Speaking with Our Kids

R

aising children is, in many ways, the most rewarding thing an adult can do. It is frequently challenging and can even be a harrowing task. The events of the past two months haven’t made things any easier. Parents everywhere went from trying to explain why school was canceled and why you really need to wear a mask, to grappling with how to discuss the death of George Floyd with their kids. We found that the best thing to do is simply to start a conversation. Kids these days have incredible access to information. They are often better informed on trending topics than adults. What they frequently are missing, is context. Without understanding the past, it is impossible to comprehend why millions of people would take to the streets after the killing of a single man. We are not the right people to give advice on how to help kids grapple with the subject of systemic racism. Nor will we tell you what political remedies we favor. We will, however, encourage every parent to talk with their kids. And, to listen to their perspective. The isolation forced on us by the pandemic has given every parent an opportunity to speak with their kids. We don’t plan on missing it. Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet

Summer of STEAM: Take the “MODS Challenge” All Summer Long

T

hanks to a partnership between the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) and Broward County Public Schools (BCPS), students across the District can continue to use their critical thinking skills and creativity to tackle an array of unique FREE STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) learning activities all summer long. MODS developed eight weeks of fun, innovative and STEAM project-based learning units with multiple science activities students can do at home and share on social media. The slate of activities that comprises the MODS Challenge was part of the District’s transition to distance learning due to the coronavirus pandemic and aimed to engage students with hands-on learning opportunities. The MODS Challenge offers a STEAM curriculum aligned with core educational standards. Through the challenges, students also have access to some of the IMAX® films in MODS’ extensive library of documentaries. All

MODS Challenge modules are available for students to access for free all summer long. Parents and students can pick the theme(s) in which they are interested in learning. Over the final week of the school year, MODS launched, the science behind hurricanes and climate. This final challenge was particularly timely as the start of hurricane season began June 1st. The virtual Eye of the Storm series was a collaboration of MODS, Florida International University’s (FIU) International Hurricane Research Center (IHRC) and was sponsored by the Florida Division of Emergency Management (FDEM) and IHRC. “As an epicenter for STEM in South Florida and a longstanding educational partner of the District, we were excited to engineer a project-based weekly curriculum that connects students to inspiring and relevant science,” said Joseph P. Cox, president and CEO of MODS. “Through the MODS Challenges, we are engag-

ing students with unique learning opportunities to spark their imaginations and develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills – all while having fun,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “We appreciate the ongoing collaboration with the Museum of Discovery and Science in providing these challenges. It’s an example of the positive impact we can have on our students by working together through community partnerships.” The MODS Challenges are accessible by BCPS students via Canvas and on the MODS website, mods. org/modschallenge. MODS Challenge themes include: ▸  Environment and Nature ▸  Engineering ▸  Physical Science ▸  Ecosystems ▸  Health and Wellness ▸  Space ▸  Animals ▸  Eye of the Storm: Hurricanes and Climates Students can share their projects with MODS and BCPS through Twitter using @browardschools and @modsftl with #MODSChallenge. Special thanks to Wells Fargo and Ultimate Software for sponsoring the MODS Challenge.

A Grand Pledge of Allegiance BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

lmost 10 years ago, the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) launched the award-winning Downtown Hollywood Mural Project (DHMP) as part of their arts-focused initiative to enhance the diversity and vibrancy of the city’s most popular area. Since its inception, a vast collection of curated outdoor murals by local, national, and internationally recognized artists can be seen across a multitude of buildings downtown. Most recently, a new masterpiece was unveiled which brings the count to twenty-six. The latest outdoor art installation illustrates a waving American flag with a soldier proudly saluting fittingly covers the main façade of the American Legion Post 92 building, located at 211 N. 21st Avenue. “The CRA staff is honored to have the opportunity to work with the American Legion 92. The mural painted on their building by veteran and artist Joel Blenz has transformed the building into a landmark. It is both impressive and meaningful and is also one part of a multi-phase improvement plan for the American Legion 92 that the CRA is funding,” said Lisa Liotta, Redevelopment and Operations Manager. The large-scale work of art holds a special significance for both the artist who created it and those who occupy the building it adorns. The 60-by-20-foot mural crafted with wire, metal, and paint to produce a 3-D illusion of a real flag that was created by artist and Navy veteran Joel Blenz. “As a Navy veteran, I think the idea of a realistic flag is symbolically powerful to show allegiance and strength for the United States,” said Blenz, a Queens, New York native who served as a Navy aviation technician for six years out of high school. While the self-taught artist has created 40 to 50 murals, the patriotic piece presented unique challenges because of the construction aspect, which required a staple gun and concrete staples to affix the wire and metal. He was assisted in the project by his wife Alice Mizrachi, an artist who worked on another Downtown Hollywood mural where she was assisted by Blenz in 2018. “Joel knows what it’s like to serve his country. They treat him like their brother,” Mizrachi said. “It’s a beautiful thing.” Blenz and Mizrachi said the members of American Legion Post 92 have been very welcoming and are excited about the new mural. “Working with the American Legion Post 92 and the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) has been an outstanding experience,” added Blenz. For more information about redevelopment projects, businesses, and events in Hollywood’s Downtown and Beach Districts, call the Hollywood Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) at 954-9242980 or visit www.hollywoodcra.org.

