This Valentine’s Day, Show Someone You Love Them
E
ach year, on February 14th, millions of people around the world demonstrate their love for someone special by giving Valentine’s Day gifts. While chocolate, flowers or jewelry remain the most popular presents, there are many more interesting options available. People who appreciate sentiment more than financial value may give a hand-written coupon book to their love, complete with “free massage” or “I do the dishes” coupons, to be redeemed by their mate at a future date. Others may give a gift in support of their partner’s passion -- a new 3-wood for a golfer or a set of paint brushes for an artist. Other options include heart-shaped pizzas or twohanded mittens, meant for lovers to keep warm while holding hands (probably not the most practical present here in South Florida). Personally, we prefer the simple Sweetheart candies with “be mine” stamped on the side. No matter what you give, if you give from your heart, your Valentine is sure to be happy. Have a wonderful Valentine’s Day!

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 02/28/17) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the left. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. Join the Davie Community Emergency Response Team BY DEBBY TEICH

urricanes, tornadoes, plane crashes and building collapses, as well as other natural disasters and large scale tragic events, are often reminders that we are all vulnerable. If Davie were to experience a true emergency, communication failures and road blockages might prevent people from accessing emergency services they have come to expect at a moment’s notice through 911. It could take hours or even days for public safety personnel to reach everyone in need. A group of Davie residents is trained to respond in an emergency to help themselves, as well as their friends, families and neighbors until the proper help arrives. They are members of Davie’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). The next training class begins on February 7. CERT is a FEMA program that educates citizens about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. CERT members use the training learned in the classroom and during exercises to assist others in their neighborhood or workplace. They are able to provide basic care that will help limit further injury to disaster victims and lessen the possibility of further damage to property. CERT members also are encouraged to take a more active role in emergency preparedness projects in the

community. In order to qualify for Davie CERT, team members must be over 18 years old and live or work in the Town of Davie. Classes meet from 6pm to 8:30pm for eight weeks at the Davie Fire Administration Building, located at 6901 Orange Drive. The training is usually delivered in 3-hour sessions, one evening a week, over a 7-8 week period. It contains both instruction and practical application of skills in a variety of areas, including Disaster Preparedness, Disaster Fire Suppression, Disaster Medical Operation, Light Search and Rescue Operations, Disaster Psychology and Team Organization, and more. Class size is limited and advanced registration is required. There is no charge for the classes. Longtime Davie resident Dave Horowitz plans to attend a session. “I love the Town of Davie,” said Horowitz. “If a disaster were to occur, I want to make sure I am in a position to help!” Pre-registration is required. Visit www.davie-fl.gov, click community then CERT, or go to the site directly at http://www.daviefl.gov/Pages/DavieFL_PIO/CERT/index. For more information, email cert@davie-fl.gov.

Cooper City Couples to Say I Do…Again COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
V
alentine’s Day is a time for love and romance. More than 20 Cooper City couples are expected to celebrate the holiday by renewing their vows during the “Say I Do…Again” ceremony on February 10, at 6pm, at the Cooper City Community Center. Couples must pre-register in person by February 7. The event is for Cooper City couples and their guests. Some come to celebrate their first anniversaries, while others come back every year and plan their Valentine’s celebration around it. “Renewing your wedding vows at ‘Say I Do...Again’ is a perfect way to reaffirm your commitment and devotion to the one you love,” said Chris Garcia, Recreation Director for the Cooper City Recreation Department. “Join us for a special way to start the Valentine weekend.” The ceremony includes a walk down the aisle, flowers, photo under the wedding arch, customary cutting of the cake, refreshments, prizes from local businesses, and a certificate of re-affirmation from the City. Each participant is encouraged to bring their favorite wedding photo to share. Over the years, some couples have arrived dressed in their wedding attire, while others are more casual. During the registration process, each couple
provides information about themselves, such as how many years they have been married, where they met, and how many children they have. As each one is called up individually to “walk the aisle,” some of this information is shared with others at the event. Last year, couples also played a version of the Not-So-Newlywed Game. Everyone was asked a series of questions and each person gave the answer they thought their partner would. Some of the questions were: “Who would your partner say is the better driver?” and “Who would your partner say is a better kisser?” The cost is $5 per couple with up to 6 guests per couple allowed at no charge. Couples must register in-person by February 7th at the Cooper City Community Center or Pool and Tennis Center. Couples must be residents of Cooper City. Children must have adult supervision at all times. Space is limited. For information, call 954-434-4300, ext. 233 or visit www.coopercityfl.org.

