March Celebrates Women's Accomplishments

M

arch is Women’s History Month. It was first recognized in the United States in 1988. In a Presidential proclamation, President Ronald Reagan commented, “Women continue to strengthen the family and enrich our lives with intellectual gifts, creative talents, and indomitable spirit.” Every March since that year has been officially recognized as Women’s History Month in the United States.

For the second year in a row, we are celebrating this year’s Women’s History Month by recognizing some of the amazing women in our community. The Exceptional Women in Business section of this magazine highlights the accomplishments and talents of some of the women who make our community such a great place to live and raise a family. The contributions women have made to every field and endeavor are infinite. Accomplishments like Marie Curie’s work in physics or Rosa Parks’ bravery that ignited the civil rights movement are even more noteworthy when considering the obstacles they had to overcome. It’s heartening to see accomplished women in positions of power. People like General Motors CEO Mary Barra, Vice President Kamala Harris, Abigail Johnson of Fidelity Investments, Nobel Laureate in Physics Andrea Ghez, and Miami Marlins General Manager Kim Ng are leading in all parts of our society. As we reflect during this year’s Women’s History Month, we are excited to see the accomplishments women will make in the future! Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet OUR CITY MEDIA PUBLISHERS

Cooper City to Celebrate 63rd Founders Day

E

By Nick Jaillet

ntrepreneur Morris Cooper moved to South Florida in 1958 with the intention of living an “easy retirement.” He had recently sold the apparel company he founded and decided to enjoy the Florida lifestyle. Shortly after moving here, however, he developed other ideas. Cooper envisioned a perfectly planned community and set out to create it. That planned community, which is now Cooper City, was founded in 1959. On March 12th, members of the Cooper City community will celebrate the 63rd annual Founder’s Day. The day-long event will include activities reflective of all that Cooper City has to offer including a run/walk and parade in the morning followed by day-long events at Brian Piccolo County Park. There will be food trucks, children’s activities, performances by local musical groups, an arts and crafts show, a business expo featuring loctal Cooper City businesses, and much more. The celebration will culminate with a concert at Brian Piccolo County Park. Families are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets when they visit. Since its founding, Cooper City has grown from just 691 acres to seven square miles. The city’s population has grown from just 85 in 1959 to more than 35,000 residents today. It is consistently ranked as one of the safest cities in Florida every year and is served by some of the highest-performing public schools in Broward County.

Individuals, groups and organizations wishing to participate in the Founders Day Parade & Festivities can find more info at www. coopercityfl.org

standards for our students, most of whom graduate knowing how to read, write, tie their shoelaces, and more. In addition, in 2017 we incorporated STEM into our curriculum. STEM is a new frontier exploring Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. We include basic skills as well as age-appropriate Lego builds. This helps prepare our students for the technologically advanced world in which we live today. This year, we will also be incorporating STEM in the toddler classes as well. Is there anything else you would like readers to know? A Children’s Carousel offers a variety of schedules to help accommodate every student and parent, as well as a summer camp. It has been a privilege to serve the Weston community for so many years, and we look forward to many years to come. We invite you to come tour our school. “Dory Dillo”

