When you fly now, you know it’s extra for everything — that airfare only pretends to be low.

But when a Senior Community offers luxury living for a seemingly-attractive monthly rent, you don’t expect to be Nickel-and-Dimed.

That’s why you’ll never see Nickel-and-Diming at The Palace. Here your monthly rent covers almost everything. Including all your meals, housekeeping, personal trainers, maintenance, and even Happy Hours with drinks and hors d’oeuvres.

You won’t see a long list of extra charges. At The Palace, the price is the price.

Remember when everything about flying was to make you feel special?

That’s how living at The Palace feels today. Call or visit soon to see for yourself.

June Joy: Embracing Sunshine, Pride, & Milestones

Welcome to June, the month that ushers in the vibrant South Florida summer! As the heat and humidity rise, we invite you to embrace the essence of our region. Don’t forget your sunscreen and a refreshing beverage as you venture outdoors. With our winter visitors bidding adieu, let’s relish the less crowded conditions and bask in the beauty of our community.

June 10th marks the last day of school for Broward County Schools, a significant milestone for many students. As high schools and colleges gear up for their graduation ceremonies, we celebrate the hard work and dedication of our young people. These ceremonies are not just about moving on, but also about reflecting with pride on their achievements and looking forward with anticipation to the next chapter.

In recognition of graduation and summer vacation, we celebrate some of our community’s most impressive teachers. Be sure to check out the profiles in this magazine’s special “Leaders of Learning” section!

June is not just about graduations and summer vacations; it’s also Pride Month! This is a time to reflect on the progress made in the fight for LGBTQ rights. Let’s celebrate our diversity and strive for a more inclusive world.

Fathers across the country are looking forward to June 16th. Father’s Day was conceived in 1909 by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington. Inspired by Mother’s Day, she wanted to honor her father, a Civil War veteran and single parent who raised six children. It became an official holiday in 1966 when President Lyndon B. Johnson issued the first presidential proclamation honoring fathers, designating the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day. We are so excited about all June of fers; enjoy!

Nova Middle School's “We The People” Mock Congressional Hearing Team Triumphs Again

Nova Middle School's mock congressional hearing team has been named the best in the nation for the second consecutive year. The team excelled at the "We The People" Mock Congressional Hearing National Invitational held in Washington, D.C., on May 10-11, 2024. This competition tests students' knowledge of the Constitution through discussions with scholars, professors, attorneys, and government officials.

Competing against 14 teams from eight states, the 35-student team from Nova Middle School showcased their expertise by reciting landmark Supreme Court cases and applying them to current issues. Their hard work and preparation paid off, as they earned the top honor after placing second in the state competition in February. This remarkable achievement is a testament to their dedication and knowledge.

The team learned of the achievement shortly after boarding a tour bus while exploring Washington, D.C. After hearing the words “NOVA Middle School,” the team

exploded into cheers of joy.

Sponsored by the Center for Civic Education and supported by a network of 50 state programs, the competition aims to promote understanding of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. These programs host local and state congressional hearings, impacting thousands of teachers and students nationwide.

Nova Middle School’s team demonstrated unwavering dedication, spending months

preparing for the competition. This rigorous preparation included memorizing important Supreme Court cases and understanding their application to modern issues. Their commitment was evident during a performance in May, which inspired many to pursue careers in government and law.

The team's victory highlights civic education's importance and its impact on young students, preparing them to be informed and active citizens.

Local Firefighter Inspires Youth Wins PuroClean Superhero Campaign

James Murad, a Tamarac firefighter from Davie, is being celebrated for his bravery and commitment to helping others in the PuroClean National Superhero Day Campaign. He stands out as a true hero among many impressive nominees, praised by Deputy Chief Jonathan Fraser and Fire Chief Michael Annese of Tamarac Fire Rescue. Murad’s fearless actions and quick thinking have saved lives and inspired his fellow firefighters and the whole community.

Apart from his firefighting duties, Murad spends time mentoring young people who want to become first responders. He leads the Firefighter Cadet Program, teaching essential skills to prepare cadets for the challenges of the job. Let’s learn more about Murad’s journey and why he’s the winner of the 2024 Superhero Day Campaign.

Born and raised in Davie, Murad always dreamed of helping others. After serving in the Army for four years, he felt even more strongly about serving his community. He briefly went to college but decided firefighting was his true calling.

