THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR ADVANCED PANCREATIC AND LIVER CANCER PATIENTS Patients once diagnosed with locally advanced Pancreatic and Liver Cancers were given little hope and often offered limited treatment options all with certain short life expectancies despite the treatment they were receiving. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation, also known as IRE or NANO-KNIFE for short, has changed all that. Patients are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies based on recently published reports. Though currently used in patients with known locally advanced disease it has now found its place in the operating room and used when patients are “unexpectedly” found to have more advanced disease than pre-operative imaging shows.

Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director of Institute for Breast Cancer Prevention

Dr. Robert Donoway, a surgical oncologist trained at SloanKettering, is the only surgeon performing these procedures. During the procedure, in the operating room, after it has been determined that the patient’s tumor is non-resectable, ne needle probes are placed through the tumor using ultrasound guidance to ensure there is no injury to critical structures such as the Bile Ducts and Portal Vein. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is delivered through the probes in 90 microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The procedure lasts between 1 & 2 hours using imaging to follow the ablative process. After the procedure is completed the probes are removed and the patient is taken to ICU step down for a 24-hour observation period. Most patients are discharged in 2 or 3 days following surgery and because there is no major surgery to recover from they are able to start postoperative neo-adjuvant type chemotherapy and radiation sooner. After 3 to 6 months of combination treatment patients are re-evaluated and restaged. A number have been converted to Resection candidates, which is still deemed the standard of care. Preliminary results have been very encouraging and have more than doubled many patients' life expectancy. Clinical trials are ongoing to use new novel agents including monoclonal antibodies and vaccines as the next line of treatment in this highly selected & heavily pre-treated group. Dr. Donoway is the only surgeon performing this procedure in Florida. For more information about Dr. Donoway visit www.AtlasOncology.com

iving a healthy lifestyle is abundant in the beautiful City of Aventura. When driving through the community, one can be sure to see residents taking full advantage of the pristine tree-lined walking and biking trails. Others of all ages enjoy the many parks and the recreation center for their physical activity, playtime, and sports. The City recognizes the need for more opportunities promoting good health among its residents, so a yoga class was started last year at Founders Park. The free class, held on Fridays at 9:00am, is open to everyone of all levels and abilities. Participation has

kept growing since its inception, and residents have been loving the peaceful practice that they receive at “Yoga in the Park”. “Yoga at Founders Park is a great way to create community through people, parks and programs,” says Kimberly S. Merchant, Community Services Director of City of Aventura. It has been so popular, that another fitness class was created for those that want a more intense workout. “Boot Camp Fitness” began just a couple of months ago. Instructors JP Montanari and his wife Stefanie Benaim create fun interactive workouts, which include multi-functional movements and exercises to improve conditioning, during the free classes also held at Founders Park. The response has been overwhelming as 30-50 residents have been in attendance during the previous classes. The fit couple designed the one-hour class for all fitness levels to help residents stay active and grow their overall health awareness.

Live your best life now. Let us help you combat depression, anxiety and feeling miserable about most anything In his clinical practice, Dr. Donde helps guide individuals and couples toward living more rationally using REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy). As the stoic philosopher Epictetus said: “People are disturbed not by things, but by the views they take of them.” We largely create our own feelings through the beliefs and views we take of events that occur in our lives. For example, consider how differently people around us may respond to a tragic event despite observing similar physical stimuli. In the days and weeks following the event, individuals

will respond differently because of their beliefs and interpretations of the event. REBT serves to help clients learn to challenge irrational belief systems by identifying and disputing the faulty beliefs that cause and maintain our disturbances. To this end, REBT is as much a philosophical endeavor as it is a psychological intervention. Dr. Donde is honored to assist clients on the journey to living a more rational existence by taking control of their feelings through REBT.

