Embrace the Spirit of Christmas at St Mary ’s Cathedral
A Christm as Message Most Rev Timothy Costelloe SDB Archbishop of Perth
Dear Friends, In a recent and in some ways rather startling interview which Pope Francis gave to a magazine in Italy, and which has been translated into many languages since, the Holy Father offered a very beautiful and very challenging image for an understanding of the role of the Church in today’s world. I see the Church,” he said, “as a field hospital after battle. It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugars! You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else. Heal the wounds, heal the wounds … And you have to start from the ground up”. The Pope also adds in this same interview that “the thing the Church most needs today is the ability to heal wounds and to warm the hearts of the faithful. It (the Church) needs nearness, proximity… I have been personally very moved by these words and am trying to take them to heart as a programme for my own role as Archbishop of Perth. At the same time I would like to offer them as words of advice and encouragement to all of us. Particularly as we celebrate the great feast of Christmas I would like to suggest that the very best gift we can give to others, both family and friends, is the healing of wounds and the warming of hearts. We live in a beautiful world but it is a world, and a society, that is also deeply wounded. We carry some of those wounds in our own hearts and, even more tragically, we can be the cause of pain and suffering for others, even those we love the most.
Sometimes it is in our own families that wounds most need healing and hearts most need warming.

from the Archbishop Christmas is a time when we remember that God has come near to us in Jesus, precisely to heal our wounds and warm our hearts. In the new born baby lying in the manger we see what it means to say that God loves us and that love is expressed in closeness, as love always is. God wants to be so close to us, in fact, that he becomes one of us, sharing in everything that is ours as human beings, except sin of course, and in turn inviting us to share everything that is his. The early Christians, reflecting on this, used to say with great boldness that God became one of us so that we might become one with God. This is why, in the Gospel of Matthew, the new born child is given the name “Emmanuel”, a name which means “God is with us” (Matthew 1:23). As this little child, born in the stable of Bethlehem, grows up and begins his life’s work he will describe that work in this way: “to bring good news to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, to give sight to the blind, to set the downtrodden free, and to announce a year of favour from the Lord” (Luke 4:18-19). This is what it means, of course, to heal wounds and warm hearts. The four gospels are full of stories in which Jesus does precisely this. Sometimes he heals physical wounds, as when he restored the sight of the man born blind (John 9:1-40). Often he heals the deeper, spiritual wounds, as when he forgave Peter after Peter had denied him three times (John 21:15-17). In both cases, and in so many others, he warmed hearts that had grown cold and hard through fear, rejection, suffering or despair. Because we, as Christians, are followers of Jesus, we too are called to heal wounds and warm hearts just as he did. The giving of gifts at Christmas can be both a sign and a practical way of bringing warmth and healing into people’s lives. It all depends of course on whether the gifts we give really are an expression of what lies in our own hearts. If we want to be close to others, if we want to bring wholeness and joy to their lives, if we want to set them free from whatever is oppressing or troubling them, and we express this through our gift-giving, then we are the healers God is calling us to be. And of course, because it is what lies in our hearts rather than what lies under the wrapping paper that really matters, we will want to be and try to be “healers of wounds and warmers of hearts” not just on Christmas Day but every day. This is my wish and prayer for all of you at Christmas. May it be a time of deep happiness, of reconciliation and peace, and of joyful hope for the future. A happy and holy Christmas to you all. Yours sincerely,
+Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB Archbishop of Perth

