Take Stock in What is Important this New Year BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET

I

n 1961 President John F. Kennedy delivered a speech before the Canadian Parliament in which he uttered the famous line, “What unites us is greater than what divides us!” With today’s political rhetoric and constant conflict on social media, perhaps those words have never rang truer. No matter what side of the spectrum you fall, we can all take great pride in knowing that together we can overcome anything – just think back to the dark days following 9-11. The New Year is a time for us to take stock in our place in the world and recognize that we truly are in this together. People are more reliant on one another today than at any time in history. The food we eat comes from all over the world. And, while we are globally connected through the internet, your iPhone or laptop was designed in California and assembled in China with a microprocessor fabricated in Korea made from materials mined in Australia and Africa. The magazine you are reading right now was printed in Jacksonville with ink from Japan on paper made from Canadian wood. The words, articles and ads, however, all come from the tireless efforts of our team right here in South Florida! Our ability to live, cooperate and work together, even with those we don’t agree with, has made our lives inarguably better. We think this willingness to focus on common goals is what has made America so successful over the past 200 years. So, as we enter into 2020 and the upcoming Presidential Election, let’s remember President Kennedy’s words, seeking the good in people and looking for the common ground that unites us all as Americans.

Happy New Year!

Families enjoyed lunch provided by IAFF Local 4321. Cooper City and Davie have been co-presenting this program for the past 12 years. Hudson says it was a natural partnership because the two communities are so close together and their emergency service personnel often find themselves servicing reciprocal calls. In addition to Community Autism Awareness Day, Battalion Chief Moran says his staff attends annual training with local autism awareness agencies to learn how small changes in a first responder’s approach can improve a child’s comfort level. “Reducing the number of personnel entering a home, lowering the volume on our radios, turning off the emergency lighting and using guides or electronic devices can make a big difference. Our personnel have even used videos or songs that the children know and love in order to communicate better and reduce stress.” The 12th annual Community Autism Awareness Day took place at BSO Fire Station 28 in Cooper City.

Home Care Assistance

Because Living at Home Is the Best Way to Live BY TERRY JAILLET

F

inding someone you can trust to care for an elderly family member can be frustratingly difficult. A qualified and reliable caregiver is a blessing for a family with a parent or grandparent who needs care. Matt and Mariela Rogers, owners of Home Care Assistance, have dealt with these struggles themselves. In fact, it is one of the reasons they founded their company. Home Care Assistance provides quality in-home care to seniors living in and around Pembroke Pines. Their caregivers are known for their responsiveness, empathy and expertise. Their positive and balanced approach to aging is centered on the evolving needs of older adults. It is what enables seniors to live healthier, happier lives at home.

wonderful Great Aunt Willa was clinically diagnosed with long-term dementia at the age of 74. The struggles of dealing with hospitalizations, doctor’s appointments, managing medications, and coordinating medical needs and care left our family confused, frustrated and extremely overwhelmed. Seeing our family struggle during that difficult period helped us realize that caring for an aging family member is a full-

Why is living at home the best way to live? When seniors live at home, they are able to maintain their freedom and a well-deserved quality of life. We can offer you or your loved one a comprehensive alternative to a nursing home or assisted living facility.

We sat down with Matt and Mariela to learn more about Home Care Assistance. Why did you start Home Care Assistance? We learned about the challenges that families face when caring for an elderly loved one after Matt’s

What type of care do you provide? We provide personalized care to help you or a loved one live well where most seniors prefer - at home. Our caregivers lend a hand with just about everything from bathing, dressing, and grooming, to preparing meals, medication reminders, and light housekeeping. In addition, our caregivers drive, so they often take clients to doctor’s appointments, to run errands, and even on recreational outings, e.g. the museum or a movie.

We can visit seniors anywhere they need care. We can even accompany seniors on vacations, enabling them to travel in safety and freedom.

FEATURE STORY

Great Aunt Willa time job and cannot be done alone. This is where our call for making a difference in the transitions of elder people came in, and this inspired us to open our own Home Care Assistance location right here in Pembroke Pines. Thankfully, with the right intervention at a critical time, both Matt’s aunt and parents began to enjoy life again just like before. She lived and enjoyed a simple, balanced life for 6 years in the family farm. Sadly, Aunt Willa passed away in September. We dedicate our growing company to her memory. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, crosswords puzzles and her favorite pastime - watching bird feeders at the family farm.

