notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org

Guilderland, NY- In most years, June acts as a sort of a bridge from spring until summer, but this seems to have been one of those years where we sort of went from winter straight to summer, without the benefit of much springtime. It sometimes happens that way here in Upstate New York! This is the time of year when there are lots of things going on here in Guilderland, and `one item that is significant for many of our local families is planning what childrens’ activities best suit our summer schedules. We still have openings available in many of our summer recreation programs, both the half-day day camp sessions and the extended-day sports and enrichment camps. Many of these programs will be completely full by the end of the school year, so please be sure to check www.guilderlandrec. com for more information and on-line registration, or call the Guilderland Parks and Recreation Office at 4563150 if you have questions about these programs. The 5th annual MudMania event will be held at Tawasentha Park on Sunday, June 21. This will be a family-friendly Fathers’ Day celebration that will focus on fun, and of course on plenty of mud! There will be five waves of runners setting out to brave the course, starting with a Kids’ Run at 10:00 A.M., with a barbecue after the race. You can register on-line, or download a registration form, at www.tawasenthamudmania.com. The start of the season for corporate and charity outings and for golf leagues at Western Turnpike Golf Course has made the course a busy place at certain times, but there are still plenty of tee times available for a friendly round of golf. Please remember that Guilderland residents with a Town I.D. always enjoy discounted greens fees. Call the Pro Shop at 456-0786 to check on course conditions, to ask about special promotions, or to book a tee time. This summer’s concert season at the Guilderland Performing Arts Center at Tawasentha Park will kick off with the annual “Nervosity” concert featuring area high school bands at 6 P.M. on Friday, June 19. The 36th annual Thursday evening concert series resumes on Thursday, June 25, with a performance by 4

the Guilderland Town Band. The Thursday evening series features performances from a variety of musical genres. All Thursday performances are at 7:30 P.M. Bring a blanket or a lawn chair and enjoy some music under the stars at beautiful Tawasentha Park. A lot of residents enjoy allowing their dogs to do a little off-leash running, especially in the nicer weather. That’s the reason why the Town created a separate fenced dog park at our Nott Road Park facility. The dog park consists of over an acre of space where your properly licensed dog can roam free and socialize with other animals. An annual tag is available at the Town Clerk’s office for a nominal fee, which allows unlimited access to the facility. Dogs with a current license are eligible for these dog park tags. Please call the Town Clerk’s office at 4561980, extension 1024, for information on dog licensing and dog park tags. Sidewalk installation continues in two areas of Guilderland in June. The sidewalks on Route 146 in Guilderland Center will be completed during June. The project on Western Avenue, which is significantly larger in scope, will continue into the fall. Both of these projects will make Guilderland a much more pedestrian-friendly community, and we are glad to see them progressing. We ask that everyone be understanding and courteous as we experience some temporary lane closures and accompanying inconvenience during the installation process. I hope that the start of the summer season is enjoyable for all of our residents. Please take care as you travel about the Town, and let’s all enjoy this wonderful time of year safely.

Guilderland, NY- Sometimes we’re asked what it means when we say we provide comprehensive dental care for our patients. It’s a great question and one worth discussing. An additional important piece of our commitment to comprehensive care is that we view each patient as a unique, whole person. We look at your mouth being connected to , influenced by and influencing your whole body. Factors such as your general health, medications you may take, your state of nutrition, problems with stress from work or life, as well as your own self-care habits are all important in understanding what is happening with your oral health. Nothing in the human body exists or functions in isolation. In comprehensive care, we look at the mouth as more than teeth and gums-we include the soft tissues of the surrounding oral cavity and the muscles used for chewing and movement, including those around the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). The muscles that help create your bite or occlusion are often a source of problems that show up as jaw pain, neck or head aches, tooth wear and stress, and failure of dental restorations which can affect the health of your gums and jaw bones.

