If you had the chance to be revived in the future, would you take it? WHAT IS CRYONICS? Cryonics is an effort to save lives by using temperatures so cold that a person beyond help by today’s medicine might be preserved for decades or centuries until a future medical technology can restore that person to full health. Cryonics is a second chance at life. It is the reasoned belief in the advancement of future medicinal technologies being able to cure things we can’t today.

Let’s Celebrate Earth Day

E

very year, on April 22nd, people around the world recognize the importance of preserving and protecting our natural environment. Earth Day, as we call it today, was proposed by Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson and founded in 1970. Since then, it has evolved from a day for teachers to focus on nature to a global rally day for environmentalists. Locally, Earth Day is a great day to celebrate the wonders of South Florida. Some of the best beaches in the world are just a few miles away. The Everglades, which is both an exciting natural refuge to visit and a critically important ecosystem, is right in our back yard. Just off shore, there are miles of coral reefs full of fish and wildlife. Preserving the beauty and splendor of our natural environment is critical for the continued enjoyment of this wonderful community. This year, let’s celebrate Earth Day by taking a step back from our fast-paced digital world and recognizing the splendor of the environment around us. You could visit the Long Key Nature Center in Davie, take an airboat ride through the Everglades, dip your toes in the surf, or simply spend a few hours at one our wonderful local parks. Whatever you do, feel fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful places on earth. Sincerely,

Aventura Police Department Bike Safety Event Got Residents in Gear COMMUNITY NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

I

t was a beautiful Sunday morning when friends, family, and neighbors were invited to take a bike ride with the local police department and learn about bicycle safety at Founders Park. The bike safety and ride event was hosted by the City of Aventura and the Aventura Police Department in an effort to promote safe cycling practices. Participants were encouraged to bring their own bicycles, and were given a ride test. Those who demonstrated the ability to ride were then able to do so with members of the Aventura Police Department. The escorted ride took a safe route around the City of Aventura and stopped at various parks along the way. Beginners and parents with young children on smaller bikes and tricycles were able to participate in an alternative ride within Founders Park. Fun activities such as a bike rodeo was available as well as a disc jockey to keep the tikes on trikes motivated. Before the ride, a variety of bike safety presentations were given and a limited number of helmets,

bicycle lights, and bike water bottles were distributed. Participants also had the opportunity to ask police officers questions about bike safety, get helmets fitted, and speak with representatives of one the newest City programs, Aventura B-Cycle, a bike share system. In a bike friendly community it’s important to be reminded of simple safe riding rules. The Aventura Police Department advises the same important reminders just as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) does for cyclists. When riding, always: ▸▸ Wear a properly fitted bicycle helmet. ▸▸ Inspect your bicycle to be sure all parts are secure and working properly. ▸▸ Adjust your bicycle to fit. ▸▸ Check the tires and brakes. ▸▸ Always keep at least one hand on the handlebars. ▸▸ See and Be Seen. ▸▸ Go With the Traffic Flow.

▸▸ Obey All Traffic Laws. ▸▸ Yield to Traffic When Appropriate. ▸▸ Be Predictable. ▸▸ Stay Alert at All Times. ▸▸ Look Before Turning. ▸▸ Watch for Parked Cars. ▸▸ Avoid Riding at Night. Unfortunately, many bicycle-related accidents resulting in injury or death are oftentimes associated with the bicyclist’s behavior and not those in motor vehicles. These include not wearing a helmet, riding in the street without stopping, turning left or swerving into traffic that is coming from behind, running a stop sign, and/or riding the wrong way in traffic. The Aventura Police Department wants to maximize everyone’s safety. Always wear a helmet and always follow the rules of the road. For more information, please contact the City of Aventura Community Services Department at 305-466-8930.

