“Thank you to Drew for working with me all summer to help improve my ACT score and thank you to Mike and Adam for teaching me everything I needed to know for the SAT. Knowing junior year was going to be stressful I wanted to get the tests done as early as possible, and thanks to Mike, Adam, and Drew, I could.”
“ Mike made a huge difference in my understanding of the math content on the SAT. He not only helped me with the concepts, but taught me how to approach previously confusing problems. After just a few sessions, my math score went up 90 points.“

“What I like most about BTS was the way I could transition from group learning to private lessons so that I could get a basic understanding of each lesson. I could figure out what I did and didn’t understand and then review it in the private lessons. This is what made the difference in my scores. Taking classes the summer before Junior year and finishing tutoring by December was a huge relief and it allowed me to focus on my school work and other extra curricular activities.”

Happy Holidays! BY CHRISTY & TERRY JAILLET
T
he holiday season is upon us. Living in such culturally and religiously diverse communities, the winter holidays can have very different meanings to all of our readers. One thing that seems to be constant, regardless of faith or heritage, is our tendency to celebrate with friends and loved ones. Our family tradition is to celebrate on Christmas Eve Eve (two days before Christmas) with an extended family dinner, followed by a white elephant gift exchange. If you’ve never played, it’s quite simple and entertaining. Participants bring a wrapped gift. Each player, in turn, gets to unwrap a new gift or “steal” one that someone has already unwrapped. Feel free to adopt our family’s holiday tradition as your own. It is always great fun. Speaking of adopting holiday traditions… Our kids beg us each year to celebrate Festivus, the secular holiday made famous on the sitcom Seinfeld. Coincidentally, it is also celebrated on Christmas Eve Eve. Our 16-year-old son is particularly interested in adopting Festivus’ “airing of the grievances”; so far we have successfully resisted! Our family, along with our extended family at Our City Media, wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season. We hope you enjoy this treasured time with loved ones regardless of whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or even Festivus! Best wishes for a festive and safe holiday season.

t’s time to shed some light on the holiday happenings in the Town of Davie. From twinkling lights to a sprinkling of snow, residents will experience a one-of-a-kind winter wonderland. All ages are invited to usher in the holiday season at the annual Lighting of the Greens on Saturday, December 7th from 6-8pm. This evening of holiday music and entertainment marks the official lighting of Davie Town Hall. “The Lighting of the Greens is a staple in the Town,” states Recreation Coordinator Simone JamesCrichton. “The Mayor and Town Councilmembers light up Davie Town Hall with thousands of beautifully adorned lights and officially declare it to be holiday time in the Town. Throughout the month of December, the lights are turned on nightly providing residents and visitors with an opportunity to visit Town Hall with friends and family to take pictures and enjoy the scenic atmosphere.” During this event, prizes will be awarded to the winners of the Christmas Tree, Menorah and
Kinara decorating contest. Davie schools and civic organizations are invited to participate. Before the ceremony, the South Florida Trail Riders will present a Jingle Bell Horse Parade. James-Crichton says the evening will also feature live performances, singing and holiday music, as well as the opportunity to take photos with Santa Claus. Jolly Old Saint Nick returns to Davie on Saturday, December 14th for From 6-9pm that night, Bergeron Rodeo Grounds will be transformed into a winter wonderland, complete with a fresh blanket of snow. “Living in South Florida, many of our residents do not have the chance to interact with snow,” explains James-Crichton. “The Town takes great pride in
providing over 20 tons of snow to our residents so that they can have an opportunity to make snow angels and enjoy a night of frosty fun.” Participants are reminded to wear closed toe shoes and mittens. Winter Snowplay is for families with children ages 12 and under. In addition to over 20 tons of snow, there will be inflatable rides, face painters, winter games, a DJ dance party, and visits with Anna and Elsa from Disney’s Frozen, plus an opportunity to take priceless pictures with Santa Claus. “These events allow everyone to see and enjoy the unique attributes the Town of Davie has to offer which have contributed to it being the best place to live, work, play and learn,” shares James-Crichton. The Lighting of the Greens takes place on Saturday, December 7th from 6-8pm in front of Town Hall, at 6591 Orange Drive. Winter Snowplay is the following week, Saturday, December 14th, from 6-9pm at Bergeron Rodeo Grounds, 4271 Davie Road. For more information on holiday events in Davie call 954-797-1181.

