How a Trip to Nazi Germany Gave Us a King

I

n August 1934, a 39-year-old Southern Baptist preacher named Michael traveled to Berlin, Germany, for the Fifth World Baptist Alliance Meeting. The meeting is a global gathering of Baptists held every five years. It is organized by the Baptist World Alliance (BWA), a worldwide fellowship of Baptist churches and organizations. The 1934 event was particularly notable because it was held in Berlin shortly after the Nazi Party rose to power. While at the meeting, Michael saw how Nazi ideology combined elements of nationalism, racism, anti-Semitism, and anti-communism impacted Germans. He saw parallels to the segregation policies in his home state of Georgia. He realized that the oppression of minority groups was a global problem. Michael also learned about the teachings of Martin Luther, the 16th-century leader of the Protestant Reformation. Luther’s teachings emphasized salvation by faith alone, the authority of the Bible over Church traditions, and the priesthood of all believers. In 1517, Luther famously nailed his “95 Theses” to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg. The theses called out corrupt practices of the Catholic Church at the time and led to the formation of new Christian denominations collectively known as Protestantism. Luther’s teachings left such an indelible mark on Michael that shortly after he returned home to the United States, he chose to change his name to Martin. Interestingly, he also changed the name of his five-year-old son to Martin. That five-year-old son, Martin Luther King Jr., would grow up to have as significant an impact on the world as his namesake. What a difference a name makes!

February 2024 Calendar (CONTINUED)

FEBRUARY 19

FEBRUARY 14 Valentine’s Day

President’s Day

Happy Valentine’s Day! Celebrate with someone you love! The holiday is named after Saint Valentine, a Christian saint who is believed to have been martyred for secretly marrying couples in ancient Rome during a time when marriage was forbidden. Valentine's Day is now celebrated in many countries around the world, although the way it is celebrated can vary significantly from place to place.

Established in 1885, this holiday was initially set to honor George Washington, the first President of the United States. Over time, its scope expanded to include a tribute to President Abraham Lincoln and eventually evolved to celebrate the contributions of all U.S. Presidents. This federal holiday serves as a fitting occasion to contemplate the importance of civic service.

Parkland Family Fun Fest Carnival

T

WAS ENJOYED BY ALL

he Carnival was back at Pine Trails Park in full stride! Kids of all ages didn’t let drizzly conditions stop them from enjoying the annual event. Live music entertained the crowds as dads competed at carnival games and teens tried to prove they could handle the spinning rides. The annual event is sponsored by the City of Parkland for three days and nights. In addition to the rides, games, and music, there was also an incredible variety of food options. We loved the pizza and ice cream!

Martin Karadzhov Selected as Signature Artist

T

FOR CORAL SPRINGS FESTIVAL OF THE ARTS 2024

he Coral Springs Festival of the Arts is proud to announce Martin Karadzhov as the 2024 Signature Artist. The winning entry is an oil on canvas painting entitled “Rock n′ Roll” which depicts an electric guitarist exploding from a dynamic background of abstract paint splashes. The feeling of music is expressed in the intensity of the colors and the texture of the paint. When asked about the meaning of the butterflies within the piece, Karadzhov stated, “The two colorful butterflies are symbols of the beauty and grace of the music he (the musician) created. They are flying and fluttering around him like the

sound of guitar strings under his fingers and the hurricane of his romantic musical emotions.” Joe Morera, CSFOA President said of the winning piece, “Rock n′ Roll” represents many facets of our Festival. From the music, to the art, to the overall fun of the whole weekend, Karadzhov’s entry captured what our Festival is all about.” Entries were submitted from artists across Broward and Palm Beach counties and chosen by a blind committee. Pieces are judged on how they represent the Coral Springs Festival of the Arts and artistic lifestyles with original voice, unique style, mastery of medium, technique and professionalism. Karadzhov’s painting will be featured in the Festival’s advertisements, as well as merchandise and posters sold at the festival. He also earned a $500 stipend and a complimentary booth at the Festival where he will display and sell his artwork. Every year, the Annual Signature Artist Competition attracts dozens of submissions from two-dimensional artists and occasionally from sculptors as well.

The 18th Annual Festival of the Arts at The Walk of Coral Springs will be held on March 16th and 17th, 2024. The Festival will feature a professional juried arts and crafts show with over 200 fine artisans and crafters and in addition, will host Gardenfest. Throughout the weekend, patrons will enjoy a wide variety of live music, dance exhibitions, theater and literary performances and a children’s area.