any look forward to supporting the anticipated event each year which honors fallen Florida Law Enforcement Officers. This year the “20th Annual Florida Tour de Force” will benefit the families of all fallen Florida Law Enforcement Officers that were lost in the line of duty during 2016. The 2017 Florida Tour de Force police charity ride will depart on April 3rd in North Miami Beach and end in Daytona Beach Shores on April 7th. The 270-mile Tour is a 5-day ride averaging approximately 50-55 miles each day at a moderate pace of 15-17 miles per hour, and will pass through 41 law enforcement jurisdictions. Breaks are scheduled approximately every 12 miles to accommodate both seasoned and inexperienced cyclists. It’s important to know that this is an awareness ride, not a race. The Tour is fully supported with police escorts provided by the Florida Highway Patrol, Sheriff’s Departments and local Law Enforcement Agencies throughout the state. It is organized and manned by devoted volunteers, and every single dollar raised through both the public and private sectors is donated to the families of our fallen heroes, except for a small amount of funds to pay for start-up expenses. In 1997, the inaugural Florida Tour de Force Ride was dedicated to Florida Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Smith who was killed in the line of duty by a drunk driver. The TDF was founded by Detective

APRIL 2017 | OUR CITY AVENTURA

Mike DeMarcus (retired) of the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) to remember and honor those who have made the supreme sacrifice to make their communities safe. Each year the Tour has grown in size and has proudly raised $200,000. Last year over 800 law enforcement personnel and civilians from across the state participated with over 100 riders completing the entire 270-mile trek. The Tour has conducted rides to benefit organizations such as Concerns of Police Survivors and the Jimmy Rice Foundation. For the past twenty years, citizens, sponsors, media, and various Law Enforcement Agencies throughout the state have supported the efforts which culminate with a ceremony in May to present checks to the surviving family members of the Fallen Heroes. This year’s ride starts promptly at 10:00am and departs from Denny’s at 1450 NE Miami Gardens Drive, North Miami Beach. It is highly suggested to please arrive one hour prior to the departure. To support the families of the Florida fallen heroes who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to their communities please donate at www. floridatourdeforce.org. Please direct all motor and traffic escort support to traffic coordinator (motor escorts), Detective Rafael Florencio at Rafael. Florencio@nmbpd.org.

oes this sound familiar? Your child comes home from school and while sitting in the kitchen over a snack, you engage in a wonderful conversation about the school day. When you ask about the day’s homework, chaos erupts! Your child can’t remember the assignment details. You calmly ask if they were written down in the daily planner and receive the response that the planner has been lost for weeks, but all the information is on a scrap of paper somewhere. Your child is now frantically searching the backpack for that scrap of paper and your floor becomes littered with crumbled papers. You then remember that you can view homework on the school’s website. All will be well! But then no one (including you!) can remember how to log into the website. And this is not the first time. For many children (and many of us adults), organizational skills and time management pose huge obstacles. In education, we refer to these as executive functioning skills, which is defined as a set of processes that all have to do with managing one’s self and one’s resources in order to achieve a goal. (Cooper-Kahn and Dietzel) Here are some pointers to help your child develop executive functioning skills to set them up for success. ▸▸ Ask your child’s teacher to provide a pack up checklist for the end of each day, including: ▸▸ Did I write down my assignments? ▸▸ How long should it take to complete each item? ▸▸ ·Do I have the correct materials? ▸▸ child to cross off items as they are completed. ▸▸ Make sure your child knows how to log into the classroom’s web page, which should have a syllabus, homework and test dates. ▸▸ Establish a consistent routine and a neat physical space to complete homework at home. ▸▸ Keep school supplies on hand. ▸▸ Keep a timer available; cellphones have timers! ▸▸ Post a calendar for long-term assignments and create a timeline. ▸▸ Build in breaks: work/break/work/ break. ▸▸ If writing is laborious for your child, encourage use of computer. ▸▸ Encourage reviewing and proofreading. ▸▸ Provide written reminders to place completed work into the appropriate folder in the backpack. ▸▸ Reinforce and praise effort. ▸▸ Place completed homework in the backpack, placed by the front door, ready for the morning. If assignments are digital, make sure your child has uploaded them or clicked “submit”. ▸▸ Encourage weekly backpack checks. Eliminate unnecessary items. ▸▸ Be sure not to over-program extracurricular activities. ▸▸ Make sure the whole family eats well and gets enough sleep. ▸▸ Stay calm. Your child follows your lead. We live in a digital world and, thankfully, many tools exist to help your child and you find success. From early childhood through Grade 12, Scheck Hillel Community School educates and inspires students to become exemplary global citizens with enduring Jewish identity and values through an individualized college preparatory curriculum highlighted by STEM and design, Capstone, college dual enrollment, arts, athletics and service learning. One Million Men are Being Made at ACES