Virtual Chess Championship Sets Records in Participation

B

roward County Public Schools (BCPS) first Virtual Chess Championship set a record in participation as 167 students in elementary, middle and high school put their chess skills to the test, competing in more than 300 games. BCPS partners with chess organizations, such as Chess4Life, to incorporate chess into the school

day for elementary students, as well as after school chess clubs for students of all ages. Due to school closures as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, the Spring Chess Championship, which had previously attracted as many as 150 students for face-to-face mental bouts, was moved to a virtual landscape. The tournament, held Friday, May 15, was divided into four categories by grade level: kindergarten through second, third through fifth, sixth through eighth and ninth through 12th. At the end of five rounds of competition, the winners emerged: kindergarten through second grade - Matthew Dunlop from Eagle Point Elementary School; third through fifth grade: Miles Rosner from Beachside Montessori Village Academy; sixth through eighth grade - Alice Wu from Falcon Cove Middle School tied with Vladimir Bershanskiy from Parkway Middle School; and ninth through 12th grade - David Reyes-Tobar from Fort Lauderdale High School. “Chess is an important part of our District’s plan for preparing students for success,” said BCPS

Superintendent Robert Runcie. “It helps to enhance students’ problem-solving skills, concentration, and creativity and provides great lessons in patience and sportsmanship. I congratulate all the winners and competitors for challenging themselves by participating.” Aspiring chess experts can continue to hone their chess skills during distance learning by accessing the Chess4Life platform through the District’s Clever portal. Hollywood Police Parade Surprises Little Brothers And Sisters

H

ollywood Police Department paraded 17 police vehicles – cruisers, SUVs, and SWAT vehicles with flashing lights and sirens screaming and whooping – to surprise Little Brothers and Sisters, who officers mentor as part of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ Bigs in Blue initiative. The officers organized and participated in the parade to reconnect and have fun with their Littles during this period of COVID-19. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward President and CEO Ana Cedeno, couldn’t have agreed more. “The parade was a great opportunity for our officers to interact with our Littles during this time of pandemic,” said Hollywood Police Department Major Derik Alexander, a Big Brother to Dwayne. “With all the scary things they’ve seen on television, they saw that police were still out and keeping them safe. They also had the opportunity to see their Big and interact with them. Just the human interaction, physical presence, and smiles were enough to warm my heart. The Hollywood Police Department’s collaboration with Bigs in Blue to host this police parade was just fantastic.” “The officers at the Hollywood Police Department truly went above and beyond to connect with their Littles in a ‘Big’ way,” said Cedeno. “We’re so grateful to Major Alexander and Sergeant Selina Hightower for putting together this super-fun police parade. It was really exciting, and the kids just loved it.” The youth at the event were joyfully surprised to see the parade of loud vehicles, and all the Bigs and Littles were happy to reconnect. Major Alexander was particularly pleased to see his Little Brother.

“Dwayne is a very smart young man,” said Major Alexander. “He’s a joy to mentor, and we share life and fun together. What an awesome way to relieve stress, bring joy to a young person, and keep them engaged with life in general. I look forward to more and more interaction as the pandemic subsides, and we are allowed to go back to a sense of normalcy.” The Littles, their siblings, and parents gathered at the Sheridan Street Tri-Rail Station parking lot awaiting a surprise without knowing any details. The loud and boisterous police parade delighted everyone in attendance. After the initial surprise, the 9- and 10 year-olds and their siblings received goody bags from the officers and had a chance to say hello face-to-face after many weeks apart.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation

During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

lthough Ocean Day 2020 needed to be postponed due to the global Coronavirus pandemic, The City of Hallandale Beach, in partnership with the City of Hollywood, Broward County, Sierra Club Broward Group, Florida Department of Environmental Protection Coral Reef Conservation Program, and Friends of Our Florida Reefs worked diligently since October 2019 to create an event for the 50th anniversary of the first Earth Day. “We were excited to see so many organizations and people coming together to create a fun, hands-on educational event for our coastal communities. We look forward to sharing the wonders of our oceans and Florida’s Coral Reef with everyone in the future and will continue to build these partnerships as we all take the steps necessary to protect the health and safety of our communities,” expressed Joanna Walczak, Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Office of Resilience and Coastal Protection Southeast Regional Administrator: The free, family-friendly event was designed to highlight the wonderful coastal resources available in Southeast Florida. Over 40 governmental exhibitors for ocean conservation, reef conservation and restoration, manatees, sea birds, sea turtles, sharks, parks and beaches, urban farming and home gardening, home/business energy conservation, and more were to line the auditorium at Hallandale Beach’s Cultural Community Center. From wildlife presentations, and a free BleachWatch class for snorkelers and scuba divers to the many panel discussions by key industry experts, lectures by featured speakers, vendors, and the BSO Shred Truck, the day was anticipated by so many. However, the committee is 100% committed to presenting the event as soon as possible. “This is a dynamic, committed team. We are undaunted and will bring this event together at another time later this year. While environmental problems recede from our minds in the face of immediate threats to health and safety, these problems don’t just go away on their own. When normal circumstances resume, we too will resume our efforts to raise awareness and empower people by engaging folks in fun educational events like Ocean Day,” stated Elaine Franklin, Environmental Sustainability Coordinator for the City of Hollywood. “Postponing Ocean Day was the right thing to do for public health and the safety of our human communities. However, reactivating Ocean Day as soon as the coast is clear with COVID-19, that’s the right thing to do for our community and our environment. I’m hoping that this crisis, focused on a virus that spread to humans from other animals, inspires people to learn more about the environment and how we can respect it. Humans are part of the environment and the better we treat the environment, the better situation for all,” added Alyssa Jones Wood, Green Initiatives Coordinator for the City of Hallandale Beach.

