Clip & Save!

notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org

Guilderland, NY- Had enough winter yet? I daresay that most Guilderland residents would answer that question with a hearty affirmative! It seems like this winter, as well as last winter, have provided us here in Guilderland, and throughout the entire Northeast, with more than our fair share of snow and cold weather. However, the days are getting longer, and the sun sits just a touch higher in the sky each day, and before too long, the winter of 2015 will be nothing but a memory. We are so sure here at Town Hall that spring is on the way that we are in the process of preparing the schedule and the registration forms for Guilderland’s popular Summer Day Camp and Activity Camp programs. These materials will be ready by late March, with registration opening for all Town residents beginning April 1. The schedule will be available on the Parks and Recreation Department page of the Town website, www.townofguilderland.org, by the end of the month. The same page will also give you the current availability schedule for the pavilions at Tawasentha Park. There are a limited number of dates remaining for your family or group to rent one of the pavilions for your event. If you have questions about either the summer recreation programs or pavilion rentals, you can call the Parks and Recreation office at 456-3150. While winter is still with us, remember that our Town parks offer you the opportunity for wintertime recreation. Snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing, and sledding are available for all thise who enjoy these activities, and, believe it or not, it’s almost time for the heated driving range at Western Turnpike Golf Course to reopen for the season. Check out the Town website or call the Parks and Recreation Office to find out what activities are available on any given day. Many residents may have noticed the electronic message board that went up on Western Avenue recently informing drivers that roadwork would be commencing in early March. That sign refers to the beginning of the second phase of sidewalk construction on Western Avenue between Route 155 and the Albany city line. Sidewalk installation on the north side of Western 4

March 2015

OurTowneGUILDERLAND.com

Avenue was done during the 2014 construction season, and this year the process will be repeated on the south side of Western Avenue. The initial work to be completed involves the removal of a small number of trees along the route. The actual process of excavation and installation of sidewalks will be completed in warmer weather. During the same time period, sidewalk installation will also be taking place on Main Street (Route 146) in the hamlet of Guilderland Center. The installation process in both areas will involve a certain amount of lane closure during off-peak driving hours, an unavoidable circumstance. Please take care when driving through the work areas. In the end, I am certain that people will agree that the increased pedestrian safety provided by these amenities is worth the minor and temporary inconveniences associated with the completion of these projects. As we head toward the latter stage of the winter, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the efforts of the Guilderland Highway Department and the Guilderland Water and Wastewater Management Department in dealing effectively with the infrastructure challenges presented by a particularly cold and snowy season. Our Town roads here in Guilderland have been kept plowed and passable by our Highway Department, and the limited number of water main breaks that we have experienced have been dealt with quickly and effectively by our Water Department. There has been quite a bit of media coverage of infrastructure issues in area communities this winter, but you haven’t seen much at all about Guilderland. The reason for that is that our people do a good job of taking care of our infrastructure, and I would like to acknowledge that hard work and positive result. Now, let’s get ready for spring. I know it’s out there somewhere. Let’s all hope it arrives fairly soon. Ken Runion, Supervisor

message from the

CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Boy Scouts Help Food Pantry

2050 Western Ave, Suite 201, Guilderland, NY 12084 (518) 456-6611 • www.guilderlandchamber.com Guilderland, NY - One of the main challenges we have as a chamber is tackling apathy when it comes to our businesses taking an interest in issues that affect us as a town, region, and nation. This really is not just confined to businesses however, but our society as a whole. We often wonder “how does this affect me”? So many times when we ask that question it’s an issue of not really knowing the answer and not so much that it will not affect us. Issues on the national level such as the great minimum wage debate, healthcare, and payroll taxes are all recent issues that have effected both large and sole proprietor businesses. Expenses have gone up tremendously and a lot of that expense has been passed on to both the business owner in the small business world, and the employee (s). Local issues such as cuts to a school budget also have an impact on our businesses. School districts, just like a regular business, have to deal with minimum wage increases that may not have been budgeted, as well as payroll taxes and health insurance, and with all of the issues the schools have been dealing with budget wise, they have had to cut more and more jobs and programs. This in turn has affected the purchasing power of people in our community who once had a disposable income, can no longer use our businesses like they once could. Many also feel that having a large business come into the area may not have any effect on them as well. However, what many don’t realize are all of the positive subsequent benefits of having business happen in neighboring areas such more need for contractors, plumbers, builders, and other businesses due to the business that might be constructing more offices. Not to mention the people who are now employed and in turn that means more buying power for cleaning services, car repair, etc. Remember, nothing will ever change with an apathetic attitude. We must all take an interest in what is going on around us every day. Vote, encourage, spread a well-informed message. We, the Guilderland chamber are made up for a coalition of businesses that can help you do this, stay informed and on task. History proves that we are stronger in numbers. You can contact us at (518)456-6611 or email me at egauthier@guilderlandchamber.com Sincerely, Erika Gauthier, President Register for chamber events at www.guilderlandchamber.com/calendar.html 10

