my columns have been information everyone should know about realtors, buying and selling houses and more. This column is dedicated to a few testimonials about what hiring ME would be like; you get to hear it from my clients and I get to celebrate that my clients are so happy! FROM A SELLER-5 STARS - Sold a Single Family home in 2016 for approximately $250K in Albany, NY. 5 STARS - We had a great experience selling our home with Kathy Burbank. Our house sold quickly for a great price, and Kathy Burbank was always readily available any time we had a question or concern. FROM A BUYER-5 STARS - Bought a home in 2016 in East Glenville, NY 12302. Ms. Burbank was absolutely the best to work with. She’s very professional and knowledgeable in real estate. As a first time homebuyer going into this, she was very informative, resourceful and stayed on top of things every step of the way. Great personality, easy to work with, exceptional work ethics. I worked with a prior agent and was unhappy. Ms. Burbank was referred to me by a friend who spoke of her highly. Best recommendation ever!!! FROM A SELLER - 5 STARS - Sold a Single Family home in 2016 for approximately $225K in Schenectady, NY. Kathy is very professional, has great knowledge of the market, and is an excellent communicator. She was very helpful in connecting me with various professionals needed to get the house ready for sale and went above and beyond to help facilitate the sale of house. I would highly recommend. FROM MY FORMER CAREER - I called on Kathy at the Guilderland Chamber to help me organize the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Westmere Firehouse. When I asked her to help, she took ownership of the project. The result was a terrific turnout of area VIP’s and those that are integral to this project. I can’t thank her enough for her hard work. AVOID INJURY WHILE GARDENING
By: Dr. Amanda Boccio
Guilderland, NY - Summer is finally here, and for many of us, it means sunny days spent caring for our prized vegetable and flower gardens. Just as we don’t want weeds, we don’t want to deal with the aches and pains often associated with long hours spent digging, stooping, and kneeling among the plants. Follows these tips so you can exercise your green thumb without causing strain on your back: Begin with a warm up: Gardening can turn into a strenuous workout, so it is a good idea to treat it as you would an exercise routine. A brisk 5 minute walk around the neighborhood and some stretching exercises for the arms, legs, and back will get the heart pumping, the blood flowing, and warm up the muscles and joints. Dedicating some time to a warm up will adequately prepare your body for bending to pull weeds, lifting bags of mulch, and pushing wheelbarrows. Lift correctly: While rushing to get tasks done in the garden, it is easy to forgot to use proper lifting technique. Be sure to bend from the hips and the knees, NOT from your waist. Carry objects with both hands and as close to your body as you can; over-reaching and twisting, especially if you are bending from the waist is a common mechanism for lower back injury. Remember to engage your core muscles, this stabilizes and protects your back. Proper lifting technique should be utilized regardless of how light the object may feel. When moving heavy objects over a distance, consider using a wagon to minimize lifting. Get on your hands and knees: The quadruped position, in which you have both knees, both feet, and one hand in contact with the ground (while you dig, plant or pull with your other hand) is safe, stable position for your body. Supporting yourself on your hands and knees puts much less strain on your lower back as compared to
bending at the waist while standing, or sitting cross-legged with a rounded back. Consider using knee pads for extra cushioning if kneeling in this position causes discomfort. Change positions often: Make sure to change positions every 15 to 30 minutes. Divide each task up into sections so you switch up your posture, body position, and activity to avoid the strain of repetitive motions. For example: weed one garden bed, then stand up and water it before moving on to weed the next bed. Take breaks: Every hour, take some extra time to stretch, drink water, and rest in the shade. Admittedly, pacing yourself can be difficult when we often set a goal to complete a weeklong task in our one completely free weekend. Your body will thank you for taking periodic stretch and rest breaks. Gardening is an enjoyable hobby that can benefit both physical and mental wellbeing. Following these strategies will allow you to enjoy the fruits of your labor pain free! If you have any questions about this article, please feel free to contact us at the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center at 518-869-3415. SPORTS & SPINAL WELLNESS CENTER 2021 Western Ave., Ste. 102, Albany • (518) 869-3415 Scooter is an extremely gentle, cuddly neutered two-year-old male cat. He was found hanging out in a colony with eight

other cats on the front porch of an elderly gentleman’s house. The kind gentleman fed all the cats twice a day and gave them boxes to try to stay warm in over the winter. Scooter would let all the neighbors pet him and love on him but no one took him inside to get him out of the awful weather. When you first meet Scooter, he will be a little shy and unsure. He will look to you for petting and words of encouragement. Once he knows he is safe, he will begin to knead and purr. It will take him several days to get used to a new environment. Once he is comfortable watch out!! He is very active and wants to hang out with you for play and cuddling. Scooter gets along very well with the other cats in his foster home, he loves to play, and will meet you at the door when you come home. If you aren’t available for petting he will roll over and give you his most affectionate stare hoping you will give in and give him a pat. He will want to sleep with you at night. The best home for Scooter would be one with another cat for companionship as he loves other kitties. Scooter is neutered, tested neg for FIV/felv, and is up-to-date on his vaccines. Techworks Opens New Location!
