Happy Holidays!
T
he holiday season is upon us. With our incredible cultural and religious diversity, the winter holidays can have very different meanings for each of our readers. However, one constant is celebrating with friends and loved ones. Our family celebrates on Christmas Eve Eve (two days before Christmas) with an extended family dinner, followed by a “Yankee Swap” gift exchange. In a Yankee Swap, each participant brings a wrapped gift. The gifts are opened in sequence, where each player gets to unwrap a new gift or “steal” one that someone has already unwrapped. It is always great fun!
2023
Our kids often beg us to celebrate the fictional holiday Festivous, made famous on the sitcom Seinfeld. Our seventeen-year-old son is particularly interested in Festivous’ “airing of the grievances!” So far, we have successfully resisted! The Jaillet family and everyone at Our City Media wish you and your family a wonderful holiday season. We hope you take time to enjoy loved ones regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or even Festivous! Have a wonderful and safe Holiday Season.
The Gift that Lasts a Lifetime!

A DAY OF GRATITUDE
CORAL SPRINGS VETERANS HONORED AT VETERANS PARK
I
n Coral Springs, a heartfelt tribute was paid to our local veterans on Saturday, November 11th, during a Veterans Day Ceremony held at Veterans Park. The event drew a gathering of local veterans, their families, and dedicated members of the community, all coming together to show their appreciation. Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook took the opportunity to convey his gratitude and shared some thoughtful remarks to honor the veterans in attendance. The event's guest speaker, Tom Melville, a U.S. Naval Reserve veteran, added a significant depth to the proceedings with his inspiring address. Mr. Melville's remarkable military journey spanned from 1966 to 1993, marked by two combat tours in Southeast Asia aboard the U.S.S. Coral Sea and distinguished service in various Naval Reserve Intelligence units. As a solemn tribute to those who have selflessly served our nation, a ceremonial wreath-laying, the presentation of colors, the haunting strains of "Taps," and a moving salute volley were all part of the ceremony, symbolizing the deep respect and honor for our veterans.

FESTIVE FLAIR
A
EIGHT HOLIDAY DECORATING TIPS FOR SOUTH FLORIDA
s the holiday season approaches, it's time to bring some festive cheer to our homes in sunny South Florida. While we may not have the traditional winter wonderland with snow-covered landscapes, we have our own unique way of celebrating the holidays under the sun. Here are some holiday decorating tips tailored to our tropical paradise.
1. Embrace the Beachy Vibes: South Florida is famous for its stunning beaches, so why not incorporate beach-themed decor into your holiday setup? Think seashell ornaments, starfish accents, and even a mini beach-themed Christmas tree with light blue and sandy beige hues. 2. Outdoor Decor: With our mild winter climate, take advantage of decorating your outdoor spaces. Hang string lights, place potted plants with red and green flowers, and consider a palm tree adorned with lights and ornaments as a delightful twist on a Christmas tree. 3. Tropical Centerpieces: Instead of traditional holiday centerpieces, opt for arrangements featuring tropical flowers like hibiscus, orchids, and bird-of-paradise. Place them in festive vases or containers with beachy accents. 4. Seashell Wreaths: Create a unique wreath by crafting one from seashells collected during your beach trips. Add some faux greenery and a ribbon for a holiday touch. 5. Coastal Stockings: Upgrade your stockings to beachy versions with seashell,
starfish, or flip-flop motifs. Hang them on the mantel or a designated stocking holder. 6. Twinkling Lights: South Florida nights are perfect for creating a magical atmosphere with twinkling lights. Hang them on trees, fences, and around outdoor seating areas for a warm and inviting glow. 7. Outdoor Dining Al Fresco: Take advantage of the mild weather by setting up your holiday dinner or brunch outdoors. Decorate your outdoor dining area with tropical tableware, festive napkins, and candlelight. 8. Fresh Greenery: While pine trees may not grow naturally in South Florida, you can still find fresh greenery like eucalyptus and palm fronds to use in your holiday arrangements. In South Florida, holiday decorating is all about embracing our unique environment and infusing it with seasonal spirit. So, whether you're enjoying a beachside holiday or celebrating at home, these tips will help you create a festive atmosphere that's as warm and inviting as the South Florida sun. Happy decorating, and may your holidays be filled with joy and sunshine!