Murad has a knack for working with young people. Before joining the Tamarac Fire Department, he taught EMT courses at a local high school. Since 2018, he has been busy both at work and at home, taking on the role of lead instructor in the cadet program and becoming a husband and father.

Two years ago, Murad revamped the cadet program to better prepare teens interested in becoming firefighters or EMTs. Under his guidance, cadets learn important skills like wearing firefighting gear, conducting search drills, and using hoses.

The cadet program also competes nationally, and this year, they participated in Coral Springs. Murad understands how to work with teenagers and believes in providing support and guidance to help them succeed.

Looking ahead, Murad wants to keep improving the cadet program and help graduates find jobs. For him, being a firefighter isn’t just a job; it’s a way of life. He values the bonds he shares with his fellow firefighters and cherishes spending time with his family.

When he’s not busy saving lives or spending time with family, Murad enjoys staying active and playing golf with friends. His dedication to service and bravery make him a true hero in the eyes of many.

PLANNING A BARBECUE IS LIKE PLANNING YOUR ESTATE

Memorial Day weekend signals the beginning of summer and backyard barbecues. Although a cookout may be casual, good planning is crucial. This is true for estate planning, too. A little planning goes a long way to prevent leaving you and your loved ones in a pickle:

The Menu - What Do You Own?

When you plan a barbecue, one of the first steps is to decide what foods to include on the menu. If you buy the burgers and hot dogs but forget the buns, the menu and party may be ruined.

Similarly, in estate planning, you first need to determine what you own. Estate Planning Attorneys usually provide a checklist to inventory all assets, from property to bank accounts, noting if they are owned individually or jointly with your spouse or another person. Strategies can then be suggested to provide for your loved ones and achieve any other goals you may have, such as gifting, minimizing taxes and distributing assets.

The Invitations - Who Are Your Beneficiaries?

Just like you choose your barbecue guests, you'll need to decide who inherits your assets. It's not just about family; it could include friends or charities. You may wish to provide grandchildren with incentives to attend college or start a business. If a child has an addiction, you may decide not to provide them with an outright inheritance, and instead, create a trust designed to prevent them from using your hard-earned money to support their habit.

Serving Sizes - How Much Does Each Person Get?

At your cookout, you don't serve the same portions to everyone. Your six-foot-tall adult son will likely need a bigger portion than your two-year-old granddaughter. Similarly, in estate planning, you might not want to divide your assets equally among beneficiaries. We can help you tailor distributions based on individual needs and circumstances, avoiding potential conflicts down the line.

Depending on what you own, it may also be important to give certain accounts or property to one beneficiary and not the others. For example, if you have a property or business in which only one child is actively engaged, splitting ownership among multiple siblings may set them up for fights and destroy relationships.

Extra Touches - Personalizing Your Plan

Just as you add extra touches such as umbrellas, tablecloths, or strings of lights to make your barbecue special, you can personalize your estate plan, such as writing letters to loved ones and specifying who gets sentimental items, such as jewelry or artwork. These gestures can make your plan more meaningful and help prevent family disputes.

Lettuce

help you plan: call us so we can ketchup!

Don't wait until you're in hot water to plan your estate. Just like a well-prepared barbecue, a thoughtfully crafted estate plan ensures everyone's satisfaction. Call us today to spill the beans about your estate planning goals, and we will help you create an estate plan that will satisfy your craving to provide a secure future for yourself and your family.

LE ADER S OF LEARNING CELEBRATING EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATORS

Our City believes in celebrating the individuals who profoundly impact our community. This June, we are excited to dedicate a special section of our publication to Teacher Appreciation. This section will highlight the extraordinary efforts and accomplishments of some educators who go above and beyond to shape our children’s future.

Teachers are the heart of our community, dedicating countless hours to ensure that each student receives the best education possible. Their commitment extends beyond the classroom, touching lives in ways that often go unnoticed. In this special section, we will share the stories of some of our most inspiring teachers, showcasing their dedication, passion, and innovative educational approaches.

Many highly successful people credit teachers who impacted them as children. One particularly successful person who credits a teacher’s influence is Oprah Winfrey. Oprah has often spoken about her fourth-grade teacher, Mrs. Duncan, who she says was the first person to make her feel valued and help her believe in her own potential.