Chiropractic? Why Not? “A Doctor’s Confession to West Broward”
Dear Friend,
write one for a lesser amount for chiropractic. When you bring in this article (by 12/31/19) you will receive my entire new patient exam for $55. That’s with x-rays, biomechanical exam, history and consultation…the whole ball of wax. This exam could cost you $250 elsewhere. The law says that I must tell you THAT YOU OR ANY OTHER PERSON RESPONSIBLE FOR PAYMENT HAS THE RIGHT TO REFUSE TO PAY, CANCEL PAYMENT, OR BE REIMBURSED FOR TREATMENT, WHICH IS PERFORMED AS A RESULT OF AND WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RESPONDING TO THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR DISCOUNTED, OR REDUCED FEE FOR SERVICE, EXAMINATION, OR TREATMENT.
I
want to give credit where credit is due. So, perhaps a confession can help clear the air so there’s no misunderstanding. Before I talk about my confession, though, let me say a few other things first. Let me start by explaining the photo in this letter. You know, when I meet people in town they usually say, “Oh, yeah, I know you, you’re Dr. Rick. I’ve seen your ad with that picture of you and your family.” Well, I’m the guy on the right. Twenty-five years ago something happened to me that changed my life forever. I was a junior in high school and I started getting migraines. I had suffered from intense headaches since childhood. Over the years, I consulted many medical doctors, and specialists. I went through all kinds of tests, MRIs, and treatments. I tried every drug in the market; our medicine cabinet looked like a hospital’s infirmary. And still, nothing helped. But there’s more… A friend of mine convinced me to give a chiropractor a try. The chiropractor examined me, took X-rays, and then “adjusted” my spine. The adjustment did not hurt; it actually felt good. And guess what…I started feeling so much better! From daily migraines, I went down to three a week, and then to once in a great while. That’s when I realized that I wanted to become a chiropractor and help others. That’s how it happened! It’s strange how life is, because now people come to see me with their migraines. They also come to me with their chronic pain, neck pain, shoulder/arm pain, whiplash from car accidents, backaches, ear infections, asthma, allergies, numbness in limbs, athletic injuries, carpal tunnel syndrome, just to name a few. Here’s what some of my patients had to say: “Due to an auto accident, I suffered from severe neck pain, vertigo and I could not raise my arm to comb my hair. Now I am symptom free with no medication and I can do everything I could not do before.” – E. Heaney, Hollywood, FL “Thanks to the DRX 9000 and the doctors, I no longer have chronic sciatic pain. It’s been a long time since I have taken pain medication.” – J. Walker, Miramar
Several times a day patients thank me for helping them with their health problems. But I can’t really take the credit. My confession is that I’ve never healed anyone of anything. What I do is perform a specific spinal adjustment to remove nerve pressure, and the body responds by healing itself. We get tremendous results. It’s as simple as that! Forty-five million Americans no longer have health insurance, and those who do have found that their benefits have been greatly reduced. That’s where chiropractic comes in. I have a significantly lower fee plan so that more people are able to afford the care they need. An entire week of care in my office costs what you could pay for one visit elsewhere. Another way to save…studies show that chiropractic can double your immune capacity, naturally and without drugs. The immune system fights colds, the flu, and other ailments. So you may not be running off to the doctor as much. Studies show that people actually pay less for their long-term overall health care expenses if they are seeing a chiropractor. You benefit from an amazing offer. Look, it shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg to correct your health. You are going to write a check to someone for your health care expenses, you may as well
Great care at a great fee…Please, I hope that there’s no misunderstanding about quality of care just because I have a lower exam fee. You’ll get great care at a great fee. My qualifications…I’m a graduate of Life College and have been practicing for over 10 years. I’ve been entrusted to take care of tiny babies to pro athletes that you may know. I am constantly going to seminars and updating my knowledge so I can give my patients the latest information and techniques of my profession. My assistants are Annie and Bianca – really great people. Bear Hugs Needed! BY BEVERLY PERKINS
A
lthough it’s the most festive time of the year, some are not so fortunate to be celebrating the season surrounded with family and friends. In fact, many individuals are in the hospital not able to celebrate at all. Plantation resident Cristina Pudwell recognized this when she was volunteering at the Broward Health Medical Center (BHMC). The long-time volunteer decided she wanted to do something for these patients. So, she started collecting new stuffed animals to distribute on Christmas morning. It brought such joy to those hospitalized that she carried on the project for five years. The compassionate soul has been volunteering at Westside Regional Medical Center (WRMC) for the last three years and wants to start her “Beary Special” tradition on their campus. “I started delivering bears to hospital patients on Christmas Day after my husband passed away. The holidays can be very difficult when you lose someone, and they can be very lonely if you are hospitalized,” explained Pudwell. “So often, elderly patients are alone in the hospital and I found that delivering the stuffed bears and animals cheered us both up. People tend to think of stuffed animals as just being for kids, but the truth is, the elderly love them too. I have seen grown men tear up when I have given them a bear.” Currently, Pudwell volunteers at the Westside Regional Medical Center gift shop each week and whenever the hospital needs extra assistance. For the last six years, she has logged over 2,000 volunteer hours at BHMC alone and countless hours at WRMC and other area hospitals. “The Christmas Day Bear Deliveries are a special project. If anyone wants

