notes from the SUPERVISOR’S OFFICE

5209 Western Ave, Guilderland • (518) 356-1980 • www.townofguilderland.org Guilderland, NY - November is a quiet time in your Town parks, and an excellent time to enjoy hiking trails. I am pleased to announce the launch of Hike Guilderland!, the latest addition to useful tools on the Town website. This application, which is available on the Parks & Recreation webpage, has interactive maps of hiking trails located in the Town. You can zoom to a specific trail for a detailed description of trail options, lengths of trails, locations of trailheads, and general information useful for hikers and cyclists. The trails are also suitable for snowshoeing. These hiking trails include Tawasentha Park’s five miles of easy to moderate trails through woods and grasslands and along stream banks. Vosburgh Trails includes a 2.1 mile moderate loop trail through grasslands on Town-owned open space from trailheads on Vosburgh Drive and Millingstone Way and a 3.4 mile roundtrip moderate to difficult trail to the pedestrian bridge over the Normanskill Creek. The Mohawk Hudson Land Conservancy’s Bozen Kill Preserve, located on Westfall Road, has several short trails (0.17; 0.58 and 0.64 miles) which traverse the Bozen Kill ravine and lead to a waterfall. The Albany Pine Bush Preserve has 18 miles of ten easy to moderate trails over gentle slopes, sandy trails and woodland passages. These trails are accessible at trailheads at the end of Tera Court (at end of Willow Street) and in Volunteer Firemen’s Park at the end of DiBella Drive. More information is available at Hike Guilderland! Year round, Highway Department employees diligently keep Town roads free of obstructions that inhibit travel, limit sight distance or pose unsafe conditions for pedestrians and vehicles. In the fall, you can help Highway Department crew with this mission by raking leaves to the edge of, and not on, the road. Piles of leaves on streets reduce visibility, particularly in the fall’s lengthening nighttime, and, with heavy rainfalls, can clog storm drains, cause flooded roads, and unnecessarily increase maintenance costs. November is also the start of restricted parking which helps provide for the safe passage of school buses, emergency vehicles, and highway trucks due to accumulated snow and dark conditions. No parking is permitted on Town roads from November 1 to April 1 between 2 am and 7 am. On certain streets, there are also posted signs that limit parking to specific days and times. For the third consecutive year, this year’s fall Household Hazardous Waste Day and Confidential Document Shredding Day on Saturday, October 6th set a record with 924 participants (there were 850 participants in fall 2017 and 817 in 2016). I thank the employees of the Transfer Station and Highway Department for their hard work in these latest efforts, and residents who made generous contributions to Veterans’ outreach programs, Guilderland Food Pantry, Guilderland Animal Shelter and Guilderhaven, along with a truck load of food donations and a car load of animal supplies. To better handle the growing participation and traffic issues, the Transfer Station may hold more event days, route traffic onto Hurst Road and off of Route 146, and replace event passes with other acceptable proof of residency.

The Town’s Emergency Medical Services (“EMS”) Department is working closely with Western Turnpike Rescue Squad (“WTRS”) which has announced plans Peter G. Barber - Town Supervisor to cease ambulance operations by year end. In July, the EMS Department deployed the Town’s first ambulance which helped reduce average response times in the Carman Road area from 13 minutes to five minutes. The Town has acquired two used ambulances from WTRS, and, with the help of Highway Department mechanics, will quickly return them to active service with a Town medic and EMT on board. As WTRS continues to wind down, the Town will likely acquire WTRS’s remaining ambulances and assume control of WTRS’s two stations. The successful transition of this essential service has required close collaboration with WTRS, Altamont Rescue Squad, and the Guilderland Fire Department which has hosted the Town ambulance and its crew. This effort would not be possible without EMS Department medics and EMTs who respond to medical emergencies with dedicated passion and professionalism, Highway Department mechanics who assumed responsibility for, and take pride in, keeping Town ambulances and EMS emergency vehicles in service, and Human Resources Department for its indispensable role in the Town’s hiring of 21 part-time EMTs. At the Town Board’s Tuesday, December 18th meeting at 7:00 pm, Town Planner Kenneth Kovalchik will provide a PowerPoint presentation on proposed residential development projects. The presentation will include the Town Planner’s responses to questions raised by residents at public hearings, letters and emails. The PowerPoint will be posted on the Town website. It is last call for returning the signed property description reports for the 2019 reassessment. The response rate for homeowners is approaching 60%, a number not seen before in any local municipality according to the Town’s reassessment consultant. The Assessor will accept signed property reports until Friday, November 16th by email at assessors@ togny.org or by delivery to the Assessor’s Office. The Assessor will soon announce additional public meetings about next steps in the 2019 reassessment process. On Thursday, November 8th at 6:00pm, the Town Board will hold a public hearing on the 2019 final budget. The complete proposed budget and budget summary are available on the Town website. On Monday, November 12th, Town offices will be closed in observance of Veterans’ Day. Please take the time to remember and thank the women and men who served to protect our country and fellow citizens. On November 22nd and 23rd, Town offices will be closed for the Thanksgiving holiday. I close by wishing you an enjoyable Thanksgiving, and thank you for taking the time to read these notes. Peter G. Barber, Town Supervisor Guilderland, NY

