he CDC recently announced that more than half of American adults have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine dose. After the “lost” year of 2020, we are all eager to get back to our “normal” lives. This is especially true with families with young children. Finding and planning summer activities can be especially challenging this year. Luckily, we’ve got you covered! Be sure to check out Our City’s Summer Camp Guide in this month’s issue. We have included a carefully curated reference of the area’s day camps, academic enrichment programs, and sporting activities with options for children of all ages. To make choosing the perfect program, or programs, even easier, we’ve designed the Summer Camp Guide to allow parents to match summer activities to their kids’ interests. When it comes to making the most out of school breaks, Our City has got you covered. But, we are also your go-to resource for children’s activities throughout the school year. Answers for back pain Miami Neuroscience Institute’s Spine Center offers comprehensive care
Y
ou bend to grab a piece of paper off the floor and a bolt of pain shoots from your back down your leg. With back and neck pain affecting 80 percent of Americans at some point in their life, it’s an all too common occurrence. But how do you know if the cause of your pain is something serious? The experts at Miami Neuroscience Institute’s Spine Center, a part of Baptist Health, suggest a comprehensive evaluation to get to the root of your problem, alleviate your pain and prevent long-term issues. Physiatrists — physical medicine and rehabilitation specialists — at the Center’s multiple locations deal with issues affecting the spinal cord, including problems with bones, joints, nerves, muscles and tendons. “We almost always isolate the issue, and with a proper diagnosis comes the proper treatment,” said Ronald Tolchin, D.O., medical director. Causes of back and neck pain include degenerative disc disease, arthritis, skeletal abnormalities, spinal stenosis, herniated discs and more. Even screen time and texting can throw the neck out of alignment. And with the COVID-19 pandemic, doctors are seeing an increase in back problems due to too much sitting, not enough exercise, weight gain and working at makeshift home offices that lack chairs with lumbar support and arm rests. 14 / Our City Davie / May 2021 / OurCityMedia.com
The Center works with everyone from athletes to the elderly, and handles extremely complex cases. For some patients, an initial assessment is followed by imaging studies — an MRI or CT scan, for example — that reveal problems such as a narrowing of the spinal column, a bone spur pressing on a nerve, bulging discs or arthritis. Nerve conduction studies are performed on-site. The good news is that medical advances have made it possible for most patients to avoid surgery. “We have a whole armamentarium of noninvasive and holistic treatments available today,” Dr. Tolchin said. The Spine Center team may recommend stretching and physical therapy, anti-inflammatory and injectable medications, weight loss with an anti-inflammatory diet and safe exercise.
Some 90 percent of back and neck problems are improved with these noninvasive approaches. For the 10 percent who require surgery, the Center’s team works closely with the neurosurgeons at Miami Neuroscience Institute. “As a comprehensive spine center, not only do we look at you holistically and provide many services in one location,” Dr. Tolchin said, “but I can literally walk down the hall to any of my neurosurgical colleagues, pull up images and discuss a patient.” Follow-up with back and neck pain patients is also important, according to Dr. Tolchin. “We don’t just treat you and say, ‘See you in five years.’ For some patients, the condition can be chronic. We’re a place where they can find salvation, and we will help them get through it.”
In addition to injections that are administered in the office, minimally invasive radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is performed at an outpatient location. RFA uses heat to disrupt the nerve tissue’s transmission of pain signals to the brain. Epidural and facet joint injections are also handled on an outpatient basis. With locations throughout Miami-Dade and Broward counties, Spine Center appointments can be made by calling 786-596-3876 or visiting BaptistHealth.net/Spine.

BCPS Gets Set to Power Up
B
with New Electric School Buses
roward County Public Schools (BCPS) is getting ready to power up with new electric school buses, thanks to a grant from the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP). Through the grant, the
District is purchasing 60 electric buses. BCPS is also partnering with Florida Power & Light Company, which will provide the charging infrastructure for the electric buses at each BCPS transportation terminal. Each electric bus is a standard
72-passenger vehicle. Unlike typical diesel buses, the electric buses produce no emissions at the tailpipe and are quiet on the road – reducing noise pollution. The quiet ride makes it more comfortable for passengers inside to have conversations. The District is now working to complete its order for the 60 new buses, with the goal of having them delivered and ready to use within the next year. Once the buses hit the road, BCPS will be operating the largest fleet of electric buses in the state. “This exciting opportunity is an example of our District’s commitment to protect the communities we drive-through and the environment as we move toward healthier and more environmentally friendly
transportation options,” said BCPS Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “We appreciate the state’s support and collaboration with this grant. Reducing our carbon footprint is a responsibility we all share. We’re excited to be taking this first step with 60 electric buses and look forward to expanding our fleet of electric buses moving forward.” The District’s Student Transportation and Fleet Services Department includes approximately 1,300 buses, with about 950 used during daily routes and the remaining buses used for school events and activities. The new electric buses will serve as replacements for older diesel school buses built-in or before 2009.