to donate new stuffed animals, that would be great. I will deliver them to all of the patients at Westside Regional Medical Center which could be as many as 250 people,” added Pudwell. “Being a Plantation resident. I like to serve the seniors in the community. At this hospital a great number of patients are seniors and I hope that we can collect enough stuffed animals to make every patient’s day a little brighter.” n If interested, please drop off new stuffed animals to the gift shop. Westside Regional Medical Center is located at 8201 W. Broward Blvd., Plantation, 33324.

Facts and the Ongoing Search for a Cure
Dr. Ricardo Castaneda is the Director of Clinical Research and Business Development at Miami Jewish Health, which is the newest State-designated Memory Disorder Clinic in South Florida.
Many times, the terminology used by clinicians can be difficult for patients and their families to understand, especially when it comes to how we describe the diseases that can afflict our aging brains. Even though memory disorders may present with very similar symptoms, it is important to understand their differences.

BSO Safety Tips to Keep your Holiday Season Merry and Bright BY STACEY BOMSER
T
he holiday season is upon us and sadly this is also peak season for thieves. The Broward Sheriff’s Office is offering some simple safety tips to keep in mind to keep you and your possessions safe while you are shopping or traveling. Crime Prevention Specialist Deputy Danielle Quinones says when out shopping be aware of your surroundings. She recommends parking in well-lit areas at night. “Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or carrying large amounts of cash and multiple credit cards; only carry what is necessary.” Just as you don’t want to become a crime victim, you don’t want your car to either. “Always keep your vehicle locked and do not store shopping bags inside,” cautions Deputy Quinones. “Thieves are watching mall parking lots and shopping plazas for shoppers that place their purchased merchandise inside their vehicles before heading to their next location. If possible, bring your shopping bags with you or drop them off at home, before heading out again.” If your holiday shopping involves a purchase from Craigslist, eBay, Letgo, or another online classified ad website, consider completing your transaction at the BSO Cooper City District Office (10580 Stirling
Rd, Hollywood, FL 33026). It is a Safe Transaction Zone designed to help deter thefts and robberies. “Always be sure to ask questions before buying or selling an item. Trust your instincts!” warns Deputy Quinones. “And if you’re shopping online, only shop on secure sites. Pay with a credit card, not using your bank account; you’ll get better liability protection. Always check your statements for unauthorized transactions.” The holiday season is a time many residents travel. Deputy Quinones offers the following tips to secure your home before leaving for vacation: ▸ Maintain regular lawn maintenance while you are away. Don’t let your grass grow like a jungle! If burglars are staking out houses, they’ll notice these little things. ▸ Put a hold on your mail and newspapers or have a trusted friend, neighbor or family member stop by to collect these items. Having a full mailbox is a dead giveaway that you are not home. Don’t forget to remind them to pick up packages and deliveries by the front door. ▸ If possible, leave a vehicle in the driveway. Have a neighbor park his/her vehicle there to give bur-

glars the impression someone is home. ▸ Keep a low profile on social media. Do not post/ broadcast that you are on vacation or away. ▸ Keep outdoor lights on during the evening/overnight hours. Indoor lights can be set with timers. Lighting can give the impression that someone is home and possibly deter those ‘unwanted’ guests. ▸ Do not store garage remotes inside vehicles that are left behind while you are on vacation. Install a padlock on the interior of your garage. ▸ Finally, take advantage of the free BSO Home Watch Program. A deputy will check your home for signs of break-ins or suspicious activity while you are out of town. You can pick-up a form at any BSO District Office.

