For centuries, children have learned about the ‘Tree Of Life’ from the Book of Genesis. At the Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool in Weston, children are learning many of life’s lessons in a thriving, modern school. Speaking with Our Kids
R
aising children is, in many ways, the most rewarding thing an adult can do. It is frequently challenging and can even be a harrowing task. The events of the past two months haven’t made things any easier. Parents everywhere went from trying to explain why school was canceled and why you really need to wear a mask, to grappling with how to discuss the death of George Floyd with their kids. We found that the best thing to do is simply to start a conversation. Kids these days have incredible access to information. They are often better informed on trending topics than adults. What they frequently are missing, is context. Without understanding the past, it is impossible to comprehend why millions of people would take to the streets after the killing of a single man. We are not the right people to give advice on how to help kids grapple with the subject of systemic racism. Nor will we tell you what political remedies we favor. We will, however, encourage every parent to talk with their kids. And, to listen to their perspective. The isolation forced on us by the pandemic has given every parent an opportunity to speak with their kids. We don’t plan on missing it. Sincerely,
Christy & Terry Jaillet

Calvary Christian Academy Valedictorian Fosters an Ability to Help Others BY TERRY JAILLET
P
lantation resident Kaitlyn Tully has a list of accomplishments that would make a 40-year old envious. That is pretty impressive for someone who just finished High School. Her 4.55 GPA earned her valedictorian honors at Calvary Christian Academy and recognition as a National Merit Finalist. Her academic success, however, isn’t what sets her apart.
Kaitlyn saw a need for an afterschool tutoring program for foster and adopted children. Helping foster kids is something close to her heart. “My family has been fostering for the past five years, so I really have a heart for foster children,” Kaitlyn remarked, “I wanted to help them with their schooling... especially the children who are falling behind due to changing schools frequently.”
Kaitlyn partnered with Calvary Chapel in Fort Lauderdale to start a free tutoring program for foster and adopted children. Foster children frequently change homes making schooling more difficult. This is especially true for kids with learning disabilities. Research suggests that early intervention can have a large impact on outcomes for kids falling behind. “I recruited other high schools to tutor for service hours,” said Kaitlyn, “They serve as mentors and tutors to these children.” Calvary Christian Academy held a drive-through commencement ceremony, making Kaitlyn’s commencement address delivery a bit unusual. Her message, however, was consistent with her work to help others. “When I think about the class of 2020, I see that our greatest legacy is love. We’re service-oriented, always ready to step out and help... Each of us leaves a mark on the world whether good or bad. What will ours be? I can’t wait to see
where God leads us.” Kaitlyn will attend Patrick Henry College in Virginia where she plans to study American Politics and Policy on a prelaw track. She hopes to practice family law in the future in order to fight for the rights of foster children. She enjoys reading, writing, calligraphy, and sewing. Her three younger siblings will surely miss her when she heads off to school next year.

Healthy Mothers of Broward BY TERRY JAILLET
T
here are guardian angels in Broward County. These angels are not the kind with wings. In fact, they are ordinary people like you and me. They are, however, looking out for the most helpless of us all: infants. These angles help disadvantaged pregnant women and new mothers through their pregnancies and the first year of their babies’ lives. Local charity Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County, has been helping up to 4,000 local families at a time for over 20 years. The 501(c)3’s mission is to reduce infant deaths by strengthening families through a comprehensive approach to prenatal care, parenting, education, and support services. About 1 of every 200 babies born in Broward County don’t make it to their first birthday. For minorities and economically disadvantaged groups, the data are even worse. Black babies are four times more likely to die in their first year of life than white babies. Poor mothers are less likely to seek and have access to prenatal care than wealthier mothers. Healthy Mothers focuses its work on the five Broward zip codes with the highest infant mortality rate. One of the organization’s signature programs, The Mahogany Project, provides intensive case management services to in-need mothers, including: ▸ Prenatal Support ▸ Childbirth Education ▸ Breastfeeding Education ▸ Nutrition Education ▸ Support Groups ▸ Individual Counseling ▸ Medical Case Management The organization is led by Executive Director, Linda Cichon, who started with the Healthy Mothers 23 years ago. “My involvement in this effort is personal. I had a baby that was stillborn. I stayed connected with a nurse that helped me through that moment in my life and began to volunteer. I guess, I never left.” Cichon also highlighted one of the group’s most successful programs, its Teen Leadership Council. The Teen Council is comprised of dedicated teen volunteers from many area high schools. The young people lead Healthy Mothers’ Grab N Go Lunch program. They have delivered more than 2,000 meals to in-need families during this unprecedented time. The students truly embrace their mantra of Saving Lives, Guiding Futures and Inspiring Hope. In addition to meals, mentorship and education, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies offers pregnant women and new moms classes on how to make healthier meals ,as well as ,supplying healthy produce to the families. It is a comfort to know that the families most in need are being watched over by guardian angels from Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies. To learn more or if you would like to volunteer or donate to Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County visit their website at www.hmhbbroward.org.

