Yoga in the Park – The City of Aventura will be offering free yoga classes from 9:00am-10:00am at Founders Park on Fridays (January 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th.) Yoga mats will be provided if necessary, but students may bring their own mat, a small towel and water for convenience. Registration is not required, and classes are open to all. Residents are encouraged to obtain a park ID prior to attending class in order to expedite access to the park. The Cities of Aventura and NMB Salute and Honor Veterans BY BEVERLY PERKINS

he month of November traditionally symbolizes gratitude. In addition to Thanksgiving, another important day to give thanks is Veterans Day. The City of Aventura and the City of North Miami Beach did just so by celebrating, remembering, and saluting those serving and those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. In Aventura, the significant day started at the Aventura Government Center with a ceremony featuring personal reflections from local veterans, patriotic performances by Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES), a World War II display, and participation from local veterans’ groups. Mayor Enid Weisman was in attendance along with numerous other city officials, the Aventura Police Department, United States Servicemen from the United States Army, Army Reserve, and Navy. Veterans and soldiers visited ACES Middle school to speak with the students before an incredible program filled with presentations, remarks, and songs

honoring the day. JROTC Cadets from Dr. Michael Krop Senior High also participated. The beautiful ceremony concluded with ACES Patriettes Chorus singing “God Bless America”. “It is an honor for my family and I to serve and also be part of such a wonderful community,” said Lieutenant Commander Dawn Prebula, United States Coast Guard. The City of North Miami Beach hosted their free community service at All Wars Memorial Park where they honored nine veterans with Veterans Hall of Fame medallions. One of the veterans honored was 96-year-old Nunzio “The Barron” Capizzi who served during WWII. Dante Cooper attended on behalf of Florida Rep. Barbara Watson and presented Capizzi with an American flag that withstood Hurricane Irma which was extremely symbolic. Veteran John Petroske, who is a loyal attendee of the city’s Memorial & Veterans Day Services, sang “My Buddy” by Frank Sinatra. He dedicated the song to one of his colleagues who lost his life serving our country. Chen Senior Medical Center provided bottles of water to the attendees, while the Parks & REC Dept. provided refreshments.

Let There Be Light – Annual Tree Lighting Shines Bright BY BEVERLY PERKINS

t was beginning to feel a lot like Christmas at the start of the 2017 holiday season in the City of North Miami Beach (NMB). All residents were invited to the annual “NMB Tree Lighting Ceremony” in front of City Hall on November 30th. Everyone was in the spirit as they came dressed in festive holiday colors. They gathered around the unlit tree excited for the evening festivities. Residents were welcomed by City Manager Ana M. Garcia, and Mayor George Vallejo followed by introducing the City Commission and dignitaries. Also in attendance was Christopher Taylor on behalf of Miami Dade County Commissioner Sally Heyman. The ceremony began with 100 children in the Parks & R.E.C. After School Program dressed in red and green, wearing elf and reindeer hats singing, “Here

Comes Santa Claus.” As they sang, the jolly big man in the red suit came down the street to meet the crowd in the bucket of a bucket truck. The excitement was in the air as young ones were delighted to see him lifted to the very top of the tree as he lit it. “The NMB Tree Lighting Ceremony kicked off the festive holiday season, spreading cheer and joy, to all those that join us for this very special community

event,” said City Manager Ana M. Garcia. Attendees of all ages were mesmerized by the beautiful lights on the gigantic tree. The children were anxious to meet Santa as he was lowered to the ground. Other activities after the tree lighting included Christmas carols performed by the NMB Library Kids Choir and singer Shanteria Gourdet, light refreshments, holiday arts and crafts and story time.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patient’s once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, fine needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. NMB Students Explore H2O Careers at a STEM Workshop BY BEVERLY PERKINS

orth Miami Beach (NMB) High School students had the opportunity to explore engineering jobs at a CH2M and NMB Water workshop. The focus of the community event was on STEM (Science, Technology. Engineering, and Math) skills and principles. Students were taught the purpose of these important subjects and how they relate and are needed to pursue their future careers. The workshop was held at the Administration Building of the Norwood Water Treatment Plant (WTP) as part of a NMB Water/CH2M Enlace community outreach partnership. CH2M delivers an integrated program for engineering, operations and maintenance, and progressive design-build to achieve a best-in-class water/wastewater utility for NMB Water. Carlos Carrazana, Plant Operator; Paula Silva, current Enlace chair; and Juan F. Aceituno and Pilar Doran with CH2M welcomed the thirteen 9th, 10th, and 11th grade students who were joined with Vania Boeva, NMB High School Head of the Science Department, and Joshua Montalvan, NMB High School Advanced Placement Chemistry Teacher. The workshop included presentations about the different engineering disciplines and how it takes a team to design and construct projects such as the Norwood WTP. Cristina Ortega-Castineiras shared with the students in an

