“When Mom said she wanted to move to The Palace, I said she’d been binge-watching The Crown too much.”
“We have a lot of fun together, but I worry about her alone in that house. She says I come by too often and pester her too much about meds and diet. So to preserve her independence, she told me she was moving to the new Palace in Weston. I was skeptical when she took me there. I was dazzled 10 minutes later. It is gorgeous, they haven’t skimped on anything, and the people are fabulous. I knew she would be in good hands. So that will be a relief for both of us. And I’m always invited for Happy Hour and all of their legendary parties. Worried if The Palace is right for your mother? Come take the tour and you’ll never worry again.”

Here’s to George Washington!
T
he United States will turn 246 this year. This is cause for celebration. We live in the world’s longest-running representative democracy since Julius Caesar ended the Roman Republic over 2,000 years ago.
Our country’s ability to evolve with the times while maintaining its constitutional government is one of the keys to our long-lasting success. In large part, we have George Washington to thank for that. Washington was an extraordinarily popular figure following the end of the Revolutionary War and many people were calling for a strong executive to serve as President. While they did not want a king, many wanted a “strong” leader with king-like powers. If Washington chose to consolidate power during his early days as President, rather than humbly focusing on establishing a democracy, history could have turned out very differently. This is precisely what happened in France just three years after Washington left office. Napoleon Bonaparte quickly morphed his role as First Consul of France into the lifetime Emperor of France. It is easy to imagine decades of unrest and conflict had Washington had similar ambitions. While we watch the fireworks and celebrate Independence Day this year, lets give a nod of gratitude to our first President. George Washington set the example for every American leader. We all can aspire to his humility and deep belief in duty, especially our elected officials.

Independent Wealth Management Services By Terry Jaillet
B
olton Global Capital has recently opened one of its newest offices in Weston. The 35-year-old wealth management firm provides financial advice and investment services to affluent U.S. and International families. The firm manages more than $12 Billion for its clients at its 50 affiliated offices around the world. The team at Bolton’s Weston office is knowledgeable and extremely experienced. Some of the advisors have 20 to 35 years in the industry. Prior to joining Bolton, the team worked at well-known financial institutions including Wells Fargo Advisors, Merrill Lynch, and Bank of America. The Weston team includes:
Financial Advisors
Jorge Aguerrevere Ernesto Amengual Felix Bosque
Andrei Santos Leonardo Tedeschi
Registered Client Associates
Carolina Castillo Milton Ceotto
Maigualida Lanzetta Adriana Perez
We took the opportunity to sit down with Financial Advisor, Felix Bosque to learn more about the team and Bolton Global Capital's Advisors.
Tell us about Bolton Global Capital
We are a wealth management firm with a network of Financial Advisors providing financial advice and investment allocation services. As a group, we are knowledgeable and experienced financial advisors. The combination of knowledge and the years of experience we have as a group is priceless for our clients. It’s the key to helping our clients navigate through these turbulent and volatile markets and assisting them in achieving their financial goals.
Sounds great! How are you different from big financial institutions? Most big financial institutions limit the investment products they offer their clients. In contrast, we have access to all types of investment products. This is important because in our neighborhood we have individuals that have the capital, knowledge, experience, risk profile, and the appetite to invest in some products that financial institutions won’t let them. Now with us, they have the avenue to access them.
Do you have experience with international markets and clients?
Yes! Our financial advisors have extensive experience with international markets. We have all lived in other countries and manage international clients. Therefore, we have a great understanding of investment opportunities all around the world.
What sets you apart from other financial advisors in the area?
Many individuals in the Davie and Weston area rely on their local Bank to provide investment services. However,
16 / Our City Davie / July 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
at a branch, you don’t get the full benefits of a Financial Advisor. Bank branches often have a high turnover of employees; you might call the branch looking for your financial advisor to find out he/she no longer works there. We are a network of independent Financial Advisors who already have made our careers. Our only focus is on our clients. There’s a big difference between a financial advisor that’s starting or in the process of making his career and one that already has built his independent practice. At the local bank you are an account number, while in Bolton you get personalized attention. You have our direct numbers. In addition, we proactively call you to discuss current market conditions, investment ideas, performance reviews, and occasionally just to check up on you and the family.
Is there a minimum investment? Yes, $500,000.
Sounds good, what can a new client expect when working with you?
Every client will get a Financial Advisor for life and for future generations. Many of our clients have been with us for 20 or 30 years. Most of the time we manage many members of the family and/or business associates. In some cases, we are managing second and third generations of our clients. We maintain constant communication with our clients via phone conversations, zoom meetings, and personal visits to provide performance reports and market updates. Give us a call or stop by our Weston offices to find out how we can help your family.

