notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE 5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org Guilderland, NY - Fall’s arrival brings a change to cooler weather, with colorful leaves and outdoor activities at your Town Parks and apples, pumpkins, and other autumn produce to buy and enjoy at local businesses and farm stands. The new Vosburgh Trails on seventy acres of Town-owned open space adjacent to the Twenty West subdivision are now open to the public and can be accessed at trail heads on Vosburgh Road and Millingstone Drive. Here’s a photo of Wayde Bush of the Water Department doing a final cut after the Parks Department made repeated brush cuts. In the near future, kiosks will be installed with the trail maps, which are downloadable on the Town website. The Parks Department is also laying out a trail that will link Vosburgh Trails to the new French’s Hollow Trail which provides access to the Watervliet Reservoir and the pedestrian/bicycle bridge over the Normanskill. The Fall is a wonderful time to enjoy the Western Turnpike Golf Course which has weekday and other specials for the rest of the season. Please call the Pro Shop at (518) 456-0786 or check the website for details (www.westernturnpike.com).

Wayde Bush of the Water Department

New Paving Equipment

Fall’s cooler weather is also a popular time for construction projects. In its first full year of inhouse paving, the Highway Department paved over nine miles of Town road using over 7,460 tons of paving materials. Highway Superintendent Steve Oliver estimates that the Town’s paving program saved $121,353.39 instead of using private contractors. Almost as important as dollars saved, the in-house paving program allows the Highway Department to accelerate its planned paving and to better schedule work to address special situations or unanticipated emergency events. If you have traveled over Route 158 over the past several months, you might have noticed contractors digging trenches for a new water line near the Town of Rotterdam boundary. This connection is now active and allows both towns to share water resources during emergencies. In the next year, the Town of Guilderland will construct a pump station which should allow for the Town’s purchase of larger quantities of water. This connection has allowed the Town to connect Route 158 residents who have poor quality or low quantity water to the Town’s water system. The Rotterdam connection is part of Water Superintendent Tim McIntyre’s plans to meet the Town’s ever-growing demand for water. This newest water source adds to the Town’s diverse water resources which include Town-owned wells, the Watervliet Reservoir (owned by City of Watervliet and located in the Town), and the City of Albany interconnect. Water Superintendent McIntyre has also hired a consultant to review options that would increase the water plant’s capacity to filter water from the Watervliet Reservoir. The construction site for the new 192 room hotel at Crossgates is a beehive of exciting activity with the infrastructure and foundation work well underway, and the planned enclosing of the five-story hotel in November. The new hotel, with no exits onto Western Avenue and no left entrance, was designed to have minimal traffic impact on Western Avenue. In response to resident inquiries about using the hotel for out of town families, friends and guests, the Town has been advised that the hotel’s opening is planned for the Fall of 2018. 4

Peter G. Barber - Town Supervisor For the second consecutive year, the Household Hazardous Waste Day and Confidential Document Shredding Day on September 23rd was a tremendous success, with 780 residents disposing of two full tractor trailer loads of hazardous waste and one full truck of shredded paper. Thanks to the hard work of Transfer Station and Highway Department employees, and despite the hot and muggy weather, there were no delays, with residents complimenting staff for their professional service. I especially want to thank residents for their generous donations which exceeded $1,000 for the Legion Riders’ Outreach Programs, Guilderland Animal Shelter, and Guilderhaven, and more than a truckload of donated food items for local food banks and pet supplies donated to Guilderhaven. At its September 19th meeting, the Town Board authorized the Police Department’s purchase of body cameras for all 26 uniformed officers, and vehicle cameras for 13 patrol cars. Chief Carol Lawlor informed the Board that the police had extensively tested various systems and that the equipment’s final cost was about 1/3rd of comparable systems. Chief Lawlor also stated that the Town’s police officers supported this initiative. The body camera videos are automatically downloaded to a server when the officer returns to Town Hall at the end of shift. I end by recognizing the professional work which has greatly improved the appearance of Town Hall. Building Superintendent Kevin Bernard and Max Batcher repainted the Town Hall sign, lamp posts, and benches, restored landscaping and lawn areas, and daily maintained the property. Sarah Jenkins of the Parks Department planted and carefully cared for beautiful flower beds and decorative plantings. I thank Kevin, Sarah, Max, and summer staff for their efforts. There is much more going on in your Town. Please check the Town’s website for more information about Town services, upcoming events, 2018 budget materials, and other items of interest, and to share any comments about the website. Thank you again for taking the time to read these notes. Peter G. Barber Town Supervisor

