New Year Brings New Beginnings
N
ew Year’s Day serves as a point in time for many of us to make a change; our New Year’s Resolutions. These resolutions, big and small, can be a helpful way for people to motivate themselves to improve their lives in a positive way. Like many people, our New Year’s Resolutions are focused on living healthier lives: we want to exercise more, eat healthier, and sleep better. To achieve these goals, we must develop new healthy habits. William James, a turn-of-the-century psychologist, was one of the first researchers to study habit forming. He discovered three keys to establishing a new habit: (i) Creating an environment to reinforce the behavior you are seeking; (ii) Sticking to the new routine until the habit is fully formed; (iii) Acting now, without delay. For our resolution to get healthy, we have dedicated Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings to working out. We have pledged to make sure we don’t miss a day, at least for the first two months of the year. If you have a New Year’s Resolution, block out the time, don’t let anyone or anything interfere with your focus, and, in the words of the Nike slogan, Just do it! Wishing you a Happy & Healthy New Year! Sincerely,

pend a beautiful South Florida Sunday morning or afternoon among fruit and vegetable farmers and specialty food producers at the bi-monthly farmer’s market. The City of Aventura kicked off their 2016-2017 Green Market at the annual Founder’s Day celebration in November. The Aventura Green Market was created to foster community and support local businesses. The Aventura Green Market will be held twice a month through April and will feature artisan bakers, jelly & jam makers, oil & vinegar mixologists, fresh produce, juices, nut butters, honey, plants, crafts, and so much more. New vendors will be added to the event each time with an expectancy of over thirty. “SeaStar Event Planning is very excited to be bringing a Gourmet Green Market to the residents of the City of Aventura. There will be 30-40 local gourmet artisans each Sunday at the market from 9-2:30pm offering samplings of their products, says Colleen Sullivan, SeaStar Event Producer. “We are excited to show the residents that they have an option to buy local in season fruits and vegetables right in their backyard.” Residents are encouraged to shop local, and Aventura’s market promotes all South Florida businesses who make and produce their products in the area. From Dutch waffles and crepes to avocado smoothies and paella, these are just some of the vendors who will be selling their goods during the season: Johnnie and Benny’s Produce Stand, Urban Desserts, Easy Juice, 7 Seas

ventura residents KT Merry and Charles Keffer developed a new initiative by combining their passions of animals, art and photography. The project, entitled Render Loyalty, strives to raise awareness about the plight of threatened wildlife through exquisite photographs and financially support the conservation work through the sales of the artwork. KT Merry always had a passion for animals and conservation her entire life, long before officially becoming a photographer. Prior to making her dream a reality, Merry was a destination wedding photographer