Mrs. Duncan’s encouragement and support profoundly affected Oprah, helping to shape her into the confident and booming media mogul she is today. Oprah attributes much of her early development and later success to the positive influence

of this dedicated teacher.

Through these profiles, we aim to illuminate the incredible work our teachers do every day. Their stories are a testament to the power of education and the profound difference one dedicated individual can make.

Join us in celebrating these outstanding educators and recognizing their vital role in our community.

United Way of Broward County is a dedicated supporter of Pride Month, an annual celebration that honors the LGBTQ+ rights movement, highlights LGBTQ+ culture, and encourages everyone to embrace their true selves.

Recognizing the importance of LGBTQ+ individuals’ well-being in enhancing the quality of life in Broward County, United Way funds numerous partner organizations and agencies that support their mental and physical health.

One of these esteemed partner organizations is SunServe (www.sunserve.org) in Wilton Manors. Established in 2002 as the first agency providing social services to the LGBTQ+ community in South Florida, SunServe is a collective of advocates, allies, and champions for economically disadvantaged and marginalized youth, families, adults, and seniors.

Misty Alicea, Director of Women’s Programs, Transgender Services, and LGBTQ+ Competency Training at SunServe, recently shared insights on the organization’s impact on Broward County’s collec tive health.

Why is it important to have a social service agency dedicated to the needs of the LGBTQ+ community?

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Wilton Manors is the second-gayest city in the U.S., and Fort Lauderdale is the gayest mid-sized city in the U.S. SunServe is a nonprofit providing a safe, inclusive space for our clients to receive mental and physical care without discrimination,

prejudice, or stigma. We address unique health disparities among LGBTQ+ people, such as higher rates of mental health issues and substance abuse.

Grants from United Way of Broward County support our health and wellness programs and enable us to connect clients to clinicians who treat LGBTQ+ individuals with respect and understanding.

Over the past two decades, we have supported the health of thousands in the LGBTQ+ community and their families, friends, loved ones, spouses, parents, children, coworkers, employers, and businesses.

When people thrive, our entire community thrives. Empowering just one person can bring about enormous changes in the collective mindset. Much like the United Way of Broward County, we are building a healthier Broward County for everyone who lives here.

What does Pride Month mean to you?

Pride Month is a platform that empowers people and a time to acknowledge the progress we have made and the progress still needed. When I participate in a Pride event, I experience a celebration of inclusion—it’s LGBTQ+ people, allies, supporters, and heteronormative people.

Pride is a celebration of everyone’s rights and freedoms. At SunServe, we celebrate Pride 365 days a year, and I know United Way of Broward County does as well.

How does United Way of Broward County support SunServe’s great work?

The teams at United Way are fantastic allies. Several of SunServe’s programs are entirely reliant on support from them. The needs in Broward County are tremendous, our caseload is increasing exponentially, and we are available to our clients 24/7. Because of United Way, SunServe is expanding its reach and impact. The dedication and contributions of its teams enable SunServe to provide optimal care to an incredibly diverse population.

Pride is more than a celebration; it’s a powerful declaration of identity, unity, and resilience. In the context of public safety, Pride signifies the commitment to ensuring that everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, is treated with dignity and respect. For the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition, Pride embodies its mission to foster an inclusive environment where the LGBTQ+ community is protected and celebrated for their contributions to society.

In the vibrant landscape of Broward County, the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition shines brightly, charting a progressive course through its collaborative endeavors. Founded in December 2020, this coalition stands as a testament to its members’ unwavering commitment to promoting safety, inclusion, and understanding for the LGBTQ+ community within law enforcement agencies, fire rescue departments, and various levels of government organizations at the city, state, and federal levels. As we celebrate Pride Month and reflect on the strides made in the fight for equality, it’s crucial to recognize the pivotal role played by this coalition in championing LGBTQ+ rights.

United in Diversity, Stronger Together

to protect and serve them.

At the core of the coalition’s mission lies the concept of representation. By appointing liaisons and allies within each participating organization, the coalition ensures that the LGBTQ+ community’s voices, concerns, and experiences are not only heard but prioritized. This direct line of communication serves as a lifeline, offering support, guidance, and advocacy within their respective departments and the wider community.

effect of positive change that resonates throughout South Florida and beyond.

