Read 2,000 books, and walk to the moon! Do your New Year’s Resolutions involve reading and exercising more often? If so, then we are the place for you! Winter Reading Challenge 2019 is here and I want to invite YOU to participate! Last year we, as a library community, read 1,577 books during the month of January! This year we’ve upped our goal to 2,000 books! The nationwide goal is 75,000 books and if we are one of the top performing libraries, then we will receive a chunk of the $35,000 prize donated by Shark Tank investor Mark Cuban!
We are also participating in a 10-county wide effort called the Library Moonwalk! We are trying to collectively walk the 239,000 miles to the moon, by logging our time or distance walked here: https:// librarymoonwalk.sals.edu/ but hurry, as of this writing, our library users were over 100,000 miles, and nearly halfway to the moon! Maybe we will be able to walk to the moon and back! While you are at the website, you can click on a list of health programming at libraries across the region, or click for access to Medline Plus, a reliable government database of up to date health information!
So, sign up on Beanstack and log your books! If you have an account from last year (or from the summer) all you need to do is log back in and register for the Winter Reading Challenge. If you do not have an account, simply make one on Beanstack and you will automatically be registered for the program! Visit our Beanstack page here: https:// guilderlandlibrary.beanstack.org/reader365 EVERY BOOK you read (or listen to) between January 1-31 counts! Yes, even all those kids’ books you may be reading to your children, grandchildren, etc.! In fact, sign up your kids and grandkids on your account too and you can log the books for all of you at the same time! Also, be sure to download the Beanstack Tracker app so you can easily scan a book’s ISBN to log it! If you are like me, then having this goal of 2,000 books really helps you to read more! Each time you log a book in, you can see how far our community has come towards the goal! It’s fun and addictive! Join us on Friday, February 1st to celebrate all the books we read during the Winter Reading Challenge! Stop by any time between 5 and 6:30 p.m. for hot chocolate, coffee, and some sweet treats! Share some of your favorite books and discover the other great reading programs we’ll be offering this year! All ages!
If you’ve had enough walking or reading, and you are a teen, then we also have our third annual Teen Winter Writing Contest to tell you about! We are once again collaborating with the Clifton ParkHalfmoon Public library to host the Teen Winter Writing Contest! Anyone in grades 6-10 can submit either prose and/or poetry, which will be read and judged by local authors and librarians. We also would like to see plays, screenplays, and graphic novel submissions. The deadline for submissions is February 11th. Please visit https:// guilderlandlibrary.org/tww for a complete set of rules. All first place winners will have the unique opportunity to workshop their pieces with Donna Liquori, Bibliofiles columnist for the Times Union. All participants are invited to attend a reception on Wednesday, March 6th at 6:30 p.m., at the Clifton Park-Halfmoon Public Library. First-place winners will have the opportunity to read their work at the reception. All that reading, writing, and walking may tire you out, so come and recharge with a free concert! On Sunday, February 10th, at 2 p.m., Jim Gaudet and the Railroad Boys will bring their infectious bluegrass and Americana sound to the Helderberg Room at GPL! Enjoy this well-known band’s fantastic song writing and great harmonies. Like all of our concerts, this one is free. Come early to make sure you get a seat!

Things are really cooking at GPL! Well, actually, they are cooking at home, and being brought in to the library. Let me explain. On Wednesday, January 16th, it’s time for another monthly meeting of our cookbook club, at 7 p.m. This month’s cookbook is “Smitten Kitchen Every Day,” by Deb Perelman. Stop by the reference desk and take a photo of an interesting recipe on your smartphone—or use our copy machine. Take the recipe home, prepare it, and bring it in to share on the 16th! We’ll talk about—and sample—readers’ favorite recipes from the book, based on Perelman’s popular Smitten Kitchen blog. You may even win a copy of that month’s cookbook! In February, we’ll be using “Baking With Success,” by Gail Sokol. We will get to actually meet and chat with the chef/author, who lives in Slingerlands. Register online or by calling the library. Every 56 days, most of us can give blood to the American Red Cross, which of course uses it to save lives. So, every 56 days, we have a blood drive here at GPL! Our next drive will be Tuesday, January 15th, from 12-6. Feel free to visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment, or try being a walk-up donor if you’d prefer. The life you save may be your own, or that of one of your friends, neighbors, or loved ones. Or it may just be a fellow human being to whom you have no (previous) connection. There is an urgent need for blood donations at this time.