A Christmas Message from the Dean Rev Monsignor Michael Keating Dean, St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth
Dear Friends, It is a real privilege for any priest to serve in St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth. Every Sunday, we see the Church Universal as it were. People of all ages and of all nationalities come to worship here. During lunch time on Sundays my assistant priests and I often share with the Archbishop, stories of the variety of people we have met as we stand at the front doors to greet them after the Masses. We welcome people from South American Countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Venezuela as well as people from the USA, Mexico and Canada. We see travellers from Africa and Europe – countries such as Italy, England, Ireland, Germany and France, as well as so many people from Asia - the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Korea, China, India and so on. This is the Church ‘Catholic’. Regardless of where we live, how we live, the language we speak, the colour of our skin… United by Faith, we are indeed ‘One Catholic Family’. Everyone is welcome at St Mary’s Cathedral. We welcome people of all religions, all faiths, to join us in peace and friendship. Christmas at St Mary’s Cathedral is perhaps one of my most favourite times of the year, as thousands come to honour the birth of Jesus. It is truly uplifting to welcome so many people from Perth, interstate and around the world, all of whom come to embrace the real ‘Spirit of Christmas’. It’s lovely to see the families who come to each of our Christmas Masses – Mums and Dads, Grandmothers and Grandfathers, Aunts and Uncles, Brothers and Sisters, friends and loved ones. I’m sure they all look forward to a delicious Christmas lunch or dinner, get excited as they open their Christmas presents and really enjoy the laughter and love which seems to flow in abundance as they spend time with each other during the festive season. But it is especially pleasing that each and every one of them has taken time to come to Church to give thanks to God and remember the real message of Christmas … LOVE. “God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in him should have eternal life” (John 3:16). Archbishop Costelloe and I, my assistant priests Fr Jean-Noël Marie, Fr Michael Quynh Do and Fr Stephen Ochola, warmly invite you, your family, your friends and loved ones, to join us at St Mary’s Cathedral this Christmas… and celebrate the joy, the love, the smiles, the laughter with us! We’d love to see you. I wish you all a Blessed and Holy Christmas. Yours sincerely,
Rev Monsignor Michael Keating Dean, St Mary’s Cathedral.

World Youth Day Commissioning Mass
7th July
During the Commissioning Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday, July 7, Archbishop Costelloe told the pilgrims travelling to World Youth Day in Brazil to “be ready, be open and expect to be surprised in the way God can work in your life.” There was standing room only at the Cathedral, as the huge congregation warmly welcomed and applauded the many pilgrims from parishes and groups throughout the Archdiocese, who were commissioned to be representatives of the Catholic community of Perth and witnesses to the faith. The pilgrims were overwhelmed and amazed by the encouragement of the whole community. WYD leader and pilgrim Matt Tuson said, “It was really great to feel the support of the Archbishop, as well as the whole congregation behind us.” Archbishop Timothy Costelloe gave an inspirational homily that captured the essence of what World Youth Day entails. He said, “World Youth Day is a celebration of our Catholic Faith which is simply a celebration of Jesus Christ, who calls us to live our lives as richly, fully, joyfully and with much integrity. Pilgrimage is really a privileged time, a special gift of grace, when the Lord intends, if you’re ready to let him, to begin to shape you powerfully into the person he is calling you to be. The person you are made to be,” said Archbishop Costelloe. The Mass concluded with all World Youth Day pilgrims being invited to the altar and with the congregation raising their arms in prayer for the journey of the young people. A total of 72 pilgrims, comprising three Catholic Youth Ministry staff and eight chaplains including Archbishop Timothy Costelloe and Bishop Donald Sproxton, travelled to Brazil for the World Youth Day celebrations. Editor’s Note: World Youth Day is the largest gathering in human history introduced by our late Pope John Paul II, with approximately four million people recorded to have attended Mass in Manila, Philippines in 1995. This year, an estimated two million people took part in World Youth Day in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.

A Warm Welcome from the Dean Rev Monsignor Michael Keating Dean, St Mary’s Cathedral, Perth
Dear Friends, St Mary’s Cathedral continues to draw thousands of visitors each and every week. There is an almost constant stream of people clicking cameras, saying a prayer, being impressed by the building, the stained glass windows, the Chapels and the Crypt. Our Cathedral is definitely a “must see” for visitors to Perth. Thank you for your continued support and generous gifts to help with the expensive maintenance of this iconic Cathedral building. As you see the rising damp damage in the porch and near the baptismal font, remember our endeavour to deal with this as soon as money becomes available. Many people generously paid for the restoration of the Cathedral – we need your ongoing help to maintain it. I am delighted to share with you information on two of our special Christmas activities at the Cathedral this year.
Christmas Community Singing – Sunday 8th December from 2.00-4.00pm Prepare for Christmas with a fun, social afternoon of singing Advent music and Christmas carols – including the Hallelujah Chorus sung with the Cathedral’s historic Dodd organ and of course, the now traditional Miss Maud afternoon tea is included (served in the Parish Centre and courtyard). Registrations/Tickets are available at cathedral.music@perthcatholic.org.au ($12 / $8 concession). Tickets are also available directly from the Cathedral Piety Stall.
Christmas Childrens’ Voices – Special Childrens’ Mass Be a very special part of the Cathedral celebrations on Christmas Eve as we assemble our annual choir of children’s voices to celebrate the new-born King. Repertoire includes well-loved carols and John Rutter’s famous ‘Star Carol’. Open to children between the ages of 7-14. Places are limited, so registration is essential. Please contact Jacinta Jakovcevic, Director of Cathedral Music at: cathedral.music@perthcatholic.org.au by Tuesday, 10th December.