Obesity and Diabetes: Twin Epidemics

BY ANDREA BRETAL M.D.

This name was created by Dr.Francine Kaufman, MD word-renewed endocrinologist for her book “Diabesity”. In the United States, an estimated 70% of adults more than 20 years old are overweight or obese. According to statistical forecasts, by 2030, 51% of the US population will have obesity. Obesity and Diabetes type 2 reached epidemic proportions. You can see the picture and the parallel increase on both diseases and how is reaching all states. Diabesity is a key risk factor to develop heart disease including heart attacks or strokes. Diabesity can be defined as a metabolic dysfunction that ranges from mild blood sugar imbalance to full-blown type 2 diabetes. Diabesity includes: • abdominal obesity (i.e. “spare tire” syndrome); • dyslipidemia (low HDL, high LDL and high triglycerides); • high blood pressure; • high blood sugar (fasting above 100 mg/ dL, Hb1Ac above 5.5); • systemic inflammation; and, a tendency to form blood clots.

It affects more than one billion people worldwide, including 100 million Americans and 50% of Americans over 65. Recent statistics suggest that Diabesity may already be the leading cause of chronic disease and death in the world, and its impact is expected to rise dramatically in the next 25 years. As Dr. Kaufman wrote on her book: “We know that lifestyle changes can prevent diabetes. We’ve proven that if people eat right, lose

weight and become physically active, they can halt the progression to full-blown diabetes. I hope you will join me to set a new course, redefine and redirect progress, and stop the ‘diabesity’ epidemic.” - From Diabesity; Francine Kaufman (2006) So the question is, do we really need another diet? o do we really need to change our lifestyles and take responsibility for our own health? I see people coming everyday to my office looking for a real change not just another diet but to turn their life around, tired of taking medications, tired of feeling sick and tired, tired that they clothes don’t fit anymore, tired of losing weight with a diet and then gaining everything back again. Together as a community we are able to turn this epidemic around, join me in this path of changing people’s lives and break free of disease. Please share this article to help create awareness to someone you love. Dr. Andrea Bretal, M.D. is the founder of Weston Medical Health & Wellness. She is board certified in internal medicine and a Diplomate of the American Board of Obesity Medicine. She is a member of the Obesity Medicine Association, Obesity Coalition and the American Medical Association. For more info call 954-389-1800.

High and Low Ankle Sprains: What’s the Difference? BY MICHAEL M. COHEN, DPM, FACFAS

A

nkle sprains are the most common musculoskeletal injury in athletes. Recent estimates indicate that there are approximately 30,000 sprains in the United States per day, accounting for 10% of emergency room visits and constituting 15-30% of athletic injuries. The U.S. Product Safety Commission reports that on the average over one billion dollars is spent to treat this injury per year. There are two types of ankle sprains, a low and a high ankle sprain each of which is distinctively different. Three bones form the ankle joint: the tibia (shin), fibula (outer bone) and the talus which are held together with a series of ligaments. Ligaments are bands of tough fibrous connective tissue which stabilize and guide a joint’s movement. One sprains an ankle when a ligament has been damaged or torn usually after a twisting movement. If torn, the joint may become unstable and more susceptible to injury. In fact, the greatest predictor of an ankle sprain is a previous ankle sprain with the recurrence rate being highest the first year after injury. If the ankle remains chronically unstable after injury arthritis will develop. A foot and ankle specialist will

