“When Mom said she wanted to move to The Palace, I said she’d been binge-watching The Crown too much.”
“We have a lot of fun together, but I worry about her alone in that house. She says I come by too often and pester her too much about meds and diet. So to preserve her independence, she told me she was moving to the new Palace in Weston. I was skeptical when she took me there. I was dazzled 10 minutes later. It is gorgeous, they haven’t skimped on anything, and the people are fabulous. I knew she would be in good hands. So that will be a relief for both of us. And I’m always invited for Happy Hour and all of their legendary parties. Worried if The Palace is right for your mother? Come take the tour and you’ll never worry again.”

It's Time for School Again
SUMMER CHECK-UP TIME!
I
t is hard to believe that the summer is already ending. It’s time to review the school supplies list, pick out that lucky lunch box, and finish the summer reading assignments. August 16th is the first day of school for most kids in the area. Preparing for school has certainly gotten more complex over the past 20 years. We have gone from wrapping textbooks in brown paper bags to downloading software onto smartphones, iPads, and Chromebooks. After-school programs have exploded from sports and music to a variety of different opportunities from computer classes to dual language programs. Parents have more choices as well. Neighborhood schools, charter schools, home school and virtual school are options now in addition to traditional private and public schools. If your family is like ours, you might not have everything planned just yet. Have no fear, Our City is here to help! Check out our Back to School Guide in this issue. It contains useful information on the area’s best preschools, private schools, and educational programs in addition to almost every afterschool activity you can think of, from arts to the YMCA. The material is curated to provide a useful guide to help you get ready for the new school year. Please enjoy these last few weeks of summer. School will start before you know it.

DANCE THEATRE CELEBRATES
THIRTY YEARS OF EXCELLENCE
I
f you live in South Florida and have any interest in dance, the odds are pretty good you already know the name. With three Broward locations, including Parkland, Coral Springs, and Davie, Dance Theatre has become an integral part of our community, one fabulous dancer at a time. Accolades? Of course. Dance Theatre has been awarded the prestigious “Reader’s Choice” and “Best in the West” awards multiple times. Trophies? Thousands. Dance Theatre’s elite team of competitive dancers, DTX, consistently receives top awards at virtually every competition they attend. Testimonials? You bet. Just ask any mother in the carpool line and they’ll tell you that Dance Theatre has been like a home away from home for their children. So what is it that makes this place so special? Why has every community Dance Theatre serves embraced it for so long? “My answer is always the same,” says owner and Director Michelle Gerlick, “We build beautiful, safe, clean facilities, hire the best teachers in the business, and treat each child that walks through our doors as if they were our very own.” If you think that sounds like a winning formula, you are not alone. Michelle estimates that over sixty thousand families have attended classes at Dance Theatre throughout its history, “and sixty thousand moms can’t be wrong," she says. Hard to argue with that. “Awards are nice, and our trophies are beautiful,” Michelle continues, “but that’s not what we strive for. We shoulder an enormous responsibility with our promise to educate. It is incumbent upon us to do it effectively. We train exceptional dancers, yes, but we also help to raise exceptional young women (and a few men). Our staff is teeming with strong, positive, intelligent role models that are so important to our students as they mature. We work hard, we have passion, and we care deeply about the impact we have on their lives. When a parent tells me their child has flourished since enrolling, I melt. When past graduates return to say we helped them find success in life, as with dance, nothing can compare. That’s why we do this.”
16 / Our City Davie / August 2022 / OurCityMedia.com
Michelle certainly has the pedigree to run one of the nation’s most successful dance programs. Her mother Joan was a Rockette, June Taylor Dancer, and half of a performance duo, along with her father Bob, which thrilled audiences the world over working with the likes of Sammy Davis, Jr. and Tony Bennett. Michelle spent nearly every day of her youth inside her parents’ dance school, the Academy of Ballet Arts, practicing and perfecting her craft, and then earned both a degree in Dance from The Ohio State University, and a degree in Elementary Education from Nova Southeastern. Her professional credits include performing as a Miami Heat Dancer, a “Fly Girl” on Fox Television’s In Living Color, and an NFL Super Bowl Choreographer and Dancer. Michelle has since led her students at Dance Theatre to The Summer Olympics, The Super Bowl, and The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, among countless other extraordinary venues. Still not convinced that Dance Theatre is THE place for your young dancer to train? Consider this...they offer a truly comprehensive program where dancers ages 3 through adult, beginner through advanced, can take classes in every possible discipline including the basics, like ballet, tap, jazz, lyrical, hip hop, contemporary, acrobatics, and pointe, as well as specialty classes like their wildly popular silks class. In addition, dancers who excel and aspire to become dance professionals may join either their performance company, DTC, which specializes in providing entertainment at amazing venues like Miami Heat and Miami Dolphins games, or their elite group of dancers, Team DTX, where they can travel to local, regional and national competitions and hone their skills against the best dancers in the nation! For those interested in joining the Dance Theatre family, there are several ways. First, you can call any of the studios and speak to someone today. Second, you can visit their web-site, www. dancetheatre.net, view the Fall Schedules, and register online at any time by filling out the simple registration form. Finally, if you prefer to register in person, you can stop by the Parkland studio (Publix center on 441 & Holmberg Rd.) any time Monday – Friday from 9:00 -4:00 until August 13th. Better hurry though, Fall classes begin August 22nd and they fill quickly!
■ COMMUNITY NEWS
COOPER CITY AMONG SAFEST CITIES IN FLORIDA
C
ooper City is the tenth safest city in Florida according to Internet home safety website, safewise.com. Cooper City was joined by fellow Broward County communities of Parkland (number 3)
and Weston (number 2). The safest city in Florida was the appropriately named city of Niceville, which is just outside of Fort Walton Beach. Safewise reviews and sells home and internet security systems. The
company claims its mission is to inspire people to embrace safety as a lifestyle, turn their homes into sanctuaries, and invest in their communities. They also conduct an impressive amount of research. The company’s website states, “We contextualize national crime and safety trends to show how they affect you and your neighborhood. We use this knowledge to examine safety and security products and find out whether they’re worth your time.” While Cooper City is much safer than Florida at large, the state is doing relatively well compared to the country as a whole. Violent crime rates in Florida have held steady for three years in a row, bucking a trend of increased violent crime nationally. Despite this fact, Floridians claimed to be
more concerned about crime than Americans as a whole. Cooper City’s violent crime rate was reported at 1 per 1,000 people for 2021 while property crime was reported at 11.7 crimes per 1,000 people. There are likely many factors affecting crime rates within communities including the relative affluence of residents, prevalence of alcohol and illicit drug use, and police presence and community outreach. For the eighth straight year, the rest of the country gets to hear what we already know. Cooper City is a great place to live and raise a family.