Take your Child to the Library Day is Saturday, February 2nd, and we’ve got lots of special activities planned. Throughout the day the Guilderland Police Department will be here for Child Safe Fingerprinting. There will also be craft projects and a scavenger Hunt for kids. And you won’t want to miss the puppet show @ 2:00, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, starring The Puppet People. Our very own librarian, Josalyn Wilder, whom you may know from her fantastically popular 3 Little Birds music and movement story time, is coming to our art gallery! “Rebel Bloom: Paintings by Josalyn Wilder-- The art of blooming into yourself and growing your way!” will be on view Monday February 4th-Thursday March 14th. Josalyn’s colorful paintings, often with a floral theme, are just the thing to brighten up midwinter. Matchbook! Feeling lonely this Valentine’s Day? Your trusty librarian has you covered! Fill out your “book dating profile”, and we’ll put you on a blind date with a book! Profiles will be accepted from 1/31 - 2/12. Your book will be waiting for you on the hold shelf from 2/14 - 2/21. On Wednesday, February 13th, it’s “Gal” entine’s Day! Bring your gal pal, your friend, your sister, your daughter, and/or your mother, for a night of chocolate pretzels and strawberries, along with crafting and waffles! Adults and teens. Please bring an apron to protect your clothes, and register online or by calling us.
Medicare 101: A New User’s Guide will be offered on Thursday, January 17th from 1-3:30 p.m. Join Janet Kiffney, a certified Medicare Counselor with HIICAP (New York State’s Health Insurance Information Counseling and Assistance Program), who will present an unbiased “soup to nuts” program on Medicare and answer all your questions, including what does Medicare pay for, how are prescriptions covered, and just what is Medicare Part A? The library will be closed in honor and celebration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 21st. Another community celebration is the Gallery Showing of the Community Artbook Project, taking place on Saturday, January 26th from 10-1. Between October and the end of December, patrons were able to take home blank notebooks, and fill them with art—drawings, paintings, writing, photography, etc. On the 26th, we’ll show off these creations, before adding them to the Library’s collection! Sounds like a lot of fun. Kids, get out of the house on a cold Sunday afternoon to take in a free showing of Disney’s Cinderella! Sunday January 27th at 2 p.m.!

notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE
5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org
Guilderland, NY - The safety of residents and Town employees is most important at all times but our winter weather and reduced visibility gives rise to special concerns. Please keep a safe distance from Highway Department plows and Parks Department sidewalk plows. Please also help firefighters by keeping fire hydrants free of snow and ice, and making sure that your house street number is visible from the road. Please also be mindful of overnight and other parking restrictions. Town parks are open for winter hiking, snowshoeing, groomed crosscountry skiing, and sledding. Please check the Parks Department’s webpage or call the Parks Office at (518) 456-3150 for current conditions and activities. At this year’s outset, I’d like to update residents on a number of significant actions which should conclude or advance this year.
Reevaluation 2019 At the end of 2018, the Town completed the first part of the 2019 revaluation of real property, including the record-setting receipt of signed property inventory forms from nearly 60% of residential property owners and 30% of commercial property owners. The Assessor and the Town consultant are now in the next phase of the revaluation process, including confirming proposed changes, reviewing relevant recent sales data, and preparing modeling programs that use each property’s objective factors to determine its fair market value. In February, the Assessor will mail tentative assessment letters (known as “impact notices”) to property owners. In an effort to share as much information as possible, the Assessor expects to provide each property owner with information about the property sales used to determine a property’s tentative value. The Assessor and Town consultant have scheduled more informational seminars for Tuesday, January 29th at 7pm at the former Western Turnpike Rescue Squad’s Station 1, 200 Centre Drive, and on Thursday, February 7th at 7pm at Town Hall. Please visit the Assessor’s webpage for reassessment information, timelines, next steps, and the seminar’s PowerPoint presentation.