PRIVATE SCHOOL GUIDE

BY BEVERLY PERKINS

W

hen considering sending your child to a private school, it is vital to take into account various factors, especially if you have to pay a pretty penny to attend. In this day and age, it is evident that academics are getting more rigorous, standardized tests are increasingly difficult, and the pressure of college is no joke. Colleges today want a well-rounded, educated, unique students, so it is key to find a private school that will enable your child to embody these qualities. Find a school with good extracurriculars The first factor to consider should be the size of the school. It will be harder for your child to stand out in a very large class. Most colleges compare students against their class, not other schools, so this factor is very important. It will be easier for your child to stand out in a small pond than in a large sea of students. Additionally, you should ensure that there are ample extracurriculars at your selected private school that appeal to your child. Having good extracurriculars and sports teams should be a deciding factor when selecting a private school. Colleges often look to recruit athletes from wellknown private schools. A wide variety of extracurriculars gives your child the option to be involved in an organization that actually interest them. Colleges want ambitious students, so leadership positions in clubs and organizations are crucial to your child’s success. Prioritizes academics and education Another factor to consider would be the passing rates of Advanced Placement (AP) and Cambridge’s Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) exams. High passing rates indicate that the educators at the school

Passing an exam often allows the student to receive college credit, so

they won’t have to retake that course in college. Not only do high passing rates increase the likelihood of your child receiving college credit, but it implies that your child is more likely to do better in the course throughout the year as well. Academics that are challenging, high passing rates on ap exams Apart from just the passing rate itself, parents should also pay attention to score distributions. The highest possible AP score is a 5, and the lowest passing score is a 3. A school may have a high passing rate, but it is important to know the proportion of students receiving 4’s and 5’s, not just 3’s. Different scores may earn a student different credits at certain colleges. Although it is important for passing rates to be high, the environment of the school will also contribute to your child’s success. School should be a place where students should feel comfortable, safe, and welcomed. It is now more important than ever that your child feels safe at school, but as a parent, you should be certain that you feel comfortable just the same as you send your child off to that school every weekday.

Guidance counselors that care about your child’s future Most importantly, students should feel comfortable reaching out to guidance counselors and advisors. Having supportive guidance counselors and understanding teachers can truly have a positive impact on your child’s high school experience. Counselors should be available to aid with schedules, college applications, college essays, and even personal issues. Good college advisors and counselors are imperative to making the college application process as seamless as possible. It is important to make sure that guidance counselors and college advisors are accessible to students at all times. Overall, there are many factors to consider when selecting the right private school for your child. The importance of these factors may vary depending on your child’s interests and priorities. Although this information may seem overwhelming, it should be helpful in narrowing down which school is the best fit for your child. With such amazing options in the area, no matter where your child ends up, they will be receiving an amazing education.

SCHOOL NEWS

Davie Elementary Students Sample Farm to Table Fare BY STACEY BOMSER

S

tudents at Davie Elementary School were cool as cucumbers as they sampled locally grown produce during Florida CRUNCH. Representatives from the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences (UF/IFAS) Extension Broward Family Nutrition Program (NFP) and UF/ IFAS Extension Broward County Master Gardeners joined forces to teach children about where our food comes from and the importance of healthy eating to combat childhood obesity. Nearly 750 Davie Elementary students sampled freshly picked cucumbers, grown right here in Broward County – and the consensus was they were delicious. UF/IFAS Public Health Specialist Bridget Lane, RDN, says it’s important to teach children about locally grown produce. “Agriculture education empowers students to understand the importance of eating more locally grown produce items. When we purchase and consume more locally grown crops, we are contributing to the economy and supporting our Florida farmers,” she explains. “Additionally, when students have an understanding of the food production system, they are more inclined to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables on their own.” Davie Elementary was one of five elemen-

tary schools in Broward County to participate in Florida CRUNCH. According to Lorna Bravo, UF/ IFAS Extension Broward County Director/Urban Horticulture Agent, the one-day event took place at schools across the state to celebrate National Farm to School Month. “Florida CRUNCH raises awareness of Florida’s grown produce and healthy eating by highlighting one fruit or vegetable for students to learn about and sample in a taste test,” states Bravo, adding that the event also encourages schools to serve more Florida-grown produce as part of their cafeteria nutrition programs. The Florida CRUNCH curriculum included educating students on local agriculture practices in Florida, how many farms there are in the state, and which crops are grown locally throughout the school year. In addition, the Broward County Commission issued a proclamation to the Davie-based UF/IFAS Extension declaring October as National Farm to School Month in Broward County. Mayor Dale

Holness presented the proclamation which recognized the impact that UF/IFAS FNP has made on influencing positive eating and food selection behaviors that ultimately help improve the health of the community at large. “We are grateful to Broward County for acknowledging the value of agricultural education and Farm to School activities,” states Lane. “UF/IFAS Extension Broward County is excited to continue growing the Farm to School movement and urban agriculture education to increase fresh produce access.”

