FUN IN THE SUN! by Margaret Tabak

Guilderland, NY - Who doesn’t enjoy a vacation? Whether it’s a staycation, trip to the mountains or beach, visiting with family, we all look forward to it. When a family is apart, vacations can become a tug of war, leaving you so emotionally exhausted you wish you had just stayed at work. How do you avoid it? Plan Ahead- If you have an agreement, make sure you have provided for vacation time. Your agreement should also mirror what is available to you. If you have a job that provides for four (4) weeks of vacation that you want to spend with your children, don’t agree to one week. However, what’s good for the goose is good for the gander. In other words, if you want 2, 3, 4 weeks, the other parent should be entitled to the same period of time. Travelling Across Borders- If you are travelling to another country you will need a passport for your child. You may also need a letter from the other parent giving consent. Check the Federal State Department website for more information. As you may need cooperation and assistance from the other parent, you should have a provision in your agreement that requires each of you to cooperate with international travel. In addition, plan ahead. It does not help you to need documentation signed if the other parent is unavailable. Further, if they are unwilling to cooperate you need provide sufficient time to take the matter to court. Communication- Parents will frequently withhold information from each other as to where they are going, staying, etc. Keep in mind that once your children are over the age of 2 they will probably tell the other parent, so why hide it? Further, do you want to know where your child is every night? If so, the other parent probably feels the same way. However, if your ex tells you he is taking the children to Timbuctoo, a nasty response such as “happy you have the money” “enjoy your trip with your **# girlfriend”, etc. will not engender better and more disclosure in the future. Notification- Your agreement should provide that you notify each other of vacation plans by a certain date or a certain time period before you take the time. If it does not, notify the other person as soon as you know so plans don’t conflict. Another suggestion is a “coin flip” conflict resolution. For example, if Mom and Dad both want the same week, in odd years Mom picks and in even years Dad picks. This way, a decision is easily reached. Special Occasions- Your former brother –in-law is getting married at the bottom of the Grand Canyon on a certain date and you wanted to spend that week at your backyard pool with Junior. Can you pick another week? If there is a once in a lifetime opportunity for your child, and this is a special occasion for [the other side of ] the family, is there a [good] reason Junior can’t go? What is best for Junior?

TAXATION OF CASINO GAMBLING WINNINGS AND LOSSES BY

DANIEL C. ERTEL, CPA

Guilderland, NY

- In light of the recently-opened Rivers

Casino & Resort in Schenectady, NY, we thought we’d take the opportunity to remind taxpayers of their obligations and opportunities as it relates to recreational gambling activities. Gambling winnings are reported on the first page of your federal income tax return and added to your other income (wages, dividends, interest, pensions, etc.) to determine your total income. However, gambling losses are reported on Schedule A of your federal income tax return as a miscellaneous itemized deduction. As noted, the amount of this deduction is limited to your gambling winnings and is only deductible if you itemize your deductions on Schedule A. If you do not have enough personal deductions to itemize and claim the standard deduction, then your gambling winnings are taxable in full with no offsetting loss deduction. One may conclude that if one has gambling losses equal to gambling winnings, and itemizes deductions, that there is a zero income tax impact. Unfortunately, there are several tax benefits that are affected by total income which can be reduced as total income rises. These include the child tax credit, medical deductions, passive real estate losses, itemized deductions, personal exemptions, and college tax credits, as well as increased taxable portion on social security income. So, even if your gambling losses zero out your gambling income, the result of no gambling net income can, in some cases, increase one’s income tax burden. The IRS is notified if you win big, as because the casino will give you (and IRS) a Form W-2G when you win $1,200 or more at slots or bingo or $1,500 or more at keno, net of your bet. The tax rule for claiming deductions is the requirement that you keep adequate books and records. This rule includes the deduction for gambling losses. The easiest way to meet this rule is to use a player card at the casino. This puts your gambling winnings and losses into the casino’s computer and often will generate a report from the casino at end of year summarizing your gambling activities. Otherwise, keep an accurate diary with evidence of your gambling winnings and losses; including date and type of wager, name and address of casino, names of persons present, if any, and amounts won or lost.