WILL YOUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS MAKE IT PAST JANUARY?
N
By Michael Feldman
ew Year’s resolutions. We all make them. We all try to maintain them. Whether it’s getting into shape, spending more time with family, or cleaning out the guest room closet, resolutions usually make it just as far as the end of January. This year, it’s not too late to accomplish one resolution that is often left neglected: establishing an estate plan. 5491 N. University Drive • Suite 102 Contrary popular belief, you need not Coral Springs,toFlorida 33067 be extremely wealthy to have an “estate www.feldmanesq.com plan.” In fact, *everyone* has an estate plan, that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you ritten information about our qualifications and experience. which is, simply put: Who will receive your property when you die and how will they get it? Of course, it’s better to actually “plan” your estate plan in advance in order to ensure your assets pass to those whom you wish in the manner you desire. A comprehensive estate plan addresses three major concerns: 1) effectively and efficiently pass your assets to the intended beneficiaries; 2) protect the inheritance of special needs beneficiaries (such as a disabled child; and 3) plan for the possibility of your future incapacity.
(954)227-7320
The first step when establishing an estate plan is to meet with an estate planning attorney to review your estate planning goals. Our firm provides clients with a questionnaire to complete prior to their consultation. This allows us to understand the client’s unique circumstances so our meeting can be focused on how to best address the client’s concerns. Every estate plan should include a Last Will & Testament and a set of Advance Directives, which allow you to designate someone to handle your legal, financial, and medical affairs if you cannot handle them for yourself. Advance Directives should be tailored to the needs of the client and include a Power of Attorney, Healthcare Surrogate Designation, and a Living Will. While it is possible to use joint ownership or “payable on death” designations to transfer assets after death, a Will provides a valuable safety net should direct-inheritance methods fail, as well as handling unforeseen assets that become part of your estate (such as a recovery from estate-related litigation). The use of a revocable living trust is sometimes advisable to both avoid probate of assets and handle circumstances that may prove

disastrous when relying on POD designations alone, such as when dealing with minors and special needs beneficiaries. As both an elder law and estate planning firm, we must be mindful of factors that can impact our client’s estate planning goals, such as the possibility of long term care in an ALF or skilled nursing facility. Often, we assist clients with qualifying for public benefits (such as veterans benefits or Medicaid), while maintaining their estate planning desires, to the extent possible. If you already have an estate plan, then you’re ahead of the game! But life is not static. We recommend reviewing your estate plan with an attorney every 2-3 years or after major life changes, such as divorce, the birth of a child, the passing of a beneficiary. January is almost here. It’s not too late to make 2024 the year you address your estate planning needs. Then you can finally get to work on the guest room closet.