The popular show hosted by Chef Michelle Bernstein offers foodies the opportunity to dish with other like-minded food enthusiasts about their favorite dining establishments while celebrating the melting pot of South Florida culture and cuisine. Each week, three locals join Bernstein in the WPBT studio to discuss their experiences after they dine anonymously and separately at each location. Nothing is off the table as they are encouraged to talk about service, atmosphere, price, and of course, the food. The City of North Miami Beach is excited to be chosen for the show’s tasting tour which is planned for Tuesday, May 22nd. Take Me Out to The Ball Game – Canes, Cavaliers, and Canines!

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

E

veryone knows it’s spring when the clocks “spring forward”, night begins later, and the sport of baseball is in full force. A beautiful March evening brought fans out to gather at Mark Light Field to watch the Canes take on the Virginia Cavaliers. However, it wasn’t any ordinary baseball game, it was the University of Miami’s third annual “Bark in the Park” event. Fans were encouraged to bring their favorite four-legged friends for a night at the ball park. The University of Miami once again teamed up with pre-

senting sponsor Miami Veterinary Specialists to support the Humane Society of Greater Miami. For just $12, the “Bark in the Park” package included a game ticket and a dog ticket with a portion of the proceeds going directly to the not-for-profit shelter and adoption center for homeless animals. Approximately 100 animal lovers and baseball fans were able to take part in a pre-game on-field parade with their pups. Adoptable dogs from the Soffer and Fine Adoption Center were also on-site looking to score a “home run” by finding their forever families and homes.

Unfortunately, the canines struck out with no adoptions that night, but with $4 of each doggie ticket going back to the North Miami Beach facility, the event was certainly a “hit”. “Everyone loves this event. Although we did not have any adoptions, the doggies did have a lot of fun meeting people!” said Melania Ochoa, Communications and Marketing Coordinator for the Humane Society of Greater Miami. Fox, DO, RPVI, FSVM is boarded in vascular medicine, phlebology, internal medicine and is a vein and laser expert. She has been using lasers and treating veins for decades. insufficiency, lipodermatosclerosis and leg ulcers. At Fox Vein Experts, they have developed their own techniques to improve the disappearance of varicose and spider veins. Dr. Fox is recognized as a vein and laser expert and has lectured nationally. She has been featured on several news programs for her expertise. They also have the newest and best lasers available for tattoo removal, spot removal, hair removal, acne scar removal and skin rejuvenation and tightening. Dr. Fox accepts most major insurances for any treatment that is medically necessary. Dr. Fox answered some commonly asked questions about her practice. Describe your practice. We are a premier vein and laser center conveniently located in Hollywood and Pembroke Pines. We perform minimally invasive, cutting edge vein procedures and offer a variety of non-ablative laser techniques. We get rid of unwanted varicose and spider veins and help people’s legs with swelling, aching, heaviness. We have amazing healing times for venous stasis ulcers and can improve the way people’s legs look and feel with all degrees of vein disease. We offer procedures to help improve the discoloration

associated with vein disease that other doctors cannot address. We offer the Picoway laser, one of the best and fastest lasers available to remove tattoos and skin spots and discolorations. It also works well at smoothing wrinkles, erasing acne scars and other scars. In a matter of minutes, the Picoway can smooth wrinkles, build collage and remove discolorations and refine scars. Describe your (Dr. Fox) experience. I (Dr. Fox) trained at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. I started the first Vascular Medicine Department and Vein Center at University Hospital’s Before Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. I have been featured as a vein and laser expert nationally and internationally, and have been on multiple news programs in America After and Latin America. Fox Vein and Laser Experts has served as a training facility for multiple national corporations. Why should patients visit Fox Vein and Laser Experts vs. other practices? We are recognized experts in the field of vein disease and lasers. We have certified ultrasonographers that provide in depth vascular exams and offer excellent care and service to our patients. I was one of the first physicians to perform Endovenous Laser Ablations in Ohio and nationally. I was one of the first in Florida to perform Clarivein procedures and have been performing ultrasound