Davie’s Actors Community Theatre Presents Cactus Flower BY DEBBY TEICH

his month, Davie residents can experience live theater right in their own neighborhood. The Actors Community Theatre of Davie will be presenting Cactus Flower by Abe Burrows. Performances will be held at the Davie Pine Island MultiPurpose Center on February 10, 11, 17, 18, 24, 25 at 8pm, as well as February 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 at 2pm. “The plays are always very professionally done and you cannot beat the price,” said John Goodman, who has attended many of the productions. In the show, a philandering dentist keeps his many affairs at bay by claiming to be married with children. When the ruse threatens to catch up with him, he drafts his prickly nurse to pose as his “wife.” She blossoms and he finds himself falling in love with the lovely “cactus flower” right under his very nose. ACT of Davie’s production of Cactus Flower is being directed by Carla Zackson Heller. Cast members include: Sarah Knoche (Toni Simmons), Dante’ DiGiacomo (Igor Sullivan), Lory Reyes (Stephanie Dickinson), Brian McCormack (Dr. Julian Winston), Ron Torres (Harvey Greenfield), William Roach (Antonio Santorelli), Karen Roach (Mrs. Dixon Durant) and Brenda Nicholas (Boticelli’s springtime). ACT Board members are actively involved in every production. They include: Dana Fredebaugh (President), Bonnie Ladich (VP), Sylvia Alexander (Secretary), Fern Katz (Treasurer), David Alexander, Carole Czvekus, Christopher Harrington, Barry Katz, and William Roach. There are also many dedicated volunteers, including Mary Ellen Meeks, Adele Robbins, and Marie Seibel (program/postcard designer).

“ACT continues to thrive thanks to our enthusiastic audiences, the dedication and commitment of our volunteers - the Board of Directors, the actors, directors, production team, ticketing staff and concession crew - and the sponsorship of the Town of Davie,” said Fredebaugh. Since 2000, ACT has provided residents with a way to enjoy local theater at affordable prices. The volunteer group is funded by the Town of Davie and run by its Board of Directors. ACT’s script committee selects three shows to produce every year. After Board approval, they announce the call for directors and actors by sending emails through the ACT database and posting notices on social media and on several websites, including the Town of Davie’s. The director, chosen by the Board, selects the cast members, who have ranged in age from 6 to 80 plus. Some are first-time actors, while others have been acting for years. The plays are performed over two or three consecutive weekends at the Davie Pine Island Park Multipurpose Center and often sell-out. The last production of the season will be I Never Sang for My Father by Robert Anderson, which will be held on May 12, 13, 19, 20 at 8pm and 13, 14, 20, 21, 2017 at 2pm.
All productions are held at the Davie Pine Island Park Multipurpose Center, 3801 S. Pine Island Rd. Tickets are $12 at the door; $10 in advance or $8 for groups of 10 or more. For information, call 954-327-3941, or send an email to actofdavie2016@ gmail.com or visit bit.ly/ACT-shows.