F
By Beverly Perkins
or the past 30 years, “The VCA Walk for the Animals” has been the largest fundraising event for the Humane Society of Broward County (HSBC) and although this year’s event was much different, the results were outstanding. Despite the many challenges due to COVID-19, the walk raised over $360,000 for the shelter’s animals, programs, and services. Participants walked individually or in small “packs” with family, friends, and/or co-workers to gain awareness, gather sponsorship donations, and collect other necessary items for the Society. One long-time participant who exceeded her twelve-year record was Janet McLaughlin along with her Maltese-mix pup. The Davie resident just happened to be the mom of this year’s Cover Dog, Lily. The duo (literally) went to town to do their part to raise the much-needed funds. Every walk around the neighborhood sure paid off as
they received a record-high $5,120. “I must say after doing the ‘Walk’ since 2010, this was my best year ever monetarily. My neighbors in the immediate area and a few from nearby neighborhoods, and those that had met me at the shelter were extremely generous this year with unbelievable donations that knocked my socks off which I was grateful for,” exclaimed McLaughlin. McLaughlin shared that several “super donors” like the Bryn and the Paletz families gave as much as $500 each. Additionally, Paletz Roofing donated five $100 doggie beds for the shelter’s kennels. The owners of Ameriprise Financial, Robert Love and Richard Bernstein, also met the $500 contribution. “All and all, the donors I was able to reach out to happened to be big animal lovers and extremely generous with their donation and support for the Broward County Humane
Lily McLaughlin, The 2021 VCA Walk for the Animals Cover Dog
Society. As a proud volunteer, I was able to collect and walk with my beloved ‘Cover Girl’. I thank all the wonderful folks that live in the Davie area for the support to make this donation possible,” added McLaughlin. It’s hopeful that next year’s “Walk for the Animals” will be “pawsitively” perfect with an “in-person” and “in-dog” status in downtown Fort Lauderdale in early May.

Understanding Mental-Wellness, ADHD and Nutrition Deficiencies
R
esearchers are beginning to learn how to favorably influence genes via the study of epigenetics, a gene-} altering process called methylation which is involved in 70% of serious psychiatric conditions. Several studies revealed that most mental disorders involve disturbances or imbalances of essential nutrients that alter brain function. All heritable mental illnesses were presumed to have an unavoidable genetic component and people believe their biological and psychological fate has already been predetermined and is locked in by gene mutations. Many mental disorders now appear to be epigenetic, rather than genetic. This means that gene protein making can be switched on (called gene expression) or off (called gene silencing) by environmental factors such as radiation, temperature, food or lack of food. Certain molecules within foods (vitamins, minerals, amino acids, essential oils) can do this reliably. Most severe heritable mental disturbances will be reversible once we understand how to tap into epigenetics. Moreover, present nutrient therapies have already resulted in thousands of reports of recovery in persons diagnosed with violent behavior, ADHD, autism, anxiety, depression, and schizophrenia. More than 70% of people with behavioral and mental disorders have a methylation imbalances, this chemical that dominates gene expression. About 42% of schizophrenics are over-methylated while 28% are undermethylated. More than 95% of persons diagnosed with autism, OCD, and antisocial personality disorder (e.g., convicted felons) exhibit undermethylation. The body’s methyl groups arise from methionine, one of the amino acids present in meat and other proteins. There are nutrient therapies that can normalize methylation and correct many brain chemistry 26 / Our City Davie / May 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

imbalances without resorting to drugs. Copper overload is a primary offender in many mental disturbances, including autism, paranoid schizophrenia, clinical depression, hyperactivity, learning disability, and postpartum depression. Excessive copper reduces the brain chemical dopamine and increases norepinephrine. During pregnancy, blood copper levels more than double to stimulate the development of new blood vessels as the baby grows rapidly. If copper levels do not return to normal after birth, then postpartum depression may result and antidepressant drugs usually do not help these women. Vitamin B6 is another nutrient that is associated with many mental health issues, producing symptoms of irritability, depression, poor short-term memory, insomnia, muscle weakness, difficulty walking and even psychosis. B6 is needed to produce important brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine and GABA (a relaxing brain chemical). Zinc deficiency is the most frequently observed chemical imbalance in
mental health populations. Zinc deficiency is associated with temper control problems, weak immunity, depression, poor wound healing, epilepsy, anxiety, learning problems and hormone imbalances. Another common imbalance is a chemical produced in the body called pyrrole that binds to zinc and vitamin B6 and increases their excretion in the urine. Nearly one-third of persons diagnosed with depression, behavioral disorders, autism, and psychosis have elevated pyrroles. A urine test can reveal whether a pyrrole disorder is present. This important chemical imbalance can be corrected within weeks using supplements of zinc, B-6, and augmenting nutrients. Experience with ADHD and depression patients report significant improvement within month of individualized nutrient therapy and some of them are able to wean away from psychiatric drugs without a return of symptom. Women with post-partum depression have reported significant improvement after blood copper levels were normalized.