“Cowboy Town” Comes Alive for the
T
2022 Weekley Brothers Davie Pro Rodeo
he Town of Davie lived up to its nickname on June 24th, and 25th as “Cowboy Town” came alive for the Weekley Brothers Davie Pro Rodeo. The weekend festivities kicked off on Friday morning with a sold-out event for local summer camps and concluded with the full-fledged professional rodeo on Saturday night.
Davie Pro Rodeo for Youth
The weekend’s events started on Friday morning with the 24th annual youth rodeo. The event invited local youth groups and summer camps to watch and participate. Rodeo promoters Weekley Brothers partnered with 5 Star Youth of America to organize the event. “We believe that Rodeo is an American tradition, and we want to make sure that all children in South Florida experience the Cowboy Heritage and western lifestyle,” Weekley Brothers said in a statement, “We have fun and excitement for everyone with Cowboys and Cowgirls taking part in major Rodeo events.” Davie Mayor Judy Paul commented on Facebook, “Rodeo experience for all the local camps and Boys and Girls Clubs. Thank you Troy Weekley, Weekley Brothers Pro Rodeo, and Five Star Rodeo!”
Saturday Night Live
A sold-out, full-capacity crowd came early to watch the Cowboys and Cowgirls do what they do best. The evening began with a patriotic tribute. Cowgirls road out
displaying the stars and stripes followed by the playing of the National Anthem. After a raucous round of cheers, the events began. Big winners on the night were Juan Alcazar, winner of top All-Around Cowboy and Steer Wrestling, Team roping winners Braxton and Brad Culpepper, Windall Tindall in tie-down roping, and Barrel Racing winner Ashley Parks. Both rodeo events were call-backs to Davie’s western roots. The community came together to watch and support the incredible athletes and animals. We can’t wait till November for the Southeastern Circuit Finals Rodeo. Be sure to wear your best hat!