for 10 years. During this time she still longed to make a difference in the world of conservation and knew that “someday” she perhaps would. However, as time went by she realized that magnificent species were being lost now and she wasn’t going to wait another day. She had to do something right away, and she did. Merry enlisted the support of her husband, Charles Keffer, and together they researched leaders in conservation as well as organizations who are actively saving species every day. Ultimately, they formed a partnership with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust and Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in Kenya, Africa. ventura’s very own, Marsha Feldman was recently crowned Ms. United States Ambassador Queen 2017 in the National Woman of Achievement pageant on board the historical Queen Mary in California. Feldman is no stranger to receiving outstanding recognition as her previous titles include Mrs. Aventura International 2015, Mrs. Aventura Woman of Achievement 2016 and Mrs. Florida Woman of Achievement 2016. “Woman of Achievement is all about showcasing your accomplishments as well as inspiring and empowering others for all to succeed, says Feldman. “It brings me great joy to utilize my leadership and passions to give back to my community and help charities and causes.” Woman of Achievement is a unique women’s awards event & pageant designed for women of all ages to showcase their creative talents, public speaking, community service and various other charitable endeavors in their local communities. “It’s all about beauty, achievement, and giving back. These qualities do not have an age limit,” says National Director Marlena Martin. “Our contestants are volunteers, mothers, mentors, and start up entrepreneurs who have much to offer in the business world, their families and are chosen for how they are enriching their local communities.” Feldman leads through example with her platform, encouraging others to empower their passion by taking it to the next level in order to help charities and worthy causes. She has utilized her passion for running by participating and support-
ing over 140 charity races, and has earned over 100 medals in South Florida. As a local running champion, she promotes and supports the American Heart Association’s ‘Life’s Simple Seven’ guidelines and assists people in wanting to transition their lives to a healthier lifestyle. As President of the Aventura chapter’s National Association of Professional Women (NAPW) organization, Feldman volunteers her time empowering women and the local business community. One of her key tasks is reaching out to the local business community to promote business relations with the members of NAPW. Whenever possible, she incorporates charity fundraisers within these events. Always driven to take things to higher standards, her motto is to create opportunities from great, to grand, to extraordinary for all involved to benefit. Additionally, she has empowered her runway modeling experience by wearing local designer’s fashions in over a half dozen charity events. Her goal is to continue to promote and support causes that incorporate her modeling, running, and Woman of Achievement honors. This year, she has recently been published in several local magazines and plans to expand her writings and publications nationally. For more information on booking Marsha to speak or support her at the Woman of Achievement program in general may contact the program at: www.womanofachievement.com or by calling the corporate office at (520) 333-7140. Fox Vein & Laser Experts blood to pool in the ankles and pain and heaviness and swelling in the legs that worsens at the end of the day, after travelling or standing. Over time, the ankles start to get more and more veins. The legs get more painful, swollen and bulging veins appear. Discoloration appears in the ankles and skin changes in the ankles and feet develop. As time goes on skin changes may worsen and the person may develop venous eczema, scarring called lipodermatosclerosis and open sores or ulcers. People may have bleeding veins that are hard to stop.
What should people do about vein disease?
Patients with symptoms should come see us and have an ultrasound to diagnose their specific vein problems. In the meantime, the person should elevate their legs, wear compression hose and take anti-inflammatories for discomfort.
Why should people remove tattoos?
Approximately 25-30% of people in the United States have tattoos. At any given time, around a quarter of them are looking into tattoo removal. Men remove them more than women, usually for their profession and to move up the corporate ladder. Many jobs will not employ someone or move them up to management with visible tattoos. Governmental jobs, military, police and others do not want tattoos in visible areas. As well, some people put their significant others name on them. Some people just change stages in their life and the tattoos are no longer a part of who they are. Some people want room for more ink. Whatever the reason, Picoway is the best tattoo removal laser. It removes all colors of ink faster using pico technology. It works better and with less pain and fewer treatment sessions than other lasers.

Aventura Waterways STEM Integrated Academy is Out of this World
SCHOOL NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he STEM Integrated Academy at Aventura Waterways K8 has been open for three years now. Their program consists of exciting subjects which vary for each grade. 6th Grade studies Astronomy and Go Green (Environmental Science), 7th Grade learns Let’s Rock (Earth Space Science) and Marine Conservation, while 8th Grade focuses on a Life Science Lab. These classes integrate various aspects of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) in their respective curriculums. Currently, the 105 students enrolled at the Academy are able to design and engineer space vehicles, build bridges at a scale model, design vertical planters for their school, build and program VEX IQ robots, and so much more. Besides all this, they are able to participate in competitions, take field trips locally and out-of-state, and help non-profit environmental organizations. The hands-on experience these students receive outside of the classroom is a valuable contribution to what they have learned inside the classroom. For instance, the award-winning students have been able to
help the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) advance space plant science for humans by planting vegetables and collecting data in the Fairchild Challenge, Growing Beyond Earth. They participate in beach clean ups and tree plantings, as well as kayak at Oleta River State Park to acquire knowledge about the local ecosystem. Additionally, they have traveled to Chicago and San Francisco to learn more about computer and space science and marine conservation. The Academy also strives to reduce the school’s environmental footprint, so they encourage a school-wide recycling program. The sixth grade class designed recycled furniture out of cardboard and created signage reminding others to turn off lights and be environmentally conscious. They will also build their own sustainable city at the Coral Gables Museum. “Overall, even though it might seem like a lot of science, we include the other parts of STEM in the various lessons and projects that the students complete,” says Melissa Macko, Aventura Waterways Science Department Chair, STEM Integrated Academy Teacher, Physical Science Honors Teacher and 8th Grade Advanced Science Teacher. “All the teachers of the STEM Academy help the students to become critical thinkers and to think outside of the box. This academy opens up the students’ minds to many career possibilities that they might not have thought of and it helps them to think of ways they can help change the world even if it just starts with them.” Aventura Waterways Preparatory Academy is located at 750 Ives Dairy Road, Miami. The Victory Center Breaks Ground on New School Building BY BEVERLY PERKINS
T
he Victory Center, which educates children with Autism and related developmental disabilities, broke ground on a brand new 8,500 square foot school in November. The construction of the new facility will allow the center to expand its capacity and serve many more children and their families in South Florida. The nonprofit Victory Center was founded in 2000 by Barry and Judi Nelson, the parents of a child with Autism who found themselves frustrated by the lack of appropriate educational opportunities. “We looked at every option available for our son at the time, but there was no school in South Florida to get him the level of education we were looking for,” said Barry Nelson, an attorney and member of the center’s board of directors. After trying public and private schools, the Nelsons found the only effective program was something called Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) with an intensive teacher to student ratio. With the encouragement of Dr. Michael Alessandri, Executive Director of the University of Miami Center for Autism and Related Disabilities, the Nelson’s launched The Victory Center with just four students. Now, 17 years later, the school is at capacity with 30 full-time students ranging in age from 3 to 22, with varying degrees of autism and related disabilities. Students come from both Miami-Dade and Broward Counties. With expected completion in 2018, the new school will have a 60-student capacity, doubling the center’s capacity. “Our new building will have more opportunities to expand and improve programs for children with developmental disabilities,” said Victory Center CEO Raquel Prancer. “We are excited to watch the construction of our new home and cannot wait for completion.” The new school will offer state-of-the-art facilities such as a conference room for