WE HAVE AN APP!
Guilderland, NY - Techworks Consulting, Inc., headquartered in Bohemia, NY, announced last week the official grand opening of their new office in Guilderland, NY. Techworks, established in 2002, by founders Christopher Coluccio and Keith Newell, is a full service technology consulting company. “The opening of our Guilderland office is yet another step on our planned growth and evolution as a company,” said CEO, Christopher Coluccio. Techworks has a strong commitment to their community and surrounding areas. They currently serve the NY metro area but have attained a global reach including clients as far as Alaska and Scotland. “This office further expands our reach in the upstate NY area, allows us to better serve the northern Connecticut market and allows us an entryway to the Massachusetts market,” said CFO, Keith Newell. Techworks offers a full suite of technology services including managed services, security solutions, infrastructure, and cloud services, just to name a few. Their mission statement is to help businesses increase productivity and get more out of the technology they invest in. Techworks specializes in solutions that safeguard and protect data and keep operations running smoothly. “Continuing our mission of growth,” said Coluccio, “we firmly stand by this important point: Your business deserves better technology and Techworks is here to deliver it.” Techworks hosted their Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on Monday, June 5, 2017. The office is located at 2050 Western Ave Suite 202, Guilderland NY, 12084. In our continuing effort to bring the library to you, we have partnered with the Upper Hudson Library System to bring you a new app called GPL Mobile. The App is free and can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or from Google Play. Simply search either store for “UHLS” and download. If you want to download the app directly from the Upper Hudson Library System website, go to http://uhls.boopsie.com. And of course, if you have any questions, just ask us. Let’s say you’re at a friend’s house and they share a book or a CD with you. Simply scan the publisher’s barcode on the back of the item and you can instantly see whether GPL or any of our 28 partner libraries has the item. One further click, and you can place a hold on the item, and you’ll get an email notification when we have placed it on the hold shelf for you. The GPL Mobile App is a new way to access library resources on a mobile device. With our app, you can quickly and easily find locations, hours, and contact info, check your library card account, request items, renew items, learn about upcoming events, access digital content, scan ISBN barcodes on books, DVDs, and CDs to see if we have you’re looking for, and so much more. What’s more, you can use the barcode wallet feature to scan library cards for each member of your family, thus making the app work for everyone in the house. While you can still use our separate Overdrive app to download ebooks and e-audiobooks, you can also download them right from GPL mobile, saving a step. The app will helpfully display available bestsellers once you click on Overdrive. You can also use the app to connect to Flipster for over 60 free digital magazines, including Vanity Fair, Rolling Stone, Field & Stream, ESPN, Vogue, Runner’s World, etc. The app also connects to Mango languages, the Gale Virtual Reference Library, and New York heritage, for a wealth of digitized historical items from around the state, including many local history items from GPL. You can also connect to Beanstack through GPL mobile. Beanstack includes tools to help you and your family discover books, keep track of your reading, and reach reading goals. The app also includes GPL’s calendar of events, so you can learn what is coming up. In an era when government agencies are increasingly partnering with other agencies to create cost-saving measures through shared services, libraries remain at the forefront of that movement. The GPL Mobile app is made possible through UHLS, our shared cost network for the 29 libraries in Albany and Rensselaer Counties. Download for free and enjoy! Guilderland, NY

Graduation! By Master Rice
Guilderland, NY - I had the pleasure of attending graduation for my school, Guilderland High School, this past weekend at the time of my writing. I wish all teachers could go; it would be so much more impactful for the students. I hope someday our district can arrange it so this can happen. It was rewarding of course because so many graduates were my math students but additionally some of the graduates, such as those posing with me below, have been my students in one form or another since grade school. Graduations are exciting because they represent a culmination of a long period of work toward achievement. More importantly they represent a new start or a beginning. There is great excitement for the graduate and what adventures of academic and life learning await and there is hope for the contribution the graduate will make to our world. For me it is the mystery of the nature and magnitude of the graduate’s future contribution that is the most amazing. More gripping than any fictitious movie or book, this is our story! As parents, teachers and members of our community we have worked so hard to help form these young adults that we now send out to make their mark on the world. The job we have done is incredibly important but the reward is this fabulous story we get to watch the unfold. Books and movies are awesome and show the power of creative human spirit, but this is real and it represents yet another example of the true meaning of the word awesome. Between my own children’s growth, the growth of the thousands that have been my students and the even greater number that we impact casually everyday, I have enough to watch, right here in front of me and it’s the best story on the planet. I am very grateful to the faculty and staff of our fine schools for their amazing effort in caring for and teaching my children. It has been an excellent ride for my family and I am exceedingly thankful. Congratulations to the class of 2017 everywhere, but most close to my heart, here in Guilderland. May your adventure be as awesome as it is to watch you experience it.

