Remember, True Heroes Walk Among Us!

O

n the morning of October 8th, the Islamist group Hamas carried out one of the worst terrorist attacks in recent history. The atrocities that took place are now well known and led to an unprecedented response from the Israeli military. Finding a silver lining to such a horrible course of events is almost impossible. Like many in America, we closely followed the early days of the war and discovered the story of one selfless grandfather’s efforts to rescue his son, daughter-in-law, and two granddaughters. Retired Israeli General Noam Tibon received a terrible phone call from his son, journalist Amir Tibon. Amir needed help. Hamas fighters had overrun his community, searching for people to take hostage or worse. Amir and his family live in Kibbutz Nahal Oz on the border of Gaza. “In every house in our community and other communities along the border with Gaza, there is a room that is built of very strong concrete that can withstand a direct hit from a mortar or a rocket,” said Amir in an interview with The Atlantic, “I’m in the room with my wife, and I hear the gunfire directly outside my window, as well as shouting.” They hid in the dark as the noise of war surrounded them. “Trust me, I will come,” Noam reassured his son, “Nobody, nobody, can stop me.” Noam then set out on perhaps the most crucial mission of his life: to save his family. He and his wife raced from Tel Aviv to Nahal Oz but had to stop to help survivors of the Nova music festival massacre. After delivering as many people as possible to a safe location away from the border, Tibon again drove toward the kibbutz where his family was hiding. Along the way, they encountered another group that needed help. Soldiers were under fire from Hamas fighters. Together with the soldiers, Noam ended the threat. Two of the soldiers, however, were wounded and needed care. Noam drove them back to where he had left his wife so the soldiers could be cared for. He then enlisted the help of another retired general, Israel Ziv. The two sixty-plus-year-old men set off again. They arrived at Nahal Oz about the same time as an Israeli paratrooper unit. They began the dangerous process of clearing the town of enemy fighters. Finally, ten hours after the ordeal started, Noam’s three-year-old granddaughter Galia heard her grandfather’s voice. “Saba higea,” she called out. “Grandfather is here.” Their family was saved. In our world’s darkest hours, remember: true heroes walk among us! (This story is based, in part, on an interview between Yair Rosenberg and Amir Tibon in The Atlantic.)

Thanksgiving Day

Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you gather with family and loved ones to celebrate each other and give thanks for all that we have. In the words of John F. Kennedy, “Over three centuries ago, our forefathers in Virginia and in Massachusetts, far from home in a lonely wilderness, set aside a time of thanksgiving. On the appointed day, they gave reverent thanks for their safety, for the health of their children, for the fertility of their fields, for the love which bound them together, and for the faith which united them with their God.”

City of Parkland Farmers Market is BACK

A

rea residents can look forward to another season of fresh produce and baked goods at the Parkland Farmers’ Markets. The City of Parkland Farmers Market will return on Sunday, November 5th from 9:00 am till 1:00 pm at the Parkland Equestrian Center. The dogfriendly outdoor market is a popular hit among residents and will be open every other Sunday through April. The market has once again expanded its produce offerings and will feature over 60 vendors selling fresh baked goods, organic breads, seafood, cheeses, sauces, spreads, sweet treats, and much more. The Parkland Farmers’ Market began in 2006. In addition to the regular Farmers Market, there will be craft fairs on December 4, December 18, and February 19. Visitors will be able to purchase items such as fresh and organic vegetables, fruits, herbs, beautiful flowers, breads, pastries, and other baked goods. They also feature a variety of gourmet foods such as jam, honey, dips, sauces, fresh

pasta, cheese, and pickles. The market is dog friendly so don’t forget to visit the pet vendors! During the November and December Farmer’s Markets, they will feature vendors selling holiday related items. “The mission of the Parkland Farmers’ Market is to contribute to making our City a healthy community. To do this, we provide a community gathering that offers a wide assortment of conventional and organic fruits as well as an abundance of gourmet food items. The market offers spices, coffees, teas, sauces, and dog treats. Much of which is made and can be enjoyed on site. We also feature specialty market days such as craft fairs, health and wellness fairs, and pet day,” said Todd DeAngelis, Chief Communications Officer for the City of Parkland. This continued growth reflects the desire for the community to engage in local food producers to purchase fresh

produce and food products directly from our local vendors. It also allows an opportunity to bring our community together, interact, meet neighbors, and have fun in the great outdoors of South Florida,” added DeAngelis.