guided sclerotherapy and foam for decades. Describe some of the procedures you offer? We offer the newest and best miniammly invasive vein procedures, including Endvenous laser Ablation, Venaseal, Veingogh, Laser spider vein removal, Phlebectomies, Foam sclerotherapy and ultrasound guided foam sclerotherapy. Most of these procedures are performed in under 30 minutes with often no incisions necessary to remove those unsightly veins. We also offer hair removal, spot removal and spider vein removal with the Gentle Max Pro laser. This is one of the best and fastest lasers on the market to remove unwanted hair on any skin color. We also offer tattoo removal and skin rejuvenation with the Picoway Laser. This laser removes tattoos much faster than others on the market and uses vibrational energy to shatter the ink particles, so the ink goes away much faster than other nano lasers. Resolve by Picoway shrinks pores, tightens skin, erases acne scars and sun spots and discolorations while building collagen with little to no down time. It is literally a lunchtime make over. Where are the procedures performed? All vein procedures are done in the office, most in less than 30 minutes. We can get rid of those large varicose veins, and pain and swelling, during your lunch break. What is vein disease and how does it progress? Veins are blood vessels that carry blood back to the heart. When the valves in the veins are not working correctly, instead of all the blood going back to the heart, some drips slowly downward causing the blood to pool and the legs to feel heavy, achy and

he Diagnosis and al & Laser Procedures tired. The legs start to look more and more discolored and more veins appear and the ankles start to turn blue and brown. Over time, the ankles swell and the skin scars down and hardens. The veins bulge more and more, and more skin changes occur. Venous eczema develops and gradually people can get lipodermatosclerosis, atrophie blanche and ulcers. Bleeding veins are also a problem, and the bleeding is very difficult to control. What should people do about

Before

After

vein disease? Patients should call for a consultation and have an ultrasound to diagnose the source of their vein problems. Until the appointment, patients should elevate their legs, wear compression hose, and take antiinflammatories for their pain. Why do people remove tattoos? People are often very excited when they get a tattoo. However, over time, this happiness can fade. Having the reminder of an ex or something that one is no longer involved with is not appealing. Many times, people want to climb the corporate ladder and various companies have policies about covering or removing tattoos in visible areas. Some people want

more space for more ink. Some tattoos are done wrong and people are not happy from the beginning. Whatever the reason for removal, Picoway laser is the best tattoo removal laser out there. It removes all colors of ink on any skin type faster and better. It removes the tattoos in fewer treatment sessions and with less pain than other lasers. What else is Picoway used for besides tattoos? Resolve by Picoway is used to remove skin discolorations with aging. It helps build collagen, fade sun spots, refine pores, tighten skin and reduce wrinkles. It is also used to fade spots and help tighten and refine the décolleté and people’s hands. It is FDA approved for the removal of acne scars and can help fade and refine scars of all types especially after breast augmentation, C-sections and tummy tucks. Picoway is fast, effective and has really no down time. You look amazing almost immediately. What does the Gentle Max Pro Laser do? It can remove spider veins, sun spots or discolorations, and is amazing at removing unwanted hair. It has one of the largest spot sizes on the market and can remove hair super fast with little to no pain on every skin color. As well, it works great for laser facials and building collagen.

COMMUNITY NEWS

NMB Get Out and Play – Kids to Parks Day 2018 BY BEVERLY PERKINS

L

aunched in 2011, Kids to Parks Day was created by National Park Trust as a vehicle to connect children and their families with their local, state, national parks, and public lands. The celebratory day is held each year on the third Saturday of May throughout the country. Last year, the City of North Miami Beach Parks & R.E.C. Department coordinated a wide array of park activities at each of the five community centers. Kids at the Ronald A. Silver “Y.E.S.” Center learned about the life cycle of a monarch butterfly using a live monarch caterpillar. Highland Village Community Centers had kids participating in a nature walk and creating nature crafts using leaves, branches and flowers. Everyone at each community center also planted seeds of various crops in their gardens, including okra, peppers, sweet potatoes and eggplant. This year it falls on May 19th, and the City of North Miami Beach Parks & R.E.C. will participate in the nationwide celebration at just one location. The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. at Allen Park/DeLeonardis Youth Center, 1770 NE 162nd Street, NMB, and will consist of a field day for all to enjoy.

