Summer Camp Traditions – We Need Them More Now Than Ever

T

he American tradition of summer camp goes back many years. The precursors to today’s camps were born during the turn of the 19th century as part of a “back to nature” cultural movement. Summer camp popularity took off during World War II. With fathers away fighting and mothers working to support the effort, organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, and the YMCA began camps to simply keep kids busy while school was out. What started out as cheap daycare has evolved into the myriad of camp options families have today. There is a camp for virtually every interest, from sports and theater to computer programming and world language studies. With so many choices available, some children explore several interests by attending multiple camp programs during the same summer. In addition to pursuing passions, summer camp is a chance for kids to try new things and make new friends. That’s more important than ever because today’s kids are growing up in the digital age. Summer camp allows children to connect with peers, play actual games not virtual ones, and experience the world around them. To find the best camp or camps for your child, check out the Our City Summer Camp Guide in this issue, or go to www.ourcitymedia.com for a complete listing of all the summer camp programs in the region. Sincerely,

T

he Plantation Art Guild (PAG) was established in the winner of PAG’s “Edna Mae Bryan Scholarship 1973 with the purpose of promoting and encourAward”. Escape This Summer into a Good Book – Sign Up for the Summer Reading Program BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he Sunrise Dan Pearl Branch Library is ready for its annual summer learning program to encourage reading over the summer months. The goal is to register 1,000 children and 500 adults in the free event. The Sunrise Dan Pearl Branch staff is committed to help foster literacy in the community. Unfortunately, during the summer months some children lose some of what was learned during the school year. This indicates “Summer Learning Loss”. This is when students regress in reading and other educational skills due to inactivity during the summer. “Summer Learning Loss” has a compounding effect every year a child does not engage in summer learning. However, this issue is preventable. It’s been shown that the majority of students who participate in the summer learning program actually progress over the summer. It has been noted that many students are fortunate to have new school clothes, new backpacks, and plenty of school supplies at the start of each academic year, but once school ends a problem may occur if they don’t stay engaged in reading. Some of these students who do not take the time to read during the summer months fall behind their classmates when school resumes. Students who fall into this category may end up experiencing other issues which could be avoided such as behavioral problems due to frustration. The Sunrise Dan Pearl Branch Library wants to reduce the number of students who lose valuable knowledge and skills. Students who do participate and complete the fun program end up progressing overall academically. “Investing in the literacy of our children is one of the most loving things we can do for them,” says Michael Bryant, Community Library Manager for Sunrise Dan Pearl Branch Library.

Love Notes – High School Band Plays a Holiday Concert at Local Senior Community BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

raditionally, high school bands are known to play at sporting events, parades, competitions, and various school and community functions. However, Calvary Christian Academy’s jazz band and a group of capella singers performed at a Valentine’s Day dance at a senior living community. Covenant Village of Florida in Plantation is a faith-based, not-for-profit continuing care retirement community, and one of the nation’s largest not-for-profit senior services providers. Its residents will never forget their recent holiday concert, and look forward to many more. The band played toe-tapping tunes of the past, while resident couples and friends danced across the room. The talented high school students also took to the dance floor by engaging and interacting with their eager and appreciative audience. “There is no age boundary with music,” said Doug Fennema, Covenant Village of Florida Executive Director. “Everyone was smiling and laughing. Residents didn’t lose a step. They jitterbugged and waltzed like it was 1945.” Covenant Village of Florida is becoming a regular gig for the

Calvary Christian Academy jazz band and a capella group. Students performed at the community’s Veterans Day event last year and will return this month for a Memorial Day performance. “The students were surprised to see how meaningful music is to this generation and how a song can bring them back to their younger days,” said Rochelle Frederick, Calvary Christian Academy’s high school instrumental teacher Covenant Village of Florida partners regularly with local schools for intergenerational opportunities. Through the community’s eSeniors program, students from St. Thomas Aquinas High School teach residents how to use technology. At Palm Villa, the skilled nursing neighborhood at Covenant Village, students in Nova Southeastern University’s (NSU) Health Professions Division used the sound of familiar music to create a positive experience for residents with dementia. To learn more about Covenant Village of Florida, call 877-6700889 or visit www.CovenantFlorida.org. It is located at 9215 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation, Fla.