FREE ≠ NO COST by Margaret C. Tabak, Esq.

Guilderland, NY - Family Court is a Court of limited jurisdiction in New York that deals with issues such as custody, child and spousal support, visitation, family offenses, and other related matters. The forms to start an action in Family Court are located online1 . There are no filing fees in Family Court. So far, sounds good. New York has made it accessible and free of cost to address significant issue that effect families. While beginning an action for divorce can be complicated and expensive, these piecemeal and finite issues can be quickly addressed by an individual. The downside? Well, that is the same as the upside, it is accessible and free. Unfortunately, people sometimes go to Family Court and begin litigation without looking at the big picture. At the end of their proceeding, they may have lost time with their children; be paying more support, or generally be in a worse place. Bad reasons for starting litigation: • You are mad; • Your friend/hairdresser/co-worker advised you to go to Family Court; • You want to annoy or punish the other party While Family Court is user friendly, it is still a Court of Law. All the rules in regard to evidence, civil practice, and knowledge of statutory and case law apply in Family Court. Without being familiar with these laws or procedures, you may do yourself a grave injustice.

Many times after divorce or an Order of Custody or Support has been issued, one side may want to modify it, pay less support, have more time with the children, etc. There may be valid reasons for these changes to occur. However, if your reasons, valid or not, do not fall within the framework of the law, you will be unsuccessful. If there are items that have been lying dormant, you may now bring them to light. For example, a former client’s former boyfriend was mad at her regarding a text message. He decided to bring an action to modify custody, although he does not spend the time with their children which is already allocated to him. During this process, monies that he was supposed to pay her (and which she had looked the other way about) are now coming to light. Now that she is involved in a court proceeding, paying a lawyer, missing time from work, and the emotional issues that go with it, she wants the money she is owed; and she will get it. Not only might this father end up with less time than is already allocated to him, but he is now responsible for the missed payments. Certainly, if time with the other parent is not in the child’s best interests; support monies are owed; or there has been any domestic violence in the family, Family Court provides an excellent mechanism to address these serious problems. In other words, free does not equal “no cost”. Before starting any litigation, make sure you have spoken with a knowledgeable attorney and understand the ramifications of your actions. 1

NoSnowNY with John Rodick Q. How long have you been in the snow business? A. I have been in the snow business since I was 18 years old, which would be over 30 years ago. I started with the commercial side of it and eventually switched to the residential only. Q. Where do you operate? A. My company only operates In Guilderland, NY. The map of our current service area is located on our website. We only operate in the localized neighborhoods, so we can provide a more timely service. Q. What is your phone number and website address? A. 518-461-7539 www.nosnowny.com Q. What hours do you operate? A. 24 hours a day, seven days a week when it’s snowing! Q. Why did you get into the residential snow business? A. I love the winter, I love the snow! But besides that, my company’s goal is to make winter easier for people by providing reliable and professional snow removal services. It is very rewarding to help those who struggle with the winter and those who simply don’t have time to deal with it. Q. What makes your company different? A. My team and I always look for new ideas and improved techniques to do our job and to do it better. By using tractors with snowblowers instead of trucks with plows, we get much better results: • we do a cleaner job, • we don’t tear up your lawn, • we don’t leave snow piles. What my customers also like about my business is the communication. I clearly spell out how I operate and communicate my plan for each storm.

10

Mid-November 2018 |

Modern Olympic Sport Taekwondo Q. How do you charge and what services do you include? A. My company charges by the season. Our prices are very competitive and always include a complete job of snow removal, including shoveling of your walkway and garage doors, clearing out your mailbox and following up the next day to clean-up after parked cars and street plows. Your price is the same whether we come 10 times or 26 times. We believe this is what a professional company should do. Why should you have to complete the job you pay for? We believe that if your driveway looks good, we look good! Q. What do you love most about the business? A. I love all aspects of the business, from figuring out the logistics to running a tractor and working with the customers. But my ultimate goal and passion is to change the overall perception of the residential snow removal business from “Chuck with a truck” type of operation to a professional and respectable business comprised of Snow Professionals.