Raising the Standard of Care: Gadh Family Practice Goes Beyond CDC Guidelines to Keep Patients Safe
H
usband and wife primary care physicians, Dr. Ruchika Gadh and Dr. Rundeep Gadh opened their family medical practice in Plantation over ten years ago with the idea of providing patients with personalized attention and care. This driving thought has remained close to their hearts ever since. Unlike larger group practices or medical corporations, Dr. Gadhs’ philosophy is rooted in getting to know their patients and their families. The kind and efficient medical staff at Gadh Family Practice have been welcoming patients, 16 years and older, into their practice since opening. They accept all major insurance plans and offer all types of primary care. Unfortunately, the advent of COVID-19 has made some people scared to even step foot in a medical office. Dr. Gadh took this unfortunate, new reality as a challenge. He set out to create the safest, most sanitary medical office available for their patients. The practice implemented stringent infectious disease prevention policies and retrained staff to ensure everyone who walks through the door will have the peace of mind to know they are in the safest environment possible. We sat down with Dr. Gadh to learn more.
“We are raising the standard of care in order to protect our patients, especially the elderly and immunocompromised”
Tell us about some of the changes you’ve made as a result of COVID-19. I want to reduce the fear that patients have when they come to a medical office because they are concerned they will get sick. We are now sanitizing our office with commercial equipment and EPA certified sanitizing solution, every day! (This is in addition to disinfecting every patient room, after each patient which is something we have always done). The systems we are using are far beyond the CDC recommendations. This is state-of-the-art. We also have special partitions in the waiting rooms, temperature checks upon arrival, sick-visit screening before entering, and even sneeze-guards throughout the office. We put air filtration systems throughout the office and in each and every 16 JULY 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
patient room. This seems like it goes beyond, even COVID. Exactly. I do not know of any other practice implementing these aggressive measures. We are raising the standard of care in order to protect our patients to the best of our ability, especially the elderly and immunocompromised. Doctors’ offices should have been doing these things years ago in order to reduce the spread of viruses like the flu. It’s still not being done, it’s not the standard of care, but we are looking to be the pioneers to raise the standard of care. What types of care do you offer? We offer all types of primary care. Everything from physicals, diabetes, to managing hypertension, to allergy testing, and more. It sounds like you put a lot of thought into your “new normal” approach, and at great expense. Why did you take this approach? We take great pride in our patient care. In order to keep our patients safe and healthy, Gadh Family Practice has learned, adapted, and evolved for the “new normal.” We have always given our patients all the attention they need, we now exceed the standard of care.
Assuming we get a vaccine for COVID, will this change your new approach? We have made a commitment to maintaining these higher standards for infectious disease control in the future. Simply stated, our goal is to ensure patients come to our office to get well, not sick. n Gadh Family Practice provides primary medical care to patients 16 years old and older. They are located at 600 S. Pine Island Road, Suite 104. To schedule an appointment or to learn more call 954-474-4401 or visit www.gadhfamilypractice.com.