THE DONOWAY CENTER NEW HOPE FOR PANCREATIC CANCER PATIENTS Patients diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer have few treatment options. However, a new procedure called Irreversible Electroporation or IRE for short has changed that for many patients who are seeing a doubling and tripling of their life expectancies. Dr. Robert Donoway, who has one of the largest International experiences for performing this procedure on the pancreas and liver is a Hollywood based, Sloan Kettering trained Pancreatic Surgical Oncologist, and former medical director of two of the local cancer programs remains among a very small handful of Pancreatic surgeons who perform the procedure which is done in the operating room as an outpatient.
Robert B. Donoway, M.D., F.A.C.S., F.S.S.O. Diplomate American Board of Surgery Diplomate, Society of Surgical Oncology Former Medical Director Memorial Cancer Center Medical Director, Atlas Oncology: Institute for Pancreatic Cancer IRE/NanoKnife Ablation
During the procedure, Dr. Donoway places fine needle probes under direct ultrasound guidance into and around the pancreatic tumor while carefully avoiding critical structures. High voltage current up to 3000 volts is then delivered in 90-microsecond pulses synchronized with the patient’s heart rhythm to avoid any cardiac problems. The pulses destroy the cancer cell membranes which then causes the tumor to die and be absorbed by the body. The average procedure lasts approximately 1-2 hours and the patients may be discharged the following day. A brief recovery means the patient can start chemotherapy and radiation that much sooner. Dr. Donoway is participating in several clinical studies identifying the best chemotherapy and immunotherapies to be used along with IRE. Dr. Donoway states, “The results so far have been very encouraging and we have begun using it for other select cancers. The longest survivors are now out over 5 years and without evidence of cancer recurrence. In the past, without IRE they would have been likely to have only lived a year and so this technique opens the whole new avenue for treating those eligible patients in a more targeted fashion.”

The Magic Leap One device may look like a cool pair of sunglasses but it is a powerful headset computer that allows users to experience their own virtual worlds in combination with the real world. It makes the unreal feel real.
30 DECEMBER 2019 | OUR CITY DAVIE | OURCITYMEDIA.COM
The spatial computing headsets let users see and interact with digital (virtual) content in the real world. This headset computer is a portal into worlds within our world. For teachers, the possibilities are endless, such as bringing dinosaurs to life, immersing students in art and music, virtually flying next to an astronaut, taking a virtual field trip for whale watching, and much more, all without leaving the classroom. This virtual world exposure is being incorporated into students’ curriculum to expand high school educational experiences and increase engagement. An agreement, approved by the Broward County School Board in October, equips the District with a total of 90 Magic Leap One devices. Of the 90, the Florida Panthers Foundation is donating 25, Magic Leap is supplying five and the remainder are being purchased by the District. Magic Leap will also provide teachers with professional development to help incorporate these devices into their instruction.
They will also be offering mentorship opportunities for high school students. “We are excited and grateful for our new relationship with Magic Leap and the Florida Panthers Foundation. It provides our students with opportunities to learn and work with cutting-edge technology,” said Superintendent Robert W. Runcie. “We’re bringing the future into the classroom to inspire and engage our students. It’s through the support of our local businesses and organizations that we are able to continually innovate and provide our students with world-class educational experiences.”

Got Horse Flies? These Girl Scouts Can Help! BY JON DUKA
T
wo Davie Cadette Girl Scouts completed one awesome Silver Award project benefitting the city’s horse population. Cadette Girl Scouts Vanessa and Sophia from Troop 11023 worked with local nonprofit Peaceful Ridge Rescue in order to come up with a way to resolve their horsefly problem. They created and installed reusable horsefly traps help control horseflies at the Horse rescue. Peaceful Ridge Rescue, Davie, Florida, is a NonProfit Organization that provides much needed medical and dental care, rehabilitation, and adoption services for rescued horses. With horses come horse flies and these two girls sought to find a solution to reduce these pesky pests and give relief to these “bugged” horses. The girls worked together to research and build 22 reusable insect traps along with a support system that would ensure the traps stay upright. Focusing on sustainability, Vanessa and Sophia demonstrated to volunteers at the ranch how to clean the traps so they can be used again. The Girl Scouts of Southeast Florida held their first Silver Award Showcase honoring the 2019 class of Silver Award Girl Scouts. 76 of the 137 Girl
Scouts who earned the prestigious award this year are Broward County residents. The Broward girls completed 28 different projects benefiting the community The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award that can be earned by Girl Scout Cadettes in grades 6-8. Individuals and small groups of girls who design and complete an approved project
with a minimum of 50 logged hours are eligible to receive the award. In order to earn the award, Cadettes must flex their leadership muscles by doing research and taking action on issues of their choice, all while creating positive change. The projects must fulfill a need in the community, create change, and be sustainable with long-term possibilities.

