RELAY FOR LIFE: CELEBRATING SURVIVORS AND FUNDING THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER
The American Cancer Society (ACS) Relay For Life of Parkland, Coral Springs, Margate and Coconut Creek invites the communities to join the movement to honor and remember loved ones and fight back for lifesaving change on Saturday, April 6, 2024 at the Coral Springs Sportsplex.
This year, more than 1.9 million people will be diagnosed with cancer, according to the American Cancer Society. Cancer continues to be the second most common cause of death among Americans, after heart disease.
Relay For Life is a community of survivors, caregivers, local citizens, volunteers and participants who believe that the future can be free from cancer and own the power to make that change. It continues to be the largest peer-to-peer fundraising event, with 2.5 million participants globally uniting to save lives from cancer.
“Relay For Life is more than just a walk. It is a volunteer-led movement that unites communities to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer and raise funds to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families,” said Event Lead and cancer survivor Chris Fletcher.
The American Cancer Society’s mission is to improve the lives of people with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and patient support, to ensure everyone has an opportunity to prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer.
“Since Covid, our mission has become harder,” explains Chris, who fought Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma in 2019. “But we'll rise to the challenge. During our Relay event on April 6th at the Coral Springs Sportsplex, we're planning on honoring the Survivors, Thrivers still in their fight, and the Caregivers who provide so much help, love, and hope for those fighting.”
“Our theme this year is ‘Relay Through the Decades’” said Entertainment Lead Megan Mila. “More than 40 teams and more than 500 participants will join together to raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer. Our goal is to host over 100 cancer survivors and their caregivers at the event. The opening ceremony will include a special Survivors Lap. Survivors, Thrivers and their Caregivers will also enjoy a complimentary dinner. After sunset, we light Luminaria bags to remember those we have lost, to celebrate cancer survivors, and to show those affected by cancer that they are not alone.”

Dollars raised each year by Relay participants across the country help support the American Cancer Society’s mission in countless ways, including funding and conducting breakthrough research, providing education and advocating for the needs of cancer patients and their families, and providing essential services throughout their cancer journey.
“It’s never been easier to raise money for Relay For Life and help fund the future. Every dollar raised fuels the American Cancer Society’s lifesaving mission. The fight against cancer needs you now more than ever,” said Survivor Program Chair Amanda Fletcher.

Meet a Wellpath Healthcare Hero from Broward County
Dr. Andrew Gross, Psy.D. Broward County Jails Systemwide Behavioral Health DirectorHow long have you been at Wellpath?
I have been with Wellpath since 2018. Previously I was with the company from 2006-2011 as the Mental Health Director at the Shelby County Jail in Memphis. How did you get into correctional medicine?
I was lucky enough to get into corrections when I moved to Memphis from South Florida in 2006. The opportunity interested me as my background at that point was in acute care psych hospitals and forensic psychology. I saw
correctional mental health as the perfect blend of both of those backgrounds.
What is your why?
What gets you up every day to do this important work?
“We have the privilege of being able to help anyone in our care who wants the help and is willing to work with us. We change lives for the better.”
I have worked in a number of settings and have learned I am happiest when my work is mission-driven. We provide services to people who often don’t receive adequate help when in the community. We have the privilege of being able to help anyone in our care who wants the help and is willing to work with us. We change lives for the better.
What is most rewarding about this work?
It is rewarding to see many people who come into our care with mental health challenges accept our care and leave the jail much healthier and more stable. We try to give them hope. That’s why our mantra is “To Hope and Healing.”
What kind of mental healthcare heroes do the best in this unique setting?
People who are not judgmental, work well in a team, want to help the underprivileged and underserved, and understand that anybody can end up in our setting. We must treat our patients like we would want to be treated if we ended up here.

April UPDATE
By State Rep. Christine HunschofskyIt is great to be back in the district after our busy Legislative Session. Throughout the upcoming months, I will be giving legislative updates regarding bills that were signed by the Governor and appropriations in the budget that survived the veto, as well as our successes and missed opportunities that we need to address.