OUR TOWNE GUILDERLAND

with Susan Hennessy

Guilderland Food Pantry

What year did your business start?

What do you love the most about directing the pantry?

The Guilderland Food Pantry started in 1979, in a closet in the basement of Hamilton Union Presbyterian Church. It was started by Bertie Chesbrough to help those in Guilderland who received food stamps but found the stamps ran out before the end of the month, and they were still short on food. Bertie opened the pantry to supplement food stamps. The pantry is still in the basement of HUPC but now has expanded to 800 square feet. Due to increased enrollment and not being handicapped accessible, we are looking for a ground floor facility with double that amount of square feet.

I love the dedication that our 30-40 volunteers have to the pantry. We have people who come in every week day to answer the phone from our clients, field questions about eligibility, or to pack food for them. We have many people who make deliveries to our shut-in clients or shop for food. Others do data entry or event planning for fund raising. Some of our volunteers have been with the pantry for over 10 years and one who has been there for 16 years. I also love the interaction with our clients and hearing their stories of resilience. Many people have lost jobs or houses due to our changing economic trends, while others may have lost a job due to physical limitations. Each and every one of them have had to learn to survive these circumstances and I respect their ability to be creative in putting food on the table for their loved ones. I must also mention how grateful I am for the generosity of the people in Guilderland who donate financially to the pantry.

What is your phone number and website address? 518-930-1001 www.guilderlandfoodpantry.com guildfoodpantry79@gmail.com

What hours are you opened?

What is your biggest challenge?

We are opened from 9:30-11am Monday thru Friday. We also open Tuesday evening from 7-8pm for student volunteers to work.

The biggest challenge is keeping the shelves full of food which means continuous food drives in our community. We are also in a very tight space in the basement of a church. We need to be on ground level floor to accommodate our handicapped and elderly population.

How and why did you get into the business? My husband Mark Hopper and I both wanted to have a ministry that we could work on together after retirement to give back to the community. We both felt blessed to have a long, successful career in teaching and felt in our hearts that we should show that gratitude by serving others. It was at the same time Linda Jacobson stepped down as director of the pantry and my pastor at Christ Church Guilderland, Brian Rutherford, asked Mark and I if we were interested in becoming co-directors. We immediately said yes because it was just what we were looking for.

What do you want people to know about you? That there is a 5% poverty rate in Guilderland, with a population of 35,000 people. That means there are approximately 2,000 people in Guilderland who are in need of food and we are serving only 300. We need to reach the other 1,700 people and let them know we are here to help. No one in Guilderland should ever feel hungry, especially since this is a generous, giving community. I want people to know where we are and how we can help them.

How many people are you serving?

How can the community help?

We are currently serving about 120 families and 330 people. They can receive food, paper products and personal products every 4 weeks. The only requirement for receiving food is to live in the town of Guilderland. Our clients also receive a complete holiday meal every Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. We have an Angel Tree program at Christmas time for each client to receive a Christmas gift. Toys for Tots also supplies one gift for every child. We take great pride in serving our guests with compassion and respect.

Community members can help us out by organizing a food drive at their place of business, church, school or even at your personal parties. We’ve had a few people ask their guest to bring a cash gift or or food gift to their birthday parties. We are also in need of volunteers who have technology skills. We also are looking for people to deliver to our shut in families.

