ell, I think it should be pretty clear to everyone that March, 2014 did indeed arrive like a lion. Hopefully, the other part of the old saying will prove true as well, and by the end of the month we can be thinking about the arrival of spring. That does seem like a very long way from where we are at the moment, though! I’d like to take a moment here to acknowledge the efforts of our Town workforce to keep our municipal infrastructure functioning smoothly this very long and difficult winter. We have done better in that regard than a lot of other places, and I believe that our employees are the ones that are primarily responsible for that. I’d also like to say a good word about many of our residents as well, the ones who make sure that they don’t pile snow where it obstructs the vision of others, who keep the fire hydrants on our streets shoveled so they are ready if needed, and who check in on and help out the neighbors who may need a hand this time of year. A solid sense of community is one of our Town’s best features. A lot of people are engaging in winter sports activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding in our Town parks in spite of the colder-than-normal weather, and I’m glad to see them making use of our facilities. It’s also time for people to be thinking about the warmer-weather recreational activities that will be taking place in Guilderland soon. Applications for the use of the pavilions at Tawasentha Park are currently being accepted at the Town Parks Office. An availability schedule is posted on the Town website, www.townofguilderland. org. Call the Parks Office at 456-3150 if you have questions. Also, registration for our popular day camp and summer recreation programs will begin for Town residents on April 1. A full listing of this year’s program offerings will be available toward the end of March. A full program schedule and on-

line registration will be available at www.guilderlandrec.com. Remember that these programs frequently book up early, so make your summer plans accordingly. Call the Parks Office with any questions. The ground may be frozen, but the tee area’s warm at Guilderland’s Western Turnpike Golf Course. Our heated driving range is now open for the dedicated golfers in our community. Call the Parks Office to check on the hours. Also, you can mark your calendars for Saturday, June 14, the date of this year’s annual MudMania event at Tawasentha Park, featuring a variety of family-friendly activities and a guaranteed “ocean” of mud. Stop by Tawasentha Park this spring and see the new playground equipment that the proceeds of the MudMania event helped to provide. A lot of fun and a worthy cause make for an enjoyable day. I know that it seems like winter has gone on forever, but we have had quite a bit of sunshine (even with the cold temperatures) lately, the days are getting noticeably longer, and spring officially arrives in just a few weeks. I’m hoping that it will arrive with a flourish of warmth and sunshine. If it does, the Winter of 2014 will soon be a distant memory. Ken Runion, Supervisor

usiness the last few years have really struggled. Whether it has been financially, time wise, making cutbacks, it seems that lately we have all been working three times as hard just to stay afloat. However, it seems that things are improving! And that is Good News! People seem more optimistic and according to the latest survey by Marvin and Company 51% of business in the capital region are expecting to grow over the next year. Which is huge considering that number has been well below 50% since the recession started.

So, how as a business owner can you pass this optimism to your employees? We all know that happy workers make for a more productive company, and seeing the recession did take a hit on not just our pockets but our health, how about taking advantage of some of our local businesses to help your employees through a work day, or just make things a bit more comfortable for them? The Chamber has a number of members willing and ready to help you and your employees supplement their health insurance plans, offer life insurance, Long term care insurance, gym memberships to help stay in shape and prevent illness and others! Maybe you can team up with one of local fitness centers to provide a discount for you and your employees, or bring in one our local massage therapists or physical therapists for a wellness day of massage or education about ergonomics which is a great idea for those employees that sit at a desk all day. A chiropractor, Pilates Specialist, or wellness coach can also help with aches and pains. Or how about a day of healthy snacks and bringing in a caterer to provide a healthy lunch and a presentation on how to eat and stay healthy on a tight budget? I know that many businesses have not been able to give deserving employees a raise due to rising costs, or had to cut back hours or benefits, so tapping into alternative local resources is a nice way to let your employees know you do appreciate them. Remember, your employees are your biggest asset and in todays day and age staying healthy and fit is harder than ever. Need more suggestions or connections? Call the chamber at 456-6611 to speak with Erika or Linda or email us! egauthier@guilderlandchamber.com or lfahd@guilderlandchamber.com We have an abundance of health and wellness gurus, insurance and financial representatives who are ready to help you out! he month of March welcomes in Spring, the season of rebirth. As we all look forward to melting snow and new green beginnings, our office and staff look forward to rebuilding in our community after the devastating December fire. We are currently serving patients in a temporary office location and thank all for your continued support. More news on our exciting building plans in future articles. Prevention is the best medicine and we strive as a dental practice to help you decrease your risk of cavities. However, when cavities do occur we use composite resin to fill them. Composite resin, or tooth colored fillings, provide both excellent durability as well as resistance to fracturing. Used in either front or back teeth composite fillings provide an esthetically pleasing natural look to your smile. It takes slightly longer to fill a cavity using composite resin as the tooth needs to be kept clean and dry while filling. However, the results are well worth the few extra minutes, and your smile will thank you. Remember the following to help ensure good overall dental health : * eat a balanced diet

