This Valentine’s Day, Show Someone You Love Them

E

ach year, on February 14th, millions of people around the world demonstrate their love for someone special by giving Valentine’s Day gifts. While chocolate, flowers or jewelry remain the most popular presents, there are many more interesting options available. People who appreciate sentiment more than financial value may give a hand-written coupon book to their love, complete with “free massage” or “I do the dishes” coupons, to be redeemed by their mate at a future date. Others may give a gift in support of their partner’s passion -- a new 3-wood for a golfer or a set of paint brushes for an artist. Other options include heart-shaped pizzas or twohanded mittens, meant for lovers to keep warm while holding hands (probably not the most practical present here in South Florida). Personally, we prefer the simple Sweetheart candies with “be mine” stamped on the side. No matter what you give, if you give from your heart, your Valentine is sure to be happy. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day! Sincerely,

Miami Gardens Cheer Squad Wins a Place at the Dolphins Competition COMMUNITY NEWS

ust before the winter break, the Miami Dolphins Youth Programs hosted a Dolphins Championship Series Cheer Competition. More than 1,000 children ages 4-15 years old from MidFlorida, Gold Coast Pop Warner, American Youth Football League, Florida Youth Football League, Miami Xtreme & National Youth Football League gathered for championship cheer competitions at the Don Taft University Center Arena at Nova Southeastern University including Miami Gardens Chiefs cheerleaders. Emily Bellamy, Miami Gardens Chiefs Park Commissioner witnessed the excitement her girls experienced upon meeting the Dolphins Cheerleaders. During the event they learned that if they are passionate about the sport, they could continue cheering in college, receive scholarships and ultimately make it a career. At first the girls were nervous Photo: Miami Dolphins about competing on such a large scale with other area champions. But once they arrived they discovered that everyone there was just like them, they relaxed a bit and did what they came to do. After a full day of competing these eight, nine and ten-year-olds placed as Level Three winners. The event was organized so the girls had time to rest and

prepare for their routines. “They were excited! This is something they love,” said Bellamy. “If you are passionate about it, you’re excited to be a part of it!” “This event is new to our youth programs line up, but we’ve had a tremendous response,” Miami Dolphins Youth Programs Coordinator Cassy Congemi said. “We have more than 60 teams here, and the spirit level is high. The Dolphins cheerleaders are here, escorting groups through the rotations and taking photos. That brings an extra element for these young girls looking up to the Dolphins cheerleaders.” “Winning is always something you want to strive for,” stated Bellamy. “You don’t go out there and second guess yourself. You want to strive for greatness and to do your best. Win or lose, I’m proud of them at the end of the day.” The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’ mission is to emphasize the importance of education, physical fitness, and positive choices for kids in a safe and fun environment. The Miami Dolphins Youth Programs’ vision is to prepare the next generation of leaders in staying physically active through our Junior Training Camps (JTC), Youth Football Clinics and Youth Football Camps.

he Humane Society of Greater Miami Soffer and Fine Adoption Center got in the holiday spirit with their 5th annual “Holiday Lights for the Animals” celebration. The event coincided with their annual holiday donation campaign, “Holiday Lights for the Animals”. Those that participated were able to brighten the center with holiday lights and plenty of holiday cheer for the four-legged friends by making the following contributions: A $20 donation illuminated one light or candle, a $100 donation set a strand of lights aglow, a $200 donation illuminated a wreath or menorah, and finally, a $500 donation lit an entire tree. “It was great to see so many great friends and families come by the Humane Society of Greater Miami’s Soffer and Fine Adoption Center to celebrate the holidays with our furry friends while enjoying delicious treats and great holiday fun,” said Melanie Ochoa, Communications and Marketing Coordinator of the Humane Society of Greater Miami. “The afternoon was filled with joyous cheer as children frolicked around the shelter completing an exciting scavenger hunt and enjoying delicious treats and hot chocolate.” Visitors enjoyed magical musical performances by the students of Holy Cross Lutheran School and Highland Oaks Elementary School. Also in attendance was the mayor of North Miami Beach, George Vallejo. He enjoyed meeting and visiting with the shelter animals along with