Guilderland's contribution helped the organization reach 12,126 books collected during this year's drive.

Healthy Snacks Benefit Teeth and Overall Health

On Friday, February 27th, my hygienist and I had the pleasure of talking to more than 100 kids at Christ the King school for Dental Health Month. During our visit we had the opportunity to talk to the kids about what they may encounter during their first visit, how to brush properly and selecting nutritious food choices. Since my visit I’ve had several parents call asking me about healthy snacks for their children so I thought I would share with you some of my thoughts. Healthy snacks benefit not only children’s teeth but also their overall health, building strong bones and muscles. Snacks are really important for small children because they are a substantial part of their diet simply because they don’t sit down to three regular meals a day. They eat more often, usually snacking throughout the day, so that makes it even more important to snack healthy. Some other additional tips about nutritious food choices: •

Avoid sicky candies and, of course, soft drinks.

Avoid foods that are fried, processed, too oily or too salty.

Keep in the fridge little bags or containers of healthy foods, prepped and ready to go: small thinly sliced carrots, cubes of cheese and chopped up fruit.

Remember to cut up all foods into small bites to prevent choking and not leave small children alone Capital District while they are eating.

IS YOUR HOME YOUR CASTLE? Guilderland, NY - In a divorce case, the marital home is often a significant asset, as well as a strongly emotional issue. In determining what to do with the marital home, there are three basic choices. It can be: sold; one party can purchase the other’s interest; or one party can have “exclusive use” for a period of time. There are pros and cons to each scenario. Selling the Home - If the home is sold, then both parties can have a clean slate. If a couple were having trouble affording it together, then selling it is the best option. If the home is sold neither party feels that the other has some type of custody advantage, that is, the children wanting to stay in their “home.” Buyout – Another option is that one party purchases the other party’s interest. The value of the home and the equity in it should be the driving force as to whether this is a good idea. For example, if the house is valued at $500,000.00 and $400,000.00 is owed on it, and you purchase your spouse’s presumptive 50% interest, can you carry a $450,000.00 mortgage by yourself? Were you struggling together with the $400,000.00 mortgage? On the other hand, if the house is worth $200,000.00, and you owe $40,000.00 on it, you could purchase your spouse’s interest for $80,000.00, and have a mortgage of $120,000.00, which may be a financial option for you. With the buyout, the children can stay in the home they are used to, but there is no further interaction between the parents about decisions concerning the home. Also, you may choose to buy out your spouse’s interest if the home will not sell quickly so you don’t have to continue to live together. Exclusive use – Whether by agreement or by decision of the court, one parent may have exclusive use for a period of time. The factors involved in an exclusive use include, the needs of the children, whether the non-custodial parent is in need of the proceeds from the sale of that home, whether comparable housing is available to the custodial parent in the same area at a lower cost, and whether the parties are financially capable of maintaining the residence. Courts will look at the age of the children, do you want to move a high school senior out of the district? It is crucially important when making a decision about the disposition of the marital residence to separate the emotional from the financial. Sometimes there is a “lose for winning.” In 25+ years I have never had a client who sold his or her portion of the home, whether to their spouse or to a third party buyer, later call me to tell me how happy they are to have kept the house, but I have had many calls a year or two after “winning” the house asking if I do closings!