CAMP INVENTION IS RETURNING TO GCSD THIS SUMMER Feb. 27, 2014—In partnership with the national nonprofit Invent Now, Guilderland Central School District is pleased to once again offer the nationallyacclaimed Camp Invention program to children entering grades one through six this summer. The program runs from July 21-25, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at Farnsworth Middle School. Camp Invention inspires creativity and inventive thinking during its weeklong summer program! Led by local educators, elementary school children are immersed into fun-filled, exciting, activities that reinvent summer fun. Throughout the week, children work together to solve realworld challenges that prepare them for the 21st century. Whether they are creating an epic, insect-themed pinball machine or dismantling broken devices, participants learn new approaches to everyday problems! The cost of camp is $230, with a $25 discount if registered by 03/28/14. Availability is limited, so visit WWW. CAMPINVENTION.ORG or call 800.968.4332 to reserve your child’s spot today! For more information, you may also contact Farnsworth Middle School Camp Invention Director ALICIA MCTIERNAN.
Invent Now is America’s premier nonprofit organization dedicated to recognizing inventors and invention everywhere, promoting creativity, and advancing the spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship. Invent Now was founded in 1973 as the National Inventors Hall of Fame to recognize the great inventors of our time. S
o our family fun ice fishing season is still in full swing (see last month’s article) and we are persevering through cold while learning a lot. After some fun but long mornings on the ice during recent past weekends, we have enjoyed hot drinks and watching events from this year’s Winter Olympic Games. Most people value the competition and the intensity and commitment its participants show. I value this level of competition because of the example it sets for our youth. I hope our children are inspired by the performances and that they understand why everyone cannot win a medal. I also hope that they fully grasp the concept that while medal winning is the ultimate goal, it cannot be the only goal. I think that it is important to realize that we don’t have to be interested in a particular sport to appreciate the tremendous training and practice necessary to perform successfully. Interest in pursuing a particular sport is not my primary focus; learning about intensity and high level competition is. If you are interested in something, believe me, there is a competition at a very high level for it. I hope that the Olympics inspires our children to find the thing they are passionate about and pursue it to the highest levels.
2563 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 690-1269 www.guilderlandmartialarts.com
Having a link to the state organization that is linked to the Olympic training facility in Colorado which is linked to the International Olympic Committee makes me very proud of our school and our competing students. Knowing that events we attend like state and national championships have participants that will be in the Olympics is inspiring, intense and according to me quite cool. Not every martial art and not every Taekwondo school is hooked to the Olympics. I will never be an Olympian, but competing next to those that are or will be Olympians and taking students to do the same is awesomely fulfilling. I started Taekwondo in the 1980s inspired by the Olympics in Lake Placid. When the sport of Taekwondo was added to the Olympics in 1988 I attended my first state championships. In many ways the Olympics has inspired me to pursue a life in Taekwondo that allows me to help others become inspired to pursue excellence in physical fitness and great character. I hope others become inspired for excellence and do their bit to change the world the best they can.
The timing of the Olympics is very beneficial to us this year since our Taekwondo state championships is in two weeks. I am particularly hopeful that my competitors are inspired by the Olympians and infuse that excitement into their training and discipline. This state championships for WTF (World Taekwondo Federation) style Taekwondo is the first step in a long ladder of events that can lead to the Olympics. Of course there are only an elite few that have the commitment and perseverance to make the team, but it is nice to teach and promote a specific style of Taekwondo that is just one of two martial arts in the Olympics. I will leave the trivia question of the other for you to discover.