HIP, HIP, HOORAY! By: Dr. Amanda Boccio Guilderland, NY -The hip is one of the body’s largest and most complex joints. Whether you are deadlifting at the gym, bending to reach into your bottom cabinet drawer, salsa dancing or hula hooping, you bet the hip joint is involved in the movement! It is a ball and socket joint formed by the articulation of the femoral head (top of the thigh bone) with the acetabulum of the pelvis. The shape of the hip joint allows for a wide range of motion in all planes, but it is inherently strong and stable due to the support of thick musculature, tendons, ligaments and a capsule. Being a primary weight-bearing joint, the hip is prone to degenerative changes over time and a multitude of injuries caused by repetitive movements (or lack of proper movement!) When determining the cause of hip pain or discomfort, it is very important to identify where the symptoms are located. Many of us say “hip” when in fact we may point to the groin, buttocks, lower back or sacroiliac area. The following are some common causes of hip pain. Osteoarthritis of the hip joint is a degenerative “wear and tear” condition that affects individuals who are middle aged and older. This condition typically occurs slowly over time. Degenerative osteoarthritis of the hip joint is classified by pain and stiffness, particularly worse in the morning or after long periods of sitting or resting. Arthritis pain may radiate from the hip to the buttock, groin or knee. Those affected will notice a decrease in their normal range of motion, particularly with turning the thigh and leg in, and with extending the thigh backward. Stiffness, lack of range of motion, and pain may make activities that involve bending, squatting or walking difficult. Hip Tendonitis/Bursitis: Pinpoint tenderness and swelling localized over the greater trochanter, the bony point on the outside of the hip, are classic signs of bursitis. A bursa is a fluid filled sack that acts as a gliding surface to limit the amount of friction between different body tissues. In individuals with tight hip muscles or a tight IT Band, repetitive activities such as walking, biking or running may cause excessive friction of the bursa between the bony trochanter of the hip and taut tendons and fascia. Over time, this causes irritation, inflammation and pain. Sleeping on the affected hip, getting up from a chair after prolonged sitting, and repetitive walking, stair climbing or squatting, aggravates pain caused by an inflamed bursa. Chronic inflammation of the bursa may cause “snapping hip syndrome,” a condition where a painless, audible click is heard when the IT band passes over the greater trochanter during hip motion. Tight Hip Flexors: A sedentary lifestyle, or job that requires long hours of sitting at a desk inevitably causes a lot of tension of the muscles at the front of the hip and groin, because the hip is locked into a flexed position. The iliopsoas muscle is a primary hip flexor that originates in the lower back, lies deep in the abdomen, and crosses the front of the hip into the groin where it attaches to the thigh bone. Knots or triggers points in this muscle caused by chronic tension in the muscle from sitting for long periods can cause pain in the front of the hip, groin, SI joint area and lower back. Individuals with chronically tight hip flexor muscles may be at increased risk of straining this muscle during vigorous exercise or repetitive movements especially if they do not warm up properly prior to beginning workouts, or ramping up exercise intensity too much, too quickly. Keep your hip flexors loose by trying this stretch: Kneel with one knee on the floor and the other in front of you in a lunge position. While keeping your lower back straight, slowly shift your weight forward to the front foot until a gentle stretch is felt at the front of the kneeling leg. Hold for 30-60 seconds and alternate sides. Your hips are big, strong joints. Take care of them so you can move and dance for a lifetime! After we complete this course, I will be implementing a structured system in my practice to identify, diagnose and treat some of the most important and potent contributors to inflammation specific to dentistry and collaborate with our patient’s physician(s) to manage these key elements with the hopes of reducing any further barriers for overall systemic health.