Spanning the Road
The bricks in red and brown reach for the sky, they here and there make way for sliding doors. An array of wards where the patients lie, their day or night, brought to a sudden pause.
The wards look out upon a tranquil scene, to fountains and spires, a visual treat; Our Cathedral: Our urban oasis, the city from here in full retreat.
Back on the ground, another busy day: The wailing sirens mock at softer sounds. A medic, a prelate go on their way, a healing for the body and the soul.
A big mission spans this small city-road, The work of love beyond the traffic code.

St Mary’s Cathedral Welcomes a New Branch of Young Leaders in a new era of Catholic Knights A new Branch of the Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross in Western Australia was formally commissioned at St Mary’s Cathedral on 14 July 2013. Cathedral Branch No. 28 was initiated by Tristan Kolay, Deputy State Chairman – State Affairs and Youth Issues, and comprises of young Catholic men from across the Archdiocese of Perth. Established in Western Australia in February 1922, the Order supports and assists the aged, infirmed and the youth through financial and non-financial means. The emergence of the Order of the Knights of the Southern Cross lay in the discrimination, prejudice and sectarianism confronting Catholics in Australia, in the early years of the 20th century. In the ensuing years, members of the Order went quietly about the task of correcting discrimination against Catholics. Today, the Order has a broad program of community service. It actively supports the diverse work of the Church in the wider community. “The Order has a long and proud tradition of assisting those in need in the Western Australian community” said George Sekulla, State Chairman. “Our members individually and collectively endeavour to improve the spiritual and economic well-being of all.”
To ensure a sustainable Order for the future, State Council has focused on developing a stronger connection with young Catholic men from a range of backgrounds and professions. Cathedral Branch has been a positive outcome of this strategy. “The current strategic direction of Cathedral Branch No. 28 is the development and the growth of youth ministry leaders in the Archdiocese of Perth” said newly installed Branch Chairman, Tristan Kolay. “To achieve this end, our current approach includes structured mentoring, leadership formation and faith education. As we grow as a Branch we hope to achieve greater depth in service to build Christ’s kingdom through developing Catholic youth leaders in Perth and beyond.” One of the most active lay Catholic organisations in Western Australia, members of the Knights of the Southern Cross last year set records in the hours of community service and financial assistance to those in need. Active Catholic men, who are interested in serving the community and helping those in need, are encouraged to contact the Order’s State Office on (08) 9368 2503 or by email kscwa.seo@perthcatholic.org.au or view the website www.kscwa.org.au

to St Mary’s Cathedral
On Tuesday 3 September 2013, more than five hundred guests including relatives, dignitaries, clergy and parishioners of the Archdiocese of Perth, together with members of the Redemptorist Community of North Perth, gathered in St Mary’s Cathedral for the reinterment in the Cathedral crypt of Perth’s fourth Bishop and first Archbishop, The Most Rev Patrick Joseph Clune CSsR DD.
It brought to a conclusion a process that began in 2009 of reinterring all seven of the former and deceased Bishops and Archbishops of Perth, who are, in order of service:- Bishop John Brady, Bishop Martin Griver, Bishop Matthew Gibney, Archbishop Patrick Clune, Archbishop Redmond Prendiville, Archbishop Launcelot Goody, Archbishop William Foley. In his Homily, Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the Redemptorist Order, of whom Archbishop Clune was a member, for their willingness to agree to the request of the Clune family that the body of their relative and the former Archbishop of Perth be exhumed from the Redemptorist section of Karrakatta Cemetery and reinterred in the Cathedral Crypt.
As part of his Homily, available in full on the Archdiocese website, Archbishop Costelloe said, “Archbishop Clune is remembered as being a ‘happy man’. He was warm, welcoming, affable and approachable. These are very attractive human qualities, of course, but carrying the heavy responsibilities he did, we must believe that these qualities were also special gifts of grace, given to a man who was indeed, as a genuine disciple of Saint Alphonsus, a follower of Christ with a heart full of joy. It was surely Archbishop Clune’s great faith in God, nourished in his family and deepened through his life and ministry as a Redemptorist, which enabled him to carry the responsibility of his office with such grace. As we remember him tonight, we find ourselves invited to allow God to be more and more at the heart and soul of our daily lives, as he was in the life of Archbishop Clune”.