Wishes Do Come True! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

M

ake-A-Wish Southern Florida just reached a milestone moment when they were able to grant the chapter’s 11,000th wish at Plantation’s Volunteer Park in early spring. The recipient of this grand gesture was Madison White, a Pembroke Pines resident, who has been undergoing chemo for osteosarcoma (bone cancer). During this time the brave teen had been taking riding lessons and has longed to compete in horse shows. Madison’s wish was to have a horse. “The wishes we grant aren’t just nice, they’re necessary,” said Norman Wedderburn, President and CEO, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. “The power of a dream fulfilled is often the pivot point in a family’s battle against illness, the place where people whose lives have been turned upside-down use the hope, strength, and joy we deliver to regain control,” Madison had no idea that she was going to be surprised with her new best friend, just days after her final chemotherapy treatment, and just before her 15th birthday. She was only told she was attending a horse show to support and help her trainer. During the event the announcer called her name and instructed her to proceed to the center of the arena. “Going out there, she (Madison) had no idea. She was overwhelmed,” said Jacqueline White, Madison’s mother. “It’s been an emotional day, happy though. She’s been through so much.”

The unsuspecting teen had no idea that she was South Florida’s newest wish kid. As she stepped into the center of the arena, a retired thoroughbred, named Cos, with a big red bow tied around his neck was presented to her. The emotional moment was witnessed by family and friends as they celebrated her health and her beautiful stallion. “He’s like a big puppy dog. He’s really energetic and fun to ride,” said Madison White. “I can’t wait to do shows with him,

that’s what I really want to do.” For over three decades the organization has been bringing hope, strength, and joy to children who have life-threatening medical conditions. Wish kids most often ‘wish to be’ (something), ‘wish to meet’ (someone), ‘wish to go’ (somewhere), or ‘wish to have’ (something) and the nonprofit organization makes this happen for the child and his/her entire family at no cost or obligation to them. The Southern Florida chapter grants a wish every 16 hours, at an average cost of $5,000 each, for children in 13 Florida counties and the U.S. Virgin Islands. “The bond they are going to have, and the hope, and the joy that it brings to this family is what it’s all about,” said Greg Baty, Chair-Elect, Make-A-Wish Southern Florida. “We make wishes come true!” For more information on Make-A-Wish Southern Florida, please call 888-773-9474, or visit www.sfla.wish.org.

Markham Park Hosts the 3rd Annual Adaptive Sports & Recreation Expo COMMUNITY NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

pril was National Adaptive Sports Month, and to kick-off the celebration Memorial Regional Hospital South hosted the “3rd Annual Adaptive Sports and Recreation Expo” at Markham Park. The event was free and open to the public, and gave participants of all ages, and all abilities with disabilities a way to explore a variety of sports and recreational activities beneficial to the physical and mental health of those who have suffered strokes, lost use of limbs or are coping with traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries. Those who attended had a chance to try and watch wheelchair basketball, adaptive soccer, hand cycling, disk golf, fishing, adaptive sailing, adaptive scuba diving, and adaptive water skiing and remote control airplanes at the 666-acre Sunrise Park. “Our past two expos have had more than 300 participants,” said Ray Shipman, Manager of the Adaptive Sports and Recreation Program which is offered through Memorial Rehabilitation Institute at Memorial Regional Hospital South in Hollywood. “Our goal is to make sports and recreational activities available to all because there are no limitations to what our physically challenged community can accomplish.” The program connects physically disabled individuals with a wide range of adaptive sports and adaptive recreational activities, which have been modified or redesigned to fit patients’ unique needs and requirements. The program encourages former patients from physical rehabilitation programs and members of the community with physical disabilities to participate in a wide variety of adaptive sports.