Friends of Long Key Hold Photo Contest and Nature Walk COMMUNITY NEWS
BY DEBBY TEICH
N
ature photographers have an opportunity to compete for cash prizes in a photo contest sponsored by Friends of Long Key (FOLK). The non-profit organization supports the heavily-forested Long Key Natural Area & Nature Center in west Davie. The deadline to submit photos is February 28, at 5pm. Many residents have fond memories of the Kapok Tree Inn that was once located there. In the 70’s and 80’s, they celebrated weddings, anniversaries, graduations and other momentous occasions at the restaurant and catering hall. The Kapok Tree closed in 1988 and the county bought the property two year later. In 2008, it became the Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center. At 164.8 acres, this site is one of the largest natural areas managed by Broward County Parks and Recreation. There is no charge for admission. The photo competition is open to nature photographers of all ages. The five entry categories include: Scenery; Botanical/Plants; Wildlife; Butterflies, moths, insects, arachnids/spiders; and Youth (up to age 18). Some of the entry requirements include: ▸▸ Prepare up to five 8”x10” photos per entry, each mounted on matte boards cut no larger than 11”x14”. ▸▸ Contestants must furnish digital files of their entries in jpg format and not more than 4,000 pixels on the longest side. ▸▸ All photos must be taken within the boundaries of the Long Key Natural Area and Nature Center. ▸▸ Each contestant must have taken the images submitted and have all rights to its/their distribution and use. ▸▸ Standard digital optimization techniques such as removal of noise/dust, cropping, minor adjustment to color temperature and contrast, saturation, straightening,
and sharpening are allowed. ▸▸ The entry donation fee is $15 per adult and $10 per youth (18 and under). Winners will be announced at the opening of the FOLK Photo Contest exhibit on March 19, from 2pm-5pm, at the Long Key Nature Center. Award categories include: Best in Show ($150), 1st place in each of the four categories and one Youth winner ($75), 2nd place in each of the four categories and one Youth runner-up ($50). In addition to the eleven FOLK awards, there will be a “People’s Choice” cash award given to the photographer whose entry gets the most $1 “votes” from the crowd attending the award event. The total amount collected will be split 50-50 between the top vote-getter and FOLK, Inc. On February 18, at 9:30am, there will be a free photography and nature walk led by a park naturalist and accompanied by a photographer who will offer photo tips and instruction, while seeing areas of the park that are not yet open to the general public. For information about the contest, rules, and entry forms, visit www.FriendsofLongKey.com/contest.
Learn about Davie’s Pioneers at the Old Davie School Historical Museum BY DEBBY TEICH
I
f you have ever wondered how Davie’s pioneers lived without all of today’s modern conveniences, visit the Old Davie School Historical Museum. During the Orange Blossom Festival, volunteers will give visitors a taste of what life was like in the early 1900’s. Reenactments will be held on February 25 and 26, from 12noon to 2pm. Volunteers in pioneer attire will take visitors on a tour of a reconstructed 1909 one-room pioneer house, so they can see how Florida pioneers lived before electricity and indoor plumbing. Visitors can also sample food cooked over the fire, such as pineapple upside down cake, coffee, green beans and soup. During the Festival, free guided tours of the Old Davie School Historical Museum will also be available each day at 12noon and 1:30pm. The museum tells the story of how the community of Davie grew from the reclaimed land of the Everglades into the booming town it is today. Visitors can also explore a replica 1920’s classroom, showing how the Davie School has long played an important role in the community. There is also a Flea Market, from 10am – 2pm each day. “Just over a hundred years ago, there was land as far as the eye could see,” said Leslie Schroeder, Director of the Old Davie School Historical Musuem. “The completely renovated museum tells the story of how the Everglades were drained, the land was sold to entrepreneurial pioneers, and the town and old school were developed. It includes the trials and tribulations the pioneers endured from alligators and mosquitoes to hurricanes and floods. It’s a fascinating story of commitment, dedication and perseverance.”

