If you had the chance to be revived in the future, would you take it? WHAT IS CRYONICS? Cryonics is an effort to save lives by using temperatures so cold that a person beyond help by today’s medicine might be preserved for decades or centuries until a future medical technology can restore that person to full health. Cryonics is a second chance at life. It is the reasoned belief in the advancement of future medicinal technologies being able to cure things we can’t today.

Tell Us a Story You’re the Megillah Man – The Shpiel on This Year’s Purim Festival BY BEVERLY PERKINS

P

urim, the festival celebrated every year during late winter/early spring commemorates the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia from antiSemitic Haman. He had the evil plan to destroy, kill and annihilate all the Jews. Fortunately his plans were ruined by Mordecai and his cousin and adopted daughter Esther who became the Queen of Persia. The victory then became a day to rejoice and to feast. There are certain traditions followed to remember the significant day. Those who observe the festive holiday do so by: ▸▸ Reading the Megillah also known as the Book of Esther which tells the story of the Purim miracle. ▸▸ Giving gifts of money to the poor. ▸▸ Exchanging gifts of food and drink with friends. ▸▸ Eating a celebratory meal. ▸▸ Dressing up in costumes and wearing masks. ▸▸ Reciting prayers. Since 2007, The Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center has taken these traditions and made them into theatrical productions. The Center’s “Shpiels” (a Yiddish word used

to describe a play of sorts) have included retelling the story by selecting the music of popular artists and groups. Past featured artists have been Abba, The Beach Boys, The Beatles, Jersey Boys, Grease, and the infamous Michael Jackson with the Thrillah Megillah. Last year’s was all about rhythm and blues with the Motown Megillah. This year’s “Shpiel” has Cantors David Muchnick and Marcos Askenazi in a Billy Joel state-of-mind. They will present Purim with the song and the story through the musical legend’s numerous hits titled, The Megillah Man, a Norman Roth original. The cast will be comprised of members and displays the many talents of the Center’s children and adults. The production is equipped with a full multimedia component, along with instrumental and vocal backgrounds, sung and produced by the Cantors. “Our shpiels are one of the many highlights of the year for our members and the entire community boasting a steady attendance of 600+,” says Cantor Muchnick. “It’s a lot of hard work and commitment for all involved but the end result is a program that is talked about for months after and months leading up to the next shpiel. This year promises to be our best yet. The event is free to all in the community who wish to celebrate the joyous occasion on Saturday, March 11th at 7:00pm, with Mincha at 5:30pm, in the Soffer Sanctuary. Following the traditional Megillah reading, the Purim Party will continue with pizza, refreshments and delicious hamentaschen. Bounce houses, arts and crafts and groggers will also entertain the young guests. It’s suggested to come in costume and to arrive early. The Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center is located at 20400 NE 30th Avenue, Aventura. To make a reservation for the Motown Megillah visit www.atjc.org or call (305) 937-1880.

FIDF Supporters Raise Over $3.3M for Israel’s Soldiers at Miami Gala SECTION HEAD COMMUNITY NEWS

M

ore than 550 supporters from Florida and across the U.S. gathered last month at Faena Forum in Miami Beach for the Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) International Gala, raising over $3.3 million to support the brave men and women of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Chairing the gala was Miami-based businessman and philanthropist Benny Shabtai, who has been an avid supporter of FIDF for decades and has helped raise hundreds of millions of dollars to support the well-being and educational programs for IDF soldiers and veterans. Shabtai chaired the FIDF National Gala in New York for 15 years. “I chose to take it upon myself to hold this exclusive FIDF event in Florida because, over the years, I have witnessed the tremendous support Floridians have shown for the State of Israel and its brave soldiers, and I wanted these incredible supporters to meet the men and women who defend the State of Israel,” said Shabtai. “International business and philanthropic leaders came together around the shared goal of supporting humanitarian programs for the IDF soldiers who stand guard over Israel.” Presiding as the evening’s master of ceremonies was Fox Business and Fox

Other distinguished guests included Golden Globe winner George Hamilton; Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine; Counsel General of Israel to Florida and Puerto Rico Lior Haiat; President and Founder of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein; FIDF National President Peter Weintraub; FIDF National Chairman Emeritus Nily Falic; FIDF Miami President Oscar Feldenkreis; FIDF National Director and CEO Maj. Gen. (Res.) Meir KlifiAmir; and FIDF Florida Executive Director Dina Ben-Ari. During the gala, a special live satellite link connected the guests with the commander of the Israeli Air Force (IAF), Maj. Gen. Amir Eshel, as well as with IAF officers and pilots of the F-35 fighter jets – the most advanced fighter jets in the region – which arrived in Israel from the U.S. last month. The aircraft are stationed at an air force base in Israel’s Negev desert, where Lt. Col. “Y.” leads the new fighter squadron. In addition to the many supporters, also in attendance were a delegation of 12 IDF soldiers, including men and women from Israel’s newest coed combat infantry battalion, the Lions of Jordan.