UAlbany Planning Department’s Studio Project I am excited to announce that UAlbany Planning Department chose the Town for its 2019 Spring Semester graduate program’s studio project. The project will advance the Town’s efforts to create a multiuse trail system connecting neighborhoods, parks, schools, businesses, and other destinations. UAlbany noted that the Town had made significant progress in obtaining open space (over 700 acres since 2001), expanded trails see www.timesunion.com/news/article/ Rail-Trail-grows-in-Guilderland-12969841.php, had well-documented studies of trails and bicycle routes, and had in place a comprehensive plan and neighborhood studies indicating residents’ strong interest in more connections. The Town’s recreational opportunities were among other factors leading to the Town’s rating as the “most desirable” upstate community by young adults, see www.timesunion.com/photogallery/ article/Guilderland-rated-most-desirable-for-young-13172050.php. The studio project will include an inventory of the Town’s open space, GIS mapping of trails and open space, and conceptual recommendations of on and off road route options and trail connections. Later this year, the Planning Department will post the final scope of work and studio syllabus on its webpage.
Town Ambulance Update Last July, the Town Medical Director recommended that the Town EMS Department obtain NYS Department of Health’s certification of need to operate an ambulance service to reduce response times, particularly overnight along Carman Road and areas to the west. After the Town deployed a used bariatric ambulance, emergency response times were reduced from 12 minutes to five minutes. By year’s end, as Western Turnpike Rescue Squad wound down its private ambulance service, the Town acquired WTRS’s five ambulances, hired 21 part-time Emergency Medical Technicians, and took possession of two stations. You can watch WNYT (News Channel 13)’s five minute report on the Town’s successful efforts to respond quickly to problems plaguing the ambulance industry at https://wnyt.com/news/fixing-ems-systemissues/5166065/?cat=10114.
The Town’s ambulances are advanced life support with cardiac monitoring, pain management, IV fluids, and sedation. The Town ambulance system saves dollars by dispatching only an ambulance with a paramedic and EMT instead of responding with both an SUV with a paramedic and an ambulance with two EMTS. In 2019, State Senator Amedore and Assemblyperson Patricia Fahy are supporting grants for the Town’s purchase of three power lifts (totaling about $150,000.00) for lifting heavy stretchers into the ambulances. These power lifts help reduce back injuries and prolong careers. The EMS Department will continue to coordinate service with Altamont Rescue Squad to deploy the best possible emergency response.
New Sidewalks and Road Improvements In 2019, the Town will award a construction contract for the new sidewalk on Western Avenue from Regency Park to the Guilderland Public Library with a cross-walk to Guilderland Elementary School. This sidewalk is funded by a competitive State grant ($680,080.00) providing 80% of the project’s cost. In 2018, the Town reopened part of Mercy Care Lane as a Town road to provide safe access for Library patrons and others to reach the Western Avenue traffic light at Winding Brook Road. In 2019, the Town anticipates taking title to the rest of private Mercy Care Lane, and updating the entire road to Town Highway standards. The Town has had regular meetings with NYS Department of Transportation on its redesign of the Carman Road and Lydius Street intersection, including left turn lanes in both directions on Carman Road and a sidewalk heading east on Carman Road. With a generous grant ($375,000.00) provided by Assemblyperson Patricia Fahy, the Town has met with DOT to extend the sidewalk to the Pine Bush Elementary School. DOT is also planning to repave the entire length of Carman Road in 2019. Because this project is funded by Federal and State dollars, the project may proceed in stages in 2019, starting first with the State-funded repaving and later with the Federal-funded intersection and sidewalk work. Please check the Town website and sign up for Nixle notices for construction updates.
New Water Connection with Rotterdam In 2019, the Town will also award contracts for a new pump station and connection that will link the Town of Guilderland and Town of Rotterdam water systems, repainting the Fort Hunter water tower, and new water infrastructure. The Town received a State grant of $2,372,863.00 for 60% of the cost, with the balance paid by Water Department reserves.