SCHOOL NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he Aventura City of Excellence School is excited about their program that launched just last month. “One Million Men in the Making” is the school’s amazing new mentorship program based largely on Jonathan Catherman’s book, “The Manual to Manliness”. Catherman, author and program founder, visited with several guests to speak with the students about the impactful program and to share his books. The educational book teaches some important life skills and character traits that are often forgotten, or not often practiced. These include general etiquette such as shaking hands and opening doors, as well as other tools to succeed in life such as writing a resume and managing money. The book goes on to teach how to tie a tie, plan a date, grill a steak, and even change a tire. Catherman offers a collection of great advise to prepare adolescents and already grown men how to be a capable, trustworthy and confident leaders. All male students in fifth through eighth grades were invited to attend the “Men in the Making” presentation which included lessons from each individual speaker. Additionally, the twenty-seven students who signed up for the program were being celebrated. These young men arrive one hour before school each Wednesday morning to participate in group discussions and practice Catherman’s teachings. In addition to the 27 young club members, more than 215 of their male class-

mates attended the event at the Aventura Arts & Cultural Center with parents, faculty, and community leaders, including Aventura City Manager Eric Soroka and Commissioner Linda Marks. The club members proudly wore their logo t-shirts with the slogan;” Skills make a man valuable. His character makes him invaluable.” The school club, already known as “1M” was launched by Principal Julie Alm and implemented by ACES Dean of Students Anthony Tyrkala and teacher Bill Sorscher, who serve as club mentors. The event, emceed by Tyrkala, featured testimonials from some of the boys in the club and presentations by Catherman, Ohslon, Sorscher and guest speaker Greg Brown, head baseball coach at Nova Southeastern University. “I am passionate about mentoring programs in school because I believe that relationships are very important for success. Establishing mentor/mentee relationships and providing opportunities for students to develop unique relationships within the mentoring group are powerful ways to guide students into adulthood,” says Tyrkala. “The strength of 1M is that it provides those opportunities for relationship building while also purposefully teaching valuable skills.” “We are rolling out nationwide,” Catherman said. “This is our first Men in the Making Club, and our goal is in our name: to provide a mentoring resource for a million young men in the United States.”

The Cultural Arts Day Tradition Continues at Highland Oaks Elementary BY BEVERLY PERKINS

V

irginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary School has had a long standing tradition of celebrating and appreciating the arts. This year they are celebrating the 51st anniversary of Cultural Arts Day. On this dedicated day, artists from throughout the community visited the school to share their talents and to demonstrate their knowledge and skills of a great variety of artistry. Despite the amount of artists it took to make this event a success, the day was also made possible by over 50 volunteers that gave their time and assistance. The purpose of the special yearly event is to introduce students to artistic activities at every level that they can pursue in middle school, high school and beyond. The true lesson is that art has no age. Everyone can be an artist no matter how old they are. “Cultural Arts Day is a day to change gears and focus on the wonderful artistries that abound in our community,” says Rachel Seifer, Event Co-Chairperson. “This day gives our children the opportunity to see these performances up close and in a hands on way.” During Cultural Arts Day, the entire school population of 700 students, grades Pre-K-fifth grades, are encouraged to participate and interact with the 24 performing artist groups. The annual event has, for over five decades, exposed students to the many forms of the arts, from painting and violins to ballet and Tae Kwon Do. “We thank all of the amazing artists who give their time to our school for this event,” said Kara Friedman, Event Co-Chairperson. “The smiles on the faces of the students says it all.” Many of these professional performers are Highland Oaks alumni, parents or

relatives of alumni which make the connection even greater. In addition, others were student artists visiting from Highland Oaks Middle and Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior High schools, who performed in areas such as Band, Drumline, Chorus,