Summer of STEAM: Take the “MODS Challenge” All Summer Long
T
hanks to a partnership between the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) and Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), students across the District can continue to use their critical thinking skills and creativity to tackle an array of unique FREE STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) learning activities all summer long. MODS developed eight weeks of fun, innovative and STEAM project-based learning units with multiple science activities students can do at home and share on social media. The slate of activities that comprises the MODS Challenge was part of the District’s transition to distance learning due to the coronavirus pandemic and aimed to engage students with hands-on learning opportunities. The MODS Challenge offers a STEAM curriculum aligned with core educational standards. Through the challenges, students also have access to some of the IMAX® films in MODS’ extensive library of documentaries. All
MODS Challenge modules are available for students to access for free all summer long. Parents and students can pick the theme(s) in which they are interested in learning. Over the final week of the school year, MODS launched, the science behind hurricanes and climate. This final challenge was particularly timely as the start of hurricane season began June 1st. The virtual Eye of the Storm series was a collaboration of MODS, Florida International University’s (FIU) International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC) and was sponsored by the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) and IHRC. “As an epicenter for STEM in South Florida and a longstanding educational partner of the District, we were excited to engineer a project-based weekly curriculum that connects students to inspiring and relevant science,” said Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of MODS. “Through the MODS Challenges, we are engag-
ing students with unique learning opportunities to spark their imaginations and develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills – all while having fun,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “We appreciate the ongoing collaboration with the Museum of Discovery and Science in providing these challenges. It’s an example of the positive impact we can have on our students by working together through community partnerships.” The MODS Challenges are accessible by BCPS students via Canvas and on the MODS website, mods. org/modschallenge. MODS Challenge themes include: ▸ Environment and Nature ▸ Engineering ▸ Physical Science ▸ Ecosystems ▸ Health and Wellness ▸ Space ▸ Animals ▸ Eye of the Storm: Hurricanes and Climates Students can share their projects with MODS and BCPS through Twitter using @browardschools and @modsftl with #MODSChallenge. Special thanks to Wells Fargo and Ultimate Software for sponsoring the MODS Challenge.

eal Estate can be uncharted waters for some. In these uncertain times, people need someone with experience and integrity to lean on more than ever. Buyers and sellers need a trusted expert to guide them through the complicated world of Real Estate. Zona Horton has over 36 years of experience along with hundreds of successful transactions. She has represented buyers and sellers throughout South Florida and is an expert in Davie, Cooper City, and the surrounding areas. She prides herself on getting sellers the highest prices possible for their homes, and in the shortest amount of time. Zona is well-known in the area for her “pricing to sell” skills, where many agents fall short. Her listings seem to “fly off the shelf” and close – because, without the right pricing and the right exposure, properties become stagnant on the market. Overpricing is no benefit to either sellers or buyers. Some agents give clients overly optimistic pricing in order to get the listing, only to reduce the price, again and again. Zona knows where the “sweet spot” is and will price that way from the get-go. Pricing it right from the beginning could result in a higher sales price. Zona saves the seller time and money. Her listings sell within dollars of the appraised value because of her pricing skills. Zona works closely with a team of experts at Keller Williams Realty. Together, they provide the highest quality service in every aspect of a real estate transaction. Keller Williams leads the industry in innovation, digital marketing, research, and client education. Zona’s goal is to be her client’s go-to resource for all things real estate. We sat down with Zona Horton to learn more about her real estate business. What is the secret to your success? This is a full-time career for me. I want my clients to always count on me. I am available to work with buyers and sellers seven days a week. I constantly stay on top of all of the facts and