EAT TO THE BEAT Returns to Copper City
T
he popular Eat to the Beat concert event will return to Cooper City this summer. The city will welcome local favorite “Shane Duncan Band” to the Suellen H. Fardelmann Sports Complex, on July 8th, for a night filled with food, music, and, fun. The festivities kick off at 6:30 pm and conclude around 9:00pm. More than 2,000 people are expected to attend and enjoy cuisine from the wide variety of food trucks that will be on site. Over a thousand participants braved chilly weather for the last Eat to the Beat event in January. The “beats” will be laid down the high-energy variety party band, “Shane Duncan Band.” With an extensive
playlist from genres such as Top 40, Dance, Disco, Pop, Rock, Country, and a little Latin the crowd is sure to be on its feet. The band performs all songs live with NO backing tracks or studio tricks and is a favorite across the region. “Cooper City is setting a new standard,” said Mayor Greg Ross, “as a city commission, we are most proud of you, our citizens. This is just another reason our community is a great place to live and raise a family.” Guests of all ages are invited to bring blankets, beach chairs, and their dancing shoes (barefoot dancing works too). Davie Says Goodbye to
T
Town Hall
he Town of Davie held a Town Hall Closeout Ceremony to mark the end of an era and the beginning of a new era. The Town Hall is being demolished to make way for a new, modern building at the same site. A Temporary Town Hall (TTH) has bee set up at Pine Island Park located at 3801 S. Pine Island Road. The ceremony was opened by Davie Mayor Judy Paul, “This is a
day of celebration, but also a day of sadness as we say goodbye to our beloved town hall. This building has served as Davie Town Hall since 1961.” In 2019, the Davie Town Council approved the construction of a new Town Hall at the existing location, 6591 Orange Drive. The facility has significant issues with space, plumbing, electrical, air conditioning, façade deterioration,
pest infestation, building security, lack of Americans with Disability Act (ADA) accommodations, and inadequate public meeting space. Mayor Paul was joined by a group of elected officials, public servants, and citizens, past and present to pay their respects and share memories. The town commission also shared a video featuring the past and future town hall. The new Town Hall will be adjacent to another redevelopment project, Frontier Square, planned at the northwest corner of Orange Drive and Davie Road. Frontier Square is a 150,000 square foot entertainment venue with a parking garage. Davie Town Hall and the
Bergeron Rodeo Grounds are landmarks in the Downtown Davie area and as such, the Town Council saw this as an important part of our investment in the ongoing redevelopment. The new Town Hall will preserve the existing open space and reflect the western theme unique to the town’s heritage. There will be overhangs, covered front porches, metal roofing, a clock, and a wind vane. The old town hall was originally built by the Davie Chamber of Commerce in the 1940s and was used for all manner of civic uses including boy scout meetings, debates, events, and its current function.

Don’t Let Mosquitos Bite!
osquito season is here again. As the summer rains come and go, it’s time to take preventative measures to safeguard yourself and your home. Help reduced mosquito breeding habitats by eliminating standing water in and around your property. The life cycle of a mosquito is approximately seven days. They can breed in small amounts of water that collect in containers like bottles, cans, cups, buckets, hoses, planters, drains and in plants such as bromeliads.
Regularly dump anything that holds water. If it's too large to be dumped, apply larvicide to keep the mosquito larvae from developing. Some mosquitoes, such as the variety that carries the Zika Virus and Yellow Fever, breed indoors and outdoors and bite anytime of the day or night. If you go outdoors on a buggy night, wear shoes, socks, long pants and long sleeves. Spray your skin and clothing with an insect repellent that contains DEET or other approved ingredients.
Draining standing water is the most effective way to stop them from reproducing. “Mosquitoes multiply quickly, but you can stop them in their tracks,” said Dr. Paula Thaqi, Director of the Florida Department of Health in Broward County. “Practice ‘drain and cover.’ When you dump standing water, you eliminate the breeding ground for mosquito larvae and getting rid of the source is the best way to avoid being bitten.” Mosquito eggs that are laid in shallow water can hatch in a day or two. The larvae grow fast, turning into a pupa that quickly develops into a full-grown mosquito. The life cycle, from egg to adult mosquito, takes eight to 10 days. The pupae become flying mosquitoes in two to three days.

