Summer Camp Traditions – We Need Them More Now Than Ever

T

he American tradition of summer camp goes back many years. The precursors to today’s camps were born during the turn of the 19th century as part of a “back to nature” cultural movement. Summer camp popularity took off during World War II. With fathers away fighting and mothers working to support the effort, organizations like the Boy Scouts of America, Girl Scouts, and the YMCA began camps to simply keep kids busy while school was out. What started out as cheap daycare has evolved into the myriad of camp options families have today. There is a camp for virtually every interest, from sports and theater to computer programming and world language studies. With so many choices available, some children explore several interests by attending multiple camp programs during the same summer. In addition to pursuing passions, summer camp is a chance for kids to try new things and make new friends. That’s more important than ever because today’s kids are growing up in the digital age. Summer camp allows children to connect with peers, play actual games not virtual ones, and experience the world around them. To find the best camp or camps for your child, check out the Our City Summer Camp Guide in this issue, or go to www.ourcitymedia.com for a complete listing of all the summer camp programs in the region. Sincerely,

No Bones About It, The 2017 Walk for the Animals Raised More Than $115,000! BY BEVERLY PERKINS

A

nimal lovers gathered with their four-legged friends to participate in the annual “Walk for the Animals”. The fun-filled event benefitted the homeless animals living at the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center in North Miami Beach. The dedication of those driven to help the shelter animals find fur-ever homes raised over $115,000. The walk took place on a beautiful morning at Bayfront Park. After the leisurely stroll all participants, humans and canines, were able to enjoy many activities. Doggie contests with categories such as “Look-Alike” and “Best Kisser” were fun to watch and entertaining to enter. A must stop was the “Doggie Fun Zone”, an agility course that consisted of hurdles and tight corners where pups got to show off their speed and agility. Photo Credit: Daphne Plug Photography However, those that didn’t have dogs were still able to enjoy carnival style games like Rocco’s Pack Coin Toss. Sponsored by Rocco’s Pack Dog Training, attendees tossed their loose change into colored dog bowls which were matched by the dog trainers. This type of donation showed that every penny counts. Notable “paw”sonalities were also in attendance. Animal-lover Commissioner Sally A. Heyman was the Grand Marshall for another year and Ryan Phillips, meteorologist for NBC6, was emcee for the ninth year. Joining Ryan as emcee for another consecutive year was Julie Guy, morning show host at 101.5 LITE FM. This

year, Guy brought along her “Paws Patrol” team, consisting of Evelyn Curry, Gayle Garton, and Kimba, to help judge the contests. Mayor Carlos A. Giménez and Miami-Dade Public Defender, Carlos Martinez, also attended to show their support. Of course, this event would not be complete without a “Walk for the Animals Adoption Arena”. Adorable puppies, kittens, and dogs from a local rescue group were looking for new homes and families. One lucky adoption did take place. Human attendees were able to nosh on sweet treats at the Bakery Booth with items donated by The Fresh Market of Aventura and Vicky Bakery. Many Humane Society volunteers also made homemade goodies. “The Walk for the Animals is one of my favorite events because it brings so many animal-lovers from all around the community together to celebrate our loyal companions,” says Laurie Hoffman, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Greater Miami. “This year’s event proved to be the best yet, with more funds raised than ever!”

The Russian American Chamber Celebrated International Women’s Day BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he Russian American Chamber (RAC) wanted to be sure they acknowledged International Women’s Day at their recent RAC Business Mixer. The international holiday was commemorated around the world on March 8th to celebrate women and their social, political, and economic achievements as well as all the strides women have made in history. Novecento hosted the Chamber’s evening at their Aventura location. The Argentinean restaurant was the perfect venue to hold such an event. The casually elegant European style bistro provided a delicious menu with Latin American influences to an outstanding group that continually enjoys bringing people together. Everyone in attendance raised a glass to toast all the amazing women in the community and all the incredible women around the world. “Personal relationships are still the number one reason why people do business together,” said Alla K. Rios, Director of Operations for RAC. “Thank you to all our members and guests who joined us for another great event among friends and who celebrated this special occasion with us. Thank you Novecento for hosting this memorable event and thank you Mia Roses, our event partner, who presented our guests with a beautiful gift! This event was another great example of how Russian American Chamber continues bringing people together.” The Russian American Chamber of South Florida (RAC) is an organization designed to enhance prosperity for Russian and American Businesses in Florida and is committed to serving the needs of the growing Russian community. Russian American Chamber prides itself on bringing people together for the purpose of bringing unity to the Russian-speaking community, bridging ties between Russian