market trends. What is your philosophy? Clients come first. I want them to lean on me and my experience. I pledge to be in constant communication with the truth of the situation, keeping them fully informed throughout the entire buying or selling process. If they are not left with an amazing experience, I haven’t done my job. The satisfaction of my clients is how I measure success, not through achievements or awards. How do you know the South Florida market so well? I am a native South Floridian, so I know South Florida Real Estate inside and out. I remember when interested rates were 18% and we could not give away a condominium. It has been an interesting journey working the unpredictable, yet remarkable, South Florida market. I have lived in Southwest Ranches and eventually moved to Cooper City. My stomping ground includes Davie. Therefore, I am well acquainted with these areas in particular. What areas are your focus? I have sold and resold Broward County - Cooper City, Weston, Davie, Southwest Ranches, East Fort Lauderdale, and Coral Springs - to name a few. With over 36 years of experience and hundreds of successful transactions, I have represented buyers and sellers in every market in the area How do you help clients with buying or selling a home? I understand that buying or selling a home is more than just a transaction: it’s a life-changing experience. That’s why my team of highly-seasoned real estate professionals, mortgage brokers, and closing agents is dedicated to providing exceptional, personalized service for all of our clients. I take great pride in the relationships I build and I work relentlessly on my clients’ behalf. What advice do you have for someone selling his/her home? Selling your home isn’t about the three P’s: Put in MLS, Plop a sign in the yard, and Pray. Selling your home is about: Preparation. To ensure you get the best offer in the shortest time, there are a few things you can do. First, make
Integrity Matter . . . Things Real Estate”
“I understand that buying or selling a home is more than just a transaction: it’s a life-changing experience.” repairs to the interior and exterior. Just because you’ve gotten used to the cracks in the walls doesn’t mean a buyer will, too. Next, neutralize colors, to appeal to all prospective buyers’ tastes. Buyers need to see themselves in your home. Once your house is fresh and appealing, stage your home. Home stagers can add small details and décor touches that allow the buyer to see the potential in all the spaces of your home. Do you have any home-buying tips? I like to guide homebuyers through the process and offer many tips along the way. These are my top five: Get finances in order. Find a house you can afford. Hire a professional. Do your homework. Think long term. How do you help sellers set their price? Every seller wants to maximize the net proceeds when selling his/her home, which is why it is important to list the house at a fair price and not overprice. Many homeowners think that pricing their home a little OVER market value will leave room for negotiation. In most cases, my colleagues will use your home to
sell the one down the street that is priced at market. Instead of trying to “win” a negotiation with one buyer, I recommend pricing to maximize demand for the home. By doing this, the seller will not be fighting with a buyer over the price. Instead, the seller will have multiple buyers fighting with each other over the house. Is the MLS listing always accurate? Whether there is a room that was “stated” as a bedroom in the MLS to a spa that was tagged as a swimming pool, I can assess what you are purchasing and create a market analysis based on the truth of what you have seen and are considering to purchase. I can quickly assess whether the MLS printout is in line with the actual product being presented and point out the “not so obvious.” How has the pandemic impacted the real estate market? No one can time the market. From 2005 through 2012, many homeowners walked away from their homes after drowning in their predatory loans. These “walk-away” homeowners
realized the equity they walked away from and are not ready to re-enter the Real Estate market. Regardless, buyers need to “jump in” – even if it means not getting everything on their “wish lists.” Build the equity, sell, then move on up! There may be an increase in inventory in 2020 because of job loss and homeowners desiring to move away from large cities. However, we have been short on inventory which means we have been in a seller’s market for some time – especially in the single-family home arena. 2020 may bring back a more balanced market for single-family homes. There may be an uptick of condominium sales as those homeowners do not want to be held captive by their associations should another event (such as COVID-19) occur. Since COVID-19, prices have NOT drastically dropped. There has been a slowdown because showings can only be done virtually, and we are taking all precautions to keep our buyers and sellers safe. As soon as we see a slowdown in the number of
cases of this virus, the showings will return to a new “normal” even if that means donning gloves, masks, and face shields. What does Keller Williams Realty bring to the table? Keller Williams Realty offers agents extensive education and marketing programs. It is a leader in National and International marketing, promoting their agents and our listings across the globe. There is also a camaraderie among the agents who work there. We like to promote and sell company listings in the spirit of cooperation. However, we want to expose our buyers to all listings that meet their criterial. Do you offer a free analysis to determine the worth of someone’s home? Yes. n Zona Horton has been successfully selling Real Estate in South Florida for over 36 years. She works for the international Keller Williams family of companies and serves Davie, Cooper City and surrounding areas. Call her for all your Real Estate needs. For information, visit www. “Drive-In” Graduation Gives Calvary Christian Academy Seniors A Safe Memorable Experience
C
alvary Christian Academy (CCA) seniors drove to school one last time the evening of Friday, May 22 for a “drive-in” graduation experience that marked the end of their high school journey. Each senior student had the opportunity to walk across an outdoor stage and have their moment of recognition while maintaining social distancing protocol.