LIVING IN THE “GLORY YEARS” OR LIVING FOR THE “GOLDEN YEARS” By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling

Guilderland, NY- I would like to share a story with you about a patient named Jake. He was your typical kid that grew up in the 70’s. He had an active childhood playing outside with his friends (because Xbox and IPhones were not invented yet). During high school, he was an accomplished three sport athlete in football, basketball and baseball. While he did not continue on in collegiate athletics, he did discover his love of running and continued his passion with participating in half marathons and marathons through most of his 20’s. As time passed, he became focused with his career which has him sitting in an office most of the work day or traveling. His home life was also busy with his own children and helping get them to their activities. Life has become so hectic that there is little time to exercise like he used to. He often wakes and is feeling stiff and achy. There are pains that come and go and day-to-day activities like playing with his kids has become painful. Simple things like shoveling snow, lifting a few boxes or gardening cause back pain for days. Jake has tried to play some pick-up games of basketball and golf with friends but he is reserved because of fear of what aches and pains he will feel the next day. Jake is feeling “old” and he is only in his 40’s. How many of you have felt like this? This is a version of the story that I often hear from patients and even resonates with me – feeling “old” at forty-something. Why can’t I do the things I did in my “glory years?” Maybe it is because of the lifestyle that I lived during my teens and twenties- competitive sports, injuries that lead to surgeries, not able to give up the competition, going back to sports and pushing it to the limit. So now, two kids later and a job that is very physically demanding on my petite frame, I can admit that by the end of the week, I feel it in my body too. When it comes to exercise, I really want to be one of the twenty something’s making Crossfit look so easy. In my head, I can do all those power lifts, but when I do them, my body laughs at me. I can hear my old injuries and joints saying to me “you’re kidding me right?” If you have shared similar experiences, you may also be wondering what can be done to ease some of the nagging aches and pains? Somewhere along the line we have to change our strategy from selfdestruction to self-preservation. How can we continue to get more years out of these joints when the damage is taking its toll? Here are some simple tips that can help ease strain we put our bodies through. 1. Water and hydration: We have all seen what beef jerky looks like right? That is an exaggerated version of muscle dehydration. It sounds simple and silly but getting adequate water keeps your muscle tissue hydrated which makes them work better. When muscles are happy, there is less strain on the joints. Water also helps to keep joints lubricated.

2. Get up and change positions: Four hours is a good marathon time. If you think about your job, you are performing a 4 hour “sitting marathon” in the morning and then again in the afternoon. Humans have officially mastered sitting. The human body was meant to move, not sit. When comparing various positions, sitting is the most compressive force on the spine. It causes the lumbar discs to degenerate much faster which leads to arthritis, stenosis and bone spurs. What that means to you is the day-to-day nagging pain. If you have to sit for your job, set a timer to get up and move every 20 minutes. If sitting is a must, then consider an ergonomic evaluation to see if your workstation is set up in optimal positions for your body. 3. Stretch, stretch, stretch: When life is busy and spending 60 minutes a day at the gym is just not going to fit in your schedule, then at least spend 10 minutes stretching. Do stretches that reverse the motion you are in most of the day. For example, if you are sitting at a desk all day, which puts your body in a forward curve like a banana, stretch the front muscles of your body to get extension. Stand up, lean back slightly, look up to sky and open up your arms wide, inhale and exhale into the stretch. If you are a painter and looking up all day painting ceilings or reaching overhead, stretch in the reverse motion by bending forward at the hips, neck and shoulders. 4. Strengthen your core: I have written about the importance of core strength a number of times over the years. Your “core muscles” are the deep abdominal and back muscles that help to stabilize your spine. This protects the joints and discs from further wear and tear. Properly engaging your core throughout your day and maintaining strong posture is one thing that can immediately take away pressure in your spine. If you don’t know how to do this, please call us. We are happy to spend some time teaching you these simple exercises. Patients are always amazed how simple strategies can ease some of the everyday aches and pains. Letting go of the “glory years’ does not mean letting go of your identity. It means wisdom is guiding you down a safe path of preservation. It is living for a better quality of life in the golden years. Focus on being the best version of yourself…in these years. TEAMWORK Guilderland, NY - Last week I had the privilege of attending the Guilderland High School Spirit Rally. It was a great event, but what stood out to me the most was the many choreographed performances by the cheerleaders, the dance squad and the cast of our spring musical Curtains. We are very fortunate to have the resources, student skills and right people in place to make these performances really quite outstanding on a National level. I congratulate all of the performers, advisors and crews for giving us a great show, increasing our spirit for Guilderland and for continuing to pursue excellence in competition in our area and around our country.

needs. I have many students that are also successful in traditional team sports, but what makes Taekwondo special for the whole population of potential athletes is that performances are individual but performed as part of a team and our community. Even for students for whom competition is not a goal, the pursuit of personal excellence as part of a large community has a team feeling and all of the rewards we need from feeling like we are part of a group.