EATING YOUR NEST EGG
R
ecently, home equity loans and lines of credit have become the bane of my practice, mainly because of abuse by one spouse. Now, I do not want my colleagues in banking and financial services who also write for this publication to show up at my door screaming that I am trying to drive business away from them. That is not the case at all. While these products can provide resources for many good reasons, they can also be misused in ways to hurt your spouse, and often, yourself. When deciding to take out a home equity loan or line of credit (because this is just another mortgage), here are some things to think about: 1. Paying off separate debt. If your spouse comes into the marriage with debt (credit card, mortgage, student loans), you may think it is a good idea to take out a home equity loan on the home either you or both of you own to pay off this debt. This may actually be an excellent way to pay off the debt as it can reduce interest, allow you to deduct the interest, and provide a net savings to your family. However, there are a few things that you should keep in mind. • Are one or both of you making payments towards the home equity loan to pay it off? For example, if you paid $500.00 per month on your student loan, are you using the same $500.00 per month to pay off your home equity loan? • Is there a plan if the relationship does not work out? Have you prepared a pre- or post-nuptial agreement? For example, you take out a home equity loan to pay off your spouse’s credit card debts of $10,000.00. You do not pay down the loan and the relationship then dissolves. Are you responsible for all or part of this loan? These are items that should be discussed and formalized in an agreement.
2. Is one person using the loan without the other person’s knowledge? If both own the property and/or have a vested interest, then it is very important that both be signatories for any withdrawals, checks on the line of credit, etc. 3. “Emergencies – Some people take out lines of credit for a possible “emergency, but spouses may not agree on the definition of an emergency. Think about what constitutes an “emergency and discuss this with your spouse. 4. What are your goals? If your goal is to someday own your home outright, then further borrowing against it will push that goal away. For a large purchase such as a car, consider a low interest loan from the dealers. If you have an emergency medical procedure, you can generally work out a payment plan with the healthcare facility. For many other emergencies, a personal loan or utilizing a credit card may be appropriate. When borrowing money, whether alone or with another person, make sure that you have clear goals and have protected yourself so your goals can be realized.

Tea 101
Tea
What is tea? Tea comes from two closely related plants; Camilia Sinensis (China) and Camilia Assamica (India). White, Green, Oolong, Black and Pu-erh are all from the tea bush, but what happens after new growth is harvested determines the tea type. White and Green teas are the least processed and are either sun dried or pan fried after picking. Oolong is picked then partially oxidized; while Black tea is fully oxidized. Pu-erh is aged black tea. Traditionally aged in caves, it is known for its earthy finish. Green tea has a vegetal or grassy flavor; oolong is more buttery and nutty; and black tea is characterized as malty.

If you cut open a paper tea bag you will find dust. That’s what the industry calls the smallest particles in the sorting process. Dust is produced when pounds of whole leaf tea are processed. The damaged and dried pieces fall to the bottom of the netting or bag. This is scooped up and put into tea bags. Part of our evaluation of new tea is looking for fresh looking leaves with sheen. This is indicative of a leaf that isn’t dried out, has much of its essential oils intact, and will provide a great amount of flavor. Another benefit from whole leaf tea is the ability to re-steep. Many teas such as Oolong, Pu-erh and Jasmine Pearls are shaped in a way that allows several infusions. Utilizing a brewing basket will allow the leaves to expand and circulate in the hot water to draw out everything the leaves have to offer.
If the plant, flower, or leaf that you are steeping doesn’t contain the tea plant, it is a tisane. Fruit and herbal tisanes are caffeine free. Herbal tisanes are known for their medicinal qualities. For example, the well-known chamomile “tea” is known for its calming affects. Rooibos (ROY-bos), another caffeine-free tisane, comes from the red bush, a plant indigenous to South Africa, and is known to aid digestion. Yerba Mate from Argentina, has as much caffeine as coffee, but does not produce the caffeine-related crashes that some people experience with coffee.
A great cup of tea is a pleasure to drink, so make sure you are getting the most out of your tea leaves!
Joyce and Matt Zacharewicz of Short and Stout Tea Company 1736A Western Avenue, Albany (Just 1/2 mile off I-87 Exit/Opposite Westmere Firehouse)
How should I brew my tea? Each type of tea has a recommended water temperature and length of steeping for optimal flavor. Generally, a teaspoon of tea leaves is used for an 8 oz. cup of tea. Some teas may call for more and the drinker can always adjust the amount to his/ her taste. Here is a brewing cheat sheet to go by:

Guilderland, NY- Your biggest dilemma when buying another home is deciding whether to buy first or sell first. Either way is risky because you could wind up owning two homes or none at all. Well, our guaranteed sale program solves this. You see, before you even list with us, we prepare a total market analysis of your home, including a computerized printout of all comparable home sales, absorption rates, and current listings in the area. Using this information, together with you we determine a market value for your home. You then receive our upfront guarantee in writing before we even begin to market your home. This is better than RISK FREE because it gives you the security of knowing that your home is guaranteed to sell. This is a really important guarantee for you as a home seller, because you win no matter what happens. Let me explain: We will aggressively market your home for 120 days. In the unlikely event that your home does not sell within the 120 day period, we will buy your home ourselves for the upfront guaranteed sale price that we set together. You’re doubly protected, because if during this 120 day timeframe you receive an offer from an outside buyer that is over the guaranteed price, you get the higher offer, not us. You see, we’re taking all the risk so you don’t have to. With our program you know your home will sell, and that you will always get the highest offer (whether it’s our agreed guaranteed sale price, or a higher offer from an outside buyer). When you access our guaranteed sale program, you can look forward to finding your next home with much greater peace of mind. Now when you see a home
you like, you can immediately place a firm cash offer because you’ll know how much money your home will sell for. The best part about our guaranteed sale program is that it eliminates the usual stress and worry that most home sellers experience. No emotional roller coaster ride about getting stuck with owning two homes or no home at all. Our guaranteed home sale program makes house-hunting fun. To find out about how our program can benefit you, please leave your address after the tone to receive your FREE industry report entitled, “How to Avoid Getting Stuck with Two Homes”. If you are planning to put your home on the market within the next six months or less, you’ll need to organize yourself quickly. Simply call us at 1-800-448-7016 Ext 1001 So if you plan to make your move within six months or less, please ask for Report #1. If you think it will be longer than six months before you list your home, the choices that you face are a little broader. So if you plan to list your home in longer than six months, please ask for Report #2. Again, to receive your free report, please leave us your mailing address, email address, and the specific address of the property you are interested in selling. As always if you want to get an idea of the value of your home instantly, simply visit us at www. Albanynyhomevalues.com and enter your property address for a free instant property evaluation.

with both personal and national crises. In the The Devil I Know by Clare Kilroy, recovering alcoholic Tristram St. Lawrence, long estranged from his family, finds himself unexpectedly confronting his rocky history when he faces legal proceedings in Dublin and faces from his past begin crossing his path.
Did you know Bram Stoker was Irish? In The Forgotten Writings of Bram Stoker, editor John Edgar Browning offers a selection of previously lost or unknown poetry, fiction, journalism pieces and more by this famous author. A Week in Winter, written by beloved storyteller Maeve Binchy and published after her death, tells of a woman’s efforts to turn a seaside mansion in Ireland into a bed and breakfast retreat. It’s a place where lives can and will change. A great “feel -good” read. The Spinning Heart by Donal Ryan follows the residents of a small town in County Tipperary, as they struggle to overcome the hardships of a collapsing economy. This award-winning debut offers multiple perspectives on how individuals cope
Well-known author Nora Roberts often has Irish-American characters in her novels, and the latest, Dark Witch, is no exception. American Iona Sheehan travels to her family’s ancestral home in County Mayo. There, Iona builds a new life for herself, meets her extended family, finds employment at an Irish stable, and begins a relationship with bold and attractive Boyle McGrath. Will an ancient evil curse steal her chance for love and hope for the future?

Johnston was unique among ships, as it never lost a passenger during eleven cross-Atlantic voyages. This book details the supreme efforts of the ship’s captain, crew, and doctor in delivering their passengers alive, and also recounts one family’s search for the American dream.
In The Book of Killowen by Erin Hart, archaeologist Cormac Maguire, and pathologist Nora Gavin have their hands full when two bodies are discovered in the trunk of a car. One is a bog preserved body, dating back to 9th century. Pinned beneath it is the corpse of a television celebrity who disappeared months earlier. The Story of Ireland: A History of the Irish People by Neil Hegarty takes a fresh look at Irish history, covering the earliest evidence of civilization (A.D. 433), and the nation’s often tumultuous past, through to the present time. All Standing: the Remarkable Story of the Jeannie Johnston by Kathryn Miles focuses on a dark chapter in Irish History—the Irish Potato Famine. Over 1 million Irish citizens fled their home in the years during and after the famine. Many were forced to take “coffin ships,” so-called because of the number of passengers who did not survive the journey. The Jeanie
The Atlas of the Great Famine, edited by John Crowley, seeks to place the Irish Famine in historic context through maps of population decline, historical analysis and examples of poetry, contemporary art, written and oral accounts, illustrations, and photographs. Crowley has created a far-reaching and strikingly illustrated work. Of course, nothing compares to seeing a place first-hand. If you’re feeling inspired to plan an Irish adventure, you’ll want to watch the DVD 15 Capital Cities to Check Out before YOU Check Out, which covers the sights, sounds, history, and folklore of Dublin.

