Small acts of kindness can be contagious. A few years ago, when our kids were in Elementary School, Christy dropped them off at school and decided to go to the drive-through at a coffee shop. When she got to the window, with her credit card in hand, the barista told her that the driver of the car in front of her had already paid for her order. Christy looked up, but the other car had already sped off, having accomplished their covert act of goodwill. Christy decided to pay the kindness forward, as did the car behind her. A chain reaction of friendly gestures began as the next car carried on giving the gift of a cup of cof fee as well.

We visited Deerfield Beach this weekend. We saw a mother, who was busy with twin young girls while her older son played in the surf. The tide slowly carried the boy down the beach, as it tends to do. The mother tried to get his attention over the sound of the surf to no avail. Seeing the distress on the mom’s face, a couple offered to watch the girls while she went to retrieve her son. All was well when they returned. We were grateful the kind couple was there to help the mom.

These simple gestures of doing good remind us of President George H. W. Bush’s 1989 inaugural address. He spoke about a thousand points of light. Individuals across the country do “good deeds” for the betterment of all.

Let’s make this holiday season a time when we all look out for each other. Be one of those points of light with an act of kindness.

Sincerely,

Christy & Terry Jaillet OUR CITY MEDIA PUBLISHERS Be a Point of Light This Holiday Season ■ PUBLISHER’S PAGE PEMBROKE PINES 12301 Taft St, Suite 100 Pembroke Pines, FL 954-962-1180 WESTON 2229 N. Providing a Higher Level of Care & Education

As parents, we always want the best for our children. Ask any parent what they want in a preschool for their children, you will always hear three things: safety, learning, and emotional development. The Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool has taken those priorities to heart. The teachers and staff at Tree of Life are committed to providing students with the highest level of care and education.

The eight-time Best of Weston winner and 2022 Best of Davie winner offers a unique, high-level learning curriculum with programs for infants through pre-kindergarten. They offer an innovative dual-core curriculum that includes immersive bilingual teaching. In fact, more Tree of Life students graduate reading at the firstgrade level than any other area preschool.

Dual-Core Curriculum

Tree of Life Christian Academy uses two curriculums: the ABEKA curriculum and the HIGH SCOPE curriculum while immersing the children in the Spanish language. They believe a successful education is centered on the curriculum used to teach kids. The ABEKA curriculum has been used internationally for over 50 years. Scholastically, reading is half the battle for preschoolers. ABEKA has a six-step program to teach reading skills by using a phonetic approach.

The HIGH SCOPE Preschool Curriculum is the component of the HIGH SCOPE researched-based system of education. The curriculum has a set of teaching practices,

content areas, assessment tools, and a training model to help teachers use the curriculum to support children’s development. The curriculum is based on Active Learning.

Active Learning is direct, hands-on experi ences with people, objects, events, and ideas. Children are encouraged to “construct” their own knowledge by pursuing their personal interests and goals, guided by trained adults who understand the importance of learning areas for children in the preschool years.

Child Safety

The owners of Tree of Life Christian Academy are dedicated to the safety of every child who attends the school. This includes physical safety, maintaining a sanitary school environment, and ensuring that students’ emotional needs are met. The school employs a full-time armed security guard, has bullet proof entry doors, and offers an on-site clinic. Teachers are trained in CPR and first-aid. They not only have a clinic, but also a nurse on staff. Take a tour today to learn about all of the amazing things they offer, making this a very special and safe preschool. In the times we are living in, this Preschool offers very important features, which is rarely seen.

Engaging Classrooms & Facilities

The school’s warm and inviting classrooms are filled with age-appropriate materials to help stimulate creativity in each child. Learning

centers include blocks, dramatic play, house keeping, manipulatives, art, library, science, sand & water station, music and movement as well as writing.

Committed Teachers & Staff

Tree of Life’s highly trained and certified teachers motivate, encourage, and create a thirst for learning by building on each child’s individual strengths, gifts, and talents. The school is equipped with the latest technology, a spacious indoor play area, several outdoor playgrounds, and offers organic & natural lunches every day.

As a Christian faith-based school, Tree of Life teaches moral and family values. Every student feels loved and valued every day they walk into this school.

Parents are invited to tour Tree of Life’s facil ities, meet with the school's staff, and speak with parents of existing students. After you do, you’ll know why they have been voted Best of Weston and Best of Davie by the readers of Our City. A Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool truly gives children a higher level of care & education.