McKownville Stormwater/Water Infrastructure Project In late 2018, the Town began construction of the long-awaited stormwater system to alleviate the flooding of basements in McKownville homes. The project was expanded to include replacement of aged water lines. The cost of the project is funded, in part, by State grants totaling $3,250,000.00 secured by State Senator George Amedore, State Senator Neil Breslin, and Assemblyperson Patricia Fahy, with the balance paid by Water Department reserves. Not surprisingly, the contractor came across a few unexpected items include an abandoned gas main with asbestos wrapping. With good weather, the project is on schedule through the winter shutdown and should resume in late spring. Please check the Town website for more information, including street maps of completed and remaining work, and FAQs. On behalf of the Town of Guilderland and its employees, we wish all of our residents, their families, and businesses a happy, safe, and prosperous New Year.

Income Tax PreParaTIon checklIsT by
Douglas bauer
Guilderland, NY - We are coming up on the time of year when many of us will be busy preparing and gathering the information necessary for the completion of our 2018 income tax returns. Below are several items that you should be aware of as it relates to this process. By the second week of February, you should have received your forms W-2 (employment wages) and any 1099R (retirement income), 1099INT, or 1099-MISC (other income) statements for 2018, as well as your social security benefits statement, if applicable. You should also begin receiving forms 1099-DIV and 1099-B for any directly-owned investments such as mutual funds. If you own a brokerage account, you may not receive your consolidated brokerage tax statement until the beginning of March at the latest. To reduce the possibility of having to send amended tax statements due to late or corrected reporting by various investment companies, many brokerage firms have opted to delay mailing these consolidated statements.
higher income limits before phaseout occurs. The medical expense deduction remains set at 7.5% of Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) for all
Other considerations may include real estate taxes paid, mortgage interest, medical expenses, investment advisory fees, forms K-1, estimated income tax payments, charitable donations (whether by check or in-kind), etc.
We encourage you to consult your tax preparer to determine if you are eligible to make a 2018 contribution to a Traditional IRA or a Roth IRA. The maximum contribution limit to either type of account for 2018 is $5,500 ($6,500 if you had turned 50 by 12/31/2018). 2018 contributions to individual retirement accounts should be made no later than April 15, 2019.
The 2018 tax forms reflect new legislation under the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act of 2017. While changes are numerous, the items that will most affect taxpayers are the expanded standard deductions of $12,000 individual and $24,000 married-filing-jointly (greatly reducing the number of taxpayers who will itemize their deductions), and lower tax rates for all but the lowest bracket (remains the same at 10%). The child tax credit has doubled to $2,000 per eligible child, with much
taxpayers for tax year 2018.
Whether you elect to self-prepare your income tax returns or hire a professional, we suggest you make all efforts to determine that you are taking advantage of any available opportunities for tax savings or tax deferral. In particular, retirement account contributions may serve the dual benefit of helping to reduce income taxes now while providing additional income during retirement.

The Devil is in the Details by Leyla A. Kiosse
Guilderland, NY - The internet has changed the way we live; everyone can now become an “expert” on any topic with a quick web search. While easy (and free) access to information is empowering, it can also be filled with pitfalls. Ask any lawyer what the bane of her existence is and she will likely tell you “Google” (or any other web engine). I spend more time disarming clients of wrong “legal” information that they read on the internet than I would otherwise spend if they had asked me first instead of asking “Alexa”. In the past year, I have had several clients come to me with agreements that were either self-prepared with templates found on the internet or prepared by the other spouse’s attorney, and signed by the client without the client first obtaining legal advice from an experienced matrimonial attorney. These are agreements are often unenforceable, or so poorly written they are incomprehensible. Sometimes the situation is worse – like when the agreement is well written and enforceable, but terribly unfair to one spouse. Telling a client that her unfair agreement is still binding is always a hard conversation to have. A properly executed separation or marital settlement agreement is a legally binding contract, and once signed is impossible (with very few limited exceptions) to undo. I will never understand why people are willing to negotiate and sign a legally binding contract without having a full understanding of their legal rights and options. Would those same people perform their own surgical procedure? Probably not. While it is understandable that people want to save time and money by taking a DIY approach to a divorce or separation, such an approach should never be taken without considering the consequences and costs when mistakes are made. It is vastly more expensive to try to
correct problems with a bad agreement than it would have been had the individual hired an experienced attorney to be involved at the outset. One should never negotiate an agreement without (minimally) consulting with an experienced attorney. However, if you insist on negotiating an agreement yourself, you should keep the following points in mind: 1.