Some of the participants have achieved athletic success. There are two wheelchair basketball teams, a Division I and II. One even earned an impressive runner-up finish in Division III of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Tournament last year. The relatively young teams, developed three years ago, are sponsored by the Memorial Hospital Rehabilitation Institute. “Adaptive sports provide numerous long-term therapeutic benefits in addition to enhancing quality of life and improving over health,” added Shipman. “These activities are not just fun but very important for people with disabilities to know that they can do anything they put their mind to.” For 33-year old Jason Brown who suffered a stroke nearly 4 years ago, it was a chance of a lifetime to get to scuba dive and sail. “He has been talking about coming to this for weeks now,” said his mother Yvette Johnson. I am so proud of my baby and can’t the hospital enough for making this available to him. He has always loved the water and until today, I never thought I would get to see him do something so enjoyable to him.” For more information about the Adaptive Sports Program and Memorial Rehabilitation Institute, call Ray Shipman at 954-5185573 or email rshipman@mhs.net.

Here’s The Dish…Meals on Wheels Partners with Chefs For Seniors BY BEVERLY PERKINS

M

eals on Wheels South Florida is excited to announce a partnership with Chefs For Seniors, an innovative service that places a professional chef in the home of a senior to prepare a week’s worth of customized, fresh meals. The partnership will provide funding for Meals on Wheels South Florida and a new

meal option for seniors in South Florida. The Plantation based private nonprofit organization has been providing hunger-relief services since 1985 thanks to its dedicated volunteers. Meals on Wheels serves more than 10,000 seniors and 5,000 children an estimated 1.5 million meals a year. The nutritious meals, friendly visits, and safety checks enable South Florida seniors to live nourished lives with independence and dignity. “We are pleased to partner with Chefs For Seniors on this new program to provide home cooked, customized meals to our local seniors,” said Mark Adler, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels South Florida. “Through this new partnership, we will be able to provide a new program allowing seniors to age with dignity in their own homes.” Chefs For Seniors, founded in Madison, Wisconsin, expanded its operations to Broward and Palm Beach counties in July 2016. The first-of-its-kind company places local professional chefs in seniors’ homes. They prepare customized and affordable meals for the week in the client’s home using the freshest ingredients,

while offering a fun and interactive experience. Chefs use their creativity to help select options that are both healthy and catered to individual tastes while meeting their dietary requirements. Never using pre-packaged meals, chefs cook everything fresh. Menus can be customized for low sodium, gluten free, diabetic, and any other dietary need. The chef remains the same, but the menus are always full of variety and flavor each week. “We’ve been able to help people in other communities for the last four years, and we’re excited to get started with Meals on Wheels South Florida. This partnership will allow both of our organizations to serve a wider demographic of people looking to maintain their independence and improve their well-being through proper nutrition,” says Chefs For Seniors co-founder Nathan Allman. A significant portion of all sales for Chefs For Seniors’ services through the pilot goes to support local Meals on Wheels programs. There’s Always Something to Smile About at Super Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics BY BEVERLY PERKINS

Dr. Buscemi and Dr. Maruri answered some commonly asked question about their practice.

What is the difference between a pediatric dentist and a family dentist? Pediatric dentists are the pediatricians of dentistry. Pediatric dentists are primary oral care providers which receive an additional two to three years of residency training beyond dental school making us specialists in treating infants and children through adolescence, including those with special needs.

How can parents help prevent tooth decay?

The first step is to not share bottles, utensils or anything that goes in your mouth with your child. When your child is born, their mouth is free of the tooth decay causing bacteria Mutans Streptococci (MS). Multiple studies have shown that infants are first inoculated with MS via mother-child transmission. While it is impossible to keep your child totally free of disease causing pathogens like MS, having a regimented hygiene and diet plan is the first place to start. Simple things such as not letting them fall asleep with a bottle and cleaning their teeth as soon as they erupt with gauze and water will greatly decrease their risk of getting tooth decay.