For almost a decade, PharmCo Rx has worked to improve and preserve the well-being of their patients, their families, and the community. Each individual patient is treated with a dedicated, highly-qualified team to ensure that all their respective needs are met. Shital Parikh Mars, CEO of PharmCo Rx, took the time to answer some questions about the pharmacy.

What differentiates you from the competition? We face stiff competition from

both the major chains and the independent pharmacies. Our level of customer service, the breadth of services we offer, and a more nuanced and involved approach to healthcare are what separate us and make us better than the competition. Plus our unique service approach includes: ▸▸ Full Service Pharmacy ▸▸ Compounded and Specialty Medications ▸▸ Long Term Care Pharmacy ▸▸ 340B services to community organizations ▸▸ Medication and Therapy Management (MTM) ▸▸ Health Practice Risk Management ▸▸ Patient Health Risk Review ▸▸ Case Management Access Point ▸▸ Durable Medical Equipment ▸▸ Free Same Day and Next Day Delivery ▸▸ OTC Pharmaceuticals and Medical Supplies

What can customers expect when they visit your business? When a customer uses PharmCo Rx for their prescription needs they can expect a courteous staff willing to go the extra mile for them, and to also fight for them if it is needed.

They can always expect a dedicated team and quick, reliable service month after month. What are the latest trends in your business? Prescriptions of Specialty and Compounded Medications have been increasing for the last few years. However, that trend is apt to level off in the near term. What people should be looking for is more accountability from the pharmacy in the same way doctors are experiencing now. What do you offer that is new in the field? We believe that pharmacies hold the key to a great deal of improvement in the healthcare industry. Therefore, this is why we have become much more involved on both the patient side as well as the physician side. We educate doctors on best prescribing practices, offer data analytics, and recommendations on how to improve their practice to provide better care. For patients we offer reliable service, free same day

delivery, and the ability to get at home assistance and education with their medication therapy.

Is there anything else you would like readers to know about you or your business? Our staff at PharmCo Rx has always gone above and beyond to help patients in a positive, friendly, and caring manner making everone feel like family. While our competitors rely on patients to direct their own care, PharmCo takes the extra steps necessary to make sure a patient is taken care of. What are your hours of operation? Monday-Thursday: 8:30am-6:30pm Friday: 8:30am-6:00pm Saturday: 11:00am-4:00pm Sunday: Closed PharmCo Rx is located at 901 N. Miami Beach Blvd., Suite #1, North Miami Beach, 33162. Start Your Engines… The Victory Center Hosts ‘Road to Victory’ Annual Gala BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he Victory Center, which educates children with Autism and related disabilities is proud to host their 17th annual gala, “Road to Victory” on March 11, 2017 at 7:00pm to raise money for its educational programs. The 50s car themed gala will be held at the Miami Auto Museum, and is expected to attract more than 250 people. The Miami Auto Museum features the largest eclectic automobile collection in the world. Gala guests will be able to take a journey through a rare collection of motorcycles, bicycles, a $2 million Duesenberg and also visit the “Hollywood Cars of the Stars”, which holds the largest James Bond collection as well as the Dark Knight’s various modes of transportation. The Victory Center for Autism and Related Disabilities was founded seventeen years ago by Judi and Barry Nelson, the parents of a child with Autism. Frustrated by the lack of appropriate educational opportunities for their son, they decided to find their own solution. “We looked at every option available for our son at the time, but there was no school in South Florida to get him the level of education we were looking for,” said Barry Nelson, an attorney and member of the center’s board of directors. Rhonda Hill has been chairing the gala for the past seven years. Hill moved to South Florida in 2008 from Boise, Idaho to enroll her son in the Victory Center. Her son suffers from Autism with an intellectual disability and has been able to learn

life skills from his teachers at The Victory Center. “From the moment I moved here, I knew the teachers and staff would be my support group,” said Hill. Nearly nine years later, Hill’s son (now 16) is doing exceptionally well, learning new life skills to care for himself as he enters adulthood. Events like the gala help raise funds for school programs and technologies to better serve the students. Past events have made the school’s expansion possible. In November of 2016, the Victory Center broke ground on a brand new 8,500 square-foot facility that will double the center’s capacity. “Our new building will have more opportunities to expand and improve programs for children with developmental disabilities,” said Victory Center CEO Raquel Pancer. “We are excited to watch the construction of our new home and cannot wait for completion.” High-ticket auction items include a trip to Paris on American Airlines (business class) and a week stay at a luxurious apartment near the Eiffel Tower. Sponsorships start at $1,000 and at the $12,000 sponsorship level includes dinner with Brian Weiss, author of Many Lives Many Masters. Tickets for the gala cost $225 per person. For more information about the school or to purchase tickets for the gala, please contact Raquel Pancer, CEO, rpancer@thevictoryschool.org, 305466-1142 or visit online at www.victorygala.org.