As part of the Broward 100 Mural Project, the Old Davie School was chosen as one of nine spots around the county to receive a mural, which is on the north wall of the old school café. Andrew Reid spent many months researching the history of the school and the town and designed a mural that tells the complete story in a beautiful artistic way. At the end of each tour, the children sit in front of the mural and point out all the details they just learned. “It is a wonderful addition to our campus and a perfect way to wrap up the school tours,” said Education Director Kim Weismantle. The Museum is putting the finishing touches on the Agricultural and Citrus Packing House Exhibit, which will become a part of the Step-Back-in-Time interactive educational program that demonstrates the life of Davie pioneers to the thousands of students and museumgoers that frequent the historical campus each year. It is scheduled to open Fall 2017. The Old Davie School Historical Museum is located at 6650 Griffin Road on the south side of Griffin Road. To reach it from the Orange Blossom Festival, use the footbridge to cross the canal. For information, visit www.olddavieschool.org.

Krama Yoga Institute Opens in Weston – Get One Month of Unlimited Yoga Free FEATURE STORY
BY DEBBY TEICH
K
rama Yoga Institute leaves clients with a healthy body and a quiet mind. It offers over 10 different styles of yoga, tailored to all levels, which are taught by experienced instructors – seven days a week. For the past two years, residents in the Davie area have been experiencing the benefits of authentic yoga at the Institute. Last month, Krama Yoga Institute opened its newest location in Weston, 1334 SW 160th Aveune. Edgar Perea, president, answered some commonly asked questions about Krama Yoga Institute.
Why did you open in Weston? For two
years, we brought authentic yoga to the Davie community and built a special place that many people call home. We heard that that Weston needed something similar, so we decided to bring the same vibes and energy to the Weston community. We are confident that our state-of-the-art studio and experienced instructors will create the perfect space for your yoga practice from the moment you enter the studio until you say “Namaste.”
How many styles of yoga do you offer?
Describe the Weston facility. The Weston
facility is similar to the one in Davie. It has two large yoga rooms, so we can offer more than one yoga style at a time. For example, the Kids Yoga classes are designed to start and finish at the same time as a regular adult class. This allows the parent to practice in one room, while the child practices in the other. The facility has a spacious lobby, boutique, lots of room for cubbies and props, and plenty of parking. To create more space, the infrared heat lamps are on the ceiling instead of the floor, but not all classes are heated. The Weston location has multiple showers in the men’s and women’s bathrooms.
Describe the atmosphere. Krama Yoga
Institute’s state-of-the-art studio is not your typical one-room yoga studio. As you arrive, you will be greeted by warm and welcoming staff members in our comfortable and zen-inspiring lobby, which has been designed to accommodate early arrivals to class or

ore than 1,000 community members, including corporate teams, student organizations, individual walkers, runners, and their furry friends will take steps this month to raise awareness about domestic violence and to raise funds for programs and services that Women In Distress of Broward County, Inc. offers free of charge to victims of domestic violence in our community. This year’s goal is to raise $150,000, which can provide 1,500 nights of safe shelter for adults and children affected by domestic violence. Presented by Ultimate Software, the 18th Annual Women In Distress SAFEWALK-RUN 5K, will be held on February 25, at Nova Southeastern University in Davie. Registration is now open. Women In Distress is the only nationally accredited, state-certified, full service domestic violence center serving Broward County. Its mission is to stop domestic violence abuse for everyone through intervention, education and advocacy. It offers a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter program, individual counseling, support groups and professional trainings which are aimed at educating the community on domestic violence. Seventy percent of domestic violence victims report not leaving an abuser due to fear of what will happen to the family pet, so they often stay. Dog registration fees go toward providing services for pets of domestic violence victims to alleviate a barrier to leaving. The fun event will kick off with a warm up, followed by timed race for runners and a more leisurely stroll for walkers, strollers and dogs (on leash) at 9am. Top