The coalition’s work is a testament to the power of unity, the importance of representation, and the transformative potential of collective action. This coalition is a shining example of what can be achieved when diverse stakeholders come together with a shared vision of inclusivity and social justice. It reminds us that, despite our challenges, there is always hope in unity.

In the spirit of Pride, let us stand in solidarity with the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition and reaffirm our commitment to building a more just, inclusive, and compassionate society for all. Together, we can continue to march towards a future where every individual is celebrated, every voice is heard, and every heart is filled with pride.

The birth of the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition emerged from an acute awareness of the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in accessing public safety services and working within these agencies. Historically, LGBTQ+ individuals have encountered discrimination, bias, and exclusion in various aspects of society, including law enforcement and public safety sectors. However, the coalition aims to rewrite this narrative by breaking down barriers and building trust between the LGBTQ+ community and those sworn

From training frontline personnel to participating in town hall meetings, every initiative underscores the coalition’s steadfast commitment to equity and justice. By developing and implementing inclusive policies, comprehensive training, and targeted outreach initiatives, the coalition actively works to address the unique public safety concerns of the LGBTQ+ community. In doing so, it not only enhances the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals but also strengthens the fabric of the community as a whole.

The impact of the Broward Multi-Agency Pride Coalition extends far beyond the borders of Broward County. It serves as a beacon for other counties seeking to foster greater inclusivity and understanding within their jurisdictions. By sharing their experiences and best practices, the coalition has inspired others to follow suit, including neighboring regions like Miami-Dade and Palm Beach County, sparking a ripple

BROWARD MULTI-AGENCY PRIDE COALITION:

For over half a century, our community has celebrated Pride, which commemorates the Stonewall Uprising on June 28th, 55 years ago. Since 1969, we have made great strides in our quest for equality, from marriage, the right to adopt and build a family, jobs, housing, and healthcare security to the right to serve in the military while being true to ourselves—all in under 55 years. The public acceptance of our community has been swift but not complete and certainly not without pushback.

The last few years with book bans and “Don’t Say Gay” legislation were stark reminders that complacency is not an option

Embracing Pride & Fighting for Equality

and “Silence = Death” still looms overhead. The differences between 2024 and 1969 are enormous, but we cannot take our eyes off those filled with prejudice, hate, and anger. As other nations institute the death penalty for their LGBTQ+ populations, we can be sure that like-minded people are in our midst as well. Keeping our organizations well-funded, our institutions healthy, and our community informed is not simply an option but a necessity.

As we look to the future and the next 50+ years, we can celebrate that we are a talented community able to stand up for itself. We must never forget that our community thrives in every other community regardless of color, race, nationality, ethnicity, religion, gender, or place of origin. We are on all sides of every issue and carry the good and bad of the world in which we live. Those shared experiences give us strength. It allows us to be the world’s unifiers, even in these most divided times.

We even have a month dedicated to our efforts toward global unification: June is Pride Month. We have the opportunity to bring everyone under the rainbow flag, for those colors represent not only the LGBTQ+ population but everyone. We know how these other people think, how they feel, and why they act as they do. They are our parents, siblings, neighbors, and friends. We work with and live with them, and by welcoming them under our rainbow tent, we give them the communit y they seek.

Yes, we have a great deal more to do to protect our LGBTQ+ family from those who fear us because of who we love. Still, by being more inclusive, by being more welcoming, by reminding

others we are all more alike than we are different, and by holding to our belief that we are all the colors of the rainbow, we can weaken the grasp of hate and expand the meaning of liberation and Pride. So, this June, wherever you are, invite everyone you know to Pride; it should not matter who they love.

The Stonewall National Museum & Archives in Fort Lauderdale is a beacon for LGBTQ+ history and culture. Founded in 1973, it houses over 34,000 books and more than 6 million pages of archival materials, making it one of the largest gay archives in the U.S. The museum offers a rich collection of artifacts, documents, and photographs from the gay rights movement, providing interactive educational programs and special events throughout the year. With its extensive library and archival resources, the museum serves as a crucial hub for scholars, researchers, and the public to explore and celebrate LGBTQ+ heritage.

It’s always a pleasure reviewing the Mayor’s Scholarship applications and reading the amazing accomplishments of our future leaders. The resumes and applications are truly inspiring and give me hope for a bright future. This year I will be awarding one scholarship and am proud to recognize a young woman with big dreams and aspirations, Western High School senior, Aliyah Sarmiento.