t took 20 years for Margaret Cross’ dream to come to fruition, but today she can now see her name on the front cover of the book she authored. “Dory Dillo,” a children’s book about a young armadillo whose favorite place is the chemistry lab, is the first book Cross has self-published. “I always wanted to write a book a child could read and thought they might, reading about animals. Armadillos were perfect characters for me,” she said. Her early research helped her learn about the nocturnal animals, and the book weaves armadillo facts in for young learners. About four years ago, Cross decided she wasn’t getting any younger and decided it was time to pick up where she had left off. She was surprised she already had the book’s first chapter written. However, the plot needed to be further developed and an ending was needed. The COVID pandemic spurred her on when a writing group was formed at her senior living community by a fellow East Ridge neighbor and published romance writer, Linda Sankpill. The writing group provided Cross with the support she needed. “The group was very helpful,” she explained. “But while everyone was writing their version of the great American novel, no one was writing a children’s book.” The internet offered options for self-publishing, and the company Cross selected provided complimentary editing. Their suggestions guided Cross through several rewrites of “Dory Dillo.” A software program helped her select vocabulary words that would be appropriate for children. While an earlier version was geared to seventh graders, Cross simplified the manuscript for a third or fourth-grade child. According to Cross, adults seem to enjoy the book as well since the plot sets up an adventure and challenges a group of armadillos, raccoons, crows and three large dogs. “Dory Dillo” also touches on environmental concerns and redevelopment, which are important and topical issues for all ages. Before retiring, Cross spent most of her career programming mainframe computers and coding. The book swirled off and on in her brain, but the plot has no similarities to Cross’ life. While the main character, “Dory Dillo,” is a science nerd, it’s not autobiographical. Cross disliked chemistry in school. “The characters’ names just seemed to pop into her head and “Dory Dillo” just had a nice ring,” Cross said. Her next writing project is a book of children’s poetry. She’s not sure if “Dory Dillo” will have another adventure in the future as a sequel, but she says, “Never say never.” An avid traveler, Cross enjoys trips that offer education, history and cultural experiences. Her next trip is exploring Newfoundland.

VICKIE CARTWRIGHT CHOSEN TO LEAD BROWARD SCHOOLS PERMANENTLY By Terry Jaillet

B

roward County Public Schools Interim Superintendent Vickie Cartwright will get the full-time job. The former Orange County school administrator was chosen by the Broward County School Board after an 8-1 vote in her favor. Lori Alhadeff was the only dissenting vote at a School Board Meeting on February 9. Cartwright has been the interim superintendent since her predecessor, Robert Runcie resigned from the role last year. She was chosen despite initially not being allowed to even apply for the job. The interim superintendent was initially not supposed to be eligible for the full-time role, but Cartwright gained the support of board members and, importantly, The Broward Teachers Union. “In the six months that she has served as interim superintendent, she has proven to be an intelligent and excellent leader with an ability to listen to and work with all constituencies,” said Teachers Union President Anna Fusco in a prepared statement. “She quickly gained a keen understanding of the district’s challenges and opportunities. I look forward to continuing

the positive and fruitful relationship we have created and to Dr. Cartwright’s long tenure as the leader of Broward County Public Schools.” The school board had narrowed the search to two finalists. Along with Cartwright was retired Air Force Colonel Michael Gaal. Gaal has held a number of leadership positions in large schools systems after his military service. He was never a teacher, however. Some board members pointed to this fact as a reason to prefer Cartwright. “The beginning of my career is one that is truly based on relationships and the value of understanding the importance in ensuring that we put students first,” Cartwright told the board. “During my 7th-grade year, unfortunately, my family did become homeless.” “I am humbled. I am honored,” Cartwright said after the vote, “One of my initial interests at this point is really going out and recruiting the best-qualified candidates for those (key) positions.” Alhadeff explained the reasoning for her vote for Gaal, saying, “he was the stronger leader

in totality, as far as being able to question the status quo, hold people accountable.” Cartwright will have her work cut out for in managing the nation’s sixth-largest school system. There are currently vacancies in several key management positions.

mbracing yoga and its benefits. Yoga has become an essential part of our curriculum and it is being incorporated more and more into public and private schools since it has been discovered that children can benefit greatly from its practice. Yoga helps children develop body awareness and have a handle on stress levels as we teach them to meditate, control their breathing and learn healthy body movements. Research has shown that children that practice yoga on a weekly basis build stronger concentration skills as well. It also helps with developing a positive self-image and more confidence in themselves. In the classroom, both teachers and children benefit from their yoga practice skills. Yoga helps educators by offering an alternative to handle challenges and allows for the integration of healthy activity while releasing tensions through specific movements. The plank pose helps promote more flexibility and core power in the student body, as well as, helps release body tension.