▸ Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool is located at 4035 Embassy Drive N. in Cooper City & 1250 SW 160th Ave in Weston. To learn more or to schedule a school visit, call 954-440-0174 or visit www.treeoflifeacademy.com.

■ FEATURE STORY

At the Tree of Life Christian Academy Preschool in Weston, children are learning many of life’s lessons in a thriving, mod ern school. As Tree of Life approaches their one year anniversary, owners Gabriel and Marcy Buitrago are celebrating what they have accomplished while looking ahead to the future.

Tree of Life

“We feel like our formula for success is to be different than all the other preschools.

The

A Brand New Kindergarten

Remarkable Campus & Facilities

“My daughter in kindergarten is excelling in reading & writing, she loves learning and I know it’s because of Tree of Life. Their amazing school brings a balance of nurture and structure, giving students the best preparation for school years ahead! We are blessed to have Tree of Life in our community!”

That magic will expand to Tree of Life’s brand-new kindergarten program. Their kindergarten will be in a separate room that will not be attached to the preschool, and they are looking to reach a 9-1 stu dent-to-teacher ratio. With kindergarten starting on August 18th, Tree of Life has al ready reached fifty percent enrollment, and placements will be filling up quickly. There are already wait lists for two- and three-year olds who want to enroll in those programs, and administrators are confident that kin dergarten will also prove quite popular. Kindergarten will be open to all children, regardless of whether or not they attended preschool at Tree of Life.

Tree of Life’s campus has been thoughtful ly laid out to make the most of the 13,000 square foot building. The classrooms sur round an indoor play area where a cus tom-made wooden Tree of Life serves as the hub. Every classroom has their own private bathroom and drinking fountain, as well as an exit to the playground. Students can take advantage of a bilingual curriculum, learn sign language, and utilize the latest comput

ers and iPads. All of these features are pro tected by a state-of-the-art security system, which includes security cameras throughout and two separate passcode-protected doors one must pass through before entering the

Signature Grand Ghoul Raises $50,000 +

The 19th Annual Signature Grand Ghoul, held at the Signature Grand in Davie, raised more than $50,000 to benefit the Broward Health Foundation.

Guests returned after a two-year hiatus dressed in stylish costumes. They enjoyed a grand ballroom transformed into a haunted mansion featuring local celebrities, former athletes, music, lavish buffets, specialty cocktails and an open bar.

“We are grateful to have joined with Signature Grand for this event,” said Scott Ford, president of the Broward Health Foundation. “We were overjoyed to see our guests wearing their spooktacular costumes while helping us raise funds to provide high-quality healthcare in Broward County.”

The winners of the costume contest were Ursula from the Little Mermaid in first place, Jedi Warrior in second place and Ted Lasso in third place.

More than 500 people attended the event, which was hosted by The Signature Grand, and emceed by former Miami Dolphins player O.J. McDuffie and Seth Levit, his co-host of the Miami Dolphins podcast “The Fish Tank.”

The donations will further enhance patient care and services at Broward Health.

School Choice Applications Accepted Through February 3, 2023

School-aged children living in Broward County are assigned to a school based on their home address and grade level. Parents can, however, apply for their child to attend a school other than the one their child is assigned school. The period where parents can apply for their child to attend a different school, or the school choice application window, opens on December 1 and will be closed on February 3.

School Choice

By state law, students may apply to attend any public school that has not reached capacity, regardless of their home address. To determine which schools are accepting applications, Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) reviews enrollment data and projected students.

Parents may request a school that is accepting applications by complet ing a School Choice Application during the application window.

School Choice Applications are awarded using a computerized random selection process. If more seats at a school become available during the School Choice process, additional selections from the application pool will be made. There is no guarantee that a child’s application will be granted.

How to Apply

There are three alternative options avail

able for families. These options include Magnet Programs, Nova Schools, or a reassignment School. Parents can submit one application for each option per child. Applications must be submitted on BCPS’ website prior to February 3.

Parents will be notified if their child was selected on February 10 for NOVA, March 3 for Magnet schools and March 17-24 for reassignment. ▸ For more information on Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) School Choice pro gram or apply for an alternate school visit www.browardschools.com/schoolchoice

For many of us, estate planning is something we know we should do but often manage to postpone until some indefinite time in the future. But, putting off this part of your financial life could mean passing over an opportunity to preserve the lifestyle you’ve worked so hard to create and to dictate your legacy on your terms.

Why You Need an Estate Plan

The primary purpose of estate planning is to ensure that you control how your assets are distributed.

Estate planning is also about planning for unexpected events, such as physical and mental impairment, which may place a financial strain on your family.