Climb Aboard the New G

etting to and from Miami is about to get easier and faster thanks to the new 75 Express Bus. It provides direct service from the park and ride lots at the BB&T Center in Sunrise and Miami Gardens Drive (@ I-75) to the Miami Airport Station, where you can transfer to local rail or bus to destinations throughout MiamiDade County. The new premium bus service begins on January 13th and for the first five days, all riders ride free.

The 75 Express Bus is funded by the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) and operated by Broward County Transit. It builds upon the success of the 95 Express Bus and 595 Express Bus services, which continually receive rave reviews. Riders who use those bus services rate them satisfactory or above satisfactory. “Express buses have proven to be very successful in South Florida which says a lot about the type of service they provide because typically we are looked at as a location where people love their cars,” states South Florida Commuter Services Director Jeremy Mullings. Fast, Comfortable, Convenient The Express Buses are used primarily by riders who own their own cars, but welcome the convenience, comfort and cost savings of commuting in the coach-style buses. One-way fares on the 75 Express Bus are available for as little as $1.30 and monthly passes cost less than $100. The 75 Express Bus will offer free Wi-Fi, air-conditioned comfort, comfortable seating and will travel in the express lanes for faster more reliable travel times. Service will be provided every 30 minutes during the peak morning and afternoon commute times. Commuters can take comfort in knowing that life’s little emergencies are not an issue

thanks to FDOT’s Guaranteed Ride Home program. This government-funded program will cover the cost of Lyft or taxi rides home if the Express Bus is unavailable and you need to leave work early for an emergency or have to stay late for unscheduled overtime. The afternoon commute begins at 3:45 pm, with the last bus leaving the Miami Airport Station at 7:20 pm and scheduled to arrive at the BB&T Center by 8:24 pm. Broward County Transit Senior Planner Tara Crawford says, “The 75 Express Bus gives you a comfortable, stress-free and easy connection to the Miami International Airport via

the Miami Airport Station, with connections to the Civic Center and Downtown Miami/Brickell.” Transfers via Miami Dade Transit buses and Metro Rail trains make it easy to get around the Miami metro area. The Express Bus system is a core component of the express lanes along I-75, I-595, and I-95. The express lanes are multi-modal facilities designed to reduce traffic congestion and promote choices in how and when residents commute.

LEGALLY SPEAKING

What is a Revocable Living Trust? BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE ong gone are the days when trusts were only for the rich and famous. Why? Because creating a revocable living trust is less about estate tax and more about avoiding unnecessary costs of probate and asset transfer, and creating protections for your loved ones. A properly drafted and funded trust can also deliver an inheritance with a valuable creditor and predator protection. The following scenarios may help understand the benefits of a trust and why including one in your estate plan is worth considering: Meet our hypothetical family, George and Jenny, happily married for 25 years with three children, Jessica, age 20, Josh, age 15, and Jonathan, age 12. Both George and Jenny have created wills, leaving everything to each other. After they are both gone, their wills leave it all to their children. Sounds like a logical estate plan? Maybe not. Tragically, George dies suddenly and, according to his will, all of his property transfers to Jenny. The following year, while rushing to an appointment on a rainy morning, Jenny loses control of her car and rear-ends a bus full of trial lawyers heading to the annual “I’ll See You in Court!” Convention in Fort Lauderdale. Several attorneys are injured and predictably lawsuits follow. Now, what happens to Jenny’s inheritance from George? It’s likely all gone to creditors. What is left to raise her children? Perhaps nothing. If George and Jenny had used a trust in their estate plan, the final outcome may have been different. While Jenny’s property would still be subject to creditor claims, her inheritance from George inside a trust would be safe for her and their children. In another sad scenario, imagine Jenny dies first. George later remarries Susan, a woman with four adult children from several marriages. What happens when George passes? His property, including what he inherited from Jenny, may go to Susan and eventually to Susan’s family. George and Jenny’s children could be completely disinherited! With a properly drawn trust, George and Jenny can rest assured that even if the surviving spouse remarries, their money will go to their children. Finally, think of George and Jenny happily enjoying retirement but unfortunately not too fond of their daughter’s husband, Robert. Jenny fears that their son-in-law will never earn a decent living, and may be dependent on their daughter to support him for the rest of his life. George worries that if they leave an inheritance to their daughter and she ultimately divorces Robert, a substantial portion of her inheritance could be lost to her “no-good husband.” If assets are left to their children in a trust, it will not be commingled with marital property. Therefore, in the event of a divorce, an heir’s inheritance will not be the subject of division and distribution. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