FEATURE STORY

check Hillel Community School, one of the world’s largest Jewish community day schools, has been serving South Florida for more than four decades, since opening its doors in 1970. The enrollment of more than 1,100 students from 18 months-grade 12 represents 20 countries across the globe. The National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence sits on 14 acres, which include a state of the art 115,000 square foot athletic complex with additional academic expansion plans. Scheck Hillel is guided by its philosophy to tailor education to the whole child for a personalized, rigorous college preparatory experience. Students develop identity, nurture talent, discover passion and find purpose, empowering them as the rising generation of creators, innovators and leaders. Scheck Hillel shifts the question so students ask, “Who do I want to be?” rather than “what”. “Our students become reflective global citizens with strong Jewish identity, ready and eager to write the next chapter through their own definitions of success, happiness and fulfillment,” said Dr. Ezra Levy, Head of School. Scheck Hillel’s reputation for academic excellence comes from the nurturing environment that fosters personal growth. Talented faculty and dedicated families partner for the students, developing compassionate, knowledgeable Jewish leaders for a modern global society. The curriculum teaches students morally, intellectually, spiritually and physically through rigorous study, cultural experiences, arts and athletics, service learning and leadership, so students cultivate a 21st century skill set. Nationally recognized faculty and a range of programs create opportunity for Scheck Hillel students to excel to their full potential. Seniors graduate to Ivy League universities, colleges throughout the country and Gap Year programs in Israel, demonstrating the diversity of the Jewish community school. Highlights come in the form of courses as well as initiatives beyond the classroom. For example, Scheck Hillel’s College Readiness Program has become a hallmark of its Capstone Senior Seminar. Organizations from across the country reach out to be part of this unique, meaningful educational experience for seniors, culminating college preparation in terms of academics, social-emotional wellbeing and spiritual growth. The school’s Jaime and Raquel Gilinski Hillel Ambassador Program is also a special element. Alumni of this prestigious nearly decade-old merit-

based scholarship and leadership program are across the globe as college students and working professionals. And a beloved Scheck Hillel tradition is the Grade 9 Israel trip, which fuses General and Judaic Studies and Hebrew, and engraves a lifelong love for Israel in students’ hearts. An example of the school’s individualized approach to education is college counseling, which begins in grade 8 and spirals with intensity through grade 12. Counselors navigate the journey of college preparation, application and admission alongside families, partnered to match graduates with the universities that are best for them based on students’ interests, goals and abilities. Within Scheck Hillel’s dual curriculum of General and Judaic Studies/Hebrew Language, academics are rounded out with rich co-curricular offerings. The Design/STEM curriculum comprises Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, Design, Biomedical Engineering, AP Computer Science and Physics, and expands into experiential learning. The iLab houses courses during the day as well as after-school options like a weather station project and the Girls Building STEAM Club, reinforcing design and coding taught during school hours. Extending hands to local service projects and communities afar, Scheck Hillel students fulfill leadership roles on campus, at home and in the global village, reinforcing the concept of tikkun olam: making the world a better place. Every year tens of thousands of community service hours are conducted through community partnerships and independent student projects. Such experiences – along with arts and athletics – empower students to discover talents within. The school’s Jordan Alexander Ressler Arts Program includes visual arts courses from Lower School through Advanced Placement in Upper School, as well as extracurricular orchestra, band, drumline and musical/technical theatre. Athletics offerings include team sports for Grades 4-12: football, basketball, soccer, tennis, volleyball, cross

country, golf and flag football. Students, faculty and the school itself have garnered recognition over the years: National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence, Silver Knight, 2016 Technion-Israel Institute of Technology Day School Challenge Winner, and State Soccer Champion and Fairchild Challenge titles. Last year, eight seniors were recognized by the 2016 National Merit & Hispanic Scholars Programs. Scheck Hillel is a place where children learn not only from teachers, but also from each other, reflecting the essence of the school’s mission. It’s through this mission that Scheck Hillel preserves tradition through innovation with hallways that are paths to academic achievement, creative development and spiritual growth, leading children toward global success and enduring Jewish identity. Defined, the Scheck Hillel Experience nurtures minds, souls and hearts, and encourages the lifelong learning that continuity requires.