DID YOU KNOW Archbishop Clune, the fourth bishop of Perth, convinced the authorities in Rome that the time had come for Western Australia to assume its proper and independent place within the Church in Australia. He suggested the new Province incorporate the whole of the state of Western Australia. On August 28, 1913, Bishop Clune, the fourth bishop of Perth, became the first Archbishop of Perth. He also laid the foundation stone for the new ‘neo-Gothic’ addition to St Mary’s Cathedral on the 25th of April, 1926. Photography by David Nicolson

Farewell to Sr Dolores Coffey RSM A celebration of appreciation was held at St Mary’s Cathedral for Sr Dolores Coffey RSM, the retiring director of the Aboriginal outreach agency, Daydawn Advocacy Centre … a LifeLink supported agency. Archbishop Emeritus Barry Hickey joined many Sisters of Mercy, friends and volunteers to bid farewell to Sr Dolores. Sr Dolores, from County Meath, Ireland, was professed in 1967 and then came out to Victoria Square. “I started in Victoria Square [site of Mercy school, Mercedes College and St Mary’s Cathedral] and I ended in Victoria Square,” she said. With a background in education and social justice, she has also worked with the First Nation peoples in Canada, as well as refugees in North America, together with the Jesuits. Sr Dolores was appointed the Director of Daydawn Advocacy Centre in 2007. An initiative of the Perth Archdiocese, Daydawn Advocacy Centre promotes the individual rights and full participation of the Indigenous population in society, especially the Noongar people of the South West. “We are all precious,” Archbishop Emeritus Hickey said in his address. “Daydawn is a different agency, it’s an advocacy; the people on the bottom of the rung are a priority and Sr Dolores has taken on this priority.” Sr Dolores said she hadn’t made any plans yet regarding her retirement but she leaves with fond memories. “I’m going to miss the people, the amazing advocates and the Indigenous families.” The future of Daydawn remains bright: “It will continue advocating for the Indigenous families with government and non-government agencies,” she said. 16

National Marriage Day Mass
13th Aug
More than 200 people attended a special Mass at St Mary’s Cathedral to commemorate National Marriage Day, jointly hosted by the Australia Family Association WA and the Knights of the Southern Cross WA. Certificates of Witness to Marriage were presented to 9 couples including one couple who had been married for 60 years. The certificates were happily presented by Professor Ron and Mrs Mavis Pirola, Australian Family Association Ambassadors for Marriage for 2012-13. Professor Pirola said, in part, “marriage is probably the single most important thing which happens in the life of most people. National Marriage Day was a reminder to me that my relationship with Mavis was of central importance, not only to us, but to our children and grandchildren, providing them with the biological link and security of identity that everyone needs”.

