Things are Reopening, But We Still Must Remain Vigilant

O

n March 27th, Broward County issued its Shelter-in-Place order, effectively closing restaurants, sporting venues, parks, stores, gyms, and virtually every other public gathering place around. We were encouraged to stay at home. And, for the most part, that is exactly what we all did. Businesses temporarily closed, play-dates were canceled, dentist visits postponed, in-person visits with grandparents were suspended and birthday parties were moved online. As a community, we should be proud. South Florida went from being seen as the next “hot spot,” for the Coronavirus, to an area where the outbreak was largely contained. This was no small feat for a region that welcomes so many visitors from all around the world. Now things are reopening. To protect our lives and the economy, each of us must continue to do some common sense things to make sure the virus stays in check. If you don’t feel well, stay at home. Continue to wash your hands several times a day and whenever you go out. Limit close interpersonal contact when possible. Routinely clean things people frequently touch like doorknobs, steering wheels, and countertops. And, if you must interact with multiple people or cannot physically distance yourself, please continue to wear a mask. If we are smart and responsible, we will be able to get a large part of our daily routines back while a vaccine is being developed. We owe it to ourselves, our children, and our loved ones to do what we can to prevent another shut-down. The hard part is over, now it’s time for us all to follow-through and kick COVID’s butt! Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

COMMUNITY NEWS

Broward County Public Schools Food & Nutrition Services Hits 1 Million Meals!

A

s everyone knows, Broward County Public Schools (BCPSFNS) have been closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This District, however, remains committed to serving the community by offering grab-and-go meals for breakfast

and lunch to children and their families. In an effort to reduce trips and safely maintain social distancing, meal distribution is available twice a week at select school locations where families can pick up multiple meals at once. The District is proud to announce that to date, it has served over 1 million meals to the community! This milestone showcases the dedication, sacrifice, and hard work of the BCPSFNS staff who work tirelessly to provide this needed service during this critical time. There are 25 elementary schools, 11 middle schools and 15 high schools distribution sites across Broward County.

Meal distribution takes place on Mondays and Wednesdays only from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. where children and their families can pick up multiple meals each. Children that are not present may still receive meals with valid identification. Meals are handed out in the bus or car loop as they either drive up or walk up to reduce the risk of exposure.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

Turning 18: Why You Need A Health Care Power Of Attorney BY: WENDY HILL ELDEIRY, ESQUIRE ELDEIRY & ELDEIRY, P.A. n your 18th birthday, you legally become an adult. This brings along all sorts of exciting privileges. You can vote! You can get a tattoo! You can buy cigarettes and lottery tickets! You can open your own credit card and sign contracts on loans, car payments, houses, and more. But there’s one aspect of becoming a legal adult that many people don’t think about until it is too late and they find themselves in a pickle. After you turn 18, your parents are no longer your legal guardians. That means that if you are injured in an accident and unable to give consent (i.e. unconscious), your parents will not be able to speak to your doctors about your condition, or in some cases even see you. HIPAA (the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) prevents doctors from sharing your medical information with anyone without your express permission.

O

Celebrating

Years of Service

Proud Weston Residents Since 1998

This is why, as soon as you turn 18, you need to set up a health care power of attorney, also sometimes referred to as a medical power of attorney. If you are a college student or young adult and would like your parents to be able to make decisions on your behalf if you are incapacitated, you need to make these legal arrangements as soon as possible. Every day that you go without them is a risk. If you are the parent of a young adult, you need to make sure that they are aware of the ways in which HIPAA would restrict you from helping them if they were injured. It is wise to have a conversation about why a health care power of attorney is necessary, and then offer to schedule them an appointment with an estate planning attorney to complete the paperwork. You cannot force your child to make you their health care power of attorney — as an adult it is their choice. You may hear some people or websites suggest that you can create your health care power of attorney alone, without the help of a lawyer. We highly recommend NOT following that advice, and not just because we’re estate planning attorneys! When it comes to a health care power of attorney, it is absolutely essential to get all the details right. If it is not completely accurate, as well as signed, witnessed, and notarized correctly, it will not be usable, and you probably won’t realize until it’s too late. If your child has turned 18, contact contact ElDeiry & ElDeiry, P.A. today. We’d be happy to help them take this step in becoming an adult with a plan. To schedule an appointment, just give us a call at (954) 670-2800, or email us today at Attorneys@ElDeiryLaw.com.

Managing Mental Health During COVID-19

Telemedicine Can Help BY NANCY EAGLETON any people are understandably feeling anxious and stressed during this COVID19 pandemic. It is valid to want to talk to someone, says Rachel Rohaidy, M.D., a psychiatrist with Baptist Health South Florida, and yet social distancing has created barriers to obtaining support from family, friends and coworkers. If left untreated, anxiety and depression can worsen and have long-term effects on your health. The good news is, mental health counseling is more accessible, convenient and affordable than ever before, thanks to telemedicine.

M

It’s Mental Health Awareness Month and this year’s campaign, You Are Not Alone, reminds people that now, more than ever, the mental health community is coming together to make connection possible during a climate of physical distancing.

The Corona Virus Pandemic is bringing out the best in us and Raisa is giving back to first responders by making and donating face masks. It is sad when you think about it that PPE which costs only 75 cents is such a scarce commodity causing those on the front line to risk their lives to save ours. Raisa has teamed up with a local business Beautiful Windows Blinds in Davie and in collaboration with their drapery department is making double-lined face masks. She has made several hundred to date and is shipping out to Floridabased healthcare facilities. Why? “Why Not” is the question Raisa urges us to ask. Raisa says life changed as we all know it. Spring Break was here and nothing was the same. The new “normal” of no school, no hanging out with friends, no going out, isolation and social distancing was unnerving. BCPS Congratulates VEX and FIRST Robotics Teams for Outstanding Seasons

B

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) congratulates the District’s VEX and FIRST Robotics school teams and coaches for their outstanding results during the 2019/20 school year. The following schools qualified for prestigious world championship competitions this year, prior to being canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. To qualify for the world championships, the school teams had to excel and win top honors during state and/or regional competitions. BCPS teams qualifying for VEX Robotics World Championships: Lloyd Estates Elementary School, Manatee Bay Elementary School, Silver Palms Elementary School, Eagle Ridge Elementary School, and Coral Springs Middle School BCPS teams qualifying for FIRST Robotics World Championships: Dillard High School, West Broward High School, and Cypress Bay High School In addition, Dillard High School teacher Steve Szoke and Dillard High alumnus Arefin Bari are being honored by FIRST Robotics as Regional Volunteers of the Year. They were selected due to their coaching and mentoring of the Dillard High SigmaC@ts FIRST Robotics team and hosting their annual off-season regional Mission Mayhem competition every fall.