parent training and education planning meetings, a sensory room for children to play and relax, an outdoor playground for children to socialize and acquire motor planning and coordination skills, as well as a life skills and vocational training room for students to practice daily living and employment skills. A multimedia room will provide opportunities for students to acquire and master technology skills related to computing and gaming. The Victory Center offers evidence-based intervention using the principles of (ABA) in a unique community setting. Within a few months of individualized treatment for new students, teachers and therapists tend to see educational, social and behavioral improvement. Supporters of The Victory Center raised more than $3 million from individual donors, foundations and local corporations to build the new facility. Some of the key donors were the Batchelor Foundation and the Anthony Abraham Foundation. . Since its beginning, The Victory Center has worked out of a handful of rooms on the campus of the Michael-Ann Russell JCC in North Miami Beach. The new school will remain on the property and is being built jointly with the JCC. “The JCC presented The Victory Center with an enormous opportunity and challenge; partner in a new building which will require a significant financial obligation,” said David Barnett, Chairman of the Board. “We are forever grateful to them and all of our supporters who share our vision and dream, further impacting the community in a positive way.” For more information please contact Raquel Prancer CEO, rpancer@thevictoryschool.org, 305-466-1142.

Scheck Hillel Community School is Feeling Zen
SCHOOL NEWS
BY BEVERLY PERKINS

S
check Hillel Community School recently introduced yoga to its ECE curriculum this past fall. The program came about by the efforts of first grade teacher Leanne Weinbrot. The educator and yoga enthusiast always introduced simple yoga practice to her students as a way to relax, stretch and take a break from the rigorous school day. Weinbrot noticed that this practice improved concentration and behavior in the classroom. With support from the children, teachers and administrators, yoga storytelling has been implemented in the program as a way to deepen and reinforce pre-literacy skills in Early Childhood students. It coincides with Scheck Hillel’s approach to individualized education as it nurtures learners in mind, body and spirit. Currently, the program is taught by Weinbrot to children ages 3 and 4 years old. The class is now available as an after school program for kindergarten and first graders. The students begin their 30 minute yoga adventure in a peaceful setting which uses aromatherapy and soft lighting. They then proceed to start the class in a seated position where they greet each other and then they end the class in a relaxation pose where they can reflect and think about the story in different ways. The class combines yoga, literacy and storytelling. Students are encouraged to join along on an imaginative yoga adventure that takes them through a series of

yoga poses connected to a story. Such instructional activity helps the students visualize the story, resulting in strong comprehension. Plus, they obtain the physical and mental health benefits of yoga as a form of exercise as well as important character traits such as: determination, positivity, independent thinking, courage, and confidence. “With this program, the children are connecting pre-literacy skills with kinesiology and creativity. Those connections really help them not only to understand the story, but also to visualize it and take it with them,” said Dr. Monica Wagenberg, Head of Scheck Hillel’s Juda and Maria Diener Lower School. The benefits of the yoga program extend into learning throughout the day, beyond the actual yoga sessions. Research shows that yoga increases concentration and focus. Combining yoga with storytelling imparts pre-literacy skills for individual learning styles, sparks imagination and develops confidence. “Time and time again the benefits of yoga in the classroom are enthusiastically supported by many teachers and schools,” says Weinbrot. “Studies have shown that yoga in the classroom can improve a child’s overall physical, emotional, social and mental well- being.” For more information on yoga storytelling, please visit Scheck Hillel Community School at eHillel.org.

