5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org Guilderland, NY - If our early winter continues in earnest, your Town facilities will ready for recreational activities ranging from snowshoeing and groomed cross-country ski trails at the Western Turnpike Golf Course, sledding at the Winter Recreation Area, and winter hiking and snowshoeing at Tawasentha Park and Vosburgh Trails. Please also take a look at Hike Guilderland!, a new interactive application with detailed maps of hiking

trails located in the Town, and new kiosks installed at trailheads. Starting January 2, 2019, the Parks & Recreation Department is accepting reservation requests for Tawasentha Park’s three pavilions, including the restored Chalet building. You can obtain rental information and a Request for Use of Facilities Form on the Parks Department’s webpage or by calling its offices at (518) 456-3150. The early arrival of sizeable snow storms has scuttled the remaining street schedule for vacuuming loose leaves. Despite the inclement weather, the Highway Department is currently vacuuming streets one last time, and will continue to collect bagged leaves and brush. Once your street is vacuumed or loose leaves are picked up by other means, the Highway Department will only pick up bagged leaves. Please call the Highway Department at (518) 861-5108, if you have questions about leaf pickup.

The Town’s Department of Emergency Medical Services has continued its acquisition of Western Turnpike Rescue Squad’s assets as it winds down its ambulance services. These assets include five ambulances, two diesel and three gas engines. Each ambulance is thoroughly inspected by Highway Department mechanics who have rebuilt an engine, replaced an oil pump, performed body work, restriped the ambulances, and done other necessary work to keep these ambulances in service. The Highway Department team is led by Shop Foreman Lee Knaggs, mechanics Matt Walsh and Wyatt Moller, and Brian Wilson in the sign shop. Sean McGaughnea, Paramedic Shift Supervisor, has played a key role in transitioning the ambulances into Town service as advanced life support ambulances. At its November 8th meeting, the Town Board unanimously adopted two resolutions which benefit seniors who received the Senior Citizens’ Exemption for property taxes. The first resolution allows eligible taxpayers to pay their January property tax bill in two equal installments by paying the first half no later than January 31st and the second half, with interest in February (1% interest) or March (2% interest). The second resolution provides that taxpayers receiving the Senior Citizens’ Exemption who wish to make the full payment of property taxes in January will have five extra days, without penalty or interest, to make that payment. If you have any questions regarding these resolutions, please do not hesitate to call the Receiver of Taxes at (518) 356-1980 ext. 1059. The Assessor’s Office is holding a second round of information seminars on the 2019 revaluation process. The seminars will explain next steps in the revaluation process. The seminars will be held on December 13th at 7:00pm (Fort Hunter Fire Department); December 19th at 9:00am (Grace Baptist Church, 5958 State Farm Rd); and January 3rd at 7:00pm (Altamont Village Hall-Community Room). Please check the Assessor’s webpage for additional information about the 2019 revaluation, including additional dates and times for the seminar, and the seminar’s PowerPoint presentation. At the Town Board’s Tuesday, December 18th meeting at 7:00pm, Town Planner Kenneth Kovalchik will provide a PowerPoint presentation on proposed and pending residential development projects, and the role of neighborhood studies accepted by the Town Board between 2003 and 2017 as part of the Town’s Comprehensive Plan process. The presentation will include the Town Planner’s responses to questions raised by residents at public hearings, and in letters, emails, and phone calls. The PowerPoint will be posted on the Town website. On Wednesday, December 19th, from 2:00 to 6:00 pm, the Parks & Recreation Department is hosting its annual Evergreen Holiday Centerpiece Workshop at the Western Turnpike Golf Course Clubhouse. Greens, pine cones, berries and candles, along with light refreshments, will be provided. Please bring along decorations or ornaments to add to your creation and arrive before 5:15 pm. You can register for the event and pay the $20 fee at www.guilderlandrec.com or by calling the Parks’ Department at (518) 456-3150. The Town is seeking proposals from vendors to provide food and beverage services at the Western Turnpike Golf Course. The selected vendor will operate a restaurant and bar in the clubhouse, provide on-course mobile beverage services, and handle food and beverage service for members, guests, tournaments, leagues, outings, banquets, weddings and special events. The request for proposal and requirements for responses (due by 4:00 pm on December 28th) are available on the Parks & Recreation webpage. I also would like to announce the well-deserved retirements of two long-time Town employees.
Randy Crounse started as a laborer in the
Highway Department and, for more than 20 years, was the chief mechanic responsible for maintaining police and EMS vehicles. Stacia BrigadierSmith served as Director of Human Resources and later as Personnel Administrator which are two of the most important and demanding roles in Town government. I thank Randy (35 years) and Stacia (18 years) for their dedicated professional service. Town offices will be closed on Monday, December 24th and Tuesday, December 25th, and Tuesday, January 1st. Please remember that if bad weather is anticipated or taking place, please call ahead or check the Town website to make sure that Town offices are open. Thank you for taking the time to read these notes. I want to thank Lowell Knapp for providing space in Our Towne Guilderland for sharing news about happenings in Town. On behalf of the Town and its employees, we hope that you and your family have a safe and enjoyable holiday season. Peter G. Barber Town Supervisor