A well-crafted estate plan is likely to have multiple goals: ▸

To protect your lifestyle ▸

To provide for your family and others, in cluding charitable organizations that are meaningful to you ▸

To control the distribution of your assets ▸

To minimize estate taxes

Your Estate Planning Checklist

Depending on your goals, you may need to consider different tools, resources, and strategies to help you develop an estate plan that reflects your priorities. Here are some important documents and services you may need to help protect you and your family in the event of disability:

A living will is a legal document containing your wishes regarding medical measures that might be taken to prolong your life in case of serious illness or injury.

A durable power of attorney for health care, also known as a health care proxy, appoints

someone you trust to make health care decisions on your behalf if you are unable to do so.

A durable power of attorney for financial matters gives someone legal authority to make financial decisions if you are unable to do so.

An inventory of important information includes information about your property, bank accounts, insurance policies, employee benefit plans, mortgages, and debts. It also includes your estate planning documents and beneficiary designation forms.

Disability insurance can help replace a portion of lost income if illness or injury prevents you from working.

Long-term care insurance can help to pay for the costs associated with disabilities caused by age and infirmity, such as nursing home care.

Other important documents and services help to protect your family and your legacy in the event of your death:

Life insurance can provide financial benefits for your named beneficiaries if you pass away.

Used strategically, life insurance can also help address other estate planning objectives, such as reducing the impact of estate taxes or charitable giving.

A will is a state-specific legal document that sets forth your wishes regarding the distribution of your property and the care of any minor children.

Trusts may be beneficial for a variety of life events and situations, including tax law changes, marriage, college savings, a child with special needs, serious illness, inheritance, and retirement planning.

The most difficult part of estate planning is

getting started. Once you begin, you will find estate planning is a positive and constructive way to put yourself in control of your legacy.

Need help taking the first step? Working with a Financial Advisor can help you bring all the elements of your estate plan together to help ensure that you have an integrated strategy in place to protect yourself and your family.

Mrs. Crab

Mr. & Mrs. Crab’s hand-held seafood integrates American country taste with traditional Szechuan spices to create a unique flavor. What makes Mr. & Mrs. Crab even more unique is the ability to create your very own customized seafood boil! After you’ve decided what types of seafood you would like to indulge yourself in, their chefs will have your food cooked to perfection and placed in specially designed seafood boil bags to be tossed in one of their mouthwatering sauces.

What are you waiting for? Embark on your seafood adventure today!

The Perfect Place for Holiday Parties

Mr. & Mrs. Crab has plenty of room for holiday parties of all sizes. When you go to the restaurant, it is all about fun! Diners eat the same shrimp, crab, or lobster that they might be served at a stuffy white-ta blecloth restaurant without worrying about making a mess. The seafood is seasoned perfectly and cocktails are always available. Be sure to call the restaurant to make your party reservation today!

Signature Cocktails

Mr. and Mrs. Crab offers a number of specials and Signature Drinks from the bar. We loved the Florida Hurricane, made with passionfruit, dark rum, orange, and lime. Our bartender offered a

number of unique creations that hit the right spot and got us ready for the incredible food, tossed in mouthwatering sauces.

Seafood is Only The Beginning

Mr. & Mrs. Crab offers seafood boil entrees. These delectable meals are steamed fresh in their kitchen, smothered in one of their signature sauces, and brought to your table sealed in a specially designed seafood boil bag on a platter. The bag is opened at the table, allowing diners to breathe in the incredible spicy aroma emanating from the piping hot sauce.

After dinner is served, it is time to get messy. Dining at Mr. & Mrs. Crab is typically, and most successfully done with your hands. The act or cracking open a perfectly seasoned crab leg and pulling out the juicy meat is a primal joy for diners of all ages. Don’t worry about splattering that new top, however. Prior to being served your server will bring a “bucket” with everything you need, including bibs, plastic gloves, cracking tools for the fish, and some wet wipes. Dining is definitely a hands-on activity and the bigger your mess, the happy the serving staff is, because they know you are enjoying your meal.

Let’s Be Together today at Mr. & Mrs. Crab.

COUNTDOWN TO A STRESS-FREE 2023

Estate planning can be an unsettling process, but it is a blueprint for "peace of mind." Everyone from Uber drivers to the Uber wealthy should have a plan in place. While many believe it is only for the elderly, your plan should be in place at any age. We want to protect our lives, our autonomy, and our future to enjoy the years to come worry-free. Here are 6 ways to enjoy a stress-free 2023!