ASK THE EXPERT
C
hoosing the school that is best for your child is one of the most important decisions we make as parents. School becomes a family’s second home, as children spend most of their day on campus. Your first step is to visit a prospective school. Spend time walking the halls. Do you feel a positive energy among the students and teachers? Do they seem motivated and happy? Talk to students when you visit, and ask them what they like about their school. If you feel the enthusiasm in their answers, they are happy. Happy students are successful students. Observe the culture and social climate, and form your own opinion. Prioritize you child’s needs, and see if you can picture him/her in this environment. The school’s approach to learning should focus on the individual child, guided by a forward-thinking philosophy to maximize opportunity and foster identity. You should see students and teachers engaged with one another. Their relationships should feel warm and safe. Teachers should be hands-on: walking students through a lesson, in the cafeteria having a conversation with a student or facilitating a club as an advisor. They should be sparking imagination, creativity and innovation: in a lab or class, in stage wings or on sidelines. When you visit, try to meet a guidance counselor, teachers and a member of leadership. Remember they will spend more hours of the day with your child than you will, throughout the years ahead. There are some specific elements to look for in preschool and elementary grades. Early years are about learning through play so classroom centers (from art to science), a nice, safe playground, recess and physical education are a must. Young children are discovering language, and soaking up every word! There should be books and libraries in classrooms for children to turn the pages of new chapters, cultivating personal and academic growth. When looking at middle and high school, focus on teacher engagement and the school’s academic track record. Are teachers regularly available for students before, during and after school? Are they involved with student life? Are the extra-curricular activities of interest to your child? Enrichment offerings should include many opportunities. Ask about their record over a period of years for SATs, ACTs, AP exams and achievements in academics like AP Scholar Awards and the National Merit Scholars Program, as well as accomplishments in arts, athletics, community service and leadership. Get a feel for their approach to college counseling; an understanding of students’ needs and interests should be paired with counselors’ knowledge and expertise. Most of all, one of the best ways to learn about a school is to have your child spend a day there while school is in session. Your child’s thoughts and feelings are of utmost importance and should come first. Not every school is for every child. Look for the school that best fits your child’s and family’s needs, interests and expectations. Follow your instinct, and go with your gut. You’ll know when you’ve come home.

s we start the new calendar year, I am happy to report: Promises made, promises kept in 2016. We delivered on 13 of 13 major, top-priority goals set for the year, a huge winning streak that propelled our City forward in giant strides. We made significant advances in parks and events, police and safety, public works and beautification, code compliance, financial reserves and city personnel. In fact, NMB is now being recognized by other cities statewide as a model for how good government can radically transform an older city and improve the quality of life for its residents
and businesses. Most recently, our voters overwhelmingly approved a brand new City Charter. This historic event replaced a massive jumble of outdated and contradictory laws with a clean, simple and modern Charter that brings us into the 21st century. Here is just one example of the benefits: Our city elections will now be held in November, saving taxpayers over $100,000 per election while also massively increasing voter participation. In 2017 we will focus on: ▸▸ Creating the best parks, with activities for young and old alike. ▸▸ E nhanced and innovative policing, to keep our citizens and their families safe. ▸▸ D elivering efficiency and excellence in all of our municipal services. ▸▸ Keeping NMB’s fiscal house in order, with strong cash reserves and lower taxes. ▸▸ B eautifying every neighborhood and thoroughfare in our City. ▸▸ A ttracting the very best in shopping, dining and entertainment to our City.

BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM
E
very January 1st, roughly one in three Americans make New Year’s resolutions to re-evaluate some of their life choices. Indeed, as individuals, we take great pleasure into making them, but they are difficult to maintain. This year, among some worthy resolutions such as, lose weight, stay fit and healthy, quit smoking, cut back on alcohol, enjoy life to the fullest, cut your stress, get more sleep, travel, attempt to also include making some crime prevention resolutions that are just as important to your safety, security and well-being for 2017. Even though the year 2017 will bring some of the same challenges as 2016, the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) encourages you to consider the idea of a “fresh start” in a good way to make life-saving crime prevention resolutions. Below are some pointers on how to make these safety resolutions stick: KEEP PERSPECTIVE: Crime prevention is everyone’s business and involves taking some simple steps to prevent crime such as burglary. Therefore, do not make your home an easy prey to burglar. Ensure that windows and doors are locked in order to prevent opportunities for burglaries. RECRUIT SUPPORT: Become familiar with the different programs and services that the Crime Prevention Unit of the NMBPD has to offer. Share your safe neighborhood goals with others because safer homes and neighborhoods happen when people in the communities are connected with each other. BE REALISTIC: Assess your home with these few steps: (1) close your curtains at night so that others cannot window shop or “peep” through; (2) assure that you have sufficient lighting by leaving your porch lights on at night and possibly placing motion lights around the corners of your residence; (3) record and register your valuables by keeping track of the serial numbers of select items, marking your valuables, taking photographs of items and jewelry; and (4) protect your identity against fraudsters and scammers by not giving them your personal information AT ALL. DO NOT DRINK, TEXT AND DRIVE: Fun times can easily turn into tragedy when someone decides to drive while he/she is impaired. It is imperative to save your life and/or the life of another person by driving sober! MAKE YOUR RESOLUTION CONCRETE: Resolve to stay alert while applying my situational awareness ability wherever I am. Also, resolve to avoid making your vehicle a target; therefore, take the necessary precautions regarding your vehicle by remembering to “Park Smart, to Lock, to Take, to Hide”. The NMBPD wishes you a Happy New Year during which time you resolve to be alert, be secure, be informed, be a good neighbor and report any suspicious activity by calling the NMBPD at (305) 949-5500.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
Scheck Hillel Community School Offers Students Much More Than a Great Education BY BEVERLY PERKINS
S
check Hillel Community School, one of the world’s largest Jewish community day schools, has been serving the North Miami community for over 4 decades. The enrollment of 1,086 students from 18 months - grade 12 representing 20 countries make up the demographic diversity at the school. Since it opened its doors in 1970, students from the early childhood program through high school receive not just the best education, but inspiration to become exemplary global citizens with enduring Jewish identity and values.
The National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence sits on 14 acres and includes a new 115,000 square foot athletic complex with additional academic expansion plans. Dr. Ezra Levy, Head of School at Scheck Hillel Community School, took the time to share a bit more information about his award-winning campus.
Please tell us about your education philosophy and how it differentiates from other schools. Scheck Hillel tailors education for a personal-
ized, rigorous college preparatory experience. Students develop identity, nurture talent, discover passion and find purpose as our rising generation of creators, innovators and leaders. We modernize the question of ‘What do I want to be when I grow up?’ to “Who do I want to be?” empowering students to become reflective global citizens with enduring identity and values.
What special programs and courses does the school offer? At this
time, we offer 20 AP and college-level courses. In addition to individualized college counseling for grades 8-12, we have a College Readiness Program, Florida International University Dual Enrollment, Capstone Senior Seminar, iLab and STEM curriculum for all ages, coding in Lower School grades, and much more.
What other accomplishments are you most proud of? Our students
and faculty have made significant achievements and have received a variety of prestigious awards, starting with our National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence title. Last year, 8 seniors were recognized by the National Merit Scholars & National Hispanic Recognition programs, the Class of 2016 received 200+ college acceptances, our Middle School won the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology Day School STEM Challenge, 100+ students qualified for national arts honor societies and participated in our after-school arts program, and our men’s soccer team won the State Soccer Championship. Even more meaningful, 30,000+ hours of community service are conducted by our students every year. Our community is strong. So many of our parents and faculty and staff members have come back home as alumni. Most of all, I am proud of how our students, parents and faculty come together to forge the kind of nurturing family-school partnership that builds Jewish future through our children’s success. We really are more than your child’s school; we are your family’s community. For more information, please visit the website at www.eHillel.org and/or the campus, which is located at 19000 NE 25th Avenue, North Miami Beach, 33180 or call 305-931-2831.