Interview with Dr. Jennifer Bashant Building Better Futures, LLC Q. How long have you been in business? A. I started Building Better Futures two years ago and was coaching parents out of my home.
New Clients Welcome
Poiema Salon and Spa 2093 Western Avenue, Guilderland
Tel: 518-961-0485
Q. Where are you located? A. I have just recently moved to 1674 Western Avenue, Guilderland near Crossgates Mall. Q. What is your email and website address? A. Our website is www.BuildingBetterFuturesLLC. com and I can also be reached by email at jenniferbashant@gmail.com
Treat yourself to the styling and coloring that has made Bea Remillard so celebrated!
Q. What hours are you open? A. We have flexible hours which include evenings in order to accommodate busy families. For those clients who live further away or who have very tight schedules, I also conduct coaching sessions via videoconferencing or conference call with one or both parents during the work day. Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. I have been an educational consultant for seven years, working with educators in many capital region schools. My work has been primarily training and coaching for teachers and administrators on reducing challenging behavior. As a social worker, I specialize in the effects of trauma, mental health challenges and poverty on students. After seeing the positive impact of this approach on even the most challenging students, I decided that I also wanted to reach out to families struggling with challenging behavior at home so I started Building Better Futures.
New Clients Welcome! HOMES • APARTMENTS • BUSINESSES
We all live differently. Let us tailor a cleaning schedule that fits your lifestyle!
Q. Are you known for anything special? A. One of the benefits of this unique approach is the strengthening of the parent-child relationship and the empowerment of both the parent and the child to confidently and effectively tackle any problem that arises. We operate from a strengths-perspective, seeking to highlight and showcase strengths in the family before examining the challenges. We do not use rewards and punishments to shape childrens’ behavior, rather we facilitate intrinsic motivation by helping children develop the cognitive skills required to meet adult expectations. In addition to individual coaching sessions, we also present workshops and webinars for parents (current offerings are listed on our website).
• Spotless home-cleaning by a lifetime Guilderland resident. I’ll make your home shine in less time!
Q. What do you love most about this business? A. I love guiding parents in the discovery that a simple shift in mindset can lead to a dramatic improvement in home life. I am able to share some of the insight I have gained as a parent of three children, along with a synthesis of the most current research on behavior and neuroscience. I love connecting with people, I am humbled by families’ trust in me, and I am fortunate to be able to help make life less stressful for parents and children. Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. If you are struggling with a child’s behavior at home and nothing you are doing is working, feel free to reach out to me. I am happy to talk with you, listen to what is happening in your family, then share more about my approach so you can decide if this is something you’d like to pursue.

Exciting News! I am pleased to announce that I have recently transferred my license to RealtyUSA, the largest independent real estate company in the Capital District and the 3rd largest in the nation*. Through RealtyUSA, I am now able to offer you even more resources to help you achieve your real estate dreams, including: • Full service, in-house marketing that will allow me to create even better custom pieces to market your home, or to help you find the home of your dreams. • Membership in the Homes of Distinction program, offering enhanced marketing opportunities for higher priced homes. • 100% Money Back Guarantee Program** - offering Buyers and Sellers peace of mind that RealtyUSA will stand behind the value of the home. • Leads Network Program - meaning that all inquiries on your listing from Zillow, Trulia or Realtor.com, will be forwarded directly to me as your listing agent, so I can answer all questions accurately and with first-hand knowledge of your home. • Attentive, professional, results-driven service. My commitment to my clients remains my top priority. The real estate marketplace is constantly changing and always busy, especially here in Guilderland. I am proud to live and work here - I know this market, and I love selling real estate here. I also enjoy supporting the community. To date I have donated $100 from every closing to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, a total of $2,400 so far - and still counting! If you, or anyone you know, is thinking about buying or selling a home, call, text or email me any time for the real estate results you’re looking for.
I look forward to hearing from you! ~ Kellie
