notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE

5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org Guilderland, NY - Autumn’s arrival should soon bring a change to cooler weather, with colorful leaves and outdoor activities at Town parks, and apples, pumpkins, and autumn produce available at local businesses and farm stands. It is also a great time to enjoy the Town’s nearly 30 miles of hiking trails in Tawasentha Park, Albany Pine Bush Preserve, Bozen Kill Preserve, Black Creek Marsh Wildlife Management Area, and Vosburgh Trails Open Space. The Town just added interactive mapping to the Town website. The mapping application gathers geographical information system (GIS) data from public sources, including zoning, property tax data, and environmental information. The GIS mapping provides residents with detailed property data and assists the Town in its review of proposed development projects, infrastructure planning, and capital improvements. The Town’s GIS interactive mapping was put together and is managed by Zeynep Tas, Town Senior Planner.

You can access the GIS mapping at www.townofguilderland.org/ planning-department/pages/town-guilderland-interactive-mapping. After acknowledging the Town’s disclaimer about possible errors and omissions there, you can search any property by street address, tax identification number, or owner name. The information includes the property owner’s name, tax parcel number, assessed value, parcel dimensions and area, contour lines at 2 foot intervals, and zoning district, with an embedded link to allowed uses. You can also use tools to generate basic map layers of streets, municipal boundaries, points of interest, and also dynamic layers of parcel boundaries, zoning districts, flood zones, agricultural districts, and wetlands. You can also use interactive tools to measure distances, calculate area, and obtain longitude and latitude coordinates. We hope to soon add more layers of GIS property data as they are gathered and converted for GIS mapping. We are also working on GIS mapping of hiking trails in Town parks and open space, and the Town’s golf course. The goal is creating a smart phone app of the wide-variety of trails in the Town. We will also add conceptual bike and hiking trail maps which, in neighborhood plans and studies, were recommended as establishing non-motorized links among residential neighborhoods and with schools, library, YMCA, local businesses and points of interest. The GIS interactive mapping is the latest step in the Town’s continuing efforts to share publically available information on its website. Over the past year, the Town website added video on demand and indexed recordings of Town, Planning and Zoning Board meetings (www. 4

Mid-October 2018 |

Peter G. Barber - Town Supervisor townofguilderland.org/minutes-and-agenda) and posted copies of pending land use applications on the Town Board and Planning Board webpages. The board meetings are also broadcast live on Verizon FIOS Channel 34 and Spectrum Channel 1303. By now, you should have received the Town’s Fall Newsletter which includes a street schedule with dates for leaf vacuuming and leaf bag pick-up. The schedule is available on the Highway Department webpage. To help Highway employees with vacuuming leaves and keep roadways clear for safe passage, please rake leaves and grass to the road’s edge, and not on the road surface. Please also take care to keep storm drains clear of leaves and debris. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call the Highway Department at (518) 8615108. Town Assessor Karen Van Wagenen and her staff thank you for signing and returning property description reports which are an essential part of the Town’s goal of an accurate 2019 reassessment. As of October 1st, more than 56% of residential property owners had returned the completed report. Andrew Farbstein, the Town’s reassessment consultant, commented that he was not aware of any other municipality exceeding a 20% response rate. There is still time to return your completed report by October 31st, by mail or email to assessors@togny. org. Each returned report helps save time and money in the Assessor’s efforts to prepare a proper and fair revaluation. If you missed the public presentations by the Assessor and Town consultant about the revaluation process, you can view the PowerPoint and reassessment timeline on the Assessor webpage. More public meetings will soon be announced. If you have questions about the property report or reassessment process, please call the Assessor’s Office at (518) 356-1980. On Tuesday, October 16th, residents in the Guilderland Central School District may vote on a $42.7 million capital construction project. The proposition provides for upgrades to infrastructure in the district’s seven school buildings and safety, security, and technology improvements. More information about the proposition is available at www.guilderlandschools.org/capital-construction-project-referendumset-for-oct-16/ There is much more going on in your Town. Please check the Town’s website for more information about Town services, upcoming events, 2019 budget materials, and sign up for Nixle® alerts, and please share any comments or suggestions about the website. Thank you again for taking the time to read these notes. Peter G. Barber, Town Supervisor

DOES PAIN EQUATE TO TISSUE DAMAGE? Part 1: My most humiliating day ever! By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling

Guilderland, NY - How boring would life be if we can’t laugh at ourselves and find the humor amidst the craziness? This is my tale of finding humor in a moment of humiliation. About two months ago, I had an episode of acute lower back pain. I was leaning over to put something in my bag after playing basketball and BOOM – I felt something slip in my back. Since I was familiar with this type of pain from my previous episodes (and we work with patients with this daily), I knew how to manage it: ice, cold laser, tape, modalities, bracing and treatment from my amazing chiropractor, Dr. Amanda Boccio. Over the next 2 weeks, it gradually got better to where the pain was completely gone. I felt amazing. Then I had this great idea to go pull weeds and spread mulch. BAD IDEA! My ego got the best of me with too much too soon. That night I was changing my clothes and BOOM, it happened again. But this time it was much worse than ever before. I knew immediately that the disc just herniated. I couldn’t stand upright and had radiating pain into my left leg and thigh.

that my legs were wet. My initial thought was “how much was I sweating?” Apparently, when I passed out, I had lost bladder control and peed my pants and on my husband. OH! That’s why he put me down - oops! This was a true test to the strength of our marriage! The nurse called the doctor back into the room, I panicked because there is a condition called Cauda Equina Syndrome in which you lose bladder and bowel control due to too much spinal cord compression. I asked the doctor if this was happening to me, he said no, because I didn’t lose bowel control…yet. In that second, I could feel that I was going to lose my bowels. I begged my husband to drag me to the bathroom…sparing any pride I had left. I made it to the bathroom… just in time.

Now for the crazy part. We made it to the Bone & Joint Center, but I have to keep leaning on a wheelchair to keep pressure off my spine. I got to see the doctor, he wrote the scrip for pain meds and we started to leave. But I couldn’t move! I screamed for my husband to pick me up to get the pressure off my spine. He couldn’t put me down or I’d start screaming again. I began sweating profusely and I could feel myself starting to black out. The last thing I remember was saying “I’m passing out!” ( Just a side note, this happens to every time I’m in extreme pain – strange I know. More stories for another day). When I woke up, I was sitting in the wheelchair. Within seconds I started to feel the awful pain. So I screamed for my husband to pick me up again. I’m confused as to why he put me down in the first place - doesn’t he know by now that the pain is much worse when I’m sitting? Being the super husband he was that day, he picked me back up. This is when I felt

all that pain and drama? As physicians, we deal with this daily. Some patient’s symptoms do not match what the tests and images show. Some things are difficult to explain because, based on results, there may not be anything abnormal. In next month’s article, I’ll explain more about pain, inflammation and tissue damage. So stay tuned for Part 2. And as an update on my attempt to save face with the orthopedic center, despite my humiliation; I did treat the nurses and staff to a healthy dose of chocolate. The doctor received a bottle of scotch as a token of appreciation for taking care of me. That wasn’t my best first impression but I’m sure they will never forget Dr. Kim Keeling.

By now, the ambulance team was banging on the bathroom door. Someone handed me a lovely pair of blue paper shorts to change into. They finally got me out of there in style with a personal escort service from the Albany PD, firetrucks and ambulance. I can proudly say that I bet there is a short list of people who actually left the orthopedic center in an ambulance… The next day I was already scheduled for my I should get some sort of “Most Memorable lumbar MRI. (Since I had so many reoccurring Patient Award” for this! I begged the paramedic episodes, I wanted to see exactly what was to give me something to stop the pain, so he going on). But I couldn’t get out of bed. Every started an IV and suggested Fentanyl. I’d never time I tried to move, I would get excruciating heard of it but it sounded beautiful, let’s do it! pain in my back and down my leg. There was It did nothing. Once in the ER, I was given a no way I was going to make it through that cocktail of morphine, hydrocodone, diazepam MRI without the some pain medication. and steroids. Finally there was some relief. I Meanwhile, since any amount of pressure on managed to make it through my MRI. I was my spine increased the pain tremendously, I nervous to see the images and results because I was sure there would be a had to have my husband hold tension on my left leg by pulling on it. Here is disc completely blown out. The results came back and showed a small disc the scene at my house: I’m screaming in pain, my daughter was sitting next herniation at the L3-4 level (the new injury), degeneration at L4-5 (which to me, terrified and not knowing what to do, my husband pulling on my leg means it is an old injury) and a tear in the disc at L5-S1. You have to be and getting annoyed with me (this is really going to put a wrench in his day), kidding me…that’s it? All that pain for those results. While I knew that I and my son was in his bedroom cruising Instagram - oblivious to anything herniated the L3-4 disc based on my symptoms, I expected it to be much going on. This could have been an episode of a sitcom. We debated about worse. calling an ambulance…but no, I thought I could make it to Urgent Care to get the medication. So my husband bear hugged me and hoisted me out of So what is moral of my humiliating story? PAIN DOES NOT ALWAYS bed, down the stairs and to the car. CORRELATE WITH TISSUE DAMAGE! So what happened that caused