Dutchmen Bowling Wins Sectionals By Master Rice Guilderland, NY - For the first time in decades, our Dutchmen bowling team will represent Section 2 at the New York State championships on March 4. This is a huge achievement and so awesome for our school. Congratulations to all players and coaches! So, as you can see, this month events have conspired to bring me back to bowling and our local lanes right down the street from Guilderland Martial Arts, Town-n-Country. We spend a lot of quality time there with our students and it is the home alley for the GHS bowling team. I was just there with 10 students during our winter recess camp having our usual bowling and great pizza fun. I was speaking with Jack, the owner and a community member of great character. He explained just how happy he was for our bowling team and their success. He has done a lot for many of the players, the team and the sport over the years. He was also the second person that explained that despite challenging times during the Section 2 championship, the team demonstrated excellent character and positive attitude and that he felt some of it was related to participation in other sports, particularly football. This is the perfect opportunity to remind you that the great character we learn throughout our lives in sports such as bowling, football and martial arts helps us become successful in all other aspects of our lives. It was quite satisfying to realize that Mete had a role in applying his martial arts and football character to a situation where positive attitude and perseverance were necessary to help keep the team’s focus and power through to victory. For years Mete has been performing under pressure at Taekwondo tournaments and football games where precision, discipline and focus under duress are necessary. This type of experience among all of the players of the bowling team allowed them to come together and come back to quiet a very active opponent crowd. I do not know all of the players on the team well, but I do know that in the picture above, three have studied taekwondo with me, two of those are Blackbelts and two are football players. This new lesson of perseverance will contribute to the future success of all of these players and serves as a lesson for us all that positive attitude is the key to success, especially under duress. It also reminds us that sports and competition matter very much to the development of great character for our children! My congratulation once again to the bowling team and my colleague Coach Marino on their success, and I wish you the best of positive attitude and success at States!

Why Do I Need a Whole House Humidifier? There are many reasons you may or may not want a humidifier in your home. A whole home humidifier increases the comfort level in your home and it can decrease your annual energy cost. The humidity level in your home actually causes you to use less heat. Having air that is humidified to the correct level will decrease your need for heat from your furnace, you can actually turn down your thermostat. The more moist the air is the warmer you feel. A humidifier also will: • Soothes your cold and flu symptoms by irrigating you nasal passages and throat and bronchial tubes. • Moisturizes your skin. • Reduces snoring. • Protect your furniture and wooden instruments from cracking in low humidity.

Serving the entire Capital Region for over 17 years! All phases of painting | interior/exterior | residential/commercial With over 20 years of experience, George W. Rozell III strives to always provide the best in quality and customer service. At the age of 15, he began learning the painting trade during his summer vacations by working with his father. Drawing from his father’s 35 years of painting experience, not only was he taught proper techniques and skills, but also the value of doing the job right the first time. In 1999, at the age of 21, George W. Rozell Painting was established when George decided to go into business for himself. Since that time, hard work, pride, and a strong work ethic have enabled him to grow his business and continue to be successful. His business currently includes five employees who each have many years of painting experience. This small business approach allows him to be present on his job sites and ensure high quality craftsmanship and client satisfaction.

S

Services available throughout the Capital Region include, but are not limited to, interior and exterior painting, new construction, wallpaper removal, deck staining, and power washing. With 85% of their work being residential, most referrals are word of mouth from previous customers. Local commercial clients include Sunset Bowling Alley, 99 Restaurant, Carpet Warehouse, and various retail stores in Colonie Center. George maintains a close working relationship with local paint stores, which makes it possible for him to remain current on the latest products on the market and offer the best to his customers. Maintaining an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau, George is strongly focused on providing high quality service and meeting every customer’s needs. There is no job too big or small for his business, and the same attention to detail will be given to all clients. He sums up his business motto as this, and feels it is the reason for his continued success. “I don’t just want to do business with you, I want to do business with everyone you know. I want every customer to feel confident referring me to their family and friends because of their satisfaction with my service.”