Our initial COMPREHENSIVE exam includes: • Thorough review of your medical and dental history. • A visual oral cancer screening and using the Velscope to examine the soft tissues. • A series of diagnostic X-rays that provide a comprehensive view of your teeth and condition of your bones. • A periodontal examination, which includes a thorough screening and assessment of your gums – to check for any signs of periodontal (gum) disease. • An occlusal exam, to check for bite problems (underbite, overbite, crossbite), worn teeth, and jaw problems, such as TMJ. • A meticulous tooth-by-tooth check using a microscope to identify cavities, examine existing restorations and the current condition of each. • Additionally, photos are taken of all of your teeth, and Dr. Oshins will personally sit down with you and review the findings with you.

HAPPY FEET FOR THE SUMMER By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling Guilderland, NY - Are your feet ready for summer? With the beautiful weather we have had lately I’m sure you have treated your little piggy’s to some fresh warm sunshine or a new pedicure. But are they ready for a long hike, a day pounding the pavement at the fair or outdoor festival? With the change of seasons also comes a change in footwear. This time of year the sandals and flip flops are flying off the shelves. Did you know that wearing the wrong type of footwear during summer activities can lead to a common foot condition call plantar fasciitis? Plantar Fasciitis is classically described as sharp pain on the bottom of your foot either by your heel or in the middle of your arch. It is especially sharp those first few steps out of bed in the morning. The pain gradually feels a little better as you get moving but then can be tender again after sitting for a period of time. What causes Plantar Fasciitis? Most people think it starts from a bone spur on the bottom of your heel. In reality, it most often begins from calf muscles that are too tight and then it is aggrevated by wearing shoes with little support or a change in exercise routine such as running hills or jumping. It can also be caused by foot mechanics that are described as either too flat or too high of an arch. Left untreated, it can lead to other joint pain in the knees, hips and low back. This is due to altered walking mechanics because the individual is trying to avoid stepping on the painful foot. When we transition from winter shoes where our entire foot is covered and start to wear a pair a flip flops or sandals, there can

be some initial strain on your feet and legs. Many summer shoes lack adequate support for spending longs days outdoors. Flip flops typically have the least amount of foot support and are best worn for a short duration such as a quick trip to the store or when they need to be removed frequently such as going to the beach or the pool. Strap type sandals with good arch support are better for longer walking trips or activities. Better shoes help to prevent strain on the intrinsic foot muscles, legs and hips. Over the years, I have treated many cases of plantar fasciitis with great success. Treatments typically include myofascial release, instrument assisted soft tissue techniques, cold laser, adjustments to misaligned joints, arch strengthening exercises, stretches and lastly orthotics if indicated. I will almost always use various taping techniques to see if it alleviates the pain and if it works, then the patient will most likely benefit from a different type of shoe or orthotics. Depending on the duration of the injury, night splints have also been helpful.

message from the

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

2050 Western Ave, Suite 201, Guilderland, NY 12084 (518) 456-6611 • www.guilderlandchamber.com Guilderland, NY - Health and wellness is a topic that is almost everywhere these days. But how many of us, businesses included, are actually doing something about it? There are pros on both the employee and employer side to things when it comes to keeping the workplace wellness ready. In fact, in workplaces where managers and owners implement programs and encourage their employees to take part, there have been reductions on the number of sick days employees take, up to a 28% reduction in all! And 30% less in workers comp and disability claims. The morale at these places is usually higher and more pleasant and the company and overall productivity has been shown to be on an increase. Workers like feeling appreciated and that they are cared for. It doesn’t always have to involve money either. This past year at the chamber we have heard of so many of our members being stressed to the point of hospitalization. Our society today is now anxiety and depression ridden and this can cause many stress induced illnesses both in the physical and mental capacities. Stress can come in many ways from work, to personal, to finances, deadlines, and other long and short term worries. These stresses tend to spill over into our workplace environment where we may be not performing our best due to pent up anxieties.