LITIGATION ≠ REGRETS by Margaret C. Tabak, Esq.

Guilderland, NY - I often deal with cases that could be resolved faster, less expensively, and with far less acrimony if the motivation behind the case was something other than regret, and trying to Monday morning quarterback your life. I can promise you that litigation is not a cure for regret. Think of these instances: 1. Poor Investment- If you or your spouse bought swampland in Florida and have now lost your money, I can probably not get it back for you. 1. There may be no money to recoup. While you may be able to get a judgment, it probably is only a piece of paper that you can hang on the wall and not real currency; and/ or 2. There was no bad intent. If someone has “wastefully dissipated” an asset, that can be addressed in property distribution. However, that is generally a gross misuse of funds such as gambling, drugs, or complete mismanagement. Bad luck or poor investment strategy is generally not “refundable.” 2. Co-Parent- Most everyone has a relationship or two that she wishes didn’t happen as the person turned out to be a poor choice. Unfortunately, some of those relationships result in children, whether on purpose or not. Unless someone is a danger to a child, you are probably stuck with this person as a co-parent. While we can litigate until the cows come home, I cannot change the person or wave a magic wand and make them disappear. While you may regret this person was ever in your life, it is probably better for you and your child(ren) to at least carry on with this person as if she

was your business partner and your business is raising your child. This may take some of the emotion out of it, and allow both of you to, if not co-parent, at least parallel parent. 3. Withholding money- Parents often have to share expenses: health insurance, medical, child care or extracurricular. Whether it is power, control, revenge or some other emotion, it often manifests in failing to reimburse the other person or contribute your portion. This often leads to a revolving door in court. While you may feel that you are getting back at the other parent or teaching him a lesson, you are wasting your time, taxpayer time and resources (courts, judges), and will be, more often than not, unsuccessful in court. While you may feel writing that check for $10 or $20 or even $100 will kill you, the chance of that occurring is nil to none. See #2, accept the other parent and do what you are supposed to do. Civility and maturity are two things that should not be out of style, and my hope, especially for our children, is to have stable, loving, and non-toxic households. Before you hire a lawyer, you might want to ask her if that is her goal, or is it fueling your revenge? If revenge is what you want, be prepared to pay-emotionally and financially.

BE YOU.

Guilderland, NY - As I grow older and slowly get closer to testing for the level of Grand Master, I spend an increasing amount of time reflecting and contemplating my life and life in general. I have been reflecting on the things I have done, in certain interactions with others, both recent By Master Rice and long ago. I have been especially interested in the ways I have reacted or behaved in uncomfortable situations. During this reflection I often encounter memories of situations followed by dissatisfaction with my behavior. I typically do not overreact in situations, I underreact. Overreacting is usually bad for those around you. Under-reacting is usually bad for you. Suppose you are at a gathering and a person you know says something that makes you uncomfortable. Maybe it is even a comment that is derogatory or sarcasm to another. You let it go, maybe move away, keep the peace. Maybe you are thinking that your perception is wrong or that it’s ok because they are just joking, especially since some of the people around are laughing or nodding. Maybe even the person to whom the comment was directed seems fine. I can remember this happening to me many times as the subject and the observer. The realization of this character quality of mine has caused change, a positive change as I grow. Whether we are white belts, blackbelts,