Expanded Community Garden Welcomes Enthusiasts & Educators By Jon Duka

A

ttention budding gardeners! Opportunities to showcase your horticultural skills just blossomed in Coral Springs. Thanks to a collaborative expansion effort with the Rotary Club, the Coral Springs Community Garden at 2915 Sportsplex Drive is now home to over 100 garden beds, nearly doubling from its previous 54. If you're keen to plant your own piece of paradise, garden beds are now available for lease. They're priced at $60 annually

for current members, and $120 for newcomers. By reserving a bed, you'll have a full year to cultivate your chosen flora. Secure your garden spot through the city’s website, whether you're an individual, a family, or a group. This expansion is not just about quantity, but quality too. The garden now boasts an educational and children’s section. These areas aim to be hubs for classes, workshops, and excursions, all designed to foster knowledge about Floridian gardening and sustainable living. Dr. Andrea Lemaitre, Coral Springs Sustainability Manager, lauded the expansion, noting, “The Community Garden is our city’s hidden treasure. It thrives thanks to our committed residents and volunteers. The new design not only invites more garden enthusiasts but also emphasizes the importance of understanding our local

environment, fostering green urban spaces, and promoting wholesome lifestyles. Together, we're sowing the seeds for a sustainable Coral Springs." In memory of Kevin Connor, Jr., a brand new Community Garden Pavilion has been unveiled. Spearheading the pavilion’s construction were notable figures like Coral Springs Rotary Club President Stef Verleysen, ex-Mayor Roy Gold, Susan Connor of P&H Interiors, and the Levitetz Family Foundation. This pavilion promises to offer residents a cool haven for picnics and get-togethers. President Stef Verleysen of the Coral Springs Rotary Club shared her enthusiasm: “To witness the garden’s transformation, with the added pavilion and educational features, is heartening. It's the fruit of persistent efforts to instill a greater Scan to learn environmental consciousmore about the community ness in our community.” garden

Renaissance on the Water: The Transformation of Pier Sixty-Six

he steady state of development in Fort Lauderdale is no more evident than on the Intracoastal Waterway near the port. The Broward County Convention Center expansion project is well underway and will feature a new Omni Hotel, the Disney Cruise Terminal, and 1.2 million square feet of exhibition space. What is less understood is what is happening on the other side of the waterway at the iconic Pier 66 property. For more than 60 years, Pier Sixty-Six has been a monumental property in Fort Lauderdale. With its iconic spiretopped tower and its location at the junction of the 17th Street Causeway and Intracoastal Waterway, the property has welcomed celebrities, honeymooners and virtually all of the world’s greatest yachts. Pier Sixty-Six was originally a fuel dock and gas station that was opened in the 1950s by Phillips 66 Petroleum. The resort was later built in the 1960s by legendary developer Richard McLaughlin. He played a pivotal role in its transformation from a fuel dock to the iconic luxury hotel and marina complex that became synonymous with the upscale side of Fort Lauderdale in the mid-20th century. Under McLaughlin's vision and leadership, Pier 66 became a renowned destination and a testament to its time's innovative architectural and development practices. Over time the property became stagnant and in

disrepair, resulting, ultimately in the closing of the iconic hotel. Tavistock Purchase British Billionaire Joe Lewis’ Tavistock Development Company acquired Pier 66 Hotel & Marina, along with the neighboring Sails Marina, in late 2016. The acquisition marked a significant move by Tavistock into the South Florida real estate and hospitality scene. They announced plans to revitalize and enhance the iconic waterfront property while respecting its historic value to the Fort Lauderdale community. Tavistock has “reimagined” Pier Sixty-Six as Fort Lauderdale’s “social harbor.” A destination where those seeking relaxation and refuge, engaging events and alluring amenities, and an approachable marine and resort lifestyle all come together. The new-look property will retain the iconic Pier 66 tower, including the Top of the Marina Lounge with its rotating views of Fort Lauderdale along with the Atlantic Ocean. It will also offer luxury condominium homes. The resorts’ plans evoke images of Mediterranean-style luxury resorts from exotic locales like Ibiza. Pier 66 Resort Set to open in late 2024, Pier SixtySix Resort will up the bar in luxury living in Fort Lauderdale. Each of the property’s 325 rooms will boast a timeless design with modern luxury touches. The