■ FROM THE STATEHOUSE

DISTRICT 96 UPDATE By State Representative Dan Daley

A

s the Florida Legislature returns to Tallahassee for the commencement of the 2024 Legislative Session, I want to share an update on some of the issues we will address. Property insurance, cost of living, and housing affordability remain priorities and we’ll do all we can to tackle these concerns at every opportunity. I also wanted to take this time to highlight three of our bills for this Session: HB 903: “Educator Certifications and Training” seeks to enhance the preparedness of educators in the face of potential mass casualty incidents. In the wake of tragedies like the one at my alma mater, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, this bill mandates comprehensive emergency preparedness training for our teachers to make sure their classrooms are prepared in a way to keep our children safe. HB 915: “Outpatient Mental Health” addresses critical gaps within Florida's misdemeanor-level mental health system. By granting courts the authority to order outpatient treatment for misdemeanor offenses, this bill aims to offer effective intervention before the offender escalates from misdemeanors to felonies. This will alleviate a significant strain on the judicial system and highlights a necessary shift toward a more proactive approach to mental health issues. HB 999: “Post-trial Counseling Services for Jurors” introduces a support system for jurors, acknowledging the potential emotional strain and trauma that can result from their service. This bill will provide access to free, optional counseling sessions for jurors after trials involving evidence of a troubling nature. The goal is to recognize and address the often-overlooked mental health needs of jurors, who are a vital component of our justice system. These bills serve as priorities for our office this Session, emphasizing safety, education, and mental health as important pillars in shaping a better Florida. They reflect a commitment to providing solutions addressing real concerns that affect everyday Floridians. Throughout the upcoming Session, I will provide ongoing updates on the progress of these bills and more. They represent not just legislative proposals but tangible steps toward a more responsive and supportive system. I am always available to speak with constituents, and you can find out more about my bills on the House of Representatives website at myfloridahouse.gov. You can contact me on my cell phone at (954)778-3304 or via email at dan.daley@myfloridahouse.gov. We also extend our full support to the Parkland17 Memorial Foundation that exists to honor the 17 lives that were lost and to raise critical funds for a meaningful memorial that will be located within the land between Parkland and Coral Springs. Those interested in supporting the foundation may contribute at Parkland17.org. Celebrating our accomplishments and coming together as a community is why each year, we host a Community Concert Celebration! On February 10, enjoy the best hits from Chicago, Earth Wind & Fire and more featuring former members of Chicago. Attendees may also enjoy food trucks, adult beverages, and lawn games. The concert is free on the Great Lawn of City Hall. More information can be found at CoralSprings.gov/Events. Beads, bling, bites, and beverages will create an immersive experience as a little bit of New Orleans comes to Coral Springs for the city’s first-ever Mardi Party on Saturday, February 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts Courtyard (2855 Coral Springs Drive.) Tickets are on sale now for this first-of-its-kind event designed for adults ages 21 and above. ■ MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

PARKLAND UPDATE

A

Pet of the Month

By Mayor Rich Walker

s we settle into the new year, take a moment to think about the power of friendship. We all know how effective positive words or a statement of support can be, when we share a dream, vision, or just a hint of an idea with a good friend or mentor. Even a nonverbal show of support – leaning in to listen, putting down the cell phone when having a conversation, or asking questions of someone who is sharing thoughts and ideas with you – means the world to someone. These small gestures and moments in time make a big difference. They are the seeds we plant when we set out to build community. Our sense of community in the City of Parkland is integral to our well-being and our ability to continue to thrive. With the smallest show of support to those around us, we can lift one another up and support our loved ones and our neighbors to help each other achieve our goals in 2024. February marks the six-year anniversary of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School tragedy. Through the vast and varied efforts of organizations and foundations that have been created to memorialize the 17 victims of this tragedy, positive changes have been made on the federal, state, and local levels regarding laws and policies that will ensure safety for us all—in the hopes that a similar horrific event is not repeated. As we commemorate the lives lost this month, let us use the strength and vision of our community as an example of how we can all support one another. On Wednesday, February 14, 2024, at the Amphitheatre at Pine Trails Park, we will hold the six-year Commemoration event to honor and remember the 17 victims. Every year this event provides a humbling reminder of those who were taken and how our community comes together to honor them and comfort one another.

We are stronger together. If you would like to share your thoughts or if you have questions or comments you would like to share, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information.

“Bella” Say hello to Bella, our delightful Beagle-Labrador mix who's not only bilingual in Spanish and English but also irresistibly sweet at 10 years old. Her favorite game is hide and seek, and she's quite the expert at it. Bella loves spending time on the patio, watching her favorite shows – squirrels and ducks! While she might gently beg for a treat at the table, resting her head on your lap, her endearing face is sure to capture your heart.

■ LEGALLY SPEAKING

ESTATE PLANNING LESSONS

WE LEARNED FROM US PRESIDENTS

F

2023

By Andrea L. Jakob, Esq.

ebruary 19, 2024, is President’s Day. This is a great time to learn some lessons from our forefathers’ estate planning experiences.

George Washington: Lessons for a Blended Family

Washington, a highly respected figure, took notable care in organizing his affairs and planning for the future. At age twenty-six, Washington married Martha, a widow who had two children of her own. After his stepson John died, Martha and George raised his two youngest children as their own. Washington's blended family prompted him to draft a will that meticulously provided for each family member, ensuring their well-being after his passing. This highlights how by spending sufficient time and effort to think about and memorialize how we want to leave our possessions; we can leave a real legacy without a stressful mess.

Thomas Jefferson: Lessons for Business Owners

Jefferson, despite his great capabilities, had significant financial difficulties. His case demonstrates the challenges faced by families with cash-poor estates. His wealth was tied up and his family didn’t have the cash to settle the debts. Many families today face similar problems. Often when a business owner has significant wealth tied up in their business but little cash in reserve to settle debts, funds aren’t readily available to surviving family members. This can cause the families left behind to feel intense pressure to sell too quickly or at a large discount to pay creditors. Life insurance can be used to provide sufficient cash to resolve this issue. With the proper amount of life insurance, and by using estate planning tools such as irrevocable life insurance trusts, an individual can prevent a “land rich, cash poor” situation like that experienced by Jefferson’s family.

Abraham Lincoln: No Will

Lincoln, a lawyer, surprisingly died without a will or any other type of estate planning in place. His murder plunged his family into a nightmare as they attempted to settle his affairs without knowing where to start. This is called an “intestate estate” and the funds are divided according to state law, not necessarily what he would have wanted, during a prolonged court procedure called “probate” A key lesson is that no one knows when they will pass away. Even Abraham Lincoln was caught unprepared. Had Lincoln put some basic planning in place prior to his death, it could have eased his family’s burden.