Soccer has also been taking registrations and will be in full swing. The pickleball and tennis courts at Bamford Sports Complex are also up and running. It was great to see people in the park enjoying the weather and playing their favorite sports. Thank you to all the residents and business owners who contact me with concerns and issues that impact our community. I depend on you to be my eyes and ears and welcome all comments. In turn, I direct problems to appropriate departments and see that solutions are implemented. Many times, since multiple jurisdictions are involved, such as FDOT or the County, it may take a little longer to see results, but we are always working for you. Life Can Change in an Instant
I
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
n 2018, after a string of mass shootings, I first addressed in this column the reality that life does not always go as planned. It was after a shooting in the Delta baggage claim area at Fort Lauderdale International Airport where five people were killed. While I did not personally know any of the victims, this event and the Parkland massacre several months later were right in our own backyards. Our entire community watched in shock as horrific details were reported, and we all collectively grieved with the families who lost loved ones. Recent mass killings in Atlanta and Boulder remind us once again that life can change in the blink of an eye. What all of these tragedies and others, whether at a church in Charleston or a country music festival in Las Vegas, have in common is that left behind were devastated families, friends, and communities. People, just living their lives, had no idea their souls would be leaving this earth. We can all agree that life does not always go the way you expect. Plans put off until later, may never happen. Life events often trigger thoughts about your own mortality sooner rather than later. The reality of our COVID-19 world has motivated many to act. As an attorney specializing in wills and trusts, I see firsthand what may happen to a family after an unexpected death. During a very emotional time, a grieving family is left to clean up the legal and financial mess left behind. The majority of my estate planning practice focuses on helping clients prospectively prepare to take care of their family and assets after they are gone. I offer counsel regarding the best estate plan for their unique needs. As a caring and responsible parent or spouse, there are things you should think about and take care of. Now. Let’s start with your minor children. Have you thought about who will care for them if you are not around? What about financial support? Do you know if you have the right amount, and the right type, of life insurance for your particular family needs? What about college? How will that be paid for? Do you look after or support your parents? What will happen to them if you are not around? Now, think for a moment about what your final wishes for your family might be. How do you want to leave assets to your heirs? Are there charities you wish to support? Who will inherit your business and real estate? There are so many questions to consider. Perhaps the lesson to be learned from tragedy is to always try to live a good life full of kindness and gratitude, and to remember to love and cherish our families and friends every day. The reality is that we do not know what the future holds. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?

THE DIFFICULT ISSUE OF RELOCATION
A
AWARDED 10 YEARS
By Evan H. Baron, Esq.
nyone involved in family law, whether it be an attorney, mediator, or even a judge, will agree that relocation cases are often the most difficult and challenging. Let me first explain the concept of RELOCATION. A relocation occurs when one parent is seeking permission to relocate with a minor child more than 50 miles from their home. This generally occurs post judgment, meaning after the parties have already been divorced; although it could be an element that is addressed during the dissolution itself. It is not the parent’s relocation that becomes an issue, but rather the minor child’s. Several years ago, the Florida Legislature passed a relocation statute, which dictates how these matters must proceed. A parent who was or is married to the other parent (paternity cases are not always the same), must receive either written permission from the other parent or a court order allowing the relocation to occur. Assuming there is no agreement between the parents, Florida Statutes require the “relocating parent” to file a Petition to Relocate. If a time-sharing schedule has already been established by the court, a request to modify the time-sharing schedule must also be included. The Petition must be served upon the other parent, who will have twenty days to respond. The petition must include the following language: A RESPONSE TO THE SUPPLEMENTAL PETITION OBJECTING TO RELOCATION MUST BE MADE IN WRITING, FILED WITH THE COURT, AND SERVED ON THE PARENT OR OTHER PERSON SEEKING TO RELOCATE WITHIN 20 DAYS AFTER SERVICE OF THIS SUPPLEMENTAL PETITION TO RELOCATE. IF YOU FAIL TO TIMELY OBJECT TO THE RELOCATION, THE RELOCATION WILL BE ALLOWED, UNLESS IT IS NOT IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE CHILD, WITHOUT FURTHER NOTICE AND WITHOUT A HEARING.