Do you offer laughing gas and sedation dentistry? Yes, part of

When should I first take my child to the dentist? The American Academy of Pediatric

Dentistry (AAPD) recommends that a child go to the dentist by age one or within six months after the first tooth erupts. The idea of such early dental visits is still surprising to many new parents. However, national studies have shown that preschool-aged children are getting more cavities. More than 1 in 4 children in the United States has had at least one cavity by the age of 4. Many kids get cavities as early as age 2. To prevent early childhood cavities, parents first have to find out their child’s risk of developing cavities. They also need to learn how to manage diet, hygiene and fluoride to prevent problems.

What should my child expect at his/her first dental visit? At your first dental visit, I (Dr.

Buscemi) will examine and clean your child’s teeth, but more importantly I get a chance to assess your child’s oral health and how to best care for their teeth before any problems may occur. We will discuss the best way for you to clean your child’s teeth, the proper way to use fluoride and oral habits such as finger and pacifier sucking. The main goal of the first dental visit is to make it a positive experience for the child so they perceive going to the dentist as fun as opposed to the negative reputation that going to the dentist has.

the specialty training that pediatric dentists receive is in pediatric analgesia. Though most children do very well with just behavioral management techniques, a child with uncontrollable body movements can be unsafe in a dental treatment room. The lightest and most common form of analgesia is nitrous oxide (laughing gas). Then the next level of sedation is conscious oral sedation, where oral sedatives along with nitrous oxide are used to make your child sleepy but still awake with the ability to respond when spoken too. If a child is extremely uncooperative and has a severe medical/dental condition, I have hospital privileges at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital where a pediatric anesthesiologist will provide the proper anesthesia.

change colors every time they come in for an adjustment. Our more aesthetically concerned patient can choose between ceramic braces, Invisalign™ and lingual braces (braces placed on the inside of the teeth).

FEATURE STORY

S

uper Smiles Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics offers comprehensive dental care for children ages one to 18, and orthodontics for children, adolescents and adults. The husband and wife team, Dr. Amanda Buscemi (pediatric dentist) and Dr. Michael Maruri (orthodontist), are both specialists in their respective fields. Their primary goal is to make a positive difference in the lives of children, adolescents, and adults by offering the highestquality dental care in a comfortable, relaxed and friendly environment.

Can adults get orthodontic treatment in your office? Absolutely, actually around 25 percent

of our orthodontic patients are adults. Adult orthodontics nationally has increased 14 percent from 2010 to 2012 according to a recent study by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). There are special considerations for adults such as periodontal disease and missing teeth that children usually do not have. Therefore, you will need good communication with your general dentist and orthodontist to make sure all aspects of your oral health are being addressed.

How often do I have to come in for orthodontic adjustments? The length of time

between braces adjustments for my patients is typically every 6-8 weeks. It is important to understand that the length of time between your orthodontic adjustments does not correspond with how fast your teeth are moving. Modern braces use wires that are a mixture of metals (alloys) originally designed by NASA for outer space. This combination of metals allows the wire to apply gentle forces for a long period of time. Unlike older stainless steel wires that typically had to be adjusted every month, modern alloy wires can be effective for several months.

When should my child be evaluated for orthodontic treatment? Traditionally, treatment

with dental braces begins when a child has lost most of his or her baby (primary) teeth, and a majority of his or her adult (permanent) teeth have grown in, this is usually between the ages of 10-14. However in circumstance where a malocclusion may hinder growth or orthopedic expansion of the jaws is needed, orthodontics may be started earlier. The American Association of Orthodontist (AAO) recommends getting your first orthodontic evaluation by age 7.