SECTION&HEAD HEALTH WELLNESS
Functional Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement
Boosting Glutathione May Help Reduce Aging BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE
T
he term “preventative” refers to the art of stopping something from happening. In the case of preventative medicine, it’s all about preventing situations and conditions that can harm your health and wellbeing. This is precisely the purpose behind the Functional Medicine approach, which focuses on the underlying causes of disease by engaging the patient early on, rather than focusing on treating a disease when it’s already full-blown. Almost everyone has heard that one way you can prevent disease is to include antioxidants in your diet, but few people understand why. Antioxidants are critical in preventing cell damage, as they help detoxify the body and combat tissue damage caused by free radicals. As cells continue to experience damage throughout the years, due to oxidation, or exposure to toxins, they eventually die. So, think of cell damage and toxins as the underlying cause of aging. In fact, scientists believe the decline of these detoxification pathways is incidentally linked to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, which are some of three primary causes of human mortality. Recent research from a team at Oregon State University has found one antioxidant with antidotal properties, glutathione, to be particularly helpful for detoxification. The study found cells in younger animals could maintain higher levels of glutathione and were more resistant to toxins than cells of older animals. What’s interesting is that cells in older animals were quickly depleted of glutathione and died twice as fast when exposed to a toxic compound. This proves that as we age, the body slows down production of glutathione, opening the door for a wide range of agerelated health issues. But what’s important about this study is that scientists were able to boost levels of glutathione and offset cell damage of older cells when they incorporated NAC, a compound that is currently used to treat medical emergencies involving patients with poisonous levels of heavy metals or Tylenol overdose. Study authors concluded the combination of oral NAC and intravenous glutathione has great potential for reducing toxicity in the body. Preventing disease and obtaining optimum health by replacing key nutrients, vitamins, and hormones is an important component of what we do at a Functional Medicine practice. Now that you understand maintaining adequate levels of glutathione can help slow down the aging process and prevent disease, you probably want to know where you stand. Taking over-the-counter supplements without professional advice is not always the best option. At Bellissimo, however, we can help. We offer specialized testing to show which antioxidants and vitamins you might be lacking—glutathione included— and exactly how much of each your body needs to absorb in order to reach ideal levels. Schedule your free consultation at 954-384-8989. Dr. Jean-Claude Nerette practices Functional Medicine and is Board Certified in both Internal Medicine and Anti-Aging & Regenerative Medicine and Stephanie Muniz Nerette is a Board Certified Nurse Practitioner and a Diplomate to the Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. Clients can choose a 23-day program or a 46-day program. Women typically lose 15 lbs. in the 23-day program and up to 30 lbs. in the 46-day program. Men typically lose more - 20 to 25 lbs. in 23 days and 40 to 50 lbs. in 46 days.
Do clients keep the weight off? Ninety per-
cent of Slender Fit U clients keep the weight off. After completing the program successfully, they support and rebalance their metabolisms. In addition to losing unwanted abnormal fat, they modify their relationship with food and eating, resulting in easily maintained, long-term weight loss.
medical doctor before starting the program, as well as one-on-one counseling throughout the program. This is included in the price.
Does the diet involve exercise? Exercise is
not required and does not improve your end result. It is a scientific program and it is the combination of the HCG and the low calorie diet that produces the weight/fat loss. However, exercise is allowed.
What is HCG? HCG (Human Chronic
Gonadotropin) is a complex amino-peptide protein that exists in men and women. During pregnancy, it is produced in very high levels and almost completely controls the metabolic function. In non-pregnant individuals, research suggests HCG similarly increases the metabolism.
Does the HCG have side effects? There are
no side effects reported while using HCG for weight loss. The amount of HCG used in the diet protocol is a very tiny dose. Because it is a natural substance, this program is completely safe.
What foods are on the diet? There are no
packaged meals. You are eating real food from the grocery store that includes proteins, fruit and vegetables. This makes for an easy transition onto stabilization and then back to regular life.
Are clients hungry on the diet? Most people experience

What makes the diet so effective? Unlike
other “diets,” this program reshapes and resculpts the body by releasing abnormal fat deposits. Every pound you lose is a pound of FAT, which is very different from losing a pound of weight. no hunger on the Slender Fit U program. They are getting anywhere from 1,500 to 3,000 calories from their stored fat, depending on how much fat they have. They even find very tiny servings to be completely satisfying. Slender Fit U clients usually feel as though they are stuffing themselves in order to reach that 800 calorie limit!
Consultations are free and by appointment. For information and to see more before and after photos, visit www. SlenderFitU.com or call 954-423-1376. She says the staff was very helpful and encouraging. “They were supportive every step of the way,” said Rosa. “Every time I visited the office they were more than happy to answer any questions I had and made me feel as if I were part of the team.” After seeing Rosa’s results, her fiancé also did the program and lost 22 pounds. Rosa has also recommended the program to many family members and friends.