Self-regulation is essential for children as they begin to deal with different challenges in the classroom and away. Self-regulation is “the ability to flexibly activate, monitor, inhibit, persevere, and adapt one’s behavior, attention, emotions, and cognitive strategies in response to internal cues, environmental factors, and feedback from others” (Bergen-Cico, et al., 2015, p. 3448). A Child’s Pose is also a great pose for children to learn to feel their belly expanding as they are breathing in and out with the teacher’s instruction. Luckily, practicing yoga is something you can take anywhere. Teachers, parents, as well as caregivers, can benefit greatly from its benefits when they are at home, school, and even during travels and vacations. All it takes is a cozy corner and set intentions to spend the next few minutes or an hour if you would like, embracing each move, each breath, and the benefits it brings as you enjoy the time with your students or child. Namaste.

Derek Gordon Named Assistant Principal of the Year By Terry Jaillet

estern High School Assistant Principal Derek Gordon was named Assistant Principal of the year by Broward County Public Schools (BCPS). He joined Principal of the Year, Heilange Porcena from North Side Elementary School, Assistant Principal of the Year, Eagle Ridge Elementary School Teacher Seema Naik and SchoolRelated Employee of the Year, Kimberly Kummler from Manatee Elementary School in receiving honors at BCPS’s annual Caliber Awards. Each Year, BCPS recognizes the very best teachers, administrators, and employees at its Caliber Awards. The school district is the largest employer in the county, employing more than 34,000 people, making the recognition truly an honor. Derek Gordon, Assistant Principal of the Year Assistant Principal of the year, Derek Gordon is one of only two assistant principals in BCPS who started his career as a visual arts teacher. A strong believer in personalizing the learning experience, Gordon’s educational philosophy includes a partnership with his students. Overseeing the Exceptional Student Education Department at Western High School, he ensures that his most vulnerable students are learning and succeeding. “The next generation needs to have the ability to adapt to new situations and master new tools and technologies quickly.”

Seema Naik, Teacher of the Year Teacher of the year, Seema Naik started her career in education 16 years ago – first as a volunteer so she could be involved in her daughters’ education. She then applied to become a cafeteria aide and teacher assistant before becoming a primary grade teacher. “Anyone can take money from your hands, but not your education.” These powerful words spoken by Naik’s parents many years ago shaped her philosophy on education. Naik believes all children have the right to quality education to empower them with critical thinking skills, collaboration strategies and self-confidencw to reach their goals. “The next generation requires teachers to foster a desire for lifelong learning because of the current technology-dominated era,” said Naik. As part of a family of musicianyous from India, Naik uses her passion for music to enhance her instruction to create songs and chants with lyrics that incorporate lesson content for her students. “In my experience as a school leader, there are only a few teachers I would consider to be a pioneer. It is clear-cut in my mind that Mrs. Naik is a STEM pioneer in the education world,” said Eagle Ridge Elementary Principal Lindsey Sierra. “She has led Eagle Ridge in creating new STEM opportunities for our students.” Heilange Porcena, Principal of the Year Heilange, a 26-year veteran at BCPS, commented, “We have the power to change a life.” Born in Haiti, Porcena migrated to the United States at the age of six, unable to speak English. did not deter her from fulfilling her dreams and aspirations. Through her leadership in education, Porcena enjoys the privilege of being able to give back to her community and show that dreams do become reality. “Ms. Porcena passionately pursues excellence to ensure the academic and social emotional needs for each one of her scholars,” said her director Jacquelyn Haywood. “She inspires her staff, serves as a mentor, and encourages teachers and students to become leaders.” Kimberly Kummler, School-Related Employee of the Year “Children are like snowflakes, each one unique in their own way of learning,” said Kimberly Kummler, school nurse at Manatee Bay Elementary School for the last four years. Kummler embraces uniqueness and focuses on their individual strengths when educating the next generation. Knowing the importance of mental health in the growth and development of students, she is humbled to work with students to provide the best learning opportunity for each student. “Nurse Kim quickly earned a reputation of being extremely flexible, caring and fun, but also very thorough,” said Manatee Bay Elementary Principal Heather Hedman-DeVaughn. “When COVID-19 presented itself, she rose to a new level of support and was extremely knowledgeable.”