resort will include a 15,000-square-foot spa, state-of-the-art Fitness Center, dynamic multi-level pool, more than 40,000 square feet of entertainment and meeting space, a marina promenade and one of the largest superyacht marinas on the eastern seaboard, Pier Sixty-Six will introduce 12 restaurants and lounges including several signature restaurants along the newly built waterfront promenade. The property will feature concepts from local and internationally acclaimed chefs. Most notably will be the restoration of the iconic rotating Pier Top lounge, admired for decades for being the only 17th-floor observation deck showing 360-degree panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean, Intracoastal Waterway, and Downtown Fort Lauderdale. The glamorous social bar and lounge will come to life with a bird's eye view in an energetic and lively setting. Residences Pier Sixty-Six will include 92 luxury two-to-four-bedroom condominiums situated in four buildings within the property. Tavistock began sales of residences in its initial tower, Azul last year and initiated sales at its Indigo Condominium Residences at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show last month. “There’s truly nothing like Pier Sixty-Six Residences on the Eastern Seaboard,” says Craig Collin, chief operating officer at Tavistock Development Company. “Offering owners a unique collection of sophisticated residences, a world-class marina, and premier resort amenities, The Residences at Pier Sixty-Six will be one of the finest marine communities in the world. Our transformation of Pier Sixty-Six will create a cornerstone gateway to Fort Lauderdale, reinvigorating Pier Sixty-Six’s status as a landmark destination.” The new Pier Sixty-Six will undoubtedly change the dynamic at the south end of Fort Lauderdale Beach. The combination of ultra-luxury residences, a high-end resort, with an integrated marina that is able to accommodate the largest yachts in the world, and what is sure to be the city’s trendiest cocktail lounge will put the place back at the top of Fort Lauderdale’s elite social scene.

T

he month of November and the anticipation of the holiday season can be exciting for many of us as we look forward to celebrating and spending time with loved ones. It's a time of gratitude and hopefully some cooler weather. However, it is also a time when many of us reflect on our own personal challenges or deal with the loss of loved ones no longer with us. This holiday season, I wish all of you much love, gratitude, and happiness. If you can, please reach out to those you know who may be struggling. Sometimes, just checking in with others can be enough to make a difference. As a reminder, we also have 211-Broward.org, which can help you connect with resources available in the community. On Tuesday, November 7, from 10 am-2 pm, at the Parkland Amphitheater (10555 Trails End, Parkland), our office is hosting a Florida Licensing on Wheels event in partnership with the Florida Department of Highway and Motor Vehicles and the City of Parkland. FLOW mobiles offer the following services: change from out-of-state driver's license to Florida license, renewals, duplicates for lost or stolen license, address/name changes, ID cards, reinstatements, Emergency Contact Information registration, and disabled parking placards. This event is open to everyone, but since limited slots are available, you need to make an appointment by reaching out to Linda Beauport in our office at 954-956-5600 or Linda.Beauport@myfloridahouse.gov. This Veteran's Day, we will come together to honor our veterans for their service to our great nation. While the men and women in our Armed Forces all came from different backgrounds and life experiences, they united around their love and devotion to our country and their willingness to serve and put themselves in harm's way to defend the freedom of others. To all who served in our Armed Forces, we thank you today and every day for your service, patriotism, and sacrifice to protect our way of life here at home. The cities of Coconut Creek (coconutcreek.net), Margate (margatefl.com), Parkland (cityofparkland.org), and Coral Springs (coral springs.gov) are all hosting Veteran's Day events the morning of Saturday, November 11, at their Veterans Parks. One of my favorite events to kick off Thanksgiving is the Pre-Thanksgiving Interfaith Unity Service that takes place this year on Tuesday, November 21, at 7:00 pm at First Church of Coral Springs at 8650 West Sample Road in Coral Springs. This beautiful interfaith service brings together many different houses of worship from our northwest Broward community as we come together and give thanks for our blessings. If you have never been, I highly recommend checking it out this year. My office team, my family, and I wish you and your family a very Happy Thanksgiving and hope you are surrounded by loved ones. Thank you for the opportunity to serve as your representative in Tallahassee. If you need assistance, please call us at 954-956-5600. ■ FROM THE STATEHOUSE