About VEX and FIRST Robotics ▸  VEX Robotics provides tools to inspire the problem solvers of tomorrow through the use of education robotic solutions. Its goal is to create engaging, affordable and powerful solutions that immerse students in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) through the excitement of building and programming educational robotics kits. VEX Robotics competitions bring STEM skills to life by tasking teams of students with designing and building a robot to play against other teams in a game-based engineering challenge. Classroom STEM concepts are put to the test as students learn lifelong skills in teamwork, leadership, communications, and more. Tournaments are held year-round at the regional, state, and national levels and culminate at the VEX Robotics World Championship each April. ▸  FIRST Robotics combines the excitement of sports with the rigor of science and technology

to create the ultimate sport for the mind. Teams compete head-to-head on a special playing field with robots they have designed, built, and programmed. FIRST Robotics addresses inequities in STEM. Supported by generous donors, grants are awarded each year to schools and other community organizations throughout the United States and Canada that serve young people whose access to STEM education and enrichment might otherwise be limited. FEATURE STORY

How to Buy & Sell Real Estate in the New

N

BY TERRY JAILLET

Everyone involved in real estate has adapted to our new normal... We have embraced this virtual world, filled with Zoom Meetings, 3D tours and virtual showings.

obody knows Weston Real Estate like Rose and Dean Sklar. The couple have been helping South Floridians buy and sell homes for almost 20 years and have been Coldwell Banker’s top agents in Broward county for the past two. We sat down with Rose Sklar to learn how the Coronavirus epidemic has impacted real estate. You have been leaders in Weston Real Estate for over ten years. Tell us how the Coronavirus crisis has impacted the market. Our Weston community has been faring well in this crisis as we Floridians are used to hurricane preparation and hunkering down at home. The Weston market, in particular, is still experiencing closings and unique but effective showings using digital technology and a bit of creativity. Everyone involved in a real estate transaction has quickly adapted to our new normal. We use virtual meetings, Facetime, and WhatsApp video calls to properties for appraisals, inspections, and more. We even work with virtual notaries. Fortunately, our team has used these types of technologies for years, which put us in a perfect position to adapt to the current environment.

Technology is more important now than ever before in marketing a home. What technologies are you using to help buyers and sellers today? COVID-19 is an unprecedented situation. We immediately realized that

The Rose & Dean Sklar Real Estate Team

we needed to transition and use the many digital resources we already had and to add a few more to our platform. We have embraced this new virtual world, filled with Zoom Meetings, virtual showings, and continuously upgrade and expand our already-successful digital marketing. The Sklar Team incorporates 3D interactive tours and walkthrough video tours on many of our properties. These tours are available across our extensive website presence, social media channels, and in our constant contact newsletters. We provide Virtual Staging for vacant homes as well as Facebook Live to promote our listings anytime and anywhere. With Zoom listing appointments and virtual tours now the standard, is staging a home still important? We examine whether staging is needed or not on a case by case evaluation. Staging is always a wonderful enhancement that will speed up the time a property stays on the market. A buyer’s first impression is vital. Enhancing photos always gets more eyes on a property, and more internet hits. We currently use a lot of 3D tours to allow the buyer to walk through the property in real-time. We have the technology to add furniture virtually. This functionality is especially helpful in the current climate, where we cannot enter the home physically. Staging is still a big part of attracting buyers. It helps them continue to view and search for additional photos, as opposed to leaving and writing your home off their list. What advice do you give to current or potential homeowners who are concerned about uncertainty in the market? The current environment is a moment in time, almost like a snowstorm. We are in the storm, it will eventually melt, and we, as a world, will have to learn to live with the new normal. In challenging times like these, we must learn to adapt and to embrace technology. We will continue to focus on what benefits our clients. Those who leaned-in and found new and changing ways to sell in this new virtual world will be most successful during the recovery.

How do homeowners sell their homes in this environment? What should you do differently than before? Many of the rules remain the same: Prepare the home, declutter, paint, neutralize, and thoroughly clean. Check with your real estate professional on staging and re-vitalizing the property. Power price to sell, not to test the market. Most importantly, today, video and 3D tours are of utmost importance. These platforms get buyers inside the home in real-time. Many sales are made using only virtual photography, floor plans, and neighborhood videos. What about buying a home? Is this a good time to buy? Yes! Interest rates are at historic lows. Anyone who is still currently on the market and allowing showings is most likely motivated. Real estate is and will always be a safe investment long term. Brick and mortar will always be an excellent investment. Values may fluctuate, but historically always goes up. Today the stock market can be a scary place. The only commodity you can buy and personally enjoy is real estate. Tell me about virtual closings? Do you work with lenders and title companies with remote capabilities? All of our lenders, title companies and inspectors, have embraced technology and are getting deals closed. We utilize Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Blue Jeans, virtual or curbside notary, wires, CDC guidelines gloves, booties, and masks. We are all aligned as one virtual team to get the job done safely and efficiently. What is your prediction for real estate’s future? How will we be buying and selling homes in six months, 12 months or three years from now? Things are always changing. When I began my real estate career in the 1980s, we had to jump to computer accessibility with photos. Then came staging and renovations. Now, Virtual staging and open houses, zoom listings, and digital postcards are becoming standard. The future will be videography and virtual reality. We are optimistic that when we get back to our new normal pent up demand will be paramount. People have been stuck at home, feeling a lack of space and recognizing their unmet needs. Many will decide they want a bigger yard, home office, home gym, or a more walkable lifestyle.

Digital World – Rose & Dean Sklar All of the factors driving a strong Real Estate market remain the same today. Florida continues to have a preferential tax situation. Our weather and environment will continue to attract people. This is not a real estate led economic situation and all indicators suggest real estate will lead us out of it. We believe fall and winter will be very strong! What is The Sklar Team’s story? Dean and I arrived in South Florida in 2001. We discovered the secret sauce to building our business was good old fashioned hard work. Making connections, attending community events, and building relationships were critical. Embracing change and technology along the way has helped us achieve a stronghold in the Weston real estate market. Over the years, we began to see a trend of our buyer pool moving east, so we opened our new office on Las Olas Blvd in Fort Lauderdale. Our Team provides personal boutique-style service to our clients backed by the Global market Leader Coldwell Banker Realty. We are fortunate to be a family-run team. We have a wonderful combination of time-tested knowledge and experience backed up by our son, Cody, who brings a business degree from the University of Miami, contemporary marketing, information, style, and education to the team. All of our staff and associates are part of our extended family. We work together to bring results to our clients. How did The Sklar Team achieve back to back # 1 Rankings in all of Broward County for Coldwell Banker in 2018 & 2019? Our team is dedicated to customer service. We are a diverse group now, with two offices from East to West. “Eastmeetswest. info” is geared to the flow of buyers and sellers. We pay special attention to technology. We continue to expand our footprint, digitally and with boots on the ground. The Rose and Dean Sklar Team is focused on doing an excellent job for our clients. Repeat and referral clients is what drives our business. We are so proud that we are #1 but mostly, we are thankful for the confidence our clients have put in us. n The Rose & Dean Sklar Real Estate Team is part of Coldwell Banker Weston. Their office is at 2690 Weston Road, Suite 100. For more information call 954-298-3626, visit www.EastMeetsWest.info, or email Rose@ SklarTeam.com. OURCITYMEDIA.COM | OUR CITY | MAY/JUNE 2020 29