masters or grand masters, we all grow. The point here is that I have realized that in the past I yielded to my discomfort and let things go when I should not have because I was in what I thought was a welcoming, friendly environment. We tell our children to stand up and say something when they see someone bullying rather than ignore a situation. We encourage them to recognize and react to bullying or negativity, rather than letting it go. The argument that everything and everyone seems fine is not valid. People are very good at hiding their reactions, especially when they are the victim. If you are uncomfortable, there is a reason. Since there is a reason, say something or do something. You may be with someone that is close in some way and you want to keep the peace. That’s ok, tell them you are uncomfortable, don’t be nasty, be respectful but honest. If they really are as close as you perceive, they will respond and change. If they can’t handle that and they react poorly or continue simply don’t see them. You must cut out the negativity in your life. Just be you. You don’t have the time to experience negativity. If you find yourself participating in events with people that you do because you always have but the experience is often negative, that means you are there because you feel like you have to be, not because you want to be. Cut it out of your life. Be you and stop being what you think you were supposed to be. Focus on the positive aspects of your life and what you can do. Focus on your family and the positive ways you grow together. Do not waste a single moment more on negative situations. Reflect, be confident, say something, be you.

Year-end Tax STraTegieS by

Douglas bauer

Guilderland, NY - Earlier this year, we discussed the importance of making income tax planning a year-round activity. This month, we offer reminders of some strategies that have year-end deadlines as it relates to the 2018 personal income tax year. • If you are not on pace to achieve your target level of contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan (up to a maximum $18,50 for 401k or similar accounts, plus an additional $6,000 ‘catch up’ for those who are age 50 or older), you may wish to contact your employer’s payroll department to increase your contributions for your remaining paychecks. You may even find it makes sense to contribute your entire paycheck (after other mandatory withholdings) so as to maximize your contribution for the year. • For tax year 2018, the standard deduction amounts are $24,000 for married-filing-jointly, $18,000 for head of household, and $12,000 for individual taxpayers and married-filing-separately. If you find that your itemized deductions (which may include, but are not limited to, medical expenses, property taxes, sales taxes, mortgage interest, state income tax payments, and charitable donations) are close to the standard deduction, you may wish to consider pre-paying some 2019 expenses, such as charitable donations. By “bunching deductions”, those who typically are eligible only for the standard deductions may be able to itemize deductions every other year, thereby realizing some income tax savings. • Certain high-deductible health insurance plans allow for the ability to make tax-deductible contributions to a Health Savings Account (HSA) as an above-the-line deduction, which means one need not itemize deductions in order to benefit.

Additionally, contributions made via payroll deduction are not subject to FICA tax. For 2018, eligible persons may contribute as much as $3,450 for individual coverage or $6,900 for family coverage (plus an additional $1,000 for people age 55 or older). Be sure to coordinate this strategy with any contributions your employer may have made on your behalf. Please note that HSA contributions are not permitted if you are enrolled in Medicare Part A or Part B. • Depending on your personal tax situation, you may wish to realize capital gains (by selling appreciated securities) or capital losses (by selling securities which are worth less than what you paid for them). Many investors may be able to realize capital gains and pay a tax rate of 0% on their federal return if they are in a 12% or lower marginal income tax bracket. Other investors may benefit from utilizing realized losses to either offset realized gains (no limit) or to offset ordinary income (up to $3,000 per year, with any remainders carrying forward to future years). Please consult your tax preparer and/or financial advisor to determine if any of the above strategies are appropriate for your overall financial situation.

Is there a link between Breast Cancer and Oral Health? Guilderland, NY - In the United States, 1 out of 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Worldwide, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women.

Did you know that there is a link between oral health and breast cancer? According to research conducted at the University of Buffalo, women with gum disease-especially those who smoke- may be at greater risk of developing breast cancer. Cancer can happen to anyone and the side effects of treatment don’t discriminate. Some side effects can include: •

Dysguesia - metallic, salty foul or rancid taste sensations

Xerostomia - dryness of the mouth or thickened saliva

Stomatitis - mouth sores and ulcers

Oral mucositis - inflammation and ulcers of gums, tongue and mouth tissues

Dysphagia - difficulty or discomfort swallowing

Dental Caries - cavities

Infections of the mouth and/or throat

The beginning of a breast cancer battle can be confusing and overwhelming, but it’s important to talk to your dentist about your diagnosis and treatment plan. During treatment the pH of your mouth will change entirely and extra steps are needed to fight cavities and maintain good dental health through treatment. A regular routine of brushing and flossing may not be enough. Talk to your dentist about your diagnosis as soon as possible. You may need to schedule a dental appointment prior to beginning treatment, especially if you haven’t had a check-up recently.