Drama, Dance, Visual Arts, and Cheerleading. “For 51 years, artists from our dynamic community have come to VABHOE to expose our students to various forms of visual and performing arts. Cultural Arts Day reminds us that educating young minds must always include these beautiful forms of expression,” says Principal Scott Saperstein. “I am so grateful to the PTA’s Cultural Arts Day Committee for coordinating this fantastic event. It goes without saying, that these artists are not just entertaining our students but encouraging them to pick up an instrument, take a dance class or create a painting. Lives are being transformed and I can’t thank our artists enough for their time and enthusiasm.” Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary is located at 20500 NE 24th Avenue, Miami. By Beverly Perkins ollywood Beach’s iconic property, The Diplomat Beach Resort, is currently wrapping up its $100 million transformation. The popular high-energy destination property, from coast to Intracoastal, will offer multidimensional entertainment experiences and programming that will pay homage to the hotel’s legendary past, which originated in 1925. Included in the dramatic metamorphosis is the introduction of the Diplomat Restaurant Group by the Howard Wein Hospitality Group (HWH), The Diplomat Beach Resort and Thayer Lodging Group. The exclusive group is comprised of more than 10 innovative culinary destinations that range from chef-driven restaurants to uniquely branded accessible eateries to a casual grab-and-go market and a family-friendly sweets shop. The bar offerings, also led by HWH, will feature cocktail creations from acclaimed bartender Willy Shine. “It has been exceptionally difficult to keep this secret under wraps and we are excited to finally unveil our larger plans for the new culinary program at The Diplomat Beach Resort,” says Howard Wein, Founder of Howard Wein Hospitality and The Diplomat Restaurant Group. “We have top chefs from across the country creat-

Celebrity Chef Geoffrey Zakarian Creates Exclusive New Restaurant for the Diplomat Beach Resort ing brand new concepts juxtaposed with completely original restaurants and culinary experiences that can’t be found anywhere else in the country. The Diplomat is set to become the top culinary destination in South Florida.” Geoffrey Zakarian, celebrity chef, restaurateur, and television star recently had the grand opening of Point Royal, his exclusive creation for the Diplomat Beach Resort. The Coastal American restaurant and bar is an accessible, modern take on a coastal-influenced brasserie. When asked why he chose Hollywood Beach, Florida to open a new restaurant, Zakarian responded, “Simply because The Diplomat Beach

Resort asked me to help them with a cool concept. I’ve always travelled to Hollywood, but this was a tremendous opportunity to do really good food and beverage just outside of Miami.” The indooroutdoor venue features the property’s only raw bar and a menu featuring the full gamete of Zakarian’s Coastal American cuisine. “I chose to do Coastal American cuisine because seafood is a large part of Florida life, but not just seafood. There is an abundance of terrific local vegetables and non-seafood products that I wanted to highlight,” added Zakarian. Complimented by a center bar focused on fresh juice based cocktails and the largest wine list on property,

“I love the Seafood Tower and our Hamachi Crudo,” says Zakarian. “It’s perfect for the beach!”

Point Royal delivers a lively bustling environment and is open for breakfast and dinner daily. Upon entering the casually elegant oceanfront restaurant, guests are greeted by warm and welcoming hostesses into a foodie’s paradise. The interior incorporates plenty of assorted tropical foliage along with ambient light, rustic shiplap, and plantation shutters for a cozy island atmosphere with a modern vibe. Chef Zakarian’s signature style and sophisticated taste is evident throughout the menu. Starters such as Towering Raw Seafood Platters stacked with oysters, clams, cold poached prawns, and Alaskan king crab legs, Yellowfin tuna tartare, and unique salad creations including Spinach and Wild Arugula drizzled with a carrotcardamom yogurt and topped with grapefruit and pumpkin seed dukkah are just a couple examples of the many options. Main dinner entrees cover the spectrum from various seafood entrees