Sushi Tom
1396 SW 160th Avenue, Weston 954-385-3688 $$ Sushi Tom has been serving the highest quality sushi in Weston since 2009. It specializes in authentic Japanese cuisine featuring teriyaki, tempura and an extensive menu of fresh sushi and sashimi, at reasonable prices. There is even an all-you-can-eat sushi menu. Sushi Tom offers dine-in, take-out and delivery.
Sushiato
4483 Weston Road, Weston 754-223-7923 $$ The concept behind Sushiato, the art of sushi; is different from what we know as Sushi restaurants, because Sushiato presents Sushi with a “Latin Fusion” exotic and tropical flavors mixed with original Japanese cuisine and recipes. Their owners came from Venezuela with this idea and Weston received them open arms sharing the dream of this new concept. Weston is a clear example of what a great fusion gives a city: diverse nationalities, cultures, styles, accents and flavors that melt to create a new identity.

ASK THE EXPERT
BY DR. MARIA GROSMAN
W
hat does your personal oral care have to do with your newborn? It affects more than you think! Unaware of its importance, many women avoid regular dental care during and immediately after pregnancy. In addition, uneducated dentists may not stress its importance and may even be less willing to provide certain services during pregnancy. This is very unfortunate for there are definite implications of poor oral health in pregnant women, their pregnancies, as well as their children. Multiple studies have shown links between periodontal disease (infection of the gums and bones supporting the teeth) and adverse outcomes in pregnancy, including preterm deliveries, low birth weight babies, and preeclampsia. Children born to mothers with poor oral hygiene and high levels of certain oral bacteria have a significantly higher risk of developing cavities at an early age. This may be one of the causative factors in a child’s development of a condition called early childhood caries or ECC. ECC is a complicated situation in which cavities occur rampantly at an age in which needed care may be difficult to deliver. Fortunately, most of the causes of both cavities and ECC are preventable. Cavities are caused in large part by having high levels of certain oral bacteria. Although children are not born with these cavity causing bacteria, they are eventually transferred by caregivers to children. This can occur, for example, by blowing on a hot spoon of cereal. It is not natural, or possible, to forever eliminate these bacteria. However, the longer it takes to transfer, the decreased risk of cavities in general and ECC specifically. The way of accomplishing this would be to eliminate cavities in the mouths of mothers (and all caregivers for that matter) and reduce the amount of plaque through regular dental checkups, cleaning and application of topical fluoride (in toothpaste and rinse). It would be easiest to complete all dental work prior to pregnancy. However, it is important to keep in mind that most dental procedures can be accomplished during pregnancy. The safest and most comfortable time to accomplish dental work during pregnancy is the second trimester. We recommend using this time not only to receive services, but also to obtain tips for oral care for mother and baby. There are many special circumstances during pregnancy. For example, nausea and vomiting can create some difficulty in controlling the acid levels in the mouth, which can increase the risks of both enamel erosion as well as cavities in mother. You would be surprised at the creative strategies which can be used to overcome many of these challenges. Drs. Maria and Alon Grosman are Board Certified Pediatric Dentist and Orthodontist. Their office is located at 4401 S Flamingo Rd on the NW corner of Griffin and Flamingo Rd. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 954-236-3434.