interactive discussion the science and engineering behind their drinking water and how it is treated and delivered to the city’s homes and businesses. After learning that their water comes from the Biscayne and Floridan aquifers, Ortega-Castineiras introduced the students to membrane treatment technology while seeing a sample membrane element. The students’ curiosity was reflected in their questions wanting to learn more about sea level rise and impact to coastal communities such a North Miami Beach. “This first STEM event provided students with the chance to interact with the plant operator and participate in one-on-one mentoring with CH2M’s engineers,” said CH2M Senior Project Manager Juan F. Aceituno, P.E. “Students were very interested in talking about their careers and future in engineering. To me, this was the best part of the event, because I could see their interest and excitement grow as they learned more about how to become an engineer.” Carlos Carrazana then led a tour of the plant’s main control room where students could see the main control screens while interacting with Enlace members. The workshop concluded with a fun speed-mentoring session with the Enlace team to discuss career opportunities and the importance of a college education in their future. All students received community service hours for their active participation in the 3-hour STEM workshop.

a sense of moral character that encourage them to demonstrate empathy,” says Ms. Alm. “The upstander bench provides a means for students to reach out to peers and ensure they feel included.” The bench was installed on the playground near the basketball courts. Claudio Roncoli, a local Wynwood artist, painted the bench. The Argentinian born artist loves to use vibrant colors and balance in his artwork. He used the concept “Be a Hero, Be an Upstander!” to develop the colorful design. The star is meant to represent people, as many superheroes wear stars on their uniforms, and the heart is the universal symbol of love. The geometric rainbow ascends like an abstract tree with branches that bend, like arms hugging around someone. “I believe that calling someone a ‘hero’ is a contemporary concept that students can relate to and apply to real life,” Roncoli says. “Not everyone has the courage to help someone in need, so I think it is wonderful to say, ‘Help someone, be a hero!’”

hat happens when the Aventura Marketing Council/Chamber of Commerce (AMC) invites four other Chambers of Commerce to partner together along with Hotwire Communications and CooLAM Productions at the Newport Beachside Hotel? The answer… a jumbo Business Expo with astonishing attendance, an abundance of exhibitors, superior networking, great food, top speed internet, raffles, and unbelievable music and entertainment! AMC coordinated everything, and included the Hollywood Chamber, the North Miami Beach Chamber, the North Miami Chamber and the Sunny Isles Beach Tourism & Marketing Council to participate in the one-on-one networking event. Over 150 business guests came to explore and view the exhibits provided by the five organizations at the Sunny Isles

Beach property. The Newport team, consisting of General Manager Jon Kranock, Director of Catering & Group Sales Barry Rubin, Senior Catering Manager Maria Medina, Director of Travel Industry Sales Giovanna Bello, Sales Manager Stephanie Paz, Conference Services Manager Angie Solis and Food & Beverage Manager Vladimir Michelle, worked closely with the AMC to arrange everything from valet parking to tables and linen deliveries. John Maddalena, Managing Partner of the Beach Bar on the Newport Pier, provided and served delicious hors d’oeuvres that everyone enjoyed. Each exhibitor had a door prize to raffle, and the hotel provided a grand prize of a weekend at the Newport Beachside Hotel including dinner for two at their acclaimed Kitchen 305, and a spa package for the Aveda Seven Seas Spa & Salon.

It’s “Full STEAM Ahead!” at Aventura Waterways K-8 Center BY BEVERLY PERKINS

ventura Waterways K-8 Center (AWK8) had its first annual STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) Night last month. The theme of the evening was “Hands On, Mind On.” Science fair projects from grades 3 - 8 were displayed along with mousetrap cars for the SECME Competition. Additionally, bridges created by 7th and 8th grade students from the STEAM and International Finance Academy (IFA) were tested which appeared to be the highlight of the evening. Parents and their children gathered around Mr. L. Escudero as he measured the bridges and tested how much weight they could hold. “The bridge weighing challenge was the best. Some of the kids got really creative,” said Deniece Kayghobadi, parent of a 7th grade STEAM student who built a bridge.

A variety of stations were set up for students and parents to visit, experiment, and explore. These included activities such as: Estimation Station, Paper Plate Maze, Static Electricity, Upcycling Art, Musical Petting Zoo, Shaving Cream Name Tag, Paper Flyer, Catapult, Paper Column Tower, and Straw Rockets. Each was designed to teach the many STEAM lessons in a fun, but educational way. “It was great to experience science in such a handson way, and to celebrate the hard work of the students,” said Melissa Macko, AWK8 Science Teacher and STEAM Academy Teacher. “Parents were all impressed by how much fun they had as they were able to experience science in a whole new light. All of the activities were enjoyable and engaging.” The evening would not be possible without the hard work and dedication of the many teachers, committee leaders, and student volunteers. Awards were given out to students who will have their science fair projects entered into

the Miami Dade Regional Science Fair in February. “The night was filled with an electrical current of discovery and excitement,” exclaimed Mrs. I. Robles, AWK8 Assistant Principal. “We are definitely looking forward to the next AWK8 STEAM Night. We are thankful for Our Principal Mr. Bello supporting the event and to Mrs. I. Robles, our assistant principal, who supervised the night,” added Macko.