Be clear about your goals – these should include property distribution, responsibility for debts, spousal and/or child support, custody, health insurance, medical expenses, child care expenses, educational expenses, etc. You must have full knowledge of what your assets/debts/obligations are; if you do not, then you can’t possibly make an informed decision about these issues.
2.
Hope – hope springs eternal, except when contracts are involved! Do not ever sign an agreement that does not spell out exactly what the other person is required to do because you hope she will “do the right thing”. If that person has been dishonest with you, nickeled and dimed you during your relationship, or has otherwise been a bad partner, things are probably not getting better when you are apart.
3.
Understand what you are signing – if you do not understand what your agreement says, do not sign it. Even if you think you understand it, have it reviewed by an experienced matrimonial attorney before you sign it. This will save you a lot of time and money (not to mention heartache) in the long run!

King is incredibly loving and likes to be held and pet. He loves human companionship and is totally mellow - similar to a Rag Doll personality. He sometimes likes to talk to you in little squeaks and soft purrs. He comes to you when you call him and will greet everyone at the door. He is extremely easy-going and enjoys interacting with all six cats in his foster home. He is the mayor of the house - personally greeting each cat at snack time. Shay is extremely shy and totally gentle. Her favorite things are playing with her brother and the other kitties, watching birds out the windows, and just hanging out. She keeps very busy. In time Shay will allow you to pick her up. She has no aggression but she will be gently scared until she gets used to you. Shay continues to make daily progress in her adjustment. Shay and King are rescues that were both abandoned outside in the cold winter. King was being fed by an elderly gentleman and was sleeping in a cardboard box to stay warm. Shay was found starving. The only home for King and Shay will be within the Albany, New York capital district. They could both enjoy and benefit from a cat or two in their forever home. Both King and Shay are altered, up-to-date on their vaccines and have tested negative for FIV/Felv. If you would like to learn more contact 518-461-0251 or brightsky@nycap.rr.com

Guilderland, NY - Like many people, you may resolve to lead a healthier lifestyle each New Year. Have you considered enhancing your dental health as a goal? Good dental health habits not only promote healthy teeth and a beautiful smile, but contribute to your overall health as well. Here are some dental health tips to consider for the New Year:
Eat Healthy A healthy diet is important for maintaining good dental health. Nutrients in fruits, vegetables, dairy products and whole grains strengthen teeth and fight bacteria that cause gum disease. Make a point this year to incorporate more tooth-healthy foods in your daily diet.
Control your sweet tooth Sugary snacks and beverages are your teeth’s worst enemy. When sugars are broken down in your mouth, they produce acids that wear away your enamel and cause tooth decay. Make it a goal this year to limit your intake of sweets, for your health and your teeth! Quit using tobacco products Tobacco use can cause all kinds of oral health problems, including: • Bad breath • Stained teeth • Gum disease • Tooth loss • Oral cancer If you currently use tobacco, consider quitting this year. Instead, try out a healthier habit, like chewing sugar free gum, which stimulates the flow of saliva that washes away bacteria.
Brush and floss regularly

Brushing and flossing your teeth are the first line of defense against oral health complications. If you don’t brush and floss as recommended, plaque can develop on and between teeth causing decay and gum disease, which can in turn lead to other health problems like heart disease. It’s time to step up your game in 2019 and brush twice and floss once each day.
Regular checkups Your dentist knows best when it comes to keeping your mouth healthy. Scheduling regular checkups allows your dentist to monitor your dental health and address any concerns before they become bigger problems. Visiting your dentist every six months is the best way to ensure a clean bill of dental health, so this year, schedule regular appointments and keep your mouth in good shape. You owe a lot to those teeth and gums of yours. Do them a favor this New Year by practicing excellent dental health habits and smile big in 2019, because the more you smile, the longer you live. So why not take care of your teeth? At Oshins of Smiles we wish you a happy and healthy New Year.