Early Orthodontic Treatment
T
here is no doubt that the average age of orthodontic patients has lowered through the years. Just open a yearbook from the 50’s and 60’s and you will see many young adults wearing the stereotypical “train tracks” across their teeth. Movies have spoofed the usage of head gears during the high school years, which was common practice in that era. Braces have become smaller, sleeker, more colorful, and worn with pride by many preteens. For those of you who have young children at home, the main question is whether early treatment is right for your child. To best answer this question, it is first important to define some terms. When discussing “early treatment,” I personally prefer the term interceptive treatment. It has the connotation of catching something before it becomes a bigger problem. The more common and practical term is “Phased” orthodontic treatment. In this case, treatment done at an earlier age (usually between 6-9 years old) is referred to as Phase I. It is aimed at correction of habits, skeletal
By Dr. Alon Grosman discrepancies, as well as severe abnormalities in dental eruption. The later treatment, Phase II, is usually done at around 11-13 years old in order to place all permanent teeth in an ideal position. I call it more practical because in most cases the second treatment is needed. The name serves as a reminder to the parents of this fact. Currently, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the first orthodontic evaluation occur by age 7. Does this mean that all children require phased orthodontic treatment? Certainly not. The criteria for starting early treatment should be better or more predictable results. In my opinion, this is certainly the case when the upper jaw is too narrow and must be expanded, when upper front teeth are so protrusive (“buck”) that the incidence of trauma is much more likely (unless
corrected), and cases of underbite (when the lower jaw is forward of the upper jaw). These treatments are “no brainers” for two reasons. The body of the younger patient is more amenable to these specific orthopedic (growth) corrections and statistically the preteen is more likely to traumatize a front tooth than at any other time. There are other times that treatment may be done for psychosocial reasons, as some children are very conscious of cosmetics. For those parents who are considering early treatment for their children, I recommend listening with an open mind. See if the reasons for starting treatment make sense to you. The rule of thumb would be “if it does not make sense, don’t do it! I find that most parents have a life philosophy which may make them either more or less open to preventative type treatments. As a parent, I find that I know what my child will be able to handle and be up to. Most importantly, if you decide as a family to start, have fun with it.

Broward Students Celebrate National Merit Scholarships
T
he National Merit Scholarship Corporation named 17 Broward County seniors recipients of the prestigious National Merit Scholarship. The National Merit Scholarship Program was founded to identify and honor scholastically talented American youth and to encourage them to develop their abilities to the fullest. Only 1% of the 1.7 million entrants are selected as Semifinalists each year. The Semifinalists are students who achieve the highest scores on the PSAT/NMSQT in their respective states. Fewer than 8,000 of the Semifinalists go on to win scholarships. The winners are selected on a state-by-state basis and are judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills, and potential for success in rigorous college studies. NMSC winners receive a $2,500 scholarship and the honor of being a Nation Merit Scholar.
Broward’s winners include: • • • • • • • • • • •

