Since the onset of the COVID-19 coronavirus we have seen the best and, at times, the worst of ourselves. Here, at Our City, we prefer to focus on the good. Our community has come together in efforts to support each other in large and small ways. Things like college students shopping for senior citizens so they won’t have to leave their homes; or, restaurant owners providing meals for families in need. These are the things that make our community strong. There is one other thing we can all do to help. Local businesses have been hurt. Many have seen their revenue drop to near zero. hether you like to run 5K’s, 10K’s, Half or Full Marathons, having the proper running shoe is the single most important factor in injury prevention for runners of any level of competition or training. Running shoes must be selected based on the following: past experience with different shoe brands; biomechanical demands specific to the gait of the runner; and environment of the running surface on which the runner will race or train. In addition, current injuries and foot type (pronated, neutral, supinated) must be addressed to maximize running efficiency. If a runner is pronated, or flat footed, they are using more muscle energy to compensate and elevate the arch to a more ideal push off position. This leads to slower racing times, more overuse injuries, and degenerative joint changes to the lower extremity. A custom orthotic can maintain the fallen arch in a more energy efficient position allowing your muscles to work less, creating potentially faster racing times, and decreasing lower extremity injury.

A supinated or high arch, that is flexible, can also cause pain and present with similar issues; this can be addressed with a custom orthotic as well. Going for a run? Check out these injury prevention tips first: How often should I replace my running shoes? It is commonly recommended to replace running shoes every 300-500 miles. This can be difficult to keep track of, so the competitive runner should keep a running calendar to calculate when they will need replacement shoes based on their daily mileage and training schedule. For the more casual runner who does not track their mileage, it takes approximately 66 hours to run 500 miles at an eight-minute per mile pace. When is the best time to try on new shoes and how do I know they fit? Always try a new pair of shoes on late afternoon. This is when your feet are the largest due to swelling from standing and activity throughout the day. Always wear a cushioned sock when trying on a new shoe. You should be able to fit your thumb’s width in between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. How many pairs of shoes should I be using at one time? For the competitive runner, two to three pairs of shoes should be used. It is best to alternate running in one pair one day then using the second pair the second day to allow full recoil of

the shoe cushioning and maximize the life of your shoes as well as decrease your chance of injury. What shoes should I wear when I’m not running or training? Never walk in flat flexible shoes, flat sandals, or barefoot; even around your house. Competitive runners use recovery sandals with arch support and a heel that is higher than the toes. Purchase a good pair of supportive house sandals to prevent stress or overuse injury secondary to lack of arch support. What are the best socks for runners? Socks are essential in terms of injury prevention and athletic performance. Synthetic Acrylic/ CoolMax® fiber socks are ideal for the distance runner in order to prevent friction skin injuries. Many running stores have sport-specific socks with thickened padding for prominent areas on the feet to prevent mechanical or shear-induced injury to the deep tissue and bone. Do I Need a Trust? BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE hould I consider creating a trust even though I don’t have a multi-million dollar estate? Gone are the days that revocable living trusts were only for wealthy individuals. Why? Because it’s now less about avoiding estate taxes and more about the cost savings and protections that trusts can provide. And a properly drafted and funded trust avoids the expense, delay and loss of privacy of probate. The following scenarios help my clients understand why a revocable living trust may be their best option: Meet our hypothetical family, George and Jenny happily married for 25 years with three children, Jessica, age 20, Josh, age 15, and Jonathan, age 12. Both George and Jenny have created wills, leaving everything to each other. After they are both gone, their wills leave it all to their children, in equal shares. Sounds like a logical plan? Maybe not. Tragically, George dies suddenly and, according to his will, all of his property transfers to Jenny. The following year, while rushing to an appointment on a rainy morning, Jenny loses control of her car and rear-ends a bus full of trial attorneys heading to the annual Ft. Lauderdale “I’ll See You in Court Convention.” Several of the attorneys are injured and predictably, lawsuits follow. Now what happens to Jenny’s inheritance from George? It’s likely all gone to creditors. What is left to raise her children? Perhaps nothing. If George and Jenny had used a trust in their estate plan, the final outcome may have been different. While Jenny’s property would still be subject to creditor claims, her inheritance from George inside a trust would be safe for her and their children. In another sad scenario, imagine that Jenny dies first. George later remarries Susan, a woman with four adult children. What happens when George passes? His property, including what he inherited from Jenny, may go to Susan and eventually to Susan’s children. George and Jenny’s children could be completely disinherited! With a properly drawn trust, George and Jenny can rest assured that even if the surviving spouse remarries, their money will go to their children. Finally, think of George and Jenny happily enjoying retirement and grandchildren, but unfortunately, they are not fond of Jessica’s husband, Robert. Jenny fears that their son-in-law will never earn a decent living, and be dependent on their daughter Jessica to support him for the rest of his life. George worries that if they leave an inheritance to Jessica and she ultimately divorces Robert, a substantial portion of Jessica’s inheritance could be lost to her “no-good husband.” If George and Jenny leave the inheritances to their children in a trust, these assets will not be commingled with marital property. Therefore, in the event of a divorce, daughter Jessica’s inheritance will not be the subject of division and partial distribution to Robert. And during the summer months, youth residents, ages 5 – 15, have a variety of exciting and challenging camp programs to choose from that will help learn new skills, and make new friends. Plantation Summer Day Camps are operated and run by the City of Plantation Parks & Recreation department. Daily activities include field trips, swimming, supervised sports, arts and crafts, movies, and more. They are held at Central Park, Volunteer Park, and Jim Ward Community Center. Adventure Camp, held at Central Park (ages 12 – 14) and Quest Camp, held at Volunteer Park (ages 9 – 11), are both designed to give teens and pre-teens a more age appropriate experience, with a higher level of activities and more specialized field trips than traditional day camp. The Golf Academy at Plantation Preserve is a great way to introduce your child, age 6 – 15 to the lifelong love of playing golf.