Is a Bird in the Nest Better? by Margaret C. Tabak

Guilderland, NY - I sometimes have clients come to see me who have read about “nesting” and have now fallen in love with that idea. While for some families this may be a great idea, so far I have not met any of them.

If you are considering this type of arrangement, here are some things to think about: Expense- Is maintaining the marital residence and a second residence feasible? Does it make sense to simply have two more modest residences? Who is going to be responsible for any necessary repairs, maintenance, and bills of the marital residence? Privacy- Will the other person respect your “space”? Or is there no place that is “yours”? Does your marital residence have enough bedrooms so you and your “ex” each have your own space or will you be forced to share the marital bedroom? What if either of you is dating someone? How many toothbrushes can comfortably be on the bathroom counter?

Nesting is where parents agree to have the children remain in the family home and the parents take turns living in that home with the children, as opposed to having the children rotating between two separate residences once the parents no longer live together. The parents will then have a second residence where the parent who does not have the children at the time lives. In other words, the parents change homes but the children always live in one place. This arrangement is sometimes chosen by parents as a means to provide minimal disruption in the children’s lives, so the children can maintain their routines with school and extracurricular activities, as well as neighborhood friendships. Nesting can occur during the transition of the separation or divorce, or until the children have reached an agreed upon age.

Roommates- Do you want to be roommates with your “ex”? Will you be cleaning up after them? Are they eating the food that you bought? This applies to both residences. Long Term- While initially this may smooth the transition for the children, there are several long term consequences to think about. What if you have a new partner or spouse? Do they go back and forth with you? Will this type of arrangement hinder your ability to move forward from your divorce? How will you decide who will remain in the marital residence once the nesting arrangement has ended? This is an arrangement that may work better short term than long term. If each parent can stay with a friend or relative on their “off ” time, the parents can separate without causing additional housing costs. This may give everyone some breathing room during a difficult time. Parents will need to set aside their marital differences and learn how to effectively communicate in order for this type of co-parenting plan to work. There must be substantial trust and teamwork between the parents. It is important that there be a comprehensive, written guideline and schedule, detailing all aspects of this arrangement.

From the Director: The Guilderland Library Foundation is hosting a fun-filled cocktail party that celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the founding of our cherished library and the 25th year of our library building. The celebration will be held the evening of Thursday, October 26 … at the library! The party starts at 6:30, and it will be a very special, Gatsby-themed cocktail reception. You’re encouraged to sport your Roaring ‘20s attire and enjoy the jazz atmosphere provided by the Skip Parsons Marmalade Quartet. There will be great hors d’oevres provide by Guilderland’s own Elegant Touch catering. Sponsored by Jaeger & Flynn Associates, Inc., The Rosenblum Companies, and Empire Wine & Liquor, this promises to be a grand celebration! This is a wonderful opportunity to come to the library, meet your neighbors, friends, and local community officials, and support the fundraising efforts of the Library Foundation. 1920s attire is entirely optional, but with the event coming just five days before Halloween, we’re hoping that some folks embrace the spirit of dressing up in 1920s style. To purchase your tickets, please go to bit.ly/JazzyGPL, or just stop in to the library. Tickets are $50 each, and a portion is tax deductible. Proceeds go to the Guilderland Library Foundation, which supports programming and events at the library, and also is beginning to raise money to update the library’s interior spaces. 25 years without new carpeting and furniture means that the facility is beginning to show it’s age, and may need a little help to spruce itself up a bit. Another way to support the library and to have fun at the same time is to take a ride to New York City with us as part of our Annual Holiday Bus Trip to NYC – on Saturday, December 9 -- sponsored by the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce and the Library. This is your opportunity to experience the city all dressed up for the holidays, and not have to deal with the hassle of driving down and back. (And the tolls, and the traffic, and the parking.) Relax and chat on the way down; nap on the way back. Here are the details: * Cost is $50 per person; you can reserve your seats at www.guilderlandlibrary.org/nyc * There will be two buses, but the seats fill quickly so reserve soon. * Buses leave GPL’s parking lot precisely at 7 am, and arrive NYC about 10 am. (PLEASE park your car along the Western Avenue side of the lot so your friends and neighbors using the Library can park closer to the building.) * You will be dropped off near Grand Central Terminal, on 42nd St, between Madison Avenue and Lexington Avenue. * You have all day to enjoy all the sights, sounds, and celebrations the city has to offer. * Return Trip: Buses will meet you at the drop-off point -- near Grand Central Terminal -- just before 7 pm. Rally ’round the Bus Captain in the “Cat in the Hat” hat. Please be on time! The buses will leave NYC at 7 pm, and get back to the GPL parking lot about 9:30 pm. * There is a Bus Captain on each bus; you’ll be given his/her cell phone number as well as a map of midtown Manhattan. from the