Mark Grimm Communications (markgrimm.com) Interview with Mark Grimm Q: What does your company do?
Q: What experience do you mean?
A: Three primary services: (1) Provide high-energy, entertaining and practical keynote speeches and business seminars/workshops to associations, companies and not-for-profits. (2) One-on-one coaching to help improve public speaking skills or to become more seasoned when dealing with media. (3) Consulting on public communication --- such as stronger messaging, better presentation skills, improved media relations and social media, or more effective political campaigns.
A: I was a TV news anchor/reporter for 12 years which included one-on-one interviews with Presidents Bush and Clinton. Every day in that industry was a learning experience and I encountered nearly every walk of life. I also interviewed more than 700 people in my 14 years as a radio interview host. I picked up something from nearly everyone I interviewed. My 11 years as an adjunct college professor gave me a wonderful window into the minds of young people. As a small business owner for 17 years, I’ve learned to focus on what matters most to clients and how best to meet those needs.
Q: What topics do you cover in your presentations?
Q: You are also an Albany County legislator representing part of Guilderland. Where do you find the time?
A: More than 20 topics in all. They include motivational speaking, presentation skills, leadership, media relations, political advocacy and change management.
Q: What do you think is your edge? A: Passion and Experience. Helping people never gets old, so I am relentlessly passionate about guiding people toward their full potential. I also think my unusual blend of experiences provides a perspective that is hard to find and hard to beat.

A: Time management. I spend time on the things that clients and constituents care most about. I love communication and public service, so it does not seem like work to me. And you can truly make a difference in people’s lives in both endeavors.
Q: Who are your prime business prospects? A: People who hire professional speakers. This might be program managers for conferences, human resource professionals looking for a strong business seminar or workshop at their company, or an organization looking for a motivational speaker to charge up their event.
Q: What would be your typical client for one-on-one coaching? A: It’s funny, you might think my typical client is a poor speaker hoping to get better. But most poor speakers never take the initiative to get better, that’s why they remain poor at it. My typical client is pretty good at speaking but wants to get better because they understand the awesome value of strong presentation skills.
Q: What makes your business so satisfying? A: Feedback from thrilled clients. One coaching client once said, “I feel like you’ve given me a super power by helping me become a stronger speaker.” And after a speaking engagement, a workforce development professional said, “Mark, you truly inspired us. I cannot say enough about your ability to motivate people into action.” Those are kind words that make your day.
Q: Where did this passion for your work come from? A: When I ran for a student office at Siena, I hid in the men’s room when it was my time to speak. The nervousness was too much for me. As I sat there, I said to myself, “Do I want to spend the rest of my life this way?” I decided then to begin the path to better public speaking and that’s why I cannot wait to share this roadmap with anyone interested.
Q: Is that what your public speaking book is about?
Q: Haven’t I seen you on some local commercials? A: Yes. I have done quite a bit of on-camera and voiceover work over the years. I still do, but my roles are for older characters then when I first started. After all, Father Time is undefeated.
Q: Do you offer anything for free? A: Yes. My website (markgrimm.com) has a page entitled, “Grimm Academy.” You can find short video tapes there on several topics that serve as helpful instructional guides. Share the links with anyone you wish.
Q: How does someone contact you? A: You can find all contact information, how to purchase my book and much more background at markgrimm.com.
Q: Is there something people would be surprised to hear about you? A: I am one of nine children. That meant hand-me-down clothes and macaroni and cheese a lot for dinner. But, I certainly learned the value of a dollar and the importance of family.
Q: How do you relax? A; My favorite activities are watching shows or movies at home with my family and being a soccer and lacrosse dad. Go Lady Dutch!
A: Exactly. I wrote Everyone Can Be A Dynamic Speaker: Yes, I Mean You! to provide an easy-to-read blueprint for better speaking that anyone can follow.