GETTING THE MOST OUT OF YOUR SUPPLEMENTS By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling
Oh, the great supplement debate! Some people take supplements by the handful while others take the stance that supplements are unnecessary. You may feel that all supplements do is turn your urine bright yellow and you end up flushing them down the toilet. Well, if you have ever eaten asparagus, then you are aware of the strong aroma of your urine shortly after the meal. Does that mean you just urinated out your asparagus? Of course not! That is the byproduct of nutrient metabolism. This is also the reason for the color change of urine when consuming vitamins. If you don’t believe in taking vitamins, well, I have news for you. You are consuming vitamins whether you intend to our not. Have you ever wondered how a bowl of Total Cereal can contain 100% of our recommended daily allowance for vitamins and minerals? If you read the ingredients, it is basically a flaky chewable multivitamin. Do you really think that is a nutritious food? Many foods are fortified, which means, vitamins and minerals are added into the product during manufacturing. Here is my opinion on supplements. I feel that we should try get as many nutrients by eating REAL FOOD with a focus on plant based items. If you are able to take that one step further and try organic, then even better. But I feel that everyone, including children, need a quality multiple vitamin/mineral, fish oil supplement, vitamin D (September – May) and a probiotic. This is what I take and I give my family. If you have additional health concerns then supplement accordingly.
Magnesium: Magnesium is often found together with calcium so I wanted to mention a few things about it. Our ratio of calcium to magnesium intake should be 2:1. Since we tend to eat large amounts of dairy products and take calcium supplement this ratio is often imbalanced. Magnesium is a fantastic muscle relaxer. So if you suffer from muscle tension, spasm, headaches, constipation or have trouble “staying” asleep at night, then you could benefit from magnesium. Remember, calcium helps you “fall” asleep and magnesium helps you “stay” asleep. Take 30 minutes before bed to help with sleep. The magnesium malate form is specific to muscle tissue and great for muscle tension. Fish Oils: A good Omega 3, or fish oil supplement, will often contain a little Vitamin E with it because it aids in absorption. It is best taken with a meal. If you find that you are burping up the fishy taste then try capsules that are enteric coated. This will allow them to dissolve further down in your GI tract and will help with the burping issue. Vitamin D: This is a fat-soluble vitamin so make sure to take with a meal containing a little fat. If you take it with a banana, you may not absorb much of the vitamin D. Vitamin C/Iron: If you have been instructed to take an iron supplement due to low blood levels then try taking some vitamin C with it. Vitamin C aids in iron absorption and can help you get more bang for your buck.
Here are some tips to get the most out of your supplements: Calcium: Most women over the age of 45 seem to take a calcium supplement to protect their bones. Calcium competes with caffeine for absorption so taking it with your morning coffee is not the best idea. I recommend taking it with lunch or dinner for maximum absorption. The form of calcium is import as well. Calcium carbonate is not as absorbable as calcium citrate. Calcium and Vitamin D work together for absorption so if you are taking both, then do so at the same time. If you have trouble falling asleep, calcium will aid in relaxation so take it about 30 minutes before bed with food. Calcium also needs a very acidic stomach environment to be absorbed. So if you take antacids for gastric reflux, which lowers stomach acid, you are absorbing very little calcium from your food and supplements.

Just got off the phone with Punxsutawney Phyllis, the somewhat lesser known but equally precise with prognos ca ng Pennsylvanian groundhog. Good news and bad news. The bad news is that she woke up today and just sees shadows everywhere, which apparently means 6 more months of winter. Sorry, but maybe now would be a good me to go grab a pallet of ice melt at Home Depot. Got to get that girl some rose colored correc ve lenses! Good news? Well, I did just save a bunch of money on car insurance, but even be er, this means YOU now have plenty of me to start ge ng ready for SPRING CLEAN UP before the sun comes back! What a relief, instead of being stuck outside ge ng actual fresh air, you can instead breathe your own fresh air into some long neglected but necessary projects. Like I always say, “air on the side of cau on”. Ok, I just made that up, but I will be saying it daily moving forward. Ideas for making the process easier: 1. Separate unwanted items into 4 groups: household garbage, useful items to donate like clothing, recyclables (scrap metal, electronics, glass, plas c, paper) and junk (broken stuff, old furniture, wood, etc.). 2. Start with one room like the kitchen which will go fast and provide instant sa sfac on. 3. Make easy decisions-If you’re not using something, get rid of it. Don’t plan for years down the road when you “might” need it-trust me, when you finally get around to using (fill in the blank) it will be inevitable it was broken the whole me or you are missing half the pieces. 4. Let go of sen mentality. I am not going to throw away my wedding album even though I have only looked at it once in 12 years, but maybe the Smithsonian would be interested in your Na onal Geographic collec on. Probably not. Di o the toys in the garage only the squirrels play with, since your kids are in college now. Goodbye! We can help. Scrapster is family owned local business which provides a NO COST scrap metal and appliance pick up and removal service. We also offer LOW COST junk removal and clean outs. Everything is properly recycled, disposed of or donated. We are convenient, reliable, insured, and we do all the work.