G FOCUS BUSINESS

Interview with James Verseput

OUR TOWNE GUILDERLAND

Principal of Hyperion Realty Advisors & Developer of Mill Hollow Apartments

How long have you been in business? Mill Hollow Apartments opened in 2016.

Where are you located? 48 Bavarian Way, Altamont, NY 12009

What is your phone number and website address? (518) 280-2430, MillHollowApartments.com

What hours are you open? Mon. – Thurs. 10 am – 6 pm; Fri. 9 am – 5 pm; Sat. 10 am – 3 pm

How and why did you develop Mill Hollow Apartments?

What do you love most about Mill Hollow?

Our development team could see the poten al in the site and layout of the former Bavarian Chalet, although it was in disrepair. We knew that there was a rich history with many Capital Region residents having fond memories of weddings and special events in that space. One of the reasons that the Bavarian Chalet was so successful was the beau ful view of the scenic pond and Helderberg Escarpment. When Steve of Buck Construc on saw the former Chalet, he realized that by reconfiguring the building, ge ng rid of the second floor, and changing the placement of rooms, we could create a 7,200-square foot clubhouse for our apartment community, 3-4x the size of an average apartment clubhouse. The indoor shared space gives residents a way to remain ac ve and enjoy the beau ful views year-round.

We envision a community where a resident can wake up on a summer morning, take a walk along the trail and then garden in the community garden, and visit the gym or yoga room as they desire. As the a ernoon temperatures rise, go for a dip in the pool. In the evening, the clubhouse could become a social gathering spot where residents enjoy the view of the sunset with friends then watch a movie. Before heading home, set back out for a walk around the pond and enjoy one of the community’s fire pits. In the winter, residents can stay fit using the exercise room and watch the snow fall on the mountains from the sun room.

What is special about Mill Hollow Apartments? Mill Hollow offers luxury apartments with breathtaking views. Spacious two-bedroom homes are set against a vista of the Helderberg Mountains with balconies or pa os where you can enjoy the outdoors. Nine-foot ceilings, large windows, and glass sliding doors lead to rooms filled with light. An open floor plan leads to a beau ful kitchen with granite countertops and an island or breakfast bar. The master bedroom has a large walk-in closet, a ceiling fan, and a bathroom with luxurious granite counters and a double sink. An expansive clubhouse with a vaulted ceiling provides a place to relax by the fireplace, watch a movie in the theater, and exercise in the fitness room or in-ground pool, and have coffee in the large community kitchen. Get fresh air on the walking trail around the scenic pond, which will take you to the fire pit and community garden.

What do you want the community to know about you? We are grateful for the posi ve recep on of Mill Hollow and the support of the Town of Guilderland. From the beginning, we knew this project had promise because of how beau ful the site is, with its loca on at the foothills of the Helderbergs. Guilderland is a great place to live and work, with a top-notch school district and a mix of offices and retail that provide opportuni es for employment, entertainment, and great shopping. Few projects like this exist in the town.