at CrossFit Aevitas

This is why we have decided to implement a health and wellness initiative for our members. We want to get the message across that taking care of your employees and yourself will have a tremendous impact on the way you do business and are able to deal with life in general. There are so many options to bring such a program into our workplace no matter how big or how small. Our local area has many services and service professionals that you can work with to help ease the stress of your staff. We are encouraging employees bring in these experts to their offices to show them how to sit correctly at their desk and relief tension in their upper back, or maybe your workplace can offer to have a massager therapist come in every quarter. Another option is giving free or reduced gym memberships as part of the company benefit package or a monthly food co-op from local farms to help encourage physical activity and healthy eating. Even if your budget for something like this is at zero, there are still many options such as offering water and healthy snacks at the office, or taking a staff day out to the local park to encourage walking, running, playing, or just sitting and relaxing, or even by making one day of the week where employees are encourage to take a ½ hour or a full hour to take a walk, get caught up on personal business, or by letting them go work out. We all have to make sacrifices, and we are all under tremendous amounts of stress. Why not help your staff and yourself by taking just a little bit of time in order to help increase your productivity, morale, and by letting your employees know you are there for them? I can 12

BLACKBELT TESTING AT GMA Guilderland, NY - On May 16 we conducted our spring promotion test for 8 junior blackbelts and one Senior blackbelt. Therefore I dedicate this month’s article space to honor their accomplishment. Attaining blackbelt is an awesome experience that requires years of training. The accomplishment and journey are unique experiences that contain lessons in life and character as well as physical development. All of these students submitted personal essays indicating the impact that the study of Taekwondo has had on their lives. All were excellent and indicate a deeper understanding of the meaning of becoming a blackbelt than the average person may suspect. At GMA character plays the largest role in our training and these students represent the best in character for their future success and for our community.

Make Sunglasses a Priority This Summer Guilderland, NY - Sunglasses are extremely important part of preserving your eye health. More than 22 million Americans suffer from cataracts and age-related macular degenera on (AMD). Exposure to ultra-violet light increases your risk of both. Cataracts can require costly surgery and me off of work, while current treatment op ons for AMD are limited. The sun in addi on to visible light, gives off ultraviolet radia on. This radia on is divided into three types: UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. The earth’s ozone layer absorbs UV-C radia on, leaving sunglasses to protect your eyes against UV-A and UV-B rays. You should be aware that the sun’s damaging effects are a concern yearround regardless if you are skiing moguls in the winter or sinking a 30foot pu in the summer. You should also know that the effects of UV radia on are cumula ve, so it’s important to develop good protec on habits early in life. Dermatologists have done a great job of educa ng us

on the importance of protec ng our skin from the suns harmful rays. It only makes sense that we should then also use sunglasses to protect our eyes from those same harmful rays. Essen ally, sunglasses are like sunscreen for your eyes. Armed with the right informa on, you will be able to look cool and stylish and s ll protect your vision and overall eye health. For op mum protec on sunglasses should: • block 99-100 percent of both UV-A and UV-B • block out 75-90 percent of visible light especially in the spectrum of blue light • have lenses that are perfectly matched in color, free of distor on and imperfec on and be made of a durable light-weight impact resistant material like polycarbonate Be sure to stop into Vaughn Vision, where you are sure to find the right sunglass and protec on for whatever outdoor ac vity you will be enjoying this summer.

from CrossFit Aevitas

1 Charles Blvd., Guilderland, NY (518) 703-6010 • www.crossfitaevitas.com

What is CrossFit? It all started in a garage-style gym in Santa Cruz, CA when founder Greg Glassman got fed up with the standard model of fitness. Fast-forward two decades later and CrossFit has become the largest fitness chain in the world with over 10,000 affiliates, or “boxes” as they are commonly referred to. CrossFit has even found a way to burpee right into your living room, if you happen to be scrolling by ESPN and catch a glimpse of The CrossFit Games.