JUST START MOVING! By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling Guilderland, NY - Here we are again. A new year…a fresh start. Do you feel obligated to have a revolutionary resolution? I really get annoyed with New Year’s Resolutions articles and media discussions about it. But here I am writing about it. We all have the same goal – to be healthier. So let’s stop thinking about the perfect plan, the perfect goal and just start moving! By the time we ponder what our goals should be and spend 5-10 hours researching how to exercise and what program we need, downloading and figuring out fitness apps and how many macros we need (new fancy way to say we are counting calories), we could have lost 5 pounds. Let’s just start moving! How many of you have said this to yourself? “I need to get in shape to go back to the gym.” I know I have. How crazy is that? Let’s just start moving! We are never going to be back in our twenty-something bodies. But we can improve our health at any age. How did exercise become so complicated? It seems that there is so much information out there that it feels overwhelming and confusing knowing where to start. Keep is simple – start by walking and moving your body more through the day. Let’s pay some homage and reminisce about the great fitness enthusiast that got us all moving and grovin’ back in the day – Jane Fonda, Richard Simmons and Arnold Schwartzenager. Exercise used to be fun and not a burdensome chore. How many of you fitness junkies have tried these trends over the years? I have done most of these just to try something new. Jazzercise Aerobics Step Aerobics Bodybuilding P90X
Insanity Billy Blank’s Tae Bo Tabata Cross training Spinning
Pilates Yoga Zumba Crossfit Orange Theory
Let’s start a new trend called…. PDYPAM, (pronounced: piddy-pam) Put Down Your Phone And Move! Occasionally The Husband will ask me to exercise with him. This drives me nuts. We have a treadmill and a cycling bike in our basement. My fitness prep includes one thing – get on the treadmill and start running. I’ll run in my bedroom slippers just to get moving …and to be funny. The Husband’s fitness prep takes 30 minutes! He has to put on his special cycling cloths, make sure all the parts of the bike are synced to a computer, training program uploaded with a new route, heart rate monitor synced to his fancy Fitbit, a show ready on Netflix, the fan turned on and angled just right, 3 water bottles filled with water or Gatorade. Good grief! I have my workout done before he even gets on the bike. Stop monkeying around and start riding already. Whatever you love to do, just start doing it. Let’s all just start moving! We don’t need to be fit to exercise. We don’t need a new outfit to look good at the gym. We don’t need a fancy watch to monitor our every move – while awake and asleep. Let’s just start moving! If you don’t know where to start or are not sure if a certain program is right for you. We can help! We are more than happy to sit down with you and talk about your fitness goals, discuss your physical limitations and perform a movement assessment to help get going in the right direction. Simply call the office and ask us for a FREE 30 MINUTE FUNCTIONAL MOVEMENT ASSESSMENT. We would love to be a part of your healthcare team! Rep. Paul Tonko, D-N.Y., presents a proclamation to Community Caregivers Advisory Board member Ellen Howie during Community Caregivers’ 24th annual gala. She and her husband, Dick, have volunteered with the organization since 1995. Held Nov. 17 at Albany Country Club, the gala raised $68,000.
Community Caregivers 24TH Annual Gala Raises $68,000 Guilderland, N.Y., Dec. 19, 2018 -- Community Caregivers, a nonprofit organization dedicated to enabling individuals of all ages to maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life within their homes and communities, has announced its 24th annual gala raised $68,000. Held Nov. 17 at Albany Country Club in Voorheesville, N.Y., more than 165 people attended the gala. The evening featured silent and live auctions and a wine-and-dine pull. Greg Floyd, news anchor, CBS 6 Albany, served as this year’s master of ceremonies. The Board of Directors wishes to thank gala sponsors Adirondack Environmental Services, Albany Med, Ayco Charitable Foundation, Bank of America, MVP Health Care, Dr. Judith Mysliborski, New York Business Development Corporation and United Group of Companies.
During the event, the Board presented the Joseph A. Bosco Community Service award to the Capital Financial Planning Charitable Foundation. The Foundation was started in 2009 by Todd Slingerland, president and CEO of Capital Financial Planning, a registered advisory investment firm located in Guilderland, N.Y. The Foundation has helped to bolster the many efforts of not-for-profit organizations, including those dedicated to fighting disease and hunger, enhancing education and youth development, supporting veterans and the elderly and working to address problems such as domestic violence and homelessness. Each year, the Foundation raises funds through its golf outing and selects a primary beneficiary to provide impactful donations and grants. In 2018, the Foundation selected Community Caregivers.