ASK THE EXPERT

Growing Pains in Children or Merely Flatfeet? BY DR. CARLO A. MESSINA

F

oot, ankle and leg problems in the growing child are often considered to be “Growing Pains” in the bone and muscles of the lower extremity. While in a small number of cases this might be true, in a majority of the cases the pains that plague these children and teenagers may be caused by lower extremity malalignment problems. Growing pains are often seen in children who are excessively flatfooted or whose feet point to the outside. Children may also appear very knock-kneed. Tight calf muscles can not only cause but significantly aggravate the pain that these children are experiencing, especially at night. Leg pain is most commonly seen, especially at night after a long day of activity. Pain with activities, especially along the inside of the knee, lower leg, ankle and foot, may also be seen. This is often associated with a general avoidance of activities and sports and premature fatigue with many activities. Many children can also develop lower back pain. Treatment is important early on. Changing a child’s shoe gear to add more support to the foot and ankle may provide immediate help. Avoiding barefoot and flat shoes is necessary. Custom molded orthotics (shoe inserts) will immediately help to realign the foot and the entire lower extremity. This will almost overnight eliminate the problem. Physical therapy may also help to decrease overall muscle tightness and to improve muscle strength and coordination. If the foot is flat and associated with tight calf muscles, stretching the calf muscles in a walking cast is critical to not only eliminate the problem but to prevent a recurrence. If the flatfoot deformity is severe,

there is a small percentage of children that will benefit from a procedure to realign and “correct” the flatfoot. An excellent prognosis is always seen when the cause is identified and the problem treated. n Carlo A. IT’S THEIR BUSINESS BY STACEY BOMSER

F

or many seniors, performing the most simple tasks can become a challenge and while they may need help with day to day activities, they may not want to live with their children or in an assisted living facility. For those individuals, Seniors Helping Seniors® is here to help. For the past six years, Seniors Helping Seniors has been pairing seniors in need with active seniors who can empathize and understand their needs. Seniors Helping Seniors Franchise Owner Diana Marrero Cabassi explains more about this unique service and how it may benefit you or your aging loved ones. What is Seniors Helping Seniors? We are a licensed agency that provides companionship care to seniors who need a little bit of help to stay home independently. What differentiates your business from other caregiver agencies? The quality of our caregivers and the fact that we are the only agency that, for the most part, employs active seniors as caregivers. This peer-to-peer approach is based on the idea that the best person to care for a senior is someone who can understand and relate to their needs. What do you look for when pairing caregivers with seniors needing help? We match people based on common interests. We employ people that are genuinely interested in helping others, who are caring and compassionate, and can relate to the people they are caring for. We like to say that it’s “Like getting a little help from your friends®”. Who is your typical client? Seniors who need help around the house and/or companionship.

We help seniors live safely in their own homes! People are living longer but not necessarily healthier lives. Additionally, loneliness affects many seniors and our service provides friendship to those who may be feeling a bit isolated or depressed. Who are your typical caregivers? Although our caregivers are unique in their own way, they are all loving, caring and compassionate individuals who understand the needs of the seniors they are assisting. Their backgrounds are as diverse as the people they are caring for. We look for people who have a volunteer heart that don’t mind getting paid for their services. What do you do to ensure the safety and security of your clients? I personally interview all potential caregivers and check their references. In addition, everyone is required to undergo a Level 2 FBI background screening, which is done at the national level. What services does Seniors Helping Seniors provide? Our caregivers can help with anything

from preparing meals to providing a ride to the doctor. We can assist with light housekeeping, doing the laundry, going to the grocery store or running other errands; we can even help in caring for their pets. In addition, we assist with assuring safety and fall prevention, medication reminders, memory loss support, relief for family members, overnight supervision and 24-hour care. In other words, we provide assistance when needed offering as much or as little support as the client needs. How did Seniors Helping Seniors start? Seniors Helping Seniors was founded over 20 years ago by Kiran and Philip Yocom. It was initially a non-profit organization that provided relief to members of their community in Pennsylvania. Prior to starting the company, Kiran had worked in India with Mother Teresa. I joined Seniors Helping Seniors after moving to Florida to help care for my mother when she was diagnosed with dementia. After learning how Seniors Helping

Seniors placed such a high priority on helping seniors maintain their independence and dignity, I decided to open a local office and I’m very fortunate that we have been providing service in the area since 2014! Please tell us more about the personalized service you provide. For the people who help in the Seniors Helping Seniors community, this is not just a job, and you are not just a client. We’re interested in who you are, what you need, and what you, in turn, can share with us. Our main goal is to provide loving, compassionate care. The most important thing for me is that seniors, who often are ignored and disrespected, are treated with dignity and given the respect they deserve. Anything else you would like to add? Our rates are very competitive, and we can tailor a plan of care to help seniors stay safely at home, within any budget. I encourage you to call and schedule a free in-home consultation.

Five Fun Games to Keep You and Your Family Active and Entertained

K

eeping your family happy, active, and entertained is a hard task in this day and age. With technology and screens as most kids’ go-to entertainment, parents need a fresh and entertaining way to keep their kids outdoors and active. Our City Media has gathered five of our favorite outdoor games to share with you.