During this year’s legislative session, I was proud to work on bills dealing with protecting consumer information, school safety, expanding the My Safe Florida Homes program to condominium associations, flood disclosures on real estate, and expanding workforce opportunities. There was a big healthcare package to improve our healthcare workforce including physicians and audiologists.
As many of you had expressed your concerns regarding property insurance reforms it disappoints me to report that as a body the Legislature did not focus enough on this major issue. While we approved a tax package to give homeowners a temporary break on property insurance tax which is 1.75% of the property insurance premium, we did not hear bills that would systemically address our property insurance crisis. One of these was a bi-partisan bill HB 1213 by Representatives Hillary Cassel (D) and Spencer Roach (R) that would allow Citizens to offer wind-only coverage so that the private insurers would only offer the typical property insurance that they do in other states. We had a workshop on the bill, but leadership unfortunately never added it to the agenda.
Earth Day is Saturday, April 22nd and Arbor Day is April 26th. The theme this year for Earth Day is Planet vs. Plastics to advocate for awareness of the health risks of plastics. Please look forward to the multiple events cities within our district are hosting to celebrate Earth Day and Arbor Day.
I personally want to wish a Happy Passover – Chag Sameach, and Ramadan Mubarak to all who celebrate. We are blessed to live in an area with diverse religions, and this month is a special one with several holy days.
Thank you to all who have reached out to me with concerns, comments, questions, and support. I appreciate the honor of representing you. To reach us for assistance with state agencies or to share your thoughts and concerns, please call 954-956-5600. To receive our email updates, for please email HD095@myfloridahouse.gov with "subscribe" in the subject line. Also, follow me on Facebook at @RepChristineHunschofsky and Twitter @RepHunschofsky for regular updates. Looking forward to staying in touch!
Heading into spring, April is blossoming with city events and recognitions of national causes that aim to promote community togetherness, unity, and pride.
April is Autism Awareness Month. Recognizing the unique needs of this community, a Touch-A-Truck event will be held on Saturday, April 20 at 11 a.m. at Mullins Park (10150 NW 29th Street.) Persons with special needs or sensory issues can familiarize themselves with the various vehicles and equipment in our emergency response fleet. At the event, parents and caregivers of persons with cognitive deficits can register for the city’s special needs database. In April we also celebrate Earth Month. In Coral Springs, we are committed to ensuring a more sustainable future. All year long, not just in April, we encourage residents to Recycle Right and participate in our new Household Composting program. By participating in these sustainable programs, residents can help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Household composting can be dropped off on Saturdays at the Waste Transfer Station from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Join us for Earthfest on Saturday, April 27 at the Sawgrass Nature Center (3000 Sportsplex Drive) from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event features free nature exhibits, plant giveaways, and more.
We are fortunate to live in a community where the voices of our teenagers are heard through the Teen Political Forum (TPF). This annual event for high school-aged students is led by student government leaders in our city high schools and allows teens to ask questions to state, county, and local elected leaders. TPF is scheduled for Thursday, April 4 at 6:30 p.m. at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts. High schools who have the highest event attendance can win up to $1,000 with prizes sponsored by Baptist Health.
Our city offers programming for residents of all ages throughout the year. The Mayor’s Chess Challenge takes place on Saturday, April 27 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Mullins Hall (10150 NW 29th Street.) Other events taking place this month include Open Play Chess on Wednesday, April 3, Juice Box Jam on Thursday, April 18, and free tours of the Museum of Coral Springs History on April 27. PARKLAND UPDATE
By Vice Mayor Jordan IsrowThe month of April is a time to celebrate the most cherished aspects of the great City of Parkland – a place where natural beauty, diversity and inclusivity converge to create a vibrant community unlike any other.
Starting with Earth Day, this month serves as a reminder of the significance that our environment has had on the fabric of our City’s DNA. From our roots as a rural agricultural community, Parkland has long recognized the importance of protecting and conserving our natural resources. Indeed, our City’s seal reads “Environmentally Proud” as a reflection of our deep-seated values and unwavering dedication to environmental stewardship.