SZIRO JEWELRY
F
A Legacy of Craftsmanship and Innovation in Coral Springs
or a quarter of a century, a family-owned gem has illuminated the heart of Coral Springs with the luster of fine craftsmanship and the warmth of personal touch. Sziro Jewelry, started by the visionary John Sziro in 1989, has grown from a booth known as J & S Jewelry into a local institution that weaves family traditions with the threads of innovation. John and his wife Kelly, uniting their creative forces, have sculpted a space where jewelry is not just sold but celebrated. From the pristine showroom to the hum of the full-scale manufacturing studio, every corner of their
2,000-square-foot store tells a story of dedication and passion. At Sziro Jewelry, the art of jewelry making is a dialog between the client's dreams and the Sziro family's mastery, yielding pieces that echo the uniqueness of the wearer. Sziro Jewelry’s mission is to uphold a tradition of trust, high ethical standards, and an unwavering commitment to excellence. As they look forward to welcoming new faces and old friends, the Sziros continue to share their love of jewelry, crafting not just pieces, but experiences that endure.
The Sziro Journey
John and Kelly began their journey when John began manufacturing jewelry in 1989. Three years later he met Kelly and soon they opened a unique 5-showcase booth at the American Diamond Exchange. John manufactured high-quality custom jewelry for the wholesale market while the couple maintained a small retail store in the exchange. Their collaboration flourished, and after six successful years at the exchange, the dynamic duo opened their own store, “Sziro” in 2001. The store stands as a testament to
the belief that jewelry is more than an adornment; it's a wearable art form. Sziro Jewelry is a reflection of their combined personal styles, forever evolving and redefining what it means to provide an extraordinary jewelry experience to their clients. This commitment has led them to become a mainstay in the Coral Springs community for more than 20 years.
Custom Jewelry Design
With their bespoke design services, Sziro Jewelry invites patrons to co-create pieces that capture their personal narratives. John and Kelly believe that jewelry is a wearable art form and a unique expression of one’s personal style. They offer endless possibilities, from classic and traditional to contemporary and whimsical. Utilizing state-of-the-art CAD Matrix, Wax Printing, and even B&D Welding alongside traditional wax casting, the Sziros ensure that every creation is as singular as the clients themselves. Sziro offers the ultimate jewelry shopping experience, with a passionate belief that every unique client deserves a piece of jewelry reflecting their one-of-a-kind persona.
26 / Our City Coral Springs / December 2023 / OurCityMedia.com
Sziro’s custom design process begins with capturing your vision. They will have in-depth discussions and picture references to capture your vision, followed by their expert designers using specialized computer software to create a detailed 3D model of your dream piece. Next, Sziro’s state-of-the-art rapid prototyping machine will create a highly detailed, life-sized wax model of your masterpiece-to-be. This will allow you to see and feel every intricate detail before it is brought to life in precious metal. Finally, their Master Jewelers will bring your design to life, casting it gold, silver, or platinum and meticulously setting exquisite gemstones.
Restoration and Repair
Beyond crafting new stories, Sziro Jewelry also preserves the old. Heirloom pieces, laden with history, are treated with reverence, their beauty and legacy meticulously restored on-site. UPDATE
By State Rep. Christine Hunschofsky
H
appy Holidays! Time has flown by this year, and it’s hard to believe that the holidays are already here. This has always been my favorite time of the year as it is an opportunity to reflect on what is truly important in life and an occasion to celebrate with family and friends. It is important to make these memories special since they stay with us and our children over the years. When our kids were young, we started many family traditions, including visiting Holiday Fantasy of Lights at Tradewinds Park (holidaylightsdrivethru.com). Now that they are older and away at college and work, I especially treasure this time of year because everyone comes home to celebrate the holidays with us. Although our boys are older now, they thankfully still humor my husband and me and go with us to check out the amazing display lights. This year, for the holidays, my office will once again be hosting an open house on Saturday, December 9, from 11 am-1 pm at our office at Coconut Creek City Hall, 4800 W. Copans Rd. Please stop by to say hello and have some refreshments. My team and I would love to see you and talk with you. We will also share more about how we can be of service to you and your family, as well as the work we do in the community and in Tallahassee. Speaking of Tallahassee, we have two committee weeks in December, and the 2024 Legislative Session is from January 9, 2024, through March 8, 2024. While so many of us are facing increases in property insurance rates and costs of living, I would like to hear from YOU and would appreciate it if you would fill out this survey and let me know what your priorities are for the upcoming session. Here is a link to my pre-session survey: https://tinyurl.com/SurveyD95 As 2023 comes to a close, we all have much to reflect on. Each year brings challenges, and how we navigate them and who we have around us can make all the difference. While it is an often-used phrase, it is one that I regularly look to: “Be the change you wish to see in this world.” As the world around us appears to become more divided and cruel, we each have an opportunity to make it better by practicing understanding, graciousness, and compassion. While no one of us can change the world, each of us has a part in making a positive difference in our homes, our communities, our workplaces, and our world. Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, another holiday, or no holiday at all, my family and I wish you and your family a happy and healthy December and all the best for the New Year ahead. May we all be blessed with family, friends, and love and care.

CORAL SPRINGS COMMISSION DECEMBER MESSAGE rom twinkling lights to festive tidings and good cheer, the holiday happenings taking place in Coral Springs this December aim to offer a flurry of opportunities for residents to experience the joy of the season. Kids can have a blast while parents enjoy a night to relax or kickstart their holiday shopping as part of Parents Night Out on Friday, December 1 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Coral Springs Gymnasium (2501 Coral Springs Drive.) Kids will enjoy pizza, movies, snacks, and games in a safe environment. Registration is required. Learn more by visiting CoralSprings.gov/ParentsNight. Downtown Coral Springs will serve as the holiday epicenter for festive celebrations all December long as part of the reimagined Downtown in December three-part event series. First, residents can mark the official start of the holiday season at Light up the Lawn on Saturday, December 2 from 5 to 7 p.m. at City Hall (9500 W Sample Road.) We invite you to join us as we formally light the City Hall Christmas tree while unveiling the new festive light displays which are available all month for families to take photos and enjoy fun interactions. Then, the community is invited to shop local and shop small for the holiday as part of the downtown Holiday Market on Saturday, December 9 from 5 to 7 p.m. at City Hall. The event will feature local vendors selling various gifts and goods to suit your holiday shopping lists. The annual Holiday Parade will take place on Wednesday, December 13 along Sample Road from 7 to 9 p.m. This year’s theme, Magical Memories: A Ride Down Memory Lane, aims to evoke fond memories of holidays past and present with uniquely designed floats from local organizations. For all holiday happenings, visit CoralSprings.gov/Events. As a reminder, Christmas Day falls on a Monday this year. If one of your waste collection days is regularly on Monday, December 25, garbage will be picked up on the next scheduled collection day. While celebrating the holidays, it is important to also remain eco-conscious. Learn more by visiting CoralSprings. gov/HolidayWaste. As we come together to celebrate the joy of the holiday season, we hope our events and activities invoke a sense of community pride and togetherness. We wish you all a wonderful holiday season filled with joy. This month’s Commission Meetings will take place on Wednesday, December 6 and Wednesday, December 20 at 6:30 p.m. As always, the public is invited to attend Commission meetings. The meetings are aired on CityTV, Blue Stream Channels 25, 25.7, 725 and on AT&T U-Verse channel 99. Meetings are also live streamed on CityTV.