1. Rollors- Offers family fun for all ages. Kids spend hours outdoors perfecting their game. The game is like a combination of Bocce Ball and Horseshoes. Each player has a chance to show off their skill as they roll wooden discs to the opposing goal post. Points are awarded based on where and how the discs land. Each game comes packaged in a handy carrying case, making it easy to bring to the park or the beach. www.rollors.com MSRP $49.95

2. CROSSNET - Have you ever imagined combining two of your favorite childhood games? Crossnet does just that! Four square merges with volleyball for an entirely new game! Our families loved the competition. Crossnet can be played indoors or out and takes just minutes to set up on grass, sand, or a gym floor! Adjustable heights make it great for all ages! available on www. crossnetgame.com MSRP $149.99 36 MAY/JUNE 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

3. Corn Hole- If you grew up in the South, then you have probably played a game or two of Corn Hole. The picnic, poolside, and tailgating classic is loved by millions. Players take turns throwing 16-ounce bags of corn kernels at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. The platforms are frequently decorated in a family’s favorite team or college colors. We got ours at www.allamericantailgate.com unfinished and we customized it to our liking (another fun family project). NCAA regulationsized boards retail from $110 to $250 depending on how fancy you want it. 4. Spike Ball- Some say that if volleyball and foursquare had a baby it’d be named Spikeball. Spikeball is our family’s goto for lawn and beach fun. It is so popular, that there are now 100s of “round net” tournaments worldwide. www.spikeball.com Kits start at $59.99 5. Wiffle Ballmay be America’s original backyard pastime. Similar to baseball/softball this classic game is great for small groups, yards of almost any size or shape, and a whole bunch of trash talk. A bat and ball combo can be purchased for under $5.00 making this fun family game a steal. www.wiffle.com Starting at $5

Miami Dolphin’s WR Albert Wilson and His Foundation Raise Funds,Food and Critical Life Needs to Support Broward County Children in Foster Care

T

he Albert Wilson Foundation, founded by Miami Dolphins wide receiver Albert Wilson to enrich the lives of children in foster care, today announced its ongoing efforts and campaign to support HANDY (Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth) with crisis relief during the COVID-19 pandemic. The 10-week campaign, which began on March 30, will run through June 7, 2020. At the halfway point of the campaign, through its fundraising efforts, The Albert Wilson Foundation has provided HANDY youth and its caretakers with 550 meals, job opportunities and raised more than $10,000 to directly benefit HANDY youth and families. While this is a difficult time for everyone, the hardship for those in foster and relative/nonrelative care associated with the child dependency system, are especially severe. During the past month, 75% of HANDY youth and their caretakers have lost their jobs. Many of these families were already living

paycheck-to-paycheck and were teetering on the edge of homeless prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, these families have no idea how to pay for life essentials such as rent and food. “COVID-19 has caused an unprecedented and unmeasurable amount of hardship and loss throughout the world. As we enter May, which is National Foster Care Awareness month, The Albert Wilson Foundation hopes to shine a light on the often overlooked foster community and will continue to do its part to provide relief and support during these trying times,” said Jamaal May, Executive Director of The Albert Wilson Foundation. “It is our privilege to support and work in conjunction with HANDY and its great organization during this pandemic.” The Albert Wilson Foundation has received substantial cash donations from the Miami Dolphins organization, Jägermeister USA on behalf of YesJulz’s Little Rascals Foundation and Broward County Clerk of Courts, which will go directly towards The Albert Wilson Foundation campaign that benefits HANDY. Additionally, through The Albert Wilson Foundation, Fit Fixins, a healthy food and lifestyle meal prep business based in Port St. Lucie, has generously donated 300 meals to HANDY families, a value of more than $3,000. Also, the Phoenix Organization, which is a franchisee that owns and operates more than 31 Burger King’s, Taco Bell’s, and Denny’s in Broward County has donated 250 value meals and extended special consideration for employment opportunities for HANDY

youth over the age of 16 and their caretakers. ESPN Radio West Palm Beach 106.3 FM is also running donated, promotional spots twice daily through the end of the campaign to help raise awareness. To make a tax-exempt donation to The Albert Wilson Foundation, visit: https://albertwilsonfoundation.org/donation/. All donations received through Sunday, June 7, will directly benefit HANDY South Florida. About The Albert Wilson Foundation The Albert Wilson Foundation is a charity founded by Miami Dolphins WR Albert Wilson to enrich the lives of children in foster care. The Albert Wilson Foundation strives to change the destiny of foster children and break the cycle of abuse, neglect, and abandonment. It works to support youth during their transition in and out of foster care. Its goal is to provide scholarships to those wishing to continue their education outside the state of Florida, in addition to rewarding youth who continue to excel in the classroom and extracurriculars, despite all obstacles and circumstances. For more information visit http:// www.albertwilsonfoundation.org. About HANDY HANDY, which stands for Helping Abused Neglected Disadvantaged Youth, is an award-winning 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization. Founded in 1985, HANDY has met the needs of more than 45,000 Broward County children in foster and relative/nonrelative care associated with the child dependency system. HANDY’s mission is to achieve positive, lasting change for youth by providing life skills, education and a supportive community. HANDY strives to provide customized programs that meet the individual needs of a child that take them from early childhood to adulthood. For more information visit https:// handyinc.org. BCPS Advances Mental Health Counseling, Using Telehealth During Quarantine

B

eyond academics, BCPS continues to advance mental health counseling, using telehealth, to reach students during quarantine As new stressors and more anxiety become commonplace, the mental health team works to remain connected with clients and each other during COVID-19 pandemic For the mental health counselors of Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), the current quarantine and pandemic response has made their jobs more challenging and more important than ever. With nearly 270,000 students and 34,000 staff conducting class and working from home, the BCPS Mental Health Leadership Team is managing a staff of 240, as they deal with providing services using technology, staying connected with students who traditionally received support on-site, and anticipating new stressors born of COVID-19. Some of those stressors include feelings of isolation, loneliness, tedium/monotony and separation from their teachers and school environments. Laurel Thompson, PhD, director of Student Services Department, said the importance of maintaining wellness therapy is paramount for not only students and staff, but also for counselors, who risk burn-out attempting to help everyone cope. Thompson has served as director for more than 30 years. “We meet consistently, as a team, to provide

40 MAY/JUNE 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

encouragement and direction, counselor to counselor. I assure them their excellent skills, as therapists, will translate to the telehealth setting, as they still have their keen assessment expertise, knowledge of their clients and have incredible rapport-building abilities,” Thompson said. Given that individuals are responding to the COVID-19 pandemic differently, Thompson recommends that BCPS counselors conduct an ongoing, in-depth assessment of needs for each case to avoid assumptions. “Lastly, I would encourage awareness of current limitations in telehealth therapy, such as lack of physical touch and body cues, and how this may affect clients and impact the clinician-client relationship,” she said. “But more importantly, I would encourage thinking outside-the-box to not only find ways to engage with students, but also to encourage students to utilize their imagination and increase their creativity.” In addition to counseling services, BCPS has numerous in-school programs in place to empower students to strengthen their own mental health, such as the Broward STOPS Violence curriculum. But the pandemic response has introduced new, unanticipated stressors that the team is managing, according to Marisa Kinney, LCSW, supervisor of School Social Work Services. “From the moment schools closed, my primary

concern was for those students who depend heavily on the support of their peers and the safety net that schools provide for students who may not feel safe at home. Where do they turn? How do they cope? These students often use sports, school clubs, talking to their teachers, and going to a friend’s house, as positive outlets for unhealthy home environments,” Kinney said. “I am concerned about students that relied on the support and ‘checking in’ with support staff at their school, school counselors, school social workers, family therapists. Students struggling with home life or mental health issues often wake up feeling down and depressed and walk through the doors already having a bad day. Simply stopping by to see a friendly supportive face, makes all the difference in the world,” she said. To assist them with creating their own spaces of calm and wellness, the Mental Health Leadership team encourages students, parents, and staff to use BCPS’s Mindfulness Initiative. Powered via the primary cloud-based learning system, Canvas, the Mindfulness Initiatives enables users to engage in both live and pre-recorded activities, which include meditation and yoga. There are several modules and a calendar of events of varying duration geared towards certain age groups. https://browardschools. instructure.com/courses/868545