Let’s Go Fly a Kite! COMMUNITY NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

H

undreds came out to the inaugural “Chanukah Kite Festival” at Haulover Park in Miami Beach in December. For the first time, the Michael-Ann Russell JCC presented the unique event to celebrate one of the favorite Jewish holidays known as the Festival of Lights along with other area organizations. Initially, the anticipated event was scheduled to be in October as the “Sukkot Kite Festival”. Unfortunately, it had to be cancelled and delayed because of the impending hurricane. However, Hurricane Matthew made a turn and all was safe in South Florida. Luckily, the weather in December was perfect for a large outdoor community event that featured kite flying. Families were able to make and design their own kites, as well as other Chanukah projects including menorah candle making. All the arts and crafts had Chanukah thematic designs which everyone big and small enjoyed creating. For those that wanted to just play, JCC coaches were on hand to organize sports activities. The Kids Fun Zone had plenty of inflatables from bounce houses to oversized inflatable balls to keep children of every age entertained. Furthermore, in celebration of the holiday, fire dancers dazzled guests with their unique talents. Finally, a fabulous event needs a great selection of foods, and a variety of delicious kosher Israeli treats were available. Exceptional food trucks served up items such as falafels, shawarma, schnitzel, Belgian waffles, smoothies, and roasted corn. Of course, the second day of Chanukah wouldn’t be complete without soufganiot (jelly doughnuts). “The Chanukah Kite Flying Festival was a unique way for our community celebrate the holiday of Chanukah. It was heart-warming watching parents, grandparents, and children enjoying the outdoors, interacting with one another,

and sharing in the spirit of the Festival of Lights,” said David Surowitz, Assistant Executive Director of the MAR-JCC. “At the same time, we are happy to have laid the groundwork for what will become an annual event.” The free program was developed by the Israel Programs Department of the Michael-Ann Russell Jewish Community Center, the Galbut Family Miami Beach Jewish Community Center, and the Israeli House of the Consulate General of Israel. The next program will be a community Tu B’shvat Celebration at TY Park in Hollywood on Sunday, February 12th, from noon until 3:00pm. It is organized by the Israel Programs Department of the Michael-Ann Russell JCC and the David Posnack JCC, with the support of many Jewish organizations, day schools, and synagogues.”

ore than 300 people attended the 2016 Chanukah Miracles Luncheon at the Diplomat Golf & Tennis Club in Hallandale Beach. The event raised $120,000, prior to receiving bonus pool earnings from Give Miami Day, the designated day when the Miami Foundation and its partners provide bonus gifts to registered nonprofit agencies who provide services in Miami-Dade County. Generous guests help fulfill the wishes of the 500 children JAFCO serves in its group home, emergency shelter, family preservation and developmental disability programs. The event also featured a shopping boutique, silent auction and Godparent pinning ceremony where 2 new Godparents were welcomed into the Godparent circle at this year’s luncheon. The JAFCO Godparent circle is comprised of a generous group of donors who spiritually adopt all of the JAFCO children. Godparents provide safety and security for the children by making a 10-year pledge of $18,000, which helps support the needs of the children by providing food, shelter, clothing, education and therapy. “It’s amazing to see such an outpouring of love from the community,” said