Ms. Sarmiento is 1 of 27 high school ambassadors of the National Coalition Against Censorship, a free speech organization that is headquartered in New York that aims to promote freedom of speech. Through this organization, she has published an article through the National Council of Teachers of English and participated in workshops with Harvard Lawyers and TedTalk speakers. Another one of Aliyah’s passions is Speech and

DAVIE UPDATE

Debate. As a captain in Platform Speaking and a three-year varsity member of the Western High School Speech and Debate team, she has consistently honed her communication skills. Aliyah also served as President and Historian of the History National Honor Society, which underscores her commitment to academic excellence. Additionally, her involvement in the English National Honor Society, UNICEF Club, Women’s Empowerment Club, and Model United Nations highlights her dedication to social causes. As an early Decision admitted student to the University of Pennsylvania, Wharton School of Business, Aliyah plans to concentrate on Business Ethics and Legal studies to better prepare herself for law school. Congratulations!!!

We have already begun preparing our Fiscal Year 2025 budget that continues our commitment to keeping Davie the place to live, work, learn, and play! I always tell people the budget cycle is like a circle – there is no end. Our Town Administrator, Richard J. Lemack, led a very successful publicly advertised FY2025 Vision and Goal Setting

Session (VGS) where we rigorously discussed a variety of topics, on the Town’s finances, Stormwater Capital Projects, and Initiatives, the status of the Public Safety Strategic Plan implementation and addressing the housing needs at all price points in Davie. The presentation is available on the Town’s website at www.davie-fl.gov/VGS. We always seek your input, and this is an enhanced opportunity as we share many new initiatives and information

The veteran’s breakfasts will continue through the summer and it is amazing that at the April breakfast, we served 107 people. We are now partnering with Oakmonte Village where more than 20 residents are veterans. They will be joining us in small groups as we continue to honor their collective years of service. I recently helped celebrate Danny Jacobson’s 105th birthday, at Oakmonte, with a proclamation. His is a wonderful story. Danny was with the division that liberated the Dachau concentration camp in 1945, having served four years in the army and seeing much combat!!! God bless all our veterans.

MANATEE BAY ROBOTICS TEAM SHINES WITH TOP AWARD AT

NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

The Robotics team from Manatee Bay Elementary School won the Think Award at the VEX IQ World Championship held in Dallas, Texas, last month. This award recognizes the most effective and consistent use of coding techniques and programming design solutions to solve the game challenge. The team scored in the top 5% of all participating teams, showcasing their impressive STEM skills and dedication.

The VEX IQ World Championship is the highest level of robotics competition for students, with more than 400 teams from around the world competing. The students from Manatee Bay Elementary designed and programmed a custom-built robot to perform specific tasks, demonstrating exceptional problem-solving abilities and teamwork. Their success at this competition highlights their hard work and the quality of the BCPS STEM+ Computer Science Programs, Applied Learning Department.

In addition to Manatee Bay Elementary, other Broward County schools also achieved notable rankings at various robotics competitions. Silver Palms Elementary School scored among the top 10% of teams at the VEX IQ World Championship, while Coral Springs Middle School placed in the top 12%. These

achievements underscore the strength and competitiveness of BCPS robotics teams on the global stage.

At the VEX Robotics U.S. Open CREATE National Competition in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Nova Eisenhower Elementary School finished in approximately the top third of all teams. This national championship saw 61 teams competing from across the country, highlighting the broad participation and high level of competition.

BCPS JROTC teams also excelled at the JROTC National Championship at VEX World in Dallas. South Plantation High School had two teams that scored among the top 12% and 19%, respectively. Monarch High School placed in the top 29%, Deerfield Beach High School in the top 30%, Dillard 6-12 in the top 45%, and Cypress Bay High School in the top 46%. These rankings reflect the dedication and skill of BCPS students in the JROTC program.

BCPS Superintendent Dr. Howard Hepburn expressed his pride in the students' achievements. "Competing in the national and world championships is a tremendous accomplishment, and we are so proud of these student teams. Reaching this elite level of competition requires an incredible amount of dedication. The students and their coaches work hard all

year long perfecting their robots; participating in challenges at the local, regional, and state levels to qualify; and raising money for travel expenses. They did an outstanding job, and we can’t wait to see what’s in store for them next season!”