Is Love Better the Second (or third) Time Around? by Margaret C. Tabak, Esq.
Guilderland, NY - Everyone walks into my office and tells me they will never get married again. Statistically, that’s probably not true. Even if you don’t remarry, many people will enter into relationships again, whether long term or short term ones. I often send my clients into the dating world with a discussion about the birds and the bees. While this may seem humorous, I will outline pitfalls that even the most intelligent and sophisticated people could find themselves in. Things to think about as you go into the dating world: 1. Don’t rush! People going through a break up are often lonely and scared, which makes them vulnerable. Spend time with children, your friends and family. Join a gym. Take a class. Get to know yourself. Heal. 2. On-line dating- This may be a shock, but not everyone presents themselves completely honestly. • Prior to meeting someone, do not give them any personal information about yourself such as income or assets. • Do not have discussions of an intimate nature with a stranger. S/he could turn out to be a pranking teenager whose parents then share your conversations with the authorities. • Do not share or post pictures of yourself in anything other than what you would wear to work. 3. Children- It is not uncommon that purported adults get themselves involved in intimate relationships with no discussion
about the ramifications. If you do not want [more] children, what are you doing about that? I have had many 60+ year old men in my office crying crocodile tears about now having a second family that they never intended or wanted. When I ask how that happened I am often told that they “thought” their partner was taking responsibility or was too old. This is not something that should be “thought” about, but needs to be discussed. If you don’t want to be 80-something and paying child support, then make mature and informed decisions. 4. Financial Status- If you are going to live with someone or get married, then you need to know about each other’s assets and liabilities. While you may say that is his/her problem, it becomes your problem if you are relying on them contributing to your household and they cannot. Do not co-sign a lease and then find out your partner cannot pay her share. 5. Family Drama- Is your partner’s ex showing up at your door in the middle of the night drunk? Has her son taken permanent residence on your couch? While much of this may not be the fault of your partner, what part of it do you want to take on? If a parent or adult child is financially dependent on your partner, how is that going to affect you?
Lastly, are you picking the same person you paid me to get rid of ? While I offer my clients a complimentary screening of their new partner, no one has taken me up on it. Don’t replicate a bad pattern. Best wishes to the Guilderland community for a Happy New Year!

Pure Cleaning Services LLC Interview with Brittany Rimmer and Maureen Adams
Q. Where are you located? A. We are located in Guilderland but we serve customers throughout the capital district; from Clifton Park to Albany, Schenectady to East Greenbush.
Q. Do you have many regular customers? Is there anything specific that they are always coming in for? A. We have roughly 65 regular customers and we clean on a weekly, biweekly, or monthly schedule. Residential clients make up the bulk of our work load but we also take care of a few local businesses and we do new construction cleaning (before apartments or homes are moved into).
Q. What is your phone number and website address? A. 518-355-9319 and www.facebook.com/puregreenclean2015 You can also find us on care.com
Q. Are you known for anything special? A. We’re a mother-daughter owned and operated company AND we’re ecofriendly! Being green and less toxic sets us apart.
Q. What hours are you open? A. Monday through Friday 8-5
Q. What do you love most about the business? A. Our relationships with our customers! This business gives us great joy because we are making a difference in the lives of others; whether they can no longer clean due to their health, their busy work schedules, or just because they’d rather spend their spare time with family and friends, we are happy to help! Also, being able to grow this business together, as Mother and Daughter and partners, its been so rewarding! A family run business surely has its challenges but at the end of the day we have each other to lean on and bounce ideas off of and it has definitely helped our business grow.
Q. What year did your business start? A. In 2015
Q. How and why did you get into the business? A. In the summer of 2015, Pure Cleaning Services started as a pool side daydream and then became reality. We asked ourselves: how could we find or chase a rewarding career that we love and make a living, yet be able to spend more time with family and make a difference in the lives of others. With Maureen’s strong passion for living an organic and environmentally friendly lifestyle (gardening, her own honeybee colony, recycling, organic eating, limiting waste) and Brittany’s upbringing (she’s Maureen’s eldest daughter) and her college background (a bachelors degree in Atmospheric Science)- an environmentally friendly business concept started to take shape. A major societal trend revolves around the phrase “environmentally friendly”; the world is growing ever more conscious of the way our food is grown/produced, water and energy consumption, limiting waste, the ingredients in skin care products and detergents…but not everyone realizes that the way we clean is just as important. The chemicals we wipe down our surfaces and floors with that we later come in direct contact with (or our pets and children do), the products that we wash down our drains each day, or the amount of paper towels we carelessly throw away. Combine all of this with the fact that we actually enjoy cleaning and there you have the development of PCS. An eco-friendly, less toxic, minimal waste cleaning company! 10
Mid-December 2018 |
Q. What do you think is your biggest challenge with the business? A. The first two years, the biggest challenge was getting our name out there and finding work. Thankfully, that is no longer a problem for us and we have our amazing customers to thank for that! Spreading the word about us and using Facebook to share our page and google to review us...we’re forever grateful! Now, our challenge is finding new employees to add to our team! Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. We just want to thank every single person who has supported us along the way, it has kept us going even on our worst days! And if you or anyone you know is looking for a reliable, passionate, eco-friendly cleaning company, give us a call! We’d love it if you chose Pure Cleaning Services for your home or office cleaning needs!

