notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org Guilderland, NY - Spring’s arrival brings a flurry of outdoor activities in our neighborhoods, and your Town parks, trails, and recreational facilities are not an exception. Here are few quick updates. Registration is ongoing for the Town’s extensive summer camp and recreation programs. Program details and registration is available online at www.guilderlandrec.com or by calling the Parks’ Office at 456-3150. The construction of Tawasentha Park’s new pool house is also proceeding with the recent delivery of building trusses and should be open with the start of the swimming season. The Town’s Western Turnpike Golf Course is fully opened. Due to the hard work and dedication of groundskeeping staff, and helped by a mild winter, the course is in excellent shape. Residents can obtain discounted greens fees with proof of residency. Please call the Pro Shop at 456-0786 for more information. The Town’s walking trails at Tawasentha Park are ready for your enjoyment. The Town is also preparing recently acquired open space for future hiking trails and passive recreation. Additional information about the Town’s trails is available on the Town’s website (www. townofguilderland.org) or by calling the Parks’ Office.

The Police Department has offered the public access to Nixle®, a service that allows residents to receive important information via text, email and/or web access. Officer Russ Tallman has been instrumental in arranging for this service and recently expanded it to other Town departments, including Highway, Water & Wastewater, Parks, Transfer Station, Zoning, Building, and Planning. A wide variety of information is provided including missing person alerts, traffic alerts, road and lane closures, police activity, press releases, water advisories, special events, and many more topics. The service will also be used to share non-emergency information about community events.

You are also invited to visit the Albany Pine Bush Preserve, much of which You can sign-up for Nixle® for free via is located in the Town. Teamwork By Master Rice

Guilderland, NY - At Guilderland Martial Arts I am surrounded by a group of students that demonstrate superior teamwork, team spirit and cooperation. Their commitment to excellence in character and selflessness is astounding and impresses me everyday. Most recently I noticed it when we were attending a local martial arts tournament in Cohoes. I watched an experienced 13 year old blackbelt helping prepare younger, less experienced students for their performances. He was entertaining them when necessary and helpful in instruction for performance, all the while maintaining a positive happy attitude. I noticed another group of experienced tournament students gathering around younger new competitors to cheer them on and encourage them before, during and after their performance. The experienced team gathered students for photos, helped prepare their breaking materials and made sure the students were focused before their performance. Some of our first time performers may not have been able to overcome their fears of performing without the support and guidance of their friends they found when they arrived. This whole scene impressed me most of all because I had not even asked anyone to do this, it just is they way we are as a team. Later in the day I got to watch all of my excellent, experienced and selfless leaders give great performances themselves; we returned from the day with 22 trophies for our team of 20. I see my experienced tournament team helping others all the time. Some times it is at tournaments, sometimes it is on a Saturday volunteering time to help our challenger students, sometimes it is participating in local charity events and sometimes it is just helping those around them in class. Fortunately, being a teacher in our district allows me to observe the students in a different setting where their great character continues. All of our experienced tournament team has qualified for the National Championships and some are State Champions. They will come with me to participate in the National Championships this summer. The thing that makes them great however is their selfless character to help others. They realize what so many of us miss each day: the next person we help might just someday be a champion or the president or cure cancer or land on Mars. You see, you just never know. The contribution that each one of us makes as a team player in our families and in our communities helps us all get better at what we want to do. I am so proud of the wonderful student family I have gathered around me and so proud that they “get it. I am also so proud of the success of our tournament team headed to nationals this year. It is going to be a great showing for Guilderland Martial Arts. If you or someone you know wants to try Olympic style Taekwondo, then why not train where champions train? Champions that have an excellent sense of great character and positive teamwork. Maybe someone in your family is the next champion.

GUILDERLAND MARTIAL ARTS 2563 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 690-1269 www.guilderlandmartialarts.com Master Rice owns Guilderland Martial Arts and holds a 5th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. OUCH! WHAT IS THAT SHARP PAIN IN MY FOOT? By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling Guilderland, NY - Are your feet ready for summer? With the beautiful weather we have had lately I’m sure you have treated your little piggy’s to some fresh warm sunshine or a new pedicure. But are they ready for a long hike, a day pounding the pavement at the fair or outdoor festival? With the change of seasons also comes a change in footwear. This time of year the sandals and flip flops are flying off the shelves. Did you know that wearing the wrong type of footwear during summer activities can lead to a common foot condition call plantar fasciitis?

Over the years, I have treated many cases of plantar fasciitis with great success. Treatments typically include myofascial release, instrument assisted soft tissue techniques, cold laser, adjustments to misaligned joints, arch strengthening exercises, stretches and lastly orthotics if indicated. I will almost always use various taping techniques to see if it alleviates the pain and if it works, then the patient will most likely benefit from a different type of shoe or orthotics. Depending on the duration of the injury, night splints have also been helpful.