Sarah Franco, JAFCO Executive Director. “The Aventura/North Miami chapter has grown exponentially and as a result, we are able to see smiles on the faces of these precious children during the holidays. That is a priceless gift.” Chaired by Alexandra Bergman and Angela Birdman, the luncheon honored Shlomo Geva, well-known Hebrew teacher and tutor. Geva is an important member of the community not only for teaching Bar and Bat Mitzvah lessons, but for being an educator and mentor to the children of JAFCO. Aventura North/MiamiDade Chapter President Barbara Amoils served as luncheon advisor. INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL

The Tale of An Author, A Camera n’ A Key to the City BY BEVERLY PERKINS

N

MB native and Aventura resident Kraig Geiger was awarded last November the “Key to the City and a Proclamation” by Mayor George Vallejo for becoming a published author after overcoming many trials and tribulations. Geiger’s 230-page autobiography/pictorial anthology, Peace, Love n’ Mud took 22 years to complete. It was finally published and released worldwide by Waldorf Publishing on August 1, 2016. The inspiring story illustrates how the author had to overcome insurmountable odds to achieve making his dream into a reality. Although growing up in an abusive environment, Geiger envisioned himself photographing the Woodstock ’94 Music and Art Fair for a coffee table book representing the 25th anniversary of the 1969 Woodstock phenomenon.

Geiger wanted to cover all three phases of Woodstock ’94, so he flew out to New York three weeks before the festival to photograph the rolling green fields of Winston Farm, then flew back to shoot during the event, and stayed onsite to capture the festival’s aftermath in August of 1994. Financial issues, not having a book publishing deal in place, and not having one of the 70 official photo passes were the many major challenges Geiger had to face. However, his determination, insane networking ability and charm had fate on his side as he obtained the 71st photo pass, which really didn’t exist. Nonetheless, even with the aid of his photo pass, only 10 photographers would be selected to access the coveted photo pit position, getting them as close as possible to the front of the stage, for each group’s performance. With divine intervention intervening, Geiger was selected to be one of those lucky 10 photographers admitted into the photo pits of both the North and South stages. During the process, Geiger also accomplished coining the term Contographer ® (concert photographer) which was officially trademarked in 1996. Both Oxford and Merriam Webster’s Dictionaries new word division gave him “letters of file” citation for giving a moniker to an industry. Over the past 37-years, Geiger has

photographed more than 4,000 of the world’s greatest musicians, bands, groups, orchestras, and recording artists of all types, at more than 1,200 concert and festivals, including the Woodstock 1994 and ‘99 Music and Art Fairs. Photos: Stephanie R. Lax Geiger’s next book A Coffee Table Book of the World’s Greatest Rock n’ Roll Giclee’s has also been signed to a publishing deal. Turning his greatest concert images into giclees, 350375 of Geiger’s images of AC/DC to ZZ-Top is also being published and released in late summer 2017 by Waldorf Publishing. A fashion-line of private label denim jackets, t-shirts and socks featuring Geiger’s giclees was released at the end of 2016. The tenacious author, Photographic Pulitzer Award Nominee, Contographer ®, and now fashion designer proves that if one sets their mind on something and never gives up, it can be achieved.

Sushiato

4483 Weston Road, Weston 754-223-7923 $$ The concept behind Sushiato, the art of sushi; is different from what we know as Sushi restaurants, because Sushiato presents Sushi with a “Latin Fusion” exotic and tropical flavors mixed with original Japanese cuisine and recipes. Weston is a clear example of what a great fusion gives a city: diverse nationalities, cultures, styles, accents and flavors that melt to create a new identity.

If you had the chance to be revived in the future, would you take it? WHAT IS CRYONICS? Cryonics is an effort to save lives by using temperatures so cold that a person beyond help by today’s medicine might be preserved for decades or centuries until a future medical technology can restore that person to full health. Cryonics is a second chance at life. It is the reasoned belief in the advancement of future medicinal technologies being able to cure things we can’t today.