and American businesses and creating an entrepreneurial environment where companies grow, individuals succeed and the community benefits. Through their continued efforts, Russian American Chamber has become the “go to” source for information, support, cultural events, festivals, business referrals, networking, socializing and much more. Due to RAC’s extensive involvement and dedication to helping people and businesses, many refer to Russian American Chamber as the trusted voice in the Russian community. RAC has become widely popular in cities heavily populated with Russian speaking people which include Sunny Isles Beach, Aventura, Miami Beach, Bal Harbour, Hollywood, Hallandale, Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton. The Russian American Chamber of South Florida is always appreciative of its general sponsors which is why they are able to do what they do in the community: TA&D Mortgage, Coffey Burlington, Lexus of Pembroke Pines, Law Offices of Steven S. Farbman, P.A., Lauderdale BMW, Florida Russian Magazine, Lexus of North Miami and Sunshine State Academy. Miami Students Give a Hand to Those in Need – CADENA Initiative 2017 COMMUNITY NEWS

Second Place Winners Orly Shapiro and Tanya Almog

ADENA is a Jewish non-profit organization devoted to providing assistance in the case of emergencies and natural disasters. CADENA brings aid “Hand in Hand” directly to those in need, and has been responsible for more than 140 humanitarian aid missions over the past ten years. CADENA was founded as an active response to the consequences of natural disasters in Mexico. After Hurricane Stan impacted Chiapas in 2005, a group of young people from the Jewish Community decided to bring aid (donations from their community) directly to the victims and ensure that the aid reached those most in need. This experience impacted the volunteers and sparked the creation of CADENA. Between the years 2005 and 2008, many disasters struck different areas of Mexico. These events motivated the young members of the Jewish Community to join the humanitarian cause and offer aid directly to those in need.

Third Place Winners Tal Naider, Talia Lewinger, and Dalia Leibowitz Brauser

CADENA was officially founded in 2008 as an organization that supports its country in the event of natural disasters in the name of the Jewish Community of Mexico. Through the years, CADENA has continued its humanitarian help not only in Mexico, but also internationally. The main objective of the organization is to offer humanitarian assistance to communities that have experienced a natural disaster, promoting a preventive culture and encouraging solidarity and shared responsibility within those communities. CADENA’s support, starts at the rescue stage if necessary, and continues up to the delivery of help for the people to recover. The main components of action are emergencies, prevention, and education. Six years ago, the educational program CADENA INITIATIVE, started in Mexico City, and this year, for the first time, four Jewish Middle Schools in Miami participated. Students were asked to develop an inno-

vative idea that will offer support before, during, or after a natural disaster. The organization recently held “A Call for Proposals 2017” at Temple Sinai in Miami Beach. The three best projects Judges Panel earned awards, and the first place winner gets to travel to Mexico City to compete in the CADENA Mexico Initiative Contest and Award Ceremony. The overall winning project will be implemented in the vulnerable communities. Hochberg Preparatory students Ava Perloff and Juliet Marks won first place with their project, “Washi Warmth – E Poncho”. Scheck Hillel Community School students Orly Shapiro and Tanya Almog came in second place with their “Inflatable Oxygen Mask”. Lastly, the Maimonides Academy trio, Tal Naider, Talia Lewinger and Dalia Leibowitz Brauser came up with “Our Song”, winning third place. Judging the creative projects were Zalman Cohen, Sara Bejar, Leon Roy Hausmann, Tania Charabati, and Gary Bomzer. Lights, Camera, and Plenty of Action in Scheck Hillel’s Jordan Alexander Ressler Arts Program SCHOOL NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

his year marks the 10 year anniversary of the Jordan Alexander Ressler Arts Endowment at the Scheck Hillel Community School. Jordan Alexander Ressler had a passion for life and a love for the arts. He launched a successful career in film and theatre after graduating from Cornell University with credits in original productions of “Billy Crystal’s 700 Sundays” and “Jersey Boys”. Tragically in 2004, at just 23-years-old, Jordan passed away in a terrible accident. In 2007, his family created the arts program in his name to keep his legacy alive, and to inspire children to discover their own talents, ignite their own passions, and chase their own dreams. The Jordan Alexander Ressler Arts Program is a marker of excellence that is developed from Early