We, at Guilderland Martial Arts are entering our own competition season that has before taken us with great success to the National Championships. As I was watching our rally at GHS I started to think about how important for us it is too feel part of a team; part of something bigger than ourselves. It is rewarding and represents one of the higher level needs we have as humans. The nice thing about Taekwondo is that it provides an opportunity for students that are not usually successful in traditional team sports to excel as a member of a community that is bigger than just themselves. When they are ready, they may compete as part of a team with common goals and training

Anyone can be part of something that is bigger than just themselves. It is wonderful to be needed and uplifting to know you are part of a team. You don’t have to be on the A team or the travel team or Varsity to feel this. You can be part of a reading club or bowling league on the weekends. You can join a hunting, fishing, star gazing, dance, dog lover, hiking, biking, skiing or like I recently did, a breaking “club” (we practice breaking boards, coconuts and cement to name a few) . The list is endless and limited only by your desires and imagination. Be a part of something bigger than yourself, where you can make contributions and take advice. Join in a team of some sort and experience the uplifting power and lessons learned from membership, camaraderie and teamwork. Go Dutch, Go GMA! Try your best and you won’t regret it!

Master Rice owns Guilderland Martial Arts and holds a 5th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. Master Rice is also a Math teacher at Guilderland High School. Guilderland Martial Arts offers classes starting at age 4 as well as an afterschool program and summer camps. For more information please call 690-1269.

GUILDERLAND CHAMBER MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Interview with Dr. Chad A. Vaughn O.D. Vaughn Vision- Family Eyecare Q. How long have you been in business? A. I have been practicing Optometry since 2002. I moved back to the area and practiced around the capital region a few years before starting my own practice in Saratoga Springs in 2010 and opened a satellite office in Guilderland in 2015. Q. Where are you located? A. The Guilderland practice is located at 3770 Carman Road, Schenectady Q. What is your phone number and website address? A. Our website is www.VaughnVision.com and the phone number is (518) 982-0123. Q. What hours are you open? A. We are open Monday 9-6:00, Tuesday 9-5:00, Wednesday 9-6:00, Thursday 9-5:00, Friday 9-3:00, and Saturday by appointment. Q. Describe your business and how you got started? A. Vaughn Vision is a family eyecare practice where we do comprehensive eye exams, diagnose and treat eye disease, fit contact lenses and specialty contacts, and fit glasses and sunglasses. Our patients range from infants to elderly. I got into optometry because when I was growing up I was fascinated by how the human eye works; and knew I wanted to be in the health care field helping people, so a career as an optometrist was a perfect fit for me. Q. Are you known for anything special? A. I think we have grown so well in Saratoga Springs because our attention to exceptional service paired with the latest technology in diagnostic equipment. Our patients can be confident they are getting the most current and comprehensive eye exam available. We also offer the latest advancements in spectacle lens technology, and contact lenses. Our frame selection is unique, fashionable and trendy with a wide range of price points for any budget. In a nutshell, we are here to serve you. We want you to have a great experience, get a great eye exam, and leave feeling great in your new glasses or contacts.

Q. What do you love most about the business? A. What I most enjoy is the interaction with my patients and really getting to know them and their families while helping them see the best they can.

Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. Like any new business, the biggest challenge we face is to make people aware of what we have to offer and how we are different from other optometric practices. It is important to be able to gain people’s trust and confidence. When patients come to Vaughn Vision it is essential for them to know that their eyes are in good hands, and that they are going to be treated with honesty and integrity.