Healthy Mothers of Broward BY TERRY JAILLET

T

here are guardian angels in Broward County. These angels are not the kind with wings. In fact, they are ordinary people like you and me. They are, however, looking out for the most helpless of us all: infants. These angles help disadvantaged pregnant women and new mothers through their pregnancies and the first year of their babies’ lives. Local charity Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies Coalition of Broward County, has been helping up to 4,000 local families at a time for over 20 years. The 501(c)3’s mission is to reduce infant deaths by strengthening families through a comprehensive approach to prenatal care, parenting, education, and support services. About 1 of every 200 babies born in Broward County don’t make it to their first birthday. For minorities and economically disadvantaged groups, the data are even worse. Black babies are four times more likely to die in their first year of life than white babies. Poor mothers are less likely to seek and have access to prenatal care than wealthier mothers. Healthy Mothers focuses its work on the five Broward zip codes with the highest infant mortality rate. One of the organization’s signature programs, The Mahogany Project, provides intensive case management services to in-need mothers, including: ▸  Prenatal Support ▸  Childbirth Education ▸  Breastfeeding Education ▸  Nutrition Education ▸  Support Groups ▸  Individual Counseling ▸  Medical Case Management The organization is led by Executive Director, Linda Cichon, who started with the Healthy Mothers 23 years ago. “My involvement in this effort is personal. I had a baby that was stillborn. I stayed connected with a nurse that helped me through that moment in my life and began to volunteer. I guess, I never left.” Cichon also highlighted one of the group’s most successful programs, its Teen Leadership Council. The Teen Council is comprised of dedicated teen volunteers from many area high schools. The young people lead Healthy Mothers’ Grab N Go Lunch program. They have delivered more than 2,000 meals to in-need families during this unprecedented time. The students truly embrace their mantra of Saving Lives, Guiding Futures and Inspiring Hope. In addition to meals, mentorship and education, Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies offers pregnant women and new moms classes on how to make healthier meals ,as well as ,supplying healthy produce to the families. It is a comfort to know that the families most in need are being watched over by guardian angels from Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

Greetings To Our City Hollywood Readers BY MAYOR JOSH LEVY hope this edition of Our City Hollywood finds you and your family coping well during these challenging times. As of this writing, our community has been on a defensive footing against the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic for three months, and unless you are over 100 and were alive for the flu pandemic of 1918, witnessing and being a part of a national response to a pandemic continues to be an unprecedented experience for us all. In the beginning of this public health emergency, we were informed that “flattening the curve” and preventing the spread of the virus was what we needed to do, to save lives and to prevent the overrunning of our state’s medical facilities. Thanks to everyone doing their part, we succeeded in accomplishing that. Viral infections are holding at very low levels, and as difficult as they have been to undertake, the protective measures that the CDC, state and local health officials recommended, undoubtedly saved many lives. Special appreciation has to be extended to Memorial Regional Hospital and Dr. Randy Katz, who serves as the Emergency Medical Director for the hospital and for Hollywood Fire-Rescue. As our medical advisor, Dr. Katz was instrumental in guiding city leadership through the early stages of the COVID-19 crisis and toward where we are today. There are so many people, organizations, houses of worship and volunteers to thank for helping our community see this through. To everyone who helped out, to each of our city employees and to each and every resident, we thank you.

I

At this point in time, we are entering into a new phase of combatting the virus; getting back to life and making a living, but with precautions - “the new normal.” Wearing facial coverings while indoor in public places. Keeping physical distance in public. Washing our hands frequently, and taking measures in our businesses to make these establishments safe for guests, customers and employees is the new normal. Considering all that we’ve accomplished to date, I know our residents will continue to demonstrate the personal responsibility needed to see this pandemic through to its eventual end. Beyond the virus, our community is witnessing a historic national expression of protest following the killing of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police officers. This crime, where an officer literally choked the life from Mr. Floyd’s body while he pleaded that he couldn’t breathe with three other officers failing to intervene, shocked the conscience of our nation. Much healing will be needed for our country to get to a better place. In Hollywood, I want every concerned citizen to know that you have the commitment of our city’s leadership and the commitment of the men and women of the Hollywood Police Department for professional and unbiased policing without exception. The work needed to continuously improve ourselves and our institutions is unending and requires focus, honesty and determination. I wish everyone a safe and healthy summer season. Josh Levy