OUR TENTH ANNIVERSARY YEAR

GMA has been serving the community and teaching martial arts for ten years! As unusual as it is, this is why this month I dedicate my article space to, us! The reason we are successful and the reason I can do any of the things I do is because of my wonderful family. I am declaring them the Guilderland Martial Arts Family of the Decade and will have a special presentation at our Open House on October 21st. I am not quite sure what I would ever have done without them. I do know that none of the things I have written here would ever have existed and I certainly wouldn’t have been able to start GMA. They are my inspiration and my joy; when they are in class or just around the school it is a better place, I smile more and I am more motivated. Seven of them above are blackbelts, all of them participate in Taekwondo in one way or another and all of them represent what I am and have become. If you think about it, I bet many great aspects of your life are linked to your awesome families. Take the time to reflect as we approach Thanksgiving (forgive me for looking forward so early, but after all I am a school teacher). Then feel grateful and thank them. Happy anniversary to us!

GUILDERLAND MARTIAL ARTS 2563 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 690-1269 www.guilderlandmartialarts.com Master Rice owns Guilderland Martial Arts and holds a 5th degree Black Belt in Taekwondo. with Robert Rice

Guilderland Martial Arts

We understand it is your tenth anniversary, are you having What type of martial arts do you teach? any special events? We are a Taekwondo school. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that On Saturday October 21 from 10AM – 2PM we are having a Tenth Anniversary Open House. At 10AM any visitors can try a fun class. From 11AM – 2PM they can break a board, see demonstrations, have refreshments and chat with staff and students.

Where are you located? Guilderland Martial Arts is located at 2563 Western Turnpike between Hannaford and Town’N Country Lanes. Our phone number is (518) 690-1269 and our website is www.guilderlandmartialarts.com. We are also on Facebook and YouTube.

has a focus on powerful and fast kicks. This is perfect for aerobic exercise and self-defense. We complement the traditional training in Taekwondo with practical self-defense and situational awareness. We are members of USA Taekwondo, the US governing body for World Taekwondo. This organization represents a complete path to the Olympics and to the Kukkiwan, the World Taekwondo Headquarters. Some schools certify their blackbelts internally, but we acquire blackbelts from Kukkiwan Headquarters which allows our blackbelts to be recognized worldwide.

Are you known for anything special? I think we are well known for enhancing the character of our

So since it’s your tenth anniversary, you began in 2007, students in a friendly environment where parents and children can exactly when did you open? train together. Additionally, I think we are known for helping people We began in March of 2007 in a tiny little space with a pole in the middle of the training area. It was a tough time to start a business because in the fall our economy suffered what some analysts say was the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. Making it successfully to our tenth year is a great achievement for our family.

How and why did you get into the business? When I moved to the Capital District with my family in 2005 and began teaching high school math, I wanted to have a second job to better support my family. I had considered and applied for evening jobs ranging from retail to computer operator. Initially it was my wife Zeynep that pushed me and gave me the confidence to pursue our own school. Later, along with Zeynep, it was my sister Chris and husband Brian, owners of the Guilderland UPS store and my mom that helped get GMA going and continue to run the business with us today.

What makes your school unique? There are two main qualities that make us unique. When we established our school, we decided that our focus would be family martial arts. This is the first quality that makes us unique. This has always been what has differentiated us and what makes our school a relaxing, fun place to be. Our after school program fits this theme as we provide families with quality after school care that includes character enrichment, academic support and martial arts training. Our program is licensed to operate and receive students from the Guilderland School District’s transportation department. It also contributes to our unique position in the neighborhood since all of our family lives in Guilderland, all of our children have been educated in the Guilderland School District, I am a teacher at Guilderland High School, my wife works for the district and my sister owns and operates the UPS store with her husband. I believe this connection to our community makes us very unique in the region.

overcome challenges and achieve goals in the training area, at demonstrations, at school, at work and in our community.