EXPANDED SOCIAL SERVICE DOG PROGRAM AT GCSD Guilderland, NY- The Guilderland Central School District is excited to announce the expansion of its public school social service dog program thanks to a grant awarded to the district in 2014 from the Community Foundation of the Greater Capital District. The grant will allow Guilderland to expand its service dog program from one dog (Miss Siggy) to six dogs. Miss Siggy and school social worker Catherine Ricchetti have worked in three Guilderland elementary schools over the last eleven years helping thousands of children. Miss Siggy helps with social-emotional needs, bullying prevention and academic perseverance. The astounding success of this singular dog program led to the process of purchasing five labradoodle puppies. The first puppy added from the grant, Willow, joined the Pine Bush Elementary School community in November 2014. The district anticipates welcoming its second puppy to a school learning community in the fall of 2015. All five dogs will be certified by Therapy Dog International which allows them to work as social service dogs in our schools. GALA AND SILENT AUCTION On Saturday, March 21, 2015, Bloomingrove Veterinary Hospital will host a fundraising gala and silent auction at the Franklin Plaza Ballroom in Troy to benefit the GCSD social service dog program, which is sustained solely by grants and private donations. All staff and community members are invited to attend the event, which kicks off at 7 p.m. and will feature great food, dancing, and a cash bar. Local businesses are also invited to contribute merchandise and/ or gift cards for this event. All proceeds from the silent auction will fund the training and certification of the labradoodle puppies and approximately 50 school district educators who will be the canine handlers in our schools. If you are interested in making a donation to the silent auction, please contact Catherine Ricchetti (x-3504) or Keith VanWagenen (x-4204) at 357-2770. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you there! Order tickets online at: www.celebrations.com/rsvp/57qdjq4p5rt4y68kx

Westmere teacher Tracy Martone named Technology in Education award winner March 2, 2015—Congratulations to Tracy Martone, a third grade teacher at Westmere Elementary School, for recently being named a district Technology in Education award winner. Martone has been teaching in the district since 2000, and has always been interested in finding ways to include technology into her teaching. "I find inspiration from colleagues in Guilderland and the many teachers around the country who I follow and exchange ideas with on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook," she said. Martone was selected for this honor by the district technology cabinet, comprised of teachers and administrators from throughout the district, based on nomination forms submitted by her colleagues. Any staff member can nominate a teacher for a technology award. Effectively using technology in the classroom As explained in her nomination forms, Martone has gone above and beyond to integrate technology into her everyday instruction. She has pioneered a number of technology-based experiences this year in a variety of areas of her classroom. Her classroom blog is evidence of all that she has done just this year. For example, she uses Google docs with her third grade students to publish their writing pieces and also uses Google Earth and Google to research for a classroom study of Asia. Another example includes the use of the iPad app Aurasma as a medium for creating digital content that enhances learning through the use of Augmented Reality. Martone used Aurasma to create "Auras" on existing

book pictures. When scanned with an iPad, the "Auras" would show videos and more images that enhanced and clarified the meaning of the existing book pictures. Not only did she learn how to use Aurasma on her own and in turn teach it to her students, but she also had her students teach their peers in a first-grade classroom how to use the app, as well. Martone also implemented a classroom management program called Class Dojo. The students raved about this program and she reported great success with using the program to motivate students to be more respectful, cooperative, and thoughtful in their actions. In addition, she has been working with another fellow third-grade teacher at the district in an e-pal project. Students send e-mail messages back and forth between the classrooms to exchange ideas, opinions and work collaboratively on designated projects. They are planning to hold "Book Talks" in the near future. Martone is consistently willing to reach outside her comfort zone to try new things. It is her willingness to explore technology on her own, teach herself how to use different forms of technology, and implement and share with her educational community that makes Martone an excellent candidate for the Technology in Education Award. To recognize her innovative use of technology in the classroom, Martone will receive a $500 credit to spend on items related to professional technology. Approved use of funds includes more technology items/ devices/subscriptions for her class or for personal professional development/advancement such as conferences, books or classes.