Miami Beach, but with a more recent push farther north into places like Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach. With Point Royal, we’re trying to bring a new level of sophistication to Hollywood and Hallandale Beach.” In addition to the distinctive restaurant, Geoffrey Zakarian created Counter Point to be an extension of Point Royal. Designed for everyday convenience but dedicated to Chef Zakarian’s commitment to quality, Counter Point offers the best coffee and fresh juice in Hollywood. The casual hotspot, with an option for carry-out or dine-in, is the place for specialty espresso drinks, cold brew coffee and a daily selection of house baked breakfast pastries, salads and sandwiches with wine, beer and savory snacks for later in the day and evening. The Chopped judge and Iron Chef winner plans on elevating the Broward food scene, and invites locals in addition to hotel guests, and convention attendees to come and experience the new oceanfront eatery. Diplomat Beach Resort will emerge as Hollywood’s newest icon, offering a fresh, new way to vacation. Boasting an oceanfront location, the 998-room resort will feature more ten culinary destinations, reimagined public spaces, a re-energized spa experience and more than 50,000 square feet of meetings and events space.

to Short Ribs, Organic Chicken and a traditional American burger, but all with a twist. The side dish offerings such as Crispy Brussel Sprouts finished with shaved green apple, Roasted Sea Salt and Rosemary Potatoes, and Roasted Japanese Eggplant are just a few of the delicious highlights. The decadent desserts are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth and are the perfect way to end the meal. Bananas Foster Crème Brulee Tart, Caramel & Coffee Tiramisu, Chocolate Budino, and of course, Key Lime Pie are just a few available. However, the tangy, creamy yellow-filled southern specialty isn’t served in typical form. It is covered in a crispy meringue coating and garnished with graham cracker crumble. “I love the Seafood Tower and our Hamachi Crudo,” says Zakarian. “It’s perfect for the beach!” Beyond the food menu is an exclusive list of specialty cocktails created by America’s world-renowned mixologist, Brian Van Flandern. The spirits historian, and award-winning cocktail book author created original recipes exclusively for Point Royal. One of these distinctive libations is “The Very Last Word”, a variation of the 1920s classic “The Last Word”. The hand-crafted cocktail uses fresh squeezed lime juice with a touch of cane sugar syrup and is garnished with brandy-soaked cherries to differentiate from the original version. The accomplished chef, host and culinary consultant says, “South Florida has earned a reputation over the last few years for its growing food scene. The City of NMB Showed They Have a Big Heart COMMUNITY NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

T

he morning had great weather and a great turn out for the 4th Heart Health Walk, hosted by The City of North Miami Beach and the Commission on the Status of Women, Beth E. Spiegel, Liaison. Approximately 1,000 people come out to raise awareness about heart disease in women. The annual event took place at the Patricia A. Mishcon Athletic Complex, and featured a 2.6 mile walk around the beautiful Snake Creek Canal. Erica Rakow of Local 10 hosted the event along with co-host Gigi Diaz of 93.9 radio. E.J. Biggers, NFL football cornerback and hometown hero, was also in attendance. Heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States. However, it is the most preventable. Events such as these showcase ways individuals can become knowledgeable and make better heart-healthy choices. The Heart Foundation says that knowing your family health history and the risk factors for heart disease, having regular check-ups and working with your physician to manage your health are all integral aspects of saving lives from this often silent killer. This year’s attractions were the AET Kids Fit & Fun Bus for kids 10 and younger, Carnival Full of Fitness interactive games arena, an inflatable obstacle course, Health Village, Walk-With-A-Cop, a Krav Maga demonstration by M2

Productions, a Zumba session by Fitness by Fernando, and dance performance by Universal Dance Studios Dance Team. Mount Sinai Sports Cardiologist Dr. Jeffrey Lin was a guest speaker. Other highlights included many health and information booths, food vendors, raffles, and prizes all in an effort to raise awareness and educate the community during February’s Heart Health Month. New this year was the addition of a Survivor’s booth. Heart survivors were honored with a ribbon and pin and then presented with a framed, signed piece of art by neo-pop artist Romero Britto. The long-time sponsor and presenter of the Heart Health Walk was Macken. Official sponsors included, NMB CRA, Wigley Foot & Ankle, Boca Juniors, Afin, Florida Blue, Dezer, Mount Sinai and Voda. Supporting sponsors included NMB Little League, Duffy’s, Hand & Stone, Waste Management, Sun Kidz Dental, and Coca-Cola. Friends of Heart Walk included Madalon Law, Houston’s, Publix, PF Chang’s, Outback, Ale House, and Miami Marlins. Houston’s, Publix, Outback and Ale House provided gift cards and Miami Marlins donated tickets, which were raffled off to attendees. Newly opened Vicky Bakery in North Miami Beach donated pastelitos and Aventura’s PF Chang’s generously provided complimentary entrees for the VIP section.