Plantar Fasciitis is classically described as sharp pain on the bottom of your foot either by your heel or in the middle of your arch. It is especially sharp those first few steps out of bed in the morning. The pain gradually feels a little better as you get moving but then can be tender again after sitting for a period of time. What causes Plantar Fasciitis? Most people think it starts from a bone spur on the bottom of your heel. In reality, it most often begins from calf muscles that are too tight and then it is aggravated by wearing shoes with little support or a change in exercise routine such as running hills or jumping. It can also be caused by foot mechanics that are described as either too flat or too high of an arch. Left untreated, it can lead to other joint pain in the knees, hips and low back. This is due to altered walking mechanics because the individual is trying to avoid stepping on the painful foot. When we transition from winter shoes where our entire foot is covered and start to wear a pair a flip flops or sandals, there can be some initial strain on your feet and legs. Many summer shoes lack adequate support for spending longs days outdoors. Flip flops typically have the least amount of foot support and are best worn for a short duration such as a quick trip to the store or when they need to be removed frequently such as going to the beach or the pool. Strap type sandals with good arch support are better for longer walking trips or activities. Better shoes help to prevent strain on the intrinsic foot muscles, legs and hips.

BASIC CALF MUSCLE STRETCHES Hold each stretch for 30-60 seconds to treat and prevent plantar fasciitis. If you or someone you know has been suffering from foot pain we would be happy to help. As always, you can call the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center for a free consultation at 518-869-3415. Please visit our website for more information at www.sportsandspinalwellness.com and like us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/sportsandspinalwellness. We would be happy to be a part of your healthcare team.

ORAL CANCER…..

Are you educated about this Life-Changing Disease?? This month I would like to talk about a Disease I take very seriously and personally, it’s called Oral Cancer. It’s a disease that, according to the most recent American Cancer Society estimates, more than 48,000 people will get this year and more than 9500 people will die from. The Oral Cancer Foundation reports that of the new cases diagnosed this year, only approximately 57% of those individuals will be alive in five years. Oral cancer is typically discovered in its late stages, which leads to a high death rate in those that have it. And because the disease can grow and develop without the patient noticing any obvious symptoms, there is less of a chance it will be diagnosed in the early stages. I believe consumers need to be educated about the value of a routine dental appointment and it’s not just about getting your teeth cleaned or fixing a chipped tooth but maintaining your overall oral health. Part of my initial exam consists of a Head and Neck evaluation, a look at all the soft tissues in the mouth visually and with the Velscope. The Velscope is a non-invasive oral cancer screening device which can aid in finding abnormalities not visible to the naked eye. The velscope technology stimulates the surface cells by a blue light which then fluoreses the tissues and can help detect any changes at the surface of the tissues. I also use an intraoral camera and retractors to photograph suspected lesions. These photos are added to the patients chart and used for comparison during follow-up appointments, and they’re sent to the oral surgeon if a referral is necessary for further evaluation. A valuable part of each patients’ oral health visit is educating them about oral cancer risks factors, the top three being tobacco use, heavy alcohol use, and HPV (human papillomavirus). According to the Center for Disease Control, 72% of oropharyngeal cancers in the United States can be attributed to HPV. We do let patients know vaccinations are available and that if they want more details they should talk to their family physician. I tell all my patients if they have any sore spots that they previously didn’t recognize or that are oddly shaped or growing to come in and let me take a look. I have to take these measures because oral cancer can develop rather quickly. Oral Cancer is a potentially deadly disease that can be detected early through a thorough exam, which I take great care to perform on all my patients. I like to take this time to wish all the Mother’s out there a Happy Mother’s Day. With Oshins of Smiles, Dr. Steven Oshins

DO NOT PRESS “RECORD”

by Leyla A. Kiosse

Guilderland NY - The custody1 of children is often an issue that must be resolved between separating or divorcing parents. If the parents cannot agree on custody of the children, a Court is left to decide this issue. In New York, the Court applies the “best interests of the child” standard to determine custody. To determine whether it is in the best interests of the child to live with one or perhaps both of the parents, the Court will look to any factor that is relevant. Here are a few examples of what the Court will consider: •

the relationship between the child and each parent;

the willingness of each parent to foster a relationship between the child and the other parent (and/or extended family members);

the child’s preferences (although this is not determinative and how much weight a Court gives to what the child wants is heavily dependent on the facts of each particular case).