“Having it at one location will bring all of the kids in the community together in one place, allowing them to interact not only with nature, but with each other,” said Mayor George Vallejo. From kite flying to fishing and strawberry picking to scavenger hunts, the nationwide initiative has everyone outside being active and enjoying their environments while engaging families in all that Mother Nature has to offer. By discovering and exploring the nation’s public lands, kids across the country can learn about park stewardship, outdoor recreation, STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), and the history of our country. Additionally, by teaching today’s youth to appreciate and enjoy our public lands, the opportunity fosters future outdoor enthusiasts and creates the next generation of park stewards and caretakers of these important places. “Kids to Parks Day attracts first-time park visitors as well as existing park enthusiasts. Together we will be able to protect and preserve our country’s public lands and waters by cultivating passionate park advocates and stewards,” explains Aja Dorsainvil, Marketing Specialist for NMB Division of Public Affairs & Community Engagement. “Because kids need parks and parks need kids!”

The NMBPD can provide security survey recommendations where the purpose of the survey is only advisory and is not intended to identify security weaknesses or to warrant the adequacy of all present and future security measures whether or not recommended. ▸▸ Drapes and Shades – Draw the drapes and pull the shades. If the drapes are thin or worn, you want to consider investing in a heavier fabric to prevent silhouetting. ▸▸ Outdoor Lighting – Good outdoor lighting will deter crime greatly. Lighting around doors and corners are important. Driveways and parking areas need lighting also. Motion detectors for exterior lighting are highly recommended. Also, installation with grounds light will help walkways and doorways. ▸▸ Shrubs and Bushes – Shrubs and bushes should be kept trimmed for consistent shape, which will make it easier to detect motion near windows. Replace or trim large shrubs and bushes near doorways and windows. It is recommended that bushes near windows be kept at least 6” below the hedge. ▸▸ Door and Locks – Invest in solid door and good locks (i.e., deadbolts). One-waypeep-hole is recommended. Keep door rooms closed and locked for safety. ▸▸ Windows -Windows should have locks and be kept locked. Windows are often used as an entry point for criminals. ▸▸ Spare Key – Hiding a spare key outside a residence is dangerous. Leave a spare key with a family member or trusted friend.

Out And About:

▸▸ Stopping mail – If you are planning to be gone for an extended period of time, consider stopping your mail or have a trusted person pick it up. ▸▸ Prepare for your return – Leave lights on inside and outside. Television and radio can be placed on timers as well. ▸▸ Neighbors – Get to know your neighbors and feel out who you can trust (longterm owners/renters). Watch out for each other. Exchange phone numbers if trust is established for emergency purposes. ▸▸ Returning Home – Be cautious. If you see anything out of the ordinary, call the police and let them investigate In closing, these tips are actually preparatory steps for your overall safety. Without preparation, you may increase your statistically significant chances of being selected as a target. The suggestions are not “foolproof” as nothing works all the time and there are no guarantees; however, being aware of yourself and your surroundings is probably the most important aspect of avoidance. To learn more about the City of North Miami Beach Police Department, please visit www.citynmb. com. For emergencies, please dial 9-1-1 and all other non-emergencies, please call (305) NMB-POLICE or (305) 662-7654. 22 MAY 2018 | OURCITYAVENTURA.COM

ASK THE EXPERT

What is Ankylosing Spondylitis? BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O.