Do you participate in competitions? We participate in local competitions, regional competitions and periodically national competitions. We have had have many students successful at the national level. Recently one of our instructors, Michelle who trains with Peak Performance in Scotia as well as at GMA, won a gold medal at nationals in sparring. It is really quite beneficial to our students to train side by side with national medalists and have an instructor who is a national champion and bound for international competition.

What do you love most about the business? All along, the best part of my jobs has been working with my family members. Almost all of my extended family in the area has trained at our school. The best part is training together. I simply love the focus, the physical training together, the excitement of seeing each other reach goals and sharing a common hobby. This is the best, my family is the best.

Now that you have been successfully operating for 10 years what are your goals? Our goal is to continue to retain our higher ranking belts and help them continue to develop their leadership skills while introducing new students to the sport. We want to continue to get new families to join and experience the joy of training together. Continue to improve the services we provide to our after school students.

SPARTAN -UP

I could never compare my experience to people battling cancer, suffering far more than I could ever imagine. There are parallels between battling cancer and the Spartan race. They are mentally and physically challenging and when you want to succeed, both require an enormous amount of courage, strength and perseverance. You can stare down both of these with optimism and determination and say I will not and cannot quit fighting. But the bottom line is health is our most precious gift. It doesn’t happen instantly, but healthy choices do. The race for health and wellness is winnable and achievable with a good attitude. We must become relentless to continue on despite difficulties and obstacles.

Conquering Obstacles: always place the mission first...always place the patient first Every October we are inspired and touched by the stories of those who fight to overcome breast cancer. We recognize the true unstoppable nature of the individuals who battle this ferocious disease. Cancer treatment is a lot like training for a marathon. You need a good team, good equipment, a plan of action, and most of all a good attitude. I personally learn everyday from my patients who are struggling with cancer about courage, optimism, hope, dedication, love and standing up to defeat and winning. But I never fully understood this epic battle of mind and body until this past year when I decided to train for and participate in the Spartan races – Sprint, Super and Beast. I have always been active and healthy and welcomed new and challenging work-outs. With the goal of finishing all 3 of these races in three months to achieve the ultimate Trifecta, I took top level, maximum-intensity training to the brink of insanity. I had the support of family, friends, peers and patients cheering me on which I was so grateful for and a plan of action. I singled out my goal and diverted all my energy to achieving it. The final Beast race, by far the hardest of the 3, a grueling 15 mile/32 obstacle race at Killington, VT., was humbling and informative, but it also inspired confidence. In my mind the outcome was never in question. I would finish the race or die trying. The only question was whether my body could perform the task my mind had designed for it. I was pretty sure I could, but I wasn’t positive. In my mind you just commit to something and get it done, no matter what. The compulsion to finish was so strong, creating overpowering emotions that were ideal for pushing to the end. When I finished, it was such a relief. The sense of accomplishment was immense and while my body felt fatigued, my mind could not have felt better. These tests of the body and mind are what help me make tough decisions about what it takes to be healthy and successful.

As a Dentist with superior credentials who practices Dentistry for Total Body Wellness, I am committed to empowering men and women of all ages to embrace a healthy lifestyle that can transform your health and well-being. There are three major obstacles for Oral health: • Information Obstacles – some individuals do not know what causes gum disease or tooth decay or what to do to prevent or treat these conditions. • Physical Obstacles – some individuals understand what needs to be done and are willing to do it but are not physically or financially able to. • Behavioral Obstacles – some individuals are able to do what needs to be done but resist doing it out of fear. RESTLESS LEG REMEDIES

By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling

Guilderland, NY - Do you remember that episode of Seinfeld where Kramer talked about the “Jimmie Legs”? What he was referring to was Restless Leg Syndrome. When I was pregnant with my son, I had a good case of the “Jimmie Legs” through the second and third trimester. I would wake every night with this strange feeling in my legs – it was a little tingly, prickly, a tightness like I needed to stretch and an irresistible urge to move. So I would get up and spend an hour doing lunges, squats, leg lifts and stretching to tire my legs out so I could go back to sleep. This nightly routine did get rather annoying but on a positive note, I did get to watch reruns of that sitcom Coach starring Craig Nelson as Hayden Fox, the football coach of Minnesota State University. That was a funny show. Remedies for Restless Leg Syndrome 1.