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

South Plantation High School Theater Teacher Named Barnes & Noble 2020 Teacher of the Year

C

ongratulations to Jason Zembuch-Young, drama and theater teacher at South Plantation High School, for being named winner of the Barnes & Noble 2020 Teacher of the Year award. Zembuch-Young was nominated by his former student Chase Dietrich, whose entry into the Barnes & Nobile My Favorite Teacher contest was chosen from thousands of entries nationwide. In February, Barnes & Noble invited students to nominate their favorite teacher by writing essays, poems, or thank-you letters that shared how their teacher influenced them. Entries were judged on the compelling nature of the teacher’s qualities, the sincerity of the student’s appreciation and the quality of expression and writing. As this year’s winner, Zembuch-Young, received a $5,000 award and another $5,000 to share with South Plantation High School. “The Barnes & Noble My Favorite Teacher contest provides an opportunity to hear from students around the country about the teachers who changed their lives and reward an exemplary teacher and school for his or her work,” said Tracy Vidakovich, vice president, Business Development for Barnes & Noble. “This year, we

are pleased to award the My Favorite Teacher award to Mr. Jason Zembuch-Young, whose commitment to his students through theater and the arts is reflected in Chase Dietrich’s inspiring essay.” In his essay, Chase praised Zembuch-Young for including all students at the school through

his theater program by performing all productions in American Sign Language. “Mr. Zembuch-Young not only taught me about the arts, which I will be pursuing in college but also how to speak up and champion for those less fortunate,” wrote Chase. “I became a teacher because I wanted to give young people something I desperately needed when I was their age – an advocate who always sees potential for more, regardless of one’s situation, and pushes others to become their better selves,” said Zembuch-Young. “The fact that Chase sees me as someone who has done that for him means more to me than anything. Thank you, Chase, for allowing me to be such an integral part of your life, and thank you, Barnes & Noble, for making sure that educators feel valued.”

Family Law During A Pandemic BY EVAN H. BARON, ESQ. e are all feeling the effects of the Pandemic. Whether it be from health issues for you or your family or friends or financial issues which seem to be impacting almost everyone. Those of us involved in family law understand that there are additional issues which many individuals may be dealing with. Everyone should be aware that although the Courts are closed for live, in-person hearings; the Family division is actually fully operational. Hearings are taking place daily, either by way of telephone conferencing, if it is a simple non-evidentiary matter, or by way of Zoom teleconferencing. Judges, attorneys, and participants will simply sign on with a previously e-mailed ID number and the hearing will proceed. It has actually been highly successful and has helped the Courts avoid a possible “log jam” of cases when the courthouse eventually re-opens. Mediations are also being conducted via teleconferencing. Although my office is closed and I am not meeting with people face to face, I am speaking with clients through phone calls or zoom meetings. My staff is also working remotely, and we have been able to help our clients with all of their issues. What are the issues that the family courts have been dealing with because of the closing of businesses and the “stay at home” orders? As you might expect, many individuals who have been either furloughed or terminated from their employment may have an existing alimony or child support obligation. It may be a short term loss of income or something more long term. Abatements (short term) or modifications (long term) may be able to be filed to seek relief. If the party is to receive either alimony or child support, but the payments have stopped; there may be pleadings that can be filed on that party’s behalf as well. Unfortunately, often times when individuals are regularly staying at home with their spouse or significant other, there is a rise in domestic violence cases. The Courts’ domestic violence courts are operating, and an individual who is a victim of domestic violence as defined by Florida Statutes can apply for an Injunction (restraining order). Although it would perhaps seem that during this exceedingly difficult time individuals would try and pull together, the reality is that relationships that have been somewhat ‘shaky” often fall apart under the stress of it all. Dissolutions of marriage can be filed if either or both parties feel it is best to end the relationship. Of course, it would be exceedingly difficult and emotionally challenging to engage in a highly contested case, while living under the same roof. To avoid possible confrontations and keep peace in the home, we have been recommending the Collaborative process which can be accomplished through teleconferencing. This process allows couples to work as a team, along with their attorneys; a mental health and a financial expert; with the goal to reach an agreement through negotiation and not litigation.

ASK THE EXPERT

Moms, Give Yourself a Gift BY CHARLES A. MESSA, III, M.D., F.A.C.S.

M

orning sickness. weight gain. skin changes. Pregnancy takes its toll on your body, especially your breasts and abdominal areas. On average, most women gain 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy. This weight is stored as fatty tissue in the breasts, abdomen, flanks (love-handles), hips, buttocks, and thighs. The growing abdomen may result in a weakening and separation of the abdominal muscles, and stretching of the abdominal skin. This stretching may cause a breakage of the skin collagen, causing stretch marks. Most new moms eventually lose the excess weight. Unfortunately, the weight loss is not proportional to the amount of fatty tissue in a given area. That means more weight may be lost from the breasts or buttocks than the abdomen and waist. The result—smaller breasts despite fullness of the waist and abdomen. Once a woman finishes breastfeeding, the breasts can deflate even further and begin to sag. The weak abdominal muscles and the excess abdominal fat appear as fullness and bulging of the belly. Many new moms may still look pregnant even as their child is taking his or her first steps. Once again, a mommy makeover can help. A mommy makeover is performed using a unique combination of plastic surgery procedures designed to counteract the physical effects of childbearing and restore and enhance your body. In general, a mommy makeover may include: ▸  Breast augmentation ▸  Breast lift ▸  Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) ▸  Butt lift ▸  Liposuction For example, some women need breast augmentation to correct severely deflated breasts, while others may need breast implants in combination with a breast lift. In the abdominal area, many women need a full abdominoplasty with tightening of the muscle layer as well as the removal of excess skin and fat. Some women may also benefit from liposuction to sculpt the back, hips, and thighs, and smooth out their contours. Finally, an increasing number of women have also been requesting a buttock lift and other buttock-enhancing options such as the Brazilian butt lift as part of their mommy makeover. The length of the surgery varies based on the amount and type of procedures performed. Some surgeons may perform a mommy makeover as two or more separate operations. It is important to ask yourself certain questions before deciding to have a mommy makeover. Are you done having children? If you plan to have more children, wait. The vertical muscles in the abdomen (which are tightened during a tummy tuck) can re-separate. Are you at a stable weight? Being at a stable weight before surgery can help maximize the results. Lose all your baby weight with diet and exercise before having plastic surgery. Are you finished breastfeeding? You should wait until you are finished breastfeeding before having breast surgery because the enlarged ducts and increased blood vessel activity of the breast during nursing increases bleeding and the risk of infection.