What types of braces do you offer? We offer four types of orthodontic appliances in our office. The majority of our younger patients choose traditional metal braces so they can

Jacaranda Lakes is Lucky to Have These Two Residents BY BEVERLY PERKINS

CAN DO KIDS

M

olly Touhy and Rebecca Hazin, Jacaranda Lakes residents, took it upon themselves to make their neighborhood a better place. Touhy, 10-years-old, moved into the neighborhood about 4 years ago while Hazin, also 10-years-old, has lived there most of her life. Since the two met a couple of years ago, they have been inseparable friends with similar interests. Pete Touhy, Molly’s dad describes them both as “Queens of DIY (Do It Yourself) Projects”. When not in school or doing homework, these two can be found

hard at work on numerous projects in and around their rooms, their houses, their backyards, and their neighborhood. The creative duo may be seen painting, blending, mixing, coloring, tie-dying, writing, singing, dancing, recording, and creating on a regular basis. Like most residents in the community, Molly and Rebecca take pride in the appearance of their neighborhood and enjoy having a safe, clean environment in which they can play, dream, and laugh. A couple of months ago Molly’s parents were taking a morning walk when they discovered that someone had littered their neighborhood with a countless amount of lottery entry forms. The abundance of forms were dumped at the entrance and made their way well into the neighborhood. Rebecca and Molly did not even hesitate. They grabbed some trash bags, jumped on their bicycles, and went to clean up the negligent mess of someone else. “We love our neighborhood and while out enjoying the sunshine and having fun, we noticed a problem and wanted to be part of the solution, said both girls. “People work hard to keep this neighborhood looking good and we want that to continue.” “The girls didn’t just shake their heads, they thought otherwise and took action,” said Pete Touhy. “It didn’t stop there as they went

into their local park down the street and took to cleaning that as well. Their collection was quite impressive, but their selfless act was even more remarkable.” The girls would like to start an organized neighborhood clean-up project and involve as many families, tweens, teens, and children who would like to participate. They also are planning on creating a missing dogs program where they reunite pups with their owners. Their goal is to encourage other kids to get involved, to put down their phones and video games, and to take interest in their neighborhoods and become active outdoors. There may have been no winners in the mess of lottery entry forms, but these parents certainly can be proud that they hit the jackpot with these two girls.

Advances in Mammography: Fighting Cancer in 3D Maria Artze, MD, a Cleveland Clinic Florida radiologist who specializes in breast imaging. “Having these various images reduces the challenge of seeing areas where tissues overlap, and so improves the radiologist’s ability to detect breast cancer.”

Maria Artze, MD

Regular screening mammograms, which create two-dimensional views of the breast, can reduce cancer death by 30 percent. But newer technology that creates threedimensional (3D) mammograms offers important advantages, including greater detection of breast cancers that cannot be seen using those traditional mammograms. In one study of almost 13,000 women, use of 3D mammograms resulted in a 40 percent increase in detection of invasive breast cancer. This new technology is available at both Cleveland Clinic Florida’s academic medical center in Weston, as well as the West Palm Beach location. The 3D mammogram is also called breast tomosynthesis. “Tomosynthesis gathers images of the breast from several different angles, to create a series that forms the 3D image,” says

The technology makes it possible for the first time for radiologists to see a 3D image of the breast. Because of the high level of detail it provides, the images also highlight masses and abnormalities that conventional mammograms might miss. “In images of the breast, dense tissue appears white, and cancer appears white,” says Cassann Blake, MD, Cleveland Clinic Florida breast surgeon. “Tomography gives us much more detail compared to other types of mammograms. Especially for women with dense breast tissue, this detail is important.” For the patient during the screening, the procedure will be familiar to other mammograms they’ve had. The only difference is that part of the equipment moves in an arc around the breast, instead of staying stationary. Studies also show that with tomosynthesis, fewer patients need to return for additional mammograms, visits that can cause stress and expense, plus exposure to additional radiation. Research further shows this procedure provides a 15 percent decrease in the number of “false positives,” where tissue looks cancerous but through biopsy (tissue