he first response to a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is usually, “What in the world is that?” Although it’s strange sounding, there are more than 200,000 US cases per year. Unlike typical back pain which is caused by some type of trauma to the spine, AS is a chronic condition caused by inflammation of the vertebrae. The inflammatory arthritis affects the spine and large joints making it a form of spinal arthritis. In advanced and more severe cases, abnormal bone growth in the spine may cause the joints to fuse together resulting in an inflexible spine reducing mobility. The good news is that it can be treated by a medical professional. The condition usually begins in early adulthood, in the late teens, and has been more prevalent in men, but women are susceptible to it just the same. However, AS can still develop at any age. It’s been known to be an inherited disease although not everyone with the gene will ever develop it. Symptoms always include pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. Spondylitis often starts at the sacrum (the lowest part of the spine). Pain in the back and joints are also common along with intermittent flare-ups of spinal pain. It could be mild or severe, and eventually lead to a hunched over posture. Unfortunately, the disease can also affect other ligaments and tendons, as well as the eyes and intestines. Some patients experience vision problems, and inflammation in the knees, ankles, and beneath the heel. Fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite may also occur. Typical warning signs of the disease are: ▸▸ Unexplained lower back pain for no apparent reason ▸▸ Unexplained tightness in the chest, pain in heel, and joints ▸▸ Pain comes and goes, but significantly is getting worse up the spine ▸▸ Temporary relief from over-thecounter medications ▸▸ Family history of AS Nonetheless, early intervention and treatment can help control pain and stiffness, and may reduce or prevent deformity. A physician cannot give a single test to diagnose AS, but an extremely detailed exam and patient history will help determine the diagnosis. The physician may also order imaging tests such as an MRI, or x-ray. Treatment includes medication, physical therapy, and in rare cases surgery. Remember, it’s always important to not ignore symptoms. Make an appointment to see a physician as soon as any signs exist.

Now that the cheer and festivities are over we need something to look forward to. Let’s make sure that we take time to recover so that we can make “Safety” one of the many resolutions for the year 2018. Henceforth, the NMBPD wishes you Happy New Year and expects that you yield to these practical security measures. The following measures are what the burglars hate most: ▸▸ Secured Doors and Windows: In approximately one-third of home burglaries, the burglar comes in through an unlocked door or window. The first line of defense in your home’s security is having solid core exterior doors with quality grade 1or 2 deadbolt locks. ▸▸ A Loud Dog: Dogs are not only “man’s best friend.” They can also be a burglar’s worst enemy. ▸▸ A Home Security System: Home security systems detect when someone enters your house uninvited, sets off an alarm, and also notifies authorities of an invasion. We recommend doing some online research and checking with local alarm companies to find the best system for your needs. ▸▸ Motion Sensor Lights: Installing sensor lights (which turn on when they detect motion) is a great way to illuminate portions of your property only when needed- like when someone enters the area. ▸▸ Surveillance Cameras: A video surveillance system doesn’t necessarily have to be costly. Installing a video security system can give you peace of mind and act as a deterrent to burglars, especially when you are on vacation. ▸▸ Protecting Warning Signs: Share that you have a dog or home security system with signage on your fence, door or window. Much like putting up security cameras, the information lets a burglar know you are well protected making you less of a target. ▸▸ A Trimmed and Tidy Yard: Untrimmed trees and shrubs provide good hiding places for burglars and can obscure their entry into your home. If you have trees or shrubs that provide hiding places to intruders, we recommend that you trim branches up to six feet from the ground and down to below the window sills. Consider hiring someone to mow your lawn if you are going to be out of town for more than a week. ▸▸ The Appearance that Someone is Home: To accomplish this, you can use motion-sensor lights and timers on a radio or TV to simulate occupancy and create the illusion that you’re home. ▸▸ Helpful Neighbors: Whenever you are away, we recommend asking your neighbors to get your mail and check for any deliveries. Life360 allows parents to get real-time information about their kids’ location, cell phone use and travel habits (e.g. were they speeding). My kids don’t like this app because it drains battery life. One afternoon, I was wondering where my teen son Justin was. I clicked on the Life360 app, pulled up the map, and there he was, in Pyongyang, North Korea! In reality, Justin was two blocks from home playing basketball, but he had very quickly figured out how to “spoof” his phone’s GPS; something I am quite sure I will never know how to do. Whether parents like it or not, our society is never going back to a time where young people use personal electronic devices less. The entire global culture has quickly evolved with the mobile phone at its center. Experts agree that the best way to keep kids safe online is ta combination of parental controls, mindful oversight and, most importantly, engagement with children.
