Resolutions For The New Year

Christy & Terry Jaillet

202 4

T

he tradition of making New Year’s resolutions dates back thousands of years and has its origins in various cultures and civilizations. While the specific customs and resolutions may have evolved over time, the concept of setting goals and making commitments for self-improvement at the start of a new year has remained a common practice in many parts of the world. The practice of making New Year’s resolutions can be traced back to ancient Babylon, around 4,000 years ago. The Babylonians celebrated the New Year during the spring equinox and made promises to their gods to repay debts and return borrowed items. This was seen as a way to secure favor for the upcoming year. In the early days of the United States, religious and moral resolutions continued to be popular. The practice later evolved to include promises related to self-improvement, such as losing weight or saving money. Today, New Year’s resolutions encompass a wide range of goals and commitments, from personal fitness and health to career aspirations and self-improvement. Whether your resolution for this year is related to fitness, financial success, or learning a new hobby, we wish you the very best in pursuing yours!

C

oral Springs residents turned out for the city’s Light Up the Lawn event on December 9th. Members of the City Commission presided over the event where holiday displays were lit for the season and hundreds of smiling faces enjoyed the good cheer. Unfortunately, Mother Nature did not cooperate with this year’s planned Holiday Parade. The event was canceled because of a rainstorm on December 13-15. That did not deter residents from celebrating the season in style, however!

Some of the research breakthroughs directly attributable to MVP include: Height and Health Risks An MVP study involving 280,000 veterans revealed 127 medical conditions with risk factors linked to height. Tall individuals appear to have a reduced risk of cardiovascular problems but an increased risk for conditions like peripheral neuropathy and circulatory disorders. Yogurt and Heart Health Research on nearly 200,000 veterans in 2021 indicated that higher yogurt consumption correlates with increased levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good cholesterol," potentially reducing heart disease risk and increasing longevity. Racial Disparities in COVID-19 Outcomes: MVP researchers discovered a link between two mutations of the APOL1 gene and increased risk of acute kidney failure in Black patients with COVID-19. This finding, based on data from over 150,000 Black veterans, is leading to new drug research targeting the APOL1 gene. Genetic Links Between PTSD, TBI, and Dementia A study found a genetic connection between PTSD, traumatic brain injury (TBI), and an increased risk of dementia and Alzheimer's disease. This research highlights the importance of genetic factors in these conditions and may improve screening and treatment.

“At this special Holiday Season, I want to share with you how thankful and grateful I am to so many of you as guests and friends over 17 years at Dyan’s Country Kitchen Bagels and Deli. My family, my work family and so many of you have meant so much to me. school and business events.

From John Brodie of Our City Media –

Last week I went into Dyan’s to say hello to Brian. He will happily be continuing Dyan’s legacy of award-winning all-day breakfasts and delicious lunches (7-days a week). Brian also wants to invite everyone in to have Dinner at Dyan’s Country Kitchen (Thurs-Sat till 8 pm). They have what is often referred to as a “scratch” kitchen and Dyan’s is turning out some of the best dinners in town with prices that make it a most satisfying meal. Dyan’s will also continue to prepare their great food to cater your family,

For Brian, I think the family and local community appeal of Dyan’s, along with the popularity, made this the right decision for him. I enjoyed talking to Brian. He is focused on keeping everything running smoothly while he gets to know everybody. Brian happily has Dyan as a consultant for a while as he gets familiar with the business aspects of running Dyan’s Country Kitchen. So, if you have been a fan of Dyan’s as I have, stop by for a great meal, enjoy the always friendly atmosphere and say hi to Brian. From all of us at Our City Media, we wish Brian, his staff and all of you a very happy, healthy and deliciously good New Year!