Unexpected Cavities
A
lmost daily, we have a child come in to our office with many more cavities than anticipated. In some instances, they are “regulars” coming in for their six month checks and everyone present attests to their daily brushing ritual. Still, in a relatively short period of time, these cavities have formed between the teeth. To understand this situation better, it is helpful to look at the underlying causes of cavities. In order to form a dental cavity, there are certain ingredients which are a must. First of all, cavity causing bacteria must be present. The most notable of these bacteria are the Streptococcus Mutans. Although the thought of bacteria entering the mouth is an unsavory one, it is a fact of life. In fact, these bacteria make a home in our mouth at a very early age and are usually transmitted unintentionally by a child’s caregiver (i.e. when blowing on a hot spoon during feeding time). The bacteria colonize on our teeth and form a plaque. They use sugars we ingest to increase the size of the plaque. Biproducts from these colonies are acidic. This decrease
By Dr. Maria Grosman in pH begins the process of breakdown of the tooth’s outer layer, the enamel. Once this shell is accessed, the bacteria can start to travel through the tooth. Therefore, the main players are bacteria, sugar, and acidity. We recommend brushing and flossing to reduce the quantities of bacteria and remove sugars left behind after meals. Fluoride can be used to strengthen the enamel. Xylitol products are showing some promising data in the ability to limit the effectiveness of the bacteria. Still, a person who brushes/flosses and goes to the dentist for cleanings and fluoride application can still have cavities depending on intake of certain foods and liquids. As it turns out, consumption of sugar is not the only advantage that our diet provides the bacteria. Many of the foods and beverages we are consuming are acidic and therefore lower the overall pH in the mouth speeding the process of cavity making. For example, diet soda may have no simple sugars useful to the bacteria, but the carbonation creates a very acidic oral environment. Studies have shown that many of the popular sports drinks are more acidic than batteries used for small appliances. After a little digging, we usually find out that the unexpected cavities are preceded by the intake of acidic beverages. The bad news is
that our modern diet is full of sugary acidic foods. Our children’s heroes promote them in every marketing medium. Our office philosophy is not to deny our children their treats but rather to modify eating habits and limit the periods of exposure to certain foods. For example, a child who drinks a sports drink after practice should do so at one sitting rather than doing so throughout the day. We recommend rinsing with water after consuming acidic drinks as it is very effective at balancing pH. If hard candy is eaten, brushing should be done. Sugary snacks should be eaten with meals. Snacks eaten between meals should be of a healthier variety, like fruits veggies and granola. The idea is to be creative rather than restrictive. Happy eating!

■ ASK THE EXPERT
BENEFITS OF RUNNING WITH ORTHOTICS By Dr. John Goodner, D.P.M.
W
hether you like to run 5K’s, 10K’s, Half or Full Marathons, having the proper running shoe is the single most important factor in injury prevention for runners of any level of competition or training. Running shoes must be selected based on the following: past experience with different shoe brands; biomechanical demands specific to the gait of the runner; and environment of the running surface on which the runner will race or train. In addition, current injuries and foot type (pronated, neutral, supinated) must be addressed to maximize running efficiency. If a runner is pronated, or flat footed, they are using more muscle energy to compensate and elevate the arch to a more ideal push off position. This leads to slower racing times, more overuse injuries, and degenerative joint changes to the lower extremity. A custom orthotic can maintain the fallen arch in a more energy efficient position allowing your muscles to work less, creating potentially faster racing times, and decreasing lower extremity injury. A supinated or high arch, that is flexible, can also cause pain and present with similar issues; this can be addressed with a custom orthotic as well.
Going for a run? Check out these injury prevention tips first: How often should I replace my running shoes? It is commonly recommended to replace running shoes every 300-500 miles. This can be difficult to keep track of, so the competitive runner should keep a running calendar to calculate when they will need replacement shoes based on their daily mileage and training schedule. For the more casual runner who does not track their mileage, it takes approximately 66 hours to run 500 miles at an eight-minute per mile pace. When is the best time to try on new shoes and how do I know they fit? Always try a new pair of shoes on late afternoon. This is when your feet are the largest due to swelling from standing and activity throughout the day. Always wear a cushioned sock when trying on a new shoe. You should be able to fit your thumb’s width in between your longest toe and the end of the shoe. How many pairs of shoes should I be using at one time? For the competitive runner, two to three pairs of shoes should be used. It is best to alternate running in one pair one day then using the second pair the second day to allow full recoil of the shoe cushioning and maximize the life of your shoes as well as decrease your chance of injury. What shoes should I wear when I’m not running or training? Never walk in flat flexible shoes,
flat sandals, or barefoot; even around your house. Competitive runners use recovery sandals with arch support and a heel that is higher than the toes. Purchase a good pair of supportive house sandals to prevent stress or overuse injury secondary to lack of arch support. What are the best socks for runners? Socks are essential in terms of injury prevention and athletic performance. Synthetic Acrylic/CoolMax® fiber socks are ideal for the distance runner in order to prevent friction skin injuries. Many running stores have sport-specific socks with thickened padding for prominent areas on the feet to prevent mechanical or shear-induced injury to the deep tissue and bone.