LEGALLY SPEAKING
The Difficult Problem of Relocation BY EVAN BARON
A
nyone involved in family law, whether it be an attorney, mediator or even a judge, will agree that relocation cases are often the most difficult and challenging. Let me first explain the concept of relocation. A relocation occurs when one parent is seeking permission to relocate with a minor child more than 50 miles from their home. This generally occurs post judgment, meaning after the parties have already been divorced; although it could be an element that is addressed during the dissolution itself. It is not the parent’s relocation that becomes an issue, but rather the minor child’s. Several years ago, the Florida Legislature passed a relocation statute, which dictates how these matters must proceed. A parent who was or is married to the other parent (paternity cases are not always the same) must receive either written permission from the other parent or a court order allowing the relocation to occur. Assuming there is no agreement between the parents, Florida Statutes require the “relocating parent” to file a Petition to Relocate. If a timesharing schedule has already been established by the court, a request to modify the time-sharing schedule must also be included. The Petition must be served upon the other parent, who will have twenty days to respond. The petition must include the following language: A response to the supplemental petition objecting to relocation must be made in writing, filed with the court, and served on the parent or other person seeking to relocate within 20 days after service of this supplemental petition to relocate. If you fail to timely object to the relocation the relocation will be allowed, unless it is not in the best interests of the child, without further notice and without a hearing. The Petition must include the following: ▸▸ A description of the location of the intended new residence, including the state, city and specific address if known ▸▸ The home telephone number of the intended new residence ▸▸ The date of the intended move ▸▸ A detailed statement of the specific reasons for the proposed relocation. If it is based upon a job offer which has been reduced to writing, it must be attached. ▸▸ A proposal for the modified time sharing schedule In deciding whether to grant the relocation, the Court must consider: ▸▸ The relationship between the minor child and the nonrelocating parent ▸▸ The age and developmental stage of the child and the likely impact a relocation will have on that child ▸▸ The feasibility of preserving the relationship between the child and the nonrelocating parent ▸▸ The child’s preference, taking into consideration the age and maturity of the child ▸▸ Whether the relocation will enhance the general quality of life for the child and the parent seeking relocation ▸▸ The reasons the nonrelocating parent is in fact objecting ▸▸ The current economic and employment circumstances of each parent ▸▸ Whether the relocation is being sought in good faith ▸▸ Any other factor affecting the best interests of the child As you can see, this is a complicated issue. It would be best for both parties to seek legal counsel before considering such a move. The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.