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT

Hey KIDO, Let’s Play! By Beverly Perkins

A

lmost three decades ago, Kidokinetics was created by Weston resident Terri Braun to get children of all ages engaged in fun activities and to keep their bodies moving. The teacher, athlete, wife, and mother of three had an intense passion at a very early age to teach kids to become competent at all sports while learning to be physically fit. The physical education sports and fitness program has traveled to schools, early childhood and daycare centers, houses of worship, homeschool groups, community centers, and parks. Just last month, Braun was thrilled to announce the grand opening of their new headquarters facility in Davie. The Kidokinetics’ brand has become so successful that it attracted the interest of Franchise CEO Dave Pazgan and other franchise leaders who also wish to support its mission to empower and educate kids through physical activity. Minority investments from the Co-Founders of College HUNKS Hauling Junk aim to help the emerging franchise brand establish itself as a leader in sports and physical education enrichment programs while creating nationwide franchise opportunities. “Our new state-of-the-art headquarters gives us a great location to train our new franchisees. Now more than ever, kids need physical education enrichment programs to support their overall development as well as mental and physical wellness," explained Braun. " There is such a powerful need for a program like this and that’s what makes it easier to franchise, we are mission-driven. We are so grateful to have the support from franchise executives at College TERRI BRAUN

Kidokinetics Founder

HUNKS. This will help us expand our franchise program to reach way more children across the country and beyond.” Even during a pandemic, Braun found the demand larger than ever. In a time with video games and smartphones, kids have become rather sedentary, and parents have found it challenging to limit screen time and get their children excited to be active. Kidokinetics offers a solution to get these kids moving again in a fun yet structured environment. Physical activity is of utmost importance in the era we all are living in. The sports and physical education brand operates 19 franchises nationwide and hopes to add another 100 in the next two years. With a focus on developing successful franchise owners and providing much-needed benefits to youth physical activity enrichment, Kidokinetics is well-positioned to continue growing exponentially. Terri Braun, Kidokinetics Founder recently took the time to answer some commonly asked questions about herself and her sports program.

How did Kidokinetics come about?

My background of teaching kids from an early age allowed me to see the need for a program that was non-competitive and introduces all sports. Children essentially never did and some still do not have somewhere they can be physically active learning sports and not worry about teams and competition, just be active. We, as adults go to the gym and work out as a stress release, and kids do not have that. I was training, teaching, and competing in karate from a young age and knew not every child would want to do karate and that’s what lead me to develop a program where kids can learn different sports and still focus on coordination, concentration, discipline and get so much out of what they are doing. I want them to build their confidence and empower them to believe they can do anything.

What are the core values of Kidokinetics?

We like to PLAY! (Pass the ball, Leadership on levels, Attitude of gratitude, and Yes, you can!) If you aren’t having fun, you are not doing it right.

What is your vision for your company? My vision is to build this company into a large franchise system with 100 units and get 1 million kids moving.

Please share your views on franchising an industry such as yours.

Franchising is the best way to grow our program while also allowing us to keep to brand guidelines and make sure the program is being replicated appropriately.

Tell us more about your new headquarters.

We've created a great facility with office space, a meeting area, and a training area for our franchisees. We also have an indoor pickleball court! Yes, a pickleball court is a unique element of the office where the Kidokinetics team can take an activity break and have fun while working. Our entire corporate culture is about creating fun physical activity programs for children, so why not add some fun activity to our workdays, too? The court is also available to rent for private games.

As a female business owner, what is your advice to other aspiring businesswomen?

Its sounds so cliché to say never give up if you have a dream because you can achieve it; But you must work hard to get it. Nothing is handed to you and if you have no money and an idea run with it because you can make anything possible if you have passion, loyalty, resilience, and a great work ethic. Do not ever let anyone tell you, you are not good enough. It will happen but that should make you stand taller and stronger.

Is there anything else you would like to share with our readers?

We recently enjoyed our grand opening celebration last month and we invite anyone interested to come tour our facility and learn more.

Kidokinetics Headquarters is located at 10428 West State Road 84, Unit 1, Davie, 33324. For more information about the Kidokinetics program or franchising, visit www.Kidokinetics.com, call 954-385-8511, or email terri@kidokinetics.com.