ASK THE EXPERT

Early Orthodontic Treatment BY DR. MARTA GROSMAN

T

here is no doubt that the average age of orthodontic patient has lowered through the years. Just open a yearbook from the 50’s and 60’s and you will see many young adults wearing the stereotypical “train tracks” across their teeth. Movies have spoofed the usage of head gears during the high school years, which was common practice in that era. Braces have become smaller, sleeker, more colorful, and worn with pride by many preteens. For those of you who have young children at home, the main question is whether early treatment is right for your child. To best answer this question, it is first important to define some terms. When discussing “early treatment” I personally prefer the term interceptive treatment. It has the connotation of catching something before it becomes a bigger problem. The more common and practical term is “Phased” orthodontic treatment. In this case, treatment done at an earlier age (usually between 6-9 years old) is referred to as Phase I. It is aimed at correction of habits, skeletal discrepancies as well as severe abnormalities in dental eruption. The later treatment, Phase II, is usually done at around 11-13 years old in order to place all permanent teeth in an ideal position. I call it more practical because in most cases the second treatment is needed. The name serves as a reminder to the parents of this fact. Currently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the first orthodontic evaluation occur by age 7. Does this mean that all children require phased orthodontic treatment? Certainly not. The criteria for starting early treatment should be better or more predictable results. In my opinion, this is certainly the case when the upper jaw is too narrow and must be expanded, when upper front teeth are so protrusive (“buck”) that the incidence of trauma is much more likely (unless corrected), and cases of underbite (when the lower jaw is forward of the upper jaw). These treatments are “no brainers” for two reasons. The body of the younger patient is more amenable to these specific orthopedic (growth) corrections and statistically the preteen is more likely to traumatize a front tooth than at any other time. There are other times that treatment may be done for psychosocial reasons as some children are very conscious of cosmetics. For those parents who are considering early treatment for their children, I recommend listening with an open mind. See if the reasons for starting treatment make sense to you. The rule of thumb would be “if it does not make sense, don’t do it!!!. I find that most parents have a life philosophy which may make them either more or less open to preventative type treatments. As a parent, I find that I know what my child will be able to handle and be up to. Most importantly, if you decide as a family to start, have fun with it. Some Things to Consider

It is difficult to try and sit down and write an article this month without thinking about the events in Newtown Connecticut that occurred on December 14th. There has been much discussed about gun control and mental health issues and hopefully, by the time this article is released, there will be some progress in these areas. As a family law attorney, one of the issues which somewhat jumped out at me was the fact that the shooters’ parents were divorced. It seems that in many instances when a young adult goes on a rampage like this, he/she comes from a broken home. I certainly am not suggesting that children of divorced households are more likely to be involved in this type of behavior, but I do think that continuing issues between the parents does lead to a greater likelihood that a child can suffer from some emotional problems. Please understand, I am not a psychologist and I am not suggesting that I am qualified to make any diagnosis, but approximately 30 years of practicing family law has allowed me to make several observations. From what I read the shooter in Newtown lived with his mother and had no contact with his father for years. Perhaps that scenario had nothing to do with his mental state, but it certainly did not suggest a loving relationship. It is important that parents going through a divorce always remember how their actions will affect their children. Unfortunately, all too often parents focus on getting even with their spouse and forget that the children are “in the middle” of the conflict. It is important for a child to know that they can rely on both parents for love and support. All too often this is not the case. Children are not to be used as “pawns” in a divorce. The law in Florida is very clear in that a parent who may be behind in the payment of child support cannot be deprived of time with his/ her child(ren). In addition, child support cannot be withheld because a parent is preventing the other parent from exercising his/her time sharing. In spite of the possible financial issues which may be in controversy, time with each parent is essential. It is no longer uncommon for each parent to have equal time with a child. Unfortunately, often parents resist what is best for a child due to possible financial consequences. In Florida, one of the factors which affect child support is the number of overnight visits each parent may have. Instead of focusing on what is best for the child, it becomes an issue of how much will I pay or how much will I receive? Unfortunately, sometimes parents continue this battle long after the Final Judgment has been entered. Post-judgment battles concerning the children can be just as damaging. I strongly urge parents to provide counseling for their children. Even the most “peaceful divorce” has an effect on the children. Just remember, a divorce isn’t only about you! n The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS

Importance of Sports Nutrition. DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP

W

ould you run your beloved car low on oil, coolant, or transmission fluid? Obviously not! Then, why are you engaging in an amateur or professional sport without checking under your hood for hormones, micronutrients, and cellular nutrition levels? If you are neglecting this, as opposed to your car, you will experience physical pain, emotional performance frustration and in the worst-case scenario physical injury. Accomplishing any athletic goal or remaining at the top (especially after age 40) requires a unique competitive advantage. The role of micronutrients and hormones is often overlooked but they are essential to give your cells a quantum leap forward to improve athletic focus, strength, endurance, and recovery – the hallmarks of an exceptional athlete! Our team at Bellissimo Medical specializes in functional medicine with an emphasis in Bio-identical hormones replacement therapy, high-quality medical-grade supplements as well as specialized tests to measure levels of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, metabolism, metabolites, antioxidant function, and immune response. Aside from the obvious and well-known vitamins B, D, E, C, etc., there are other crucial examples of sports nutrition elements essential for optimal performance. Asparagine: Increases the capacity of muscle to use fatty acids and spare glycogen, thus increasing time to physical exhaustion. Serine: Increases aerobic capacity and keeps a healthy hormone profile by buffering post-workout cortisol levels, which can cause excess muscle breakdown. Magnesium: Is key to the production of ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) which is the body’s main storage form of energy. This element improves aerobic performance, muscle strength, and repair. Zinc: Interacts with hormones to improve body composition and strength. Deficiency impairs peak oxygen uptake during exercise (Supplementation should be accompanied by copper). All sports activities should be complemented by optimal nutrition to spark and enable optimal performance, avoid injury and conquer your set goals. IT’S THEIR BUSINESS

Slender Fit U Will Help You Lose Weight and Get Healthier BY DEBBY TEICH

I

s focusing on health and well-being is at the top of your list of New Year’s resolutions? After celebrating the holidays with family and friends and indulging in high calorie foods at festive meals and parties, are your clothes feeling a little tighter and the numbers on the scale a little higher? If you have struggled with diets in the past, Slender Fit U can help you lose that holiday bulge and achieve your goal of getting healthier in 2019. It works fast - without exercise and hunger pains! Slender Fit U is helping clients lose the weight, get healthier and even reduce or eliminate medications with a very simple to follow medically supervised weight loss program. Clients typically lose 1⁄2 to 1 pound of actual body fat per day without exercise, diet pills or packaged foods. The Slender Fit U program also helps clients modify their relationship with food and eating habits, resulting in an easily maintained, longterm weight loss. Owner and Program Director Geri Kelleher, often referred to as the “HCG Guru,” truly understands the benefits of the program and works closely with her clients to help them achieve maximize results. She lost 25 pounds in six weeks on Geri Kelleher, Owner the program and has and Program Director kept it off for 11 years. Slender Fit U changed her life forever. Soon after, she started helping others achieve their own weight loss goals. In 2010, she opened a clinic in Davie. A few years later she opened a second clinic in Coral Springs. Geri answered some commonly asked questions about the Slender Fit U program. What do love most about your job? The best part of my job is seeing people change before my eyes and watching them get their confidence back. Over the years, I have helped thousands of people achieve their weight loss goals with this easy program. How does Slender Fit U differ from similar programs? My clients tell me the difference is the way we treat people. We stay involved with all of our clients; they are not just a number. We make sure that every client gets the proper guidance and support throughout the program and achieves their weight loss goals. Also, we don’t water down the HCG. We give it in the strongest dosage available for weight loss. Do you offer B12 shots? Yes. We also give injectable prescription B12. The Lipotropic Vitamin B12 shots help detoxify the liver and increase metabolism and energy levels. The combination of HCG and B12 helps assure maximum weight loss without feeling hungry all the time or suffering from bad moods. Is the diet easy? To quote one of my clients, “Besides being the most effective diet I have ever gone on, this