6.- Complete Health Care Directives.

Unless your wishes are explicitly in writing and legally sufficient, doctors and hospitals are not required to follow your wishes. Medical personnel are not legally bound to listen to your loved ones, even if "they know what you would want." In fact, it is forbidden to speak to your loved ones without the necessary HIPAA Release in place. Ensure every required healthcare document, including a Health Care Surrogacy, is completed and readily available to your loved ones.

5.- Appoint a Durable Power of Attorney.

This is potentially your most important document. Your POA "Agent" is someone you would trust your life with … literally. While deciding who should be your POA, you must be comfortable with them handling all financial matters. You should get the help of an attorney, as the laws are constantly evolving and state-specific. In Florida, it must be witnessed, notarized, and have specific provisions initialed.

4.- Review any Will or Trust Over 5 Years or Sign a New One

Surprisingly, most Americans do not have a will. Under Florida law, if you do not execute a will, your assets will be distributed in Probate Court according to the Laws of Intestacy, which may be pricey and overwhelming. 1,001 things can go wrong without a Will and/or Revocable Living Trust. It must be legally sufficient to allow your property to pass without concern. Most importantly, YOU need to be comfortable with it.

3.-Make sure your Beneficiaries are up to date.

The number one reason an estate lands in probate is for assets missing a beneficiary. Sometimes a named beneficiary will pass before the account owner or is no longer a loved one. Recently Suntrust merged with Truist. I had a client whose beneficiary designations on her investment accounts, now held by Truist, were missing! Check each of your accounts annually.

2.- Remember your furry friends.

For many of us, our pets are considered part of the family. If something were to happen to you, who would you trust to take care of your fur baby? How will they pay for their care? Florida Law allows you to create a pet trust- Problem solved!

1.- Keep control of Digital Assets and Accounts.

More frequently, we conduct business online. What happens to online assets and accounts after you die or lose capacity? Create a list of your online accounts and digital devices with access information for your family.

It will be spring before we know it, and another year will pass without accomplishing your goals. Contact an Estate Planning attorney to help you reach these goals without stress! Remember, as with anything, start small, and you can check off these to-dos step by step.

ANKLE INJURIES IN YOUTH ATHLETES

arents should encour age their children to participate in sports, not only for the cardiovas cular benefits, but also to help develop attributes like self-discipline, teamwork and an appreciation for the importance of good health habits to carry throughout their lifetime. In children younger than ten, multi-sport participation is advised with a training emphasis on proper technique and coordination. It is commonly advised that sport specialization be delayed until the late teens; research shows that children who specialize too early are more likely to experience foot and ankle injuries.

In addition to proper fitting and supporting footwear, a dynamic warm-up specific to the sport being played is recommended for all ages in order to prevent injury. As the opposite of adults, children are more susceptible to growth plate injuries than injuries to tendons and ligaments. These growth plates typically do not finish closing until 15-18 in boys and 13-16 in girls. Many children suffer from torsional imbalances such as in-toe or out-toe, however,

Pthe majority of these children outgrow these conditions without medical treatment; see a foot and ankle specialist if your child is consistently tripping during activity.

Ankle Sprains - Typically seen more often in older youth athletes, younger athletes tend to also have associated growth plate injuries with ankle sprains. Immediate treatment is critical to healing and prevention of long-term ankle instability. See a foot and ankle specialist, immediately, for better long-term prognosis. Physical therapy to restore balance and strength is often necessary after offloading the injured ankle.

Fractures - If a child is unable to put weight on the injured foot after injury, it is recommended to see a foot and ankle specialist for an X-ray to rule out a fracture. If not severe, rest and immo bilization with a cast may likely be the treatment. More complicated injuries may require surgical correction for better long-term prognosis. Stress fractures are often seen in children whose total participation in sports activity is greater than 16 hours per week; it is recommended that a child’s total hours of organized sports per week should be less than or equal to the age in years.

Heel Pain - Also referred to as calcaneal

apophysitis, it is an inflammation of the growth plate in the heel usually caused by excessive usage, tight Achilles tendon, flat feet, poor fitting cleats or shoes, or blunt trauma. Commonly seen in sprinting sports, like soccer and baseball, because of the cleat patterns and also in bas ketball because of the force from coming down after a rebound. Usual treatment includes rest, immobilization, ice, heel lifts, orthotics, stretching and physical therapy.