Check your Iron levels: Have your doctor order blood work to check your Ferritin level. Ferritin measures your stored iron in blood. The association of low iron stores and Restless Leg Syndrome has been well documented. ONLY if your levels are low should you supplement accordingly.

2.

Check your Folic Acid levels: This is commonly deficient in people with a family history of Restless Leg Syndrome and during pregnancy when folate stores are getting used up. Supplemental dose ranges from 35-60mg per day.

3.

Calcium and Magnesium Balance: Deficiencies in either one of these minerals can cause cramping in your muscles or tightness at night. Talk with us about your nutrition to ensure the proper balance is being maintained and if needed, then supplement accordingly.

4.

Botanicals with Sedative Properties: There are numerous plants that have properties that cause relaxation. Two of my favorites are Passionflower and Valerian. We carry a product call MyoCalm PM which is the perfect blend of calcium, magnesium, Passionflower, Valerian, Hops and Lemon Balm which help tremendously with muscle pain and cramping at night. Some of our patients swear by it.

5.

Exercise and Stretching: Make sure to include 30-60 minutes of walking or exercise into your daily routine. Stretching your legs for a few minutes before snuggling into bed can also be beneficial.

So if your spouse starts complaining that you are waking them with your bad case of the “Jimmie Legs” we are here to help navigate a solution. As always, if you have question about this article or a health condition feel free to call the Sports & Spinal Wellness Center for a free consultation at 518-869-3415. Please visit our website for more information at www.sportsandspinalwellness.com. We would be happy to be a part of your health care team.

FALL is a Great Time To Get Your House Ready For Cooler Temperatures Your home is your largest investment. Here are a few tips to get it ready for the cooler temperatures. FURNACES

ROOF, GUTTERS and DOWNSPOUTS

• Call a heating and cooling professional to inspect your furnace and clean ducts. • Change your furnace filter every month it is in use. • Install a programmable thermostat if you don’t already have one. • Keep the area around your furnace clear.

SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS

• Clean out gutters to clear away debris. • Consider installing leaf guards or gutter helmets to keep debris out, and put extensions on your downspouts to direct water away from your home. • Replace any worn roof shingles or tiles. • Check flashing to make sure that no water can enter your home.

FIREPLACES

• Test your detectors to make sure they work. Replace fire extinguishers that are older than 10 years. • Replace the batteries when you change the clocks - it’s a great way to remember to do it every year. • Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and/or water heater, and on each floor of your home.

PLUMBING

• Have your chimney professionally cleaned if it hasn’t been for a while. • Now is the time to chop or purchase firewood, and order propane if you use it. • Store firewood at least 30 feet from your house.

EQUIPMENT

FOUNDATION WINDOWS AND DOORS • Use weather stripping around doors and caulk around windows to prevent cold air from coming in. • Replace cracked glass in windows or doors.

• Know where your water main is in case of emergency! • Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. • Drain air conditioner pipes and turn off the water shut-off valve if there is one.

• Drain gas from your lawnmower. • Service or get a tune-up for your snow blower. • Clear and store warm weather gardening equipment.

LANDSCAPING AND OUTDOORS

• Rake away debris and vegetation from the foundation, and seal up gaps and cracks.

• Trim tree branches that hang too close to the house. • Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks.

Enjoy the crispness of the Fall season, and with your house in good shape, the cooler temperatures will be a breeze!