42 JANUARY 2020 | OUR CITY MEDIA | OURCITYMEDIA.COM

was the easiest diet I have ever been on. Almost every morning when I got on the scale, my weight would be down. No long workouts, no agonizing hunger pains. That’s how great this diet is.” How much can clients expect to lose? The typical person will lose ½ to 1 pound of body fat per day without exercise or special foods. How many programs do you offer? Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. On the 23-day program, women typically lose 15 pounds and men will typically lose 20 to 25 pounds. On the 46-day program, the numbers average 30 pounds for women and 40-50 pounds for men. Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety percent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the HCG/B12 program, you go on a threeweek maintenance program, gradually introducing a higher calorie diet and making sure that you do not gain any more than two or three pounds. This will then help lock in a new “normal” weight for your body allowing you to more easily maintain the weight loss as you return to normal eating. The diet helps “rebalance” the metabolism. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, you easily modify your relationship with food and eating to maintain long- term weight loss. What makes the diet so effective? Unlike other “diets,” this program reshapes and re-sculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. You are not losing muscle mass, or water. You also lose multiple inches and dress sizes and your shape changes. Are clients medically supervised? Yes. Before starting the diet, you will get a physical examfrom one of the medical doctors associated with the program. This is included in the cost of the program and involves no co-pay on your part. David lost 53 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

AFTER

"I feel incredible. I haven't weighed this little in at least a decade. The diet was easy to follow and I lost over 50 pounds. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who is serious about losing a lot of weight." – David

Maria lost 27 pounds in six weeks. BEFORE

AFTER

"I'm very happy with my results. It is also a very friendly environment. I will recommend Slender Fit U to my friends and family." – Maria

Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low-calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed. How does the weight loss program work? It is a scientifically researched program that combines HCG and a low-calorie diet during the 23 or 46-day program. HCG, which is short for Human Chronic Gonadotropin, is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists normally in men and women. The female body uses this substance during pregnancy where high levels are produced to almost completely control the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism. Does the HCG have side effects? Because HCG is a natural substance, the program is very safe with no side effects. What foods are on the diet? There are no packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes proteins, fruit and vegetables. This makes for an easy transition onto stabilization and then back to regular life. Are clients hungry on the diet? Most people experience no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They are getting anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 calories from their stored fat, depending on how much fat they have. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. Slender Fit U clients usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800-calorie limit! SEE AD PAGE 5

Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www.SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376.