The Class of 2020 and their closest family members and friends parked their cars on a large grass field to experience the live ceremony. To hear and see the program, they tuned into an FM frequency on their car radios and turned their heads toward the large screens on each side of the stage. CCA seniors were parked closer to the stage. When it was their turn to walk across it for the conferral of diplomas, they were chauffeured to the stage, exited their vehicle, walked across the stage when their name was called, had their picture taken, and re-entered their vehicle to return back to their parking spot.
24 JULY 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
“We wanted to give our seniors the most authentic, safe, and memorable graduation experience possible considering the circumstances,” said CCA’s Head of School, Dr. Jason Rachels. “This is an exceptional class that deserved an exceptional send-off.” CCA’s Class of 2020 was accepted to more than 50 colleges and universities throughout the country, earned more than $2 million in scholarships, completed more than 41,000 community service hours, and included three National Merit Finalists, four Miami Herald Silver Knight nominees, 21 AP Scholars, 12 committed collegiate athletes, four international students, as well as one United States Air Force Academy Cadet. The valedictorian and salutatorian had the opportunity to address their peers in person from the stage’s podium. “I didn’t think I’d be able to share my speech from a live stage with everything going on,” said Kaitlyn Tully, CCA’s Class of 2020 valedictorian. “I was so surprised and excited when I found out that I would be able to experience a memory I was really looking forward to having.” The formal ceremony was followed by a car parade recessional. As the graduates and invited guests exited the school’s property honking the horns of their decorated vehicles, their faces beamed with joy. “There was no shortage of excitement and your traditional pomp and circumstance at this commencement ceremony,” said Aaron Mills, CCA’s high school principal. “The creativity and collaboration of our dedicated faculty and staff at CCA and our parent church, Calvary Chapel Fort Lauderdale, made all of the event logistics a successful reality. We’re delighted to have received such positive feedback from our graduates and their families. They not only felt loved, but also sensed God’s presence throughout the event. We ultimately thank Him for giving us great weather and allowing this in-person graduation experience to happen. It will be one for the history books, that’s for sure,” Mills said. Event plans were designed in accordance with City of Fort Lauderdale social distancing guidelines.

“I Love a Parade”- The Hopkins Team Celebrates Scholarship Winners BY: TERRY JAILLET
W
ho wants a recognition reception, when you can have a whole parade! The winners of the 2020 Hopkins Team Homes Scholarships were honored by Mayor Lynn Stoner, the Plantation Police Department, the Plantation Fire Department plus a large procession of cars carrying Hopkins Team members and their families. Eight worthy graduates received the scholarships, which are endowed by local realtors Dondi & Dianna Hopkins. Each fall, a group of graduating seniors is selected by an eight-person committee consisting of education and community leaders. The committee places an emphasis on the students’ leadership skills and experience rather than test scores or GPA. This year’s recipients included four boys and four girls, who will further their educations across a wide spectrum of fields including business, sports management, technical theater, and chemistry. The scholarships are made possible by the generosity of Dondi and Dianna Hopkins, along with their entire Hopkins Team at Compass Realty. This is the seventh year the real estate group has sponsored the program. “We are honored to recognize such deserving graduates! We can’t wait to see what they will achieve in the future,” said Dondi Hopkins. This year’s winners included Nova High School graduates Daniel Kwak, Hannah Qunital and Juan Scheele, South Plantation High School’s Baylie Henschel, Kierstin Rose, and Chase Dietrich, Ally Samper from College Academy High School and Brandon Hyppolite, who graduated from Western. To apply for the scholarship, graduating high school seniors must submit a 500-word essay addressing the topic: “What it takes to be a great leader and why it’s important to you.” Rising seniors should contact their school’s guidance office to learn how to submit an application for the class of 2021.