Childhood through Grade 12. Students are given a personal choice for their creative outlet, which helps to develop respect and understanding for all fine and performing art forms. The program involves visual arts and performing arts such as music including areas of band, orchestra, drumline and musical theatre. Opportunities are offered as part of the school’s curriculum from 18 months to Grade 12, and as after-school enrichment. Recently, the 2016-2017 season included musical theatre productions of “Beauty and the Beast Jr.” and “James and the Giant Peach”. Both were under the direction of South Florida’s renowned director, Anthony Campisi with musical direction by twotime Carbonell Award winner Emmanuel Schvartzman. Justine Rosales choreographed “James and the Giant Peach” while Nicole Kinzel choreographed “Beauty and the Beast Jr.”. The after-school musical theatre program instills in students the importance of collaboration and teamwork, the value and rewards of hard work, a passion and commitment toward their work, and an appreciation for the performing arts

which is the goal of the Jordan Alexander Ressler Arts Program. Students that participate in the theatre have the opportunity to practice comprehension and understanding of the deeper meanings of the written word.

Additionally, they learn how to ask critical questions for clarification, perfect memorization and recollection skills, and practice public speaking skills while learning the value of self-discipline and dedication. Both productions had colorful sets and costumes, and were classic tales with great life lessons. Scheck Hillel is one of the world’s largest Jewish community day schools and a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. For information on Scheck Hillel Community School, please visit eHillel.org.

ACE Teachers Receive an A+ from Their Students and Families BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he Aventura Charter School, better known as Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES), recently held their Teacher Appreciation Week (TAW). Parent volunteers gathered, brainstormed, and planned an elaborate week of sweets, treats, and surprises for the faculty and staff to show their appreciation of all their hard work, dedication, and effort. This year’s theme, “Teachers Shape Our Lives”, was taken to another level as volunteers brought in catered breakfasts and lunches amongst other wonderful gifts donated from the community. However, food and drinks were not the only way they said, “Thank you!” The committee was able to commission Aimah Hashem, a local artist from the Wynwood Art District. The committee collaborated with Hashem to create a custom art piece wall to celebrate the theme of how teachers shape lives. Hashem was gracious and generous as she donated her time and talent. The wall, entitled, “A Better Place” is a tribute to the teachers, their love and all they do for the children.

“Aimah created a stunning masterpiece for our school to have for years to come. We are now the first school in our area to have an official ‘ArtWall’, and certainly the first building to have an Art Wall in the City of Aventura,” said Committee Chair Cindy Orlinsky. “The story behind the inspiration and the result are breathtaking!” Custom themed decor adorned the halls and the teachers’ lounge where teachers enjoyed their delicious meals. Each day of the dedicated week the teachers also received a special “thank you” gift. In addition to the “wall”, the school received donations from businesses in both Miami-Dade and Broward Counties for the anticipated raffle. The highlight of the week was the “Main Event”. On this day teachers and administration were treated to an all-star event held at the Aventura Cultural Center. The afternoon consisted of musical entertainment, an art auction, and refreshments. The special event closed with a motivational speaker who engaged the audience in an interactive presentation where they won superlatives that were voted by their peers, and raffle prizes which included weekend getaways at local hotels. Throughout the week, the TAW committee received breakfast donations from Moe’s Bagels, Bagel Cove, Roasters and Toasters, Raw Republic, Raw Juce, and Smoothie King. Lunch was hosted by Anthony’s Coal Fire Pizza, Tu Pizza, Aventura Hospital, Jimmy Johns, and Pita Plus. Parents also made custom dishes and so much more. “Teacher appreciation week is a testament to the partnership between the Aventura community and ACES, said Principal Julie Alm. “We are all a team dedicated to supporting one another with the singular goal of helping our children grow and thrive.”