effects of treatments. A clean mouth, which includes your teeth, gums and tongue, helps protect you from mouth infections and helps to prevent issues such as cavities or teeth sensitivity. It’s more important than ever to practice optimal oral hygiene by brushing, flossing, and rinsing your mouth with water throughout the day to keep away bacteria. Staying hydrated and modifying your diet can also help keep both your mouth and body healthy. Seeing your dentist prior to treatment can help address any oral health concerns before your immune system is suppressed and certain dental procedures would no longer be safe for you. Even if you aren’t experiencing any pain or sensitivity, schedule and attend your regular dental cleaning and exams to stay on course with preventative dental care:

n Undergo any dental procedures you may need before treatment starts and the immune system’s and body’s ability to heal itself is compromised. n Allow time to heal from any dental treatment before beginning cancer treatment, if possible. Your dentist will recommend how much healing time you need between dental procedures and receiving cancer treatment. n You, your dentist and your physician are a TEAM. Your dentist should be aware of your treatment plan to better serve your needs, and your cancer team should know how treatment impacts your mouth. It’s important to talk about any symptoms you experience with your dentist and cancer care team. When side effects are left unaddressed or are not able to be managed, larger problems could develop. Depending on the level of severity, your doctor may need to alter your treatment. It’s possible to prevent breast cancer or manage some of the oral health side effects of treatment by taking extra good care of the mouth, teeth and gums and staying on course with professional dental care.

The First Ever Dual-Branded Tru By Hilton and Homewood Suites By Hilton in the Country Celebrates Official Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony Onsite at Crossgates!

-- New dual-branded hotel represents significant step in the continued evolution of the Crossgates Complex through mixed-use development -Guilderland, NY - Crossgates and Homewood Suites and Tru by Hilton (NYSE: HLT), today celebrated the new on-site 192-room dual-branded Homewood Suites and Tru Albany-Crossgates with a special ribbon-cutting ceremony. Located onsite at Crossgates, this hotel is the first dual-branded Homewood Suites and Tru by Hilton in the country and features two separate areas designed for each brand, unique public spaces designed to promote social connectivity, a swimming pool, fitness center and an outdoor sport court. “We are incredibly excited to partner with Hilton on the opening of the very first dual-branded Tru and Homewood Suites property in the country, our second Hilton hotel across our portfolio of shopping, dining, and entertainment complexes throughout the northeast,” said Stephen J. Congel, Chief Executive Officer, Pyramid Management Group, LLC. “The addition of this dynamic hotel at Crossgates further solidifies its reputation as a premier shopping, dining and entertainment destination and gives guests another reason to extend their stay in Guilderland and Albany County.” The multi-brand concept provides larger and enhanced communal areas and amenities than what would be standard at a standalone property, benefiting both business and leisure travelers. The hotel has a mix of unique offerings – each catering to the needs of their respective guests – including designated lobby and dining areas. The property also has a variety of shared amenities including 24-hour fitness center, indoor pool, outdoor grills, sport courts and airport shuttle. The hotel offers a meeting room, and in partnership with Crossgates, additional meeting space can be found at several venues within the center. “We are extremely pleased to see the completion of this innovative hotel concept in Guilderland,” said Supervisor Peter G. Barber. “This dual-brand hotel will enable residents and businesses to offer in-Town accommodations for families and guests, and will further the Town’s efforts to promote economic development and increase sales for local businesses.”

Developed and owned by Pyramid Management Group, who was recognized by Hilton as the 2017 Developer of the Year, this property will allow guests extra perks at Crossgates, included added savings and conveniences. This includes a Crossgates “Stay & Save” savings pass received at check-in, full of extra savings at various shops, restaurants and entertainment destinations within Crossgates. A “Shop & Drop” delivery service, bringing shopping bags right from the guests hands over to the hotel so that visitors can continue on with ease, will make their trip that much simpler. “We’re delighted to open Homewood Suites by Hilton and Tru by Hilton Albany Crossgates and offer business and leisure travelers visiting Albany with an innovative and value-driven lodging experience,” said Adam Gollub, General Manager, Aimbridge Hospitality. “Blending these two categoryleading brands and their signature, yet unique, identities under one roof furthers propels our commitment to providing quality lodging options to meet a wide variety of styles, travel needs and desired price points.” For more information or to make a reservation, visit HOMEWOOD SUITES BY HILTON Albany Crossgates Mall or TRU BY HILTON Albany Crossgates Mall or call (518) 704-4040 or (518) 704-4010.