The success of BCPS robotics teams demonstrates the district's commitment to providing high-quality STEM education and the importance of supporting students in their pursuit of excellence. Congratulations to all the teams for their remarkable achievements!

Heel Pain in Children

Does your son or daughter complain of heel pain daily, especially during or after activity? Do they remember any traumatic event or did the pain just occur? If this sounds like your child, there is a high probability that they have Calcaneal Apophysitis (or Sever’s Disease). This is actually a condition and not a disease. This occurs when the growth plate (apophysis) located at the bottom and back of the heel (the portion of the bone that allows growth) becomes painfully inflamed. Although plantar fasciitis (inflammation of the ligament that supports the arch) is the most common cause of heel pain in adults, it is extremely uncommon in children.

CAUSE

• Growth plate inflammation on the back and the bottom of the heel

• Over-activity in children commonly between the ages of 8 and 14

• Tight muscles in the lower extremity, especially

the calf muscle

• Flatfeet

• Poor shoe gear or walking barefoot

• Growth spurts

SYMPTOMS

• Discomfort in the heel bone at the end of activity

• Occasionally painful to the Achilles and ankle

• Stiffness in the foot in the morning and pain with walking or running

• Pain alleviated by rest and a decrease in activity

• Pain is usually present during or after a child is done with the activity, sits for a period of time, and then tries to get up and walk

SIGNS

• Tenderness to the back and bottom of the heel with touch or grasping the heel

• Walking on the ball of the foot to avoid touching the heel to the ground

• Discoloration and swelling are almost never seen in the heel

• Limping at the end of an activity that may persist as the condition worsens

TREATMENT

• Modification of activity and avoiding going barefoot

• Rest and ice

• Stretching exercises

• Proper shoe gear and heel lifts to decrease tension on the heel

• Night splinting to stretch the tight calf muscle and arch ligament

• Taping the foot to decrease the pulling of the plantar fascia on the heel bone

• Custom molded orthotics to support the foot and help restore proper alignment

• Occasional immobilization in a boot or cast to completely rest the heel and allow healing

• Physical therapy to improve flexibility and diminish inflammation of the growth plate

TIMING OF TOOTH ERUPTION

One of the most common anxieties parents share with us concerns the timing of the eruption of teeth. We are often asked: when are the first teeth scheduled to enter the mouth? Or which is “better” late vs. early erupting teeth? The truth of the matter is that although there are published milestones, there is still a normal variation/range that teeth may be expected to erupt. In terms of which is better, there is no real benefit for early or late eruption. However, extreme deviations may cause a practical challenge as we will discuss.

Let’s start with the primary (or “baby”) teeth. The first primary tooth to erupt is usually the lower central incisor between 5-8 months of age. The teeth will then follow the “rule of twos” which is that two additional teeth will erupt every two months until around 2-2.5 yrs old. There is a total of 20 primary teeth equally divided between upper and lower arches. After the eruption of the lower central incisors, we will see the eruption of the upper central incisors, the lower lateral incisors (as the name suggests, next to the central incisors) followed by the upper lateral incisors. The pattern will continue from the center laterally with the lower erupting earlier than the upper counterparts.

Premature eruption of primary teeth occurs in 1:2000. This can occur in two ways. “Natal” teeth are present at birth and “prenatal” teeth erupt in the first 30 days of life. When teeth erupt prematurely, it is important to consult with your healthcare provider (pediatrician or pediatric dentist) as strategies for feeding will need to be addressed, especially if breastfeeding is planned. There are also structures that are present at birth that resembles premature teeth but are not actually the primary teeth. One of the most common examples of this is “Epstein pearls”. They are visible cysts located in the upper arch in the front close to where the primary teeth are expected to be positioned. There is no treatment recommended for this as long as there is no interference with feeding and no observed discomfort for the child.

As with all published milestones, it is important to acknowledge the fact that these are just averages and that “normal” has a range. We find variation in gender, with females being ahead of males. It is also important to note that deviations in one area may have no bearing on others. For example, there are many children who are either “ahead” or “behind” in dental development but are at the opposite ends of the spectrum in skeletal growth. They do, however, give us an idea of what to plan for and some guidance on timing of interventional treatment, whether dental or orthodontic, when indicated.