Q. Do you offer other services? A. My company also offers residential anti-icing and de-icing of driveways, snow shoveling of walkways, time sensitive services, and snowbird services. In addition, we offer lawn care that can be combined into an all-in-one snow and lawn package. Q. What do you want the community to know about you? A. A Beloved Student This month I honor our beloved student Mr. McPherson who has recently passed away. For the last eight years he has been a valued member of our martial arts community. He has helped and encouraged countless students in their pursuit of excellence. Indeed, he has selflessly improved all of our lives with his great character and positive attitude. I know quite well that his contributions extend well beyond our community as well. The world and especially his family, will sorely miss him, but he will truly live on through his works of kindness. I have experienced this first hand and find I have become better in many ways because of his positive encouragement and attitude. Today we mourn his passing but tomorrow we celebrate his memory, his accomplishments, and his contributions.

DOES PAIN EQUATE TO TISSUE DAMAGE? Part 2: Pain Explained By: Dr. Kim Leis-Keeling

Guilderland, NY - Thank you all for reaching out to see if I am still alive after reading my last article. I know you have been eagerly anticipating part 2 of the story to find out how I faired with my disc herniation. Despite all that drama, by the next day I actually felt much better. I ended up taking a few days off of work to rest and patch myself back together – life doesn’t stop right? I pulled out all the tricks to get back on my feet. After all, I couldn’t have my husband drag me around like a life sized Raggedy Ann doll forever. My treatment consisted of lumbar decompression, cold laser, ice, acupuncture, massage therapy, taping, McKenzie exercises, core strength exercises and herbs. By the end of the week, I was pain free, but not completely healed. Healing takes time.

spread mulch – note to self ). Tendons, ligament and spinal discs are not very vascular so these can take longer to heal. Have you ever heard someone say that it is better to break an ankle then to sprain it?