Fewer than 8,000 of the Semifinalists go on to win scholarships. The winners are selected on a state-by-state basis and are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. NMSC winners receive a $2,500 scholarship and the honor of being a Nation Merit Scholar. THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.
Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation
During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

Bunions: What You Should Know BY MICHAEL M. COHEN, DPM, FACFAS
bunions. A foot and ankle specialist may encounter bunions in young patients, even in adolescents. Shoes do not cause bunions but can make the deformity develop much faster. This is particularly noted if one is used to wearing shoes with a narrow toe box or pointed high heeled shoes. Not all bunions are the same and some may be more severe than others. In long-standing deformities, arthritis may have developed in the joint and rare instances, bunions may be related to an inflammatory arthritic problem such as Rheumatoid Arthritis. Conservative treatment is focused on making the patient more comfortable. This includes wearing wider shoes, activity modification, icing, anti-inflammatories, padding and orthotics. A bunion splint may sometimes be dispensed to children and milder forms of bunions, but its effectiveness has not been proven. Infrequently, injections may be used to treat a bursitis which can form around the joint. Surgery is a valid option if conservative treatment fails. It is estimated that over 209,000 people undergo bunion surgery in the United States per year. A large randomized control trial published in the Journal of the American Medical Association unions, otherwise known as Hallux Valgus, (May 16, 2001) indicated that in the long run patients who had surgery experienced are a common foot deformity with many misconceptions. Most people suffer years of better outcomes than a control group that pain prior to seeking treatment. It affects a third of was treated conservatively with or without orthotics (watchful waiting). BY: FERNANDA PEDROSO arenting Plans are the agreement that parents enter into either during a dissolution of marriage involving minor children or during a paternity action where the parents share a child or children in common. The goal of this agreement is to provide both parents and more importantly—the child—clarity as to when the child will be spending time with each parent. In order for a Parenting Plan to truly assist families with their co-parenting, this document should be very specific and address all children-related topics with as much detail as possible. Ambiguities can and often do lead to issues and disagreement between parents, resulting in the need to submit the matter to court. However, sometimes even if these documents are properly drafted and specific, one parent may still fail to comply with his or her responsibilities as stated within the parenting plan. One example of this non-compliance is related to the timesharing and/or holiday schedule—wherein one parent is not exercising the time he/she agreed to exercise; or alternatively, one parent is taking more time than they are entitled to. If you find yourself in the situation where one parent is not fulfilling their portion of the timesharing schedule, this would constitute, a substantial change in circumstances, since the time of the entry of the Final Judgment thereby entitling you to seek a modification in order for the agreement to illustrate the timesharing schedule actually being exercised by both parents. The filing of a modification will open the door for other child-related issues to be re-addressed, if necessary. Therefore, it is important you consider whether you truly want to proceed down this route. Consequently, a modification in timesharing may also impact the child support obligation as that obligation is, in part, impacted by the percentage of timesharing each parent is exercising. If on the other hand, you are in a situation where one parent is constantly interfering with your timesharing such as keeping the minor child extra time or failing to execute drop-offs on time, you are entitled to seek an enforcement of your agreement. This is done by filing a Motion for Contempt and Enforcement. You may also request that the non-compliant parent be responsible for your attorney’s fees and costs related to the filing of this motion, since absent their actions, there would likely be no need to address this matter in court. Ultimately, it is always best that parents attempt to remain civil and respect one another and the agreement they have entered. This is always beneficial for children as it limits their exposure to the negative effects and dynamics of litigation. However, when the non-compliance is such that it begins to disrupt the minor child and results in a willful disregard for the Parenting Plan established in the family case, it becomes necessary to address.