President Dr. Roslyn Clark-Artist, Esq., greeted the Mourning Family Foundation and over 400 students from various high schools from across Miami Dade County while comedian Darren Brand hosted, and motivational coach Terri Crook moderated the event. The students had an opportunity to interact with an all-star panel, ask questions, and seek advice on a range of topics such as cyber-bullying, the influence of musical lyrics on behavior, education, self-esteem, and political issues facing their generation. The panels included NBA legend Alonzo Mourning and his wife Tracy Mourning, Grammy-nominated and Stellar Award winning singer/songwriter Jonathan McReynolds, Season 8 Finalist of The Voice, Koryn Hawthorn, author, commentator and activist Kevin Powell, and actress Stacy Rose from the HBO hit show “The Ballers.” On Saturday, the City of North Miami hosted the Foot Locker Zo’s 5K Run/Walk and Family Health & Wellness Fun Day presented by Aquafina at the North Miami Athletic Stadium. The weekend concluded on Monday with an All Star Hall of Fame Golf Classic at the renowned Turnberry Isle Golf Resort, sponsored by Nike, and the Warren Henry Automotive group. Retired legends, Julius “Dr. J.” Irving, Lawrence Taylor, Dan Marino, Nat Moore and the NBA, NFL, and MLB legends competed in a day of golf to raise money to support the Mourning Family Foundation education and mentoring programs at the Overtown Youth Center and Honey Shine, Inc. a mentoring program for girls founded by Tracy Mourning with programs in Miami Dade County, Los Angeles, Dallas, and soon to launch in Las Vegas and Washington, D.C. he Aventura Marketing Council / World-Class Chamber of Commerce had its spring breakfast at Turnberry Isle Resort. The event of the month was the “Complete Athletes Awards”, which was hosted by Atlantic Broadband. The ninth largest cable operator in the United States recognized inspiring athletes who give back to their communities. Faheem Ali, Founder and President of Complete Athletes, served as the emcee and award presenter. Complete Athletes conducts training and development for student athletes, and creates programs for college prep, life skills and professional development. The organization’s purpose is to be great role models for young athletes. AMC Chair Gary Pyott of FirstService Residential and Atlantic Broadband Marketing Director Maia Mediavilla welcomed hundreds of business and community leaders. Expressing appreciation for their support, Ali presented honorary awards to Mediavilla and Floyd Raglin of Floyd Sports Marketing, who helped assemble the NFL panel. “Atlantic Broadband takes pride in supporting local businesses, civic and educational organizations, said Mediavilla. “We thank the AMC for this opportunity to recognize local athletes for giving back.” Many NFL alumni attended including Lawrence Taylor, Oronde Gadsden, Anthony Harris, Sam Madison, Donnell Bennett, Daryl Porter, and Duane Starks. Lawrence Taylor, New York Giants Hall of Famer, founded “Fore Life” golf project. Its’ mission is to combine possibility, hope, and success while protecting and empowering children. “I try to instill into the kids the philosophy my father passed on to me that just to

be equal, you’ve got to be better than the next man,” said the linebacker. “Life can deal you setbacks, but our kids know when they get knocked down and they’re lying on their backs, if they can look up, they can get up and win.” Donnell Bennett, the American football fullback, is the Director of Player Development for his alma mater, Cardinal Gibbons High. He also supports Clearing the Way Asthma Foundation, and All Pro Dad with other NFL players, coaches and alumni to promote the importance of being a good father. Other outstanding players, Oronde Gadsden, Daryl Porter and Anthony Harris are teaching and coaching in Miami-Dade and Broward schools. Super Bowl champion, Sam Madison founded “Madison Avenue 4 Kids”, as well as other charities who bestow scholarships and other necessities for underprivileged children. U of M alumni and former Baltimore Ravens cornerback, Duane Starks, founded the “Starks Charitable Foundation”. The foundation has given over 150 scholarships to less fortunate kids, in addition to establishing a financial literacy program for student athletes at the University of Miami. Starks invites AMC members and other fellow athletes to play golf every Tuesday at courses in Miami-Dade and Broward. “I’m excited about being around a group that puts our past in the past and puts the kids’ future in the present,” stated Starks.