Estate Planning During Times of Uncertainty BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE ur world has changed. As I sit at my desk drafting this column it is difficult to distill my thoughts into a cogent message. So much has happened over the past 60 days. So much has happened in the past week. And when this column is published in late May/early June, I cannot predict where we will be. My practice has changed. Emergency Florida Bar rules currently prohibit me from meeting with clients in my office. But I am now an expert at setting up Zoom meetings and am able to effectively communicate with clients to provide the legal counsel they seek. We have also devised a new process for the review and ultimately the execution of estate planning documents before witnesses and a notary. It’s a bit like having your food or packages safely delivered to your home. Estate planning is one way that we can prepare for uncertainty. We try to imagine all possible scenarios and then establish structures, give instruction, and empower others to implement our vision of how the future should be handled in our absence. So I ask you to consider the following. Do you have an estate plan? Is it up to date? Does it adequately address your particular family situation including who will care for your minor children? What about a child with special needs? Does it provide for the financial needs of your loved ones? Will, it layout a smooth path for the continuation and control of your business? Begin to address these important matters. Reach out to your estate planning attorney and financial advisor. Ask questions. Learn about options and choices and consequences. And make a plan. As most of us are at home and social distancing, some may consider using an online service such as LegalZoom or Suze Orman to create their estate planning documents. Keep in mind that estate planning is so much more than filling out forms. You are paying for legal advice and counsel. It is my opinion that creating documents without receiving the benefit of legal counsel can undermine the entire purpose of estate planning and could result in unexpected consequences that prove costly to correct. Furthermore, keep in mind that estate planning is something you do for your loved ones, not for yourself. You owe it to your family to make sure that everything is done correctly, the first time. If you don’t have an estate planning attorney, now is the time to connect with one. Fortunately, there are many qualified estate planning attorneys in this area. Find the person who has competence in the field, has a process that provides the opportunity to discuss and explore various options, and has the personality and “bedside manner” that makes you feel comfortable. Do research, make calls. Life can change in a minute. Now, more than ever, what are you waiting for?

TEE TO GREEN

How To Practice Your Short Game BY DEAN SKLAR, PGA PROFESSIONAL

S

ometimes, golfers have to rely on a strong wedge play game to get out of tough obstacles or drive the ball those last few yards to the green. If you’re unsure of your chipping or pitching, or you struggle on bunker shots around the hole, the tips below can help you to improve your wedge game and ultimately reduce the number of strokes for each hole. Most golfers don’t get a lot of experience before they’re already playing their first round of golf with getting balls out of tricky bunkers and onto the green. These bunker shots require your short clubs, called wedges, to lift the ball out of the sand trap and back up onto the playing green toward the hole. Similarly, players who find themselves in the rough grass just outside the putting green might have to chip or pitch their ball over the last few yards with a wedge in order to maintain control and guide the ball closer to the hole. Bunker Shots When a player gets caught in a sand bunker or green side bunkers, the best option to get them closer to or in the hole is to utilize a wedge club to knock the ball firmly but gently enough to get it up and out of the pit and onto the playing field without going too far past the target. Perhaps the most important element of sharpening a player’s technique when it comes to bunker shots is to assess and understand the point of entry drill for sand shots as well as adjusting to different sand conditions. Depending on the depth of the ball in the deep rough, the thickness and wetness of the sand, and the distance to a hole, a player will have to reassess the angle of attack to the ball required to gently drive the ball out of the bunker. It’s important, too, for golfers to remember to not hit the ball too high or even too low as either will result in catastrophe — if he/she hits it too high, the ball will just drive further down into the sand trap, while if he/she hits it too low, it might “scull” it far past the intended target (the pin) or even directly up in the air. Chipping and Pitching Over Obstacles Sometimes it may be required that a golfer hit a lob shot, also known as a flop shot, to lob the ball over a particularly rough patch before the putting green. Many players try to imagine targets in front of them such as water or a bunker to carry the ball over and then try to identify strengths and weaknesses around the putting green in order to better and more rapidly

improve their games. Shortening a player’s backswing and accelerating the club may also improve chipping as hitting the ball down will pop it up quickly before driving it directly toward the hole along the surface of the putting green. Similarly, practicing these shots can also help to improve chipping. It’s important for players to remember that a good and successful chip drill requires that players keep the club moving through impact in order to provide a full chip with the most control, and players should favor chipping over pitching when possible. n PGA Professional Dean Sklar is a member of the Quarter Century Club of the PGA of America, an elite group of members who have served the PGA with honor and pride for 25 years. Grieving for Guava: Stories CECILIA M. FERNANDEZ

C

astro’s communist regime gained control of Cuba in 1959, sparking a surge of immigration to the United States, particularly Miami, as refugees sought a better life. But for many, Cuba will always be home. The island’s stories pass from refugee to refugee, immigrant to grandchild, mingling hope for the future with grief for what’s lost. Yet these stories also pass down a deep, unconscious desire for the unattainable, which often results in fractured relationships and a loss of purpose for both young and old. Grieving for Guava revels in the unbroken ties between past and future, Havana and Miami, and recounts the unintended generational costs of immigration. Ten stories explore the lives of Cuban refugees in Miami as they grapple with a longing for the past and a fervent need to move forward. Spanning six decades of the Cuban exile, these stories lay bare a collective struggle to overcome the destabilizing effects of migration and to reassemble splintered identities: A journalist returns to the island for a childhood toy. An investment banker leaves Miami to open a bookstore near the Malecon. A girl with cerebral palsy attempts to swim across the ocean to reach her lost home. Cecilia Fernandez artfully weaves together the complicated lives of her characters to produce an overarching sense of yearning for the past, transforming grief into an even more powerful force: communion. Grieving for Guava captures the heartache and hope that are common in the immigrant experience, adding a dynamic, human voice to the politically charged dialogue surrounding immigration.