sample) or another exam is later found to be normal. So 3D mammograms can also help women avoid unnecessary biopsies. “Early detection of breast cancer is a key area that we want to highlight,” Dr. Blake says. “Offering the advantages of the 3D mammogram is part of our goal to provide our patients with the best quality of care. Talk to your doctor about whether a 3D mammogram is best for you.” For a consultation with a Cleveland Clinic Florida breast specialist, call 866.213.5789 or visit clevelandclinicflorida.org/breastcancer for more information.

Prenatal Nutrition BY JAY COHEN, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

ASK THE EXPERT

O

ver the last few decades the fields of obstetrics and nutrition have changed. This change has greatly affected prenatal nutrition recommendations. Nutrition in pregnancy couldn’t be more important, as it’s crucial for a number of reasons. The first is that good nutrition helps maintain maternal energy requirements. Secondly, it provides nourishment for development of new fetal tissues. Lastly, energy reserves build for postpartum lactation. The primary focus of prenatal nutrition is on weight gain and dietary intake in pregnancy. Diet: A baby’s birth weight is affected by maternal weight gain during pregnancy. Although, it is normal to gain weight throughout pregnancy, it is critical during the second trimester. Due to the metabolic demands of pregnancy, supplemental dietary intake is required to support the recommended weight gain. A normal pregnancy diet should be comprised of 30% fat, 50% carbohydrates, and 20% protein. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) in pregnancy is 60g, and most American diets contain more than enough protein. However, many proteins from animal sources are very high in fat, and may contribute to excessive weight gain if not monitored. A diet should be tailored to each individual based on height, weight, activity level and trimester of pregnancy. The new recommendations calculate the trimester specific needs. Prenatal Vitamin Supplements: Prenatal vitamins are not necessary for every patient. However, they are routinely prescribed to most patients due to the fact that a nutritionally compromised pregnancy may not be identified, and the benefits are tremendous. A standard prenatal vitamin formulation contains: ▸▸ Iron - 30 mg ▸▸ Zinc - 15 mg ▸▸ Calcium - 250 mg ▸▸ Vitamin B-6 - 2 mg ▸▸ Folate - 0.4 mg ▸▸ Vitamin C - 50 mg ▸▸ Vitamin D - 5 mcg Each formulation varies, but should be chosen on each individual’s specific needs. Typically, a normal well-balanced pregnancy diet will provide the RDA of all nutrients except elemental iron and folate, both which need to be supplemented. Mineral Trace Elements: Iron - An appropriate intake of iron is necessary since pregnancy can deplete iron stores. Premature birth and low birth weight have been linked to low iron levels in early pregnancy. The average requirement is 22mg/day, but some women need 27mg/day. Some women benefit from taking iron supplements if they are iron deficient, but it’s best to ask your doctor. Folate - The B vitamin is needed for the healthy growth and development of the unborn baby. During pregnancy, the requirements are increased. Adequate intake helps to also prevent birth defects such as spina bifida. Iodine – This mineral is essential to the production of thyroid hormones, which regulates body temperature, metabolic rate, reproduction, growth, blood cell production, and nerve and muscle function. Other important elements are Zinc, Calcium, Phosphorous, and Sodium. Speaking to your doctor about your specific needs are most important for a happy, healthy, and easy pregnancy.