When a separation or divorce is imminent, it is common for parents to begin keeping notes of what s/he has done to be the “better parent”. While keeping a journal or a calendar is not unwise, some parents, unfortunately, go to the extreme to take notes by using electronic recording devices. This often occurs when one parent records his/her conversation with the other parent. While many clients have brought me recordings of the other parent, these recordings are more often than not unhelpful and make the person who made them look foolish. Sometimes a parent will take the recordings even further, and record the conversations between the other parent and the child, or the other parent and a third party, or the child and a third party. The making of these recordings is illegal. Section 250.05 of New York’s Penal Law prohibits the recording a conversation

between two or more people if the person making the recording is not a party to the conversation or does not have the consent of at least one party to the conversation to make the recording. To violate this law constitutes a class E felony. But what if the parent who made the recordings did so with good intentions – does that matter? Maybe. But probably not. In People v. Badalamenti, the Court of Appeals held that a parent may give consent on behalf of a child to record the child’s conversation with another person if that parent has a “good faith, objectively reasonable basis to believe that it is necessary, in order to serve the best interests of [the child]” to make that recording. Under such circumstances, the recording of the child’s conversation would not be a violation of Section 250.05. However, this is an extremely narrow exception to Section 250.05 based upon a highly unique set of facts from the Badalamenti case, and should not (and I stress this) be relied upon to begin recording conversations that you are not a party to. Our advice is to refrain from making these recordings at all, and when in doubt, seek the advice of an attorney. 1

There are two components to “custody”: legal custody, which is the right to make decisions that affect the health, welfare, and education of the child; and physical custody, which is where the child where live the majority of the time.

TRASH TALK

by Vince Coppola, owner of Scrapster LLC, Scrap & Junk Removal Service

Spring Cleaning Con nues as Summer Approaches! Guilderland, NY - At Scrapster we are con nuing to increase our focus on Furniture Removal, Clean Outs & Junk Removal. We have found our niche locally. Our reputa on for fair pricing and great service is growing, THANKS to our customers spreading the word…which has led to an increasing amount of referrals. A big advantage of going with us is that we separate out scrap metal, electronics, tools and appliances and do not typically charge for them, which really can keep costs low on your clean out project. This month’s theme is Home Safety. Look around your home-do you see any of the following? • Heavy refrigerators or other large appliances in a basement or garage that are not easy to move. • Gas grills, old propane cylinders or empty metal gas cans. • Rusty metal objects with sharp edges. • Lawn mowers, lawn tractors or snow blowers that leak gas or oil. • Water heater or oil tanks in danger of rus ng through and causing property damage. • Broken metal chairs that someone might accidentally sit on. • Bikes or scooters with missing parts, bad brakes or flat res. • Le over yard debris that could lead to problems with animals or that is an eyesore when you are planning on selling or ren ng a property. • Items stacked against a wall or near fire exits that represent a hazard for small children.

As a scrap metal recycler we make sure appliances and other metal objects are broken down into basic components (wire, motors, etc.) for more effec ve re-use. We also separate items a er cleanouts, which involves dona ng items such as clothing, toys, and furniture, while separa ng cardboard and paper/magazines, etc. so they can be recycled properly. MORE GOOD NEWS: We are fully EPA 608 cer fied for refrigerant recovery. This month we are again offering FREE REMOVAL OF ANY APPLIANCE THAT CONTAINS FREON. Major household items that use Freon are refrigerators, freezers, wine coolers, dehumidifiers and air condi oners. We use state of the art equipment to safely and effec vely vacuum the refrigerant out into special tanks. It is then properly recondi oned and kept out of the atmosphere. FACT: countless appliances are thrown away every single day that are not recycled properly. They get smashed apart or just sit in the woods bleeding refrigerant. If we all work together we can eliminate this major problem. Let’s do this! We are there for you! Scrapster is a family owned local business which provides a NO COST/LOW COST scrap metal & appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk, furniture and electronics removal and clean outs. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. We are convenient, reliable, insured, and we do all the work. “Don’t Worry…We Can Take It!”™ Please call us today for more details at (518) 505-5055 or visit our website to set up an appointment online at www.Scrapster.com.

from the

GUILDERLAND PUBLIC LIBRARY

2228 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 456-2400 • www.guilpl.org

