Are you, or someone you know, being treated for Advanced or Metastatic Pancreatic Cancer with chemotherapy alone? Contact Dr. Robert Donoway at Atlas Oncology in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Donoway is leading a new clinical trial using multi-modality therapy: combining Pancreatic Nanoknife Ablation with chemoimmuno-radiotherapy to treat advanced stage cancer patients from around the world. With over 35 years of experience performing pancreatic surgery in South Florida, Dr. Donoway recognized that, because of its late diagnosis, up to 85% of the patients treated with surgery for pancreatic cancer already had metastatic disease. This fact limits the benefit a patient might get from the Whipple surgery. Recent evidence shows that when even advanced disease is treated aggressively in an integrated approach, incorporating Nanoknife surgery with chemotherapy, long-term survivorship can be achieved, especially compared to chemotherapy alone. Dr. Donoway has been a pioneer in the use of Pancreatic NanoKnife, especially for complex advanced cases. During the past decade, he remains the only surgical oncologist performing the procedure in South Florida. Patients from around the globe have traveled to benefit from this ground-breaking treatment, which is
FDA approved. Dr. Donoway also treats other advanced cancers, such as liver, breast, and sarcomas, using Nanoknife surgery. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway feels that “we are long overdue to revise our approach to treating pancreatic cancer. The treatment has remained largely unchanged for over 80 years and has just broken the 9-10% five-year survivorship barrier. Only thru thinking outside the box will we accomplish the positive. Among his longest survivors are now patients over eight years without evidence of cancer recurrence. This coming session, I am requesting money from the Florida Legislature to improve the drainage systems in Weston and Southwest Ranches. I have filed an appropriation to repair the stormwater pump station in Weston which will keep roads open to emergency service vehicles before and after a storm. I am also working with the Town of Southwest Ranches on several projects. One project will install a drainage system into Ivanhoe Canal so that surrounding communities are hardened for storms. I am also proposing legislation to address the Central and Southern Florida (C&SF) Project. The C&SF Project consists of nearly 2,600 miles of canals, numerous levees, and water control structures which provide flood protection for the South Florida region. It was designed over 70 years ago to serve an anticipated 2 million residents. Today, the C&SF Project now protects more than 11 million Floridians and over $359 billion of Florida’s economy in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties alone. Recently, the C&SF Project has been challenged by sea level rise and more intense rainfall; parts of the system require immediate upgrades to protect our region. In 2009, the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) determined that 18 flood control structures of the C&SF Project were within six inches of design failure. 62 / 2022 Best of Pembroke Pines / OurCityMedia.com
South Florida has always been my home and we must take decisive action to protect our community for future generations. The successful operation of our flood control system is critical to daily life in South Florida. Florida needs to adapt to rising sea levels and enhance flood protection to preserve the region for our growing population and to maintain one-third of Florida’s economy. I especially encourage everyone to participate in the billing system’s new Citizen Self-Service (CSS) portal where customers can sign up for easy and convenient access to their utility account information 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. This portal will give customers the ability to review their monthly consumption, billing, financial history, pay utility bill(s) online, sign up for auto-pay, print bills, and much more. Please be sure to visit the city’s YouTube channel at Pembroke Pines Media for several tutorial videos should you have any questions. I’m happy to announce that Pembroke Pines has once again, for the 29th consecutive year, been named 2021 Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. This is a national recognition for the city’s commitment to effective urban forest management. Our Kindness Initiate event is now back. On February 5, 2022, please join the City of Pembroke Pines and Broward County School at the Charles F. Dodge City Center, located at 601 City Center Way, for an afternoon of sharing kindness.