Oshins of Smiles...A Year in Review.
Being a wellness office I strongly believe in recognizing potential problems early before they turn into bigger problems. Many of the courses I’ve taken this year focused on sleep apnea and airway issues. Our office can offer sleep appliances to alleviate snoring and potential airway issues. Recognizing airway issues in children early on is critical. Often this can help with proper growth and development of their jaws and palate, minimizing the need for orthodontics. In October, our entire team went to the Wellness Dentistry Network Rally in Michigan where lecturers from all over the world presented information on airway issues, periodontal disease, nutrition and inflammation. These lectures were highly informative and we were excited to share this information with our patients.
As this year comes to a close I wanted to reflect back and share with you some of the exciting community events my staff and I participated in, educational courses we took and the exciting technology we’re introducing for 2019. I would like to start by saying “Thank you” to all my patients for their continued trust and the confidence they place in our practice.
Community events: In February during dental health month we gave lectures to several classes at local schools reaching out to hundreds of students . It was nice to provide each child with information on oral health care, educational materials and take home goody bags.
I’ve taken more courses on Invisalign / clear aligners..this allows me to help correct crowded, crooked teeth and improve patients bites.
We gave presentations at local adult living centers..topics included dental wellness and the systemic effects it can have on our bodies.
Technology:
We participated in the National Night Out event at Tawasentha Park and Ladies Night Out event at Western Turnpike Golf Course...providing tables full of great information, handouts, and fun games for the kids.
Continuing education: I feel strongly about taking courses and am always striving to learn more and to be better at what I do. I attended the Kois Symposium in Seattle, a three day symposium for graduates of their most advanced program, where world renowned lecturers presented on dental topics such as sleep apnea and implants, Dentistry is constantly evolving with new materials and technology and to be able to treat my patients with cutting edge dentistry, I will continue to pursue my advanced education.
I am excited to introduce an intraoral scanner in my office. This will allow me to scan individual and full arches of teeth without using those messy impression materials that make some patients gag. After a scan is taken I can send it electronically to my dental lab for fabrication of crowns, bridges, implant crowns, nightguards ( for patients who grind their teeth), and so much more. I want to thank everyone for taking the time to read my monthly articles. If you have any questions please feel free to call me or stop by my office . I would love to meet you. I’d like to wish everyone a wonderful and safe Holiday Season and a Happy New Year! With Oshins of Smiles, Dr. Steven Oshins

Target Guilderland, NY - At the start of December, as we approach the New Year, eight of our hardworking students will test for Blackbelt. Expect to hear about them next month, as is my post testing tradition. The approaching test and New Year remind me that it is important to have targets. always These students had a target. They made a plan and made it happen. Blackbelt testing reminds me that no matter what level you achieve in any area of your life, you can get there better by having a clear target. In class, we talk frequently about having targets to break boards and how that applies to everyday life. The coming New Year provides us with a reason to make commitments, set targets, and make plans. Like our students that continue to strive for what comes next, think ahead and set a target so you know what comes next. This requires insightful thought and planning. Make sure that you set intermediate levels to guide you toward your target. The belt structure of Taekwondo provides an excellent structure for proceeding through a rewarding life of martial arts training. Each belt level has targets required to achieve it and each blackbelt level is a cumulative expression of acquired techniques. At our school, we provide an extensive blackbelt curriculum complete with intermediate targets. Apply this concept of goals and targets to your situation and arrange them in your mind as if climbing mountain. Work on your targets with success in mind, accepting nothing less than excellence. Be ready to restructure your timing based on variables in your life and when you can think long range without losing your focus on the present. Basically, when things are happening, be present, when things are quiet dream and plan all the while never losing focus. For the practiced martial artist, this is a honed skill: be present when things are happening; be calm and thoughtful when it is quiet, but never lose your focus on your surroundings and what could suddenly happen. You see, all of the aspects of martial arts training have applications in our lives from yin and yang balance, to the structure of our targets, to self-defense awareness. This all works in harmony for a great life.