March 2017 - March into the Sale Guilderland, NY - Selling Green-Go Self-Sufficient homes: Two concepts that with a few of the ideas below becomes one great way to improve the value of your home! We all know MANY people are looking for ways to be more environmentally friendly, but did you also know there are many people in the world concerned about being too dependent on the power grid, gas and oil, and more? A home with some additions below is more marketable to them! •

Tankless Water Heater-Install this space, time and energy saver the next time you need a hot water heater -or at least wrap your current heater in a thermal blanket made for hot water heaters.

Wood/Pellet Stoves supplement heat and make you self-sufficient in an emergency power outage. Pellet stoves are slightly more expensive but are also green

Flooring-Add Bamboo, Cork, or any Eco-Friendly Wood Flooring, there are tons of options now!

Solar Roof Panels can be installed with different arrangements for either free panels but the company gets the energy, or bought outright and you sell the energy.

Cool Roofs use new technology and engineering on the materials to lower cooling costs in warm places.

Reclaimed Wood can be expensive but you can also go to salvage yards, craigslist or even the dump, and re-use perfectly good wood for so many projects.

Dual Pane Windows-sorry folks but new windows rank up there as a top home improvement well worth your investment….take the plunge!

Programmable Thermostat-This is probably the easiest thing you can do in your house to save money-program it to adjust heating and cooling for when you are not home or sleeping.

Low VOC Paint and Carpet-You can absolutely buy low VOC (volatile organic compound) paint and carpet for home improvement projects pretty much anywhere, and these are good for you, good for the environment, and good for your home value!

Kathy Burbank is with CM Fox Real Estate- a locally owned and run company with deep ties to the Guilderland Community. The company now has approximately 50 realtors; most who also live locally. CM Fox Charity has 2 charity events a year; and Kathy is actively involved in them.

From the Director: As I write this, the weather is so unseasonably warm that readers may be thinking ahead to Spring—which is statistically a little ways off, but seems to have arrived, at least this week. With Spring, thoughts turn to the subject of this special issue, home improvement. Don’t forget your library as a resource for all sorts of helpful books and videos on home improvement and related concepts, like buying a home, selling one, flipping homes, renovating, etc. “Whether you want to learn how to build a shed, add a deck, tile a bathroom, or frame a window, we’ve got materials to help! You can check out books and even DVDs that demonstrate step-bystep instructions for many of your home improvement projects. We also have recent materials about renewable energy and going solar, which is a growing trend in the Capital District. Don’t forget to look at the home improvement titles on our “oversize” shelves, too,” writes Maria Buhl, head of Programming and Public Services here at GPL. From DVDs of “this Old House,” to “plumbing For Dummies, to my own favorite title “Popular Mechanics: When Duct Tape Just Isn’t Enough,” we’ve got you covered for all your home improvement needs. And a couple of tips for online searching, in case they’ve never crossed your mind. Almost any small, or even large, home repair, has helpful, short, explanatory videos posted on youtube. I used this recently to learn how to fix a leak below my kitchen sink. Another tip is that the web is a great place to look for manuals to home appliances and other devices that you may have lost. For example, I inherited a weedwacker, and was able to go online to find out how to change the oil on this model. Sometimes I find a manual and print out just the pages that I will need, such as how to replace the water filter on my refrigerator. Searching for information has truly never been easier. Take a break from those home improvement projects and join us at the rescheduled Cliff Brucker and Full Circle jazz concert on SATURDAY March 18th at 3 p.m. Cliff Brucker, jazz drummer and pianist, and his exceptional sextet Full Circle, will perform classic jazz standards and original compositions. Full Circle includes Leo Russo, tenor and alto sax; Larry Ham, piano; Dylan Canterbury, trumpet and flugelhorn; Mike Novakowski, guitar; Otto Gardner, bass. Individually, the six musicians have performed with both local and legendary jazz artists; together, they recently recorded the eponymous album, “Full Circle,” showcasing the uplifting swing and phrasing of saxophonist Leo Russo -- “an exceptional and satisfying recording,” notes one jazz reviewer. Back to the home though, some improvements are not just structural. We also have materials on optimizing storage and home organization. Readers interested in that subject can join us at “Paper, Paper, Paper! Get Organized with Jordana Turcotte,” on Tuesday, march 28th, at 6:30 p.m. (Visit our website at www.guilpl.org to register) Professional organizer Jordana Turcotte will discuss what to keep, what to throw out, and how to set up an effective to system to manage it all. If every horizontal surface is covered, bills are lost or not paid, and you can’t find things when you need them, this class -- offered through CDPHP -- is for you!