Statue of Our Lady of Fatima Visits Our Cathedral Our Lady of Fatima is a title for the Virgin Mary due to her apparitions to three shepherd children at Fatima, Portugal on the thirteenth day over six consecutive months in 1917, beginning on May 13. The three children were Lucia Santos (who later became a nun) and her cousins Jacinta and Francisco Marto. The statue was sculpted from the description of Our Lady by Sister Lucia. The history of the International Pilgrim Virgin Statue began in 1946, when the youth of Portugal attended a Congress in Fatima and took the original Fatima Statue from display in the Cova de Iria on their pilgrimage to Lisbon. Since then, the Pilgrim Virgin Statue has visited more than 100 countries bringing the message of hope to millions of people. Many miracles and graces have been reported wherever the statue travels, including the shedding of tears many times. Western Australia hosted the International Pilgrim of the Virgin Statue of Our Lady of Fatima from 16-22 August. On the actual Feast Day of Our Lady, 22nd of August, the Statue of Our Lady of Fatima visited St Mary’s Cathedral for the third time – 1996, 2006 and now 2013. More than 800 faithful attended the midday Mass celebrated by Emeritus Archbishop Barry Hickey, and it was standing room only as more than 1200 people packed St Mary’s Cathedral that evening for a special Mass celebrated by Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB. Archbishop Costelloe said that the crowded Cathedral exemplified the special place of honour the Blessed Virgin Mary held in the hearts of Catholics. In his homily, the Archbishop reflected on how Vatican II saw the Blessed Virgin Mary as a person of faith and discipleship. Rev Fr Brennan Sia Celebrating the Ordination of
Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB ordained Deacon Brennan Sia to the Priesthood at St Mary’s Cathedral on Friday, 27th of September. More than 600 guests witnessed the joyous occasion including family, friends and 60 priests.
In the Archbishop’s Homily, he said: “As we gather in the cathedral this evening to celebrate this Mass in which Brennan will, through the mysterious presence and power of the Holy Spirit, be transformed from within so that he can be a living sign of Jesus among his people as their good shepherd, I am very conscious that our new Pope, Pope Francis, is deeply engaged in the task of teaching us, not just by his words but also and much more by his actions, both what it means to be a true disciple of Jesus and what it means to be a good shepherd to God’s people. Because of this, and because of the particular gospel passage which Brennan has chosen for tonight’s Mass, where Jesus is moved to pity because the people are like sheep without a shepherd, I want to invite all of us to reflect on just what it is Brennan is being called to tonight.
20
27th Sept
This is important for you, Brennan, because the task of being a living image, an icon we might say, of the Good Shepherd, tonight becomes the project of the rest of your life. It won’t always be easy, and you won’t always succeed brilliantly – none of us do – but from tonight onwards, in a way that simply hasn’t been true for you before, this is your call, this is your privilege, and this will be the source of your deep happiness. But it isn’t just important for you to reflect on the meaning of tonight’s liturgy. It is also important for all of us for as your brothers and sisters in the community of the Church we are being called tonight just as surely as you are – in our case called to accompany you – with our prayers, with our support, with our example, and with our love”.
Confirmation in the Cathedral
20th Oct
On the 20th of October 2013, fifty Candidates were Confirmed in the Cathedral by Bishop Donald Sproxton, Auxiliary Bishop of Perth. Some of the Candidates were Adults and the majority came from a variety of schools in the Archdiocese. These included Trinity College, Aquinas College, Mercedes College and Ursula Frayne Catholic College. Some of the Candidates had been prepared in their schools, others by Cathedral Catechists. Among those Confirmed were some members of the Cathedral Choir and two Altar Servers. At the end of the Mass, the Bishop presented certificates and a picture of Pope Francis. The day of the Confirmation was “Mission Sunday.” It was a wonderful day to think about how Confirmation makes us all “Missionaries” and “Apostles”. Archbishop Thanks Parish Priests & Appeal Representatives for their support of his ‘Christmas Appeal for LifeLink’ Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB, joined by Auxiliary Bishop Donald Sproxton, invited more than 130 parish priests and parish representatives to a special Liturgical Service at St Mary’s Cathedral on Tuesday evening, 29 October. Archbishop Costelloe said: “This special service affords me the opportunity to directly thank all the priests and parish representatives for their wonderful support they provide to my appeal each year. They are the vital ‘link’ which helps facilitate the sharing of my Christmas Message and Appeal with parishioners throughout the Archdiocese”. In his Address, Archbishop Costelloe said “We are disciples of Jesus, and our true vocation, the real basis of our lives as Christians, must be our willingness to allow God to draw us into a communion of love and life with Jesus so that it is with his eyes that we see, his ears that we hear, his voice that we speak, and his heart with which we love. This is really what LifeLink is all about. It is not just about the amount of money we raise, although that is obviously important for without it we are not able to offer the help people so desperately need. LifeLink, and our involvement in it, is about responding to the presence of the Lord in our lives, who through his Holy Spirit develops within us a deep spirit of compassion, a spirit which in a sense leaves us with no option but to do what we can for others in need” Following the service, guests were invited to the Cathedral Parish Centre to enjoy a cup of tea and coffee and light refreshments, a chance to discuss the forthcoming appeal.
29th Oct
The Archbishop’s Christmas Appeal for LifeLink will be officially launched in all parishes in the Archdiocese on the weekend of Saturday 16 and Sunday 17 November 2013. Archbishop Costelloe will personally launch the appeal via a pre-recorded video message to parishioners, which parishes have been requested to show at the end of each Mass. The Archbishop hopes to raise a minimum of $600,000 to help people in need this Christmas. Your support in helping to make this possible would be greatly appreciated.