Praise for Grieving for Guava “Cecilia M. Fernandez’s Grieving for Guava is a magnificent portrayal of every facet of the Cuban exile experience. Haunting short stories convey the pain, loss, longing, and courage of the exiles.”—Dan Wakefield, author of New York in the Fifties and Going All the Way “What a lovely tribute to the author’s roots and to her tribe of early exiles! With Grieving for Guava, Cecilia M. Fernandez has accomplished what I didn’t think was still possible: to surprise and delight this reader with stories that I thought I already knew.”—Mirta Ojito, author of Finding Mañana: A Memoir of a Cuban Exodus “Fernandez’s stories engage questions of identity and belonging within the Cuban exile community of Miami. The narratives in this collection are character-driven, delving into complex psychology that helps to paint a vivid picture of the interior and exterior worlds the characters inhabit. Filled with concrete details, vibrant interiority, and smart collisions between internal and external conflicts, the stories challenge readers to feel the power of the characters’ grief and longing.”—Joanna Luloff, author of The Beach at Galle Road and Remind Me Again What Happened About the Author Cecilia M. Fernandez is an award-winning journalist who teaches composition and literature at Broward College and Nova University. She is the author of Leaving Little Havana: A Memoir of Miami’s Cuban Ghetto, which won first place in the 2015 International Latino Book Awards and was chosen by TheLatinoAuthor.com as one of the top ten nonfiction books of 2015. HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS

Hurricane Season is Here – Be Prepared BY STACEY BOMSER

T

he 2019 Atlantic hurricane season started on June 1st and runs through November 30th. Early predictions are for an average to slightly-above average season in terms of activity. Experts from Colorado State University’s hurricane research team forecast 13 named storms of which five will become hurricanes and two will become major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger). For comparison, during an average hurricane season there are 12 named storms, six hurricanes and three major hurricanes. While the number of storms predicted this year is close to normal, the overall activity – based on the intensity of storms and their energy – is expected to be slightly below average. “This year, we think that there will be a few less tropical storms and lower numbers in hurricanes, but again, the old saying is ‘it only takes one’,” cautions AccuWeather Atlantic Hurricane Expert Dan Kottlowski. That being said, now is the time to start preparing your family and your home for hurricane season. The first thing you should do is put together your hurricane supply kit, stocked with all the essentials you will need to provide for your family during and following a storm. Be sure to include flashlights and lanterns with extra batteries, first

aid supplies, cash, food and water, and copies of all critical documents. You should also create a family emergency communication plan; know how to get in touch with each other, especially if phone or internet service is knocked out. Register for text and/or email alerts for emergency notifications.

Prepare your home by trimming tree branches and limbs and securing and clearing rain gutters and downspouts. Now is also the time to make sure your hurricane shutters are in proper working order. The beginning of hurricane season is also a good time to familiarize yourself with the terminology. It’s important that you understand exactly what the meteorologists and newscasters are saying and what that means. Here are some of the most common terms as defined by the National Hurricane Center: Tropical Cyclone – an organized rotating system of clouds and thunderstorms that originates over tropical or subtropical waters and has a closed lowlevel circulation Tropical Storm – a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 39-73 mph Hurricane – a tropical cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 74 mph or higher; a major hurricane is when winds are 111 mph or higher Hurricane Warning – hurricane conditions (sustained winds of 74 mph or higher) are expected in an area; issued 36 hours in advance of the anticipated onset Hurricane Watch – hurricane conditions are possible; issued 48 hours in advance of the anticipated onset

What To Do When A Storm Approaches BY STACEY BOMSER

T

wo years ago, Hurricane Irma set her sights on South Florida. While we were fortunate and escaped the brunt of her powerful strength, that scare was enough to remind us all of how important it is to be ready for hurricane season. Here are some helpful tips on what you need to know to be prepared before, during and after a storm. As the storm approaches Start preparing your home before the storm gets near. That means covering windows and doors with hurricane shutters and bringing in outdoor furniture, garbage cans, and anything else that is not tied down and could become airborne. Charge your cell phone and back-up batteries in case you lose power. Withdraw cash from the bank, as ATM’s will not work in a power outage. Gas up your car and buy extra gas if needed to fuel generators or gas-

powered tools. Fill aluminum or plastic containers with drinking water; you need enough for one gallon per person per day for at least three days. In addition, fill pre-sanitized sinks and tubs with water for bathing and flushing toilets. Turn your refrigerator and freezer to the coldest setting and open only when necessary; this will help keep food safe longer if the power goes out. During the storm Monitor your radio or television for weather updates and instructions from public safety officials. Also check emails and social media sources for emergency notifications. Stay inside, preferably in an interior room with no windows. If the power goes out, use flashlights or battery-operated lanterns; do not use candles or kerosene lamps during the storm. Do not go outside during the eye of the storm – it may appear calm but hurricane-force winds will resume shortly. This is NOT the time to clean-up around the house. After the hurricane Listen to local officials for updates and instructions; do not go outside until authorities say it is safe. Many

disaster-related injuries occur in the aftermath of the storm – watch out for debris and downed power lines. Avoid walking or driving through flood waters. Just six inches of moving water can knock a person down and fast-moving water can sweep a car away. In addition, flood water may be electrically charged from underground or downed power lines. It could also hide dangerous debris. Once it is safe to walk around outside your home, photograph any damage to the structure or property to assist in filing an insurance claim. Don’t forget to check-in with family and friends to make sure everyone is safe.

What’s In Your Bag?

A

s we enter hurricane season, it’s essential that every family have a fully-stocked emergency supply kit. After a hurricane, or other emergency, you may need to survive on your own for several days until aid can arrive. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recommends that everyone have enough food, water and necessities to last for three to five days. A basic emergency supply kit should contain one gallon of water per person per day to use for drinking and sanita-

tion. You should also have at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food for each person, along with a can opener. That includes baby formula and baby food. You also want to include mess kits or paper goods and plastic eating utensils. Every emergency kit should have a battery-powered or hand crank radio, preferably a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert, and extra batteries. Flashlights and lanterns with extra batteries are also essential. Other necessities include a first aid kit, whistle to signal for help, and household cleaning supplies including garbage bags. You may need to go several days without running water, so it’s good to stock moist towelettes along with other personal hygiene items. Be sure to include a wrench or pliers to turn off utilities

and make sure you have charcoal or propane for the grill. While that’s what you need for a basic hurricane supply kit, FEMA does have a list of extra items you should consider adding. Be sure to include eyeglasses and any prescription medication you or someone in the family needs. If you have a baby, your kit should include baby care items such as disposable diapers and wipes. Don’t forget to prepare for your pet’s care as well with pet food and extra water. It’s a good idea to include sleeping bags or blankets and pillows for each member of the family. Your kit should

also contain a change of clothing for every member of the family, including sturdy shoes as there may be a lot of debris. Emergency kits should also include an extra set of car keys, cash because ATM’s and credit card devices might not work without power, and books, games, puzzles and other activities to keep entertained if there is no TV or internet. Lastly, make sure to gather all important documents in waterproof containers. This includes emergency contact numbers, insurance policies (home, auto, life, etc.), medical records, bank account numbers, etc. FEMA recommends you store items in airtight plastic bags and put the entire hurricane supply kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as plastic bins or a duffel bag. n For more tips on what to include in a hurricane supply kit visit www. ready.gov/build-a-kit.