THE JOY OF PARENTING By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling Guilderland, NY - Last December I wrote an article titled The Art of
Later, the kids were studying their French together and quizzing each
Finding Joy. It seemed to resonate with many of you and in the spirit other. It was the perfect evening but felt surreal- like I was watching my of the season, I’d like to share one of my greatest joys – The Joy of life on an old fashioned movie reel and I was Carol Brady. Parenting. For me, this is the greatest gift I have been given in my life.
I know it has not all been easy, actually it is has been the complete
opposite. But I have loved every second of being a mom and right now, I am living in the “sweet spot” of parenting. I’ll explain.
Do you ever wonder if your kids think you are a good parent? I’ll
never forget this time when my son was 4 years old. He was playing at a friend’s house and when he came home he said “Ben has the best
mom ever…she buys him fruit snacks!” Confession: This was during
All baseball players know about the “sweet spot” of their favorite bat. my “only organic” days of being a new mom - no way was I buying Without getting too much into the physics of a bat, if you make contact that junk for my kids. I’ve caved since then. And thank goodness

Trying to hit a Nonetheless, this is an ongoing joke between us. Do I rank higher than “mom” homerun. Can you see me running around the house with my
arms up in the air and my kids cheering “YOU’RE THE GREATEST
MOM EVER!” The “sweet spot” of parenting starts when your kids
reach about age 7… when they look cute with missing teeth. Long gone are the days of diapers, random crying, temper tantrums, car seats and
bedtime struggles. No more daily morning fights “Get your shoes on
before you miss the bus!” Life starts to get a little easier and you get a glimpse of parent freedom. Kids are more independent but yet they still
want to snuggle while watching a movie and will still hold your hand in public.
Ben’s mom yet on the “Best Mom Ever” scale?
I pray that I am a good mom and that I am making an impact on my
children which will lead them to make good life choices. My parenting style is based on a strong moral compass, leading by example and having conversations versus barking orders. “Listen children, we are
having a snowstorm today. This is going to suck but I need your help shoveling and plowing the driveway. I don’t want to do it either but can you help me so we can come back in and make some hot cocoa?” versus “GET OFF YOUR PHONE AND SHOVEL THE DRIVEWAY!” No

The “sweet spot” ends around age 11-12 when it is not “cool” to hold feeling angry. Life always presents hiccups along the way but it can be hands with their mom anymore. The kids have a stronger sense of their easier knowing how to react to situations. identity and fashion becomes important. Snuggles become less frequent
but you can leave your children home alone. They now start to come to tuck you into bed because you can’t stay awake past 10 P.M. (Guilty!) But this is where the worries transition into the heavy stuff filled with
teenage drama. I’m not ready for that…I want to stay in the sweet spot longer. I’m heading to the end of it with my children…so I’m trying to cherish every second I can.
I absolutely love being a mom. I know the phases of parenting are
forever changing. This has just been my favorite so far…my “sweet
spot.” This holiday season, continue to search for the things in your life that bring you joy and fulfill your soul. If you are struggling with your
children and parenting, here is a good book that may help you navigate the tough spots. It is called Raising Resilient Children by Robert Brooks
and Sam Goldstein. This has become my reference manual for how to
In early November, I experienced a parenting homerun. It was a Thursday parent the tough stuff. I highly suggest reading Chapter 4 – I’ll give night and we were all home by 4:00. I was actually making a real dinner, you the cliffhanger last paragraph: “A difficult lesson for many of us not leftovers, not pizza or tacos, but a real meal on a weeknight. My is that we have control over only one person: ourselves. We should not son came home from school and started to play Christmas music. Guilderland Elementary School participates in Computer Science Week’s ‘Day of Code’ December 5, 2018
Guilderland, NY - For the fourth year in a row, GES students are recognizing Computer Science Education Week (December 3-7) by taking part in Hour of Code (Code.org) activities. All week, students in grades 3-5 will be mentoring first and second graders, and together they’ll try simple coding activities. What a fun way to practice these foundational 21stcentury skills! ----More info: The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify “code”, to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts: https://hourofcode.com/us (A special thanks to GES School Librarian Meg Seinberg-Hughes for the photos!)