Safe Disposal of Unused Medicines Drop-Off BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM

rescription medications and over-the-counter drugs play an important role in the health of millions of Americans. However, in some households the medicine cabinet is full of expired drugs or leftover medications. These expired medications can pose significant health hazards to toddlers, teens, and even pets who may inadvertently consume them. Some of these drugs are still chemically active that even one dose could be fatal if accidentally digested. There are other important safety issues: misuse of prescription narcotic drugs is increasingly a major public health concern. A U.S government report shows that more than 70% of people who first misuse prescription drugs get them from their friends, relatives or simply take them without asking. According to the Behavioral Health Trends in the United States: Results from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), roughly one in 10 Americans aged 12 or older engaged in illicit drug use and includes 4.3 million people who reported current “ nonmedical” use of prescription drug. Provided these statistics, there is a need for proper disposal of unused or expired prescription from the home.

The North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) shares the concern of the FDA’S concern about the growing epidemic of abuse, misuse, dependence, and overdose of opioids in the United States of America. In response to the growing demand for a safe and convenient way to dispose of household prescription, the NMBPD, a DEA authorized collection site, has installed a drop-box in the main lobby of the station: 16901 N.E. 19th Ave. North Miami Beach Florida, 33162. This initiative is a big step toward preventing unnecessary death due to accidental medication exposure and usage of prescription drugs by unintended parties – including young people facing peer pressure and new ways to “get high”. The North Miami Beach Police Department constantly strives to be proactive in enhancing public safety and saving lives. The “SAFE DISPOSAL DRUG DROP-OFF” is available to the community. Residents can drop off unused or expired prescription - no questions asked. BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O.

heumatoid arthritis is a chronic inflammatory disorder which affects the lining of the joints, causing painful swelling. Ultimately, over time, rheumatoid arthritis may result in bone erosion and joint deformity. The autoimmune illness occurs when the immune system wrongly attacks its own body’s tissues. The inflammation can eventually destroy the cartilage and bone within the joint. The tendons and ligaments that hold the joint together will then weaken and stretch. Gradually, the joint will lose its shape and alignment. Doctors are still not certain of why this process may occur, although a genetic component appears likely. While the genes don’t actually cause rheumatoid arthritis, they can make one more susceptible. Viral and bacterial infections may trigger the disease as well as other risk factors including: sex, age, family history, smoking, environmental exposures, and obesity. Signs and symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis may include: ▸▸ Tender, warm, and swollen joints ▸▸ Joint stiffness ▸▸ Fatigue, fever and weight loss These may vary in severity and may even come and go. These “flares” alternate with intensity, and then fade or disappear for a while. It’s been known that early signs rheumatoid arthritis tend to affect your smaller joints first. These being the joints that attach your fingers to your hands and your toes to your feet. As the disease progresses, symptoms often spread to the wrists, knees, ankles, elbows, hips and shoulders. In most cases, symptoms occur in the same joints on both sides of your body. About 40 percent of the people who have rheumatoid arthritis also experience signs and symptoms that don’t involve the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect many non-joint structures, including: skin, eyes, lungs, heart, kidneys, salivary glands, nerve tissue, bone marrow, and blood vessels. Unfortunately, there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis. But recent discoveries indicate that remission of symptoms is more likely when treatment begins early with strong medications known as disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs). Therapy is also an option, as physical or occupational therapists can teach exercises to help keep joints flexible. Alternative medicine has also been found to be a popular treatment. These may include taking fish and plant oils along with practicing the Chinese martial art of Tai chi, which has been known to reduce pain. If all medications and all other options fail to prevent or slow joint damage, surgery may be considered. Rheumatoid arthritis surgery may involve one or more of the following procedures: tendon repair, joint fusion, total joint replacement, and/or synovectomy (removal of the joint lining). It is recommended to see a doctor if you have persistent discomfort and swelling in your joints. While new types of medications have improved treatment options dramatically, severe rheumatoid arthritis can still cause physical disabilities if not treated.

Murphy Wayne is a Maltese mix. The sweet sevenyear-old pup is a “Daddy’s Boy”. He adores his favorite human, as much as he loves his favorite toys, a dinosaur named Arthur and a stuffed broccoli. His favorite treat is a scrambled egg breakfast. The tri-pawed canine likes showing everyone how capable he is at doing everything his 4-legged counterparts can do. But, he dislikes being away from his human Mommy and Daddy. Therefore, it was no surprise he was last seen sneaking into his Daddy’s briefcase.