www.guilderhaven.org Arabella is a beautiful gentle little girl w/ a big heart and a great fur coat that has helped keep her warm the last six months. She was found in the inner-city trying to survive with no real food source. Her shelter was a boarded-up abandoned house with a small hole for her to get inside. A taxi-cab driver called us when he saw her on a very frigid night trying to find something to eat in the garbage put at the curb for trash day. Now that she is indoors and knows she is safe and warm she is quickly learning to trust again. Arabella wants is to be loved and cuddled. She is very gentle and sweet and curious. There is nothing to her body size right now. She is a bag of bones but she is very busy catching up on her food.

URGENT need for barn homes Six cats who have been living in an abandoned garage in Schenectady have lost their forever home as the building is being torn down. We are in need of forever barn homes to relocate the kitties. The cats are fully vetted including spay/neuter and vaccines. They are feral but very “human-aware” as they are tended to daily. They are feral, young and get along well with each other (most are related). We have many years of success relocating feral cats. Our hope is to transfer the cats in pairs. If you have any opportunities for a possible barn situation for these kitties - even if for just one pair - please call 518461-0251 or brightsky@nycap.rr.com

Arabella has been spayed, tested negative for FIV/Felv and is up-todate on her vaccines. Because she loves other cats so we are looking for a forever home with a cat buddy for her to interact with. Please contact moon1188@nycap.rr.com for questions or interest. Arabella is being fostered in Niskayuna, NY. We apologize in advance but our organization’s policy limits adoptions to the immediate Albany, NY area with no exceptions.

The View from Here... by Cheryl Lasher, President, Guilderland Chamber of Commerce

The Guilderland Chamber of Commerce is celebrating its 45th Anniversary this year. The Chamber encompasses the Towns of Guilderland, Altamont, Voorheesville, and surrounding communities plus people interested in conducting business in our vibrant community. The Chamber’s Mission is to strengthen member businesses and promote economic development. At the same time, our goal is to be the connection hub among businesses, the community, and local government. We share information on current events which affect the business climate and excellent quality of life we enjoy. On Thursday, March 16th, we are hosting the Annual State of the Town program at Crossgates Mall at 8:30 AM in the Funny Bones Theater. Supervisor of the Town of Guilderland, Peter Barber, will provide an overview. Mark Grimm, Albany County Legislature; Patricia Fahy, NYS Assembly; and Dr. Marie Wiles, Guilderland Central Schools will comment on what they see on the horizon in their operational areas. The public is invited. What questions do you have? For example: What do local taxes look like in the coming year? Any new job growth opportunities presenting themselves? How is the quality of our water? Are the populations of our towns growing or shrinking? What could be the local effect from federal changes in key areas such as immigration, infrastructure revitalization, or public education? The Guilderland Chamber of Commerce is “In business for business” which translates to the cultivation of business community health for the overall well-being of the towns where we work and live. Check out all our events at www.guilderlandchamber.com. Reservations for The State of the Town can be made on the website or by calling the Chamber offices at 456-6611. Guilderland, NY