Shin Splints – This is a very common overuse injury. The presence of a tight Achilles tendon can cause overuse and inflammation of the weaker dorsiflexion muscles in the front of the leg. In children with flatfeet and a tight Achilles, overuse of a muscle in the back inside of the leg can become inflamed as well. Treatment includes rest, ice, compression, physical therapy, stretching, strengthening exercises, and orthotics.

Would My Child Benefit from Sedation Dentistry? (

Part II

Last month’s editorial (Part 1) covered the

Thus, intravenous sedation is the most versatile and predictable technique used in the dental office. General anesthesia, practically speaking, pro vides for similar conveniences as intravenous sedation. However, general anesthesia must be performed in a hospital setting and is specifically used for patients who have a higher potential for airway obstruction.

When considering the use of sedation for your child, it is important to recognize that one form of sedation is not inherently better than another. Be open to all options and consider which is most appropriate for the individual patient and situation. The goal of proposed treatment should not only be the effective completion of needed dental work but more importantly doing so with a resultant positive attitude and safety of the child. This cannot be consistently achieved with a one size fits all approach.

BACK TO BUSINESS AT BSO!

WCheck our community events calendar on sheriff.org for dates and locations of upcoming events near you.

This increase makes us competitive with surrounding public safety call centers and helps recruit and retain these critical employees. If you have a passion to serve and want a rewarding career, visit us at jobs.sheriff.org or contact our Recruitment Unit at recruitmentunit@sheriff.org.

CLOSING CASES

hat a year it's been! As we turned the corner on the COVID-19 pandemic, the Broward Sheriff's Office (BSO) remained fully committed to our core mission of providing top-notch public safety services while continuing to create new and innovative programs and initiatives. We returned to hosting in-person community events, solving decade-old crimes, and improving critical training and educational opportunities for employees. Here are some of the highlights:

CONNECTING WITH THE COMMUNITY

After two years of limited in-person community interaction, BSO showed up in a big way. We hosted numerous important events, including our Shreda-thon and Operation Medicine Cabinet events, National Night Out, town halls, and other community-centered events. These opportunities continue to build mutual trust and understanding with those we serve.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS

We awarded 76 deserving communi ty-based non-profits a total of $930,000 in Law Enforcement Trust Funds (LETF). This was the most money given out in a single year under my leadership. These funds, which come from the forfeiture and seizure of contraband used in the commission of a crime, are given back to the community through organizations to further the mission of preventing crime and keeping our neighborhoods safe. To learn more about how your non-profit organization can apply for a future LETF grant, please visit sheriff.org and follow us on social media for future announcements on when applications are being accepted.

STRENGTHENING OUR 911 SYSTEM

Earlier this year, BSO succeeded in obtaining additional funding from the Broward County Commission to increase the salaries of our communications operators.

“Gone, but not forgotten” is the impetus behind BSO's dedicated Cold Case Unit. Formed in 2019, the unit offers increased attention to unsolved cases, and this year the unit had incredible successes. In one instance, we identified and criminally charged a man known as the Pillowcase Rapist, who was responsible for many sexual assaults in the 1980s. In another, the unit solved the 1994 rape and murder of an 89-year-old woman. We also launched an exclusive Cold Case video series to uncover possible new leads and bring more exposure to these investigations. I encourage you to take some time to view the series on the Broward Sheriff's Office YouTube channel: https://www.youtube. com/c/BrowardSheriffsOffice. If you have any information about these crimes, please contact Broward Crime Stoppers at (954) 493-TIPS(8477).

STAFF TRAINING AND EDUCATION

Training and education are paramount for operational preparedness and excellence

in service. In 2022, BSO partnered with local universities to expand higher edu cation opportunities for all personnel and increased participation in executive-level training courses. As sheriff, I must lead by example. This year, I was selected to participate in and completed the FBI's prestigious National Executive Institute Leadership Course. I am also currently pursuing my Ph.D. at Nova Southeastern University. As an organization, we are on a mission to become the most academically credentialed agency in the state.

This year, we finalized plans for BSO's state-of-the-art training center, broke ground, and construction crews are making tremendous progress. Upon completion, the 100,000+ square-foot facility will be the first dedicated onsite training facility in our organization's 107-year history. It will elevate our preparedness and enhance our public safety services to the Broward County community. Follow our progress on our Facebook and Instagram, @ browardsheriffsoffice.

As we head into the holiday season, you will continue to see BSO out safeguarding your neighborhoods and getting to know our residents. Stop by and say hello!

On behalf of BSO's men and women, have a happy and safe holiday season! We'll see you in the new year.