REAL ESTATE

Do You Have 2020 Vision For Your Real Estate Future? BY ZONA HORTON n December of 2019, top economists met and predicted the U.S. economy to continue expanding into 2020 -- projecting real estate prices will rise and a recession will remain unlikely. According to NAR, “this group expects an annual unemployment rate of 3.7% next year with a small rise to 3.9% in 2021.” This is the lowest unemployment rate in years. Was 2019 a great year for homeownership? Mortgage rates were 4.63% (substantially higher than they are today). If you were waiting for the best time to make a move, market conditions have improved significantly and will continue into 2020. Today’s low mortgage rates combined with increasing wages are making homes much more affordable than they were just one year ago. The average annual 30-year fixed mortgage rates of 3.8% and 4.0% are expected for 2020 and 2021, respectively. Annual median home prices are forecasted to increase by 3.6% in 2020 and by 3.5% in 2021. “Real estate is on firm ground with little chance of price declines,” said NAR’s Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. “However, in order for the market to be healthier, more supply is needed to assure home prices, as well as rents, do not consistently outgrow income gains.” If you are renting, it is time to jump into homeownership in 2020 because apartment rents are expected to rise by 3.8% and 3.6%, respectively, in 2020 and 2021. To line the pockets of your landlord is a shame – it will preclude you from leveraging the equity in order to build your wealthy Real Estate portfolio. “Residential and commercial real estate investment remains attractive as we approach the start of a new decade,” said NAR President Vince Malta. “Increased home building can serve as a stimulator for the overall economy, and we strongly encourage more homes to be built as buyer demand remains strong.” 2020 is the year to consider moving into a new home, investing the equity you have accumulated in your current home toward a down payment on a new one that better meets your needs and the needs of your family. The best way to achieve wealth is to move up in square footage or downsize to luxury on the east side. Many homeowners access the algorithms of several popular websites; however, the best evaluations come from a trained Real Estate professional. As professionals, we schedule a “seller consultation” and/or a “buyer consultation” and provide recommendations for getting top dollar for your home in the shortest amount of time – as well as show you options for your next purchase. Coordinating your “sell and buy” transactions are best handled by an “experienced Realtor” -- as we stay on top of the photographers, marketing department, inspectors, mortgage brokers, title companies and attorneys. Our job is to make sure that all are keeping your home sale and purchase top of mind which results in peace of mind, successful closings, and happy homeowners! Hope you have a Happy and Healthy New Year. Look to the professionals to help you strategize your 2020 Real Estate goals!

ASK THE MAYOR

Davie Update BY MAYOR JUDY PAUL hope you all had a wonderful holiday and are ready for a new year full of promise and hope. Davie received the National Institute for Government Procurement (NIGP’s) Outstanding Agency Accreditation Award which formally recognizes excellence in Public Procurement through the establishment of a body of standards that provides evidence of sound procurement practices. This award is also a recognition of the Procurement Team’s efforts and commitment in providing quality services while reducing costs whenever possible. The accreditation process evaluates agencies against one hundred and thirtytwo best practices criteria. An agency must meet a minimum of 100 criteria to qualify for the recognition. The Town received credit for 102 out of the 132 questions with a minimum requirement of 100 to qualify for accreditation. This is the first time the Town has received this accreditation. The Town of Davie is the only municipality in Broward County to receive this accreditation; one of nine in the tri-county area and one of seventeen total in the state to achieve this recognition. Broward County and the Broward Sheriff’s office are the only other two agencies to receive this award in Broward. Only 152 government agencies in total have achieved this distinction out of 3,000 NIGP member agencies throughout the United States and Canada. This award demonstrates the highest standard of competency in the public purchasing profession and emphasizes that the agency receiving the accreditation can make sound decisions that reflect maximum value for your taxpayer’s dollar. I continually speak of the environment and follow a path to sustainability on my own property. My latest adventure is the introduction of a bee hive (box). My bees are so sweet. I sit by the box and watch them come and go delivering pollen to the hive. They are curious about my presence and one even landed on my arm. I engaged in conversation as I do with all living creatures and was treated to a nice visit If you are calm and remain still they are calm. Here are a few facts about bees from the South Florida Beekeepers Association. Did you know that: 1. Honey bees must gather nectar from two million flowers to make one pound of honey. 2. One bee has to fly about 90,000 miles – three times around the globe – to make one pound of honey. 3. The average bee will make only 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime. 4. A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers during a collection trip. 5. A honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour. 6. The bee’s brain is oval in shape and about the size of a sesame seed, yet it has a remarkable capacity to learn and remember things. For example, it is able to make complex calculations on distance travelled and foraging efficiency. 7. Honey bees communicate with one another by dancing. 8. A colony of bees consists of 20,000-60,000 honey bees and one queen. Worker honey bees are female, live for about 6 weeks and do all the work. 9. The queen bee can live up to 5 years and is the only bee that lays eggs. the is the busiest in the summer months, when the hive needs to be at its maximum strength, and lays up to 2500 eggs per day. 10. Larger than the worker bees, the male honey bees (also called drones), have no stinger and do no work. All they do is mate. 11. Honey has antiseptic properties and was historically used as a dressing for wounds and a first aid treatment for burns and cuts. 12. Honey bees have been producing honey in the same way for 150 million years. 13. The honey bee is the only insect that produces food eaten by man.