Davie Update
By Mayor Judy Paul his year’s legislative session was challenging. Thank you to our Davie representatives who watched out for our residents. Senator Lauren Book, Representatives Robin Bartleman, Michael Gottlieb, and Evan Jenne brought forth our priorities and fought for us. Senator Lauren Book visited our council meeting and discussed the budget and redistricting maps. Senator Book advised that the Town had an incredible caucus fighting for Home Rule, which is always one of our priorities, but that didn’t do well. The State Legislature majority continues to place limits on local government which hinders our ability to adequately meet our resident’s needs. Senator Book pushed for an appropriation which did pass and as a result, Senator Book advised that the Town received an appropriation of $250,000 for Little Country Estates flood mitigation plan. Representative Robin Bartleman thanked the Town Council for their continued support and recognized Town staff. She advised that there were new cyber security rules that the Town needed to pay attention to. House Bill 855 about managed care performance was signed by the Governor. Representative Bartleman recognized Ron Book for his help with the Miya Marcano Bill which made it mandatory for people who have master keys and who access apartments to have background checks. Representative Bartleman stated that the most important Bill she wanted to talk about was House Bill 513. This was important because the Town was impacted by inland flooding as evident through Tropical Storm Eta. The bill will help create a comprehensive report of the deficiencies and the funding gaps towards the issue of flooding in relation to the flood gates. Lauren Jackson, one of our Tallahassee lobbyists, reported that the Cyber Security Bill banned ransomware payments, required reporting of ransomware and mandated training and also mandated local governments to update to certain standards. The legislature appropriated $16 million to training and grants for local governments for that effort. Bill HJR1 would put on the ballot an additional homestead exemption of $50,000 for critical public workers. This included classroom teachers, law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, child welfare workers, active-duty military, and Florida National Guard.

A special thank you to Representative Jenne who is termed out and is not running for re-election. He served us well and took special interest in trying to help us get the legislature to give us the ability to regulate group homes. This continues to be one of our legislative priorities. He was a fighter for the Town of Davie and we will miss him. Here’s to much success in your new endeavors. It also gives me pleasure to introduce Senator Jason Pizzo, who due to the redistricting, will now be representing Davie along with Senator Book. Have a Wonderful August!

Estate Planning is
LIFE PLANNING
E
By Bruce Iden, Esquire
state planning is not just a process undertaken to plan for the orderly and efficient transfer of assets at death. Estate planning is also life planning. Do you have minor children? If so, your planning should address the support of yourself, your spouse and your children in the event that you become disabled. Your plan should provide a source of funds for your children’s education, daycare and medical expenses, as well as for the regular expenses of running your household. In addition, estate planning encompasses retirement planning and creditor protection planning. It has been estimated that more than half of all American adults have no estate plan in place. The distribution of their property, the care and custody of their minor children and the identification of who directs the administration of their estate is left to the state of Florida. Florida has very specific rules in place as to how assets are distributed if a person dies intestate, that is, without a will. What always surprises me is the fact that those people who have invested in an estate plan generally fail to revise or update their plan for up to 20 years. Imagine if you had done your estate plan 20 years ago and never updated it? How different are your financial and personal circumstances now compared with 20 years ago? Would the choices you made, people you identified, and concerns you addressed still be appropriate today? Probably not. A proper estate plan should allow you to control your property while you are alive and well. It should provide for you and your family if you become disabled. And it should allow you to give what you have to whom you want, when you want and in the way you want, all while minimizing the taxes, professional fees, and costs to be borne by you and your loved ones. Estate planning can bring peace of mind in knowing that after you are gone, your spouse, children and even grandchildren can enjoy the property you leave to them, free from the claims of their creditors. You may rest easier knowing that a surviving spouse’s subsequent remarriage, a child’s marriage or divorce, or even an untimely lawsuit or bankruptcy, will not disrupt your loved ones ability to use and enjoy their inheritance. Your estate plan should be reviewed every two to four years. If you do not have an estate plan, or if you do but it is overdue for a review, it would be wise to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney without delay.
Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for?