new year brings new possibilities and opportunities for the City of Coral Springs to progress toward a bright and promising future. As we continue to look ahead, residents and business owners are invited to join city leadership at the Vision 2035 Summit on Saturday, January 27 at 9 a.m. at the Coral Springs Museum of Art (2855 Coral Springs Drive.) The results of the city’s yearlong visioning process will be shared and discussed during the event. Participants may register at CoralSprings.gov/Vision2035. Popular city events are back for another year, including Game Night at the Den, where residents can try free ice skating at the Panthers Ice Den (3299 Sportsplex Drive.) The event takes place on Friday, January 4 from 6 to 8 p.m. Registration is required and available at CoralSprings.gov/GameNight. Additional events taking place this month include Family Fun Night on Wednesday, January 10, and the return of the popular toddler program, Juice Box Jam, on Thursday, January 18. Information about all city events can be found at CoralSprings.gov/Events. As a city, we strive to honor those who enrich our community most through meaningful awards and recognition. The Martin Luther King, Jr. Committee is now accepting nominations for the 2024 MLK Monument Award. The award is given annually to an individual or organization in Coral Springs who embodies the ideals of Dr. King. Applications can be submitted at CoralSprings.gov/MLKMonument. The deadline to submit applications is January 19, 2024. Dedicated to honoring local businesses that contribute to the financial vitality of the city, the City of Coral Springs Economic Development Office is now accepting nominations for the 2024 Business Excellence Awards. The awards are given annually to businesses located in Coral Springs that exemplify good business practices in one of seven categories. Applications will be accepted through Thursday, February 29 at CoralSprings.gov/BEA. As we move into 2024, we are thankful for the residents, community members, and sponsors who attended and supported our 60th Anniversary events throughout 2023. To commemorate our 60th year, a permanent public art sculpture has been installed near the Museum of Coral Springs History (10250 NW 29th Street) which chronicles our historic milestones and important moments as a city. The sculpture is free and open to the public. This month’s Commission Meeting will take place on Wednesday, January 18 at 6:30 p.m. As always, the public is invited to attend Commission meetings. The meetings are aired on CityTV, Blue Stream Channels 25, 25.7, 725 and on AT&T U-Verse channel 99. Meetings are also live streamed on CityTV.

■ MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

PARKLAND UPDATE

F

Pet of the Month

By Mayor Rich Walker

ood insecurity is an epidemic throughout the country and Broward County is no different. According to the Florida Department of Health 2020 reports, more than 10 percent of the population in Broward County is food insecure, which almost mirrors that of the state of Florida. While these numbers have improved over the past several years, I believe it is our responsibility to continue to work together to help families in need to have access to resources and healthy food sources that will allow our communities to thrive. Food insecurity is not just about food. It is a social and economic factor related to overall health. According to the Florida Department of Health, low-income families are affected by multiple, overlapping issues that cause a chain reaction of complications for children and families. Other issues, such as a lack of affordable housing, social isolation, chronic or acute health problems, high medical costs, and low wages, exacerbate the ability to access and consume healthy meals. When people experience food insecurity, they often consume a nutrient-poor diet, which may contribute to the development of obesity, heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases, the report states. In addition to that, food insecurity can stem from lack of resources. Some families are in a situation where they need to rebuild after losing much or all of their belongings in situations, due to unforeseen circumstances or natural disasters. The City of Parkland Community Advisory Board will hold a household goods drive for Harvest Drive Florida at the February 4, 2024, Farmer’s Market and from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the City of Parkland Equestrian Center, 8350 Ranch Road. Our Community Advisory Board will be on hand to collect household items, linens, clothing, and shoes to help stock the Harvest Drive boutique, which creates a space for families in need to shop for the basics. As a sponsor of Harvest Drive Florida, The City of Parkland believes in the power of community. Mark your calendars to come out to the February 4 Farmers’ Market to pick up your fresh produce, enjoy the community, and bring donations to ensure all children and families have what they need to succeed. If you would like to share your thoughts or if you have questions or comments you would like to share, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@ cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information. 32 / Our City Coral Springs / January 2024 / OurCityMedia.com