There is Nothing MUNdane about Aventura Waterways Model United Nations Program BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

ventura Waterways K8 (AWK8) has been fortunate to have the incredible Model United Nations (MUN) program available to their students through the Social Studies Department. Currently in its 6th year, the educational/ extracurricular opportunity has grown exponentially under the leadership of Mr. Jeffrey Dean. Middle school MUN is the fastest growing program both nationally and internationally. Just six years ago only eleven students could only participate in a district sponsored conference/ competition. During that first year, AWK8 won one Honorable Mention Delegation award on the General Assembly. Over the last five years the student delegates have won individual awards, the team has been awarded the Best Middle School Delegation for three years running at the district competition, and they participate in multiple conferences each year including MICSUN at UM, FIMUN at FIU, and culminate with the highly anticipated, largest middle school three-day conference in the world, The International Middle School MUN Conference, in New York City later this month. This year AWK8 has their largest delegation ever with over 50 student delegates on the team. The alumni return each year as student coaches/mentors to assist in all aspects of training. Currently a rotating team of 8 student coaches led by Head Coach Victoria Lee-A-Young, a senior at the School for Advanced Studies – North and noted as the first Best Delegation on the Security Council at the NY international conference in 2012-2013. Her Assistant Head Coaches are Alan Imar, a junior at Dr. Michael Krop High School, and Francisco Escolar, a junior at University School. Students learn procedure, rules of debate, public speaking, how to write position papers, and develop resolutions. Conferences can run one, two, or three days. The team is assigned countries, committees, and topics prior to the conference. Students then

debate issues of global importance and try to build consensus for their solutions all while protecting the interests of their countries and those of their allies. “It is amazing to watch the students gain an awareness of the world around them and become passionate in their resolve to find solutions,” says Dean. “Their commitment is amazing. To this day, most students still tell me it was one of their best experiences ever as a student.” Dean goes on to say, “I could go on and on about MUN. While it is nice to win awards, the real reward is the experiences, education, skills, and global awareness that our students gain from their participation. I was a MUN student myself and love having the opportunity to offer it to our students.” Aventura Waterways K8 is looking to find local businesses, politicians, and corporate sponsors to provide some financial resources and/ or partnerships for the MUN program which will allow students the opportunity to participate in other countries. Anyone interested may contact Jeffrey S. Dean at JeDean@dadeschools.net.

In addition to the Aventura area, Kredi aspires to have collection facilities throughout South Florida. The ambitious teen already enlisted the help of Annie Rojzman in Palm Beach County Aaron Kredi who has established a collection for the Jacobson Family Food Pantry, a program of Ruth and Norman Rales Jewish Family Services in Delray Beach. Unopened leftover Passover purchases are always welcome to all pantries except those made with matzah meal. aron Kredi, Aventura resident and Junior at American Heritage School, is on a mission to help feed those with special dietary needs. He wants to spread the word that the Jewish Community Services Kosher Food Bank (JCS KFB) is in need of not just kosher foods for those that observe kosher (kashrut) dietary laws, but gluten free foods as well. Aaron was diagnosed with Celiac Disease (CD) at the age of seven and has learned over the years how to manage his special diet. However, this inquisitive teen was grocery shopping a few years ago with his mother at a kosher market Annie Rojzman and realized how expensive it is to be Gluten-Free and Kosher. He then began to wonder how someone who is in need of a food bank would obtain gluten free food. “According to the CDC, 1 in 133 Americans have an autoimmune disease called Celiac. As someone who has Celiac and has a kosher home, I knew there had to be clients of the JCS Kosher Food Bank of South Florida that would be in need of gluten-free products,” says Kredi. “I visited there and spoke to Director Bonnie Schwartzbaum who told me they do in fact have quite a few clients with this need. That is when I decided to take action and establish the ‘Gluten Free Shelves’.” As part of his Bar Mitzvah service project in 2013 Kredi worked with Schwartzbaum and created the “Gluten