Puppy Love – A Paws-itively Amazing Good Deed INSPIRING INDIVIDUAL

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

K

imberly Kimmel, an obsessed animal lover, always finds herself watching “funny” dog videos on social media. However, one afternoon, a video caught her eye about homeless dogs needing beds. It was at that moment that she knew she wanted to do something to help. Her own dogs, English Bulldogs, Izzy and Rizzo, have their own bedrooms complete with two dog-sized “human” beds, so it was a natural solution that Kimmel decided that she need to give less fortunate canines beds of their own. Ironically, her neighbor Kimberly happens to work for the Humane Society of Greater Miami. After asking if the shelter dogs are in need of beds, she got the answer she needed and made a plan. She instantly was committed to helping the shelter and blasted her project on her social media page to gain support and inspire others to do the same for a cause they love. She then went to the local superstore and selected and purchased ten beds to bring to the Humane Society of Greater Miami. The shelter volunteers eagerly awaited Kimmel’s arrival, and were thrilled to help her unload her loot. The hard part was determining who was going to be a “lucky” dog. Unfortunately, the shelter was housing more than ten dogs. “Bed Chewers” were immedi-

ately taken off the list, and Kimmel was able to personally visit with each pup and give them their new gift. “The excitement in their eyes was priceless. And only after watching the videos later did I notice how much the dogs were wagging their tails,” reflected Kimmel. “Some of them took to their bed right away. It made me wonder if it reminded them of their previous home, before being surrendered or dropped off, or abandoned.” After interacting with the playful pups, Kimmel received a background on the dogs and was shocked and heartbroken to find out how many were actually adopted, but then returned. She’s hoping that by posting her photos on social media will not just inspire others to help the animals, but provide added exposure to help those animals find fur-ever homes. “Donating money is so impersonal and you never really know where your dollar is going. There is very little gratification in signing and handing over a check, and taking on another commitment such as volunteering, a certain number of hours per week, seemed too overwhelming,” said Kimmel. “For me, donating beds was the best of both worlds. I can use my own money to purchase the beds and my own hands to deliver them. And, I can do it on my own time.”

Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital Hosted a Grand Slam Chamber Breakfast CHAMBER NEWS

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

O

ne of Aventura Marketing Council / World-Class Chamber of Commerce’s recent breakfast meetings hosted by Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital and Memorial Foundation featured Ray Negron at The Island Club at Williams Island. AMC Chair Gary Pyott of FirstService Residential welcomed the business and community leaders in attendance at the premier venue. Chantal Leconte, CEO of Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, followed with a passionate speech about how the hospital’s incredible medical team saves children’s lives each day. She then went on to talk about their signature event, Tour de Broward. The 8th annual run, walk and ride event raises funding to expand facilities and enhance programs and services for families who have children in the hospital for an extended amount of time. Negron, columnist, ESPN radio host, and author, spoke about his latest book, “Yankee Miracles: Life with the Boss and the Bronx Bombers”. The story based on his own life talks about how kindness can transform someone’s life. The story has such an impact that it is now being developed into a Broadway musical and television documentary. Negron talked about how the power of baseball had changed his life. He recounted the tale of how Yankees owner George Steinbrenner caught him spraying graffiti on the stadium walls, and how he believed in him and made him a bat boy at 17-years-old. He also shared stories

about his Hispanic heritage and his heroes. “I’m addicted to baseball, I love the game,” Negron said, emphasizing, “All George Steinbrenner ever did was make sure I was okay and doing the right thing. He didn’t overly baby me because he wanted me to grow and do something with my life.” Fast forward, and this former “teenage street punk” went on to become a successful sports executive, and now best-selling children’s book author. He also befriended many baseball superstars including Joe DiMaggio, in addition to music icons such as Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. However, one thing he never has forgotten was overhearing Joe DiMaggio tell Billy Martin, “We must always watch out for and help the kids.” “In turn, I always felt that I had to go to the players and remind them to give back, stated Negron. “I thank god for my kids being healthy because that’s the most important thing in the world.” For more information the Aventura Marketing Council / WorldClass Chamber please visit www.aventuramarketingcouncil. com or call 305-932-5334.