So, what exactly is CrossFit and why has it become so popular? CrossFit is fundamentally a strength and conditioning methodology that focuses on using constantly varied, functional movements performed at high intensity to achieve positive adaptations that result in performance gains. Wait...what? Constantly Varied - The varied aspect of CrossFit helps people battle the training boredom associated with doing the same exercises and workouts over and over. Every single day you get a completely different workout. It also keeps your body constantly guessing so you can be better prepared for the varied physical demands that you encounter in your daily life. Functional Movements - We use functional movements because we believe you should be training for life. If the movements you are training with don’t translate to more practical strength, why bother? We do A LOT of squatting in CrossFit to build leg/hip/core strength. Many of the movements often involve holding onto an implement (barbell, kettlebell, dumbbell, pull-up bar) which builds grip and pulling strength. We highly value balance and agility because of their practical applications. We also like to develop explosive power production because expressing power is what gives us intensity and with intensity comes RESULTS! High Intensity - Each day we have a “WOD”, or Workout Of the Day. WODs are typically between 10-20 minutes in duration. WODs are where the intensity happens. We believe that intensity is what breeds performance gains, but it must be employed safely and responsibly. This is why we spend most of the hour warming you up and going through our movement prep, instruction and drills.

Is CrossFit for you? If you can walk through our doors, sit down on a chair, get yourself out of bed, then CrossFit can be for you! All of our workouts are “scalable”. Scaling is a word we use almost as much as burpee. It is the ability of our experienced coaches to take any workout and tailor it to your ability. Can’t do pull-ups? We do ring rows. Can’t do push-ups? We elevate the pushing surface to make it easier. We believe CrossFit is infinitely scalable for all. That being said, we can’t just toss you into our intermediate level classes and hope you float. All of our new members must go through a 4 week, entry-level CrossFit ABC program that is designed to build a solid foundation for future success in CrossFit and in life. If you’re interested in more information, visit www.crossfitaevitas.com or stop into the upcoming OPEN HOUSE on Friday, June 26th from 9AM-7PM.

Chad & Karen Southwick are co-owners and head coaches at CrossFit Aevitas. The couple met while at Clarkson University where they received Mechanical Engineering degrees. They both went on to work for several years at GE. Chad recently left GE to pursue his passion and run CrossFit Aevitas full time. Since moving to Guilderland, Chad and Karen have become dedicated fitness professionals striving to help people become more efficient beings. OurTowneGUILDERLAND.com

from the

GUILDERLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY 2228 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 456-2400 • www.guilpl.org

From the Director… GreeƟngs, fellow ciƟzens of Guilderland My first order of business is to thank you from the bo om of my heart for approving our budget in the elec on of May 19th. The Finance Commi ee of our board, along with myself, Assistant Director Margaret Garre , and Fiscal Officer Dan Greendale worked many hours over the first four months of the year to cra the budget. We sought to balance the needs of the library and its many thousands of Guilderland users with the reali es that all taxpayers are cau ous in approving spending plans that are, a er all, coming out of their tax bills. We believe we struck that balance well, and will be able to improve customer service and sa sfac on while staying below the two percent tax cap. We also feel that we are s ll holding the line on all spending in order to save money to address the nearly 25-year-old building’s infrastructure needs including the eventual replacement of the roof, upda ng of the ligh ng system, and con nued investment in the aging HVAC system. We have reduced several expense categories, including achieving a drama c fi y percent reduc on in energy costs by purchasing through alterna ve suppliers. I was thrilled that, although the number of voters was almost exactly the same as last year, the number of voters who said “yes” at the ballot box went up by six percent, and correspondingly, the number of “no” voters was down by the same amount. This means that we were be er at fulfilling your needs this year than the year before, and ge ng be er is always our goal! While I am certainly pleased with the fact that 1,696 voters (65.8%) approved our plan, I am somewhat chastened to read that 881 ci zens of Guilderland, (34.2%), voted against our budget.