ASK THE EXPERT

RUNNERS- LISTEN TO YOUR BODY! By Dr. Michael M. Cohen, DPM, FACFAS

I

njuries often have a prodromal period. That means a part (or parts) of your body will send you signals that things aren't quite right. Your sore foot, Achilles, hamstrings, or shins may not necessarily become quickly evident at first. You may notice it in the morning when you arise or at the beginning of your run, but it fades and disappears as you continue. Granted there is a distinction between ‘good pains’ and ‘bad pains’. For instance, delayed onset muscle soreness is a good type of pain that is proportional to the intensity of training. The deep muscle pain appears within a day or two of your longer runs and wanes with light exercise and anti-inflammatories. Bad types of pain present differently. They are almost always there whether running or not and should not be run through. This type of pain may be accompanied by certain visual changes such as swelling, redness, or painful lumps, auditory changes such as pops, grinding or snapping, or sudden weakness of the ankle or foot. These acute signals may need the evaluation of the sports physician. Heed the warning signals carefully as a failure to do so may cause benign problems to develop into a frank injury, ultimately ruining your ability to enjoy healthy workouts and race. Attempts to push the envelope too far in an effort to prepare for an event often results in injury that can ruin the entire racing season. I have seen too many runners suffering from torn fascia, tendons, and fractures because of exuberant training techniques. Some of this may be self-inflicted by the athletes themselves, their enthusiastic coaches, or parents relying too much on the internet for information and treatment. Too many injuries are sustained by runners trying to cram in more miles and speedwork right before a race. Unlike a final exam, you can’t cram for a race or event. Your body is not conditioned to withstand a sudden increase in volume or intensity without breaking down. Follow the time tested 10% rule by increasing your total running mileage by 10% a week. This will allow your bones, muscles, and joints to adapt safely. Warm-up by walking at least 1/4 mile before stretching. Attend early signals (prodromes) by adjusting your speed and mileage accordingly. Alter your running form, as in the case of a sore Achilles or hamstring by shortening your stride, staying away from inclines and hills, and learning to roll over the ankle rather than emphasizing the push-off. Try to land in the 34 / Our City Davie / March 2022 / OurCityMedia.com

middle of the foot rather than running on your toes. Check to make sure your running gear is appropriate for you. Your running shoe should be appropriate for the distance, and type of foot you have. Running shoes should be discarded after 400 miles of running or walking, especially in Florida where the EVA (the white stuff in the outsole of the running shoe) collapses quickly in the summer heat. EVA is constructed from blown rubber which provides cushioning during the run. After a run, the air cells in the rubber collapse and require 24-48 hours to re-expand. So, consider purchasing two pairs of the same shoe and alternate daily to allow for maximum shock absorption. Try to stay away from flats (light flexible racing shoes) during the prodrome period or when recovering from an injury. Make sure to ice after running and use anti-inflammatories judiciously, you do not want to mask important signals. When feeling the prodrome skip a day or two of running, or better yet alternate every other day with cross-training instead. You’ll find that sports-specific cross-training will improve your running technique. This may include stretching your calves and hamstrings, aqua-jogging, and strength training. Do your best to avoid running back-to-back ‘hard’ days, especially if you are over forty. Rest is an extremely important part of training; it’s virtually impossible to improve without a proper recovery. When resuming your runs after injury or a period of convalescence make sure to return cautiously. Be patient, don't let feelings of guilt send you back to the war zone before you've recovered. Remember that training and recovery are Siamese twins who cannot exist without each other.