The Elusive Stress Fracture in the Runner BY DR MICHAEL M. COHEN, DPM, FACFAS
O
veruse running injuries occur when training schedules call for ramping up mileage or intensity in time for competition. Too often, runners forget that the sport is not a passive but violent one, as each foot strike results in an impact equivalent to three or four times their body weight. Exuberant training tips the balance in favor of injury. Despite the best intentions of the coach or athlete, overtraining leads to the inability to recover properly and results in injury such as a stress reaction or stress fracture. A stress reaction refers to swelling in bone which may later develop into a stress fracture, a small break in the bone. Stress injuries present with an insidious onset of pain which at times is confused with muscle soreness or tendinitis. Stress reactions and stress fractures represent fatigue failure injuries of bone. X-rays are typically negative in the early stages of injury and better recognized with bone scans or MRI which are very sensitive. As the condition develops, heat, swelling and pain eventually cause the athlete to limp. X-rays may be conclusive in this stage as a fracture line may now be visible. Not all stress fractures are the same. Stress fractures are generally classified into two types: low risk fractures, those that heal well, and high risk fractures, those which do not heal well. The designation of these two terms are essentially based on their location. How do you treat a stress fracture? Treatment for a stress fracture focuses on its intrinsic and extrinsic causes. Intrinsic factors include: Biomechanical (body type, foot type, inherent weakness and flexibility, and running technique); Nutritional (insufficient intake of protein,
calcium and vitamin D); and Hormonal (the most notable of which being estrogen. Female athletes with low bone mass have a higher predilection for certain stress fractures). Extrinsic factors consist of training errors and improper equipment. This includes but is not limited to the influences of terrain, running form and improper running shoes. An individualized developmental plan for returning to play should take these factors into consideration. The strategy may require decreasing volume and intensity of activity, equipment changes, dietary modifications, a medical workup, changes in running technique, and cross training. High risk stress fractures lead to frequent complications such as poor healing, non-healing, and at times re-fracturing of a healed fracture. This scenario is very frustrating and at times may lead some to abandon the sport. The immediate treatment for a high risk stress fracture requires halting the progression and avoiding long-term complications. Athletes with a high risk stress fracture are advised to discontinue impact immediately. Unfortunately, with these types of fractures, prolonged weight bearing restrictions and operative management are often treatments of choice. Your 2020 Resolutions BY BRUCE IDEN, ESQUIRE s the holidays approach and 2019 comes to a close, we naturally begin to think ahead to resolutions intended to change habits, improve our health or make things better for ourselves and our families. Resolutions are simply promises we make to ourselves. Perhaps your new year’s resolutions include walking 10,000+ steps each day, eating a cleaner diet or spending more time with your children. Whatever your resolutions may be, consider adding to your list an important one: protecting your loved ones. Let’s look at some basic questions and see if you can answer the following: Who will take care of me if I can’t take care of myself? Do I have adequate insurance? Is there a clear successor to manage my financial and business affairs? Are my personal wishes set forth in writing so they are known and accessible when needed? After I am gone, how will my family and loved ones manage the debts, taxes and other legal obligations I leave behind? Have I created a way to reach important family and financial goals? Who will take over my business if I am disabled or gone? What can I do to increase the probability that my business will survive after me? Who will care for my young children if my spouse and I cannot? What financial protection and instructions have I left for their care? When and how will my spouse, children, and other loved ones receive their inheritance? How can I be sure they receive their gifts in a manner which maximizes use and enjoyment but protects against creditors, predators or their own possible fiscal mismanagement?