What happens with chronic pain? When pain becomes ongoing the nervous system becomes more sensitive. The danger messenger neurons and the brain become more excitable and contribute to the problem. The threshold of pain becomes so sensitive that small triggers can cause intense pain. Thoughts and belief all become a part of the contributing triggers and the brain starts to attach a “neurotag” to the thought. Here is what I mean by all that. We have all watched America’s Funniest Home Videos where someone gets hit in the groin with a ball or flying object. The men watching will all moan & groan So let’s get back to the question of “Does pain equate to tissue damage?” The and bend over in pain. They may actually feel physical pain. But nothing best explanation of pain that I have read is from a book entitled Explain Pain happened to them…how can they experience pain? There is no tissue damage. by Dr. Lorimer Moseley and David Butler. They are neuroscientists from This is called a “neurotag.” Your brain remembers this injury very clearly and just the thought of a reoccurring injury can recreate pain in your body. This Australia who explain it very well. I’ll share a few points from their book. same thing can happen when you have re-injured the same body part over Let’s start with acute pain. When we have a new injury, there is a process and over again. that happens in the body. It starts with inflammation which triggers a cascade of events. Our nerves carry information from the injury through the spinal So what do you do about this? One of the quotes I tell patients is: “Don’t cord to the brain. The brain interprets this information and makes decisions let your diagnosis define YOU!” Just because you are diagnosed with a disc about how to respond. Often this triggers our “danger alarm system.” There bulge or herniation doesn’t mean that you have to sit in a rocking chair for the is a chemical exchange that happens between the neurons (nerve cells) which rest of your life. It is estimated that 80% of the adult population have tissue then sort the information, similar to a post office. If the brain feels the danger injury to at least one disc. But are they all walking around in pain? Some is critical, it produces pain. The brain tries to get you out of pain (danger) people don’t ever have pain. You just have to understand the extent of your by limiting movement (or in my case, my entire post office shut down and I tissue damage and how to treat or manage it. More importantly understand why you have pain. passed out). The inflammation process is the normal way the body begins healing. Most As always, if you have questions about this article please feel free to contact tissues (bone, muscles, skin, etc.) heal within 6-8 weeks. Oral Health Tips For Your Holidays Travels: Guilderland, NY - Even when you are looking forward to spending time away from home to visit family and friends for the holidays or dreaming of that long awaited vacation, there’s no place like home-especially a dental home! With a little advanced planning you can avoid taking a vacation from your dental health while holiday traveling- Prevention is the key! • Do not travel if you have a toothache. Schedule an appointment long before your trip if you suspect a problem so that you don’t end up with a tooth emergency while out of town. If you cannot find the time to visit your dentist before traveling, research local emergency dental clinics in your destination just in case. Better safe than sorry! • Keep a travel toothbrush, floss and toothpaste on hand. They can be found at almost any drug store. The size and convenience allows you to make sure you keep up with your oral hygiene while away from home. I typically recommend that you replace your old toothbrush with a new one every two to three months. However, this changes if you are traveling a lot because when you travel your toothbrush is indefinitely exposed to much more bacteria than in your own bathroom at home. Throw away your travel brush when you return home and replace it with a new one, no matter if it has hit the two to three month mark. • There are a never ending supply of germs and diseases at airports, train stations, buses, or any other place you may encounter during your travels. You can never have enough probiotics. Many studies have revealed that probiotics are good all around-from your gut to your teeth to your immune system. We recommend Florastor. Florastor contains Saccharomyces Boulardii which can recolonize and sustain flora in the large and small intestine. It also reduces the growth of candida species thus lessening inflammation and supports the immune system. • Bringing sugar free Xylitol gum with you on your travels can have many surprising benefits. Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar substitute that is clinically proven to be a natural enemy of bacteria. Xylitol stimulates saliva flow which neutralizes mouth acids. It also helps keep an alkaline environment in which acid producing bacteria cannot survive and is conducive to the remineralization of teeth with initial damage from bacterial acids. • Sugary treats are a bad idea anytime, but definitely when you’re traveling. Not only does sugar make kids too bouncy in the car, but it is very bad for your teeth too, especially when you can’t stop and brush for hours. Instead of sugary treats, choose healthy snacks that are better for your health and your teeth. Bring a cooler filled with baby carrots and broccoli instead of picking up candy bars and cookies at the pit stop. If you are planning to travel with kids, cut up fruits and veggies into sticks for easy snacking. Skip the convenience of boxed juices, which can contribute to tooth decay, and opt for water instead. I would like to take this opportunity to Thank you for reading my monthly blog. Your questions and comments have inspired me to persist and persevere in my craft to continue to provide excellence in Dentistry for Total Body Wellness. From the Library: Some wonderful events are coming up at the Library over the next couple of months. One of my favorites is the “Getting your Words into the World: A Writer’s Workshop” on Saturday, November 17, at 10:30 am. Writing for your own pleasure and for those who know and love you is a life-affirming thing. But what if you want to get your words out into the wider world, to create a book that is published and read by a wider audience? These days, it’s critically important for women’s voices to be heard. This workshop (open to men as well!) will explore the avenues available, as well as how to navigate the broader terrain of publication and self-promotion. The instructor is acclaimed author Nava Atlas, author of The Literary Ladies Guide to the Writing Life and several award-winning cookbooks, including Wild About Greens. Nava will have copies of her books to sign and sell at the end of the workshop. If you want to attend, please register by calling the Library at 518-456-2400 x 3. If it’s concerts you’re interested in, Three Quarter North, a sextet playing at GPL on Sunday, November 18, at 2 pm, is for you. Performing as part of the Library’s Sunday Concert Series, they play Americana with an emphasis on bluegrass, originals, folk, country, blues, acoustic rock, and pop standards. They’ve been known to play “Hot Tub of Tears” and “We’ve Seen Crappy Times Before,” but have been quoted as saying they “draw the line at ‘Girl Crush.’” Three Quarter North is a fun band. They love to play in front of live audiences, and say that it “doesn’t take long for our audiences to become our new friends.”

Three Quarter North, a sextet playing at GPL on Sunday, November 18, at 2 pm,

As we come closer to the Holiday Season, there are a few special events, notably “The Nutcracker,” performed by the Marcus Rogers Dance Company (of Guilderland Center), on Saturday, December 1 at 3 pm, and again on Sunday, December 2 at 3 pm. This marvelous ballet tells the story of a young girl’s favorite Christmas toy – a nutcracker – that miraculously comes alive and whisks her off to a magical kingdom populated by dolls. This event is recommended for children ages 5+.

Finally, there is the Annual Holiday Bus Trip to NYC. The buses are filling fast, so if you want to go, order soon. Very soon. Here are the details: • Cost is $50 per person.