At the gala, Rep. Paul Tonko, D-N.Y., presented a proclamation to Community Caregivers Advisory Board member Ellen Howie. She and her husband, Dick, have volunteered with the organization since 1995. The couple also recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. About Community Caregivers: Community Caregivers, Inc., was founded in 1994 in Altamont, NY, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. With the help of a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the founders used the Parish Nurse Program as a model in developing the organization. Its mission is to enable individuals of all ages to maintain their independence, dignity and quality of life within their homes and communities. Community Caregivers provides nonmedical support services to those in need. Services are offered to residents of the Albany County Towns of Guilderland, Bethlehem, New Scotland, Berne and Knox and the City of Albany in upstate New York. Community Caregivers supports family caregivers with education, resources, and, for some, respite from caregiving. 22

The Latella’s Home Cooking and Catering Interview with Samantha Robbins
Q. How long have you been in business?
Q How and why did you get into the business?
A. Although we proudly opened our doors October 6th, 2018, cooking has been a lifelong passion and part of my culture since I was young. Most of our recipes have been handed down from generation to generation.
A. I have always had a love for food. As I started exploring culinary classes in college, while working full-time and being a full-time mother, I realized what really brought joy to our household. It was bringing a fun and delicious dinner around our table after a long day is all said and done. My husband and I opened The Latella’s because it is our passion to serve others great quality food and to bring back that joy of a home cooked meal shared with family!
Q. Where are you located? A. We are located at 2563 Western Avenue, Altamont NY 12009. We are a shared storefront with a wonderful little store called For the Love of Bacon right on the Guilderland border. Q. What is your phone number and website address? A. 518-225-0482 and www.thelatellasfood.com Q. What hours are you open? A. Starting January 13th, 2019 we will be open TuesdaySaturdays, Noon- 8:00 pm.
Q. What do you love most about the business? A. I truly enjoy cooking and serving. When people smile after taking a bite of the food I cook, it’s the best feeling in the world. My roots are from Italy, my great-grandparents came over from Calabria. They brought a certain joy and passion to the home-cooked food around the dinner table. I truly love utilizing classic dishes, as well as my own modern twist on some, to bring the richness and traditionality to food everybody will love. Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. At The Latella’s, although we are a small takeout business, it doesn’t bring lack of quality to our dishes. We develop our cooking techniques at home and bring the same techniques to our business front. When you order food from The Latella’s, you are not only supporting a small family owned business, but you are a participant in enhancing this culture of family and joy we are trying to encourage in our local community.

Did you know the Guilderland School District has a solar farm? Guilderland, NY - In July 2015, the district entered into a 20-year solar energy power purchase agreement with SunEdison. The partnership resulted in the construction of a 2 megawatt (MW) solar energy farm located in Altamont. By entering into this agreement, the district will receive credits that are applied to its electric bills (for generating energy that is delivered to National Grid), under a program known as remote net metering. This program was designed to provide incentives to energy services companies and large electrical customers to invest in solar farms as a renewable energy source and to reduce carbon emissions. In November 2018, the racking systems (which hold the solar panels) were installed by two-person teams. The teams worked together to bolt the metal “racking” supports to each of the posts. The process involves each bolt being torqued to a specific tightness and individually marked, indicating that the required torque was applied. The solar site has a total of 8,000 panels and under good weather conditions about 2,000 panels can be installed per day. Installation of the panels is expected to be completed by the end of the month. Following installation, the next step requires National Grid to make the interconnection to the solar farm before it can become operational. Stay tuned to www.guilderlandschools.org for more! Some quick facts: •
The solar panel farm is located on a 22-acre site on Becker Road in Altamont
•
The district’s 4-year kilowatt hour (kWh) consumption average is 5,688,594 kWh
•
This solar farm system will produce about 3.3 million kWh per year
•
The district is projected to save an estimated $4-$4.5 million over a 20-year period through SunEdison’s power purchase agreement.
•
This project will offset the district’s electrical carbon footprint by approximately 58%