DISTRICT 96 UPDATE

Pet of the Month

By State Representative Dan Daley

T

he winter holidays are now in full swing and the cities in District 96 are hosting many celebratory events for residents to enjoy. To list a couple of examples, “Downtown in December” will be a great evening on the lawn in front of the Coral Springs City Hall on December 2nd, and Sunrise will bring live theater to the Sunrise Civic Theater on December 19th when the city presents Christmas With the Ricardos. It’s that festive time of year when the twinkle of holiday lights chases away the long, dreary winter nights. Well, the nights are dreary up north, but here in District 96, we can enjoy the festivities with picture perfect weather. For the Members of the Florida House of Representatives, this time of year also brings committee weeks, when we begin preparations for the upcoming 2024 Legislative Session. We travel to Tallahassee to meet with our assigned committees and begin the process of reviewing bills that will be heard during Session. This year, I am the Democratic Ranking Member on the Local Administration, Federal Affairs, and Special Districts Subcommittee and I’m also serving on the Commerce Committee and Rules Committee. As a member of the Appropriations Committee, I’ll sit on the subcommittees for Infrastructure and Tourism Appropriations and PreK-12 Appropriations. I’m excited to be sponsoring the Democracy in Action program again this year, which encourages middle and high school students to submit their bill ideas for one of my seven yearly bill slots. For the 2023 Session, the winning bill was proposed by students from McArthur High School. The students came up with the idea to have instructions for how to provide first aid to someone who is choking placed in public school cafeterias on informational posters. Their idea might just save some lives! This year, the entries range from requiring dogs to be secured when riding in cars to piloting a 4 day school week. That’s a no on the 4 day school week, but they gave it a good effort! Other entries included proposals for requiring life skills classes in high school, reducing ocean acidification to save our reefs, and educating students about disabilities to reduce discrimination. All of the entries were well researched, their teachers should be proud of them, and the winner will be announced at a later date. No matter which holidays you celebrate this time of year, I wish you all the joy of the season!,

Dan Daley

Dan Daley is a Democrat representing the 97th district in the Florida House of Representatives. Previously, he served as a city commissioner and vice mayor of Coral Springs, FL.

■ MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

PARKLAND UPDATE

A

By Mayor Rich Walker

s early as 5:00 a.m., runners and bikers assemble for Saturday morning and weekday runs and bike rides throughout the City of Parkland. This group of athletes and triathletes who are all at different levels, assemble at the crack of dawn to train and practice physical fitness, challenge personal records, and support each other. As runners and bikers, they often have a perspective of the road that is much different from that of motorists, and they see things others do not detect. Over the summer, I met with members of some of these athletic groups who shared their perspectives about road safety with me. I came away thinking of the bigger picture: As a community, we should be mindful of how motorists, bikers, runners, those who use wheelchairs, children walking to school, and more, can more effectively share our sidewalks and roads. For the past couple of months, the City of Parkland and Parkland-BSO have focused on this bigger picture via social media messaging on sidewalk and road safety, beginning with our involvement in the national Walk Bike & Roll event on October 4. During the event, City of Parkland City Commissioners and staff greeted elementary students arriving at school and handed out toys and safety tips for children getting to school on foot, bikes, scooters, and more. Throughout the month of October, the City also focused on heightening awareness of Florida’s bike safety laws. A number of TikTok challenges out there are causing serious safety issues for teens, especially. The BSO-Parkland District stressed the importance of bike and electric scooter safety education and the huge role parents play in the way their teenagers adhere to the laws. This month, the City’s social media will highlight the importance of sharing the road—something that will benefit all groups, whether younger children, teens, adult running and biking groups, or motorists. I think it is important to remember that the bikers who get up at the crack of dawn and ride in the bike lanes are our neighbors or family members, and the teens and younger kids who ride scooters and bikes through the neighborhood are our children. We are all part of this community, and once we are able to see ourselves and our children as participants in each of these groups, we will truly be sharing the roads in the City of Parkland. Please take a moment to visit the QR code, below, which is a link to helpful information from the Florida Department of Transportation.

If you would like to share your thoughts on bike and pedestrian safety, or if you have questions or comments you would like to share, I would love to hear from you. I can be reached via e-mail at rwalker@cityofparkland.org or via cell phone at (973) 390-1453. Of course, I am frequently available monthly at Parkland businesses and love to talk with residents there. I encourage you to visit the City’s website cityofparkland.org and click on the social media icon that you prefer, to ensure that you stay informed on events and helpful information.