Frankly, I would like to know why. So, if you cast a “no” vote, I would like to invite you to chat with me about your dissa sfac on with what we are doing. Feel free to call me at 518-456-2400 (x113), or to email me at Wilest@guilpl.org. Maybe you’ve had a bad experience here in the past, or maybe you think the library doesn’t provide good value for your tax dollar. Maybe there is another reason. But un l I know why you voted no, there is nothing I can do to fix whatever you dislike about the budget. The library is a public trust that exists to serve the people of Guilderland, and knowing why you voted no would help us to get be er at what we are chartered to do. Coincidentally, we are also engaged in a long-range planning process, and as part of that, we are doing a survey of Guilderland residents to get your opinions of the library—and what it can do be er. To take the survey, please go to the Library’s website – www.guilpl.org – and click on the “Tell GPL!” graphic that appears in the middle of the screen. The survey takes less than three minutes, and it gives you ample opportuni es to make comments, should you choose to. The survey closes July 15, but I encourage you to take it at your earliest convenience. And we want to hear from everyone! Each member of your household is eligible to complete the survey. If you choose to include your name, phone number, and email address, your name will be entered in a random drawing for a chance to win a gi card from a Guilderland business. Whether you voted yes or no, thank you for caring enough about your community to go out and vote. It is our most valuable right as ci zens, in my book! And as always, if you can give us feedback that will help make us be er, I want to hear from you! Thanks, Tim

Her owner abandoned her over the winter and a kind neighbor was feeding her and giving her a warm place to sleep at night. Although she was left behind Preena’s personality is 100% gentle and loving. She will run to you when you come in the room and want to jump into your lap for petting and purring. She likes to cuddle and sleep on your lap or bed. She will meet you at the door when you come home. Preena gets along well w/ the other kitties in her foster home. She loves human companionship and family activities. She likes to interact and will look to you for some sweet words of love. Preena has a precious way to let you know when her food bowl is empty or when she thinks it’s empty. Preena is spayed, up-to-date on her vaccines and has tested negative for FIV/Felv. The best home for her will be indoor only. TRASH TALK by Vince Coppola, owner of Scrapster LLC, Scrap & Junk Removal Service

Spring Cleaning Con nues as Summer Approaches!

Emergencies POISON CONTROL

Finally some warm weather. The best thing about this past winter is that if now every single day was 40 degrees out, raining and windy, I’d be like “Wow, this weather is totally awesome!” It is just that perfect me of year, not too hot, not too cold, and WE ALL need to take advantage of it before we start gearing up to curse the upcoming humidity! Yeah, you almost forgot about that, right, back when you were pulling icicles out of your nose every 5 minutes. So here is the plan…

Ambulances: Voorheesville Area Western Turnpike Rescue Squad - Centre Drive Western Turnpike Rescue Squad - Carman Road

At Scrapster we have expanded our focus (is that actually possible? Yes!) on Junk Removal. We have found our niche locally. Our reputa on for fair pricing and great service is growing, thanks to our customers and an increasing amount of referrals. A big advantage is that we separate out scrap metal and appliances don’t typically don’t charge for that, which really can keep costs low on your clean out project.

One of this month’s themes is Home Safety. Look around your home-do you see any of the following? • Heavy refrigerators or other large appliances in a basement or garage that are not easy to move. • Gas grills, old propane cylinders or empty metal gas cans. • Rusty metal objects with sharp edges. • Lawn mowers, lawn tractors or snow blowers star ng to leak gas or oil. • Water heater or oil tanks in danger of rus ng through and causing water or property damage. • Broken metal chairs that someone might accidentally sit on. • Bikes or scooters with missing parts, bad brakes or flat res. • Le over yard debris you need to remove before having problems with animals or if you are planning on selling or ren ng a property. • Too many items stacked against a wall or near fire exits that represent a hazard for small children playing nearby. As a scrap metal recycler we operate 100% to make sure appliances and other metal items we pick up are broken down correctly into basic components (wire, motors, etc.) for more effec ve re-use. We also do the same type of separa on when we do clean outs, which involves dona ng items such as clothing, toys and some furniture, while separa ng cardboard, metal, magazines, etc. so they can all be recycled properly.