MESSAGE FROM THE POLICE CHIEF

Attention: VIAGRA & CIALIS Users

Stolen Airbags: A Lucrative Business BY NORTH MIAMI BEACH CHIEF OF POLICE WILLIAM “BILL” HERNANDEZ, MSM

T

he latest overnight incident in one of the neighborhoods of North Miami Beach was a rash of vehicle break-ins, in which roaming miscreants and/or thieves prowled various parking lots looking to pounce on innocent victims. Indeed, with relative ease, these criminals have been ripping out the pricey parts of the vehicles that they have been targeting - airbags. Because of their portability, the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) stated that the airbags can be easily removed as a complete module and installed as “new” by unscrupulous collision repair shops. For example, a thief pops an unprotected airbag out of a steering column by unscrewing a few bolts and snipping a couple of wires, which takes about 60 seconds. The experts say that airbags are rapidly surpassing car stereos and hubcaps as the prime target of the automotive black market. Stolen airbags are in such high demand because they have a street value to crooks. “If it wasn’t for corrupt repair shops, airbag theft wouldn’t exist”, says Jon Hoch of the NICB, which tracks auto-related theft. “They are the people recruiting crooks, and they are what driving demand.” The airbag black market is just as driven by supply and demand as any other. Because airbags are specific to car makes and models, black market dealers often put in orders for certain kinds of vehicles. For example, vehicles that made by Honda are popular targets. The dishonest mechanic, who bought the stolen airbag illegally for $200, will then charge the vehicle owners or their insurer for the full price for the replacement, thus committing insurance fraud. However, putting airbag thieves out of business is a much more daunting task, investigators note. “The problem law enforcement has is that the serial numbers on air bags are concealed inside the bag”, observes Jerry Smith, who investigates car theft in the Washington, D.C. area for the Insurance Crime Bureau. The insurance industry and police are pressing carmakers to code the bags with the vehicle’s identification number. That would allow the police to quickly check to see if the bag has been stolen, the experts say. As it now stands, the car manufacturers can design an airbag so that it will not work if it is stolen. There are a few things one can do to reduce the chances of their airbag(s) being stolen. Many of them will help prevent car theft in general: ▸▸ Use a steering wheel locking device, i.e., “The Club”. ▸▸ Park in a well-lit location ▸▸ Keep your car locked ▸▸ Do not leave valuables in plain sight. Lastly, airbag theft is a growing concern for car owners, police and insurance companies. Therefore, if you see anything at all that might be suspicious in the area; the North Miami Beach Police wants you to call 911 right away or 305-949-5500. Additionally, if you suspect Insurance Fraud or Theft, SPEAK UP! Call the NICB TOLL-FREE HOTLINE: 1-800-835-6422. Your call is free and you can remain anonymous. You can also be eligible for a reward. To learn more about the City of North Miami Beach Police Department, please visit www.citynmb.com. For emergencies, please dial 9-1-1 and all other non-emergencies, please call (305) NMB-POLICE or (305) 662-7654.

Alleviating Neck Pain BY EDWARD J. FRANKOSKI, D.O.

ASK THE EXPERT

M

any individuals suffer from chronic and acute conditions such as headaches, neck/back pain, fibromyalgia, facial pain, and sciatica to just name a few. Unfortunately, for quite some time there has been a lack of understanding in regards to chronic pain which has led to poor treatments and even worse outcomes. Neck pain is an extremely common area in which many experience discomfort. There are three general types of neck pain; ▸▸ Acute – Pain which lasts less than 4 weeks. ▸▸ Subacute – Pain which lasts 4-12 weeks. ▸▸ Chronic – Pain which last 3 or more months. Most who suffer from acute neck pain don’t even know what caused the issue, and oftentimes don’t even seek treatment. However, when the neck pain becomes subacute or chronic, then it’s likely that some form of medical guidance and/or treatment is required. Depending on the cause and conditions, there may be specific ways for effective treatments. These recommended tips can help prevent neck pain, and may also help alleviate any symptoms occurring:

Stay Hydrated

The discs between the vertebrae in the cervical spine (neck) are comprised of approximately 80 percent water at birth. However, as one ages the ratio of water decreases, which can cause the discs to lose height, the spine to come out of alignment, and the pressure on the spine to increase. Staying hydrated throughout the day can help prevent further degeneration of the cervical discs, therefore eliminating neck pain. ▸▸ Set a daily water goal. Women typically need 2.2 liters, while men need 3 liters. ▸▸ Keep a reusable water bottle nearby at all times. ▸▸ Create new daily habits such as drinking a full glass of water when waking up each day.

Limit Hand-Held Phone Use

A common habit many don’t even think about, but do all day long is cradle a phone in their neck while talking. This results in extra strain on the cervical spine. Also, many add additional stress on the neck by staring down at their phones for an extended period of time. This habit can, in fact, place up to 60 pounds of pressure on both the neck muscles and ligaments. ▸▸ Use a Bluetooth or hands-free headset. ▸▸ Hold the phone near eye level when texting or reading. ▸▸ Limit phone use when possible.

Personalized Service for over 50 years Your single source for tax preparation. $

Apply Heat Therapy

Good old-fashioned advice is to not overlook the benefits of heat therapy. Applying a heating pad or a hot water bottle for 20 minutes may produce the following benefits: ▸▸ An increase in the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the muscles encourages healing in the neck. ▸▸ The stimulation of sensory receptors in the skin hinder the transmission of pain signals to the brain. ▸▸ The stretching of soft tissues around the spine will decrease stiffness in the neck. It is suggested to try these tips even with severe neck pain, as they can provide even a little bit of relief from chronic symptoms. Edward J. Frankoski, D.O. has received extensive training in Pain Management, and always stays current with all new and up to date through many educational meetings throughout the year. He has been practicing Pain Management in the Aventura area for over fifteen years and he has been involved in drug research as well as procedure research studies. Interventional Pain Physicians of South Florida is located at 21097 NE 27th Court, Suite 340, Aventura, 33180. To schedule an appointment, please call (305)932-1660.

Q&A: Ready for a run? There’s much to know before you go. According to recent statistics, U.S. participation in running and jogging has grown 70% over Farah Tejpar, MD the past decade. Cleveland Clinic Florida In 2016, it was Sports Health Specialist estimated that over 60 million Americans were involved in the sport. The number of people running in non-traditional events like warrior and color runs has increased dramatically in the past five years. Running properly is of utmost importance, regardless of whether you’ve been running for years or just getting started, or if you’re running just for recreation or are serious about the sport and have goals to break personal bests. And sometimes it requires some trial and error to figure out what will work best for you. We asked Farah Tejpar, MD, sports health specialist, to answer key questions about running, and how runners of all types can prepare.

Q. Is running good for everyone? A. Running is a great way to boost your metabolism, burn calories and improve your cardiovascular health. But it’s important to run with proper technique and incorporate warm up and recovery exercises. Q. Are there different types of runners? A. Runners can fall into two groups. • Endurance athletes who are always training for their next marathon or striving to improve their performance • Weekend warriors who enjoy running for recreation and fitness Q. What are typical running injuries? A. Runners typically present with overuse injuries. Overuse injuries result from increased demand over time on the muscles, bones and tendons. Q. Is running bad for your joints? A. Running can help with weight maintenance and weight loss. This actually decreases the load on your joints and helps to prevent arthritis.

Q. How can a sports health specialist help? A. During your consultation, a sports health physician will address structural and functional issues that can lead to injuries. These include your individual capabilities; such as muscle strength and flexibility, as well as external factors; such as environmental conditions, running surfaces and shoe wear. To schedule a consultation with Dr. Tejpar or any other Cleveland Clinic Florida Sports Health specialist, call 866.287.2963 or visit us online at clevelandclinicflorida.org/sportshealth.