3-2-1 Blast Off! Paladins Took Off With First Place in the Student Astronaut Challenge SCHOOL NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

S

chools from throughout Florida, Georgia and one as far as Ireland came to compete in the 2017 Student Astronaut Challenge at the Kennedy Space Center in Central Florida. South Plantation High School was victorious as they brought home first place. This was their second first place win since their first title in 2015. The Paladins have entered the competition six times and made it to the finals five of those times. The complex tournament has four components: Shuttle Simulator, Engineering, Lab, and Landing. South’s team placed second in the Simulator, second in Engineering, first in the Lab, fifth in the Landing, and first Overall. Team members included senior Michael Rogatinsky (Flight Engineer from Hollywood), senior Nick Schwab (Commander from Plantation), junior Juan Cabrera (Pilot from Fort Lauderdale), senior Regan Williams (Mission Control from Plantation), junior Parker Crooks (Mission Control from Plantation), and junior Joshua Hall (Hollywood). In the Shuttle Simulator Challenge students conducted prelaunch, launch, in orbit and landing checklists as well as land a shuttle simulator. They had to survive several mock emergencies including a major one in the semi-finals where the whole emergency panel turned red. “The hardest parts of the competition were the simulation semi-finals and finals because the emergencies the judges threw at us were something we never practiced,” said Regan Williams. “However, we dealt with them with ease.” In the Engineering Challenge, teams solved a problem

that consisted of determining which critical systems were needed during different phases of the landing of a space shuttle with limited power available. In the Lab Challenge students designed an experiment for growing food on Mars. Last year the Landing Challenge was introduced, so 2017 was the first time South’s team was tested on its landing abilities using the space shuttle simulator. “They showed an amazing ability to work as a team helping each other as needed,” said Katherine Boutin, the team’s teacher and coach. “I am really honored to work with such devoted and hardworking students. They practiced over Winter Break, after school and on the weekends for two months to prepare for this competition.” The judges asked Regan Williams to work with them next year since she is attending FSU in the fall as they are based in Tallahassee. “The best part of the competition was the experience of being at NASA as well as being ‘scouted’ to work with the competition next year,” said Williams who eventually wants an Air Force medical career specializing in neuroscience. South Plantation’s Environmental Science and Everglades Restoration magnet is celebrating its 15th anniversary this year. It is an all-county program dedicated to creating educated environmental stewards about preserving Florida’s natural resources for future generations.

Puppies – Providing a Lifetime of Health and Happiness

G

etting a puppy can be one of the most exciting times of your life! Following the initial euphoria of adopting your new furry friend, often the realization of the true responsibility of caring for this wonderful addition to the family can set in.

What Should I Do If I Recently Adopted A New Puppy?

If you have recently adopted a new puppy, it is ideal to schedule a first time visit with your veterinarian for a comprehensive physical examination. A rising trend that also has proven beneficial for most of our patients is acquiring pet insurance. This gives you the comfort to know that you can provide the best care possible for your pets without facing the sometimes extraordinary fees associated with unforeseen emergency treatments but also provides the added benefit of covering most of the costs of preventative and wellness care as well. Nationwide® and Trupanion®, among several other companies offer wellness and emergency pet insurance coverage.

Is My Puppy Protected Against Diseases?

Until the age of 8 weeks old, most puppies are utilizing the maternal antibodies that they have acquired from their mother to help provide some protection against disease. However, these antibodies do not provide lifelong coverage and our little friends are very susceptible to infectious disease. It is important to keep unvaccinated puppies away from other dogs outside of the home, especially those that are unvaccinated themselves, and until the full vaccine protocol has been completed.

What Is the Typical Vaccine Protocol For Puppies?

Compliant with AAHA (American Animal Hospital Association) Guidelines is the schedule that Lakeside Animal Hospital recommends for vaccinating your puppy to provide him/her with the best protections against commonly acquired diseases. ▸▸ 8 weeks : DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Parvo Virus) ▸▸ 11 weeks: DHPP booster and KCV (Kennel Cough Vaccine/Bordetella) ▸▸ 14 weeks: DHPP booster, KCV booster ▸▸ 16 weeks: DHPP booster and Rabies Vaccine