954-385-9160 The hiring of a lawyer is an important decision that should not be based solely upon advertisements. Before you decide, ask us to send you free written information about our qualifications and experience.
The Petition must include the following:
• A description of the location of the intended new residence, including the state, city and specific address if known • The home telephone number of the intended new residence • The date of the intended move • A detailed statement of the specific reasons for the proposed relocation. If it is based upon a job offer which has been reduced to writing, it must be attached. • A proposal for the modified time sharing schedule.
In deciding whether to grant the relocation, the Court must consider:
• The relationship between the minor child and the nonrelocating parent • The age and developmental stage of the child and the likely impact a relocation will have on that child • The feasibility of preserving the relationship between the child and the nonrelocating parent • The child’s preference, taking into consideration the age and maturity of the child • Whether the relocation will enhance the general quality of life for the child and the parent seeking relocation • The reasons the nonrelocating parent is in fact objecting • The current economic and employment circumstances of each parent • Whether the relocation is being sought in good faith • ANY OTHER FACTOR AFFECTING THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE CHILD.
As you can see, this is a complicated issue. It would be best for both parties to seek legal counsel before considering such a move.

Listen to your body!
njuries often have a prodromal period. That means a part (or parts) of your body will send you signals that things aren’t quite right. Your sore foot, Achilles, hamstrings or shins may not necessarily become quickly evident at first. You may notice it in the morning when you arise or in the beginning of your run, but then it fades and disappears as you continue. Granted there are ‘good pains’ and ‘bad pains. For instance, delayed onset muscle soreness is a good type of pain that is proportional to the intensity of training. The deep muscle pain appears within a day or two of your long run and wanes with light exercise and anti-inflammatories. Bad types of pain present differently. They are almost always there whether running or not, and should not be run through. This type of pain may be accompanied by certain visual changes such as swelling, redness or painful lumps, auditory changes such as pops, grinding or snapping, or sudden weakness of the ankle or foot. These acute signals may need the evaluation of the sports physician. Heed the warning signals carefully as a failure to do so may cause a benign problem to develop into a frank injury, ultimately ruining your chances of enjoying healthy workouts or even racing. Such attempts by athletes to push the envelope in an effort to prepare for a certain race often results in futility, oftentimes resulting in an injury which ruins the entire racing season. I have seen too many runners suffering from torn fascia, tendons and fractures because of exuberant training techniques. Much of this is brought on by athletes, enthusiastic coaches and parents who are relying too much on the internet for information and treatment. Moreover, I have seen many injuries occur because runners try to cram in more miles and speedwork right before a race. Training cannot be treated like a final exam- you cannot cram for it and the body is not conditioned to sustain a sudden increase in volume. Follow the time tested10% rule by increasing your total running mileage by 10% a week. Attend early signals (prodromes) by adjusting your speed and mileage accordingly, alter your running form as in the case of a sore Achilles or hamstring by shortening your stride, staying away from inclines and hills and learning to roll over the ankle rather than emphasizing the push-off, especially during the early part of the run. 32 / Our City Davie / May 2021 / OurCityMedia.com

Warm up by walking at least 1/4 mile before stretching. Check to make sure your running gear is appropriate for you. Your running shoe should be appropriate for the distance, and type of foot you have. Shoes should be discarded after 400 miles of running or walking, especially in Florida where the EVA (the white stuff in the outsole of the running shoe) collapses quickly in the heat. EVA is made of a type of rubbery material which has been expanded with microscopic air cells to give you cushioning during the run. After a run the air cells collapse and it will take 24-48 hours for them to re-expand. So better yet buy two pairs of the same shoe and alternate daily to allow for maximum shock absorption. Try to stay away from flats (light racing shoes) during the prodrome period or when recovering from an injury. Make sure to ice after running and use anti-inflammatories judiciously, you do not want to mask important signals. When feeling the prodrome skip a day or two of running and cross train instead. You’ll find that with sports specific cross training your technique will actually improve. This may include aqua-jogging and strength training. Avoid training with back-to-back hard days, especially if you are over forty. When resuming your runs after injury return
to running cautiously. Be patient, don’t let feelings of guilt send you back to the war zone before you’ve recovered. Remember that training and recovery are Siamese twins who cannot exist without each other.