SUPERMAID WE’LL SWEEP YOU OFF YOUR FEET

T

he first response to a diagnosis of Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is usually, “What in the world is that?” The second response is, “How do you say that?” Although, it’s strange sounding (ANK-ki-low-sing spon-di-LIE-tis), there are more than 200,000 US cases per year. Unlike typical back pain which is caused by some type of trauma to the spine, AS is a chronic condition caused by inflammation of the vertebrae. The inflammatory arthritis affects the spine and large joints making it a form of spinal arthritis. In advanced and more severe cases, abnormal bone growth in the spine may cause the joints to fuse together resulting in an inflexible spine reducing mobility. Sometimes, it results in a forward-stooped posture. AS can also affect other areas of the body, this may include pain and tenderness in the shoulders, hips, ribs, and even heels. Additionally, pain and stiffness may spread into the neck over the course of time. The good news is that it can be treated by a medical professional. AS occurs when the immune system attacks healthy joints, mainly in the spine. The immune’s response is what causes the inflammation. The condition usually begins in early adulthood, in the late teens, and has been more prevalent in men, but women are susceptible to it just the same. However, AS can still develop at any age. It’s been known to be an inherited disease although not everyone with the gene will ever develop it. Symptoms always include pain and stiffness from the neck down to the lower back. Spondylitis often starts at the sacrum (the lowest part of the spine). Pain in the back and joints are also common along with intermittent flare-ups of spinal pain. It could be mild or severe, and eventually lead to a hunched over posture. Unfortunately, the disease can also affect other ligaments and tendons, as well as the eyes and intestines. Some patients experience vision problems, and inflammation in the knees, ankles, and beneath the heel. Fever, fatigue, and loss of appetite may also occur. Typical warning signs of the disease are: ▸▸ Unexplained lower back pain for no apparent reason ▸▸ Unexplained tightness in the chest, pain in heel, and joints ▸▸ Pain comes and goes, but significantly is getting worse up the spine ▸▸ Temporary relief from over-the-counter medications ▸▸ Family history of AS Nonetheless, early intervention and treatment can help control pain and stiffness and may reduce or prevent deformity. A physician cannot give a single test to diagnose AS, but an extremely detailed exam and patient history will help determine the diagnosis. The physician may also order imaging tests such as an MRI, or x-ray. Treatment includes medication, physical therapy, and in rare cases surgery. Remember, it’s always important to not ignore symptoms. If left untreated, over an extended period of time, AS can become persistent and can occur in other parts of the body. Make an appointment to see a physician as soon as any signs exist. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. SCHOOL NEWS

ACES Students of Today Are Future Leaders of Tomorrow BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

here is no doubt that the Aventura City of Excellence School (ACES) is raising its students to be positive and inspiring members of society. Besides demonstrating leadership abilities, the determined and dedicated students have also shown compassion by their involvement in charitable work this past spring. First, ACES students E. Landauer and D. Friedland traveled to Tallahassee to participate in the Florida House of Representatives Page and Messenger Program. As House Pages, the duo was responsible for delivering letters, messages, and miscellaneous items to representatives and house staff. This out-ofschool experience afforded the students an amazing opportunity to observe lawmakers during the 2018

Regular Session in the State’s Capitol. They also were able to participate in mock trials and had an exclusive invitation to visit the Governor’s Mansion. Next, more leaders on the rise were the National Junior Honor Society members who attended the State Leadership Summit. The ambitious group traveled to Orlando to gain experience on building leadership skills within their school and community and learned how to motivate others in creating a better world. Students worked alongside high school students to learn what it means to be a leader and how they could use their leadership skills to help initiate and/or support activities benefiting their communities. The goal of the State Summit was to cultivate student empowerment and leadership. Finally, all ACES students participated in a

week-long rally to raise awareness and funds during “Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Week”. For the thirteenth consecutive year, ACES has been raising and donating monies to the National Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The school is doing their part to find a cure for the genetic disease that affects 30,000 children and young adults in the United States. This year’s slogan was “Help Our Students Become Cure Finders”. Apart from holding classroom fundraisers, other events such as a dress down day known as “Genes for Jeans”, and a school wide bake sale took place. Also, in attendance was teen author and Miss Florida Teen USA 2017 winner, Victoria Di Sorbo. She read her book Julie’s Adventure with Cystic Fibrosis to all kindergarten, first and second grade students. “In the past 13 years ACES has raised an amazing $65,000 that has been donated to fund research to help find a cure,” said Ms. Zita De Vita, ACES teacher and coordinator of the event “Yet just as important, is that all students understand a little about this disease, feel compassion for those that have it and know that their actions and participation Ms. Zita De Vita can truly be part of the solution.”