Thinking about these matters can be absolutely overwhelming. But because we care about our families we are obligated to raise these tough questions and explore the answers. As spouses, we want to provide the resources and safeguards to make our loved ones’ futures more secure. As parents, we want our children to have a happy and secure life, especially if that life does not include us. Why not resolve to start the process of caring for your family should something happen to you? The ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu wisely said, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” Your first step is to meet with a qualified estate planning attorney to design and put into place a plan which will ensure that these are promises you can keep. If you have already done your estate planning, good for you! Please also make a habit of reviewing your plan, including beneficiary designations for insurance policies, retirement accounts, and 401(k) plans. Changes in your financial situation, family circumstances and the law may make the revision and updating of your estate plan essential. Life can change in an instant. What are you waiting for? REAL ESTATE
Still Renting? Say it isn’t so...
Essentials Spa Opens It’s Doors Davie Mayor Judy Paul, other city officials, various Davie, Cooper City & Southwest Ranches Chamber of Commerce members and friends joined Keith and Kristi, owners of Essential Spa, for a Grand Opening Ribbon Cutting of their spa.
BY ZONA HORTON Believe it or not, I still know people who continue to rent year after year. The money they could have saved through equity by owning their own home does not exist. When you pay off your mortgage as you age, you protect your retirement. Otherwise, you are paying rent for the rest of your life and possibly working menial jobs to meet your monthly rent when you could be traveling to see the grandchildren. To a Real Estate professional who has been in this business for over 34 years, long-term renting does NOT make any sense. Here are a few core reasons you should buy...and buy NOW. 1. Prices Will Continue to Rise. The experts show home prices have appreciated by 3.6% over the last 12 months. Nationally, prices will continue to increase at a rate of 5.8% over the next year. In Davie and Cooper City, home prices have risen 17.9% compared to last year. Inventory is down 55% over the past year. Trends show that this will continue; therefore, prices will rise and choices remain few. The “bubble” is over – and those who chose to weather the bubble and remain in their homes are coming out on top. Those who chose to bail and rent may still be renting out of fear. A client of mine had purchased her home in 2003 for $232,000; and when her home value sank under the market value (around 2007), she strategically requested and was granted a loan modification. Today she enjoys equity to the tune of $189,000 and a 3.75% fixed mortgage rate for the remainder of the loan. Had she walked away from her home during the bubble scare, she would have lost her equity and the possibility of investing in an upgraded home in the future. Furthermore, she would have thrown money away on rent – as rent prices continued to rise higher than home prices. The rock bottom for home prices has come and gone. Home values will continue to appreciate for years. 2. Mortgage Interest Rates Are Projected to Increase Next Year According to Steve Harney, Real Estate prognosticator, the Primary Mortgage Market Survey from Freddie Mac indicates that interest rates for a 30-year mortgage have recently hovered just above 3.5%. Low-interest rates increase purchasing power; however, most experts predict rates will rise over the next 12 months. The Mortgage Bankers Association, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, and the National Association of Realtors are in unison, projecting that rates will increase by this time next year. 3. You Are Paying a Mortgage – even when you RENT. Unless you are fortunate to live rent-free, you are paying a mortgage – either yours or that of your landlord. Your mortgage payment is a form of ‘forced savings’ that allows you to access funds later in life. The ‘cost’ of a home is determined by two major components: The price of the home and the current mortgage rate. It appears both are on the rise. Buying a home sooner rather than later could lead to substantial savings. Buy NOW. Make 2020 your year to stop renting OR start looking to purchase that home you really want. Can Chewing Gum Prevent Cavities in Your Child? BY DR. MARTA GROSMAN ver the last 5 decades, fluoride has been added to community water supplies across the country. As a result, we have seen a 50% reduction of cavities in these communities as well as a 50% reduction in dental healthcare costs for children. The numbers are even higher when its use is combined with proper diet, oral hygiene techniques, and use of topical fluorides. Still, the dental community searches for other methods of reducing the incidence of “caries” (cavities). Such a finding would be most helpful to those unable or unwilling to make use of fluoride. One of the more promising substances is xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute derived from agricultural products. It has been around since the 1960’s but has not been tested for use in humans for the purpose of oral health until the 1990’s. Most of the studies use chewing gum as the delivery system of choice. Optimal results are gained with three daily uses. This dosing achieves a reduction in plaque formation, reduces acid production, and interferes with the production of the specific bacteria which initiate cavity formation. Cumulatively, these attributes result in cavity reduction. What seems most promising is the use of xylitol by new parents to reduce cavity formation in their newborns. Babies are not born with the bacteria which cause cavities. These bacteria are naturally transmitted to the mouth of a child by a parent or caregiver. This usually occurs through everyday contact such as sharing of food or blowing on a hot spoon. The use of xylitol has been shown to delay the transmission of some of the most deleterious bacteria and resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities for these children.