Whether it's strolling along the trails through the Doris Davis Forman Wildlife Preserve, admiring the majestic beauty of the Everglades, or simply enjoying our last Farmers’ Markets of the season (April 7 & 21), take a moment to appreciate our City’s unparalleled opportunities to explore the wonder of the great outdoors and do what you can to affirm your commitment to environmental responsibility.
With April being Autism Awareness Month, it’s also the perfect time to reflect upon our community’s other greatest natural resource that truly sets Parkland apart – its people. As Vice Mayor, I’m proud to say that Parkland was the first city in Broward County to be recognized as autism-friendly by the University of Miami-Nova Southeastern Center for Autism & Related Disabilities. Our City staff completed robust training on how to foster an environment that allows individuals with autism and their families to reach their full potential.
This is one of the things I love most about Parkland. We embrace inclusivity as a core value that enriches our community and creates an environment where everyone feels valued, respected and empowered to thrive. The diverse tapestry of voices and perspectives is what makes our City so uniquely special.
Speaking of making our City special, this month our City Commission will be conducting our annual Strategic Planning Session, where we set the project, program and work priorities for the upcoming year and beyond. This exercise is vital in preserving Parkland’s character and charm that makes it one of the greatest places to live in the country, while also preparing our City for the future. We value your input in this process so please do not hesitate to reach out.
Finally, I’d like to wish a Happy Passover to all who celebrate. Enjoy your time with your loved ones and remember that together we can sow seeds of kindness, cultivate compassion, and grow a brighter, greener future for generations to come.
If you have any questions, comments or ideas, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at jisrow@ cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (561) 376-1014.
DISTRICT 96 UPDATE
By State Representative Dan DaleyThe 2024 Legislative Session officially ended on March 8th with the Sine Die Ceremony, the traditional conclusion of all business in both the Florida Senate and Florida House Chambers. I am proud to announce the passing of six bills, eleven co-sponsored bills, and almost $3 million in appropriations secured for state and local projects. Here are some highlights:
Legislation Highlights:
CS/HB 793 - Coral Springs Improvement District, Broward County
This is a local bill that will provide stricter controls over the contract and bidding process for CSID. This bill will close loopholes that could be used for potential abuse.
CS/HB 983 - Public Records/Clerks of the Circuit Court, Deputy Clerks, and Clerk Personnel
This bill will protect these public servants and their families from public records requirements in order to protect them from harassment.
CS/CS/HB 161 - Payments for Health Care Providers and Surgical Procedures under Workers’ Compensation
This bill is the first substantive workers compensation bill in over 20 years and includes updated pay scales for service providers, which will increase access to quality care and additional providers.
HB 765 - Leave of Absence to Officials and Employees
This bill will allow certain public officials and employees to continue receiving full pay during leave for federal military service that lasts a certain period of time.
CS/CS/HB 7021 - Mental Health and Substance Abuse
This legislation will provide county court judges with the ability to order mental healthcare to defendants in need rather than just dismissing a case. This bill was passed as part of a larger mental health reform package.
HM 1145 - Florida National Guard
This memorial asks Congress to push the National Guard Bureau to increase the number of National Guard troops allowed for Florida. The current number is inadequate to meet the needs of a state with Florida’s population density and propensity for natural disasters.
Appropriations Highlights:
Tamarac Park Safety and Health - $271,577.00
City of Coral Springs - Everglades Greenway Loop - $800,000.00
Sunrise Fire Rescue Regional Highway Response Equipment - $400,000.00
Insurance: Once again, the Legislature did not address the insurance crisis in any substantive way. My office continues to receive calls from Floridians who are facing extreme financial difficulties due to exorbitant insurance rates, yet nothing was done to bring down these costs. This “Kitchen Table Issue” affects every Floridian; even renters will see the cost of rent increase as landlords try to recoup these additional costs. I remain committed to advocating for comprehensive reforms to our property insurance system and working toward solutions that directly impact the financial well-being of each and every Floridian.
Thank you to my incredible team and colleagues for the help and support. We have more work to do, and I look forward to doing it.
Representative Dan Daley is a Member of the Florida House of Representatives serving District 96, which includes portions of Coral Springs, Sunrise, Tamarac, and our Florida Everglades.