■ FROM THE STATEHOUSE
DISTRICT 96 UPDATE
Pet of the Month
By State Representative Dan Daley
D
ear Neighbors and Friends, As we wrap up our first committee week, my team and I are excited to provide you with an update on the Special Session that took place in Tallahassee from November 6th to November 9th, 2023. The Special Session was a forum for extensive dialogue and diverse legislation. Against the backdrop of global turmoil, the Florida Legislature made clear its support for Israel and the Israeli people in their ongoing conflict with Hamas. The Legislature also approved HB 1C: Disaster Relief Aid Package and HB 7C Security Grants: Strengthening Communities Security Infrastructure. I also attended a closed-door session with the Consul General of Israel, who provided an update on their strategy moving forward. During Committee Weeks, we continue to engage with advocacy groups from across the state and from different sectors, ensuring an understanding of diverse perspectives between stakeholders and our office. This has strengthened our ability to craft legislation that resonates with the priorities of constituents and communities from District 96 and beyond. Our first bill, Jaime’s Law, amplifies our commitment to addressing pressing issues within our community. Alongside Senator Tina Polsky, I am proud to reintroduce HB 145: Sales of Ammunition, also known as “Jaime’s Law”. This bill, named after 14-year-old Jaime Guttenberg who tragically lost her life in the 2018 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, addresses the pressing issue of gun violence. Under Florida law, those prohibited from purchasing or possessing a firearm are also restricted from purchasing ammunition. However, a critical loophole exists, allowing vendors to skip conducting background checks on ammunition purchases. This proposed bill will close this loophole, ensuring that ammunition does not, once again, fall into the wrong hands. Thank you for entrusting me with the responsibility to represent your interests in Tallahassee; it is an honor. Should you ever require assistance, have questions, or wish to share your insights, please don't hesitate to contact our district office at 954-905-5503 or reach out to me via email at Dan.Daley@ myfloridahouse.gov. Your input and engagement are crucial to making a positive impact on our community and beyond.

■ MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR
PARKLAND UPDATE
T
By Mayor Rich Walker
he last month of the year is often the most complex when it comes to the many roles and responsibilities we take on in our daily lives. December is often a rearview mirror that reflects what we feel we have or have not accomplished over the past year. Add to that the expectations we have of ourselves and others year-round, the expectations others have of us, mixed with the stressors of local and national headlines, and we are looking at one the biggest sources of frustration many of us face throughout the holidays. I know it goes without saying, but the holiday season is full of hot buttons, with heightened anxieties and unrealistic expectations. In some situations, it seems like people are so angry and easily set off and it builds as we inch closer to the end of the year. I think it is helpful for us to put everything into perspective and take a step back. We only have 31 days in December. Are you expecting yourself or others to achieve something unrealistic in the next few weeks? The frenzy of the holidays will always be just that—a frenzy—but if we stop to weigh in on what is realistic—and what really matters—this last month of 2023 could be a much easier lift, in terms of stress and we handle difficult situations. It all begins with setting realistic expectations for yourself and, in some cases, sharing your limits and realistic expectations with others. Once you truly have perspective, what you are able to take on is much clearer. If you can’t take it on, don’t do it. As we enter the thick of the holiday season, remember to take a deep breath and enjoy your family and friends. When it all comes down to it, they are what really matter.