Join Us in Something New! Guilderland, NY- Here at the Guilderland Public Library, were trying something new, and we’d love for you to join us! On Saturday April 25th, our Foundation will host a fundraising gala dinner dance. Titled “A Novel Affair,” the event will be held at Mallozzi’s clubhouse at the Western Turnpike Golf Course, just a mile or so from the Library. The party starts at six, with an open bar for beer, wine, and soda for the first two hours. Light music will be provided by the Mixed Company band as people mingle and enjoy conversation, light hors d’oeuvres, and a stellar silent auction featuring over 70 items donated by businesses and individuals in Guilderland and surrounding areas. Dinner starts at seven, and features three great selections from Mallozzi’s highly regarded kitchen: Chicken Piccata, Oven Baked Whitefish, and Eggplant Parmesan. Options are available for diners with special dietary needs with advance notice. After dinner we’ll honor the man of the hour, Robert Ganz, Esq., who will be given the Library Foundation’s first “Founder’s Award.” The Foundation and the library itself honor Mr. Ganz for his nearly 15 years of leadership and service to the library’s Board of Trustees, as well as for his pivotal role in envisioning and creating the Guilderland Library Foundation. There will be a great live auction featuring some incredible donations: a sapphire-and-diamond ring from Singer’s Jewelers (Mr. Jeffrey Singer will also serve as the evening’s Master of Ceremonies); a week at a vacation condo in Florida’s golf mecca known as The Villages; four seats to a Boston Red Sox game at historic Fenway Park with tenth-row aisle seats behind the third-base dugout for a Sunday afternoon game against the defending AL pennant-winning Kansas City Royals; two round trip tickets on Southwest Airlines to Orlando and four Park Hopper passes to Disney World; and several golf packages at local courses. There is also a fantastic backstage tour for up to six people of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum led by GPL Director Tim Wiles, who knows the stories at the Hall inside and out, since he was Director of Research there for 20 years before coming aboard at GPL. After the auction, it’s time to hit the dance floor for Jazz and pop tunes from the excellent Mixed Company band! As befits the festive gala atmosphere, you’re encouraged to enjoy dressing in your finest festive suits and dresses, though if you prefer a more relaxed “corporate casual” look, that’s great as well. TRASH TALK

by Vince Coppola, Owner of Scrapster, LLC I don’t want to start out this column being negative, so I promise: NO WIND CHILL IMPERSONATIONS!!! Instead I will get off to a torrid start and charm you with my personal warmth and some sizzling Hollywood gossip about who is the latest red hot sultry star to go down in a blaze of glory. This will be followed by some hot new ideas and then I’ll go off on a tangent about the tropical fish I had as a kid. I’m on fire now! Remember those old Dean Martin Roasts on TV? They are seared into my distant memories; back when everyone in the movies smoked. Then we’ll have a heated discussion about baking vs. broiling fish, which may turn feverous and make you boiling mad. The discussion will take a fiery turn and I will get all steamed up while doing a slow burn about the pros and cons of a scorched earth policy during wartime. Whew, I don’t know about you, but after that I am finding myself a little parched. Hey… after this ridiculous winter I will try anything to keep warm!!! Finally March is here and IT’S TIME TO GET READY FOR SPRING CLEAN UP! Yeah, I know, you need a break, but like I always say: “If it’s not broke, or even if it is broken… call Scrapster today!” Ok, had to get a quick plug in there (terrible, just terrible). Ideas for making your FUN = CLEAN UP process easier: 1.

2. 3.

4.

Separate unwanted items into 4 groups: household garbage; useful items to donate like clothing; recyclables (scrap metal, electronics, glass, plastic, paper); and junk (broken stuff, old furniture, wood, etc.). Start with one room like the kitchen which will go fast and provide instant satisfaction. Make some easy decisions-If you’re not using something, get rid of it. Don’t plan for years down the road when you “might” need it-trust me, when you finally get around to using (fill in the blank) it will be inevitable it was broken the whole time or you are missing half the pieces. Let go of sentimentality. I am not going to throw away my wedding album even though I have only looked at it once in the last 113 years. Maybe the Smithsonian would be interested in your National Geographic collection? Probably not. Ditto the toys in the garage only the squirrels play with, since your kids are in college now. Time to say goodbye!