When you ask about the day’s homework, chaos erupts! Your child can’t remember the assignment details. You calmly ask if they were written down in the daily planner and receive the response that the planner has been lost for weeks, but all the information is on a scrap of paper somewhere. Your child is now frantically searching the backpack for that scrap of paper and your floor becomes littered with crumbled papers. You then remember that you can view homework on the school’s website. All will be well! But then no one (including you!) can remember how to log into the website. And this is not the first time. For many children (and many of us adults), organizational skills and time management pose huge obstacles. In education, we refer to these as executive functioning skills, which is defined as a set of processes that all have to do with managing one’s self and one’s resources in order to achieve a goal. (Cooper-Kahn and Dietzel) Here are some pointers to help your child develop executive functioning skills to set them up for success. ▸▸ Ask your child’s teacher to provide a pack up checklist for the end of each day, including: ▸▸ Did I write down my assignments? ▸▸ How long should it take to complete each item? ▸▸ ·Do I have the correct materials? ▸▸ child to cross off items as they are completed. ▸▸ Make sure your child knows how to log into the classroom’s web page, which should have a syllabus, homework and test dates. ▸▸ Establish a consistent routine and a neat physical space to complete homework at home. ▸▸ Keep school supplies on hand. ▸▸ Keep a timer available; cellphones have timers! ▸▸ Post a calendar for long-term assignments and create a timeline. ▸▸ Build in breaks: work/break/work/ break. ▸▸ If writing is laborious for your child, encourage use of computer. ▸▸ Encourage reviewing and proofreading. ▸▸ Provide written reminders to place completed work into the appropriate folder in the backpack. ▸▸ Reinforce and praise effort. ▸▸ Place completed homework in the backpack, placed by the front door, ready for the morning. If assignments are digital, make sure your child has uploaded them or clicked “submit”. ▸▸ Encourage weekly backpack checks. Eliminate unnecessary items. ▸▸ Be sure not to over-program extracurricular activities. ▸▸ Make sure the whole family eats well and gets enough sleep. ▸▸ Stay calm. Your child follows your lead. We live in a digital world and, thankfully, many tools exist to help your

very year, police-reported crash data and some observational studies estimated that 8 out 10 child safety seats are not installed properly, and has caused more than 100,000 children from age 12 and under to die, or get injured in motor vehicles collisions. Undoubtedly, it is incumbent upon any person who transports a child under the age of 8 years to be responsible for securing that child in an appropriately approved child restraint, commonly called Child Safety Seat. In view of the tragedy of number of children killed that may have survived had they been properly restrained, the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) is absolutely committed to consider the increased use of effective interventions and efforts aimed at protecting child passengers. To help parents put their children in an appropriate car safety seat that is correctly installed, the NMBPD has an employee who is trained and certified in the Child Passenger Safety Certification Training Program, which is a week-long intensive program for over 40 hours. As a free service to the community, the NMBPD provides one-on-one child seat installation/inspection to assist with the comprehension of how to conduct proper installation/inspection of child safety seats. While working with parents to make sure that they have the knowledge necessary to properly install the child safety seat in their vehicle, the certified Child Passenger Safety (CPS) technician has observed a combined rate of misuses for car seats and booster seats. The most observed misuses for rearfacing car seats, forward-facing car seats, and booster seats were incorrect amount of recline, loose car seat installation, and improper lap belt position. According to the CPS technician, misusing a car seat/booster seat is a concern; therefore, the CPS technician recommends that the parent or legal guardian of a child under the age of 8 to pay attention to the following best-practice recommendations, which meet the Federal Safety Standard: ▸▸ Incorrect Amount of Recline in Car Seat of Rear-Facing Infant: the best practice recommendation is that the amount of recline in the rear-facing car seat should be between 30 and 45 degrees, regardless of age. ▸▸ Loose Car Seat Installation in Forward-Facing Car Seat: the best practice recommendation is that the car seat should not move more than 1 inch laterally when pushed or pulled at the belt path. ▸▸ Improper Lap Belt Position in Highback/Backless Booster Seat: the best practice recommendation is that the lap belt position should be placed across the hips/thighs of the child. Additionally, the CPS technician recommends the following child passenger safety tips: ▸▸ Keep children in rear-facing safety seats as long as possible. ▸▸ Keep children in the back seat at least through age 12. ▸▸ Never place a rear-facing safety seat in front of an active airbag. ▸▸ Always register your safety seat with the manufacturer so you can be notified of recalls. ▸▸ All objects in the vehicle should be stowed in the trunk or tied down, as they can become projectiles if a crash or sudden stop occurs. It should be noted that the individual installations/inspections are by appointments only; therefore, call and request an appointment and the CPS technician will contact you as soon as your request is received. Remember, parents can significantly reduce the risk to their children if they put them in an appropriate car safety seat that is correctly installed. If you have questions and/or comments, please do not hesitate to contact the Crime Prevention Line at (305) 948-2955.

Norman is an eleven and a half year-old Dachshund. His favorite person is his human mommy, Lisa. His favorite toy is a squeaky dog, Mr. Dachshund, which resembles himself. This little canine enjoys the finer things since he loves air travel and shrimp dumplings. His big dislike are sanitation trucks. His favorite thing to do is going to restaurants. Of course, he was last seen at Mr. Chef’s in Aventura where he most definitely indulged in some Asian dumplings.