Extra Tips to Keeping Your Pet Safe

▸▸ Microchip your pet: Microchips provide the comfort that if your pet gets lost and is taken to an animal care facility (animal shelter or veterinarian), they will be scanned to retrieve the pet’s unique ID code. This information will be linked to your contact information to quickly help reunite you with your pet. Microchipping is a service provided by most veterinary facilities, and is included in our Pet Health Plan at Lakeside Animal Hospital. ▸▸ Familiarize yourself with common household toxins: Many household products consumed by humans can unfortunately be toxic to animals. Some common but often unrecognized toxins are found in grapes/raisins, chocolate, avocados, onions/garlic/chives and Xylitol (commonly found in sugar free gum). Visit ASPCA.org for a more comprehensive list. If your pet is exposed to these products, seek veterinary care immediately. ▸▸ Spay and Neuter: Aside from population control, spay and neuter provides many healthy benefits including, but not limited to, eliminating the risk of an infected uterus (pyometra), which can be fatal if untreated, decreasing the risk of mammary, ovarian, uterine and testicular cancer as well as some behavioral benefits. Lakeside Animal Hospital, “Where we know they’re not just pets…they are family.” Please contact the office at 954-4748808 to schedule a new puppy visit or annual wellness check-up for your dog or cat. They are located at 9601 W. Broward Blvd, Plantation, FL 33324, and can be found online at www.lakesideanimal.com.

“Spanky”

Spanky is a 6-year-old Parrotlet, the smallest of the New World parrot species. His favorite person is his human dad, Rick. He likes the view of the lake from his multi-level cage. However, he loves being out of it when he can sit on his human’s shoulder. His favorite pastime is talking. The inquisitive green Pacific pocket parrot loves to ask how everyone is doing, and requests kisses and music by the Spice Girls. He was last seen cuddling against his human while watching TV.

Dogosterone Therapy: Quality of Life Treatment for Geriatric Dogs BY DAVID S. BIEBER, DVM

D

ASK THE VET

ogosterone Therapy is advanced canine joint therapy. It mainly consists of Hormone Replacement in spayed and neutered dogs. We use this therapy in dogs that are having a hard time getting up, with illnesses such as arthritis, intervertebral disk disease (IVDD), hip dysplasia, muscle atrophy, and degenerative joint disease (DJD).

Hormone Replacement Therapy for Canines Dogosterone™ Therapy is the NEW option to improve your dog’s health. 95% success rate!

If your dog is SUFFERING from:

Muscle Atrophy

Arthritis Hip Dysplasia Degenerative Joint Disease Intervertebral Disc Disease

How It Works

Spayed and neutered dogs have a testosterone level of basically zero (<0.1mg/ml). We have found that as dogs get older, their muscle tone and bone density decreases, leading to one of the diseases

mentioned above. By using Dogosterone Therapy, we increase the testosterone level to normal levels, giving dogs an increase in muscle tone and bone density, which alleviates and/or helps a great deal in these illnesses. It gives the dogs being treated a much better quality of life in their later years.

How It All Started

It was the state of my own chocolate Labrador, Bruno, which prompted me to investigate the living conditions of geriatric dogs. In 2008, Bruno was 11 years old and became paralyzed in both rear legs due to chronic intervertebral disk disease, resulting in both of his cervical (neck) and lumbar (lower back) disk herniations. My family and I decided to get a wheel chair for Bruno. Since Bruno was neutered, I thought he had no muscle tone or bone density. At that point, I was desperate and decided to try Dogosterone Treatment on Bruno Bieber Bruno. Five months later, he was walking all by himself. He continued to walk on his own for another four years, until he naturally died of chronic renal failure.

Success Rate

I have been treating over 100 dogs now using Dogosterone Therapy. The success rate is 95% with no side effects! All canines benefit from this treatment. You can see some testimonials by visiting www.dogosterone.com

FCF was founded by Plantation resident Howard Talenfeld, the Managing Partner of Talenfeld Law. The event raised more than $100,000, which will be used by the organization to help vulnerable children around the state.