REAL ESTATE

y clients have been contacting me to inquire as to where housing prices may be headed and question their current homes that they have lived in for more than five years. I encourage those who are looking to buy or sell within the next year to allow me to do a market analysis as soon as possible, while we are still in a Seller’s market. A homeowner who purchases and closes on a $250,000 home will acquire equity over a five-year period of over $43,000. This figure does not even take into account their monthly principal mortgage payments. In many cases, home equity is one of the largest portions of a family’s overall net worth. For those families who have no college payment plan in place, the equity may be borrowed against for those types of emergencies. For most, this equity is used for the next home investment. Homeownership is still the safest place to keep your money – especially in light of the volatility of the stock market and world politics and economies. According to the National Association of Realtors, the supply of homes for sale dramatically increases every spring. As an example, here is what happened to housing inventory at the beginning of 2016. Buyers in the market during the winter months are truly motivated purchasers. They want to buy now. With limited inventory currently available in most markets, sellers are in a great position to negotiate. In our area, buyers want to take advantage of the summer months to get settled, enjoy their new pools and get their children registered for school. Currently, our lack of inventory drives up the prices; however, experts predict the housing market may soon favor buyers. The median home value in the U.S. is now $191,200, up 6.2 percent since last October, according to Zillow’s October Real Estate Market Report. ▸▸ Home values rose 6.2 percent over the past year to a Zillow Home Value Index (ZHVI) of $191,200 in October. ▸▸ Rents rose 1.4 percent over the past year to a Zillow Rent Index (ZRI) of $1,402. ▸▸ T here are 6 percent fewer homes for sale than a year ago. Within two years, most experts surveyed predict the housing market will shift from the current seller’s market to a buyer’s market. However, home values will appreciate by 4.0% over the course of 2017, 3.2% in 2018 and 3.0% the next three years. That means the average annual appreciation will be 3.24% over the next 5 years. As home values appreciate, interest rates will increase. Once you sell your home, you will be investing in your new home, because renting does not make sense. Your monthly housing cost is directly tied to the price of the home you will purchase and the interest rate you secure for your mortgage. Over the last 30 years, interest rates have fluctuated greatly with rates in the double digits in the 1980s, all the way down to the near 4%. I am encouraging my clients to act now before rates go up so greatly that it affects their buying power. Zona Horton has been successfully selling Real Estate in South Florida for over 30 years. ost of us have been touched in our lives by someone struggling with mental health illness or substance abuse issues. The deep personal pain of watching helplessly as our closest family members and friends spiral out of control is devastating. The fact is that nearly one in six young Americans will struggle with mental illness in their lifetime. As I often say, these are people with problems, not problem people. These illnesses and/or addictions are a disease, not an indication of someone’s worth in our society. In fact, Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill both suffered from what is now today called clinical depression. Sadly, those suffering – often silently – can find themselves on the wrong side of the law. Too frequently, the criminal justice system treated these individuals as criminals and locked them in jail – often for relatively minor offenses. My experience has shown that arresting a person with mental health issues does not address the problem. Instead, it adds to the problems the individual is already facing. Mental illness is not a crime, and incarceration – the most expensive social service option – is the least effective solution. At the Broward Sheriff’s Office, addressing this issue is paramount, and diverting certain non-violent individuals into treatment (instead of incarceration) is our key objective. Already, we made great strides in tackling this public safety concern through proactive community policing, including increasing the number of deputies with Crisis Intervention Training (CIT). CIT provides a non-violent solution focused upon de-escalating and assisting, not arresting. Recently, the community received a massive boost to the tune of a nearly $22 million grant from the Florida Department of Children and Families to establish a comprehensive system of behavioral health care via a new, specialized Centralized Receiving Facility. In partnership with Henderson Behavioral Health and other behavioral health providers, the facility will provide law enforcement officials with a one-stop assessment center for individuals they encounter exhibiting signs of mental illness or experiencing a crisis that requires mental health evaluation, intervention, and treatment. It will assist in determining if certain individuals can be successfully diverted from arrest, incarceration and criminal prosecution. Staffed 24/7/365 by human services professionals specializing in security, mental health, substance abuse, homeless services and case management, the center will focus on properly assessing individuals and linking them with appropriate, proven community providers for the help they need. BSO will remain in direct contact with these individuals and chart their progress through a continuum of care. We hope to deploy several centers strategically throughout the county in the coming months. It’s a win-win for both those struggling with mental illness and the community as a whole. The center will help increase behavioral health programming and services to at-risk individuals in a community setting – not behind bars. It will also have the added benefit of driving down the rearrest rate – leading to increased public safety gains – while reducing our jail population, where taxpayers shell out nearly $120 per day to keep each prisoner incarcerated. Individuals suffering from mental health illness deserve our support in helping them overcome their difficult situation – and I am excited for what this initiative will bring. For information, visit sheriff.org.

Heart Smart Lifestyle Changes: Reduce Heart Disease Risks As the number one killer in the United States, heart disease continues to pose a significant risk for all Americans. But, what if you discovered that initiating simple David Lopez, MD lifestyle changes could make a world of difference in preventing the disease? Well, it’s a fact. Overall, healthy lifestyle changes that have a positive impact on reducing the risk of heart disease include:
What can you do to improve your heart health? Know the risk factors, and be sure to talk to your doctor about the ones that apply to you. Dr. Lopez adds, “It’s never too late to evaluate your lifestyle choices, and make positive changes. Every healthy change you make can increase your quality of life, and help you live longer.”