In 1997 he placed third place overall in the Florida Gatorade duathlon series. He is a Board-Certified Foot and Ankle Surgeon and Diplomate of the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery. MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR

DAVIE UPDATE By Mayor Judy Paul

I

presented the State of the Town message at the February Davie/Cooper City Chamber of Commerce meeting. I announced that we are financially secure and have been busy with the redevelopment of the Davie Rd. Corridor. Planned open space has been funded and will begin to take shape this year, including, but not limited to, the Davie Farm Park and the new Davie Town Hall. Yes, it’s finally happening. We are moving! The new Town Hall aligns with the town's investment in the redevelopment of the Downtown Davie Road corridor, including mixed-use projects and rehabilitating the roadway infrastructure. In addition, this new facility intends to promote downtown development and the town's values of leadership, excellence, respect, customer-driven and integrity. I have a lot of fond memories at the existing Town Hall – the history, the bonds developed, the people served, the events held and the memories made. However, Davie is growing

and while we embrace our roots, we must be proactive and responsive to the community's needs. While I will miss Town Hall -- the place where I was first sworn in as Councilmember and later as your Mayor -- I look forward to overseeing the ribbon-cutting of a new Town Hall. So, what does this mean for Town Hall operations? For the next three years, Town Hall operations, including utility bill drop-off, permitting and other services offered at the existing site will relocate to the temporary area at Pine Island Park. Once all services are relocated, the existing buildings will be

demolished and groundbreaking will occur later this year. The new Town Hall is anticipated to be completed in 2024 and will be reconstructed on the existing site. The Davie Jazz Festival will be held on April 30 which is International Jazz Day. It will feature the Women of Jazz and be held at Long Key Nature Center. For information go to Congratulations! LEGALLY SPEAKING

Do I Need a Trust? By Bruce Iden, Esquire

S

hould I create a trust even though I don’t have a multi-million dollar estate? My answer: It depends. Often estate planning goals can be achieved without establishing a revocable living trust, but there are instances when one is recommended. It all depends on your family situation and what you want to accomplish. I often use stories such as the following to help new clients better understand the benefits of having a trust. George and Jenny have been happily married for 25 years with three children, Jessica, age 20, Josh age 15, and Jonathan, age 12. Both George and Jenny have created wills, leaving everything to each other. After they are both gone, their wills leave it all to their children, in equal shares. Sounds like a logical plan. Or is it? Tragically, George dies suddenly, and, according to his will, all of his property transfers to Jenny. The following year, while rushing to an appointment on a rainy morning, Jenny loses control of her car and rear-ends a bus full of trial attorneys heading to the annual Ft. Lauderdale “I’ll See You in Court Convention.” Several attorneys are injured and predictably, lawsuits follow. Now what happens to Jenny’s inheritance from George? It likely all goes to creditors. What’s left to raise her children? Perhaps nothing. If George and Jenny had used a trust in their estate plan, the final outcome may have been different. While Jenny’s property would still be subject to creditor claims, her inheritance from George inside a trust would be safe for her and their children. In another sad scenario, imagine that Jenny dies first and George later remarries Susan, a woman with four adult children. What happens when George passes? His property, including what he inherited from Jenny, may go to Susan and eventually to Susan’s children. George and Jenny’s children could be completely disinherited! With a properly drawn trust, George and Jenny can rest assured that even if the surviving spouse remarries, their money will go to their children. Finally, think of George and Jenny happily enjoying retirement and grandchildren, but not fond of Jessica’s husband, Jason. Jenny fears that their son-in-law will never earn a decent living, and be dependent on their daughter Jessica to support him for the rest of his life. George worries that if they leave an inheritance to Jessica and she ultimately divorces Jason, a substantial portion of Jessica’s inheritance could be lost to her “no good husband.” If George and Jenny leave inheritances to their children in a trust, these assets will not be commingled with marital property. Therefore, in the event of a divorce, daughter Jessica’s inheritance will not be the subject of division and partial distribution to son-in-law Jason. Making the right estate planning decisions is important. Speak with a qualified estate planning attorney to see if a trust is right for your family situation. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

Bruce Iden earned his J.D. from George Washington University National Law Center and his L.L.M in taxation from the University of Miami School of Law. He has been practicing in the areas of estate planning, real estate and business law for over 30 years. Maya is a loving and energetic puppy! She loves to cuddle, chase ducks around the lake and wrestle with her brother Maui. She’s also very photogenic and always ready for her picture to be taken. You can’t miss her, she’s always so excited to meet new people and will greet you with hugs and kisses.