We can help. Scrapster is family owned local business which provides a NO COST scrap metal and appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk and furniture removal, TV removal and clean outs. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. We are convenient, reliable, insured, and we do all the work. Give us a call today at (518) 505-5055 or visit our website to set up an appointment online at www.Scrapster.com. 24

The time to start working on changes is NOW Guilderland, NY- So cold. So cold. So cold. Man! It may not seem feasible but spring is a short few weeks away. We will all be doing more out doors anticipating SUMMER! Swimming! Beaches! Shorts! Skirts! Tank Tops…. What? You don’t want to unwrap your winter body and show it to the world? This is a common feeling. The time to start working on changes is NOW. Today. Right now. Get going. One of the most common objections I hear to my programs is this: “I’m not in good enough shape to do that.” What? This is just an easy way to tell ourselves that we don’t have to do it. The “I’ll come back when I’m in shape”….well, how is that going to happen? I don’t care if you’re trying to run an Ironman or walk around the block. The only way to get there is to START. Will you be good? Probably not. Will you be sore? Yes. Will it be hard? Absolutely. Then guess what happens? You get in better shape. You get stronger. You get healthier. You can do more. But not if you don’t start. There is no ‘perfect’ time to start working on your health and fitness. There is no one way to do it. There is no right or wrong as long as you DO IT. However if after a period of time, lets just say a month, your workout gets easier; it’s time to CHANGE. Go faster. Go longer. Do something else. Once you get comfortable and ‘used to’ your routine, it becomes just that: routine. Our bodies adapt. Once this happens, change stops. You need to push yourself. You need variety in your workouts. I have a sign hanging in my studio with a well-worn phrase: “If it doesn’t challenge you it doesn’t change you.” It’s so true. We work on everything from strength and resistance training to yoga. Cardio vascular workouts to balance and stability training. Speed and Agility to Core strength. The point is my clients are always being asked to do something new and different. It’s hard. It’s challenging. They get results. Don’t settle for routine. Don’t wait to ‘get in shape’ so you can get in shape. That even sounds weird just to write.

So here are 4 moves to get you started. Let me know how it goes! Wide Push-ups: start in plank, hands wider than shoulders. High Knee Sprints: Run with knees coming to hips. Pump arms Squat Jumps: Feet hip width. Bend knees and jump as high as you can. Land softly Plank with Leg Raise: Hold plank on hands. Raise 1 leg off ground. Keep knee straight. Do each move for 30 Seconds. 10 seconds between moves. Repeat sequence 4 times (For demonstration, modifications and progressions visit mgxfitness. com for a video link under ‘Home workout 1’) Thanks! Stay warm

FARNSWORTH MIDDLE SCHOOL RE-DESIGNATED AN ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS SCHOOL TO WATCH BY NYS EDUCATION DEPARTMENT GUILDERLAND, NY—The Guilderland Central School District is proud to announce that Farnsworth Middle School was recently redesignated as an Essential Elements School to Watch (EESTW) by the New York State Education Department and the Essential Elements Schools to Watch leadership team. Farnsworth was first recognized as a School to Watch in March 2011. This prestigious designation recognizes the middle school’s continued commitment to enhancing school programs and practices. Farnsworth is one of only 27 schools from throughout New York to currently be named a School to Watch. Farnsworth Middle School was commended for developing a model educational program in New York State that is consistent with the Regents Policy Statement on Middle Level Education, the Essential Elements of a Standards Focused Middle Level School, and the National Forum’s Schools to Watch criteria. EESTW recognizes schools that demonstrate continuous improvement and excel in the following four domains: academic excellence, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and organizational structure. Farnsworth was selected by state leaders for its academic excellence, its responsiveness to the needs and interests of young adolescents, and its commitment to helping all students achieve at high levels. In addition, Farnsworth—like all designated schools—was proven to show strong leadership, teachers who work together to improve curriculum and instruction, and a commitment to assessment and accountability to bring about continuous improvement. Selection into the EESTW program is based on a written application; schools that meet the necessary criteria are then visited by state teams who observe classrooms and interview administrators, teachers, students, and parents. State teams also look at school achievement data, suspension rates, quality of lessons, and student work to help inform their selection process. Selected schools are recognized for a three-year period, and at the end of three years must repeat the process in order to be re-designated. Fewer than 400 schools nationally are presently designated as a School to Watch. The schools vary in size from several hundred to several thousand students and represent urban, suburban, and rural communities. Farnsworth Middle School will be formally recognized as both a State and National School to Watch at the upcoming National Schools to Watch Conference in Washington, D.C. this June.