In one particular study, xylitol chewing by mothers beginning three months after the delivery of a child for a period of two years resulted in a decreased incidence of cavities in the children till an average age of six years. Of course with such positive results many new xylitol products have been launched into the marketplace. Companies are manufacturing a number of products such as mints, mouthwash, and toothpaste. However, the only method of delivery clinically proven to have these effects is chewing gum. Personally, I can’t wait to bite into the first xylitol infused ice cream sundae!!!!!!! Drs. BY EVAN BARON ost people think of the holiday season with gleeful anticipation of time with family. For couples who have been through a divorce, the holiday season can often be a very stressful time. This stress can also be felt by the children of a divorced couple. It is not uncommon for holiday visitation issues to surface during this time of year. Hopefully, the parties’ settlement agreement or Parenting Plan is specific as to time sharing. Over the course of approximately 35 years of practice, my clients have experienced many issues concerning holiday visitation. The biggest obstacle to solving an issue in court during this time of year is the reality that court time is very difficult to schedule. Last minute issues will usually will not be addressed. Of course, the parties are always able to try and work things out on their own or with the help of attorneys and mediators. I would certainly suggest not waiting until the “last minute” to address any concerns. The best way to ensure there will be no conflicts during the holidays is to anticipate potential problems ahead of time and address them in the marital settlement agreement and/or Parenting Plan. The more specific your agreement is, the more likely you will not experience conflicts along the way. For couples with minor children Parenting Plans have been mandatory. These Parenting Plans are designed to be very specific as to time sharing in an effort to head off any trouble in years to come. Unfortunately, these Parenting Plans were not used prior to the latter part of 2008 and therefore many existing agreements do not include this provision. I believe the most important thing to remember is that any time-sharing arrangement should always keep the best interest of the children as a priority. Children want to spend time with both parents and this is especially true during the holidays. They also want to be a part of any family gatherings. Sometimes that is not always possible, but advanced planning may be able to achieve this goal. Often parents divide the entire winter break in half, with Christmas day being the “exchange day”. As an example, in odd-numbered years such as 2015 perhaps Dad has the children from the day school ends until noon Christmas Day. Mom will pick up the kids and keep them until school begins again. Next year they can reverse the schedule. In some cultures, Christmas Eve is more of a celebration, so perhaps one parent can celebrate every Christmas Eve and the other Christmas Day. Also remember that “gift giving” is not a competition, with the winner being the parent who spends the most money. Often times the finances of each parent may not be the same and one must buy gifts within his/her budget. For a parent to embarrass the other by purchasing a more expensive and lavish gift is only going to lead to hard feelings and potential problems. Hopefully, the parents can discuss this issue beforehand and plan together. Often parents wish to visit family out of town. Consider the feelings of your former spouse and the children in the planning such a trip. Children have the need to be with extended family during the Holidays. Perhaps holiday trips out of town can be rotated from year to year between parents. Mom and Dad can certainly make the holiday season a joyous time for their children or they can focus on themselves and make it a time that everyone would like to forget. If you need any further questions answered, please feel free to contact my office. n The law firm of Evan H. Baron and Associates is located at 1655 North Commerce Parkway, Suite 201, in Weston. If you have any questions concerning this issue or any other family law matter, call the office at 954-385-9160.
HEALTH AND WELLNESS
Staying up Late on Weekends is Detrimental to Your Health BY DR. JEAN-CLAUDE NERETTE & STEPHANIE MUNIZ, ARNP
I
f you take advantage of your weekends by going to bed late and sleeping in, you may be jeopardizing your health without even knowing it. This common practice, known as “social jet lag,” has become an important circadian marker for health outcomes. Those individuals who are habitually following disordered sleep patterns by going to bed late on the weekends and waking up much later than they do during the week are more likely to experience sleepiness, fatigue, worse mood and poorer health overall, according to research. How is that possible? If you think about traditional jet lag, you may realize fatigue and sleepiness are common symptoms because your sleep schedule is disrupted by long hours of travel and time-change. It could take a couple of hours or days for your body to adjust. Now imagine doing that every week! Even though you may not travel every weekend, going to bed late and waking up later than usual, puts your body through the same experience by disrupting your sleep pattern. What’s even worse is that for many people, this is a weekend habit, so they are literally jetlagged every week. Putting your body through those symptoms on a consistent basis, whether it be because you are out drinking or even at home watching TV, will definitely have you feeling less than ideal and will take a toll on your health. Keep in mind sleep duration does not matter when it comes to the negative adverse effects of social jet lag. Sleeping more hours on the weekend is not a way to catch-up for missed sleep during the week and it will not help you recover from going to bed late as much as setting a consistent sleep schedule. In fact, each hour of social jet lag may increase a person’s likelihood of heart disease by 11 percent. Sleep is crucial for recovery. This is the time your body uses cells to repair damage; it also creates antibodies to fight infections and keep you healthy. In addition, sleep time provides for new learning and memory pathways to be formed in the brain. There are numerous studies linking lack of sleep to undesirable outcomes. Because sleep plays a significant role in our health, experts recommend adults get a minimum of seven to eight hours every single night as consistency is better than trying to catch up at the end of the week. The most important goal in functional medicine is the optimization of health and balance, which cannot happen without adequate sleep. ASK THE SHERIFF
A Year of Progress & Transformation BY SHERIFF GREGORY TONY hat a year it has been for the Broward Sheriff’s Office. When I took command of this organization, I pledged to put public safety first. I am proud of the improvements we have made and the initiatives we have implemented toward our mission of providing high quality services to Broward County. Here are some highlights: SCHOOL SAFETY: We have worked diligently to improve the safety of our schools. We have launched the Real Time Crime Center, which gives us the ability to monitor surveillance cameras across all Broward County Public Schools. We have expanded the Guardian Program and developed an active shooter training curriculum and video. We have provided Bleeding Control Kits to all road patrol deputies as well as public schools. TRAINING AND PREPAREDNESS: Our training division and course curriculums reflect today’s public safety priorities. We have reallocated one million dollars to increase the manpower of our training division. We are the first agency in the state of Florida to have a nationallycertified active shooter training unit, and in collaboration with our federal partners, we have certified instructors in Active Shooter and Basic Tactical