Estate Planning From The Comfort Of Your Own Home BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE
A
s an attorney who has practiced in the area of estate planning for many years, one of the biggest challenges has always been getting potential clients to accept the importance of completing their estate plans now, rather than adding it to the list of things they might eventually need to take care of. It’s human nature to believe that creating a will or trust is not something you might need. After all, you’re not old, or sick, so there’s plenty of time to take care of these things later. Seriously, who wants to think about what may happen after you die? Or that you may die. But proper estate planning is much more than a plan to distribute assets after you pass away. It includes planning for incapacity or extended illness. It should designate and empower someone to make financial and health care decisions for you, should you not be able to. It should designate who will care for and support your children, or continue your business after you are gone. For me, nothing will ever replace the energy I derive by meeting clients in person. But our current normal requires that attorneys take a new approach. So I, like other attorneys, have had had to adapt. I have been able to continue to provide estate planning advice and counsel via Zoom meetings. And although businesses are beginning to “open,” many clients are not yet comfortable meeting in person. Nor are we. So we are taking things slowly. While Zoom has allowed me to continue initial consultations, have planning meetings and present final documents, properly executing documents has remained a challenge. A testamentary document such as a will or trust must be executed in person before two witnesses and a notary. To accomplish this, our mobile notary has traveled to clients’ homes, maintaining proper social distancing and when requested to do so, witnessed document signings by looking through a window. But the legal requirement for executing these documents in person is changing. Effective July 1st, Florida wills and trusts can be signed, witnessed and notarized virtually. Notaries who are certified to perform RON (remote online notarization) can facilitate the virtual execution of testamentary documents from the comfort of your home. The notary can even provide the necessary witnesses. So, if you have do not have an estate plan or have one in need of updating, reach out to your attorney now. If you don’t have an attorney, find one. There are many qualified estate planning attorneys in the area and most offer complimentary initial consultations. Look for someone who has experience, competence, and compassion. And be sure they offer the option of virtual notarizations. The pandemic has changed our world and once again reminds us of the fragility of life. No matter what your age or health situation, now is the time to create an estate plan. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY he appalling murder of George Floyd reopened deep and painful wounds in our country. For too long, many people of color have suffered through a separate and unequal system of justice and have been unjust victims of police brutality. Incidents like this cut particularly deep with me. Before I was Broward’s first black sheriff, I was a black kid from the inner city thrown to the ground by a police officer with a knee pinned to the back of my neck. I understand the distrust some black and brown Americans feel toward law enforcement. We’ve let them down for far too long and have done too little to root out systemic racism from our ranks. But I Say This To You: Enough Is Enough. I know we must work hard to rebuild trust with our communities, but changes are being made. Since I became sheriff, I have worked to build public trust by bringing accountability and transparency to this agency and to this community. Our deputies are held accountable for their actions. On four different occasions, I’ve terminated deputies for use of excessive force. I’ve appointed new members to the Professional Standards Committee, which includes minority members from the community, to review internal disciplinary matters. In addition, I am establishing a Use of Force Review Board, the first ever in BSO’s history. Egregious use of force will not be tolerated under my leadership. We continue to ensure we are hiring the right people, including more minorities and women, and are providing them with the appropriate training. We are reintegrating a comprehensive Early Warning System to detect potential behaviors that may cause harm to the public. In addition, every deputy in our department continues to be trained in de-escalation techniques along with safe arrest methods. I am also allocating approximately $1 million to implement racial equity and implicit bias training programs. All Department of Law Enforcement deputies have body worn cameras and are required to activate them prior to any interaction with civilians. I also know one negative incident can erode years of trust. At BSO, community policing is not merely a buzzword. We are working side by side with our communities, listening to your concerns, and identifying problems and solutions for BSO involvement in the neighborhoods we serve. This is why our deputies now get out of their patrol cars and walk the neighborhoods they protect, interacting with residents, as part of our Park, Walk and Talk program. At BSO, we’re making significant changes, and we are one of the most accountable and transparent public safety agencies in the nation. Yet I know there is still work to be done. I challenge our communities not to let incidents like what happened in Minneapolis divide us. I pledge as sheriff to continue to work with our communities and hold ourselves to the highest standards of professionalism and accountability. While I am I’m deeply saddened by the death of George Floyd and others killed unjustly, know this: their deaths will not be forgotten. May their legacies live through our progress.