• Buses leave the pickup point in the parking lot of FARNSWORTH MIDDLE SCHOOL (6072 State Farm Rd, Guilderland, NY 12084) precisely at 7 am, and arrive NYC about 10 am.

• You will be dropped off near Grand Central Terminal, on 42nd St, between Madison Avenue and Lexington Avenue. • You have all day to enjoy all the sights, sounds, and celebrations the city has to offer.

• Return Trip: Buses will meet you Near Grand Central Terminal just before 7 pm. Rally ’round the Bus Captain in the “Cat in the Hat” hat. Please be on time! The buses will leave NYC at 7 pm, and get back to the parking lot about 10 pm. • There is a Bus Captain on each bus; you’ll be given his/her cell phone number as well as a map of midtown Manhattan.

To purchase tickets, please go to guilderlandlibrary.org/nyc, or buy by calling Carol at the Guilderland Chamber of Commerce at 518-456-6611. I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving! Regards, Tim Director Guilderland Public Library 20

Short and Stout Tea Company with Joyce and Matt Zacharewicz

Q. It’s been a little while since we heard from you. How is everything going? A. Things have been phenomenal. We had just celebrated our 5-year anniversary for the Tea Lounge at 1736a Western Av. Over the past several years, we grew in all the ways we hoped for. We have traveled to over a dozen tea farms in three different countries. We were fortunate to bring some of our staff along for the ride. Now we offer these teas in a section called “Tea Farm Direct”. We have also expanded our food selection with both sweet and savory pastries including some customized panini style grilled cheeses. Lastly, our newest venture is a second location in Crossgates Mall.

Q. Matcha, I think I heard about that. A. Yes, matcha is the traditional way tea is drunk in Japan. It is fine green tea powder that is whisked in hot water. Matcha entered the American conscience through the fitness industry. It’s true that the components that make green tea “good” is increased when drinking matcha. That is because the body absorbs more antioxidants and polyphenols since you are consuming the tea plant as opposed to just steeping it out. This also means you’re getting a higher dose of caffeine and L-Theanine. That last amino acid is special because it gives you a calming and soothing feeling.

Q. Wow, a second location, where in the mall? A. We are located on the 2nd Floor near JCPenney. The store is a departure from the cozy lounge on Western Ave. There you’ll still find the 130 different teas, but there is a bigger selection of accessories and tea paraphernalia. Our tea bar in Crossgates focus more on matcha with seating only for about eight. We can brew all of our teas hot or iced and send you on the go or you can purchase the loose tea to brew at home.

Q. So, a manufacturer grinds green tea in a blender? A. Well, I can’t speak for mass produced matcha that is found in the grocery store, but we made a direct source during our trip to Japan last year. Our connection is a small tea farm who produces their own tea and matcha, which isn’t always the case. They select only high grade green tea cultivar to produce matcha and properly shade the tea bush before harvesting to increase the chlorophyll which gives the characteristic of a natural bright green color and sweetness to the tea. The farm stone grinds matcha after we place an order, guaranteeing the freshness. It’s amazing to see the care they give to their tea plants and the process. For example, the grinding of the matcha take 24 hours to produce just a pound. It is purposefully slow so heat doesn’t break down the healthy compounds.

Q. Anything else special at the mall location. A. Yes, macarons have been such a hit at the lounge that we knew we had to bring them to Crossgates. Macarons are a traditional French pastries and are easily confused with macaroons. Macaroons are those coconut mounds sometimes dipped in chocolate, but French macarons are completely different. Macaron (with one “o” pronounced Ma-car-on is a colorful cookie made of two delicate almond meringue based shells that are crispy on the outside and soft on the inside with jam, butter cream or chocolate ganache filling. We offer about 15 different flavors including traditional pistachio to exotic lychee rose. All of our French macarons are gluten free and hand made by a French pastry chef in NYC. My personal favorite is honey lavender.

Q. Those sound delicious. Where can I those? A. We have them at the Tea Lounge and Bubble Tea Bar, which is located at 1736a Western Av and is open on Monday to Saturday 10-7:30 and on Sunday 11-5. The Tea Retail and Matcha Bar in Crossgates Mall is on the 2nd Floor near JCPenney. That location is open on Monday to Saturday 109:30 and Sunday 11-6. We also sell tea online as well at www.ShortAndStoutTea.com.

Q. Anything else you would like to add? A. No, thank you for your time and “At Short and Stout, It’s Time for Tea!”