At-Home Activities to Boost Your Heart Rate, Health & Mood

E

ngaging in activities that raise your heart rate burns calories, improves circulation, and lowers your blood pressure. There are a number of at-home activities that can get your heart pumping and help keep you active and healthy. To help you get moving at home, the health experts at Envolve, an integrated healthcare solutions company, have put together five house and yard work activities that can improve your health. 1. Go For Gardening. Tending to a garden is a great way to enhance your overall health and get outdoors. Thirty minutes of moderate-intensity weeding, mulching, hoeing, or harvesting can help you meet the level of recommended daily exercise. Spending time surrounded by plants and green space is also a therapeutic way to reduce stress and anxiety. Plus, the extra time spent in the sun can increase vitamin D levels improving your mood and keeping your immune system strong. 2. Complete Chores. Sweeping, mopping, or vacuuming the floor is also a productive way

66 MAY/JUNE 2020 | OUR CITY | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

to get off the couch and get moving. With the potential to burn more than 200 calories per hour, these chores help you get your steps in and tidy up at the same time. Even scrubbing the bathroom or washing the windows are great ways to shed calories, plus you might tone your arm muscles, as well. Car looking a little dingy? Try scrubbing it by hand to turn your chore into a workout. 3. Wrap Up Yard Work. Manicuring your lawn includes many high-intensity actions that can help you lose almost as many calories as you would at the gym. Digging and raking can really work up a sweat. In addition, mowing your lawn using a push mower builds cardiovascular endurance that can help reduce blood pressure. 4. Perform Upgrades. An elevated heart rate burns calories, so pull out plans for your next home improvement project and do-ityourself. Activities like painting a room, tiling a floor, or staining a fence can get your heart pumping. These projects won’t take the place of a full workout, but they are still beneficial

to your health. Plus, when you’re done you will be able to enjoy the fruits of your labor. 5. Participate in Play. Playing with your kids or pets is a great way to burn calories. Try enjoying a game of tag or catch in the backyard, and you all will get the heart-healthy benefits of the activity and the added advantage of being in the fresh air. A game of fetch with your dog is an aerobic exercise for both of you and can boost your health and your mood. org, which assists in supplying healthcare workers with medical-grade personal protective equipment (PPE). The 501c3 was started in 2014 by Hanna Guttentag, Stacey Gringauz and, Sofia Rothenberg. The group now includes local girls Gabby Fisher and Zoe Weissman. Their founding

premise was simply to make the world a better place by raising money for charity while doing something that they enjoyed. The group started selling bracelets, but has since expanded into other items, and now masks. Notably, 3 Heart Strings has donated more than $180,000 to the victims and families impacted by the tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas. The new face masks come in a variety of different patterns. The girls believe they are among the most comfortable, adjustable, and versatile masks available. They are

made with stretchable fabric and are machine washable. They are not, however, appropriate for medical workers. 3 Heart Strings also offers bracelets, posters, and yard signs that can be personalized bringing a smile to the recipients’ faces. PET CARE

Heartworm Protection for Dogs BY MIGUEL E. CORDOVA, DVM

H

eartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal condition that affects dogs, cats, and up to 30 other species of mammals. It is caused by parasitic worms (heartworms) living in the major vessels of the lungs and, occasionally, in the heart. The scientific name for the heartworm parasite is Dirofilaria immitis. Although heartworm disease is virtually 100% preventable, many dogs are diagnosed with it each year. Heartworm disease has been diagnosed in all 50 states. The American Heartworm Society (AHS) estimates that one million dogs in the United States are infected with the disease today, and this number may be rising. What Is ProHeart 6? ProHeart 6 is an injectable medication that is used in dogs six months of age or older to prevent heartworm disease. Your veterinarian will administer ProHeart 6 as a single injection under your dog’s skin. Once the drug is given, it continuously prevents heartworm disease for six months. Using ProHeart 6 means that you don’t need to remember to administer a monthly oral or topical heartworm preventive medication to your dog. Heartworm disease is transmitted by mosquitoes. To properly protect your dog, ProHeart 6 should be administered within one month before mosquitoes appear where you live. If you are switching from another heartworm preventive medication, ProHeart 6 should be administered within one month after the last dose of the other product. This will help ensure that your dog is continuously protected. In addition to preventing heartworm disease, ProHeart 6 treats hookworm

infections. Hookworms are parasites that can live in the intestines of dogs. These parasites attach to the inner lining of the intestines and drink blood. Hookworm infections can cause severe diarrhea, blood loss, and weight loss. In young puppies, severe hookworm infections can even be fatal. Hookworms can also infect humans, so treating infected dogs also helps to protect other family members. Important Safety Information Before initiating heartworm prevention with ProHeart 6, your veterinarian may recommend a full physical examination for your dog. Some diagnostic testing may also be recommended, including a heartworm test. Any dog that tests positive for heartworm disease should be treated before receiving ProHeart 6. Your veterinarian will likely review your dog’s medical history before administering ProHeart 6. Be sure to discuss any of your dog’s previous illnesses or medical problems with your veterinarian. ProHeart 6 should not be used in sick, debilitated, or underweight dogs or in dogs with a history of weight loss. It should be used with caution in dogs with a history of allergies, such as food allergy, flea allergy dermatitis, or allergic reactions to vaccines. Talk to your veterinarian about administering ProHeart 6 along with vaccines. n Animal Health Center @ Weston is “The Gentle Practice You Can Rely On”. Dr. Miguel E. SEEN ON SCENE

Life in 2020 with Covid-19 BY KALAI RAMU

This is a community project themed Living Life on The Edge. There are many ongoing initiatives by photographers to capture a moment in time during this cruel disease that’s kept us home and sadly, has taken too many too soon. As we are now restricted by the edges of our home under current city orders, I roped in friends in and around Weston to kick off this project. In order to capture families bonding in this surreal situation we have found ourselves in, while respecting social distances, I have been and will continue taking photos from the outside looking towards the entrance of the home. As you will see, some have chosen a light-hearted look at the situation and posed with props that reflect how they are occupying themselves while playing their part and living on the edge. I can safely say, everyone was happy to see me and have that tiny creative distraction and I am so happy to be able to uplift spirits ! Enjoy this showcase and if you’ve been a part of this THANK YOU and for your generous donations to Lotus House too. Instead of .... say Cheese, ...say Quarantine !