Thousands of college students have been known to travel to the infamous Ft. Lauderdale Beach for spring break. According to AAA, it’s the nation’s second-most popular spring break destination. From the beaches to the historic bars, fun in the sun is always on the curriculum. Jordyn, an FGCU Eagle, ventured up to Ft. Lauderdale Beach for a stay at the Harbor Beach Marriott Resort & Spa. ASK THE EXPERT

Dental 411 - Fear No More BY DR. MICHAEL JACOBS, DMD

P

atients fear the dentist. We get it. Instruments that look like they could be used in a medieval torture room (and, we don’t have names like Iron Maiden to make it seem cool); terms like root canals and open flap osseous surgery; four hands in your mouth at the same time; people asking you to stay open for what seems like an eternity. Water filling your mouth and running down your neck. It might seem like legitimized torture. Well, here’s the deal… patients, who are brave enough to slide into a dental chair, really have nothing to fear. Assuming they find a friendly neighborhood dentist, who takes the time to thoroughly explain the state of their mouth, what they need and why the work needs to be done. A cavity forms when the pH level on a tooth falls below a critical level. Sugary foods are more acidic and lower on the pH scale. This process could take less than 24 hours to occur. So, brushing away food after every meal can save you big time!

Proper brushing follows the Modified Bass technique and centers around doing light, circular motions at a 45-degree angle to the gum line. Each toothbrushing session should last two minutes where each quadrant of the mouth gets 30 seconds of your attention. Furthermore, patients are miffed as to why one of their teeth broke – they were only eating soup or something non-threatening like low-fat yogurt or something gluten-free. People feel like it’s always the piece of bread that broke the tooth’s back. That soft morsel of challah they downed was actually the final biting blow. Most often, teeth break down over a period and due to the cumulative cause of biting forces from strong facial muscles and grinding from stress. Not the marble rye. Patient education is a dental necessity to reduce panic and stress. Terms need to be conveyed in a gentle, natural manner without the scientific nerdiness that the world of dentistry loves to champion. This leads to patient comfort and a higher level of trust in that Iron Maiden of a dental chair. The mouth is a gateway to the rest of the body. Studies show direct a correlation between build-up of plaque in the mouth and cardiovascular disease. Oral health is extremely important. Without it, patients cannot enjoy some of the best tastes of life. Any barriers that might preclude a patient from going to the dentist need to be overcome. Hopefully, after reading these clear, concise, gracefully explained insights, the only fear patients will have is the fear of not going to the dentist, itself.

SO PROUD

The City of North Miami Beach hosted its annual Youth Symposium for teens ages 12-18 at the Ronald A. Silver “Y.E.S.” Center/Marjorie & William McDonald Center. This year’s theme was “Be Proud of Who You Are.” It was a great forum for the youth in our community to share their views on current events and issues.

NMB HAS A BIG HEART

The 5th Annual Heart Health Walk featured a 2.6 mile walk around beautiful Snake Creek Canal, Farmer’s Market, Food Vendors, Health & Information Booths, Raffles, Prizes and more at the Patricia A. Mishcon Athletic Field.

LET MY PEOPLE GO

The festival of Passover commemorates the freedom of the Jewish nation from enslavement in Ancient Egypt in 1313 BCE. Family and friends gathered as the four cups of wine were poured, the four questions asked, and the Matzah served during Chabad Chayil’s traditional Seder presented by Rabbi Moishe Kievman. The children also had the opportunity to make, bake, and enjoy their own matzah.