From the Director... As the time for you to vote on the Library’s 2016/2017 Budget approaches – the polls are open from noon to 9 pm at your local Elementary School, on Tuesday, May 17 -- it’s a good opportunity for me to tell you what we’ve done over the past year. There was an explosion, of sorts, GPL in 2015. It wasn’t a real explosion, just a dramatic expansion in our programming efforts and corresponding attendance. Major events such as the “Hudson Valley Beer: From Hops to Home” series, spotlighting the burgeoning craft-brewing scene in the Capital Region, and “The Art of Being Super,” a celebration of comic-book artistry that brought four of the leading comic book artists to Guilderland (including Guilderland’s own Batman-drawing superstar, Greg Capullo), have brought a wider audience to your library. We started celebrating homegrown talent with the monthly “Read Local” series featuring Capital Region authors. The program kicked off in December with Troy-based author Amy Halloran slinging her signature pancakes while talking about her new book, The New Bread Basket. From a youth perspective, the Summer Reading Program was greatly enhanced, and attendance at our Storytimes is through the roof, regularly attracting 60 to 80 participants. A number of food drives gave customers the opportunity to have their fines forgiven in exchange for donations of non-perishable food. This collaboration with the Guilderland Food Pantry furthers their mission of “Neighbors Helping Neighbors.” It has been so successful that a permanent foodcollection receptacle has been installed in the Library’s lobby. In order to serve our customers better, we began selling fishing and hunting licenses – the first public library in the country to do so. We also started circulating folding tables, bake ware, and similar items that patrons would love to use, but might not want to own. Our librarians came up with a “Pop-Up Library,” which can appear anywhere in Guilderland to reach library users – and maybe some non-users, too, wherever they are. Customers can check out material, register for programs, and even get a library card! Speaking of library cards, we broadened eligibility to include those who work here and who contribute to our local economy. Right at the end of the year, we installed what we hope will be a highly effective marketing tool: An electric sign in front of the Library on Western Avenue. This sign provides at-a-glance updates on upcoming events. And, last but not least, WE GOT A COW! Not just any cow, but a local icon that sat atop a local business since 1963. “Greufus” as he’s called, has quickly become a beloved staff member. It would behoove you to come see him! It’s been quite a year here at GPL. Who knows what the rest of 2016 holds? Regards, Tim

CHARTING YOUR COURSE BY DOUG BAUER

Guilderland, NY - Chinese philosopher Laozi noted that a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Wellseasoned travelers will hasten to add that having the final destination and route in mind also contribute to a journey’s success. Individuals and couples would be well-advised to take the first step on their financial journey - enter the Financial Plan!

• • • •

A financial plan in its most basic form typically tries to answer the question, “Can I retire?” More specifically, a plan will try to project what level of income can be available at a given retirement age, based on several assumptions such as savings rate, investment returns, inflation, etc. However, a financial plan can and should go well beyond retirement planning to address several important questions, such as: • • • • • •

Are we paying unnecessary income taxes or capital gains taxes? How will I pay for the costs associated with higher learning? How should our investment portfolio be designed to best align with our goals and objectives? What do we want to happen to our assets if we pass away, and what’s the best way to accomplish this? How can I best gift assets to charitable organizations that are important to me? Should we be concerned about estate taxes even

though we’re not worth millions of dollars? Am I taking full advantage of any benefits available from my employer? Are we properly using debt to leverage our personal balance sheet? Are there any opportunities to reduce our fixed expenses? Do we have proper insurance coverage in place to protect our lives, health, income, assets, etc.?

A well-designed financial plan will address each of the above issues, and provide an action plan for any adjustments that should be made to your current situation. A comprehensive financial planner will not only prescribe solutions, but will also work with you to implement any required courses of action. Being well-informed is not sufficient – e.g. knowing that diet and exercise are the keys to physical health is not enough without actually eating healthy and starting an exercise regimen. Likewise, knowing the proper financial steps to take is not enough without actually making positive changes! Our experience has shown us that many individuals and couples can benefit from a second opinion on their financial health. Seeking advice from a qualified financial planner can help expose any areas that should be addressed in order to best guide you on your financial journey.

FOR ADOPTION

“TANNER”, is a neutered male cat, who was found in a back yard in January looking for food. When we took him in to be neutered, he tested positive for Feline Leukemia, therefore cannot be released back outside with other cats. He needs a home without other cats or with other cats who are Feline Leukemia positive. He is very friendly: likes to be brushed, loves to play w/toys, sat in my lap while sewing at the machine. I pick him up all the time. He had his Rabies Vaccine and Distemper Vaccine. He doesn’t seem to trust the foster dog that is downstairs w/him so wants to atttack the dog (they are separated by a doggie gate and Tanner gets to come out when the foster dog is out for a walk. As soon as he hears us coming, he darts back to his room. If interested in this sweet cat, please call Deb at 518-765-5007.

BATMAN is a super friendly, easy-going, active one year old neutered male kitty. He is a small-size cat weighing in at 8 pounds. He is all black with stunning green eyes. He is extremely affectionate and loves to sit in your lap and be carried around in your arms. He makes sweet chirping noises to communicate with you he will meet you at the door when you come in. Batman is so happy to be inside and has no interest in going back outdoors. The best home for Batman would be one with at least one other cat as he loves other kitties. He happily interacts with the five cats in his foster home. He has tested negative for FIV/Felv and is up-to-date on his vaccines.