Vishal Suresh of Cypress Bay High School is the recipient of the National Merit L3Harris Technologies Scholarship. Corporate sponsors provide National Merit Scholarships for finalists who are either children of their employees, residents of communities the company serves, or finalists who plan to pursue college majors or careers the sponsor wishes to encourage. Since its founding, NMSC has recognized over 3.4 million students and provided some 451,000 scholarships worth over $1.8 billion. The honors awarded by NMSC to exceptionally able students are viewed as definitive marks of excellence. Internet Safety Month Targets
Keeping Children Safe Online
N
By Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book
o parent in their right mind would drop off a child in the middle of Times Square or the Las Vegas Strip with little more than a safety talk and a directive to behave — but that is in essence what’s occurring when children are allowed to access the Internet, largely unsupervised and unprotected, on digital devices. Each Internetcapable device acts as an open door for millions of people, directly into your — and your child’s — life. An invaluable resource when used for education, entertainment, and discovery, parents must realize that the digital world is also a playground for skilled predators. Where kids go, so too do those who wish to harm them…which means digital devices pose a clear and present danger for kids. In fact, 1 in 5 children who touch a digital device is sexually solicited online. Chilling. Especially when you consider that more than a third of children under age 12 began interacting with a smartphone before they entered Kindergarten, and 20 percent of this same cohort have a smartphone of their own. While authorities and Internet watchdog groups across the world are doing all they can to crack down on online predation, parents and caregivers must be the first line of defense when it comes to cyber safety. I urge families and youth-serving organizations to use to learn about ways to keep children safe online. Safety starts with priming digital devices to ensure children are protected as much as possible on a very basic level. Prior to giving any Internet capable device to a child, conduct a thorough investigation into its capabilities and ensure you are the primary user/administrator so that nothing can be done without your approval (changing passwords or settings, downloading applications, etc.). Also remember that just because your child’s friends are using an app or game, does not mean it is safe. Apps may require location settings to be shared while in use or promote inter-app messaging between players or users. Predators have been known to groom unsuspecting kids on popular games like Fortnite or apps such as Snapchat. While safety settings help mitigate the opportunity for predators to contact children, constant monitoring of a child’s device is one of the most effective protective measures. Establishing an Internet code of conduct is also important for children of all ages to understand that their behavior online should mirror their behavior in the physical world. Questions to consider include: • Does your child understand that things posted on the Internet or sent on a digital device are permanent – even if the content is deleted from your child’s device? • Does your child know not to post any personal information about themselves (pictures, address, phone number, etc.) online? • Does your child understand that communicating with someone online that they do not know is very dangerous because that person could be anyone, even an adult? Online predators are smart — but with education, awareness, and advocacy, we can be smarter. When it comes to safety, conversations do not have to be scary or uncomfortable. Instead, bring kids to the table and empower them with rules and tools to navigate the digital world safely, securely, and with confidence. Above all else, ensure your child or teen knows how to recognize unsafe situations and that they know they can come to you to talk about ANYTHING without fear of getting in trouble. If you find that your child has been contacted by a predator, contact the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children’s Cyber Tip Line and submit a report at cybertopline.org or 1-800-THE-LOST.

Planning for the Unexpected
I
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
t’s Tuesday morning. Your husband’s flight to Venezuela just departed. In the family room, 2-year-old Sophia is amusing herself while waiting for Jennifer, your new 16-year-old neighbor who has been babysitting a few mornings this summer. It’s your special time to run errands or get in some exercise. Today is the perfect day to try out a new pair of rollerblades. Lace-up. Earbuds in. Sunscreen on. You tell Jennifer you’ll be back in about 90 minutes and off you go to the local park. It’s unusually quiet this morning. While skating along at a fast pace, you hit a rock, lose your balance and fly wildly out of control into a swale of high grass, where your phone ends up behind a bush and you hit your head. Everything goes dark… Thankfully, a jogger finds you and calls 911. You are transported to a hospital but are unconscious. With no identification, the hospital doesn’t know who you are or whom to call. Hours later, Jennifer becomes concerned when you don’t return home as expected. She calls your cell phone, but there’s no answer. She also tries your husband’s number which goes directly to voice mail. Afternoon arrives and Jennifer begins to really worry. She has plans of her own, and you were supposed to be home hours ago. What should she do? She calls her own mother who advises, “Call the police.” Two uniformed officers arrive and ask questions. They check police reports and hospitals. There is an unidentified woman at a local hospital who may be the missing mom, but she is unconscious. The police evaluate the situation and determine there is no family member present to take care of Sophia. What happens next is a parent’s nightmare. Your daughter is now in the care of the Florida Department of Children and Families. Is our story far-fetched? Probably. But while this type of scenario is not likely to happen to your family, it reminds us to make sure we plan for the unexpected. At a minimum, every family should have standard written babysitter instructions which include contact information for family members and friends who should be contacted if parents cannot be reached. In addition, an attorney can help to prepare a Power of Attorney for Childcare, authorization for the care, custody, medical care, and even travel for your minor children. It is certainly not necessary to consult an attorney to put together babysitter instructions. This is something that parents can create on their own. However, other legal documents are best drafted by an experienced estate planning attorney who can offer counsel and ensure that documents are properly prepared and executed. You want to make sure your legal documents work when you need them. Having a family plan for the unexpected may help keep small incidents from becoming big problems.
Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