Medical Response, FBI ALERRT Program and Incident Command Structure. We have invested $500,000 toward enhanced Racial Equity and Cultural Diversity Training and increased the number of deputies trained in crisis intervention. For the first time in BSO history, construction for a state-of-the-art Regional Training Center is underway which will provide for more intensive, frequent training to address today’s public safety challenges. PROMOTIONS: Our agency’s leaders are experienced and are a better reflection of the communities we serve. I understand firsthand the importance of diversity in public safety. We have the most diverse command staff in the agency’s 104-year history. I believe experience is a priceless resource, and I have promoted more than 200 employees from within the organization. COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS: We have implemented progressive community policing initiatives and are listening to your needs. Our countywide Neighborhood Support Team is designed to make law enforcement more visible and reduce fear in our communities. We are focusing on collaboration and engagement from all community stakeholders to unify efforts to meet community needs. LAW ENFORCEMENT TRUST FUND (LETF): Accountability and distribution of funds will be more fair and equitable.
We have increased the opportunity and expansion of funds provided to support nonprofit organizations through the LETF. INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE: We have expanded youth programs and opportunities to further develop the ambition of our young people. We have established the Bureau of Recruiting to ensure we are hiring the most diverse, qualified personnel. We have developed the BSO Legacy Program, which provides scholarships, sponsorships and internship opportunities. The program’s objective focuses on helping minority students reach their goal of a career in public safety. I am proud of the work we have accomplished thus far and am excited about what’s to come. The men and women of this organization are committed to their duties and embrace their responsibilities as public safety professionals. As your sheriff, I am humbled at the outpouring of support from all of Broward’s communities. As we move forward, we will continue to listen to your needs, demonstrate transparency and maintain accountability while never losing sight of our public safety mission. From our BSO family to yours, have a happy, healthy and safe holiday season. SUCCESS = REWARD ■ You can stay connected by following the sheriff on Twitter @ BrowardSheriff or emailing him directly at ask_the_sheriff@sheriff.org.
ASK THE MAYOR
Davie Update BY MAYOR JUDY PAUL s you know, the town has had continued discussions with the City of Sunrise regarding the water and sewer surtax imposed on Davie residents by the Sunrise Utilities. Though this dialogue hasn’t reached a specific conclusion, I want to inform you that Davie residents on Sunrise Utilities will not be receiving a Consumer Price Index (CPI) increase in Fiscal Year 2020. Town of Davie residents being served by the City of Sunrise Utility will be spared an increase related to the Consumer Price Index for Fiscal Year 2020. The City of Sunrise Price Index Ordinance provides that: “Beginning on October 1, 2008, and on each October 1st thereafter, the water and sewer rates and base facility charges shall be adjusted to reflect the cost of doing business, measured by fluctuation in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) - All Urban Consumers, Water and Sewerage Maintenance, as published by the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics or its successor agency based on the percentage change in the CPI from the previous June to June of the year in which the adjustment is effected.” Sunrise has had the ability to annually adjust water and sewer rates by an annual index for a number of years and has consistently applied such an index. As the City of Sunrise is considered to be in a favorable financial position and are still evaluating their long-term capital needs as part of their utility master plan, they are suspending the price index for the Fiscal Year 2020. The price index adjustment savings are estimated to be 3.27%. Although this is very much appreciated we are still monitoring opportunities to address the State authorized surcharge. The City of Sunrise has foregone this increase, anticipated to be 3.27%, for their water and sewer rates and base facility charges system-wide. “FEMA has approved $8,616,591 for the State of Florida to help the Town of Davie defray the costs of debris removal for Hurricane Irma under FEMA’s Public Assistance Program. FEMA funds will reimburse the town for the collection, reduction, disposal and site management of debris within Davie between Sept. 18 and Dec. 16, 2017, following the September 2017 storm. During that time period, town workers and contractors gathered and hauled away 711,546 cubic yards of vegetative debris and 50,000 cubic yards of construction/demolition debris from roads and public property. They also removed 190 damaged trees and 3,910 hanging limbs that were determined to pose a threat to public health and safety.” Hopefully, the check is in the mail so that we can replace the funds expended from our emergency reserve fund. Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states and communities each year. The results determine how many seats in Congress each state gets. It’s mandated by the U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 2: The U.S. has counted its population every 10 years since 1790. When you respond to the census, your answers are kept anonymous. They are used only to produce statistics. The U.S. Census Bureau is bound by law to protect your answers and keep them strictly confidential. The law ensures that your private information is never published and that your answers cannot be used against you by any government agency or court. Your help matters. Getting a complete and accurate count in 2020 requires everyone’s help. And there are many ways for individuals, businesses, community organizations, and others to play a role.