From the Director of the Guilderland Public Library

F

What a grand and glorious Gala it was!

or the past several months, the Guilderland Library Foundation had been working on putting together its third annual gala, “A Novel Affair, Chapter III: The Masquerade Ball” I am pleased to report that it was a stunning success. It was held on Saturday, September 29, at the Albany Country Club, and EVERYONE – especially the two honorees, Paul Grondahl and Gregory Maguire – enjoyed a delightful evening. In her remarks, Foundation President Rosemary Revoir spoke about why these two “hometown writers” were honored: This evening’s Novel Affair is a special one because in the past we’ve celebrated leaders of the library and business community, but we now turn our attention to literature: This is, after all, “A Novel Affair.” So we honor two marvelous local writers: Paul Grondahl and Gregory Maguire … and they represent the best of nonfiction and fiction. While neither really needs an introduction, some highpoints must be hit: Who else but Gregory Maguire could transform one of literature’s most hated and feared fictional characters into a sympathetic, lovelorn, misunderstood woman? Gregory did so in his book “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West”, which, since 2003 as “Wicked,” is now the seventh-longest running play in Broadway history. It’s been running since October 2003. Next month, it’s a 15-year run, with no sign of

slowing any year soon. But “Wicked” is just one among the dozens of Gregory’s books. In reviewing his backlist, I had to wonder if the titles some of his others – “Three Rotten Eggs,” “Out of Oz,” and maybe “The Good Liar” -- were reflective of the politics of his hometown, Albany. Our non-fiction honoree, Paul Grondahl, by his own admission, wrote more than 8,000 stories for the Times Union. Even though he grew up in Tacoma, Washington, simply by chronicling the Capital District’s activities in some 8 million words, he became part of the fabric of the community. Even though he “retired” from the TU last year, he continues to open our eyes to the reality around us. Paul’s writing – the quality of his reporting – his ability to give us the unvarnished who, what, where, etc. – what made Paul’s reporting so trustworthy, is summed up in his own words from his TU retirement address: “My work was never about me. I was a reporter, an observer, a witness – a conduit for the first draft of history.” Speaking for the Foundation, I thank everyone who attended, with particular gratitude to the community members and businesses that donated items for the Live and Silent Auctions. If you want to see pictures from the Gala, please visit the Foundation’s Facebook page at www.facebook.com/ GuilderlandLibraryFoundation. Regards, Tim

YOUR GUILDERLAND REAL ESTATE SPECIALIST FALL is a Great Time To Get Your House Ready For Cooler Temperatures Your home is your largest investment. Here are a few tips to get it ready for the cooler temperatures:

FOUNDATION Rake away debris and vegetation from the foundation, and seal up gaps and cracks.

FURNACES Call a heating and cooling professional to inspect your furnace and clean ducts. Change your furnace filter every month it is in use. Install a programmable thermostat if you don’t already have one. Keep the area around your furnace clear.

SMOKE AND CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS Test your detectors to make sure they work. Replace fire extinguishers that are older than 10 years. Replace the batteries when you change the clocks - it’s a great way to remember to do it every year. Install a carbon monoxide detector near your furnace and/or water heater, and on each floor of your home.

FIREPLACES Have your chimney professionally cleaned if it hasn’t been for a while. Now is the time to chop or purchase firewood, and order propane if you use it. Store firewood at least 30 feet from your house.

PLUMBING Know where your water main is in case of emergency! Insulate exposed plumbing pipes. Drain air conditioner pipes and turn off the water shut-off valve if there is one.

WINDOWS AND DOORS Use weather stripping around doors and caulk around windows to prevent cold air from coming in. Replace cracked glass in windows or doors.

LANDSCAPING AND OUTDOORS Trim tree branches that hang too close to the house. Seal driveways, brick patios and wood decks.

ROOF, GUTTERS and DOWNSPOUTS Clean out gutters to clear away debris. Consider installing leaf guards or gutter helmets to keep debris out, and put extensions on your downspouts to direct water away from your home. Replace any worn roof shingles or tiles. Check flashing to make sure that no water can enter your home.

Enjoy the crispness of the Fall season, and with your house in good shape, the cooler temperatures will be a breeze!

EQUIPMENT Drain gas from your lawnmower. Service or get a tune-up for your snow blower. Clear and store warm weather gardening equipment.