A

s previously determined, identity theft again tops the Federal Trade Commission’s list of consumer complaints. The sophistication level of professional identity thieves involved in organized crime continues to grow along with the methods they develop to gain unauthorized access to your personally identifying information- such as your name, social security number (SSN), or bank account information. From individually tailored phishing scams to increasingly successful hacks of corporate and government databases to elaborate networks to hijacking millions of computers without any trace, close to 100 million Americans have their personal identifying information placed at risk each year when records maintained in government and corporate databases are lost or stolen. As the basic methods of identity theft continue unabated, (i.e., dumpster diving and stealing mail) identity fraud has grown to include theft of: mobile and landline phone services; cable and satellite television services; power, water, gas and electric services; medical insurance; home mortgages and rental housing; automobile, boat and other forms of financing and loans; and government benefits. Identity thieves will also use stolen identities to obtain employment and to deceive police, when arrested. Simply put, every individual or business is vulnerable to attack when it comes to personal or corporate information, products and services. In this vein, the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) joins the U.S Department of Justice in recommending that individuals take the following four (4) steps to help protect one’s self against identity theft. These steps are represented by the acronym SCAM. S – Be “STINGY” when it comes to giving out personal information. Make sure the person requesting the information is on a “need-toknow” basis. C – CHECK your financial information periodically. If you get hard copy credit card or bank statements mailed to you, consider keeping these documents in a safe and secure location. Be skeptical if it appears that the financial institution has missed a month of the statements. A – From time to time, ASK for a copy of your credit report. To obtain a report, contact any of the three (3) major credit bureaus: Equifax, Experian, or Transunion. M—MAINTAIN good records of your financial accounts and obligations. Experts recommend that you keep hard copies or electronic versions of monthly bank and credit card statements. Additionally, there are established procedures for addressing identity theft, and they typically include notifying the Federal Trade Commission, as well as other relevant government agencies and financial institutions. For example, if you believe that your Tax Identification Number has been compromised (i.e., if your tax refund was claimed by a fraudster), contact your local Internal Revenue Service (IRS) office or online at www.IRS.Gov and complete and submit the IRS Identity Theft Affidavit. If you believe that an identity thief has changed your mailing address, you should notify the Postal Inspection Service by calling 1 (800) 275-8777. If you think your SSN has been compromised, notify the Social Administration by calling 1 (800)269-0271. Albeit identity theft may be the most frequent, costly and pervasive crime in the United States, you can avoid the hassle of having your identity stolen by continuing to personally monitor your financial accounts and records on a regular basis. To learn more about the City of North Miami Beach Police Department, please visit www.citynmb.com. For emergencies, please dial 9-1-1 and all other non-emergencies, please call (305) NMB-POLICE or (305) 662-7654.

Dogosterone Therapy: Quality of Life Treatment for Geriatric Dogs BY DAVID S. BIEBER, DVM

How It Works

Spayed and neutered dogs have a testosterone level of basically zero (<0.1mg/ml). We have found that as dogs get older, their muscle tone and bone density decreases, leading to one of the diseases

mentioned above. By using Dogosterone Therapy, we increase the testosterone level to normal levels, giving dogs an increase in muscle tone and bone density, which alleviates and/or helps a great deal in these illnesses. It gives the dogs being treated a much better quality of life in their later years.

How It All Started

It was the state of my own chocolate Labrador, Bruno, which prompted me to investigate the living conditions of geriatric dogs. In 2008, Bruno was 11 years old and became paralyzed in both rear legs due to chronic intervertebral disk disease, resulting in both of his cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) disk herniations. My family and I decided to get a wheel chair for Bruno. Since Bruno was neutered, I thought he had no muscle tone or bone density. At that point, I was desperate and decided to try Dogosterone Treatment on Bruno Bieber Bruno. Five months later, he was walking all by himself. He continued to walk on his own for another four years, until he naturally died of chronic renal failure.
